Massive pre-main-sequence stars in M17

Context. Recently much progress has been made in probing the embedded stages of massive star formation, pointing to formation scenarios that are reminiscent of a scaled-up version of low-mass star formation. However, the latest stages of massive-star formation have rarely been observed, as young massive stars are assumed to reveal their photospheres only when they are fully formed. Aims. Using first and second overtone CO bandhead emission and near- to mid-infrared photometry, we aim to characterize the remnant formation disks around five unique pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars with masses 6–12 M⊙ that have constrained stellar parameters thanks to their detectable photospheres. We seek to understand this emission and the disks from which it originates in the context of the evolutionary stage of the studied sources. Methods. We used an analytic disk model, and adopted local thermodynamical equilibrium, to fit the CO bandhead and the dust emission, assumed to originate in different disk regions. For the first time, we modeled the second overtone emission, which helped us to put tighter constraints on the density of the CO gas. Furthermore, we fit continuum normalized bandheads, using models for stellar and dust continuum, and show the importance of this in constraining the emission region. We also included 13CO in our models as an additional probe of the young nature of the studied objects. Results. We find that the CO emission originates in a narrow region close to the star (<1 AU) and under very similar disk conditions (temperatures and densities) for the different objects. This is consistent with previous modeling of this emission in a diverse range of young stellar objects and identifies CO emission as an indicator of the presence of a gaseous inner disk reaching close to the stellar surface. From constraining the location of the inner edge of the dust emission, we find that all but one of the objects have undisrupted inner dust disks. Conclusions. We discuss these results in the context of the positions of these PMS stars in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram and the CO emission’s association with an early age and high accretion rates in (massive) young stellar objects. We conclude, considering their mass range and the fact that their photospheres are detected, that the M17 PMS stars are observed in a relatively early formation stage. They are therefore excellent candidates for longer wavelength studies to further constrain the end stages of massive star formation.

AFGL 5180 and AFGL 6366S: sites of hub–filament systems at the opposite edges of a filamentary cloud

ABSTRACT We present a multiscale and multiwavelength study to unveil massive star formation (MSF) processes around sites AFGL 5180 and AFGL 6366S, both hosting a Class ii 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission. The radio continuum map at 8.46 GHz reveals a small cluster of radio sources towards AFGL 5180. Signatures of the early stages of MSF in our target sites are spatially seen at the opposite edges of a filamentary cloud (length ∼5 pc), which is observed in the submillimetre dust continuum maps. Using the near-infrared photometric data, the spatial distribution of young stellar objects is found towards the entire filament, primarily clustered at its edges. The getsf utility on the Herschel far-infrared images reveals a hub–filament system (HFS) towards each target site. The analysis of the molecular line data, which benefits from large area coverage (∼1° × 1°), detects two cloud components with a connection in both position and velocity space. This supports the scenario of a cloud–cloud collision (CCC) that occurred ∼1 Myr ago. The filamentary cloud, connecting AFGL 5180 and AFGL 6366S, seems spatially close to an H ii region Sh 2−247 excited by a massive O9.5 star. Based on the knowledge of various pressures exerted by the massive star on its surroundings, the impact of its energetic feedback on the filamentary cloud is found to be insignificant. Overall, our observational outcomes favour the possibility of the CCC scenario driving MSF and the formation of HFSs towards the target sites.

Infall and outflow towards high-mass starless clump candidates

ABSTRACT The evolutionary sequence for high-mass star formation starts with massive starless clumps that go on to form protostellar, young stellar objects and then compact H ii regions. While there are many examples of the three later stages, the very early stages have proved to be elusive. We follow-up a sample of 110 mid-infrared dark clumps selected from the ATLASGAL catalogue with the IRAM telescope in an effort to identify a robust sample of massive starless clumps. We have used the HCO+ and HNC (1-0) transitions to identify clumps associated with infall motion and the SiO (2-1) transition to identity outflow candidates. We have found blue asymmetric line profile in 65 per cent of the sample, and have measured the infall velocities and mass infall rates (0.6–36 × 10−3 M⊙ yr−1) for 33 of these clumps. We find a trend for the mass infall rate decreasing with an increase of bolometric luminosity to clump mass, i.e. star formation within the clumps evolves. Using the SiO 2-1 line, we have identified good outflow candidates. Combining the infall and outflow tracers reveals that 67 per cent of quiescent clumps are already undergoing gravitational collapse or are associated with star formation; these clumps provide us with our best opportunity to determine the initial conditions and study the earliest stages of massive star formation. Finally, we provide an overview of a systematic high-resolution ALMA study of quiescent clumps selected that allows us to develop a detailed understanding of earliest stages and their subsequent evolution.

