Spawning fish maintains trophic synchrony across time and space beyond thermal drivers.

Increasing ocean temperature will speed up physiological rates of ectotherms. In fish, this is suggested to cause earlier spawning due to faster oocyte growth rates. Over time, this could cause spawning time to become decoupled from the timing of offspring food resources, a phenomenon referred to as trophic asynchrony. We used biological data, including body length, age, and gonad developmental stages collected from >125,000 individual Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) sampled between 59 and 73° N in 1980-2019. Combined with experimental data on oocyte growth rates, our analyses show that cod spawned progressively earlier by about a week per decade, partly due to ocean warming. It also appears that spawning time varied by more than 40 days, depending on year and spawning location. The significant plasticity in spawning time seems to be fine-tuned to the local phytoplankton spring bloom phenology. This ability to partly overcome thermal drivers and thus modulate spawning time could allow individuals to maximize fitness by closely tracking local environmental conditions important for offspring survival. Our finding highlights a new dimension for trophic match-mismatch and should be an important consideration in models used to predict phenology dynamics in a warmer climate.

A Na+ channel receptor of FMRFamide in the cephalopod Sepiella japonica: Identification, characterisation, and expression profiling during different stages of gonadal development

FMRFamide, a member of the neuropeptide family, is involved in numerous physiological processes. FMRFamide-activated sodium channels (FaNaCs) are a family of non-voltage-gated, amiloride-sensitive, Na+-selective channels triggered by the neuropeptide FMRFamide. In the present study, the full-length cDNA of the FaNaC receptor of Sepiella japonica (SjFaNaC) was cloned. The cDNA of SjFaNaC was 3004 bp long with an open reading frame (ORF) of 1812 bp, encoding 603 amino acid residues with no signal peptide at the N-terminus. Sequence analysis indicated that SjFaNaC shared a high identity with other cephalopods FaNaCs and formed a sister clade with bivalves. The protein structure was predicted using SWISS-MODEL with AcFaNaC as the template. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed that SjFaNaC transcripts were highly expressed in both female and male reproductive organs, as well as in the optic lobe and brain of the central nervous system (CNS). Results of in situ hybridisation (ISH) showed that SjFaNaC mRNA was mainly distributed in the medulla and deep retina of the optic lobe and in both the supraesophageal and subesophageal masses of the brain. Subcellular localisation indicated that the SjFaNaC protein was localised intracellularly and on the cell surface of HEK293T cells. In summary, these findings may lay the foundation for future exploration of the functions of SjFaNaC in cephalopods.

Identification, Expression and Evolutional Analysis of Two cyp19-like Genes in Amphioxus.

The mechanism of sex determination and differentiation in animals remains a central focus of reproductive and developmental biology research, and the regulation of sex differentiation in amphioxus remains poorly understood. Cytochrome P450 Family 19 Subfamily A member 1 (CYP19A1) is a crucial sex differentiation gene that catalyzes the conversion of androgens into estrogens. In this study, we identified two aromatase-like genes in amphioxus: cyp19-like1 and cyp19-like2. The cyp19-like1 is more primitive and may represent the ancestral form of cyp19 in zebrafish and other vertebrates, while the cyp19-like2 is likely the result of gene duplication within amphioxus. To gain further insights into the expression level of these two aromatase-like, we examined their expression in different tissues and during different stages of gonad development. While the expression level of the two genes differs in tissues, both are highly expressed in the gonad primordium and are primarily localized to microsomal membrane systems. However, as development proceeds, their expression level decreases significantly. This study enhances our understanding of sex differentiation mechanisms in amphioxus and provides valuable insights into the formation and evolution of sex determination mechanisms in vertebrates.

Reproductive Biology and Spawning Pattern of Oyster Magallana bilineata in Mengkabong Bay, Sabah, Malaysia

Abstract Magallana bilineata is a commercially important oyster species in Malaysia. Despite its economic significance, the biology and ecology of this species, particularly its reproductive cycle, are poorly understood in the region. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the reproductive cycle of M. bilineata in Mengkabong Bay, Tuaran, Sabah and its correlation with environmental factors. A total of 105 oyster specimens were collected and examined to determine the sex ratio, gonad developmental stages, maturity index (MI), and condition index (CI). The results revealed a sex ratio of 1:2.36 (♂:♀) in the oyster population of the bay, with a significantly higher proportion of females (P < 0.05). Hermaphroditism was detected in 1.90% of the samples. M. bilineata was found to spawn throughout most months in the bay, with the highest MI and CI values recorded in November 2019 when most oysters were in mature or maturing stages. Salinity was found to be the primary factor influencing male gonad maturation, while temperature was the primary factor influencing female gonad maturation. Understanding the reproductive biology of this species is crucial for predicting its future survival and facilitating assisted spawning and hatchery spat production, thereby ensuring the conservation and sustainability of the oyster fishery in Malaysia.

