CO2-Based Stable Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Utilization.

The transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into functional materials has garnered considerable worldwide interest. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a distinctive class of materials, have made great contributions to CO2 capture and conversion. However, facile conversion of CO2 to stable porous MOFs for CO2 utilization remains unexplored. Herein, we present a facile methodology of using CO2 to synthesize stable zirconium-based MOFs. Two zirconium-based MOFs CO2-Zr-DEP and CO2-Zr-DEDP with face-centered cubic topology were obtained via a sequential desilylation-carboxylation-coordination reaction. The MOFs exhibit excellent crystallinity, as verified through powder X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses. They also have notable porosity with high surface area (SBET up to 3688 m2 g-1) and good CO2 adsorption capacity (up to 12.5 wt %). The resulting MOFs have abundant alkyne functional moieties, confirmed through 13C cross-polarization/magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Leveraging the catalytic prowess of Ag(I) in diverse CO2-involved reactions, we incorporated Ag(I) into zirconium-based MOFs, capitalizing on their interactions with carbon-carbon π-bonds of alkynes, thereby forming a heterogeneous catalyst. This catalyst demonstrates outstanding efficiency in catalyzing the conversion of CO2 and propargylic alcohols into cyclic carbonates, achieving >99% yield at room temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions. Thus, this work provides a dual CO2 utilization strategy, encompassing the synthesis of CO2-based MOFs (20-24 wt % from CO2) and their subsequent application in CO2 capture and conversion processes. This approach significantly enhances overall CO2 utilization.

Tailored Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification: Perfluorinated Fe-MOFs for Enhanced Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation.

An industrially viable catalyst for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) in water purification requires the characteristics of good dispersion of active species on its surface, efficient electron transfer for ozone decay, and maximum active species utilization. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an attractive platform for HCO, the metal nodes in the unmodified MOFs exhibit low catalytic activity. Herein, we present a perfluorinated Fe-MOF catalyst by substituting H atoms on the metalated ligands with F atoms (termed 4F-MIL-88B) to induce structure evolution. The Lewis acidity of 4F-MIL-88B was enhanced via the formation of Fe nodes, tailoring the electron distribution on the catalyst surface. As a result of catalyst modification, the rate constant for degradation of the target compounds examined increased by ∼700% compared with that observed for the unmodified catalyst. Experimental evidence and theoretical calculations showed that the modulated polarity and the enhanced electron transfer between the catalyst and ozone molecules contributed to the adsorption and transformation of O3 to •OH on the catalyst surface. Overall, the results of this study highlight the significance of tailoring the metalated ligands to develop highly efficient and stable MOF catalysts for HCO and provide an in-depth mechanistic understanding of their structure-function evolution, which is expected to facilitate the applications of nanomaterial-based processes in water purification.

Fabrication of Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Selective Extraction of Dibutyl Phthalates in Food Matrices.

In this study, a novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymeric material (Fe3O4@MOF@MIP-160) with a metal-organic backbone (Fe3O4@MOF) carrier was prepared using dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as a template. The material can be used for the efficient, rapid, and selective extraction of trace amounts of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in food and can detect them via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The synthesis conditions of the materials were optimized to prepare the Fe3O4@MOF@MIP160 with the highest adsorption performance. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (FT-IR), Vibration Sample Magnetic (VSM), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method were used to characterize the materials. Compared with Fe3O4@MOF and the magnetic non-imprinted polymeric material (Fe3O4@MOF@NIP), Fe3O4@MOF@MIP-160 possesses the advantages of easy and rapid manipulation of magnetic materials, the advantages of high specific surface area and the stability of metal-organic frameworks, and the advantages of high selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymers. Fe3O4@MOF@MIP-160 has good recognition and adsorption capacity for di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP): the adsorption capacity for DBP and DEHP is 260 mg·g-1 and 240.2 mg·g-1, and the adsorption rate is fast (reaching equilibrium in about 20 min). Additionally, Fe3O4@MOF@MIP160 could be recycled six times, making it cost-effective, easy to operate, and time-saving as compared to traditional solid-phase extraction materials. The phthalate ester content in drinking water, fruit juice, and white wine was analyzed, with recoveries ranging from 70.3% to 100.7%. This proved that Fe3O4@MOF@MIP160 was suitable for detecting and removing PAEs from food matrices.