Physical and Chemical Properties of the Molecular Gas Associated with the Mid-infrared Bubble S156

Abstract Using archival infrared data of GLIMPSE, Hi-GAL, and molecular line data of SEDIGISM, MSGPCOS, and MALT90, we investigate the physical and chemical properties of the molecular gas associated with the mid-infrared bubble S156. By the method of spectral energy distribution, we made H2 column density and dust temperature maps of this region. We find two clouds with masses of 5.4 ± 1.1 × 104 M ⊙ and 2.2 ± 0.5 × 104 M ⊙, respectively. In both of the two clouds, the 13CO (2–1/1–0) and 13CO (2–1)/N2H+ (1–0) intensity ratios are enhanced on the boundary. Cloud A has a clear dust temperature gradient decreasing from the boundary to the outside region. Our analysis indicates cloud A is mainly influenced by the feedback from S156, while cloud B is affected both by S156 and the G305 complex. We also find the 13CO and C2H emissions tend to be brighter in photon dominated regions (PDRs), while N2H+ is brighter in the regions of cold gas that is far away. Furthermore, we make the abundance maps of C2H and N2H+ of cloud A. We find the abundance of C2H is enhanced in the region facing ionizing stars and it decreases steadily moving away from them. On the other hand, the abundance of N2H+ increases from the ionized boundary to the cold gas outward. These phenomena indicate C2H prefers to be produced in hot gas such as PDRs, while N2H+ could be destroyed by it. Our study also suggests the abundance ratio of C2H to N2H+ could trace PDRs in the late stages of massive star formation.

M17 MIR: A Massive Protostar with Multiple Accretion Outbursts *

Abstract We report the discovery of a massive protostar M17 MIR embedded in a hot molecular core in M17. The multiwavelength data obtained during 1993–2019 show significant mid-IR (MIR) variations, which can be split into three stages: the decreasing phase during 1993.03–mid-2004, the quiescent phase from mid-2004 to mid-2010, and the rebrightening phase from mid-2010 until now. The variation of the 22 GHz H2O maser emission, together with the MIR variation, indicates an enhanced disk accretion rate onto M17 MIR during the decreasing and rebrightening phases. Radiative transfer modeling of the spectral energy distributions of M17 MIR in the 2005 epoch (quiescent) and 2017 epoch (accretion outburst) constrains the basic stellar parameters of M17 MIR, which is an intermediate-mass protostar (M * ∼ 5.4 M ⊙) with M ̇ acc ∼ 1.1 × 10 − 5 M ⊙ yr − 1 in the 2005 epoch and M ̇ acc ∼ 1.7 × 10 − 3 M ⊙ yr − 1 in the 2017 epoch. The enhanced M ̇ acc during outburst induces the luminosity outburst ΔL ≈ 7600 L ⊙. In the accretion outburst, a larger stellar radius is required to produce M ̇ acc consistent with the value estimated from the kinematics of H2O masers. M17 MIR shows two accretion outbursts (Δt ∼ 9–20 yr) with outburst magnitudes of about 2 mag, separated by a 6 yr quiescent phase. The accretion outburst occupies 83% of the time over 26 yr. The accretion rate in outburst is variable with amplitude much lower than the contrast between quiescent and outburst phases. The extreme youth of M17 MIR suggests that minor accretion bursts are frequent in the earliest stages of massive star formation.