Do catadromous thinlip grey mullet benefit from shifting to freshwater? A perspective from fatty acid signature analysis.

To investigate the potential benefits of the catadromous thinlip grey mullet (Chelon ramada Risso, 1827) migration to freshwater, the total lipid content and fatty acid (FA) profile of female's muscle and gonads caught in both the estuary and river were analyzed. The freshwater contingent presented a higher body condition, greater muscle gross energy, and larger gonads with higher lipid reserves. These animals showed a muscle profile rich in C16:1n-7 and lower LC-PUFA that contrast with the higher relative amount of C18:1n-9, n-3 FA, and unsaturated LC-PUFA, such as C18 and C20 FA found in the estuarine contingent. The gonads of both contingents showed a constant and high relative amount of polyunsaturated FAs (PUFA, 37%). However, in terms of essential fatty acids (EFAs), the estuarine contingent had a higher relative amount of C18:2n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3, and C22:6n-3. On the other hand, the freshwater contingent showed a higher relative amount of n-3 FA precursors, namely C18:3n-3, and a still low relative amount of C22:6n-3. This suggests a mismatch between the metabolic omega-3 pathway and the physiological maturity stages, similar to a phenomenon of dormancy. In this sense, not all these individuals may reproduce annually, and the later stages of gonad development will require supplementary energy derived from feeding at the estuary. Thus, freshwater migration may promote a reproductive strategy enabling adults to take advantage of the warm and food-rich summer/autumn period, adjust spawning and juvenile appearance, and reduce the population's exposure to habitat changes and/or stochastic events.

Morphochromatic spectrum through gonad development stages of the razor surgeonfish, Prionurus laticlavius (Valenciennes, 1846) (Actinopterygii: Acanthuriformes).

Gonad development stages (GDS) are a critical tool that can be easily applied in fisheries to visually discriminate mature from immature organisms and assess their reproductive condition. This study proposes a morphochromatic scale to define gonad development stages for razor surgeonfish (Prionurus laticlavius) based on morphological and structural assessments of the gonad, histologically validated using multivariate dummy matrices modeled through multiple linear regression analyses. Gonads of 271 specimens were photographed prior to preservation to describe their shape, size, color, and turgor for morphochromatic analysis. Later, gonads were processed using standard histological methods. An oocyte growth scale was designed based on oocyte diameter and follicular wall thickness for each stage. In addition, five morphochromatic gonad development stages were histologically validated: immature, developing, spawning capable, regressing, and regenerating. Morphochromatic variations were observed in the last three stages in both sexes. Results show that gonad morphology and structure of P. laticlavius are similar to those of other acanthurids, albeit with some asymmetric and morphological differences, as well as gonad morphochromatic in both sexes. These findings confirm that maturation is species-specific. Also, although not a critical character, gonad colouration was found to play a major role in distinguishing between gonad development stages along with shape, size, vascularity (females), and folds (males). Therefore, gonad colouration should not be entirely overlooked because doing so may lead to errors in determining sexual maturity stages.

Molecular Characterization, Expression Pattern, DNA Methylation and Gene Disruption of Figla in Blotched Snakehead (Channa maculata)

Figla is one of the earliest expressed genes in the oocyte during ovarian development. In this study, Figla was characterized in C. maculata, one of the main aquaculture species in China, and designated as CmFigla. The length of CmFigla cDNA was 1303 bp, encoding 197 amino acids that contained a conserved bHLH domain. CmFigla revealed a female-biased expression patterns in the gonads of adult fish, and CmFigla expression was far higher in ovaries than that in testes at all gonadal development stages, especially at 60~180 days post-fertilization (dpf). Furthermore, a noteworthy inverse relationship was observed between CmFigla expression and the methylation of its promoter in the adult gonads. Gonads at 90 dpf were used for in situ hybridization (ISH), and CmFigla transcripts were mainly concentrated in oogonia and the primary oocytes in ovaries, but undetectable in the testes. These results indicated that Figla would play vital roles in the ovarian development in C. maculata. Additionally, the frame-shift mutations of CmFigla were successfully constructed through the CRISPR/Cas9 system, which established a positive foundation for further investigation on the role of Figla in the ovarian development of C. maculata. Our study provides valuable clues for exploring the regulatory mechanism of Figla in the fish ovarian development and maintenance, which would be useful for the sex control and reproduction of fish in aquaculture.