Coupled one-pot oxidative extractive desulfurization of a model fuel catalyzed by nanostructured-ZIF-67/Biomass-derived activated carbon composite

The simultaneous oxidation and extraction of refractory sulfur compounds, such as DBT, has emerged as one of the most efficient complementary procedures for the HDS process in achieving ultradeep desulfurization of fuels. In this paper, a bio-based activated carbon (AC) obtained from the waste of date palm bark has been utilized as an abundant, green, and low-cost support for synthesizing a stable metal-organic framework, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), on its structure to reach a novel nanocomposite catalyst (AC/ZIF-67) for the removal of DBT from a model fuel through the extractive oxidative desulfurization method. The accuracy of the AC/ZIF-67 catalyst formation was comprehensively characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, BET, and TGA analytical techniques. Subsequently, the newly synthesized nanocomposite catalyst was employed efficiently for removing DBT from a toluene solution, acting as a model fuel. The impact of various operating variables, i.e. catalyst dosage, the temperature of reaction, oxidant-to-sulfur (O/S) molar ratio, contact time, initial concentration of DBT, and volume of extraction solvent on the removal efficiency has been thoroughly investigated. The results revealed that employing only 25 mg of the AC/ZIF-67 catalyst could achieve a remarkably high efficiency of around 98 % after one hour oxidation of a 25 ppm DBT solution in the presence of TBHP, followed by extraction using acetonitrile. This was achieved while maintaining a constant temperature of 60 °C and an O/S ratio of 20. The obtained results confirm the potential application of ACs for supporting MOF catalysts in various catalytic processes such as desulfurization.

Recent Advances in Catalytic Compounds Developed by Thermal Treatment of (Zr-Based) Metal–Organic Frameworks

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been the subject of extensive scientific investigation in the last three decades and, currently, they make up one of the types of compounds most studied for their potential application in a wide range of distinct catalytic processes. Pristine MOF compounds provide several intriguing benefits for catalytic applications, including large interior surface areas and high densities of active sites; high catalytic reaction rates per volume; post-synthesis modifications with complementary catalytic groups; and the ability for multiple functional groups to catalyze the reaction. For most large-scale catalytic applications, including those in fuel processing, gas emission reduction, and chemical synthesis, pristine MOFs often show limited stabilities and opportunities for regeneration at high temperatures. As a result, the real applications of MOFs in these technologies are likely to be constrained, and a controlled thermal modification to prepare MOF-derivative compounds has been applied to induce crystalline structural changes and increase the structural stability of the MOFs, enhancing their potential applicability in more severe catalytic processes. Recent advances concerning the use of this strategy to boost the catalytic potential of MOF-derivative compounds, particularly for stable Zr-based MOFs, are outlined in this short review article.

Variation in Catalytic Efficacies of a 2D pH-Stable MOF by Altering Activation Methods.

Although it is well-known that the Lewis acidity of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can effectively enhance their catalytic activity in organic transformations, access to these Lewis-acidic sites remains a key hurdle to widespread applications of Lewis-acidic catalysis by MOFs. Easy accessibility of strong Lewis acidic sites onto 2D MOFs by using proper activation methods can be a cornerstone in attaining desired catalytic performance. Herein, we report a new 2D chemically stable MOF, IITKGP-60, which displayed excellent framework robustness over a wide pH range (2-12). Benefiting from the abundant open metal sites (OMSs) and framework robustness, the catalytic activity of the developed material was explored in one-pot three-component Strecker reaction and Knoevenagel condensation reaction. Moreover, the developed catalyst is superior in catalyzing the reactions involving sterically hindered substrate (1-naphthaldehyde) with high turnover number. A comparative catalytic study was conducted using different activation methods (chloroform and methanol exchanged activated samples), highlighting the significant effect of activation methods on its catalytic performances. The sustainable synthetic pathway under solvent-free conditions for a broad scope of substrates using low catalyst loading and excellent recyclability made the developed pH-stable framework a promising heterogeneous catalyst.

