In vitro impacts of polystyrene microplastics and environmental pollutants on ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase and glutathione S-transferase activity in Mossambica tilapia

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a potential threat to marine organisms. In vitro toxicity of MPs and other pollutants, such as pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs), has been understudied. This study aimed to investigate the effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) with different particle sizes on two biomarkers: ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in tilapia liver homogenates. The study also examined the combined effects of PS-MPs with various environmental contaminants, including three metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+), three BFRs, and six PhACs. PS-MPs alone had no remarkable effects on the two biomarkers at the selected concentrations. However, PS-MPs combined with other pollutants significantly affected the two biomarkers in most situations. For EROD activity, PS + metal ions (except Zn2+ at 1000 μg/L), PS + BFRs (except decabromodiphenyl oxide (BDE-209)) or PS+ trimethoprim (TMP) significantly inhibited activity values, whereas PS+ 4-acetaminophen (AMP) induced EROD activity. For GST, PS together with most tested pollutants (except PS+ ibuprofen (IBF)) greatly decreased the activities. Accordingly, future research should focus on combined toxicity of mixtures to set more reasonable environmental safety evaluation standards.

Construction of the Index System for the Integration of Professional Education and Innovation Entrepreneurship Education in Applied Universities

In applied universities, innovation and entrepreneurship education (IEE) has entered a new era of comprehensive integration of professional education. However, as a novel educational activity, the evaluation of professional innovation integration still lacks reasonable appraisal standards. This article is based on the basic theory of the Kirkpatrick evaluation model, combined with the innovation and entrepreneurship practice of China's applied universities, this study initially constructs an index system for professional innovation integration in applied universities, estimates and ascertains the weights of different indicators using the Delphi and analytic hierarchy process approach, and thereafter, builds an index system for professional innovation integration in applied universities, which comprises of 4 primary indicators, namely: reaction layer, learning layer, behavior layer, and achievement layer, supported by 9 secondary indicators and 23 tertiary indicators.

International Legal Approaches to the Issue of Admissibility of the Use of Genomic Technologies in Medicine

The purpose of the paper is to determine the main international standards and positions of international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations regarding the use of genomic technologies in medicine, which are reflected in their documents. At the universal level, there is no international treaty containing uniform rules in this area, but there are many documents of international organizations (such as WHO, UNESCO) that set out the relevant standards. At the regional level, the experience of the Council of Europe in the field of legal regulation of genomic medicine plays a significant role. National approaches to the legal regulation of genomic medicine vary. In such conditions, the practice of international non-governmental organizations in the field of biomedicine and genetic technologies plays a significant role. They set standards and represent the positions of the biomedical community.Based on the analysis of international acts, it can be concluded that the general position of the international biomedical community is that genome editing technologies can be widely used for therapeutic and scientific purposes, provided that there is no criterion for transmitting genes to descendants. Genome editing should be carried out in accordance with international professional and ethical standards, including the principles of benefit over harm and informed consent. Discussions about the admissibility of hereditary genome editing continue. The prevailing approach of international organizations is that there are currently no reasonable standards for the safety and effectiveness of this technology, while research itself is encouraged.

Application of electron beam irradiation and mild thermal treatment of Bacillus cereus spores in Chinese braised beef cuisine

ABSTRACT The individual and combined effects of electron beam (EB) irradiation and thermal treatments were investigated on Chinese braised beef samples inoculated with Bacillus cereus spores. Log reductions of 1.19, 2.10, and 3.62 log CFU/g were recorded for B. cereus spores after 6, 9, and 12 kGy lone EB doses, respectively. An 85°C thermal treatment at 20 min (H) reduced the spores population by 1.03 log CFU/g. The combination of the thermal and EB irradiation treatments (HEB) of HEB-6 and HEB-9 achieved 1.69 and 2.89 log CFU/g reductions, respectively. The B. cereus spores population was depleted to below the detection limit following HEB-12 treatment. No significant pH change was observed in the treatments except for HEB-12. The hurdle treatment of HEB-12 caused marked changes in color, aroma, and overall acceptability. Although HEB irradiation improved microbial safety, careful selection of approved EB doses can effectively enhance food safety and maintain reasonable quality standards.

Impartiality, human rights advocacy, and teaching about politically sensitive issues: Squaring the circle

This article first describes and then proposes a practical solution to the professional dilemma between the duty of impartiality and the duty of human rights advocacy that many teachers experience when teaching and talking about politically sensitive issues with students. The article begins by presenting an analysis of the source and signification of the tension between impartiality and human rights advocacy based on evidence from research on teachers’ perspectives, the conceptual literature on teaching and learning about controversial issues, and the legal and ethical framework of education. Then, drawing on scholarship on respect for students’ right to freedom of religion, the article advances and defends set of basic pedagogical guidelines for teaching and talking about politically sensitive issues that permit teachers to maintain a professional stance of impartiality without abrogating their responsibility to act as human rights advocates. Key to squaring the circle between impartiality and human rights advocacy, the article argues, is for teachers to strive to remain descriptive in their treatment of politically sensitive issues and insist on high standards of reasoning and evidence while at the same time respecting students’ right to an opinion, no matter how mistaken that opinion may seem.