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Reveals the Role of Ribosome Reduction in Impeding Oogenesis in Female Triploid Crassostrea Gigas.

The fecundity of triploid female Crassostrea gigas exhibited significant variation and was lower compared to diploid individuals. Previous studies categorized mature stage triploid female C. gigas into two groups: female α, characterized by a high number of oocytes, and female β, displaying few or no oocytes. To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying irregular oogenesis and fecundity differences in triploid C. gigas, we performed a comparative analysis of gonad transcriptomes at different stages of gonadal development, including female α, female β, and diploids. During early oogenesis, functional enrichment analysis between female diploids and putative female β triploids revealed differently expressed genes (DEGs) in the ribosome and ribosome biogenesis pathways. Expression levels of DEGs in these pathways were significantly decreased in the putative female β triploid, suggesting a potential role of reduced ribosome levels in obstructing triploid oogenesis. Moreover, to identify regulatory pathways in gonad development, female oysters at the early and mature stages were compared. The DNA repair and recombination proteins pathways were enriched in female diploids and female α triploids but absent in female β triploids. Overall, we propose that decreased ribosome biogenesis in female triploids hinders the differentiation of germ stem cells, leading to the formation of a large number of abnormal germ cells and ultimately resulting in reduced fecundity. The variation in fertility among triploids appeared to be related to the degree of DNA damage repair during female gonad development. This study offers valuable insights into the oogenesis process in female triploid C. gigas.

Hermaphroditism and the impact of environmental variables on atresia prevalence in the pen shell Pinna rugosa

The pen shell fishery in northwest Mexico is based on reproductive quota, but the reproductive biology of Pinna rugosa, an economically valuable species, has not yet been documented in its main fishery area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive cycle of P. rugosa, determine the prevalence of atresia and hermaphroditism, and estimate the effect of environmental variables on its reproduction during 2015. Atresia is part of the reproductive cycle in which the cells undergo degeneration. It generally occurs after spawning to reabsorb compounds but it can also occur from the early stages of gametogenesis, affecting fertilization and recruitment. Gonad samples and environmental parameters were collected monthly from a commercial bank at Laguna Ojo de Liebre (Baja California Sur, Mexico) from January to December 2015. Shell height, sex, gonadal development stages, and atresia prevalence were recorded. The results showed that 14% of the individuals were females, 19% were males, and 67% were hermaphrodites, with 3 forms of functional hermaphroditism. Gonadal inactivity occurred in January, February, November, and December, coinciding with lower temperatures and higher chlorophyll a concentrations. Most individuals spawned in June and July. Calculation of a monthly gonad index revealed that gonad development was positively related to environmental variables (R2 = 0.54). Atresia was observed from March to October and was positively related to environmental conditions (R2 = 0.81). The high prevalence of atresia during periods of high temperature and food scarcity suggests that these environmental parameters can affect the reproductive activity of P. rugosa, and have recruitment and fishery productivity implications.

Evolution and gene expression of matrix metalloproteinase gene family during gonadal development in Scatophagus argus.

