DEVILS/MIGHTEE/GAMA/DINGO: the impact of SFR time-scales on the SFR-radio luminosity correlation

ABSTRACT The tight relationship between infrared luminosity (LTIR) and 1.4 GHz radio continuum luminosity ($L_\mathrm{1.4\, GHz}$) has proven useful for understanding star formation free from dust obscuration. Infrared emission in star-forming galaxies typically arises from recently formed, dust-enshrouded stars, whereas radio synchrotron emission is expected from subsequent supernovae. By leveraging the wealth of ancillary far-ultraviolet – far-infrared photometry from the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey and Galaxy and Mass Assembly surveys, combined with 1.4 GHz observations from the Meer Karoo Array Telescope International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration survey and Deep Investigation of Neutral Gas Origin projects, we investigate the impact of time-scale differences between far-ultraviolet – far-infrared and radio-derived star formation rate (SFR) tracers. We examine how the spectral energy distribution (SED)-derived star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies can be used to explain discrepancies in these SFR tracers, which are sensitive to different time-scales. Galaxies exhibiting an increasing SFH have systematically higher LTIR and SED-derived SFRs than predicted from their 1.4 GHz radio luminosity. This indicates that insufficient time has passed for subsequent supernovae-driven radio emission to accumulate. We show that backtracking the SFR(t) of galaxies along their SED-derived SFHs to a time several hundred megayears prior to their observed epoch will both linearize the SFR–$L_\mathrm{1.4\, GHz}$ relation and reduce the overall scatter. The minimum scatter in the SFR(t)–$L_\mathrm{1.4\, GHz}$ is reached at 200 – 300 Myr prior, consistent with theoretical predictions for the time-scales required to disperse the cosmic ray electrons responsible for the synchrotron emission.

The recent star formation histories of nearby galaxies on resolved scales

Abstract Star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies are affected by a variety of factors, both external (field vs. cluster/group) and internal (presence of a bar and AGN, morphological type). In this work, we extend our previous study and apply the $\langle SFR_{\rm {5}} \rangle \big / \langle SFR_{\rm {200}} \rangle$ metric to a sample of eleven nearby galaxies with MUSE observations. Based on a combination of Hα and UV photometry, $\langle SFR_{\rm {5}} \rangle \big / \langle SFR_{\rm {200}} \rangle$ is sensitive to star formation timescales of ∼5–200 Myr and therefore measures the present-day rate of change in the star formation rate, dSFR/dt. Within this limited galaxy sample, we do not observe systematic variations between the global value of $\langle SFR_{\rm {5}} \rangle \big / \langle SFR_{\rm {200}} \rangle$ and the presence of an active galactic nucleus, stellar bar, nor with group or cluster membership. Within some of the individual galaxies, we however observe significant differences in $\langle SFR_{\rm {5}} \rangle \big / \langle SFR_{\rm {200}} \rangle$ between the arm and interarm regions. In half of the galaxies, the recent SFH of both arm and interarm regions has been very similar. However, in the galaxies with higher bulge-to-total light ratios and earlier morphological type, the SFR is declining more rapidly in the interarm regions. This decline in SFR is not a result of low molecular gas surface density or a decrease in the star formation efficiency, implying that other factors are responsible for this SFR decrease.

Probing the Stellar Populations and Star Formation History of Early-type Galaxies at 0 < z < 1.1 in the Rest-frame Ultraviolet