Rewriting Internal Relocation from a Refugee Perspective - The Lived Experience of Refugees in Afghanistan

ABSTRACT This article is part of a broader project aimed at rewriting refugee law jurisprudence from a lived refugee perspective. The co-authors, one of whom is a refugee from Afghanistan, have chosen internal relocation as the subject of this project as it is a problematic and controversial principle of international refugee law which we believe is frequently applied without due consideration of the practical experience of refugees. Internal relocation provides that a refugee may be returned to their country of origin if they can relocate to a “safe” part of that state where they would not have a well-founded fear of persecution. This principle is somewhat tempered by the application of a “reasonableness” test in most jurisdictions. That test aims to reflect that, in some cases, it may not be possible to require a refugee to relocate to another part of their country of origin to avoid persecution. However, a “reasonableness” factor is not always considered as part of relocation. Moreover, it aims to bring an “objective” standard of reasonableness, which can be critiqued on a number of bases. In this article, the authors rewrite an Australian Refugee Review Tribunal decision dealing with an applicant from Afghanistan to reflect the lived experience of refugees better and to encourage readers to think about whether some of the assumptions made in internal relocation jurisprudence have been fully interrogated. Much of internal relocation scholarship focuses on conceptual legal issues, for instance, whether relocation is grounded in the text, context or object of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and whether relocation fits within the “well-founded fear” or “state protection” limb of the refugee definition. While these are important conceptual debates about the treaty basis for internal relocation, we believe these have been well-analysed in the existing literature. Our article seeks to add to these core debates by reconceptualising the application of relocation to authentic refugee experiences and, through this, to highlight some of the weaknesses in the current approach to this complex question.

A systematic review with meta-analysis of heritability estimates for temperament-related traits in beef and dairy cattle populations.

Temperament (docility) is a key breeding goal in the cattle industry due to its direct relationship with animal welfare, cattle handler's safety and animal productivity. Over the past six decades, numerous studies have reported heritability estimates for temperament-related traits in cattle populations ranging from low to high values. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to perform a comprehensive systematic review with meta-analysis to obtain weighted estimates of heritability for temperament-related traits in worldwide cattle populations. After data editing and quality control, 106 studies were included in the systematic review, of which 29.2% and 70.8% reported estimates of heritability for temperament-related traits in dairy and beef cattle populations, respectively. Meta-analyses were performed for 95 heritability estimates using a random model approach. The weighted heritability estimates were as follow: (a) flight score at weaning = 0.23 (95% CI: 0.15-0.32); (b) flight speed at weaning = 0.30 (95% CI: 0.26-0.33); (c) joint analysis of flight speed and flight score at weaning = 0.27 (95% CI: 0.22-0.31); (d) flight speed at yearling = 0.26 (95% CI: 0.21-0.30); (e) joint analysis of flight speed at weaning and yearling = 0.27 (95% CI: 0.24-0.30); (f) movement score = 0.12 (95% CI: 0.08-0.15); (g) crush score at weaning = 0.21 (95% CI: 0.17-0.25); (h) pen score at weaning = 0.27 (95% CI: 0.19-0.34); (i) pen score at yearling = 0.20 (95% CI: 0.17-0.23); (j) joint analysis of pen score at weaning and yearling = 0.22 (95% CI: 0.18-0.26); (k) cow's aggressiveness at calving = 0.10 (95% CI: 0.01-0.19); (l) general temperament = 0.13 (95% CI: 0.06-0.19); (m) milking temperament = 0.16 (95% CI: 0.11-0.21); and (n) joint analysis of general and milking temperament = 0.14 (95% CI: 0.11-0.18). The heterogeneity index ranged from 0% to 77%, and the Q-test was significant (p < 0.05) for four single-trait meta-analyses. In conclusion, temperament is moderately heritable in beef cattle populations, and flight speed at weaning had the highest weighted heritability estimate. Moreover, between-study heterogeneity was low or moderate in beef cattle traits, suggesting reasonable standardization across studies. On the other hand, low-weighted heritability and high between-study heterogeneity were estimated for temperament-related traits in dairy cattle, suggesting that more studies are needed to better understand the genetic inheritance of temperament in dairy cattle populations.

