The ALMA Survey of 70 μm Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). XI. Statistical Study of Early Fragmentation

Fragmentation during the early stages of high-mass star formation is crucial for understanding the formation of high-mass clusters. We investigated fragmentation within 39 high-mass star-forming clumps as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Survey of 70 μm Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES) survey. Considering projection effects, we have estimated core separations for 839 cores identified from the continuum emission and found mean values between 0.08 and 0.32 pc within each clump. We find compatibility of the observed core separations and masses with the thermal Jeans length and mass, respectively. We also present subclump structures revealed by the 7 m array continuum emission. Comparison of the Jeans parameters using clump and subclump densities with the separation and masses of gravitationally bound cores suggests that they can be explained by clump fragmentation, implying the simultaneous formation of subclumps and cores within rather than a step-by-step hierarchical fragmentation. The number of cores in each clump positively correlates with the clump surface density and the number expected from the thermal Jeans fragmentation. We also find that the higher the fraction of protostellar cores, the larger the dynamic range of the core mass, implying that the cores are growing in mass as the clump evolves. The ASHES sample exhibits various fragmentation patterns: aligned, scattered, clustered, and subclustered. Using the Q -parameter, which can help distinguish between centrally condensed and subclustered spatial core distributions, we finally find that in the early evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation, cores tend to follow a subclustered distribution.

The ALMA Survey of 70 μm Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). X. Hot Gas Reveals Deeply Embedded Star Formation

Massive infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are considered to host the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. In particular, 70 μm dark IRDCs are the colder and more quiescent clouds. At a scale of about 5000 au using formaldehyde (H2CO) emission, we investigate the kinetic temperature of dense cores in 12 IRDCs obtained from the pilot Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Survey of 70 μm dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). Compared to the 1.3 mm dust continuum and other molecular lines, such as C18O and deuterated species, we find that H2CO is mainly sensitive to low-velocity outflow components rather than to quiescent gas expected in the early phases of star formation. The kinetic temperatures of these components range from 26 to 300 K. The Mach number reaches about 15 with an average value of about 4, suggesting that the velocity distribution of gas traced by H2CO is significantly influenced by a supersonic nonthermal component. In addition, we detect warm line emission from HC3N and OCS in 14 protostellar cores, which requires high excitation temperatures (E u /k ∼ 100 K). These results show that some of the embedded cores in the ASHES fields are in an advanced evolutionary stage, previously unexpected for 70 μm dark IRDCs.

Probing infrared dark clouds with class I methanol masers and thermal molecular emission using the Onsala 20 meter telescope

ABSTRACT Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) represent the earliest stage of high-mass star formation and host molecular cores at different states of activity from quiet state without any IR-signature of star formation to active state with IR-signatures and pronounced maser activity. Many IRDCs show indications of shocked gas associated with protostar outflows and can contain class I methanol masers (cIMMs). The aim of this study is to probe different types of cores in IRDCs with cIMMs and thermal molecular emission and to investigate the relationship between presence of cIMMs and physical conditions in IRDCs. For a sample of 37 molecular cores, using the 20-m Onsala radio telescope, we collected molecular line data at 44, 85, and 97 GHz for more than 15 species including CH3OH, CH3CCH, and CS. Kinetic temperature of the gas and molecular column densities were obtained. Methanol emission at 44 GHz was detected in 29 sources, with 4 sources are being new discoveries. None of the cores in quiescent state show emission at 44 GHz. Our results testify that cIMM emission is a reliable marker of advanced state of molecular cores. The higher detection rate for intermediate and IR-quiet sources suggests that cIMMs most readily trace the early stages of star formation characterized by moderate IR-signatures. We found that masers with higher flux densities tend to be associated with emission in the CH3CCH lines with higher integrated intensities. Sources undetected at 44 GHz have 4 times lower integrated intensities of CH3CCH and exhibit poorer molecular spectra than the most sources with cIMMs.