We measure the evolution of the rest-frame near-ultraviolet (NUV)−V colors for early-type galaxies in clusters at 0 < z < 1.1 using data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program, CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey, and local Sloan Digital Sky Survey clusters observed with Galaxy Evolution Explorer. Our results show that there is an excess in the ultraviolet spectrum in most quiescent galaxies (compared to the expectations from models fitting their optical/infrared colors and spectra) below z ∼ 0.6, beyond which the excess UV emission fades rapidly. This evolution of the UV color is only consistent with the presence of a highly evolved, hot horizontal branch subpopulation in these galaxies (among the majority of cool and optically bright stars), comprising on average 10% of the total stellar mass and forming at z > 3. The blue UV colors of early-type galaxies at low–intermediate redshifts are likely driven by this subpopulation being enriched in helium up to ∼44%. At z > 0.8 (when the extra UV component has not yet appeared) the data allow us to constrain the star formation histories of galaxies by fitting models to the evolution of their UV colors: we find that the epoch at which the stellar populations formed lies in the range 3 < z form < 10 (corresponding to 0.5–2.2 Gyr after the Big Bang) with a star formation e-folding timescale of τ = 0.35–0.7 Gyr, suggesting that these galaxies formed the majority of stars at very high redshift, with a brief yet intense burst of star formation activity. The star formation history and chemical evolution of early-type galaxies resemble those of globular clusters, albeit on much larger scales.

Exploring the dependence of chemical traits on metallicity. Chemical trends for red giant stars with asteroseismic ages

Given the massive spectroscopic surveys and the Gaia mission, the Milky Way has turned into a unique laboratory to be explored using abundance ratios that show a strong dependence on time. Within this framework, the data provided through asteroseismology serve as a valuable complement. Even so, it has been demonstrated that chemical traits cannot be used as universal relations across the Galaxy. To complete this picture, it is important to investigate the dependence on metallicity of the chemical ratios employed for inferring stellar ages. We aim to explore different combinations of neutron-capture, odd-Z, and alpha elements as a function of age, particularly focusing on their metallicity dependence for a sample of 74 giant field stars. Using UVES observations, we derived atmospheric parameters and high-precision line-by-line chemical abundances (&lt;0.04 dex) for the entire set of spectra, which covers a wide spread in ages (up to 14 Gyr) and metallicities ($-0.7&lt; Fe/H &lt; +0.1$). Stellar ages are inferred from astereoseismic information. By fitting chemical-age trends for three different metallicity groups, we estimated their dependence on metallicity. Simultaneously, we identified those exhibiting stronger correlations with time. We found that the stronger chemical-age relations ( Zr/alpha ) are not necessarily the ratios with the smaller dependence on metallicity ( Ce/alpha and Ce/Eu We confirm the n-capture/alpha -age trends for evolved stars, wherein the most significant correlation is evident in stars with solar metallicity, gradually diminishing in stars with lower iron content. The lack of homogeneity within the metallicity range highlights the intricate nature of our Galaxy's star formation history and yield production. The dependence on metallicity of the yields involving s-process elements and the influence of radial stellar migration pose challenges to relying solely on chemical abundances for dating stars. These findings contest the feasibility of establishing universally applicable chemical clocks that are valid across the entire Galaxy and across various metallicity ranges.

The Star Formation History in Local Group Galaxies. I. Ten Dwarf Galaxies

The star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies provide valuable insights into galaxy evolution and stellar physics. Understanding the SFHs enables the study of chemical enrichment of galaxies, star formation triggered by interactions, and the behavior of various stellar populations. This work investigates the SFHs of ten dwarf galaxies in the Local Group (LG), which spans a wide range of types, masses, luminosities, and metallicities. The analysis is based on our new sample of the member stars in the LG after removing foreground dwarf stars by using information from the near-infrared color–color diagram and Gaia astrometry. The sample includes the most complete and pure red supergiants and asymptotic giant branch stars to gain valuable insights into the recent SFHs of the galaxies. A fitting method based on the color–magnitude diagram (CMD) is introduced to measure the SFH. The Padova isochrones are used to generate initial model CMDs, accounting for photometric errors and completeness through star-field simulations to match the completeness and error distributions of the observed CMDs. Subsequently, the SFHs, distance modulus, and metallicity of the ten dwarf galaxies are determined by fitting the CMDs. The results indicate that the star formation rates of dwarf irregulars show a gradual increase, while those of dwarf ellipticals exhibit a gradual decrease from the past to the present. Furthermore, this work shows that the star formation activity in dwarf ellipticals persisted up to 30 Myr ago. A significant increasing feature in the SFH of NGC 6822 reveals star formation activity triggered by an interaction event.