During the reproductive cycle of Scatophagus argus (S. argus), their gonads undergo degeneration and re-maturation including the degradation of proteins in the extracellular matrix (ECM). Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a family of zinc proteases, play a crucial role in ECM degradation. Our aim was to identify the MMP gene family of S. argus and determine their gene expression levels across various stages of gonadal development. The MMP gene family of S. argus in the genome was identified by using basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) and HMMER. Phylogenetic tree and synteny analysis were performed to investigate the evolutionary past of the MMP gene family. The gonads of 18 S. argus (9 males and 9 females) were dissected and a quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was conducted to investigate the expression levels of MMP genes across different stages of gonadal development. Twenty-three MMP family genes were identified in the genome of S. argus. We divided the MMP gene family into 4 categories and found that teleosts exhibit a higher MMP gene copy number relative to other vertebrates. By sampling S. argus at different stages of gonadal development, we observed an upregulation in relative expression levels of 11 MMP genes in the testis or ovary. Ten MMP genes (mmp2, 9, 14a, 15a, 15b, 16a, 17a, 23b and 24) showed higher mRNA expression in the testis compared to the ovary and mmp28 had higher expression during ovarian development. The tissue distribution results demonstrated that the gills exhibited the lowest relative expression level among all tissues examined. However, 6 genes (mmp2, 9, 14a, 15a, 15b, and 16a) had relatively high expression in all tissues. The result suggested that teleost-special whole genome duplication was mainly responsible for the formation of the MMP gene family in teleosts. Expression patterns of MMP genes indicated that mmp2, 9, 14a, 15a, 15b, 16a, 17a, 23b and 24 played a vital role in testicular development while mmp28 was more important for ovarian development. Limitaion: Further studies are needed to determine their protein expressions in gonadal development and precise mechanism in gonadal differentiation. The study enhances our understanding of the MMP gene family in evolution of teleost and provides valuable insights for further research on MMPs in S. argus.

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of Dmrt gene family and their role in gonad development of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas).

Doublesex and Mab-3-related transcription factor (Dmrt) is a type of transcription factor with a zinc-finger DM structural domain, which plays a significant role in sex determination and differentiation in animals. Although Dmrt has been reported in many vertebrates and invertebrates, it has rarely been studied in bivalves. In this study, a total of three members of the Dmrt gene family were identified and characterized in Crassostrea gigas, and all these CgDmrt genes contained a conserved DM domain. Analysis of the phylogenetic tree and gene structure revealed that Dmrt genes clustered on one branch may have similar functions in bivalves. Expression profiling of CgDmrt mRNA in different tissues and stages of gonad development indicated that CgDmrt3 exhibited sexually dimorphic expression and played an important role in the development of the male gonad in C. gigas. Furthermore, analysis of CgDmrt mRNA expression between fertile triploids and sterile triploids showed that CgDmrt3 may be involved in sperm production. Collectively, the systematic analysis of the CgDmrt genes will provide potential insights into the function of these genes in gonadal development.

The Neuropeptide HGAP Regulates Growth, Reproduction, Metamorphosis, Tissue Damage Repair, and Response against Starvation in Pacific Abalone

Introduction: Neuropeptides regulate vital physiological processes in multicellular organisms, including growth, reproduction, metamorphosis, and feeding. Recent transcriptome analyses have revealed neuropeptide genes with potential roles in vertebrate and invertebrate growth and reproduction. Among these genes, haliotid growth-associated peptide (HGAP) was identified as a novel gene in abalone. Methods: This study focused on HGAP in Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai), where the complete cDNA sequence named Hdh-HGAP was identified and characterized. Samples from different experiments, such as metamorphosis, juvenile abalone growth, gonad development stages, muscle remodeling, and starvation, were collected for mRNA expression analysis. Results: The sequence spans 552 bp, encoding 96 amino acids with a molecular weight of 10.96 kDa. Expression analysis revealed that Hdh-HGAP exhibited higher levels in muscle tissue. Notably, during metamorphosis, Hdh-HGAP exhibited greater expression in the trochophore, veliger, and juvenile stages than in the cell division stages. Regarding growth patterns, Hdh-HGAP was highly expressed during rapid growth compared to stunted, minimal, and normal growth. In gonadal development, Hdh-HGAP mRNA reached its highest expression level during the ripening stage, indicating a potential role in gonadal cell proliferation and maturation. The in vivo effects of GnRH on gonad development and the expression of the Hdh-HGAP neuropeptide indicate its involvement in regulating reproduction in Pacific abalone. While tissue remodeling is primarily governed by immune genes, Hdh-HGAP was also upregulated during muscle tissue remodeling. Conversely, Hdh-HGAP was downregulated during prolonged starvation. Conclusion: This study marks the first comprehensive exploration of the Hdh-HGAP neuropeptide gene in Pacific abalone, shedding light on its involvement in growth, reproduction, metamorphosis, tissue remodeling, and response to starvation, although regulatory mechanisms are mostly unknown.

Patterns of admixture and introgression in a mosaic Mytilus galloprovincialis and Mytilus edulis hybrid zone in SW England.

