Enhancing Carbon Sequestration in Mediterranean Agroforestry Systems: A Review

The agroforestry systems with a high potential for C sequestration are those degraded by poor management strategies. Studies on changes in soil C status in these ecosystems mostly take into account labile C pools. Labile and stable soil organic matter (SOM) fractions are affected by soil management and land-use changes. Stable C pools are essential to understanding effects of land-use on soil C storage in the long term. The SOM stability is partly enhanced by the interaction of SOM with minerals and its inclusion into soil aggregates. Recalcitrant substances (e.g., lignin and chitin) also contribute to the passive SOM fraction. Macroaggregates mostly reflect the influence of plant roots and coarse intra-aggregate particulate SOM (POM), whereas microaggregates reflect the influence of fine interaggregate POM, clay concentration and humified SOM fraction. Often, POM is more sensitive to soil management changes than total SOM. Glomalin is a recalcitrant protein consisting of chitin produced by mycorrhizal fungi to protect hyphae. Glomalin has implications on C sequestration in agroforestry soils, but further research is needed before any prediction can be made. One challenge is reducing the CO2 emission from roots, and increasing the recalcitrant root C.

The Effect of Crop Rotation and Cultivation History on Predicted Carbon Sequestration in Soils of Two Experimental Fields in the Moscow Region, Russia

Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in arable soils is a challenging goal. We focused on the effect of crop rotation and previous land use for future carbon sequestration on two experimental fields on Retisols with four contrasting fertilization treatments each. We analyzed the SOC dynamics and used the RothC model to forecast the SOC. We found a consistent increase in SOC stocks and stable fractions of the soil organic matter (SOM) with C accumulation in the next 70 years compared to the 90-year experimental period, more evident under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) compared with the RCP8.5 scenario. The expected increase in SOC will be higher in the crop rotation with a grass field than in the experiment with an alternation of row crops and cereals. The efficiency depended on stable SOM fractions, and fields with more extended cultivation history showed higher SOM stability. Proper crop rotations are more important for SOC stability than the uncertainty associated with the climate change scenarios that allows timely adaptation. The goal of a 4‰ annual increase of SOC stocks may be reached under rotation with grasses in 2020–40 and 2080–90 when applying a mineral or organic fertilizer system for scenario RCP4.5 and a mineral fertilizer system in 2080–2090 for scenario RCP8.5.

Characteristics of soil organic matter within an erosional landscape under agriculture in Northeast China: stock, source, and thermal stability

The characteristics of soil organic matter (SOM) such as stocks, sources and stability, are important for understanding soil functioning and C cycling in an eroding field. In this study we investigated the characteristics of SOM in bulk soil and aggregates collected from three positions (shoulder, back, and foot) on a sloping field in Northeast China using stable and radioactive isotope (13C and 14C) and thermogravimetry (TG) techniques. The field had originally been populated with C3 grassland plants before conversion to C4 corn dominated arable cropping approximately 80 years ago. Soil samples were collected from 0–120 cm soil profiles in 20 cm depth intervals. Erosion rates were estimated by 137Cs analysis to be 0.21 cm yr–1 and 0.08 cm yr–1 at the shoulder and back positions, respectively. A greater proportion of small macroaggregates (2–0.25 mm) and microaggregates (0.25–0.053 mm) were found in the topsoil and subsoil layers at the foot position compared with the shoulder position. The concentration and storage of soil organic C (SOC) in the bulk soil was significantly lower at the shoulder and back positions compared with the foot position. Greater thermal-labile SOM concentration and storage were observed at the foot position compared with the shoulder and back positions. Positive relationships between C4-derived SOC and the proportion of thermal-labile SOM suggested that most thermal-labile SOM was C4-derived from the recent corn (young SOC), while most stable SOM fractions were C3-derived from previous grassland vegetation (old SOC). However, labile SOM from old SOC was also an important part of total thermal-labile SOM, particularly in deep soil horizons (below 40 cm) at all sampling positions. Small macroaggregates had a greater SOC content, δ13C, and thermal-labile SOM proportion, and younger SOC age, compared with microaggregates and silt + clay (<0.053 mm) fractions, except at the 40–60 cm depth at the foot position. As the mass of aggregates accounted for 32–50% of the bulk soil, about half of thermal-labile and total SOC were stored as associations with silt + clay fractions at erosional and depositional points. Our results indicated that: (1) more thermal-labile and total SOM were stored at depositional position, (2) compared with new carbon sources, old SOM contributed to a large proportion of thermal-labile SOM on an eroding slope, particularly in deep soil, and, (3) soil aggregates and silt + clay fractions had equivalent roles in SOC sequestration in both erosional and depositional locations.