Stellar Feedback on the Earliest Stage of Massive Star Formation

Abstract We report SOFIA/GREAT observations of high-J CO lines and [C ii] observations of the super star cluster candidate H72.97-69.39 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which is in its very early formation stage. We use our observations to determine if shocks are heating the gas or if photon-dominated regions (PDRs) are being heated by local far-UV radiation. We use a PDR model and a shock model to determine whether the CO and [C ii] lines arise from PDRs or shocks. We can reproduce the observed high-J CO and [C ii] emission with a clumpy PDR model with the following properties: a density of 104.7 cm−3, a mass of 104 M ⊙, and UV radiation of 103.5 in units of Draine field. Comparison with the ALMA beam-filling factor suggests a higher density within the uncertainty of the fit. We find the lower-limit [C ii]/total infrared (TIR) ratio (ϵ) traced by [C ii]/TIR to be 0.026%, lower than other known young star-forming regions in the LMC. Our shock models may explain the CO (16−15) and CO (11−10) emission lines with shock velocity of 8–11 km s−1, pre-shock density of 104–105 cm−3, and G UV = 0 in units of Draine field. However, the [C ii] line emission cannot be explained by a shock model, thus it is originating in a different gas component. Observations of [O i] 63 μm predicted to be 1.1 × 10−13 W m−2 by PDR models and 7.8 × 10−15 W m−2 by shock models will help distinguish between the PDR and shock scenarios.

Cause and effects of the massive star formation in Messier 8 East

Context. Messier 8 (M8), one of the brightest H II regions in our Galaxy, is powered by massive O-type stars and is associated with recent and ongoing massive star formation. Two prominent massive star-forming regions associated with M8 are M8-Main, the particularly bright part of the large-scale H II region (mainly) ionized by the stellar system Herschel 36 (Her 36) and M8 East (M8 E), which is mainly powered by a deeply embedded young stellar object (YSO), the bright infrared (IR) source M8E-IR. Aims. We study the interaction of the massive star-forming region M8 E with its surroundings using observations of assorted diffuse and dense gas tracers that allow quantifying the kinetic temperatures and volume densities in this region. With a multiwavelength view of M8 E, we investigate the cause of star formation. Moreover, we compare the star-forming environments of M8-Main and M8 E, based on their physical conditions and the abundances of the various observed species toward them. Methods. We used the Institut de Radioastronomía Millimétrica 30 m telescope to perform an imaging spectroscopy survey of the ~1 pc scale molecular environment of M8E-IR and also performed deep integrations toward the source itself. We imaged and analyzed data for the J = 1 → 0 rotational transitions of 12CO, 13CO, N2H+, HCN, H13CN, HCO+, H13CO+, HNC, and HN13C observed for the first time toward M8 E. To visualize the distribution of the dense and diffuse gas in M8 E, we compared our velocity-integrated intensity maps of 12CO, 13CO, and N2H+ with ancillary data taken at IR and submillimeter wavelengths. We used techniques that assume local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE to determine column densities of the observed species and constrain the physical conditions of the gas that causes their emission. Examining the class 0/ I and class II YSO populations in M8 E, allows us to explore the observed ionization front (IF) as seen in the high resolution Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) 8 μm emission image. The difference between the ages of the YSOs and their distribution in M8 E were used to estimate the speed of the IF. Results. We find that 12CO probes the warm diffuse gas also traced by the GLIMPSE 8 μm emission, while N2H+ traces the cool and dense gas following the emission distribution of the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy 870 μm dust continuum. We find that the star-formation in M8 E appears to be triggered by the earlier formed stellar cluster NGC 6530, which powers an H II region giving rise to an IF that is moving at a speed ≥0.26 km s−1 across M8 E. Based on our qualitative and quantitative analysis, the J = 1 → 0 transition lines of N2H+ and HN13C appear to be more direct tracers of dense molecular gas than the J = 1 → 0 transition lines of HCN and HCO+. We derive temperatures of 80 and 30 K for the warm and cool gas components, respectively, and constrain the H2 volume densities to be in the range of 104–106 cm−3. Comparison of the observed abundances of various species reflects the fact that M8 E is at an earlier stage of massive star formation than M8-Main.

