Free access to information resources for people with visual disabilities in university libraries

The current study aimed to reveal the reality of free access to information resources for people with visual disabilities in university libraries in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and to find out whether Jordanian libraries meet the information needs of the beneficiaries, students with visual disabilities. The study used a qualitative approach, on a sample that consisted of (10) library directors in the public and private universities of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, by conducting interviews with them that were determined in advance, and after obtaining information and analyzing it by using content analysis, the results revealed the importance of developing encouraging policies and providing financial resources to improve access to information resources, which indicates the urgent need to increase funding and provide training courses for staff in university libraries. The study also recommended the need to improve awareness of the needs of students with visual disabilities to reach the free access to information.

Evaluation of a Dementia Training Course for Staff of a Center of Dementia Care

Introduction: Literature shows poor dementia training and competencies among health and social professionals. Due to the growing prevalence of people with dementia and all the related care demands, specialized training is increasingly needed but must be effective in terms of impact on knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. We aimed to analyze the impact of a first-level dementia training course for staff of a new specialized center for people with dementia, considering the first three levels of Kirkpatrick’s evaluation framework, namely, staff reaction (satisfaction), skills and learning (knowledge and dementia attitudes), and behavior changes. Methods: This is a single-center group pre-post design study of a 12-session online course. An online questionnaire was administered to measure satisfaction, expectations, knowledge/learning, attitudes (Dementia Attitude Scale), and new behaviors/practices. We compared perceived knowledge (Wilcoxon signed-rank test) and attitudes (paired t test). Thematic analysis explored new behaviors/practices. Results: Eighty-five professionals and 1 volunteer were included (median age 31, 92% female). Satisfaction with the training was high (median 4/5). Perceived knowledge improved (median 3–4; p < 0.001). The knowledge test median score was 70.8%. After training, participants showed better attitudes toward dementia (mean 116.5, SD 10.3, to mean 122.2, SD 11.5; p < 0.001). Most (93%) said their behavior/practice changed. Thematic analysis yielded four new behavior/practice dimensions: care provision/interaction, communication, family/caregivers, and self-confidence. Conclusions: The course improved all dimensions evaluated, suggesting it effectively provides first-level dementia training. This may be transferable to similar settings.

Organization of training of specialists in the workplace in the format of hybrid learning

The article presents the results of the study, which indicate the real possibility of training specialists on the job. The introduction of a system of continuous professional development in the format of hybrid training creates conditions for consolidating and improving the professional knowledge of nursing staff, which in the future will significantly influence the quality of medical care for the children's population of the region. The developed model of training nurses in a medical organization using a structured program and hybrid training can be used as a tool to consolidate professional knowledge and skills, as well as to form new competencies. Purpose of the study. To increase the professional competence of nursing professionals in caring for children with epilepsy in specialized neurological departments on the basis of organizational modeling of part-time nursing staff training courses conducted in a medical organization. Results. After training during reflection, the nurses expressed the following opinions: «There was a desire to engage in repeated training cycles»; «The attitude to the performance of professional duties has changed»; «Responsibility for the result of care has increased»; «Working with cases contributed to the formation of clinical thinking and stimulated the search for additional information to improve one’s competence», 54.3 ± 4.9; 96.7 ± 1.84; 53.2 ± 6.2; 67.4 ± 4.2 per 100 respondents, respectively. All nurses (100 %) noted that the new form of final certification not only interested them, but also prompted a desire to take part in the WORLDskills. championship. сonclusion. The study is of practical importance for specialists in medical and educational organizations for organizing a hybrid form of education.

Nutrition in the comprehensive approach of Health Promoting Schools: Survey on attitudes, knowledge and experiences in a sample of European teachers

BACKGROUND: A healthy diet is a major factor in childhood for proper mental and physical development, and schools are valuable settings for promoting nutritional health. Teachers have a key role as educators and as a link between children, families, and institutions. OBJECTIVES: The study aims at describing the teachers’ profile and to evaluate the level of adherence of their schools to the recommendations by Health Promoting Schools concerning nutritional issues. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 131 Spanish and Italian teachers from kindergartens and primary schools. RESULTS: The lack of a structured approach to school food emerged, as well as a low quality level of food consumption at school. Among the positive aspects, there is the compliance with the dietary reference values for the intake of nutrients and energy of meals supplied by cafeterias and the collaboration with nutritionists in health services, but other desirable circumstances are neglected (e.g. training courses for staff, the involvement of students, supply of water and vegetables such as healthy drinks and snacks). CONCLUSION: The study confirmed the need to train teachers and to strengthen school action plans, particularly the agenda around the sustainability of the school food and nutrition environment.