The ALMA Survey of 70 μm Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). IX. Physical Properties and Spatial Distribution of Cores in IRDCs

The initial conditions found in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) provide insights on how high-mass stars and stellar clusters form. We have conducted high-angular resolution and high-sensitivity observations toward thirty-nine massive IRDC clumps, which have been mosaicked using the 12 and 7 m arrays from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The targets are 70 μm dark massive (220–4900 M ⊙), dense (>104 cm−3), and cold (∼10–20 K) clumps located at distances between 2 and 6 kpc. We identify an unprecedented number of 839 cores, with masses between 0.05 and 81 M ⊙ using 1.3 mm dust continuum emission. About 55% of the cores are low-mass (<1 M ⊙), whereas ≲1% (7/839) are high-mass (≳27 M ⊙). We detect no high-mass prestellar cores. The most massive cores (MMC) identified within individual clumps lack sufficient mass to form high-mass stars without additional mass feeding. We find that the mass of the MMCs is correlated with the clump surface density, implying denser clumps produce more massive cores. There is no significant mass segregation except for a few tentative detections. In contrast, most clumps show segregation once the clump density is considered instead of mass. Although the dust continuum emission resolves clumps in a network of filaments, some of which consist of hub-filament systems, the majority of the MMCs are not found in the hubs. Our analysis shows that high-mass cores and MMCs have no preferred location with respect to low-mass cores at the earliest stages of high-mass star formation.

Fragmentation of the High-mass “Starless” Core G10.21-0.31: A Coherent Evolutionary Picture for Star Formation

G10.21-0.31 is a 70 μm dark high-mass starless core (M > 300 M ⊙ within r < 0.15 pc) identified in the Spitzer, Herschel, and APEX continuum surveys, and is believed to harbor the initial stages of high-mass star formation. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Submillimeter Array observations to resolve the internal structure of this promising high-mass starless core. Sensitive high-resolution ALMA 1.3 mm dust continuum emission reveals three cores of mass ranging within 11–18 M ⊙, characterized by a turbulent fragmentation. Cores 1, 2, and 3 represent a coherent evolution of three different stages, characterized by outflows (CO and SiO), gas temperature (H2CO), and deuteration (N2D+/N2H+). We confirm the potential for formation of high-mass stars in G10.21 and explore the evolution path of high-mass star formation. Yet, no high-mass prestellar core is present in G10.21. This suggests a dynamical star formation where cores grow in mass over time.

Multi-frequency VLBI observations of maser lines during the 6.7 GHz maser flare in the high-mass young stellar object G24.33+0.14

Context. Recent studies have shown that 6.7 GHz methanol maser flares can be a powerful tool for verifying the mechanisms of maser production and even the specific signatures of accretion rate changes in the early stages of high-mass star formation. Aims. We characterize the spatial structure and evolution of methanol and water masers during a flare of methanol maser emission at 6.7 GHz in the high-mass young stellar object (HMYSO) G24.33+0.14. Methods. Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) was used to image the 6.7 and 12.2 GHz methanol and 22.2 GHz water vapor masers at three epochs guided by monitoring the methanol line with the Torun 32m telescope. The 6.7 GHz maser maps were also obtained with the European VLBI Network (EVN) and Long Baseline Array (LBA) during the flare. The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data were used to find correlations between the 6.7 GHz maser and infrared (IR) fluxes. Results. The 6.7 GHz methanol maser cloudlets are distributed over ~3500 au, and the morphology of most of them is stable although their brightness varies following the course of the total flux density on a timescale of two months. The 12.2 GHz methanol maser cloudlets cover an area an order of magnitude smaller than that of 6.7 GHz emission, and both transitions emerge from the same masing gas. The 22.2 GHz maser cloudlets lie in the central region and show a systematic increase in brightness and moderate changes in size and orientation, together with the velocity drift of the strongest cloudlet during two months of the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observing period. Time lag estimates imply the propagation of changes in the physical conditions of the masing region with a subluminal speed (~0.3c). A tight correlation of IR (4.6 μm) and 6.7 GHz flux densities is found, supporting the radiative pumping model. Proper motion analysis does not reveal any signs of expansion or inflow of the methanol cloudlets within ~6 mas over ~10 yr. Comparison with the 230 GHz Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) data indicates that the methanol masers are distributed in the inner part of the rotating disk, whereas the 22.2 GHz emission traces the compact inner component of the bipolar outflow or a jet structure. Conclusions. The maser morphology in the target is remarkably stable over the course of the flare and is similar to the quiescent state, possibly due to less energetic accretion events that can repeat on a timescale of ~8 yr.