Enhancing Drug Delivery Efficacy Through Bilayer Coating of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Sustained Release and Improved Chemical Stability and Cellular Uptake for Cancer Therapy.

The development of nanoparticle (NP)-based drug carriers has presented an exciting opportunity to address challenges in oncology. Among the 100,000 available possibilities, zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates in biomedical applications. Zr-MOFs can be easily synthesized as small-size NPs compatible with intravenous injection, whereas the ease of decorating their external surfaces with functional groups allows for targeted treatment. Despite these benefits, Zr-MOFs suffer degradation and aggregation in real, in vivo conditions, whereas the loaded drugs will suffer the burst effect-i.e., the fast release of drugs in less than 48 h. To tackle these issues, we developed a simple but effective bilayer coating strategy in a generic, two-step process. In this work, bilayer-coated MOF NU-901 remained well dispersed in biologically relevant fluids such as buffers and cell growth media. Additionally, the coating enhances the long-term stability of drug-loaded MOFs in water by simultaneously preventing sustained leakage of the drug and aggregation of the MOF particles. We evaluated our materials for the encapsulation and transport of pemetrexed, the standard-of-care chemotherapy in mesothelioma. The bilayer coating allowed for a slowed release of pemetrexed over 7 days, superior to the typical 48 h release found in bare MOFs. This slow release and the related performance were studied in vitro using both A549 lung cancer and 3T mesothelioma cells. Using high-resolution microscopy, we found the successful uptake of bilayer-coated MOFs by the cells with an accumulation in the lysosomes. The pemetrex-loaded NU-901 was indeed cytotoxic to 3T and A549 cancer cells. Finally, we demonstrated the general approach by extending the coating strategy using two additional lipids and four surfactants. This research highlights how a simple yet effective bilayer coating provides new insights into the design of promising MOF-based drug delivery systems.

Efficient Lead Removal by Assembly of Bio-Derived Ellagate Framework, Which Enables Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to Formate.

Lead (Pb) poisoning and CO2-induced global warming represent two exemplary environmental and energy issues threatening humanity. Various biomass-derived materials are reported to take up Pb and convert CO2 electrochemically into low-valent carbon species, but these works address the problems separately rather than settle the issues simultaneously. In this work, cheap, natural ellagic acid (EA) extracted from common plants is adopted to assemble a stable metal-organic framework (MOF), EA-Pb, by effective capture of Pb2+ ions in an aqueous medium (removal rate close to 99%). EA-Pb represents the first structurally well-defined Pb-based MOF showing selective electrocatalytic CO2-to-HCOO- conversion with Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.37% at -1.08V versus RHE. The catalytic mechanism is studied by 13CO2 labeling, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and theoretical calculation. The use of EA-Pb as an electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction represents a 2-in-1 solution of converting detrimental wastes (Pb2+) as well as natural resources (EA) into wealth (electrocatalytic EA-Pb) for addressing the global warming issue.

A Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Framework with Cooperative Adsorption Domains for PFAS Removal from Water.

The removal of toxic poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as persistent pollutants from wastewater is imperative but challenging for water remediation. Many adsorbents including activated carbon, biochar, and clay minerals have been investigated for PFAS removal, but most of these materials are faced with high cost or/and low efficiency. The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents is attractive for efficient removal of PFAS due to their tailor-made structures and high surface areas. Herein, we synthesized, characterized a water stable Zr-based porphyrinic MOF (PCN-224) with cooperative adsorption domains, and demonstrated its excellent capture performance toward perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). PCN-224 has maximum uptake capacities of 963, 517, and 395 mg g-1 for PFOS, PFHxS, and PFBS, respectively, which are much higher than that of granular activated carbon. Moreover, coexistent anions (Cl-, SO4 2-) and humic acid have negligible effects on PFOS adsorption. The excellent adsorption performance of PCN-224 toward PFOS is due to the orthogonal cationic channel pores with a diameter of 1.9 nm, the hydrophobic porphyrin units, and the Zr6 clusters with acidic sites. PCN-224 can be readily regenerated and reused. This work highlights the potential of MOFs with multiple adsorption domains for water remediation.