Probing star formation rates and histories in AGNs and non-AGN galaxies across diverse cosmic environments and X-ray luminosity ranges

In this work, we compare the star formation rates (SFRs) and star formation histories (SFHs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and non-AGN galaxies. We explore these aspects across different density fields and over three orders of magnitude in X-ray luminosity (L$_X$). For that purpose, we employed X-ray AGNs detected in the XMM-XXL field and constructed a galaxy control sample, using sources from the VIPERS catalogue. We applied strict photometric and quality selection criteria to ensure that only sources with robust (host) galaxy measurements were included in the analysis. Our final samples consist of 149 X-ray AGNs with $ L_ X,2-10keV (ergs^ &lt;45$ and 3\,488 non-AGN systems. The sources span a redshift range of $ 0.5&lt;z&lt;1.0$ and have stellar masses within, $10.5&lt; M_*(M_ odot) &lt;11.5$. For these systems, we adopted the available measurements for their local densities and their spectral lines (D$_n$4000) from the VIPERS catalogue. To compare the SFRs of these two populations, we calculated the SFR$_ norm $ parameter. The latter is defined as the ratio of the SFRs of AGNs to the SFRs of non-AGN galaxies with similar M$_*$ and redshift. Our findings reveal that low- and moderate-L$_X$ AGNs ($ L_ X,2-10keV (ergs^ &lt;44$) that reside in low-density fields have a nearly flat SFR$_ norm -$L$_X$ relation. In contrast, the AGNs of similar L$_X$ values that reside in high-density environments present an increase in SFR$_ norm $ with L$_X$. These results are in line with previous studies. Notably, our results suggest that the most luminous of the AGNs ($ L_ X,2-10keV (ergs^ &gt;44$) exhibit an increased SFR in comparison to non-AGN galaxies. This trend appears to be independent of the density of the environment. Furthermore, for AGNs with similar L$_X$, those in high-density regions tend to have higher SFR$_ norm $ values compared to their counterparts in low-density areas. Comparisons of the D$_n$4000 spectral index, which serves as a proxy for the age of the stellar population, reveals that low- and moderate-L$_X$ AGNs reside in galaxies with comparable stellar populations with non-AGN systems, regardless of the density field they are situated in. However, the most luminous X-ray sources tend to reside in galaxies that have younger stellar populations, as compared to non-AGN galaxies, regardless of the galaxy's environment.

A Tale of Three Dwarfs: Cluster-based Star Formation Histories of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies

We present a new study of the cluster populations in the blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCD) ESO185-IG13, ESO338-IG04, and Haro11, based on new and archival high-resolution images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, and the first to probe the populations older than ≈100 Myr. BCDs are believed to experience intense bursts of star formation (including at the present day) after long periods of quiescence, but little is known about the timing, frequency, duration, and strength of these bursts or about their star formation histories in general. We find that the cluster population in each of the three galaxies studied here has its own unique distribution of colors and hence a unique cluster and star formation history. From an assumed correlation between the normalization of the cluster mass function and the star formation rate of the host galaxy, we construct cluster-based star formation histories over the past ≈few × Gyr and find that only Haro11 is currently experiencing a burst (≈factor of 10 increase in the rate of star formation for the last ≈20 Myr), whereas ESO185 experienced enhanced star formation (by a factor ≈4) between 10 and 40 Myr ago, and ESO338 has had a fairly constant SFH over the past few Gyr. These findings indicate that not all BCDs are experiencing a burst of star formation at the present day, and that some have been forming stars and clusters at a fairly steady rate (within a factor of ≈2–3) over the past few Gyr. This scenario is similar to the histories of dwarf irregular and dwarf starburst galaxies, which have star formation rates that are 10–1000 times lower than those in BCDs.

Identification of a transition from stochastic to secular star formation around $z=9$ with JWST.