Searching for shocks in high-mass starless clump candidates

ABSTRACT In order to search for shocks in the very early stage of star formation, we performed single-point surveys of SiO J = 1–0, 2–1, and 3–2 lines and the H2CO 212−111 line towards a sample of 100 high-mass starless clump candidates (SCCs) by using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) 21-m radio telescopes. The detection rates of the SiO J = 1–0, 2–1, 3–2 lines, and the H2CO line are $31.0$, $31.0$, $19.5,$ and $93.0{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, respectively. Shocks seem to be common in this stage of massive star formation. The widths of the observed SiO lines [full width at zero power (FWZP)] range from 3.4 to 55.1 km s−1. A significant fraction ($\sim 29{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) of the detected SiO spectra have broad line widths (FWZP > 20 km s−1), which are very likely associated with fast shocks driven by protostellar outflows. This result suggests that about one third of the SiO-detected SCCs are not really starless but protostellar. On the other hand, about 40 ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the detected SiO spectra show narrow line widths (FWZP < 10 km s−1) probably associated with low-velocity shocks which are not necessarily protostellar in origin. The estimated SiO column densities are mostly 0.31−4.32 × 1012 cm−2. Comparing the SiO column densities derived from SiO J = 1–0 and 2–1 lines, we suggest that the SiO molecules in the SCCs may be in the non-LTE condition. The SiO abundances to H2 are usually 0.20−10.92 × 10−10.

Probing GLIMPSE Extended Green Objects (EGOs) with hydroxyl masers

ABSTRACT We present a study of 18 cm OH maser emission toward 20 high-mass young stellar object outflow candidates (Extended Green Objects, EGOs) identified from the Spitzer Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE). All four OH ground state lines at 1612, 1665, 1667, and 1720 MHz, together with 20-cm continuum emission, were observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array C-configuration. Follow-up polarimetric single-dish observations with the Nançay radio telescope were performed for the same OH transitions, except 1612 MHz. OH maser emission is found to be an uncommon feature of the sample, with a 50 per cent detection rate for the entire sample and a ∼44 per cent detection rate for the ‘likely’ EGOs. No 20-cm continuum emission is detected toward any of the sources. In most cases, the detected OH maser emission arises in vicinity to compact central sources; OH masers coexist with the 6.7 GHz methanol masers, but are found in more diffuse and extended halo-shaped regions of several thousand astronomical units in size. Comparing EGO samples with OH maser detection and non-detection, EGOs showing OH maser emission tend to have lower dust clump masses, but higher 24 and 4.5 μm flux densities. Thus, OH maser emission might be an indicator of more evolved EGOs, since strong compact mid-infrared emission in the absence of compact radio continuum emission is thought to be associated with the later stage of massive star formation.

Magnetic Fields in the Early Stages of Massive Star Formation as Revealed by ALMA

Abstract We present 1.3 mm ALMA dust polarization observations at a resolution of ∼0.02 pc for three massive molecular clumps, MM1, MM4, and MM9, in the infrared dark cloud G28.34+0.06. With these sensitive and high-resolution continuum data, MM1 is resolved into a cluster of condensations. The magnetic field structure in each clump is revealed by the polarized emission. We found a trend of decreasing polarized emission fraction with increasing Stokes I intensities in MM1 and MM4. Using the angular dispersion function method (a modified Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method), the plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths in two massive dense cores, MM1-Core1 and MM4-Core4, are estimated to be ∼1.6 mG and ∼0.32 mG, respectively. The virial parameters in MM1-Core1 and MM4-Core4 are calculated to be ∼0.76 and ∼0.37, respectively, suggesting that massive star formation does not start in equilibrium. Using the polarization-intensity gradient-local gravity method, we found that the local gravity is closely aligned with intensity gradient in the three clumps, and the magnetic field tends to be aligned with the local gravity in MM1 and MM4 except for regions near the emission peak, which suggests that the gravity plays a dominant role in regulating the gas collapse. Half of the outflows in MM4 and MM9 are found to be aligned within 10° of the condensation-scale (<0.05 pc) magnetic field, indicating that the magnetic field could play an important role from condensation to disk scale in the early stage of massive star formation.