The study of hybrid zones offers important insights into speciation. Earlier studies on hybrid populations of the marine mussel species Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis in SW England provided evidence of admixture but were constrained by the limited number of molecular markers available. We use 57 ancestry-informative SNPs, most of which have been mapped genetically, to provide evidence of distinctive differences between admixed populations in SW England and asymmetrical introgression from M. edulis to M. galloprovincialis. We combine the genetic study with analysis of phenotypic traits of potential ecological and adaptive significance. We demonstrate that hybrid individuals have brown mantle edges unlike the white or purple in the parental species, suggesting allelic or non-allelic genomic interactions. We report differences in gonad development stage between the species consistent with a prezygotic barrier between the species. By incorporating results from publications dating back to 1980, we confirm the long-term stability of the hybrid zone despite higher viability of M. galloprovincialis. This stability coincides with a dramatic change in temperature of UK coastal waters and suggests that these hybrid populations might be resisting the effects of global warming. However, a single SNP locus associated with the Notch transmembrane signalling protein shows a markedly different pattern of variation to the others and might be associated with adaptation of M. galloprovincialis to colder northern temperatures.

Size-dependent thermal limits in Australian hybrid abalone: implications for productivity shifts with ocean warming

Ocean warming and extreme heatwaves threaten marine species supporting commercial fisheries and aquaculture. Predicting the responses of these industries to chronic and acute warming depends on understanding which life stages are most vulnerable, the potential for stocks to adapt to changing thermal environments, and the availability of thermally adapted genotypes to help enhance stock resilience through strategic interventions. Here, we shed light on some of these knowledge gaps by quantifying the critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of ~ 10–210 g hybrid abalone (Haliotis rubra × H. laevigata) from two farms representing contrasting thermal environments from south-eastern Australia. CTmax was not dependent on body size or provenance (farm) when heating rates were rapid (1 °C per h), but a significant relationship between CTmax and body size was observed when heating rates were slower and more ecologically realistic (1 °C per 12 h). Histological analyses revealed a negative relationship between CTmax and the stage of gonadal development when abalone were exposed to chronic thermal stress conditions. These results suggest that marine heatwaves and ongoing ocean warming might favour smaller, less fecund animals in natural and farm settings. This could potentially impact future harvestable biomass, recruitment and population dynamics in wild-capture fisheries, and production of larger, high-value animals in farm settings. This study adds to a growing body of literature pointing to complex and often negative effects of climate change on commercial fisheries, and the potential need for interventions aimed at bolstering fisheries resilience against the effects of ocean warming.

Morphological and transcriptional analysis of sexual differentiation and gonadal development in a burrowing fish, the four-eyed sleeper (Bostrychus sinensis)

Four-eyed sleeper (Bostrychus sinensis) is a commercially important sea water fish, and the male individuals exhibit significant advantages in somatic growth and stress resistance, so developing sex control strategy to create all-male progeny will produce higher economic value. However, little is known about the genetic background associated with sex differentiation in this species. In this study, we investigated gonadal development and uncovered critical window stages of sexual differentiation (about 2 mph), transition from proliferation to differentiation in female germ stem cells (GSCs) (2–3 mph) and male GSCs (3–4 mph). De novo transcriptome analysis revealed candidate genes and signaling pathways associated with sexual differentiation and gonadal development in four-eyed sleeper. The results showed that sox9 and zglp1 were the earliest sex-biased transcription factors during sex differentiation. Down-regulation of chemokine, cytokines-cytokine receptors and up-regulation of cellular senescence pathway might be involved in GSC differentiation. Weighted gene correlation network analysis showed that metabolic pathway and occludin were the hub signaling and gene in ovarian development, meanwhile the MAPK signaling pathways, cellular senescence pathway and ash1l (histone H3-lysine4 N-trimethyltransferase) were the hub pathways and gene in testicular development. The present work elucidated the developmental processes of sexual differentiation and gonadal development and revealed their associated revealed genes and signaling pathways in four-eyed sleeper, providing theoretical basis for developing sex-control techniques.