Soil carbon and nitrogen stocks and the quality of soil organic matter under silvopastoral systems in the Brazilian Cerrado

This study investigated soil carbon and nitrogen stocks and quality of soil organic matter in an Eutric Haplic Cambisol four years after the conversion of degraded pastures into silvopastoral systems in the Brazilian Cerrado. The integrated production systems were composed of marandu grass (Urochloa brizanta) and Eucalyptus cloeziana or Eucalyptus urograndis. These systems were compared with areas of regenerating stratum and native vegetation of the Cerrado biome. A randomized statistical design was used, and soil chemical and biological attributes and soil CO2 efflux were evaluated (p < 0.05). After four years of implantation, soil carbon and nitrogen stocks increased in silvopastoral systems in relation to regeneration stratum, but were still lower than those in native vegetation. The chemical and granulometric soil fractionations indicated that carbon was protected in the most stable soil organic matter fractions (humin and silt + clay). There was an increase in soil microbial carbon during the rainy season and the metabolic quotient during the dry period. The deposition of plant material and soil tillage in silvopastoral systems composed of marandu grass (Urochloa) and Eucalyptus cloeziana contributed to an increase in soil microbial carbon at the 10–20 cm soil layer. The soil CO2 efflux, during the rainy and dry seasons, was similar between both silvopastoral systems and native vegetation, probably indicating greater diversity of organisms and roots in these systems than in regeneration stratum. We conclude that the introduction of integrated systems improved soil quality, allowing greater protection of soil organic matter.

Susceptible soil organic matter, SOM, fractions to agricultural management practices in salt-affected soils

In the recent decades, soil salinity became the main human-induced soil degradation causes in Egypt’s Nile Delta Valley (ENDV) by affecting the stabilization processes of soil organic matter (SOM). However, soil organic carbon (SOC) is highly conserved by aggregating the stabilized organic molecules under sound agricultural management. In particular, labile SOM fractions assumed to be dually influenced by salinity and agricultural management practices other than the stabilized fractions. This work aimed to study various labile and stable SOM fractions that are more susceptible to the current agricultural practices in salt-affected soils of the ENDV area. Three different agro-ecological sites were studied: Eastern (EH, EM soils) and Western (WM, WL soils) Delta regions dominated by Vertic Torrifluvents, and Coastal region (NCH, NCM soils) dominated by Typic Calcitorrerts of high CaCO3 contents. Two different salinity levels were detected in each site; low in WL soils, medium in WM, NCM, and EM soils, and high in EH and NCH soils. The least values in EM, WL, and NCM soils were due to the recurrent legume applications. The carbon content of glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) (C-GRSP) was positively correlated with SOC and water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) fraction confirming the contribution of GRSP to the stabilization of SOM. The lower soil β-glucosidase, phosphatase, and protease enzymes activities were in those soils with larger salinity levels in each site as NCH < NCM, WM < WL, and EH < EM reflecting the effect of soil salinity and CaCO3 contents on soil metabolic activities. Extracted organic carbon (EOC) in both humic and fulvic fractions was higher in EH, WM, WL, and EM soils than in NCH and NCM soils. The chemical composition of SOM obtained by the pyrolysis gas chromatography showed that lignocellulosic and condensed aromatic structures in SOM increased significantly with CaCO3 and salinity. In conclusion, the considered SOM fractions such as WEOC, EOC, GRSP, C-GRSP, together with the pyrolytic results can be considered as significant indicators in the dynamic stability of SOM. Intercropping with legumes may increase the stability of SOM fractions in salt-affected soils of degraded lands. In calcareous soils, severe alteration in SOC conservation was observed and negatively influenced the active constituents of SOM.