ALMA reveals the magnetic field evolution in the high-mass star forming complex G9.62+0.19

Context. The role of magnetic fields during the formation of high-mass stars is not yet fully understood, and the processes related to the early fragmentation and collapse are as yet largely unexplored. The high-mass star forming region G9.62+0.19 is a well known source, presenting several cores at different evolutionary stages. Aims. We seek to investigate the magnetic field properties at the initial stages of massive star formation. We aim to determine the magnetic field morphology and strength in the high-mass star forming region G9.62+0.19 to investigate its relation to the evolutionary sequence of the cores. Methods. We made use of Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations in full polarisation mode at 1 mm wavelength (Band 7) and we analysed the polarised dust emission. We estimated the magnetic field strength via the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi and structure function methods. Results. We resolve several protostellar cores embedded in a bright and dusty filamentary structure. The polarised emission is clearly detected in six regions: two in the northern field and four in the southern field. Moreover the magnetic field is orientated along the filament and appears perpendicular to the direction of the outflows. The polarisation vectors present ordered patterns and the cores showing polarised emission are less fragmented. We suggest an evolutionary sequence of the magnetic field, and the less evolved hot core exhibits a stronger magnetic field than the more evolved hot core. An average magnetic field strength of the order of 11 mG was derived, from which we obtain a low turbulent-to-magnetic energy ratio, indicating that turbulence does not significantly contribute to the stability of the clump. We report a detection of linear polarisation from thermal line emission, probably from methanol or carbon dioxide, and we tentatively compared linear polarisation vectors from our observations with previous linearly polarised OH masers observations. We also compute the spectral index, column density, and mass for some of the cores. Conclusions. The high magnetic field strength and smooth polarised emission indicate that the magnetic field could play an important role in the fragmentation and the collapse process in the star forming region G9.62+019 and that the evolution of the cores can be magnetically regulated. One core shows a very peculiar pattern in the polarisation vectors, which can indicate a compressed magnetic field. On average, the magnetic field derived by the linear polarised emission from dust, thermal lines, and masers is pointing in the same direction and has consistent strength.

Initial phases of high-mass star formation: a multiwavelength study towards the extended green object G12.42+0.50

We present a multiwavelength study of the extended green object, G12.42+0.50 in this paper. The associated ionized, dust, and molecular components of this source are studied in detail employing various observations at near-, mid- and far-infrared, submillimeter and radio wavelengths. Radio continuum emission mapped at 610 and 1390 MHz, using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope, India, advocates for a scenario of coexistence of an UC H II region and an ionized thermal jet possibly powered by the massive young stellar object, IRAS 18079-1756 with an estimated spectral type of B1 - B0.5. Shock-excited lines of H2 and [FeII], as seen in the near-infrared spectra obtained with UKIRT-UIST, lend support to this picture. Cold dust emission shows a massive clump of mass 1375 M{\sun} enveloping G12.42+0.50. Study of the molecular gas kinematics using the MALT90 and JCMT archival data unravels the presence of both infall activity and large-scale outflow suggesting an early stage of massive star formation in G12.42+0.50. A network of filamentary features are also revealed merging with the massive clump mimicking a hub-filament layout. Velocity structure along these indicate bulk inflow motion.

Probing high-mass star formation in the outflow source G12.42+0.50

This talk is based on the paper “Initial phases of high-mass star formation: A multiwavelength study towards the extended green object G12.42+0.50” by Namitha Issac, Anandmayee Tej, Tie Liu, Watson Varricatt, Sarita Vig, Ishwara Chandra CH and Mathias Schultheis and has been accepted for publication in MNRAS. A multiwavelength study of the extended green object G12.42+0.50 is presented. The associated ionized, dust, and molecular components of this source is probed using various observations at near- and far-infrared, submillimeter and radio wavelengths. The radio continuum emission mapped at 1390 and 610 MHz calls for a scenario of co-existence of an ultracompact (UC) H II region with an ionized jet possibly powered by the same young stellar object (YSO). Shock-excited lines of H2 and [Fe II] seen in the NIR spectra provide support to this picture. Study of the gas kinematics of the molecular cloud reveals the presence of both infall activity and large-scale molecular outflow, suggesting an early stage of massive star formation in G12.42+0.50.

Zooming in to Massive Star Birth

Abstract We present high-resolution (0.″2, 1000 au) 1.3 mm ALMA observations of the massive infrared dark cloud clump, G028.37+00.07-C1, thought to harbor the early stages of massive star formation. Using (3–2), we resolve the previously identified C1-S core, separating the bulk of its emission from two nearby protostellar sources. C1-S is thus identified as a massive (∼50 M ⊙), compact (∼0.1 pc diameter) starless core, e.g., with no signs of outflow activity. Being highly deuterated, this is a promising candidate for a pre-stellar core on the verge of collapse. An analysis of its dynamical state indicates a sub-virial velocity dispersion compared to a trans-Alfvénic turbulent core model. However, virial equilibrium could be achieved with sub-Alfvénic conditions involving magnetic field strengths of ∼2 mG.