Design and Machine Learning Prediction of In Situ Grown PDA-Stabilized MOF (UiO-66-NH2) Membrane for Low-Pressure Separation of Emulsified Oily Wastewater.

Significant progress has been made in designing advanced membranes; however, persistent challenges remain due to their reduced permeation rates and a propensity for substantial fouling. These factors continue to pose significant barriers to the effective utilization of membranes in the separation of oil-in-water emulsions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered promising materials for such applications; however, they encounter three key challenges when applied to the separation of oil from water: (a) lack of water stability; (b) difficulty in producing defect-free membranes; and (c) unresolved issue of stabilizing the MOF separating layer on the ceramic membrane (CM) support. In this study, a defect-free hydrolytically stable zirconium-based MOF separating layer was formed through a two-step method: first, by in situ growth of UiO-66-NH2 MOF into the voids of polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized CM during the solvothermal process, and then by facilitating the self-assembly of UiO-66-NH2 with PDA using a pressurized dead-end assembly. A stable MOF separating layer was attained by enriching the ceramic support with amines and hydroxyl groups using PDA, which assisted in the assembly and stabilization of UiO-66-NH2. The PDA-s-UiO-66-NH2-CM membrane displayed air superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, demonstrating its oil resistance and high antifouling behavior. The PDA-s-UiO-66-NH2-CM membrane has shown exceptionally high permeability and separation capacity for challenging oil-in-water emulsions. This is attributed to numerous nanochannels from the membrane and its high resistance to oil adhesion. The membranes showed excellent stability over 15 continuous test cycles, which indicates that the developed MOFs separating layers have a low tendency to be clogged by oil droplets during separation. Machine learning-based Gaussian process regression (GPR) models as nonparametric kernel-based probabilistic models were employed to predict the performance efficiency of the PDA-s-UiO-66-NH2-CM membrane in oil-in-water separation. The outcomes were compared with the support vector machine (SVM) and decision tree (DT) algorithm. This efficiency includes various metrics related to its separation accuracy, and the models were developed through feature engineering to identify and utilize the most significant factors affecting the membrane's performance. The results proved the reliability of GPR optimization with the highest prediction accuracy in the validation phase. The average percentage increase of the GPR model compared to the SVM and DT model was 6.11 and 42.94%, respectively.

Exploring the Role of Ligand Connectivity in MOFs Mechanical Stability: The Case of MIL-100(Cr).

The key parameters governing the mechanical stability of highly porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are yet to be clearly understood. This study focuses on the role of the linker connectivity by investigating the mechanical stability of MIL-100(Cr), a mesoporous MOF with a hierarchical structure and a tritopic linker, and comparing it to MIL-101(Cr) having instead a ditopic linker. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the high-pressure behavior of MIL-100(Cr) with both solid and fluid pressure transmitting media (PTM). In the case of a solid medium, MIL-100(Cr) undergoes amorphization at about 0.6 GPa, while silicone oil as a PTM delays amorphization until 12 GPa due to the fluid penetration into the pores. Both of these values are considerably higher than those of MIL-101(Cr). MIL-100(Cr) also exhibits a bulk modulus almost ten times larger than that of MIL-101(Cr). This set of results coherently proves the superior stability of MIL-100(Cr) under compression. We ascribe this to the higher connectivity of the organic linker in MIL-100(Cr), which enhances its interconnection between the metal nodes. These findings shed light on the importance of linker connectivity in the mechanical stability of MOFs, a relevant contribution to the quest for designing more robust MOFs.