Conventional versus agro-ecological intensification: assessing the effect of conservation agriculture in maize cropping systems with the DSSAT model in Côte d’Ivoire (West Africa)

Integrated soil fertility management options are being promoted as ways of adapting agricultural systems to sustain yields on highly degraded and poor soils encountered throughout West Africa. The efficiency of these practices may be affected by high variability and uncertainty associated with seasonal rainfall, especially for areas such as Cote d’Ivoire, where intra-seasonal rainfall has been observed to change from 1 year to another. The DSSAT crop simulation model was used in this study as a tool to evaluate the impacts of soil improvement options including inorganic fertilizer and conservation agriculture generating higher carbon sequestration and crop yield in maize agro-ecosystems. The model was calibrated using agronomic data for three cropping seasons from 2009 to 2010 in Goulikao (Center-West Cote d’Ivoire) and Aheremou 2 (Central Cote d’Ivoire), respectively and validated against independent datasets of yield of 2003–2004 seasons in the buffer zone of the Lamto Natural Reserve, Central Cote d’Ivoire. The model predicted average maize yields of 1454 kg ha−1 across the sites versus an observed average value of 1736 kg ha−1, R2 of 0.72, and RMSE of 597 kg ha−1 after the default values for stable soil organic matter fraction used in the model were substituted by the estimated one. For the validation, the predicted higher maize yield was consistently related to fallow biomass inputs and different rates of fertilizer, thus generating a RMSE of total aboveground biomass and grain yield of 606 kg ha−1 and 350 kg ha−1, respectively. The impact of fallow residues and cropping sequence on subsequent maize yield was simulated and compared with conventional fertilizer and control data using 12 years historic climate time series. We conclude that soil fertility improvements through conservation agriculture can sustain grain yield at the same level as conventional inputs of urea against larger climate variability. However, this system may be substituted by conventional agriculture when climate forecast reveals a dry cropping season year.

Understanding the relations between soil organic matter fractions and N2O emissions in a long‐term integrated crop–livestock system

AbstractThe nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in agricultural systems are influenced by edaphoclimatic conditions, and the availability of soil organic matter (SOM) is a key factor. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accumulation of labile and stable SOM fractions and possible relations with N2O emissions using a multivariate approach in a 24‐year integrated crop–livestock experiment in the Cerrado region. The management systems consisted of: continuous cropping under no tillage (CC‐NT), continuous cropping under annual heavy disc harrow (CC‐CT), an integrated crop–livestock system under no tillage (CLS‐NT) and an adjacent area of native Cerrado as reference. The cumulative N2O emissions were quantified over a period of 146 days throughout the cultivation of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). Labile and stable soil carbon (C) fractions and C contents in classes of aggregates (macroaggregates &gt;0.250 mm and microaggregates &lt;0.250 mm) were determined. The cumulative N2O emissions were larger in the CC‐CT system, intermediate in the CC‐NT and CLS‐NT systems, and smaller in the Cerrado. The decomposition of crop residues during the crop succession (first and second crop seasons) and the presence of a grass forage (with grazing and not grazed) in both systems (CLS‐NT and CC‐NT, respectively) explain the differences in N2O fluxes between the land uses. Smaller cumulative N2O emissions were observed in the integrated system (CLS‐NT), which could be attributed to the greatest increase in soil C in its most stable SOM fractions (fulvic acid) and occlusion in microaggregates. This confirms the hypothesis that the accumulation of C in the most stable SOM fractions of the soil, unavailable to the microbiota, results in smaller N2O emissions. Principal component analysis also revealed that aggregation is a key attribute that correlates with soil N2O emissions. Soil organic matter composition as a factor affecting the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