With the development of our country's economy and the advancement of the urbanization process, the demand for land is increasing, and the phenomenon of land requisition to the countryside around the cities is becoming more and more common, affecting farmers' interests and the social security problem of landless farmers has become increasingly prominent. To deal with the land problem is the most important in the sustainable development of national economy, and the land expropriation compensation system is an important system to maintain the social stability of our country, and an important basis for rational allocation of land resources in our country. Therefore, it is particularly important to perfect the land expropriation compensation system in our country. Relevant government departments should determine reasonable compensation standards for land expropriation based on public interests, so as to reflect the rationality of land expropriation. At the same time, we should improve the compensation measures for land expropriation and requisition to ensure the maximization of farmers' interests.

How can child assistance policy supporting familisation be supported?

PurposeThis study examines the public’s perception of cash transfers for children in societies where children's welfare is often viewed as a private affair.Design/methodology/approachBased on 12 semi-structured interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) conducted in urban Jakarta, Indonesia, we explore mothers' perspectives on cash transfer programmes for children within low-income families during fieldwork in October 2023 and January 2024. In addition to the semi-structured interview, a FGD involving parents and other related stakeholders was conducted to increase data accuracy.FindingsOur findings reveal that cash transfers function as a “caregiving allowance” in Jakarta, allowing mothers to prioritize familial obligations while maintaining a reasonable standard of living. Contrary to the “de-familisation” focus observed in advanced welfare countries, these cash transfers for children reinforce traditional family labour division (familisation). Interestingly, despite reinforcing the familisation function, the initiative receives significant support. These results clearly highlight the influence of familisation-oriented welfare production, demonstrating a focus on enhancing family resilience in the design of child-related policies in Indonesia. Overall, these results make clear the visibility of traditional division of labour influences on welfare production, revealing a focus on the familialisation effect in the design of child-related policies in Indonesia. These findings reinforce the suitability of the term “familistic welfare regime” as an appropriate descriptor for Jakarta in particular and Indonesia in general.Originality/valueThis study enriches our understanding of the evolution of child-related assistance in the Global South through a defamilisation lens, shedding light on the complex interplay between gender inequalities and social policy formulation in these regions. Furthermore, it offers valuable insights into the ongoing discourse on welfare regime studies in Indonesia, suggesting that mainstream narratives of productivist transition are only partially validated. The insights garnered from this research open avenues for future studies across diverse contexts.

Hume's Constitutivist Response to Scepticism

In the concluding section of the Book One of the Treatise, Hume confronts radical scepticism about the standards of correct reasoning. According to the naturalistic interpretations, Hume resolves this scepticism by appealing to some psychological facts. A common criticism of this interpretation is that the alleged naturalistic epistemic norm seems to be merely Hume’s report of his psychology, and it remains unclear why this seemingly mere psychological description can provide a principled reason to overcome his scepticism. In this paper, I will argue that Hume’s discussions of the “indirect passions” and social identity provide a constitutivist ground for the naturalistic epistemic standards in the “Conclusion”: being the object of the indirect passions constitutes what kind of person one is, and being the kind of person (philosopher in Hume’s case) gives non-optional reason to pursue certain kinds of reasoning.

Research on criminal asset sharing system in overseas recovery of stolen goods

It is not only necessary for China to establish the system of sharing criminal assets in the recovery of overseas assets, but also has sufficient theoretical basis and clear legal basis. From the perspective of extraterritorial rule of law, the modes of criminal asset sharing include fixed agreement mode and individual agreement mode. The confiscated criminal assets shall be returned to the victim or the legal owner first, and reasonable fees shall be deducted before the assets are shared; The proportion of sharing is mainly determined based on the contribution of the assisting country, and factors such as the nature of the crime and the damage suffered by the requesting country are comprehensively considered. The sharing of criminal assets has become a common practice for overseas recovery of stolen goods, showing obvious characteristics of international cooperation and incentive. Based on the practice of foreign-related rule of law, China can gradually fix the experience of asset sharing into bilateral agreements on the basis of successful cases of individual cooperation. According to the different nature of the case, different sharing strategies should be adopted to determine the reasonable standard of asset sharing. External liaison agencies and competent authorities that specify the sharing of assets; Establish a sound procedure mechanism for the proposal, review, decision and implementation of criminal asset sharing.

A Four-Arm Randomized Clinical Trial of Topical Pain Control for Sentinel Node Radiotracer Injections in Patients with Breast Cancer.