Yamaguchi interferometer survey of protostellar outflows embedded in 70-μm dark infrared dark cloud

AbstractRecent ALMA observations detected protostellar outflows in 70-μm dark infrared dark clouds (IRDCs). These sources are candidates for the initial stages of high-mass star formation. We launched a new survey for free-free emission from outflow shocks using the Yamaguchi Interferometer (YI) at 8 GHz. We aim to catalog “proto-high-mass protostar” candidates that are still in the low to intermediate-mass phase. We selected starless-like clumps without any 70-μm point source from Traficante et al. (2015). We currently detected 82 sources from 167 clumps. 37 of them are fainter than 20 mJy (down to a few mJy). They tend to associate with colder and denser clumps that are suitable for star formation. This fact suggests that, at least, some of them trace star-formation activities. The highest-density clumps are, in fact, associated with several masers and molecular outflows. Furthermore, some of them have already shown a signature of ongoing cluster formation.

The Core Population and Kinematics of a Massive Clump at Early Stages: An Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array View

High-mass star formation theories make distinct predictions on the properties of the prestellar seeds of high-mass stars. Observations of the early stages of high-mass star formation can provide crucial constraints, but they are challenging and scarce. We investigate the properties of the prestellar core population embedded in the high-mass clump AGAL014.492-00.139, and we study the kinematics at the clump and clump-to-core scales. We have analyzed an extensive data set acquired with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array interferometer. Applying a dendrogram analysis to the Band 7 o‐H2D+ data, we identified 22 cores. We fitted their average spectra in local thermodinamic equilibrium conditions, and we analyzed their continuum emission at 0.8 mm. The cores have transonic to mildly supersonic turbulence levels and appear to be mostly low-mass, with . Furthermore, we have analyzed Band 3 observations of the N2H+ (1–0) transition, which traces the large-scale gas kinematics. Using a friend-of-friend algorithm, we identify four main velocity coherent structures, all of which are associated with prestellar and protostellar cores. One of them presents a filament-like structure, and our observations could be consistent with mass accretion toward one of the protostars. In this case, we estimate a mass accretion rate of . Our results support a clump-fed accretion scenario in the target source. The cores in the prestellar stage are essentially low-mass, and they appear to be subvirial and gravitationally bound, unless further support is available, for instance, due to magnetic fields.

Long-term Variability of Class I Methanol Masers in the High-mass Star-forming Region DR21(OH)

High-mass stars play an important role in the interstellar medium, but much remains to be known about their formation. Class I methanol masers may be unique tracers of an early stage of high-mass star formation, and a better understanding of such masers will allow them to be used as more effective probes of the high-mass star-forming process. We present an investigation of the long-term variability of Class I methanol masers at 44 GHz toward the high-mass star-forming region DR21(OH). We compare observations taken in 2017 to observations from 2012, and also to 2001 data from the literature. A total of 57 maser spots were found in the 2017 data, with center velocities ranging between −8.65 to +2.56 km s−1. The masers are arranged in a western and an eastern lobe with two arcs in each lobe that look like bow shocks, consistent with previous observations. The general trend is an increase in intensity from 2001 to 2012, and a decrease from 2012 to 2017. Variability appears to be more prevalent in the inner arc of the western lobe than in the outer arc. We speculate that this may be a consequence of episodic accretion, in which a later accretion event has resulted in ejection of material whose shock reached the inner arc at some point in time after 2001. We conclude that class I methanol masers are variable on long timescales (of the order of 5–10 yr).