PurposeThe objective of this study was to evaluate the mutual relations between the soil organic matter (SOM) fractions: fulvic acids (FA), humic acids (HA), humins (HN), black carbon (BC) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) accumulation level in agricultural soils influenced by historical and actual anthropopressure. The research allowed to indicate which fractions of SOM are the major sequestration sinks for PAHs after they are naturally introduced into the soil.Materials and methodsSoil samples were collected from the upper layer of agricultural soils (n = 41), and basic physicochemical properties (pHKCl, total carbon, total nitrogen and clay content) were determined. The SOM was characterised by the total organic carbon content and humic substances, including HA, FA and HN, determined by an adapted method recommended by the International Humic Substances Society. The extracts of HA and FA were analysed for carbon content using a liquid CN analyser, while HN constituted the soil carbon in the residue after FA and HA extraction. The content of BC was analysed by dry combustion at 375 °C for 24 h (CTO375); the remaining carbon was determined via combustion in an elemental analyser.Results and discussionIn all soils, significant positive relations between PAH concentrations and TOC content (r = 0.73, p < 0.001) as well as HN (r = 0.71, p < 0.001) and BC (r = 0.86, p < 0.001) were noted. Relations among PAHs, HN and BC were statistically significant only in soils with TOC content ≥ 12 g kg−1, while they were not observed for soils with TOC content < 12 g kg−1. The links between HN and PAHs were stronger for low-molecular (two and three rings)-weight PAHs (r = 0.77, p < 0.05) than for high-molecular (≥ four rings) PAHs (r = 0.68, p < 0.05). Contrary to HN, the BC faction showed higher correlations with high-molecular-weight PAHs (r = 0.92, p < 0.001). FA and HA showed no significant relationship with hydrocarbons.ConclusionsDifferent SOM fractions might possess divergent binding capabilities and dissimilar binding strengths to PAHs. The different proportions and sorption capacities of BC and HN in relation to PAHs of different molecular weight are the result of varying structure, i.e. polar and non-polar functionalities in sorption domains and pore-size structures of these fractions. The high correlation between BC and higher-molecular PAHs may be a result of their co-emission, while the stronger relationships between HN and lower-molecular PAHs are directly related to their higher mobility and easier diffusion to stable SOM fractions.

Labile and stable pools of organic matter in soil amended with sewage sludge biochar

ABSTRACTOne of the main advantages of using biochar for agricultural purposes is its ability to store carbon (C) in soil for a long-term. Studies of labile and stable fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) may be a good indicator of the dynamics of biochar in soils. This study evaluated the effects of applying sewage sludge biochar (SSB) in combination with mineral fertilizer on fractions of SOM. To conduct this evaluation, 15 Mg ha−1 of SSB combined or not with mineral fertilizer (NPK) was applied to the soil in two cropping seasons. Apart from total organic C (TOC), the labile and stable fractions of SOM were also determined. The combined use of SSB and NPK resulted in higher TOC, a 22% to 40% increase compared to the control and to the NPK treatments, respectively. The SSB produced at a lower temperature increased the labile fractions of SOM, especially the microbial biomass C, showing its capacity to supply nutrients in the short-term. The stable pools of SOM are increased after adding SSB produced at a higher temperature. It was concluded that pyrolysis temperature is a key-factor that determines the potential of SSB to accumulate C in labile and stable fractions of SOM.

Soil organic matter pools under management systems in Quilombola Territory in Brazilian Cerrado

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the stable and labile fractions of soil organic matter and carbon (C) management index in cultivated areas with conservation and conventional management used by Quilombola farmers in the Goiás state, Brazil. The management systems were studied in the areas of Cerradão: Native Cerrado; Pasture; Conventional grain cultivation; Conservation cultivation of perennial crop; and in the sensu stricto Cerrado: Native Cerrado; Natural pasture; Conventional grain cultivation; Conventional cultivation of perennial crop. The study was considered as observational, with five replicates. Total organic C, fractions of humic substances, labile C and C management index were determined. The Cerradão phytophysiognomy had the highest total organic C values and stable soil organic matter fractions. The native areas had low levels of labile C. The conservation cultivation of perennial crop showed the largest accumulation of total organic C in the different fractions of soil organic matter and the highest rates of C management index.

