31 Effects of dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) levels and dietary SID tryptophan to Lys ratios on growth performance and behavior of late-nursery to finish maternal barrows

Abstract The objective was to determine the effects of dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) levels and SID tryptophan (Trp) to Lys ratios on growth performance and behavior of late-nursery to finish maternal barrows. A total of 2,293 barrows (PIC Camborough, initially 11.9 ± 0.35 kg) were used in this trial with 96 mixed-sex pens and 23 to 25 pigs/pen. There was a total of 6 dietary phases: P1:11.9-29.5 kg; P2:29.5-49.6 kg; P3:49.6-62.6 kg; P4:62.6-80.3 kg; P5:80.3-103.3 kg; and P6:103.3-137.8 kg. Pens were blocked by body weight and randomly allotted to 1 of 6 treatments:T1: 100% Lys (dietary SID Lys levels meet PIC SID Lys recommendation) and 21.0% of SID Trp:Lys ratio; T2: 100% Lys and 18.5% of SID Trp:Lys ratio; T3: 100% Lys and 16.0% of SID Trp:Lys ratio; T4: 80% Lys (dietary SID Lys levels meet 80% of PIC SID Lys recommendation) and 21.0% of SID Trp:Lys ratio; T5: 80% Lys and 18.5% of SID Trp:Lys ratio; and T6: 80% Lys and 16.0% of SID Trp:Lys ratio for P1-P2 and then 100% Lys and 18.5% of SID Trp:Lys ratio for P3-P6. Ear lesion (EL) was monitored during P2-P5. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed model in R Studio (Version 3.5.2, R Core Team; Vienna, Austria). Pigs fed T1 and T2 showed improved average daily gain than T6 (P < 0.05), with other treatments intermediate (Table 1). Pigs fed T2 showed improved average daily feed intake as compared with T6 (P < 0.05), with other treatments intermediate. There was no evidence for significant difference on feed-to-gain ratio or mortality. Removal was significantly greater for pigs fed T6 compared with all other treatments (P < 0.05). Pigs fed T2 had significantly greater hot carcass weight than T4, with other treatments intermediate. There was no evidence for significant differences on carcass yield or lean percentage. Pig fed T6 had significantly greater incidence of EL in P2 than all other treatments (P < 0.05). Pigs fed T4 and T6 had greater incidence of EL in P3 than T1 (P < 0.05), with other treatments intermediate. Pigs fed T5 and T6 had significantly greater incidence of EL in P4 than T1, T2, and T3 (P < 0.05), with T4 intermediate. During P5, pigs fed T4 and T5 had the greatest incidence of EL (P < 0.05), while pigs fed T6 had significant greater incidence of EL than T3 (P < 0.05), with T1 and T2 intermediate. In conclusion, dietary SID Lys and SID Trp:Lys ratio less than PIC recommendation during late-nursery-to-grower phase resulted in compromised overall growth performance of maternal barrows, even with restored dietary SID Lys and SID Trp:Lys levels in finish phase. Dietary SID Lys level and/or SID Trp:Lys ratios lower than PIC recommendation may result in greater incidence of aggression behavior in maternal barrows.

25 Effects of dietary standardized ileal digestible lysine on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and economics of pigs from 100 to 130 kg

Abstract A total of 1,570 finishing pigs (337 × 1050, PIC; initially 103.4 ± 0.85 kg) were used in a 28-d trial to determine the effects of feeding increasing standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys to pigs between 100 to 130 kg on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and economics. Before the beginning of the study, the 3 heaviest pigs per pen were removed and marketed with all remaining pigs marketed 28-d later at the end of the study. Pigs were housed in mixed sex pens, with 20 pigs per pen and 20 pens per treatment. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with four dietary treatments: 0.63, 0.68, 0.75, and 0.82% SID Lys. Diets were corn-soybean meal-based and fed in meal form. Dietary treatments were similar in NE and increasing SID Lys was achieved by increasing soybean meal and feed grade amino acids. For the first 14 d from 100 to approximately 118 kg, there was a linear tendency for increased (P = 0.074) average daily gain (ADG), a linear improvement (P < 0.05) in gain to feed ratio (G:F), and increase (P < 0.001) in SID lysine intake per kg of gain as SID Lys increased (Table). For the second 14 d from 118 to 128 kg, SID Lys intake per kg of gain increased (P < 0.001) as SID Lys increased, however; there was no evidence for difference (P > 0.10) for any growth performance traits. Overall, there was a linear increase (P = 0.018) in G:F and increase (P < 0.001) in SID lysine intake per kg of gain as SID Lys increased. Increasing SID Lys also linearly increased (P < 0.05) percentage lean and decreased (P < 0.05) backfat depth with no evidence for differences (P > 0.10) in other carcass criteria. For economics, feed cost and feed cost per kg of gain linearly increased (P < 0.05) as SID Lys increased in both low and high-price scenarios. Income over feed cost linearly decreased (P < 0.05) as dietary SID Lys increased in a low-price scenario, but there was no difference between treatments in a high-price scenario (P > 0.10). In conclusion, increasing dietary SID lysine in the last 28-d of the finisher period linearly increased G:F and SID Lys intake per kg of gain without significantly influencing other growth performance traits. Feed cost per kg of gain was linearly increased for both low and high-price scenarios with a detriment for IOFC with increasing SID Lys in the low-price scenario.