Chemical modeling of internal photon-dominated regions surrounding deeply embedded HC/UCHII regions

Aims. We aim to investigate the chemistry of internal photon-dominated regions (PDRs) surrounding deeply embedded hypercompact (HC) and ultracompact (UC) HII regions. We search for specific tracers of this evolutionary stage of massive star formation that can be detected with current astronomical facilities. Methods. We modeled hot cores with embedded HC/UCHII regions (called HII region models in the article despite the fact that we do not model the HII region itself), by coupling the astrochemical code Saptarsy to a radiative transfer framework obtaining the spatio-temporal evolution of abundances as well as time-dependent synthetic spectra. In these models where we focused on the internal PDR surrounding the HII region, the gas temperature is set to the dust temperature and we do not include dynamics thus the density structure is fixed. We compared this to hot molecular core (HMC) models and studied the effect on the chemistry of the radiation field which is included in the HII region models only during the computation of abundances. In addition, we investigated the chemical evolution of the gas surrounding HII regions with models of different densities at the ionization front, different sizes of the ionized cavity and different initial abundances. Results. We obtain the time evolution of synthetic spectra for a dozen of selected species as well as ratios of their integrated intensities. We find that some molecules such as C, N2H+, CN, and HCO do not trace the inner core and so are not good tracers to distinguish the HII/PDR regions to the HMCs phase. On the contrary, C+ and O trace the internal PDRs, in the two models starting with different initial abundances, but are unfortunately currently unobservable with the current achievable spatial resolution because of the very thin internal PDR (Δ rPDR < 100 AU). The emission of these two tracers is very dependent on the size of the HII region and on the density in the PDR. In addition, we find that the abundance profiles are highly affected by the choice of the initial abundances, hence the importance to properly define them.

The ionizing source of the bipolar HII region S106: A close massive binary

Context. S106, one of the best known bipolar HII regions, has been thoroughly studied and modeled at infrared, submillimeter, and millimeter wavelengths. This region is one of the nearest examples of the late stages of massive star formation, in which the newly formed star that ionizes it is still surrounded by vast amounts of gas and dust. However, little is known about the heavily obscured central source of this region, S106IR. Aims. We investigate the possible binarity of the central source is investigated; this binarity is considered to be likely given the high binarity fraction among massive stars. Methods. We have carried out visible and near-infrared photometric monitoring looking for short-term variability, and we took special interest in that related to the presence of a close binary companion to S106IR, which may produce periodic eclipses or tidal distortion of the shape of the members of the system. Results. A periodic variability of S106IR in the J band is found with a period of 5.0 days and an amplitude of ≃0.1 mag. The light curve displays a slow rise from minimum to maximum followed by a steep decrease, and can be well reproduced by a close binary system composed of two stars with different luminosities orbiting each other in an elliptical orbit of moderate eccentricity. S106IR also shows hints of short-term variability that is possibly related to accretion. We also report variability of four other stars previously classified as members of the S106 cluster, all of which are strong X-ray emitters. Conclusions. The newly discovered close binarity of S106IR adds a new element to the modeling of the nebula and the understanding of the dynamics of the gas around the ionizing source, which suggests that the components of the binary are accreting via a circumbinary disk. Binarity also helps to explain the apparent mismatch between the spectral type of the ionizing source inferred from the nebular spectrum and its high brightness at near-infrared wavelengths.