No isotopic evidence for a differential mineralization of old soil organic matter in sandy, nutrient-poor, tropical soils under eucalypts and acacias

An increase in soil N availability by Acacia mangium in pure or mixed-species stands may reduce soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization compared to eucalypt stands. We measured the isotope composition (δ13C) of coarse particulate organic matter (cPOM, 4–0.25 mm), of fine POM (fPOM, 0.25–0.05 mm) and of the remaining organo-mineral fraction (OMF, <0.05 mm), and of the forest floor in plantations established on a tropical C4-grass savannah. In contrast to our hypothesis, the presence of acacia either alone or in mixture did not impact δ13C of the most stable SOM fractions derived from the previous savannah vegetation, which suggests similar rates of native SOM mineralization under acacia and eucalypt trees.

High quality residues from cover crops favor changes in microbial community and enhance C and N sequestration

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a change in management on the soil microbial community and C sequestration. We conducted a 3-year field study in La Pampa (Argentina) with rotation of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) in zero tillage alternating with rye (Secale cereale) and vetch (Vicia villosa ssp. dasycarpa). Soil was sampled once a year at two depths. Soil organic matter fractions, dissolved organic matter, microbial biomass (MBC) and community composition (DNA extraction, qPCR, and phospholipid FAME profiles) were determined. Litter, aerial- and root biomass were collected and all material was analyzed for C and N. Results showed a rapid response of microbial biomass to a bacterial dominance independent of residue quality. Vetch had the highest diversity index, while the fertilized treatment had the lowest one. Vetch–sorghum rotation with high N mineralization rates and diverse microbial community sequestered more C and N in stable soil organic matter fractions than no-till sorghum alone or with rye, which had lower N turnover rates. These results reaffirm the importance of enhanced soil biodiversity for maintaining soil ecosystem functioning and services. The supply of high amounts of N-rich residues as provided by grass–legume cover crops could fulfill this objective.

The influence of C&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;3&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; and C&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;4&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; vegetation on soil organic matter dynamics in contrasting semi-natural tropical ecosystems

Abstract. Variations in the carbon isotopic composition of soil organic matter (SOM) in bulk and fractionated samples were used to assess the influence of C3 and C4 vegetation on SOM dynamics in semi-natural tropical ecosystems sampled along a precipitation gradient in West Africa. Differential patterns in SOM dynamics in C3/C4 mixed ecosystems occurred at various spatial scales. Relative changes in C / N ratios between two contrasting SOM fractions were used to evaluate potential site-scale differences in SOM dynamics between C3- and C4-dominated locations. These differences were strongly controlled by soil texture across the precipitation gradient, with a function driven by bulk δ13C and sand content explaining 0.63 of the observed variability. The variation of δ13C with soil depth indicated a greater accumulation of C3-derived carbon with increasing precipitation, with this trend also being strongly dependant on soil characteristics. The influence of vegetation thickening on SOM dynamics was also assessed in two adjacent, but structurally contrasting, transitional ecosystems occurring on comparable soils to minimise the confounding effects posed by climatic and edaphic factors. Radiocarbon analyses of sand-size aggregates yielded relatively short mean residence times (τ) even in deep soil layers, while the most stable SOM fraction associated with silt and clay exhibited shorter τ in the savanna woodland than in the neighbouring forest stand. These results, together with the vertical variation observed in δ13C values, strongly suggest that both ecosystems are undergoing a rapid transition towards denser closed canopy formations. However, vegetation thickening varied in intensity at each site and exerted contrasting effects on SOM dynamics. This study shows that the interdependence between biotic and abiotic factors ultimately determine whether SOM dynamics of C3- and C4-derived vegetation are at variance in ecosystems where both vegetation types coexist. The results highlight the far-reaching implications that vegetation thickening may have for the stability of deep SOM.