14 Effects of increasing daily dietary standardized ileal digestible lysine intake of gilts and sows during d 35 to 112 of gestation on reproductive performance

Abstract Our objective was to determine the effects of increasing daily dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) intake during d 35 to 112 of gestation on sow and litter performance. A total of 704 gilts and sows (PIC Camborough) were used. Females were group-housed after d 35 of gestation and individually fed with electronic sow feeders (ESF). At d 35 of gestation, females were balanced for body weight (BW) and caliper scores within parity categories, and randomly allotted to 1 of 4 treatments. Treatments consisted of increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake (11.1, 13.5, 16.1, and 18.5 g/d). Both gilts and sows received 2.37 kg/d of a gestation diet containing 3.17 Mcal of ME/kg, which was estimated to avoid feeding females below their maintenance requirements throughout the entire gestation. Treatments were achieved by different blend of low (0.47% SID Lys) and high (0.78% SID Lys) Lys diets via ESF based on the set feed allowance for females. Sow was the experimental unit and data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with the lmer and glmerfunctions of R, considering treatment, parity, and their interaction as fixed effects. There was no evidence (P > 0.10) of treatment and parity interaction for any response criteria. Body weight at d 112 of gestation and BW change from d 35 to 112 of gestation increased (linear; P < 0.05) with increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake (Table 1). No evidence for SID Lys treatment differences were observed for BW at weaning or BW change during lactation (P > 0.10). There was no evidence (P > 0.10) for treatment differences on caliper score (CS) at d 35 of gestation, d 112 of gestation, at weaning, or CS changes during gestation and lactation. There was no evidence for treatment difference on total born, percentage stillbirth and percentage of mummified fetuses (P > 0.10). However, there was a marginal reduction in percentage born alive piglets (quadratic, P = 0.056), with the least proportion of piglets born alive observed in females receiving 16.1g of daily SID Lys intake from d35 to d112 of gestation. Increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake during d 35 to 112 of gestation did not affect piglet birth weight, piglet average daily gain during lactation, proportion of removed pigs, and proportion of dead pigs during lactation. In summary, increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake during d35-to-112 of gestation increased female BW; however, no evidence of benefits was observed for female reproductive performance and litter performance during lactation.

157 Effects of increasing dietary protein concentration on digestibility of amino acids by growing pigs

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) by growing pigs is not influenced by dietary protein concentration if all AA are supplied by soybean protein isolate (SPI) or casein. In Exp. 1, cannulated pigs [n = 12; average body weight (BW) = 39.22 kg; SD = 3.96] were allotted to a replicated 6 × 3 Youden square design with the 6 diets and 3 periods. Five diets were formulated to contain 7 to 35% SPI. An N-free diet was also used. In Exp. 2, cannulated pigs (n = 24 average BW = 23.12 kg; SD = 2.89) were allotted a quadruplicated 6 × 2 Youden square design with the 6 diets and 2 periods. Five diets were formulated to contain 6.75 to 33.75% casein. An N-free diet was also used. Ileal digesta were collected and analyzed for dry matter (DM), Cr, and AA. The statistical models included diet as a fixed variable and square, animal, and period as random effects. Polynomial contrasts were used to test linear and quadratic effects of increasing dietary protein. Results from Exp. 1 indicated that the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of DM linearly (P = 0.001) decreased and the AID of all AA quadratically (P < 0.05) increased as the inclusion of SPI increased in the diets (Table 1). The SID of His and Trp was not affected by the inclusion of SPI in the diets. However, the SID of Arg, Leu, Lys, Phe, Thr, and Val linearly (P < 0.05) decreased, and the SID of Ile and Met tended to linearly (P < 0.10) decrease as the inclusion of SPI in the diets increased. Results from Exp. 2 indicated that the AID of DM tended to linearly decrease (P = 0.089) as the inclusion of casein increased in the diets (Table 2). The AID of most AA increased quadratically (P < 0.01) and the AID of Trp tended to increase (quadratic, P = 0.068) with increasing inclusion rate of casein. The SID of most AA was independent of casein levels. In conclusion, the anti-nutritional factors may have been increased in the diets as the inclusion of SPI increased and thus resulted in reduced SID values. However, the SID values were not influenced by increasing dietary protein if all AA were supplied by casein that does not contain anti-nutritional factors. Therefore, it is concluded that pigs have the capacity to absorb peptides and AA with the same efficiency if the protein concentration is 30% as if it is 6%. Dietary protein concentration itself, therefore, is not likely to limit AA absorption. However, even small amounts of anti-nutritional factors appear to negatively impact the SID of AA.

PSII-17 Effect of protease supplementation on amino acids digestibility of soybean meal fed to growing pigs of different ages

Abstract Protease supplementation can increase amino acids (AA) availability; however, the effectiveness of protease in swine diets varies and has been associated with the type and dose of protease, dietary ingredients, and potentially animal age. This study investigated the interactive effect of protease inclusion level and pig age on standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of protein (CP) and AA of soybean meal (SBM) fed to growing pigs. A corn starch–based diet was formulated with SBM as the sole source of AA and containing titanium as an indigestible marker. Protease was supplemented at 0, 15,000; 30,000 and 45,000 NFP/kg of feed (ProAct 360). An N-free diet was used to estimate basal ileal endogenous AA losses. Ten cannulated pigs (body weight = 21 kg ± 2 kg) were assigned to experimental diets in a duplicate 5 × 5 Latin square design. In Phase I (23 to 30 kg-pigs, 90 ± 17 d of age), ileal digesta was collected in 5 periods of 7 d (5 d adaptation and 2 d ileal digesta collection). In Phase II (50 to 65 kg-pigs. 140 ± 17 d of age), using the same diets, ileal digesta was collected in 5 more periods of 7 d. Pigs were fed at 4% of body weight (BW) adjusted at the end of each period. Diets and ileal digesta were analyzed for CP, AA, and titanium and SID was calculated. Orthogonal polynomial contrasts were used to determine the linear and quadratic effects of protease supplementation. The combined data were analyzed as 4 x 2 factorial, including the fixed effects of protease inclusion (excluding N-free diet), age, and their interactions. In phase I, increasing levels of protease resulted in linear improved (P < 0.1) of SID for the majority of indispensable AA (Except Arg, His, Met + Cys, and Trp) and the average of dispensable AA. In phase II, the SID of Ile, Leu, Met, Met + Cys, Val, the average of indispensable AA, and the majority of dispensable AA was quadratically improved. Overall (Phase I and II), the SID of Ile, Leu, Met + Cys, Val, Cys, Glu, Tyr, and the average of dispensable AA was quadratically improved (P < 0.1). In most cases, the supplementation of 30,000 NFP/kg of feed resulted in the greatest AA digestibility improvements. However, the linear response in the first phase for some AA suggests that diets for younger pigs could be supplemented with a greater level (45,000 NFP/kg of feed). There were no interactions between protease levels and age. Younger pigs had improved (P < 0.1) SID of CP and most AA (Except Cys, Gly, and Ser). In conclusion, dietary protease supplementation can improve SID of AA in soybean mean independent of pig age. Pigs age can influence AA digestibility where younger pigs have greater AA digestibility.