Leadership Behavior Impact on Safety Culture in Jeddah Eye Hospital: أثر السلوك القيادي على ثقافة السلامة في مستشفى العيون بجدة

This study aims to investigate the relationship between leadership behaviour, safety culture, and safety performance in the healthcare industry as well as review recent articles on patient safety culture. to explore leadership practices within employee relationship, tasks done, openness of communication, organizational structure and teamwork and response to an error. Besides, the study aims to explore the degree of awareness of the safety culture among workers at Jeddah Eye Hospital and explore the leadership role in the Safety Culture at Jeddah Eye Hospital. The study followed the cross- sectional approach in which 350 questionnaires were delivered to hospital employees, with 195 valid responses; 55.7% valid response rate. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to examine the factor structure and see if the composite reliability was significant with a factor loading of &gt;0.5, resulting in an acceptable model fit. according to the results of a one- way ANOVA analysis, physicians have much more unfavourable patient safety culture perceptions and safety performance perceptions than non- physicians. The results of the route analysis demonstrate that leadership conduct has an impact on safety culture and performance in the healthcare industry. Contingency leadership and a favourable patient safety organization culture influenced and improved safety performance. The study also revealed that a well- managed system that combines leadership considerations, hospital staff training courses, and a reliable safety reporting system can improve safety performance.

Identifying Feasible Heart Failure Interventions Suitable for the Jordan Healthcare system: A Delphi Study.

Interventions and strategies should align with the context and capacity of the health system. Identifying the most feasible and appropriate heart failure interventions in Jordan will improve heart failure management and clinical outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to derive consensus from clinicians (using the Delphi method) regarding the most feasible and appropriate heart failure interventions in Jordan. A two-round Delphi study involving seven clinicians and policy makers were conducted. The Delphi results found consensus for the feasibility of the educational materials, follow up phone call, cardiac rehabilitation, group session, and training courses for staff. The components that were not feasible were: multidisciplinary team, individual session, and telemonitoring devices. The present study demonstrates the importance of utilizing interventions tailored to patients' characteristics and aligned with the capacity of healthcare system.

The theoretical basis of a nationally implemented type 2 diabetes prevention programme: how is the programme expected to produce changes in behaviour?

BackgroundIt is considered best practice to provide clear theoretical descriptions of how behaviour change interventions should produce changes in behaviour. Commissioners of the National Health Service Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS-DPP) specified that the four independent provider organisations must explicitly describe the behaviour change theory underpinning their interventions. The nationally implemented programme, launched in 2016, aims to prevent progression to Type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults through changing diet and physical activity behaviours. This study aimed to: (a) develop a logic model describing how the NHS-DPP is expected to work, and (b) document the behaviour change theories underpinning providers’ NHS-DPP interventions.MethodsA logic model detailing how the programme should work in changing diet and activity behaviours was extracted from information in three specification documents underpinning the NHS-DPP. To establish how each of the four providers expected their interventions to produce behavioural changes, information was extracted from their programme plans, staff training materials, and audio-recorded observations of mandatory staff training courses attended in 2018. All materials were coded using Michie and Prestwich’s Theory Coding Scheme.ResultsThe NHS-DPP logic model included information provision to lead to behaviour change intentions, followed by a self-regulatory cycle including action planning and monitoring behaviour. None of the providers described an explicit logic model of how their programme will produce behavioural changes. Two providers stated their programmes were informed by the COM-B (Capability Opportunity Motivation – Behaviour) framework, the other two described targeting factors from multiple theories such as Self-Regulation Theory and Self-Determination Theory. All providers cited examples of proposed links between some theoretical constructs and behaviour change techniques (BCTs), but none linked all BCTs to specified constructs. Some discrepancies were noted between the theory described in providers’ programme plans and theory described in staff training.ConclusionsA variety of behaviour change theories were used by each provider. This may explain the variation between providers in BCTs selected in intervention design, and the mismatch between theory described in providers’ programme plans and staff training. Without a logic model describing how they expect their interventions to work, justification for intervention contents in providers’ programmes is not clear.