Management Impacts on Soil Organic Matter of Tropical Soils

Increased soil organic matter (SOM) improves the cation exchange capacity of tropical weathered soils, and liming is required to achieve high yields in these soils. Despite a decrease in SOM in the short term, liming may increase SOM with time by improving cation chemical bonds with soil colloids. Soil C may also be increased in high dry matter input cropping systems. We evaluated C changes in a Typic Rhodudalf as affected by four production systems with increasing residue inputs, with or without limestone or silicate. Soil use intensification by increasing the number of species in rotation as well as acidity remediation resulted in higher plant residue production. Introducing a green manure or a second crop in the system increased plant residue by 89% over fallow, but when a forage crop was used, plant residues more than doubled. Soil acidity amelioration increased plant residue deposition by 21% over the control. The introduction of a forage crop increased labile SOM and C contents in the particulate fraction, and lime or silicate application led to increases in the more stable SOM fraction. High amounts of plant residues (>70 Mg ha−1 in 5 yr) are effective in raising soil labile C, but the alleviation of soil acidity results in increased soil stable C irrespective of crop rotations in tropical weathered soils, and in this case plant residue deposition can be lower. Lime and silicate are equally effective in alleviating soil acidity and increasing soil C, probably due to the formation of cation bridges with soil colloids.

Litter type control on soil C and N stabilization dynamics in a temperate forest.

While plant litters are the main source of soil organic matter (SOM) in forests, the controllers and pathways to stable SOM formation remain unclear. Here, we address how litter type ((13) C/(15) N-labeled needles vs. fine roots) and placement-depth (O vs. A horizon) affect in situ C and N dynamics in a temperate forest soil after 5years. Litter type rather than placement-depth controlled soil C and N retention after 5years in situ, with belowground fine root inputs greatly enhancing soil C (x1.4) and N (x1.2) retention compared with aboveground needles. While the proportions of added needle and fine root-derived C and N recovered into stable SOM fractions were similar, they followed different transformation pathways into stable SOM fractions: fine root transfer was slower than for needles, but proportionally more of the remaining needle-derived C and N was transferred into stable SOM fractions. The stoichiometry of litter-derived C vs. N within individual SOM fractions revealed the presence at least two pools of different turnover times (per SOM fraction) and emphasized the role of N-rich compounds for long-term persistence. Finally, a regression approach suggested that models may underestimate soil C retention from litter with fast decomposition rates.

Distribution of Radiocarbon Ages in Soil Organic Matter by Thermal Fractionation

Radiocarbon analysis is an important tool in quantifying soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics within the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, there is increasing appreciation that representing SOM as a single, homogeneous pool with a single, mean 14C concentration is inadequate. We investigate whether the differing patterns in CO2 release during ramped-temperature oxidation reflect organic matter of different ages, and hypothesize that thermally labile SOM (combusting at low temperatures) consists of younger carbon than thermally resistant organic matter. Topsoil samples under contrasting land uses (native vegetation and long-term cultivation) were selected for 14C analysis before and after acid fumigation for the removal of carbonates. Results of bulk 14C analyses showed a significant shift in 14C age from 0.944 Fm under native vegetation to 0.790 Fm under cultivation. Four to 5 “fractions” associated with different CO2-evolution regions were identified by thermal analysis and analyzed for 14C via modifications to NOSAMS' established “programmed temperature pyrolysis system,” in which discrete CO2 fractions evolved during ramped-temperature oxidation were isotopically characterized by a microwave gas ion source (GIS) continuous-flow AMS (CFAMS) system. Results showed that while acid fumigation removed soil carbonates, the treatment also significantly altered the thermograms and inferred SOM composition. While direct attribution of 14C values to individual peaks is somewhat confounded by overlapping temperature ranges for oxidation of unique populations of carbon, in general, thermally stable fractions of SOM appear to be 14C-depleted compared to thermally reactive (low temperature) fractions regardless of pretreatment.