95 Effects of increasing standardized ileal digestible valine:lysine ratio on growth performance in finishing pigs

Abstract Two experiments evaluated the effects of increasing standardized ileal digestible (SID) Val:Lys ratio on the growth performance of 38 to 67 kg (Exp. 1) and 90 to 116 kg (Exp. 2) finishing pigs. In Exp. 1, pigs (n = 647; DNA 600 × 241) were randomly allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments with 8 or 9 pigs per pen and 12 replications per treatment. Diets were corn-soybean meal-based, and low and high Val diets were manufactured and blended to create intermediate Val:Lys ratio diets. Diets were formulated to contain 0.90% SID Lys, and treatments consisted of SID Val:Lys ratios of 60%, 63%, 66%, 69%, 72%, and 75%. At the conclusion of the 27-d study, all pigs were fed a common diet for 30 d and then randomly re-allotted to 1 of 6 diets formulated to contain 0.65% SID Lys and SID Val:Lys ratios of 63%, 66%, 69%, 72%, 75%, and 78% (Exp. 2). In both experiments blood samples were collected from 3 pigs per pen on d 15 for plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) analysis. In Exp. 1, final body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and average daily feed intake (ADFI) increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) as Val:Lys increased (Table). Pigs fed the diet with 66% SID Val:Lys ratio had the greatest ADG, whereas pigs fed 72% SID Val:Lys ratio had the greatest ADFI. As the Val:Lys ratio increased, gain to feed ratio (G:F) decreased (linear, P < 0.05). Valine and Lys intake increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) as the Val:Lys ratio increased with the greatest intake observed at 72% SID Val:Lys. Valine and Lys intake per kg of gain increased (linear, P < 0.05) as the level of Val in the diet increased. Plasma urea nitrogen decreased (linear, P < 0.05) as the Val:Lys ratio increased. In Exp. 2, ADG and ADFI increased (linear, P < 0.05) as Val:Lys increased. However, for ADG there was little improvement from feeding greater than 69% SID Val:Lys. There were no linear or quadratic effects (P > 0.05) for SID Val:Lys on G:F or PUN. Valine intake, Lys intake, and Val intake per kg of gain increased (linear, P < 0.05) as the Val:Lys ratio increased. There were no differences (P > 0.05) observed in Lys intake per kg of gain. Based on the results of this study, it appears that 66% SID Val:Lys ratio maximizes ADG in 38to 67 kg pigs, and only small increases in ADG were observed when feeding greater than 69% SID Val:Lys for 90 to 116 kg finishing pigs.

11 The effect of increased standardized ileal digestible lysine through increased soybean meal during late gestation on lactating sow and litter performance

Abstract A total of 87 sows (Line 241, DNA) and their offspring were used to evaluate the effect of increasing standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine through increasing soybean meal (SBM) concentration in late gestation diets on lactating sow and litter performance. Sows were blocked by parity and body weight (BW) on approximately d 90 of gestation and allotted to 1 of 3 treatments with 29 replications per treatment. Diets included increasing SID lysine (0.60, 0.80, or 1.00%) through increased SBM (14, 21, or 29% of the diet). Sows received approximately 2.04 kg/d of their treatment diet for an average SID Lys intake of 11.9, 15.8, or 19.9 g/d, respectively. Diets were fed from d 90 of gestation until farrowing. After farrowing, all females were fed a common lactation diet containing 1.10% SID Lys until weaning (19 d post-farrow). Sow BW, caliper score, and backfat and loin depth were collected on d 90, upon entry into the farrowing house (d 110), and at weaning. Urine samples were collected on d 90 and 110 of gestation to ascertain urinary creatinine concentrations. Litters were cross-fostered within sow treatment by 48 h after farrowing to equalize litter size. Parity was included in the statistical model as a fixed effect with females being classified as either a primiparous (n = 35) or multiparous (n = 52) sow. Body weight gain from d 90 to 110 of gestation increased as SID Lys increased (linear, P < 0.001; Table). There were no differences in starting litter size or piglet birth weight with increasing SID Lys in late gestation (linear, P > 0.10). Change in urinary creatinine level from d 90 to 110 of gestation tended to decrease as SID Lys increased in the diet (linear, P = 0.063) suggesting that less muscle catabolism occurred with increasing SID Lys. Piglet average daily gain (ADG) from d 2 to 10 of lactation linearly increased as SID Lys increased (P = 0.017), but not from d 2 to weaning. From d 2 until weaning, litters from sows fed the 0.80% SID Lys gestation diet had the greatest litter gain (quadratic, P = 0.044). Pre-weaning mortality from birth until d 2 of lactation was greatest for sows fed 0.80% SID Lys (quadratic, P = 0.025). There was a parity × gestation diet interaction for pre-weaning mortality from d 2 to weaning (P = 0.049) where mortality increased as SID Lys increased in primiparous sows but decreased in multiparous sows. In conclusion, increased SID Lys through increased SBM linearly increased late gestation sow BW gain and piglet ADG during the first portion of lactation. However, litters from sows on the 0.80% SID Lys treatment exhibited the highest litter ADG during late lactation and overall.