The Impact of Performance Management on Organizational Excellence in Educational Institutions and How to Strengthen it in Private Schools

The study was designed to measure performance management's impact on organizational excellence in educational institutions and how to support it. It used a descriptive-analytical method to deal with data and its classification, and its tool was designed to collect data from the study sample and then analyze it through the statistical package program (SPSS). The study community determines the educational institutions and how to strengthen them. The inspection unit consisted of all directors, heads of departments, and consultants in educational institutions and how to support them and their number (70). The study found a high level of performance management in its dimensions (performance planning, performance development, performance guidance, and performance evaluation) and a high level of organizational excellence in its dimensions (excellence of leadership, the excellence of strategies, and excellence of operations). It also concluded that there is a significant and statistically significant impact on management (Performance planning, performance development, performance guidance, performance evaluation) on organizational excellence in its dimensions (excellence of leadership, the excellence of strategies, and excellence of processes) in educational institutions and how to support them. To maintain the high level of application of the process of performance management in the organization and recommended the study of the need to strengthen and develop after the development of performance through the support and development of activities and training courses for staff more than it is through the results obtained a positive impact on all dimensions of organizational excellence.&#x0D; &#x0D; Received: 19 December 2020 / Accepted: 8 February 2021 / Published: 5 March 2021

Energy sustainability in teaching and outreach initiatives and the contribution to the 2030 Agenda

PurposeConsidering the different roles universities can perform to contribute to sustainable development, it is through teaching and outreach that they might be able to connect to the academic and local communities the most. The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which energy sustainability is being considered in campus teaching and outreach activities of different higher education institutions worldwide. In this context, this exploratory study was developed.Design/methodology/approachThrough an online survey, a group of 36 universities from all continents was inquired about the level of sustainability in energy aspects of teaching and outreach activities, including curriculum change, training courses for staff and the regularity of outreach projects.FindingsThe results allowed global analysis concerning challenges and opportunities of these educational activities. This study also touches upon the interconnection between these practices and the contribution of universities towards the 2030 Agenda, and how universities can expand their activities and contribute practically to society. In terms of practical contributions, this study provides recommendations for higher education institutions to develop further in the area of energy sustainability through teaching and outreach.Originality/valueEnergy is a sustainability aspect relatively well covered by actions on campus operations, but there is a paucity of studies connecting this topic to teaching and outreach activities. This study is an approach to not only fill this gap but also reinforce the university role and contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals.

A Post-Training Study on the Budgeting Criteria Set and Priority for MALE UAS Design

A recent study proposed a systematic “(budgeting) knowledge discovery educational framework” (BKDEF). This BKDEF is focused on guiding staff training courses for enhancing the ability to allocate the “large but limited” budget for single, high-cost product design. However, except for its initial application to support the budget planning for the next generation fighter design, the framework’s effectiveness is still awaiting further scrutiny. This study fills the gap by providing the “second application” of BKDEF, which is to support another similar decision for designing the medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial system (MALE UAS). This paper verified the effectiveness of the framework through an empirical application and obtained the knowledge required to allocate a budget for MALE UAS design following the group-opinion basis. In addition, the original analytical style for the last “decision analysis” phase of BKDEF, which included pure quantitative analytical items in order to understand the similarities and diversities in the individual opinions, was replaced by a comparative study to discover the homogeneity and heterogeneity between the two budgeting decisions in a larger scope. As a consequence, the two criteria sets did not overlap despite both decisions being related to military aircraft design. The absolute weights for the MALE UAS design criteria were more balanced than those for the air-superior fighter design, even if the size of the criteria set was larger. The results pave a way for future studies on how other military aircrafts are designed, as more confidence about the use of a BKDEF can be gained from increasing applications, thus more insightful aerospace knowledge can be exploited in comparisons with these works.

Case Study of Effectiveness Evaluation of Staff Training Courses in Refah Bank

One of the newest and most well-known train patterns for evaluating the effectiveness of in-service staffs training is Kircpatrick model. In this paper, the effectiveness of staff training courses of Refah-bank is evaluated. A questionnaire consisted of five components which include: reaction, learning, of behavior, the results and the innovation in role of confounding factors is handed out. The survey results show that three factors (reactions, behavior and innovation) have a significant effect on the teachings effectiveness according to Kircpatrick model. And that two factors (learning and results of the courses) have not a significant effect.