Topsoil samples under contrasting land uses (native vegetation and long-term cultivation) were selected for 14C analysis before and after acid fumigation for the removal of carbonates. Results of bulk 14C analyses showed a significant shift in 14C age from 0.944 Fm under native vegetation to 0.790 Fm under cultivation. Four to 5 “fractions” associated with different CO2-evolution regions were identified by thermal analysis and analyzed for 14C via modifications to NOSAMS' established “programmed temperature pyrolysis system,” in which discrete CO2 fractions evolved during ramped-temperature oxidation were isotopically characterized by a microwave gas ion source (GIS) continuous-flow AMS (CFAMS) system. Results showed that while acid fumigation removed soil carbonates, the treatment also significantly altered the thermograms and inferred SOM composition. While direct attribution of 14C values to individual peaks is somewhat confounded by overlapping temperature ranges for oxidation of unique populations of carbon, in general, thermally stable fractions of SOM appear to be 14C-depleted compared to thermally reactive (low temperature) fractions regardless of pretreatment.

Charcoal and stable soil organic matter as indicators of fire frequency, climate and past vegetation in volcanic soils of Mt. Etna, Sicily

Charcoal fragments in soils are useful to reconstruct past vegetation because the level of preservation is often good enough to determine the tree genus. All forest ecosystems have the potential to burn as a result of naturally occurring or human-induced fires. Forest fires are coupled to climate and are a not-negligible factor of pedogenesis in Mediterranean areas, where they occur frequently. Furthermore, soil organic matter (SOM) is prone to undergo peculiar changes due to forest fires, both in terms of quantity and quality. A soil sequence along an elevational gradient ranging from Mediterranean to subalpine climate zones on slopes of Mt. Etna (Sicily, Italy) was investigated in respect of soil organic C and charcoal. The amount of charcoal and the identification of charred species gave an indication of the fire frequency and vegetation changes that have occurred in the past. The distribution into labile and stable organic fractions provided insight into the stabilisation and turnover mechanisms of SOM. The stable organic matter fraction was measured as the residue of a H2O2 treatment. The soils along the altitudinal sequence are variations of Vitric Andosols that developed on a single trachy-basaltic lava flow having an age of 10–15 ky BP. Maquis vegetation dominates at the lower sites of the toposequence, followed by oak- and chestnut-forests at mid elevations, and pine-forest at the highest-elevated sites. Charcoals are older at higher elevations (ages of up to 1.5 ky cal BP). Here, the vegetation type has not changed over the last > 1000 years, as all charcoal pieces were identified as Pinus nigra. Charred material at the lower sites could be identified as particles of deciduous shrubs, Quercus, Castanea sativa, Lonicera implexa and Cytisus spp. with mostly a modern age up to about 300 y cal BP. A similar finding was obtained for the stable (H2O2 resistant) SOM. Very high ages for this fraction were found at the highest elevations where it had an age of up to 8.2 ky BP — an age that is close to the start of soil formation. At the lower sites, where frequent bush fires often destroyed a part of the stable fraction, the stable SOM fraction had a maximum age of 1 ky. The studied soils have recorded the signals of the interrelated factors fire frequency, climatic effects and vegetation whose role cannot always be clearly distinguished. With decreasing altitude and with a warmer climate, vegetation changes and fire frequency, org. C and especially nitrogen abundance and the amount of labile SOM increases. At the lower sites, charcoal particles reflect the more recent vegetation probably because the repeated fires here hindered their preservation. Our findings hence suggest that a high fire frequency is a powerful rejuvenating factor for soil organic matter, removing part of the old SOM and promoting plant recolonisation that is a source of young SOM. Fire frequency and intensity on Mt. Etna is, however, moderate enough even at the lowest altitudes for the organic matter pool to be high and not depleted.