The ALMA Survey of 70 μm Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). IV. Star Formation Signatures in G023.477

Abstract With a mass of ∼1000 M ⊙ and a surface density of ∼0.5 g cm−2, G023.477+0.114, also known as IRDC 18310-4, is an infrared dark cloud (IRDC) that has the potential to form high-mass stars and has been recognized as a promising prestellar clump candidate. To characterize the early stages of high-mass star formation, we have observed G023.477+0.114 as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Survey of 70 μm Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages. We have conducted ∼1.″2 resolution observations with ALMA at 1.3 mm in dust continuum and molecular line emission. We have identified 11 cores, whose masses range from 1.1 to 19.0 M ⊙. Ignoring magnetic fields, the virial parameters of the cores are below unity, implying that the cores are gravitationally bound. However, when magnetic fields are included, the prestellar cores are close to virial equilibrium, while the protostellar cores remain sub-virialized. Star formation activity has already started in this clump. Four collimated outflows are detected in CO and SiO. H2CO and CH3OH emission coincide with the high-velocity components seen in the CO and SiO emission. The outflows are randomly oriented for the natal filament and the magnetic field. The position-velocity diagrams suggest that episodic mass ejection has already begun even in this very early phase of protostellar formation. The masses of the identified cores are comparable to the expected maximum stellar mass that this IRDC could form (8–19 M ⊙). We explore two possibilities on how IRDC G023.477+0.114 could eventually form high-mass stars in the context of theoretical scenarios.

Identification of pre-stellar cores in high-mass star forming clumps via H2D+ observations with ALMA

Context. The different theoretical models concerning the formation of high-mass stars make distinct predictions regarding their progenitors, which are the high-mass pre-stellar cores. However, no conclusive observation of such objects has been made to date. Aims. We aim to study the very early stages of high-mass star formation in two infrared-dark massive clumps. Our goal is to identify the core population that they harbour and to investigate their physical and chemical properties at high spatial resolution. Methods. We obtained Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 6 observations of continuum emission at 0.8 mm and of the ortho-H2D+ transition at 372 GHz towards the two clumps. We used the SCIMES algorithm to identify substructures (i.e. cores) in the position-position-velocity space, finding 16 cores. We modelled their observed spectra using a Bayesian fitting approach in the approximation of local thermodynamic equilibrium. We derived the centroid velocity, the line width, and the molecular column density maps. We also studied the correlation between the continuum and molecular data, which in general do not present the same structure. Results. We report, for the first time, the detection of ortho-H2D+ in high-mass star-forming regions performed with an interferometer. The molecular emission shows narrow and subsonic lines, suggesting that locally, the temperature of the gas is below 10 K. From the continuum emission, we estimated the cores’ total masses and compare them with the respective virial masses. We also computed the volume density values, which are found to be higher than 106 cm−3. Conclusions. Our data confirm that ortho-H2D+ is an ideal tracer of cold and dense gas. Interestingly, almost all the H2D+-identified cores are less massive than ≈13 M⊙, with the exception of one core in AG354, which could be as massive as 39 M⊙ under the assumption of low dust temperature (5 K). Furthermore, most of them are sub-virial and larger than their Jeans masses. These results are hence difficult to explain in the context of the turbulent accretion models, which predict massive and virialised pre-stellar cores. However, we cannot exclude that the cores are still in the process of accreting mass and that magnetic fields are providing enough support for the virialisation. ALMA could also be seeing only the innermost parts of the cores, and hence the cores’ total masses could be higher than inferred in this work. Furthermore, we note that the total masses of the investigated clumps are below the average for typical high-mass clumps, and thus studies of more massive sources are needed.

ATOMS: ALMA three-millimeter observations of massive star-forming regions – III. Catalogues of candidate hot molecular cores and hyper/ultra compact H ii regions

ABSTRACT We have identified 453 compact dense cores in 3 mm continuum emission maps in the ALMA Three-millimetre Observations of Massive Star-forming regions survey, and compiled three catalogues of high-mass star-forming cores. One catalogue, referred to as hyper/ultra compact (H/UC)-H ii catalogue, includes 89 cores that enshroud H/UC H ii regions as characterized by associated compact H40α emission. A second catalogue, referred to as pure s-cHMC, includes 32 candidate hot molecular cores (HMCs) showing rich spectra (N ≥ 20 lines) of complex organic molecules (COMs) and not associated with H/UC-H ii regions. The third catalogue, referred to as pure w-cHMC, includes 58 candidate HMCs with relatively low levels of COM richness and not associated with H/UC-H ii regions. These three catalogues of dense cores provide an important foundation for future studies of the early stages of high-mass star formation across the Milky Way. We also find that nearly half of H/UC-H ii cores are candidate HMCs. From the number counts of COM-containing and H/UC-H ii cores, we suggest that the duration of high-mass protostellar cores showing chemically rich features is at least comparable to the lifetime of H/UC-H ii regions. For cores in the H/UC-H ii catalogue, the width of the H40α line increases as the core size decreases, suggesting that the non-thermal dynamical and/or pressure line-broadening mechanisms dominate on the smaller scales of the H/UC-H ii cores.