141 Determination of the optimum standardized ileal digestible lysine for nursery pigs fed high levels of dietary fiber

Abstract An experiment was conducted to determine the optimum standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys for nursery swine-fed high levels of dietary fiber. A total of 2,525 pigs [PIC 337 × 1050, initial body weight (BW) = 6.5 kg], placed in pens of 36 mixed-sex pigs, were used in a 42-d trial. Pigs were allotted to 1 of 5 dietary treatments with 14 replicates per treatment. Increasing dietary SID Lys concentrations of 1.14, 1.22, 1.30, 1.38, and 1.45% were obtained by blending the 1.14% and the 1.45% SID Lys diets via Big Dutchman DryExact Pro feeding system (Big Dutchman, Holland, MI). The different SID Lys levels were obtained by changing the inclusion rate of soybean meal, which ranged from 15 to 28%. The experimental diets contained sugar beet pulp and soy hulls, resulting in an NDF level of 10.5%. Experimental diets were fed for 17 d and followed by a common corn, soybean meal, and 10% DDGS diet with 1.30% SID Lys from d 17 to 42. Pigs were weighed on d 0, 17, and 42 to calculate average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and gain to feed ratio (G:F). From d 0 to 17, a quadratic (P < 0.05) improvement in ADG and ADFI was observed for pigs fed increasing SID Lys up to 1.38%, plateauing thereafter. Pigs fed increasing SID Lys had linearly (P = 0.001) improved G:F (Table 1). From d 17 to 42, there was no evidence (P > 0.10) for differences in ADG, yet ADFI increased linearly (P = 0.004) while G:F decreased linearly (P = 0.001) for pigs previously fed increasing concentrations of SID Lys. Overall (d 0 to 42) for pigs fed increasing SID Lys, ADG and ADFI increased quadratically (P < 0.05) up to 1.38% SID Lys, whereas G:F increased linearly (P = 0.001) up to 1.45% SID Lys. Mortality and removal rate was quadratically influenced (P < 0.05) by feeding increasing SID Lys. Our findings suggest feeding weaned pigs from d 0 to 17 a diet containing 1.38% SID Lys is optimal for growth performance while minimizing mortality and removal rate.

27 Standardized ileal digestible lysine to metabolizable energy ratio equations for 12 to 127 kg boars, gilts, immunocastrated gilts and boars

Abstract We aimed to determine the standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) to metabolizable energy (ME) ratio equations for 12 to 127 kg boars, gilts, immunocastred gilts (IC gilts), and barrows (IC barrows). An average of 3,545 split-gender pigs (PIC 337×Camborough, initially 11.98 ± 1.26 kg) were used in a 21-d trial followed by a 21-d wash-out period in 2 replicates, totaling six feeding periods. In feeding phase 6, both genders were immunized against gonadotropin-releasing hormone (administrated with Vivax, Zoetis, São Paulo, SP, Brazil). Pens of pigs were weighed, blocked by body weight, and randomly allotted to 1 of 5 treatments consisting of 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120% of PIC SID Lys:Mcal of ME recommendations for mixed gender between boars, barrows, and gilts for each phase. The treatment diets were corn-soybean-meal-based and contained 3,300 Kcal of ME/kg. There were six split-gender pens•treatment-1•replicate-1 •phase-1 and 30 pigs/pen. Data were analyzed using generalized linear and nonlinear mixed models with a pen as the experimental unit. Competing models included linear, quadratic polynomial (QP), broken-line linear (BLL), and broken-line quadratic (BLQ) for average daily gain (ADG) and gain to feed ratio (G:F). There was no significant gender by quadratic coefficient interactions in all phases of this study (P > 0.05), then the mixed gender equation was determined, and the intact boars and gilts equation was estimated by the PIC overall difference in efficiency between genders. In the immunocastrated phase, after second dose, the mixed gender optimum level was determined and the equations for IC gilts and barrows was estimated by the differences in efficiency observed in the phase 6 of the two replicates. The SID Lys to calorie ratio recommended is based on the average for ADG and G:F (Table 1). Approximately 98.4% and 99.2% of maximum ADG and G:F were achieved at these levels, respectively, and these equations were similar compared with previous PIC biological requirements (Orlando et al., 2021).

140 Response of 6 to 13 kg nursery pigs to increasing SID Arg:Lys

Abstract Newly weaned pigs (n = 480; PIC 337 × 1050; Genus, Hendersonville, TN) with an initial body weight (BW) of 6.20 ± 0.61 kg were used in a dose-response study to evaluate the effects of increasing standardized ileal digestible (SID) Arg:Lys in nursery pigs. At weaning, pigs were placed into 48 pens with five barrows and five gilts per pen and randomly assigned to one of six dietary treatments. The experimental diets were formulated with increasing levels of SID Arg by replacing corn starch, glycine, and L-alanine with L-arginine. Levels of SID Arg:Lys ranged from 45 to 145%. Diets were sub-limiting in SID Lys and exceeded all other essential amino acid requirements. Furthermore, diets were formulated to be isocaloric, isonitrogenous, and met or exceeded NRC (2012) vitamin and mineral recommendations. The experimental diets were fed in two feeding phases from d 0 to 10 and d 10 to 27, with adjustments made to account for the decreasing Lys requirement of the pigs. Pigs were subsequently fed a common diet for the remaining 14 d of the nursery period to determine carryover effects. Pigs and feeders were weighed at the beginning and end of each dietary phase for the calculation of average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed efficiency (gain to feed ratio; G:F). The data were fit using linear regression with R version 4.3.1 (R Core Team, 2023). The model included linear and quadratic effects of SID Arg:Lys and initial BW. Pen was the experimental unit, and results were considered significant at P ≤ 0.05 and a tendency at 0.05 < P ≤ 0.10. There was a significant linear and quadratic effect of SID Arg:Lys on BW on d 27 (P ≤ 0.024), where BW was maximized at a SID Arg:Lys 97.09%. From d 0 to 27 there was a linear and quadratic tendency of SID Arg:Lys on ADFI (P = 0.069), where feed intake was maximized at a SID Arg:Lys of 97.00%. Furthermore, there tended to be a linear and quadratic effect of SID Arg:Lys on ADG from d0 to 27 (P ≤ 0.081), where ADG was maximized at a SID Arg:Lys of 95.65%. There was no evidence for an effect of SID Arg:Lys on G:F at any timepoint throughout the trial (P ≥ 0.298). In conclusion, SID Arg:Lys linearly and quadratically impacted ADFI and ADG in 6 to 13 kg nursery pigs, where ADG was maximized at a SID Arg:Lys of 95.65%, but ADFI was maximized at a SID Arg:Lys of 97.00%. Together, these data suggest that the SID Arg:Lys requirement of nursery pigs is greater than NRC (2012) recommendations, and excessive Arg supplementation may have negative consequences on growth performance.