Star formation histories (SFHs) of early galaxies (6$&lt;z&lt;$12) have been found to be highly stochastic in both simulations and observations, while at $z the presence of a main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies implies secular processes at play. In this work we characterise the SFH variability of early galaxies as a function of their stellar mass and redshift. We used the JADES public catalogue and derived the physical properties of the galaxies as well as their SFHs using the spectral energy distribution modelling code cigale . To this end, we implemented a non-parametric SFH with a flat prior allowing for as much stochasticity as possible. We used the star formation rate (SFR) gradient, an indicator of the movement of galaxies on the SFR-$M_ plane, linked to the recent SFH of galaxies. This dynamical approach of the relation between the SFR and stellar mass allows us to show that, at $z&gt;9$, 87&lt;!PCT!&gt; of massive galaxies ($ have SFR gradients consistent with a stochastic star formation activity during the last 100\,Myr, while this fraction drops to 15&lt;!PCT!&gt; at $z&lt;7$. On the other hand, we see an increasing fraction of galaxies with a star formation activity following a common stream on the SFR-$M_ plane with cosmic time, indicating that a secular mode of star formation is emerging. We place our results in the context of the observed excess of UV emission as probed by the UV luminosity function at $z by estimating $ UV $, the dispersion of the UV absolute magnitude distribution, to be of the order of 1.2\,mag, and compare it with predictions from the literature. In conclusion, we find a transition of star formation mode happening around $z Galaxies with stochastic SFHs dominate at $z although this level of stochasticity is too low to reach those invoked by recent models to reproduce the observed UV luminosity function.

Galactic archaeology with [Mg/Mn] versus [Al/Fe] abundance ratios

Context. The diagram depicting the abundance ratios [Mg/Mn] versus [Al/Fe] has gained significant attention in recent literature as a valuable tool for exploring fundamental aspects of the evolution of the Milky Way (MW) and the nearby dwarf galaxies. In particular, this combination of elements is supposed to be highly sensitive to the history of star formation, unveiled by the imprints left on those abundances. Unfortunately, a complete discussion on the uncertainties associated with these nuclei is still missing, making it difficult to know how reliable the associated results are. Aims. In this work, we aim to analyse, by means of detailed chemical evolution models, the uncertainties related to the nucleosynthesis of Mg, Al, Mn, and Fe to show how different yield prescriptions can substantially affect the trends in the [Mg/Mn] versus [Al/Fe] plane. In fact, if different nucleosynthesis assumptions produce conflicting results, then the [Mg/Mn] versus [Al/Fe] diagram does not represent a strong diagnostic for the star formation history (SFH) of a galaxy. Methods. We discuss the results on the [Mg/Mn] versus [Al/Fe] diagram, as predicted by several MW and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) chemical evolution models adopting different nucleosynthesis prescriptions. Results. The results show that the literature nucleosynthesis prescriptions require some corrective factors to reproduce the APOGEE DR17 abundances of Mg, Al, and Mn in the MW and that the same factors can also improve the results for the LMC. In particular, we show that by modifying the massive star yields of Mg and Al, the behaviour of the [Mg/Mn] versus [Al/Fe] plot changes substantially. Conclusions. In conclusion, by changing the chemical yields within their error bars, one obtains trends that differ significantly, making it very difficult to draw any reliable conclusion on the SFH of galaxies. The proposed diagram is therefore very uncertain from a theoretical point of view, and it could represent a good diagnostic for star formation, only if the uncertainties on the nucleosynthesis of the above-mentioned elements (Mg, Mn, Al, and Fe) could be reduced by future stellar calculations.