Fragmentation and kinematics in high-mass star formation

Context. The formation of high-mass star-forming regions from their parental gas cloud and the subsequent fragmentation processes lie at the heart of star formation research. Aims. We aim to study the dynamical and fragmentation properties at very early evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Methods. Employing the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array and the IRAM 30 m telescope, we observed two young high-mass star-forming regions, ISOSS22478 and ISOSS23053, in the 1.3 mm continuum and spectral line emission at a high angular resolution (~0.8″). Results. We resolved 29 cores that are mostly located along filament-like structures. Depending on the temperature assumption, these cores follow a mass-size relation of approximately M ∝ r2.0 ± 0.3, corresponding to constant mean column densities. However, with different temperature assumptions, a steeper mass-size relation up to M ∝ r3.0 ± 0.2, which would be more likely to correspond to constant mean volume densities, cannot be ruled out. The correlation of the core masses with their nearest neighbor separations is consistent with thermal Jeans fragmentation. We found hardly any core separations at the spatial resolution limit, indicating that the data resolve the large-scale fragmentation well. Although the kinematics of the two regions appear very different at first sight – multiple velocity components along filaments in ISOSS22478 versus a steep velocity gradient of more than 50 km s−1 pc−1 in ISOSS23053 – the findings can all be explained within the framework of a dynamical cloud collapse scenario. Conclusions. While our data are consistent with a dynamical cloud collapse scenario and subsequent thermal Jeans fragmentation, the importance of additional environmental properties, such as the magnetization of the gas or external shocks triggering converging gas flows, is nonetheless not as well constrained and would require future investigation.

FUGIN hot core survey. I. Survey method and initial results for l = 10°–20°

Abstract We have developed a method to make a spectral-line-based survey of hot cores, which represent an important stage of high-mass star formation, and applied the method to the data of the FUGIN (FOREST Unbiased Galactic plane Imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope) survey. First, we select hot core candidates by searching the FUGIN data for the weak hot core tracer lines (HNCO and CH3CN) by stacking, and then we conduct follow-up pointed observations on these candidates in C34S, SO, OCS, HC3N, HNCO, CH3CN, and CH3OH J = 2–1 and J = 8–7 lines to confirm and characterize them. We applied this method to the l = 10°–20° portion of the FUGIN data and identified 22 “HotCores” (compact sources with more than two significant detections of the hot core tracer lines, i.e., SO, OCS, HC3N, HNCO, CH3CN, or CH3OH J = 8–7 lines) and 14 “DenseClumps” (sources with more than two significant detection of C34S, CH3OH J = 2–1, or the hot core tracer lines). The identified HotCores are found to be associated with signposts of high-mass star formation such as ATLASGAL clumps, WISE H ii regions, and Class II methanol masers. Many of the FUGIN HotCores are identified with the Herschel Hi-GAL clumps with a median mass of 6.8 × 102 M⊙ and a median bolometric luminosity of 7.4 × 103 L⊙. Five of the seven HotCores with stronger CH3CN lines exhibit elevated gas temperatures of 50–100 K. These observations suggest that FUGIN HotCores are closely related to the formation of stars with medium to high mass. For those associated with ATLASGAL clumps, their bolometric luminosity to clump mass ratios are consistent with the star formation stages centered at the hot core phase. The catalog of FUGIN HotCores provides a useful starting point for further statistical studies and detailed observations of high-mass star forming regions.