274 Socialization of piglets during suckling enhanced feed intake after weaning but did not alter their response to dietary amino acid concentration

Abstract The present study hypothesized that pre-weaning socialized piglets would reduce damaging behavior and when fed an increased dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys (and amino acids) to net energy (NE) ratio post-weaning would increase early post weaning feed intake (FI) and growth performance, and in nursery pigs. Socializing included two groups of five sows and their litters for which farrowing pen walls were removed allowing piglets to co-mingle for 10 d before weaning (S) whereas traditionally housed piglets pertained to housing a single sow with her litter (T; n = 15). At weaning, 120 mixed-gender piglets [7.2 ± 0.7 kg body weight (BW)] were allocated based on litter origin, sow parity, and piglet BW to 12 pens equipped with single-space electronic feeding stations with 10 pigs/pen for a 41-d study. In this 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, factors were litter background (socialized vs. traditional) and dietary SID Lys: NE (High 1.32 vs. Low 1.15 SID Lys:NE MJ/kg). Daily individual FI and BW and skin injuries at different timepoints after weaning were determined. Wheat-barley based diets were isoenergetic (10.6 MJ/kg) and offered in two phases (i.e., d 0-14 and d 14-41). The day after weaning, socializing reduced the proportion of piglets with more than five skin injuries from 45.7% to 3.0% compared with traditional housing (P < 0.05). Early post-weaning, daily FI was 50% greater for S-LowLys:NE pigs than S-HighLys:NE on d1, then, T-LowLys:NE was greatest (~25% above other treatments) during d 3-6 (all P < 0.05). The trend maintained during d 6-8 with T-LowLys:NE and S-HighLys:NE being similar each other (P > 0.05). The average number of visits per day during the first 10 d was greater (P < 0.01) for S-HighLys:NE and T-LowLys:NE (33 visits each) compared with T-HighLys:NE (24 visits). Overall, S-HighLys:NE pigs tended (P < 0.10) to have a greater end BW (23.8 vs. 22.1 kg) and a greater d 0-41 average daily gain (ADG) than T-HighLys:NE (530 vs. 472 g/d). For d22-29, the average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed efficiency (FE), were greater for S-HighLys:NE and T-LowLys:NE compared with S-LowLys:NE and T-HighLys:NE (P < 0.05). No other meaningful interactions were observed between socializing and Lys:NE on growth performance. However, looking at main factors, socializing increased ADG during d 29-41 by 9% (P = 0.01) coinciding with a 4% greater FE (P = 0.09). The data suggest that traditionally housed piglets fed a HighLys:NE diet post-weaning had lower daily FI and growth performance compared with T-LowLys:NE and socialized piglets irrespective of the Lys:NE contrast. In conclusion, the present study led to a better understanding of nutritional requirements and FI in situations with different pre-weaning housing schemes of piglets. In the present conditions, pre-weaning socialization of pigs may stimulate feed intake earlier post-weaning and allow a better transition independently from the Lys (and amino acid) to NE ratio.

143 Effect of increasing dietary net energy content at a constant lysine on feed intake and performance of 7 to 11 kg and 11 to 20 kg pigs

Abstract Information about NE requirements for nursery pigs is still limited. Therefore, 2 experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary NE contents on growth performance of 7 to 11 kg pigs (Exp. 1) and 11 to 20 kg pigs (Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, mixed-sex pigs (n = 192; PIC; initial body weight (BW) of 7.8 ± 1.07 kg] were assigned to 4 diets for 14 d. Diets 1 to 4 were formulated to contain 4 levels of NE (9.8, 10.1, 10.4 and 10.7 MJ/kg) and adequate in all AA with standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys being constant at 1.42%. In Exp. 2, mixed-sex pigs (n = 192; PIC; initial BW of 11.2 ± 1.54 kg) were assigned to 4 diets for 21 d. Diets 1 to 4 contained 4 levels of NE (9.6, 9.9, 10.2 and 10.5 MJ/kg) and adequate in all AA (1.32% SID Lys). For both studies, there were 6 pen replicates (4 entire males and 4 gilts/pen) per treatment, and diets were based on corn, soybean meal, whey powder, wheat bran and soy oil. Pigs had ad libitum access to feed (mash) and water. Individual pigs and pen feed disappearance were weighed weekly to calculate average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed efficiency gain to feed ratio (G:F). Data were analyzed by ANOVA using the GLM procedure of SAS with pen as the experimental unit. In Exp. 1, ADFI tended to decrease (quadratic; P ≤ 0.08) with increasing NE levels during d 0 to 7 and d 8 to 14. The ADG during d 0 to 7 tended to be greater (158, 192, 187 and 152 g for diets 1 to 4; quadratic; P = 0.08) at 10.1 MJ/kg NE; however, the overall ADG (d 0 to 14) was not affected by the NE levels. Although not significant, G:F, Lys utilization efficiency were greatest at 10.1 MJ/kg NE for the overall period. In Exp. 2, ADFI decreased (827, 783, 768 and 749 g for diets 1 to 4; linear; P = 0.05) with increasing NE levels during d 15 to 21 but was not affected (P > 0.05) for other periods. The ADG (d 8 to 14) tended to be greater at 9.6 MJ/kg NE (quadratic; P = 0.06) and G:F (d 15 to 21) tended to be greater at a dietary NE of 10.2 MJ/kg (linear; P = 0.10). However, the overall (d 0 to 21) ADG and G:F were not affected (P > 0.05) by NE levels. Although not significant, G:F and Lys utilization efficiency were greatest at a dietary NE of 10.2 MJ/kg for the overall period. These results indicate that G:F of 7 to 11 kg pigs and 11 to 20 kg pigs maximized at a dietary NE content of 10.1 MJ/kg and 10.2 MJ/kg, which correspond to 1.41 and 1.29 g SID Lys/MJ NE, respectively.