New Insights in the Mid-infrared Bubble N49 Site: A Clue of Collision of Filamentary Molecular Clouds

Abstract We investigate the star formation processes operating in a mid-infrared bubble N49 site that harbors an O-type star in its interior, an ultracompact H ii region, and a 6.7 GHz methanol maser at its edges. The 13CO line data reveal two velocity components (at velocity peaks ∼88 and ∼95 km s−1) in the direction of the bubble. An elongated filamentary feature (length >15 pc) is investigated in each molecular cloud component, and the bubble is found at the interface of these two filamentary molecular clouds. The Herschel temperature map traces all these structures in a temperature range of ∼16–24 K. In the velocity space of 13CO, the two molecular clouds are separated by ∼7 km s−1, and are interconnected by a lower-intensity intermediate velocity emission (i.e., a broad bridge feature). A possible complementary molecular pair at [87, 88] km s−1 and [95, 96] km s−1 is also observed in the velocity channel maps. These observational signatures are in agreement with the outcomes of simulations of the cloud–cloud collision process. There are also noticeable embedded protostars and Herschel clumps distributed toward the filamentary features including the intersection zone of the two molecular clouds. In the bubble site, different early evolutionary stages of massive star formation are also present. Together, these observational results suggest that in the bubble N49 site, the collision of the filamentary molecular clouds appears to be operated about 0.7 Myr ago, and may have triggered the formation of embedded protostars and massive stars.

Searching for initial stage of massive star formation around the H II region G18.2–0.3

Sometimes, early star formation can be found in cold and dense molecular clouds, such as an infrared dark cloud. Considering that star formation often occurs in clusters, H II regions may be triggering a new generation of star formation, so we can search for the initial stage of massive star formation around H II regions. Based on the above, this work introduces one method to search for the initial stage of massive star formation around H II regions. Towards one section of the H II region G18.2–0.3, multiwavelength observations are carried out to investigate its physical properties. Through analysis, we find three potential initial stages of massive star formation, suggesting that it is feasible to use in searching for the initial stage of massive star formation around H II regions.

ATLASGAL-selected massive clumps in the inner Galaxy

The ATLASGAL survey provides an ideal basis for detailed studies of large numbers of massive star forming clumps covering the whole range of evolutionary stages. The ATLASGAL Top100 is a sample of clumps selected from their infrared and radio properties to be representative for the whole range of evolutionary stages. The ATLASGAL Top100 sources are the focus of a number of detailed follow-up studies that will be presented in a series of papers. In the present work we use the dust continuum emission to constrain the physical properties of this sample and identify trends as a function of source evolution. We determine flux densities from mid-infrared to submm wavelength (8-870 micron) images and use these values to fit their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and determine their dust temperature and flux. Combining these with recent distances from the literature including maser parallax measurements we determine clump masses, luminosities and column densities. We find trends for increasing temperature, luminosity and column density with the proposed evolution sequence, confirming that this sample is representative of different evolutionary stages of massive star formation. We show that most of the sample has the ability to form massive stars (including the most massive O-type stars) and that the majority is gravitationally unstable and hence likely to be collapsing. The highest column density ATLASGAL sources presented cover the whole range of evolutionary stages from the youngest to the most evolved high-mass star forming clumps. Their study provides a unique starting point for more in-depth research on massive star formation in four distinct evolutionary stages whose well defined physical parameters afford more detailed studies. As most of the sample is closer than 5 kpc, these sources are also ideal for follow-up observations with high spatial resolution.

Searching for Compact Radio Sources Associated with UCH ii Regions

Abstract Ultra-compact (UC)H ii regions represent a very early stage of massive star formation. The structure and evolution of these regions are not yet fully understood. Interferometric observations showed in recent years that compact sources of uncertain nature are associated with some UCH ii regions. To examine this, we carried out VLA 1.3 cm observations in the A configuration of selected UCH ii regions in order to report additional cases of compact sources embedded in UCH ii regions. With these observations, we find 13 compact sources that are associated with 9 UCH ii regions. Although we cannot establish an unambiguous nature for the newly detected sources, we assess some of their observational properties. According to the results, we can distinguish between two types of compact sources. One type corresponds to sources that are probably deeply embedded in the dense ionized gas of the UCH ii region. These sources are photoevaporated by the exciting star of the region and will last for 104–105 years. They may play a crucial role in the evolution of the UCH ii region as the photoevaporated material could replenish the expanding plasma and might provide a solution to the so-called lifetime problem of these regions. The second type of compact sources is not associated with the densest ionized gas of the region. A few of these sources appear resolved and may be photoevaporating objects such as those of the first type, but with significantly lower mass depletion rates. The remaining sources of this second type appear unresolved, and their properties are varied. We speculate on the similarity between the sources of the second type and those of the Orion population of radio sources.