The ALMA Survey of 70 μm Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). II. Molecular Outflows in the Extreme Early Stages of Protocluster Formation

Abstract We present a study of outflows at extremely early stages of high-mass star formation obtained from the ALMA Survey of 70 μm dark High-mass clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). Twelve massive 3.6−70 μm dark prestellar clump candidates were observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 6. Forty-three outflows are identified toward 41 out of 301 dense cores using the CO and SiO emission lines, yielding a detection rate of 14%. We discover six episodic molecular outflows associated with low- to high-mass cores, indicating that episodic outflows (and therefore episodic accretion) begin at extremely early stages of protostellar evolution for a range of core masses. The time span between consecutive ejection events is much smaller than those found in more evolved stages, which indicates that the ejection episodicity timescale is likely not constant over time. The estimated outflow dynamical timescale appears to increase with core masses, which likely indicates that more massive cores have longer accretion timescales than less massive cores. The lower accretion rates in these 70 μm dark objects compared to the more evolved protostars indicate that the accretion rates increase with time. The total outflow energy rate is smaller than the turbulent energy dissipation rate, which suggests that outflow-induced turbulence cannot sustain the internal clump turbulence at the current epoch. We often detect thermal SiO emission within these 70 μm dark clumps that is unrelated to CO outflows. This SiO emission could be produced by collisions, intersection flows, undetected protostars, or other motions.

44 GHz Methanol Masers: Observations toward 95 GHz Methanol Masers

We report a simultaneous 44 and 95 GHz class I methanol maser survey toward 144 sources from the 95 GHz class I methanol maser catalog. The observations were made with the three telescopes of the Korean very long baseline interferometry network operating in single-dish mode. The detection rates are 89% at 44 GHz and 77% at 95 GHz. There are 106 new discoveries at 44 GHz. Comparing the previous 95 GHz detections with new observations of the same transitions made using the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m radio telescope shows no clear evidence of variability on a timescale of six years. Emission from the 44 and 95 GHz transitions shows strong correlations in peak velocity, peak flux density, and integrated flux density, indicating that they are likely cospatial. We found that the peak flux density ratio Spk,95/Spk,44 decreases as the 44 GHz peak flux density increases. We found that some class I methanol masers in our sample could be associated with infrared dark clouds, while others are associated with H II regions, indicating that some sources occur at an early stage of high-mass star formation, while others are located toward more evolved sources.

H II regions and high-mass starless clump candidates

Context. The role of ionization feedback on high-mass (&gt;8 M⊙) star formation is still highly debated. Questions remain concerning the presence of nearby H II regions changes the properties of early high-mass star formation and whether H II regions promote or inhibit the formation of high-mass stars. Aims. To characterize the role of H II regions on the formation of high-mass stars, we study the properties of a sample of candidates high-mass starless clumps (HMSCs), of which about 90% have masses larger than 100 M⊙. These high-mass objects probably represent the earliest stages of high-mass star formation; we search if (and how) their properties are modified by the presence of an H II region. Methods. We took advantage of the recently published catalog of HMSC candidates. By cross matching the HMSCs and H II regions, we classified HMSCs into three categories: (1) the HMSCs associated with H II regions both in the position in the projected plane of the sky and in velocity; (2) HMSCs associated in the plane of the sky, but not in velocity; and (3) HMSCs far away from any H II regions in the projected sky plane. We carried out comparisons between associated and nonassociated HMSCs based on statistical analyses of multiwavelength data from infrared to radio. Results. We show that there are systematic differences of the properties of HMSCs in different environments. Statistical analyses suggest that HMSCs associated with H II regions are warmer, more luminous, more centrally-peaked and turbulent. We also clearly show, for the first time, that the ratio of bolometric luminosity to envelope mass of HMSCs (L∕M) could not be a reliable evolutionary probe for early massive star formation due to the external heating effects of the H II regions. Conclusions. We show HMSCs associated with H II regions present statistically significant differences from HMSCs far away from H II regions, especially for dust temperature and L∕M. More centrally peaked and turbulent properties of HMSCs associated with H II regions may promote the formation of high-mass stars by limiting fragmentation. High-resolution interferometric surveys toward HMSCs are crucial to reveal how H II regions impact the star formation process inside HMSCs.