PSV-15 Effect of functional amino acids and fiber on growth performance of post-weaning pigs

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of increasing levels of functional amino acids (FAA), including Met, Thr, and Trp with 1.4% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys on performance and the effect of high levels of fiber when high levels of FAA combined. A total of 216 pigs [21 d old; 6.46 ± 0.63 kg body weight (BW)] were allotted to one of 6 treatments with 3 pigs of single sex per pen, and 12 replicates/treatment. Treatments were: 1) Control basal diet (BD), 2) BD + 23% more Met+Cys (HMet), 3) BD + 22% more Thr (HThr), 4) BD + 20% more Trp (HTrp), 5) BD + 20% more Met, Thr, and Trp (HFAA, with 9% NDF and 4%ADF), 6) HFAA+ high fiber (27% NDF and 18% ADF in diet by adding soy hulls at expense of corn, HFAA+HF). The experiment lasted for 42 d and pigs were fed experimental diets for 21 d followed by a common diet for the last 21 d. Pigs fed HFAA+HF diet were initially fed HFAA diet for the first 8 d and followed by HFAA+HF diet for the next 13 d, and fed the common diet during the last 21 d. On d 0, 9, 21, and 42, BW and feed intake were recorded, and fecal scores (1 as normal to 4 as watery diarrhea) were assessed during the trial. Data were analyzed using the lme4 package of R 4.1.2, and the statistical models included the fixed effect of treatment and random effect of sex and BW block. Growth performance data were analyzed as single factor ANOVA, whereas stool quality was analyzed using ordinal model. Contrasts were used to test the effects of FAA (by comparing treatments 2, 3, 4, and 5 to BD) and fiber (by comparing HFAA+HF to HFAA). Pigs fed HFAA had reduced (P < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) from d 21 to 42 and tended (P < 0.10) to have reduced overall ADG compared with BD (Table 1). Increasing individual amino acids did not affect performance, with the exception that pigs fed HTrp tended (P < 0.10) to have increased gain to feed ratio (G:F) from d 21 to 42 compared with BD. Greater fiber content did not affect ADG or ADFI; however, it reduced (P < 0.05) G:F during the whole trial compared with HFAA. Treatment did not influence stool quality. In conclusion, combination of increased amounts of Met, Thr, and Trp with SID 1.4% Lys under non-disease challenged conditions resulted in a reduction of performance, but this was not the case with increased individual amino acids, and increased fiber content with increased FAA which reduced feed efficiency of pigs.

155 Standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids in soybean meal, fermented soybean meal, and soy protein concentrate fed to nursery pigs

Abstract Accurate information of amino acid (AA) digestibility in protein supplements is critical in formulating diets for nursery pigs. Soybean products are widely used in nursery pig diets due to the high crude protein (CP) concentrations. The objective of the present study was to determine the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA in soybean meal, 3 sources of fermented SBM (FSBM), and soy protein concentrate (SPC) fed to nursery pigs. Ten barrows with an initial body weight of 10.5 kg (standard deviation = 0.9) were surgically fitted with T-cannulas at the distal ileum. The animals were assigned to a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design with 10 animals, 5 experimental diets, and 5 periods to obtain 10 observations per diet. Five diets were prepared to contain SBM (48.5% CP), 3 sources of FSBM (A, B, and C; 52.6% CP, 55.1% CP, and 49.8% CP, respectively), or SPC (58.4% CP) as the sole source of AA. Each period consisted of 4 d of adaptation period and 3 d of ileal digesta collection period. The values of basal endogenous losses of AA reported in the literature were used to calculate the SID of AA by correcting the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) values. Additionally, a 2-step in vitro procedure modified for nursery pigs was conducted to determine the in vitro ileal disappearance of CP in the 5 ingredients. The AID of all indispensable AA except His and Lys in FSBM-A and FSBM-B was greater (P < 0.05) than that in SBM, whereas AID values for all AA except Trp in SPC did not differ from the values in SBM. The SID of Leu and Trp in FSBM-A and FSBM-B was greater (P < 0.05) than that in SBM or SPC. The SID of all AA in SPC was not different from that in SBM. In vitro ileal disappearance of CP in 3 sources of FSBM was greater (P < 0.001) than that in SBM or SPC. In conclusion, in vitro ileal disappearance of protein was greater in fermented soybean meal compared with soybean meal or soy protein concentrate whereas the standardized ileal digestibility of most amino acids was comparable among the soybean-derived ingredients.

Standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids and metabolizable energy in three sources of high-protein corn distillers dried grains fed to weanling pigs

Two experiments were conducted to test the null hypothesis that there are no differences in the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and metabolizable energy (ME) among three sources of high-protein distillers dried grains (HP-DDG) fed to weanling pigs. The three sources included an experimental HP-DDG product and two commercial HP-DDG products (i.e., HP-DDG 40 and HP-DDG 50) that were fed to weanling pigs. In experiment 1, eight barrows (initial body weight: 11.09 kg) were allotted to one of four diets using a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with four diets and four periods of seven days in each square. A nitrogen-free diet and three diets containing each source of HP-DDG as the sole source of AA were prepared. Results indicated that values for the SID of Lys in the experimental HP-DDG; HP-DDG 50, and HP-DDG 40 were 0.524, 0.638, and 0.642, respectively. The SID of most AA in the experimental HP-DDG was less (P < 0.05) than in the other sources of HP-DDG, but no differences were observed between HP-DDG 40 and HP-DDG 50. In experiment 2, thirty-two weanling pigs (initial body weight: 18.0 kg) were randomly allotted to one of four diets. A corn diet was formulated to contain corn as the sole source of energy and three additional diets contained corn and each source of HP-DDG. Pigs were housed individually in metabolism crates and feces and urine were collected separately for four days after five days of adaptation. Digestible energy (DE) and ME in the three sources of HP-DDG were calculated by difference. Results from experiment 2 indicated that the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy (GE) in the corn diet was greater (P < 0.05) than in the diets containing the experimental HP-DDG or HP-DDG 40, and the ATTD of GE in the diets containing the experimental HP-DDG or HP-DDG 50 was greater (P < 0.05) than in the diet containing HP-DDG 40. On a dry matter basis, ME in the experimental HP-DDG, HP-DDG 40, and HP-DDG 50 were 17.05, 16.72, and 18.23 MJ/kg, respectively, with the ME of HP-DDG 50 being greater (P < 0.05) than in HP-DDG 40, but not different from the ME in the experimental HP-DDG. In conclusion, the SID of most AA in HP-DDG 40 and HP-DDG 50 was greater than in the experimental HP-DDG. The DE and ME in HP-DDG 50 was greater than in HP-DDG 40, but DE and ME in HP-DDG 40 were not different from DE and ME in the experimental HP-DDG.