The reproductive potential of Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) farmed in sea cages in South Korea

AbstractIdentifying environmental effects on the reproduction cycle and sex hormones is essential for ensuring the sustainable productivity of Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT, Thunnus orientalis) aquaculture. In the present study, 70 PBTs, commercially farmed in sea cages near Yokjido Island, South Korea, were investigated from April 2020 to March 2021. Environmental data, including water temperature and photoperiod duration, were collected. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was calculated, and male and female maturity stages were classified monthly in proportions based on histological analysis of the gonads. Male and female gonadal developmental stages were classified into four major stages. Mature male and female PBTs were observed from May to August and June to August, respectively. Monthly changes in sex steroid hormone levels in PBT plasma were evaluated. The GSI and sex steroid hormones of males and females increased in May, peaked in June, and decreased thereafter. Our results confirmed the reproductive potential of farmed PBT and verified that reproductive maturity is reached in July. This study, to the best of our knowledge, is the first to investigate the reproductive biology of PBT in South Korea, and our results constitute a reference for future research on PBT aquaculture.

Genome-wide identification, evolution and expression of TGF-β signaling pathway members in mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi)

Members of the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signaling pathway regulate diverse cellular biological processes in embryonic and tissue development. We took mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) as the research object to identify all members of the TGF-β signaling pathway, measure their expression pattern in the key period post hatching, and further explore their possible role in the process of sex regulation. Herein, we identified eighty-three TGF-β signaling pathway members and located them on chromosomes based on the genome of mandarin fish. TGF-β signaling pathway members were highly conserved since each TGF-β subfamily clustered with orthologs from other species. Transcriptome analysis, qRT–PCR and in situ hybridization demonstrated that most mandarin fish TGF-β signaling pathway members presented stage-specific and/or sex-dimorphic expression during gonadal development, and different members of the TGF-β signaling pathway participated in different stages of gonadal development. Taken together, our results provide new insight into the role of TGF-β signaling pathway members in the sex regulation of mandarin fish.

Sex Differences in Fatty Acid Composition of Chinese Tongue Sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) Tissues

The fatty acid accumulation in fish tissues are closely related to fish sex, yet the sex differences in fish fatty acids have not been fully known. This experiment investigated the sex differences in fatty acid composition of Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), which have typical sexual dimorphism and reversal. Three sexes, namely females, males and pseudomales, were involved in this study. Five batches of fish samples were collected from different fish farms in Shandong Province, China. These fish were identified to be at the gonadal development stage of III–IV. The disparity of fatty acid between sexes (female vs male and pseudomale vs. male) was evaluated by the distance coefficient (Dsex) and multi-variate similarity of percentages analysis (SIMPER). The highest Dsex values between females and males were found in gonad, followed by liver and eye. The fatty acids that differed between females and males were mainly DHA, 16:1n-7, 18:1n-9, and 18:0. The sex difference in DHA and 18:1n-9 contributed significantly to the overall sex difference in fatty acid of brain, eye, and gonad, whereas that in 16:1n-7 contributed significantly in heart, gill, liver, and muscle. The sex difference in 18:0 contributed significantly to the overall sex difference in fatty acid of heart, gill, gut, and skin. The sex differences in fatty acid between pseudomales and males were generally insignificant. In conclusion, at this gonadal development stage (III–IV), the sex differences in fatty acid between female and male Chinese tongue sole have emerged, mainly in the gonad. The testes had higher DHA levels but lower levels of 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9 than ovaries. In addition, for pseudomales, the phenotypic sex more substantially determined the fatty acid composition than the genetic sex.

Testosterone concentration and aromatisation efficiency at different stages of gonad development: a case study with Mytilus edulis trossulus

ABSTRACT Sex steroid hormones occur in the bivalve tissues. Testosterone (T), various oestrogens, and progesterone have been reported in this group of organisms and the amounts of these hormones have been correlated with seasonal variation and reproduction. Yet, neither the role nor the origins of sex steroids are fully clarified. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that, apart from the esterification process, the aromatisation of androgens to oestrogens can help balance T levels during gonadal development in both sexes using Mytilus edulis trossulus as a model species. The highest testosterone concentrations were found in developed male and female gonads (IV reproductive stage of gametogenesis). The highest aromatisation efficiency was also found in the developed male and female gonads, but also in the gills. During the other stages of gametogenesis (II, III, V-I), a decrease in both testosterone concentration and aromatisation efficiency was observed in the gonads of males and females, as well as in the gills of males. However, the decrease in testosterone concentration did not affect the 17β-oestradiol concentration in mussel tissues. Thus, together with the esterification process, the ongoing aromatisation in bivalve tissues may help keeping balanced T levels.