A stroke staff training programme involving expert patients: a case study of its impact on staff and service development

Aim: To explore the long term impact of an interprofessional staff training course involving expert patients addressing the psychological, communication and cognitive needs of stroke patients. Methods: Thematic framework analysis of focus group and interview transcripts from a convenience sample of course participants, which identified key overarching analytical themes. Findings: Participants discussed the impact of the course on their understanding and awareness of, and empathy with, patients and their needs, up to six years after course attendance. Involvement of expert patients was key to this. However, despite their perceived development of awareness and skills, participants felt team and systemic barriers obstructed practice change. Conclusions: A long term qualitative service evaluation of a staff training course involving expert patients helped staff to develop a holistic outlook, improving their understanding of patients with psychological, communication and cognitive problems, and awareness of their needs. However, training alone was perceived to be insufficient to achieve the practice change required to improve patient care. Implications for practice: Involving expert patients in staff training could improve staff’s awareness and understanding of patients and their needs Actively involving expert patients in staff training could bring positive changes to workplace culture and person-centred practice Multidisciplinary, practical, workbased, reflective courses with quality manuals and workbooks are valued by staff Training alone is not sufficient to ensure practice change or implementation of newly acquired skills, even if staff are highly motivated. Exploring the perceived competence of airport ground staff in dealing with unruly passenger behaviors

Unruly Passenger Behaviors (UPBs) are a challenge for service provision enterprises, notably the airline industry. To explore ground staff competence and difficulties in dealing with UPBs, a questionnaire was established in consultation with managers of three multinational airlines, and was duly completed by airline ground staff ( n = 494). Response analysis using Rasch models identified the most challenging UPBs and assessed staff competence in handling UPBs. Some UPBs were commonly challenging for the staff of all airlines, whereas some were challenging only for the staff of specific airlines. Inter-airline differences emerged in regard to difficulty and staff competence in managing specific UPBs; this could reflect differences in company policy, training programs, staff support, and authorizations provided. These results suggest procedures by which airlines could improve UPB handling, including the establishment of appropriate service-staff authorizations, passenger education, complaint mechanisms, unruly passenger databases, information feedback loops, and staff training courses on procedures for dealing with different UPBs.

Bi-regional training course for staff managing healthcare-assocaited infection (HAI) with minimal resources

To prevent and control Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI), it is necessary to have adequately trained staff and substantial financial resources. The aim of this training was to train personnel at various levels in the healthcare system in multifaceted infection control practices specifically for situations where resources are limited.

Negotiating Different Assumptions

Growing diversity among international students requires analysis of the experience of particular groups of international students, which would provide implications to understand other groups of students. Changes in the society encouraged the Japanese to seek professional training on postgraduate courses in Japan as well as overseas. Employing a qualitative approach, semistructured interviews were conducted with mature Japanese students and staff to illustrate how these students negotiate their experiences. Among several findings identified in the research are the gaps in assumptions among stakeholders of international higher education. The stakeholders appear not to appreciate fully that these students learn from their experience and improve in four competencies: knowledge, communication, academic expectation, and learning from experience. The research reveals the potential of training courses on the awareness of these assumptions, and the crucial role of institutional leadership of universities to implement these training courses for staff and students.

Through The Maze: The Development of a Learning Pathway Through a Six-Month Hand Therapy Rotation

Junior therapists starting a six-month rotation in hand therapy soon realise that protocols or guidelines of care do not cover every eventuality presented in the workplace, nor do they provide a failsafe pathway through their rotation. Self-perceived lack of knowledge was reportedly reducing proficient junior therapists to novice practitioners. To help them through this maze of new ideas and treatment concepts, ‘islands-of-learning’ formulated from 12 stand-alone modules have been developed in consultation with junior therapists, that focus on various learning needs to provide a structured learning pathway through their rotation. These ‘islands’ are undertaken bi-weekly and are designed to enable junior therapists to gain a broad grounding in each subject matter. This method has allowed therapists a sense of control over their own learning and reduced the feeling of being overwhelmed by the amount of new information they must acquire. By the end of their rotations, they have developed their own resource pack. This idea has proved successful within the hand therapy department and subsequently other departments within the trust have developed similar training courses for staff during their basic grade rotations.