153 Standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids and concentration of metabolizable energy in three sources of corn protein fed to weanling pigs

Abstract Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA), apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy (GE), and concentrations of digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) are not different among three sources of corn protein (i.e., new corn protein, ANDVantage 50Y, ANDVantage 40Y) when fed to weanling pigs. In Exp. 1, ileal-cannulated barrows [n = 8; initial body weight (BW) = 11.09 kg; SD = 0.46] were fed an N-free diet or three diets containing each corn protein as the sole source of AA. Pigs were allotted to a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 4 diets and 4 periods of 7 d in each square. Ileal digesta were collected for 2 d and the SID of AA was calculated. In Exp. 2, weanling pigs (n = 32; initial BW = 18.0 kg; SD = 1.21) were fed a corn-based basal diet or three diets containing corn and each source of corn protein. Pigs were housed individually in metabolism crates and feces and urine were quantitatively collected for 5 d after 7 d of adaptation. Concentrations of DE and ME in all diets were calculated and DE and ME in the three sources of corn protein were calculated by difference. Data from both experiments were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS with pig as the experimental unit. In Exp. 1, the statistical model included diet as the fixed effect and square, pig, and period as random effects. In Exp. 2, the model included ingredient as the fixed effect. Results from Exp. 1 demonstrated that the SID of all indispensable AA except Arg and His in ANDVantage 40Y and ANDVantage 50Y were greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) compared with the new corn protein, but no differences were observed between ANDVantage 50Y and ANDVantage 40Y (Table 1). Results from Exp. 2 indicated that on a dry matter basis, concentration of DE in ANDVantage 50Y was greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) than in ANDVantage 40Y, the new corn protein, and corn, but ME in ANDVantage 50Y was not different from the ME in the new corn protein (Table 2). Concentration of ME in the new corn protein was not different from ME in corn, ANDVantage 40Y, or ANDVantage 50Y. In conclusion, the new source of corn protein had concentrations of AA that were not different from ANDVantage 50 Y, but this new corn protein had decreased digestibility of AA compared with other corn proteins. The new corn protein also had less DE compared with ANDVantage 50Y, but ME in the new corn protein was not different from corn, ANDVantage 40Y, or ANDVantage 50Y.

PSV-2 Digestible indispensable amino acid scores (DIAAS) in pork products

Abstract The “Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score” (DIAAS) method measures protein quality in human foods. However, values for DIAAS are not available for some pork products. Therefore, this study aimed to determine DIAAS values for nine pork products. Nine diets contained one pork product (i.e., back ribs, shoulder butt, tenderloin, Coppa ham, prosciutto ham, speck ham, chorizo, Italian sausage, and bratwurst) as the only source of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA). Nine ileal cannulated gilts with an initial average body weight of 50.3 ± 3.8 kg were used in a 9 × 6 incomplete Latin square with 9 diets and six 7-d periods. Ileal digesta were collected on d 6 and 7 of each period. There were, therefore, six replicate pigs per diet, but no pig was fed the same diet twice. A nitrogen-free diet was used to measure basal endogenous losses of CP and AA, and this diet was fed to all pigs in one separate 7-d period. The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) and DIAAS of each pork product were calculated. Reference ratios were used for children from 6 mo to 3 yr old and individuals older than 3 yr. Data were analyzed by ANOVA using the MIXED procedure of SAS with pig as the experimental unit. Diet was the fixed effect and replicate pig was the random effect. Results indicated that for both age groups, prosciutto ham had greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) DIAAS than all other pork products (Table 1), which may be because prosciutto is from the hind leg of the pig, which contains less connective tissue. Prosciutto was also not smoked, which may contribute to the greater DIAAS values for this protein because smoking may reduce DIAAS. For children from 6 mo to 3 yr old, tenderloin, Coppa ham, and Italian sausage had greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) DIAAS than chorizo and bratwurst sausages, back ribs, and shoulder butt. However, for individuals older than 3 yr, Coppa ham had greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) DIAAS than all other pork cuts and sausages. The observation that back ribs and shoulder butt had decreased DIAAS than tenderloin is likely because tender cuts with less connective tissues tend to have greater concentrations of indispensable AA with less non-nitrogen content. In addition, for both age groups, there was no limiting AA for all pork products, except that chorizo sausage was limiting in sulfur AA for children from 6 mo to 3 yr old. In conclusion, data from this experiment demonstrated that all pork products have “good” or “excellent” protein quality for individuals older than 6 mo of age, indicating that these food ingredients may be used to complement lower-quality proteins and provide a meal with all indispensable AA.

160 Awardee Talk: Impact of indigestible protein on coccidiosis and meat and bone meal autoclaving time-related reduction in amino acid digestibility for broiler chickens and growing pigs