To be, or not to be: Balmer breaks in high-z galaxies with JWST

ABSTRACT Standard models of structure formation allow us to predict the cosmic timescales relevant for the onset of star formation and the assembly history of galaxies at high redshifts (z &amp;gt; 10). The strength of the Balmer break represents a well-known diagnostic of the age and star formation history of galaxies, which enables us to compare observations with contemporary simulations – thus shedding light on the predictive power of our current models of star formation in the early Universe. Here, we measure the Balmer break strength for 23 spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at redshifts 6 ≲ z ≲ 12 using public JWST NIRSpec data from the cycle 1 GO 1433 and GO 2282 programmes (PI Coe), as well as public spectroscopic data from the JWST Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). We find that the range of observed Balmer break strengths agree well with that of current simulations given our measurement uncertainties. No cases of anomalously strong Balmer breaks are detected, and therefore no severe departures from the predictions of contemporary models of star formation. However, there are indications of a number of outliers in the observed distribution which have weaker Balmer breaks than predicted by simulations.

Stochastic Modeling of Star Formation Histories. III. Constraints from Physically Motivated Gaussian Processes

Galaxy formation and evolution involve a variety of effectively stochastic processes that operate over different timescales. The extended regulator model provides an analytic framework for the resulting variability (or “burstiness”) in galaxy-wide star formation due to these processes. It does this by relating the variability in Fourier space to the effective timescales of stochastic gas inflow, equilibrium, and dynamical processes influencing giant molecular clouds' creation and destruction using the power spectral density (PSD) formalism. We use the connection between the PSD and autocovariance function for general stochastic processes to reformulate this model as an autocovariance function, which we use to model variability in galaxy star formation histories (SFHs) using physically motivated Gaussian processes in log star formation rate (SFR) space. Using stellar population synthesis models, we then explore how changes in model stochasticity can affect spectral signatures across galaxy populations with properties similar to the Milky Way and present-day dwarfs, as well as at higher redshifts. We find that, even at fixed scatter, perturbations to the stochasticity model (changing timescales vs. overall variability) leave unique spectral signatures across both idealized and more realistic galaxy populations. Distributions of spectral features including Hα and UV-based SFR indicators, Hδ and Ca H and K absorption-line strengths, D n (4000), and broadband colors provide testable predictions for galaxy populations from present and upcoming surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The Gaussian process SFH framework provides a fast, flexible implementation of physical covariance models for the next generation of spectral energy distribution modeling tools. A Census of Star Formation Histories of Massive Galaxies at 0.6 < z < 1 from Spectrophotometric Modeling Using Bagpipes and Prospector

We present individual star formation histories (SFHs) of ∼3000 massive galaxies (log(M */M ⊙) > 10.5) from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census spectroscopic survey at a lookback time of ∼7 billion yr and quantify the population trends leveraging 20 hr deep-integrated spectra of these ∼1800 star-forming and ∼1200 quiescent galaxies at 0.6 < z < 1.0. Essentially all galaxies at this epoch contain stars of age <3 Gyr, in contrast with older massive galaxies today, facilitating better recovery of previous generations of star formation at cosmic noon and earlier. We conduct spectrophotometric analysis using parametric and nonparametric Bayesian stellar population synthesis modeling tools—Bagpipes and Prospector—to constrain the median SFHs of this mass complete sample and characterize population trends. A consistent picture arises for the late-time stellar mass growth when quantified as t 50 and t 90, corresponding to the age of the Universe when galaxies formed 50% and 90% of their total stellar mass, although the two methods disagree at the earliest formation times (e.g., t 10). Our results reveal trends in both stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersion as in the local Universe—low-mass galaxies with shallower potential wells grow their stellar masses later in cosmic history compared to high-mass galaxies. Unlike local quiescent galaxies, the median duration of late-time star formation (τ SF,late = t 90–t 50) does not consistently depend on the stellar mass. This census sets a benchmark for future deep spectrophotometric studies of the more distant Universe.