Carbon stock and its compartments in a subtropical oxisol under long-term tillage and crop rotation systems

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a crucial role in soil quality and can act as an atmospheric C-CO2 sink under conservationist management systems. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects (19 years) of tillage (CT-conventional tillage and NT-no tillage) and crop rotations (R0-monoculture system, R1-winter crop rotation, and R2- intensive crop rotation) on total, particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon (C) stocks of an originally degraded Red Oxisol in Cruz Alta, RS, Southern Brazil. The climate is humid subtropical Cfa 2a (Köppen classification), the mean annual precipitation 1,774 mm and mean annual temperature 19.2 ºC. The plots were divided into four segments, of which each was sampled in the layers 0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20, and 0.20-0.30 m. Sampling was performed manually by opening small trenches. The SOM pools were determined by physical fractionation. Soil C stocks had a linear relationship with annual crop C inputs, regardless of the tillage systems. Thus, soil disturbance had a minor effect on SOM turnover. In the 0-0.30 m layer, soil C sequestration ranged from 0 to 0.51 Mg ha-1 yr-1, using the CT R0 treatment as base-line; crop rotation systems had more influence on soil stock C than tillage systems. The mean C sequestration rate of the cropping systems was 0.13 Mg ha-1 yr-1 higher in NT than CT. This result was associated to the higher C input by crops due to the improvement in soil quality under long-term no-tillage. The particulate C fraction was a sensitive indicator of soil management quality, while mineral-associated organic C was the main pool of atmospheric C fixed in this clayey Oxisol. The C retention in this stable SOM fraction accounts for 81 and 89 % of total C sequestration in the treatments NT R1 and NT R2, respectively, in relation to the same cropping systems under CT. The highest C management index was observed in NT R2, confirming the capacity of this soil management practice to improve the soil C stock qualitatively in relation to CT R0. The results highlighted the diversification of crop rotation with cover crops as a crucial strategy for atmospheric C-CO2 sequestration and SOM quality improvement in highly weathered subtropical Oxisols.

Soil organic matter fractionation as a tool for predicting nitrogen mineralization in silty arable soils

After decades of searching for a practical method to estimate the N mineralization capacity of soil, there is still no consistent methodology. Indeed it is important to have practical methods to estimate soil nitrogen release for plant uptake and that should be appropriate, less time consuming, and cost effective for farmers. We fractionated soil organic matter (SOM) to assess different fractions of SOM as predictors for net N mineralization measured from repacked (disturbed) and intact (undisturbed) soil cores in 14 weeks of laboratory incubations. A soil set consisting of surface soil from 18 cereal and root-cropped arable fields was physically fractionated into coarse and fine free particulate OM (coarse fPOM and fine fPOM), intra-microaggregate particulate OM (iPOM) and silt and clay sized OM. The silt and clay sized OM was further chemically fractionated by oxidation with 6% NaOCl to isolate an oxidation-resistant OM fraction, followed by extraction of mineral bound OM with 10% HF (HF-res OM). Stepwise multiple linear regression yielded a significant relationship between the annual N mineralization (kg N/ha) from undisturbed soil and coarse fPOM N (kg N/ha), silt and clay N (kg N/ha) and its C:N ratio (R2 = 0.80; P < 0.01). The relative annual N mineralization (% of soil N) from disturbed soils was related to coarse fPOM N, HF-res OC (% of soil organic carbon) and its C:N ratio (R2 = 0.83; P < 0.01). Physical fractions of SOM were thus found to be the most useful predictors for estimating the annual N mineralization rate of undisturbed soils. However, the bioavailability of physical fractions was changed due to the disturbance of soil. For disturbed soils, a presumed stable chemical SOM fraction was found to be a relevant predictor indicating that this fraction still contains bio-available N. The latter prompted a revision in our reasoning behind selective oxidation and extraction as tools for characterizing soil organic N quality with respect to N availability. Nonetheless, the present study also underscores the potential of a combined physical and chemical fractionation procedure for isolating and quantifying N fractions which preferentially contribute to bulk soil N mineralization. The N content or C:N ratio of such fractions may be used to predict N mineralization in arable soils.