Abstract Meat and bone meal (MBM) is a byproduct of the processing of livestock in the rendering industry. Because of its highly digestible protein and balanced amino acid profile, MBM is a valuable protein source in swine and poultry diets. Rendering may reduce amino acid digestibility of MBM because of heat damage to MBM, and the effect of heat damage on amino acid digestibility in MBM may be different between broiler chickens and growing pigs. For this reason, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of autoclaving on standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acid in MBM fed to broiler chickens and growing pigs. Meat and bone meal from the same batch was autoclaved at 134°C for 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 min, generating 7 samples. Eight experimental diets consisted of 7 diets containing each MBM sample as a sole source of nitrogen and a nitrogen-free diet. In Exp. 1, male broiler chickens [n = 656; initial body weight (BW) = 777 ± 69 g] at d 18 post hatching were assigned to the 8 diets in a randomized complete block design with BW as a blocking factor. On d 23, birds were euthanized by CO2 asphyxiation and dissected for the collection of ileal digesta. In Exp. 2, barrows (n = 16; initial BW = 25.7 ± 1.0 kg) surgically fitted with T-cannulas at the distal ileum were allotted to duplicate 8 × 4 incomplete Latin square design with the 8 diets and 4 periods. Each experimental period consisted of 5-d adaptation and 2-d ileal digesta collection periods. Data for Exp. 1 and 2 were pooled as a 2 × 7 factorial treatment arrangement with the effects of species (i.e., broiler chickens or pigs) and autoclaving time (i.e., 0 to 180 min). The basal endogenous losses of most AA in growing pigs were greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) compared with broiler chickens. The SID of nitrogen and tryptophan in MBM linearly decreased (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in both species with increasing autoclaving time. An interaction between species and quadratic effect of autoclaving time was observed (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in SID of arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, and valine in MBM. Specifically, the SID of lysine both linearly and quadratically decreased (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in broiler chickens (85.0 to 56.0%), whereas the SID of lysine only linearly decreased (P &amp;lt; 0.05) in growing pigs (79.5 to 46.7%) as autoclaving time increased. In conclusion, given the species differences in amino acid digestibility response to the severity of heat damage, target species should be considered when using amino acid digestibility value of MBM in diet formulation.

168 Effects of feeding barley-based diets differing in fermentable starch and fiber on nutrient digestion and body composition in weaned pigs

Abstract Hulled and hull-less barley grains containing low insoluble fiber are alternative energy sources in weaning diets but are typically not part of weaned pig diets. The range in fermentable starch and fiber content among barley cultivars presents opportunities to investigate whether these fermentable carbohydrates of barley grain do influence nutrient digestion, gut short chain fatty acid (SCFA) profile and body composition. To explore, pigs [n = 40; body weight (BW) = 8.6 kg; 1-wk post-weaning] were housed individually and fed 1 of 4 diets containing 600 to 705 g of cereal grain/kg: 1) low-fermentable wheat (LFW); 2) high β-glucan, hull-less barley (HFBB); 3) high amylose, hull-less barley (HFAB); or 4) low-fermentable hulled barley (LFB). Diets provided 10.2 and 9.8 MJ NE/kg, and 1.32 and 1.21 g standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine/MJ NE for phase 1 (d 0–14) and phase 2 (d 15–28), respectively. At the end of the trial, feces were collected, and pigs were slaughtered to collect digesta and the carcass that was subsequently ground. Subsamples of feces, digesta, and carcasses were freeze-dried and analyzed. The apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of crude protein (CP) and gross energy (GE) did not differ among diets. The AID of β-glucan was 3 times greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) for LFW than HFBB and HFAB, while AID of starch was 12% less (P &amp;lt; 0.05) for HFAB than the other diets. Apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of GE and CP was 4.2 and 8.9% less (P &amp;lt; 0.05), respectively, for the 3 barley diets than the wheat diet. The apparent hindgut fermentation (AHF) of β-glucan was 2.6 times greater (P &amp;lt; 0.05) for HFAB and HFBB than LFW, while AHF of starch was 7.5 times greater for HFAB than LFW. The calculated NE value was greatest (P &amp;lt; 0.05) for LFW, intermediate for HFBB and HFAB, and least for LFB. Among diets, HFAB increased (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the concentration of butyrate (indicator of gut health) and propionate in cecal and colonic digesta, with butyrate up to 50% more (P &amp;lt; 0.05) than that of LFW. Carcass protein and lipid concentration did not differ among pigs fed the 4 diets. In conclusion, feeding barley instead of wheat grain to weaned pigs reduced diet nutrient digestibility but did not affect carcass protein and lipid concentration. Feeding high amylose barley increased gut SCFA concentration. Barley grain with increasing fermentable carbohydrates can thus be included as alternative ingredient in diets of young pigs.

17 Effect of branched-chain amino acids on lactating sow and piglet performance

Abstract Sows (n = 360 PIC 1050 and Genesus) were used to investigate the effect of various branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) levels on sow lactation and litter growth performance. Upon entering the farrowing room, sows were blocked by parity group (P0, P2, P3+) and randomly assigned to one of six dietary treatments containing various levels of BCAA. Experimental diets were formulated to various standardized ileal digestible (SID) leucine, isoleucine, and valine levels by replacing cornstarch with L-leucine, L-isoleucine, and L-valine. Levels of the BCAA were expressed as ratios to SID lysine and were formulated at 114 or 180 for Leu, 56 or 64 for Ile, and 64 or 120 for Val. Diets were formulated to be isocaloric (3.23 Mcal ME/kg) and met or exceeded all other NRC (2012) essential amino acid and vitamin and mineral recommendations. Sow body weight (BW), backfat, and body condition score were recorded at the time of entry into the farrowing room and at the time of weaning. Piglet litter weights were recorded after cross-fostering and at weaning to determine litter growth rate. Data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with fixed effects of dietary treatment and parity group and a random effect of lactation group. The models were fit using R version 4.3.1 (R Core Team, 2023). The sow and her litter were the experimental unit, and results were considered significant if P ≤ 0.05 and a tendency if 0.05 &amp;lt; P ≤ 0.10. Sows nursed piglets for 21.3 d (P = 0.998). The mean parity by treatment ranged from 3.8 to 3.9 (P = 0.999). After farrowing, the mean estimated sow BW was 219 kg, with a range between treatments of 216 to 221 kg (P = 0.651). On average, sows gained 2.82% of their BW (P = 0.696) with an average daily feed intake (ADFI) of 8.75 kg/d (P = 0.932). However, as expected, sow Leu, Ile, Val, and total BCAA intakes were different across treatments (P ≤ 0.001). Sows entered the farrowing house with an average of 11.50 mm of backfat (P = 0.919) and lost 6.04% backfat through lactation (P = 0.667). Sows started the trial with an average of 14.1 piglets/sow (P = 0.967) and weaned 12.6 piglets per sow (P = 0.981) with a piglet average daily gain of 0.22 kg/d (P = 0.193) and a daily litter growth rate of 2.89 kg/d (P = 0.291). In conclusion, there was no evidence of an effect of the various leucine, isoleucine, and valine levels evaluated in this study on lactating sow and piglet performance.