The SAMI-Fornax Dwarfs Survey – IV. Star formation histories of dwarf and early-type galaxies: insights from full spectral fitting

ABSTRACT We present a study on the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies covering the range 104 &amp;lt; M⋆/M⊙ &amp;lt; 1012, leveraging full spectral fitting algorithms. Our sample consists of 31 dwarf galaxies from the SAMI-Fornax Survey with stellar masses between 107–$10^{9.5} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$, early-type galaxies from the ATLAS3D project with stellar masses between 1010–$10^{12} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$, and dwarf galaxies that are satellites of Andromeda and the Milky Way, with 104 &amp;lt; M⋆/M⊙ &amp;lt; 108. We find that galaxies from 107–$10^{8} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$ exhibit the smallest star formation rates (SFRs), while the SFR increase as we move down or up in mass. In this sense, we find that some $10^{5} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$ galaxies have cumulative SFHs that are comparable to those of $10^{12} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$ galaxies. Our study shows that the evolution of giant galaxies is primarily governed by their internal properties, with time-scales that do not depend on their environmental location. In contrast, dwarf galaxies below $10^{8} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$ can be significantly affected in dense environments, such as the inner regions of a cluster, that severely quench the galaxies before the assembly of their 50 per cent present-day mass. We find that, only dwarfs with stellar masses between 107–$10^{9} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$ actively form stars nowadays, while less massive galaxies seem to remain unaffected by the environment due to the expulsion of most of their gas at an early stage in their evolution. Our study highlights and corroborates a critical threshold around $10^{8}-10^{9} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$ in galaxy evolution from previous studies, separating more massive galaxies minimally impacted by the environment from those less massive galaxies quenched by it.

The Impact of Patchy Reionization on Ultrafaint Dwarf Galaxies

We investigate how patchy reionization affects the star formation history (SFH) and stellar metallicity of ultrafaint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). Patchy reionization refers to varying ultraviolet background strengths depending on a galaxy’s environment. Recent observations highlight the significance of this effect on UFDs, as UFDs can have different SFHs depending on their relative position with respect to their host halo during the period of reionization. However, most cosmological hydrodynamic simulations do not consider environmental factors such as patchy reionization, and the effect of reionization is typically applied homogeneously. Using a novel approach to implement patchy reionization, we show how SFHs of simulated UFDs can change. Our cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations focus on UFD analogs with M vir ∼ 109 M ⊙, M * ≲ 105 M ⊙ at z = 0. We find that patchy reionization can weaken the effect of reionization by 2 orders of magnitude up to z = 3, enabling late star formation in half of the simulated UFDs, with quenching times ∼460 Myr later than those with homogeneous reionization. We also show that halo merger and mass assembly can affect the SFHs of simulated UFDs, in addition to patchy reionization. The average stellar iron-to-hydrogen ratio, [Fe/H], of the simulated UFDs with patchy reionization increases by 0.22–0.42 dex. Finally, our findings suggest that patchy reionization could be responsible for the extended SFHs of Magellanic UFDs compared to non-Magellanic UFDs.

The star formation histories of galaxies in different stages of pre-processing in the Fornax A group

ABSTRACT We study the recent star formation histories of 10 galaxies in the Fornax A galaxy group, on the outskirts of the Fornax cluster. The group galaxies are gas-rich, and their neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) was studied in detail with observations from the MeerKAT telescope. This allowed them to be classified into different stages of pre-processing (early, ongoing, advanced). We use long-slit spectra obtained with the South African Large Telescope (SALT) to analyse stellar population indicators to constrain quenching time-scales and to compare these to the H i gas content of the galaxies. The H α equivalent width, EW(H α), suggest that the pre-processing stage is closely related to the recent (&amp;lt;10 Myr) specific Star Formation Rate (sSFR). The early-stage galaxy (NGC 1326B) is not yet quenched in its outer parts, while the ongoing-stage galaxies mostly have a distributed population of very young stars, though less so in their outer parts. The galaxies in the advanced stage of pre-processing show very low recent sSFR in the outer parts. Our results suggest that NGC 1326B, FCC 35, and FCC 46 underwent significantly different histories from secular evolution during the last Gyr. The fact that most galaxies are on the secular evolution sequence implies that pre-processing has a negligible effect on these galaxies compared to secular evolution. We find EW(H α) to be a useful tool for classifying the stage of pre-processing in group galaxies. The recent sSFR and H i morphology show that galaxies in the Fornax A vicinity are pre-processing from the outside in.