An ALMA View of Molecular Filaments in the Large Magellanic Cloud. II. An Early Stage of High-mass Star Formation Embedded at Colliding Clouds in N159W-South

Abstract We have conducted ALMA CO isotopes and 1.3 mm continuum observations toward filamentary molecular clouds of the N159W-South region in the Large Magellanic Cloud with an angular resolution of ∼0.″25 (∼0.07 pc). Although the previous lower-resolution (∼1″) ALMA observations revealed that there is a high-mass protostellar object at an intersection of two line-shaped filaments in 13CO with the length scale of ∼10 pc, the spatially resolved observations, in particular, toward the highest column density part traced by the 1.3 mm continuum emission, the N159W-South clump, show complicated hub-filamentary structures. We also discovered that there are multiple protostellar sources with bipolar outflows along the massive filament. The redshifted/blueshifted components of the 13CO emission around the massive filaments/protostars have complementary distributions, which is considered to be possible evidence for a cloud–cloud collision. We propose a new scenario in which the supersonically colliding gas flow triggers the formation of both the massive filament and protostars. This is a modification of the earlier scenario of cloud–cloud collision, by Fukui et al., that postulated the two filamentary clouds occur prior to the high-mass star formation. A recent theoretical study of the shock compression in colliding molecular flows by Inoue et al. demonstrates that the formation of filaments with hub structure is a usual outcome of the collision, lending support for the present scenario. The theory argues that the filaments are formed as dense parts in a shock compressed sheet-like layer, which resembles “an umbrella with pokes.”

Weak and Compact Radio Emission in Early High-mass Star-forming Regions. II. The Nature of the Radio Sources

Abstract In this study we analyze 70 radio continuum sources that are associated with dust clumps and which are considered to be candidates for the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. The detection of these sources was reported by Rosero et al., who found most of them to show weak ( mJy) and compact ( 0.″6) radio emission. Herein, we used the observed parameters of these sources to investigate the origin of the radio continuum emission. We found that at least ∼30% of these radio detections are most likely to be ionized jets associated with high-mass protostars. However, for the most compact sources, we cannot discard the scenario that they represent pressure-confined H ii regions. This result is highly relevant for recent theoretical models that are based on core accretion, which predict the first stages of ionization from high-mass stars to be in the form of jets. Additionally, we found that properties such as the radio luminosity as a function of the bolometric luminosity of ionized jets from low and high-mass stars are extremely well-correlated. Our data improve upon previous studies by providing further evidence of a common origin for jets independently of luminosity.

ALMA observations of RCW 120 Fragmentation at 0.01 pc scale

Context. Little is known about how high-mass stars form. Around 30% of the young high-mass stars in the Galaxy are observed at the edges of ionized (H II) regions. Therefore these are places of choice to study the earliest stages of high-mass star formation, especially toward the most massive condensations. High spatial resolution observations in the millimeter range might reveal how these stars form and how they assemble their mass. Aims. We want to study the fragmentation process down to the 0.01 pc scale in the most massive condensation (1700 M⊙) observed at the southwestern edge of the H ii region RCW 120 where the most massive Herschel cores (~124 M⊙ in average) could form high-mass stars. Methods. Using ALMA 3 mm continuum observations toward the densest and most massive millimetric condensation (Condensation 1) of RCW 120, we used the getimages and getsources algorithms to extract the sources detected with ALMA and obtained their physical parameters. The fragmentation of the Herschel cores is discussed through their Jeans mass to understand the properties of these future stars. Results. We extracted 18 fragments from the ALMA continuum observation at 3 mm toward eight cores detected with Herschel, whose mass and deconvolved size range from 2 M⊙ to 32 M⊙ and from 1.6 mpc to 28.8 mpc, respectively. The low degree of fragmen- tation observed regarding thermal Jeans fragmentation suggests that the observed fragmentation is inconsistent with ideal gravitational fragmentation and other ingredients such as turbulence or magnetic fields should be added to explain this inconsistency. Finally, the range of the mass of the fragments indicates that the densest condensation of RCW 120 is a favorable place for the formation of high-mass stars with the presence of a probable UCH ii region associated with the 27 M⊙ Fragment 1 of Core 2.