Radioactive tracer injections for breast cancer sentinel lymph node mapping can be painful. In this randomized trial, we compared four approaches to topical pain control for radiotracer injections. Breast cancer patients were randomized (9 April 2021-8 May 2022) to receive the institutional standard of ice prior to injection (n=44), or one of three treatments: ice plus a vibrating distraction device (Buzzy®; n=39), 4% lidocaine patch (n=44), or 4% lidocaine patch plus ice plus Buzzy® (n=40). Patients completed the Wong-Baker FACES® pain score (primary outcome) and a satisfaction with pain control received scale (secondary). Nuclear medicine technologists (n=8) rated perceived pain control and ease of administration for each patient. At study conclusion, technologists rank-ordered treatments. Data were analyzed as intention-to-treat. Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used to compare pain scores of control versus pooled treatment arms (primary) and then control to each treatment arm individually (secondary). There were no differences in pain scores between the control and treatment groups, both pooled and individually. Eighty-five percent of patients were 'satisfied/very satisfied' with treatment received, with no differences between groups. No differences in providers' perceptions of pain were observed, although providers perceived treatments involving Buzzy© more difficult to administer (p<0.001). Providers rated lidocaine patch as the easiest, with ice being second. In this randomized trial, no differences in patient-reported pain or satisfaction with treatment was observed between ice and other topical treatments. Providers found treatments using Buzzy® more difficult to administer. Given patient satisfaction and ease of administration, ice is a reasonable standard.

Access to Oncology Medicines in Canada: Consensus Forum for Recommendations for Improvement.

Patient access to new oncology drugs in Canada is only possible after navigating multiple sequential systemic checkpoints for national regulatory approval, health technology assessment (HTA) and collective government price negotiation. These steps delay access and prevent health care providers from being able to prescribe optimal therapy. Eighteen Canadian oncology clinicians from the medicine, nursing and pharmacy professions met to develop consensus recommendations for defining reasonable government performance standards around process and timeliness to improve Canadian cancer patients' access to best care. A modified Delphi methodology was used to identify consensus on 30 questions involving five themes: accountability, disparities, endpoints, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness. It was agreed that greater transparency is required across regulatory and HTA processes. Health professionals in oncology are frustrated for their patients because they are unable to deliver the modern guideline-supported therapies they want to provide due to delays in approval or funding. Canadian health care providers request improvements in timely access to life-saving therapeutics in line with other comparator countries. Clinicians expect urgent improvements in Canadian health systems to give our patients their best chance of survival.

A Closed-Form Solution to the Mechanism of Interface Crack Formation with One Contact Area in Decagonal Quasicrystal Bi-Materials

Cracks and crack-like defects in engineering structures have greatly reduced the structural strength. An interface crack with one contact area in a combined tension–shear field of decagonal quasicrystal bi-material is investigated. Based on the deformation compatibility equation and displacement potential function, the complex representation of stress and displacement is given. Using the mixed boundary conditions, the closed-form expressions for the stresses and the displacement jumps in the phonon field and phason field on the material interface are obtained. The results show that the stress intensity factor at the crack tip is zero for the phason field. The variation in the stress intensity factor and the length of the contact zone in the phonon field is given, and the result is consistent with the properties of the crystal. The design of safe engineering structures and the formulation of reasonable quality acceptance standards may benefit from the theoretical research carried out here.

Circular Definitions of ‘Good’ and the Good of Circular Definitions

AbstractI defend the view that circular definitions can be useful and illuminating by focusing on the fitting-attitudes analysis of value. This definition states that an item has value if and only if it is a fitting target of attitudes. Good items are the fitting targets of positive attitudes, and bad items are the fitting targets of negative ones. I shall argue that a circular version of this definition, defended by Rabinowicz and Rønnow-Rasmussen (2006), is preferable to its non-circular counterpart and upholds reasonable standards of acceptability. The standards I will be discussing come from Humberstone (1997), who claims that definitions cannot be informative as long as they are inferentially circular.

A Comprehensive Analysis of China’s Water Resources Tax Reform

In response to the growing disparity between the supply and demand of water resources, the Chinese government has piloted a more binding and reformed water resources tax to realize the sustainable utilization of water resources. However, reasonable tax standards and their water-saving effects and economic benefits are important and worthy of attention. Therefore, in this study, we combine the virtual water theory with the price input–output model to discuss the impact of water resources taxation on the economy and its water-saving effects. The results show the following: (1) A water resources tax has a significant water-saving effect, and is predicted to save 33.12 billion cubic meters of virtual water. (2) Consumers’ expected reductions in spending on food and tobacco manufacturing and agriculture are predicted to save more virtual water at a lower economic cost. (3) The collection of water resources taxes can actively and simultaneously guide water savings in terms of consumption and production. The water consumption of the construction industry is worthy of attention. The expected output value reduction accounts for 67.2% of the total output value reduction, and its water savings account for 96% of the total water savings. Other service sectors also have ample room to optimize the utilization of their water resources.