Low-mass bursty galaxies in JADES efficiently produce ionizing photons and could represent the main drivers of reionization

ABSTRACT We use deep imaging from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) to study the evolution of the ionizing photon production efficiency, ξion. We estimate ξion for a sample of 677 galaxies at z ∼ 4–9 using NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) photometry. Specifically, combinations of the medium and wide bands F335M–F356W and F410M–F444W to constrain emission lines that trace ξion: Hα and [O iii]. Additionally, we use the spectral energy distribution fitting code prospector to fit all available photometry and infer galaxy properties. The flux measurements obtained via photometry are consistent with FRESCO (First Reionisation Epoch Spectroscopic Complete Survey) and NIRSpec-derived fluxes. Moreover, the emission-line-inferred measurements are consistent with the prospector estimates. We also confirm the observed ξion trend with redshift and MUV, and find: log ξion(z, MUV) = (0.05 ± 0.02)z + (0.11 ± 0.02)MUV + (27.33 ± 0.37). We use prospector to investigate correlations of ξion with other galaxy properties. We see a clear correlation between ξion and burstiness in the star formation history of galaxies, given by the ratio of recent to older star formation, where burstiness is more prevalent at lower stellar masses. We also convolve our ξion relations with luminosity functions from the literature, and constant escape fractions of 10 per cent and 20 per cent, to place constraints on the cosmic ionizing photon budget. By combining our results, we find that if our sample is representative of the faint low-mass galaxy population, galaxies with bursty star formation are efficient enough in producing ionizing photons and could be responsible for the reionization of the Universe.

Siena Galaxy Atlas 2020

We present the 2020 version of the Siena Galaxy Atlas (SGA-2020), a multiwavelength optical and infrared imaging atlas of 383,620 nearby galaxies. The SGA-2020 uses optical grz imaging over ≈20,000 deg2 from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Imaging Surveys Data Release 9 and infrared imaging in four bands (spanning 3.4–22 μm) from the 6 year unWISE coadds; it is more than 95% complete for galaxies larger than R(26) ≈ 25″ and r < 18 measured at the 26 mag arcsec−2 isophote in the r band. The atlas delivers precise coordinates, multiwavelength mosaics, azimuthally averaged optical surface-brightness profiles, model images and photometry, and additional ancillary metadata for the full sample. Coupled with existing and forthcoming optical spectroscopy from the DESI, the SGA-2020 will facilitate new detailed studies of the star formation and mass assembly histories of nearby galaxies; enable precise measurements of the local velocity field via the Tully–Fisher and fundamental plane relations; serve as a reference sample of lasting legacy value for time-domain and multimessenger astronomical events; and more.

The star formation histories of quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxies and their dependence on environment and globular cluster richness

ABSTRACT We derive the stellar population parameters of 11 quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) from Keck/KCWI data. We supplement these with 14 literature UDGs, creating the largest spectroscopic sample of UDGs to date (25). We find a strong relationship between their α-enhancement and their star formation histories: UDGs that formed on very short time-scales have elevated [Mg/Fe] abundance ratios, whereas those forming over extended periods present lower values. Those forming earlier and faster are overall found in high-density environments, being mostly early infalls into the cluster. No other strong trends are found with infall times. We analyse the stellar mass–metallicity, age–metallicity, and [Mg/Fe]–metallicity relations of the UDGs, comparing them to other types of low mass galaxies. Overall, UDGs scatter around the established stellar mass–metallicity relations of classical dwarfs. We find that GC-rich UDGs have intermediate-to-old ages, but previously reported trends of galaxy metallicity and GC richness are not reproduced with this spectroscopic sample due to the existence of GC-rich UDGs with elevated metallicities. In addition, we also find that a small fraction of UDGs could be ‘failed-galaxies’, supported by their GC richness, high alpha-abundance, fast formation time-scales and that they follow the mass–metallicity relation of z ∼2 galaxies. Finally, we also compare our observations to simulated UDGs. We caution that there is not a single simulation that can produce the diverse UDG properties simultaneously, in particular the low metallicity failed galaxy like UDGs.

Binaries drive high Type Ia supernova rates in dwarf galaxies

ABSTRACT The scaling of the specific Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate with host galaxy stellar mass $\dot{\text{N}}_\text{Ia} / \text{M}_\star \sim \text{M}_\star ^{-0.3}$ as measured in ASAS-SN and DES strongly suggests that the number of SNe Ia produced by a stellar population depends inversely on its metallicity. We estimate the strength of the required metallicity dependence by combining the average star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies as a function of their stellar mass with the mass–metallicity relation (MZR) for galaxies and common parametrizations for the SN Ia delay-time distribution. The differences in SFHs can account for only ∼30 per cent of the increase in the specific SN Ia rate between stellar masses of M⋆ = 1010 and 107.2 M⊙. We find that an additional metallicity dependence of approximately ∼Z−0.5 is required to explain the observed scaling. This scaling matches the metallicity dependence of the close binary fraction observed in APOGEE, suggesting that the enhanced SN Ia rate in low-mass galaxies can be explained by a combination of their more extended SFHs and a higher binary fraction due to their lower metallicities. Due to the shape of the MZR, only galaxies below M⋆ ≈ 3 × 109 M⊙ are significantly affected by the metallicity-dependent SN Ia rates. The $\dot{\text{N}}_\text{Ia} / \text{M}_\star \sim \text{M}_\star ^{-0.3}$ scaling becomes shallower with increasing redshift, dropping by factor of ∼2 at 107.2 M⊙ between z = 0 and 1 with our ∼Z−0.5 scaling. With metallicity-independent rates, this decrease is a factor of ∼3. We discuss the implications of metallicity-dependent SN Ia rates for one-zone models of galactic chemical evolution.

Exploring the correlation between Hα-to-UV ratio and burstiness for typical star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2

ABSTRACT The $\rm {H}\alpha$-to-UV luminosity ratio ($L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$) is often used to probe bursty star formation histories (SFHs) of star-forming galaxies and it is important to validate it against other proxies for burstiness. To address this issue, we present a statistical analysis of the resolved distribution of star formation rate surface density (ΣSFR) as well as stellar age and their correlations with the globally measured $L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ for a sample of 310 star-forming galaxies in two redshift bins of 1.37 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 1.70 and 2.09 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 2.61 observed by the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. We use the multiwaveband CANDELS/3D-HST imaging of MOSDEF galaxies to construct ΣSFR and stellar age maps. We analyse the composite rest-frame far-ultraviolet spectra of a subsample of MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) targets obtained by the Keck Low Resolution Imager and Spectrometer (LRIS), which includes 124 star-forming galaxies (MOSDEF-LRIS) at redshifts 1.4 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 2.6, to examine the average stellar population properties, and the strength of age-sensitive far-ultraviolet spectral features in bins of $L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$. Our results show no significant evidence that individual galaxies with higher $L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ are undergoing a burst of star formation based on the resolved distribution of ΣSFR of individual star-forming galaxies. We segregate the sample into subsets with low and high $L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$. The high-$L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ subset exhibits, on average, an age of $\log [\rm {Age/yr}]$ = 8.0, compared to $\log [\rm {Age/yr}]$ = 8.4 for the low-$L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ galaxies, though the difference in age is significant at only the 2σ level. Furthermore, we find no variation in the strengths of Si iv λλ1393, 1402 and C iv λλ1548, 1550 P-Cygni features from massive stars between the two subsamples, suggesting that the high-$L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ galaxies are not preferentially undergoing a burst compared to galaxies with lower $L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$. On the other hand, we find that the high-$L(\text{H}\alpha)/L(\rm UV)$ galaxies exhibit, on average, more intense He ii λ1640 emission, which may possibly suggest the presence of a higher abundance of high-mass X-ray binaries.