One-Step Purification and Immobilization of Glycosyltransferase with Zn-Ni MOF for the Synthesis of Rare Ginsenoside Rh2.

Uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucosyltransferases (UGTs) have received increasing attention in the field of ginsenoside Rh2 conversion. By harnessing the metal chelation between transition metal ions and imidazole groups present on His-tagged enzymes, a specific immobilization of the enzyme within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is achieved. This innovative approach not only enhances the stability and reusability of the enzyme but also enables one-step purification and immobilization. Consequently, the need for purifying crude enzyme solutions is effectively circumvented, resulting in significant cost savings during experimentation. The use of immobilized enzymes in catalytic reactions has shown great potential for achieving higher conversion rates of ginsenoside Rh2. In this study, highly stable mesoporous Zn-Ni MOF materials were synthesized at 150 °C by a solvothermal method. The UGT immobilized on the Zn-Ni MOF (referred to as UGT@Zn-Ni MOF) exhibited superior pH adaptability and thermal stability, retaining approximately 76% of its initial activity even after undergoing 7 cycles. Furthermore, the relative activity of the immobilized enzyme remained at an impressive 80.22% even after 45 days of storage. The strong specific adsorption property of Zn-Ni MOF on His-tagged UGT was confirmed through analysis using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. UGT@Zn-Ni MOF was used to catalyze the conversion reaction, and the concentration of rare ginsenoside Rh2 was generated at 3.15 μg/mL. The results showed that Zn-Ni MOF is a material that can efficiently purify and immobilize His-tagged enzyme in one step and has great potential for industrial applications in enzyme purification and ginsenoside synthesis.

Four Lanthanide(III) Metal-Organic Frameworks Fabricated by Bithiophene Dicarboxylate for High Inherent Proton Conduction.

Currently, it is still a challenge to directly achieve highly stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with superior proton conductivity solely through the exquisite design of ligands and the attentive selection of metal nodes. Inspired by this, we are intrigued by a multifunctional dicarboxylate ligand including dithiophene groups, 3,4-dimethylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2DTD), and lanthanide ions with distinct coordination topologies. Successfully, four isostructural three-dimensional lanthanide(III)-based MOFs, [Ln2(DTD)3(DEF)4]·DEF·6H2O [LnIII = TbIII (Tb-MOF), EuIII (Eu-MOF), SmIII (Sm-MOF), and DyIII (Dy-MOF)], were solvothermally prepared, in which the effective proton transport will be provided by the coordinated or free solvent molecules, the crystalline water molecules, and the framework components, as well as a large number of highly electronegative S and O atoms. As expected, the four Ln-MOFs demonstrated the highest proton conductivities (σ) being 0.54 × 10-3, 3.75 × 10-3, 1.28 × 10-3, and 1.92 × 10-3 S·cm-1 for the four MOFs, respectively, at 100 °C/98% relative humidity (RH). Excitingly, Dy-MOF demonstrated an extraordinary ultrahigh σ of 1 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 30 °C/98% RH. Additionally, the plausible proton transport mechanisms were emphasized.

CO2 photocatalytic reduction with robust and stable metal–organic framework: a review

AbstractClimate change and global warming problem are becoming the serious issue and some action is necessary in order to mitigate the rising temperature. CO2 increase is one of the reason for temperature rise, and the technology to convert CO2 to beneficial energy or chemical substance could be one of the key solution (CO2 photocatalytic reduction). Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained much attention owing to their extremely large surface areas, tunable fine structures, and potential applications in many areas. Recently, MOFs have been demonstrated to be promising materials for CO2 photocatalytic reduction. This review summarized recent research progresses in photocatalytic reduction using MOFs. MOFs were classified mainly by the type of metal center, and the feature and tendency against their functions towards CO2 photocatalytic activity will be explained.

Just Soaping Them: The Simplest Method for Converting Metal Organic Frameworks into Superhydrophobic Materials.

The incorporation of superhydrophobic properties into metal organic framework (MOF) materials is highly desirable to enhance their hydrolytic stability, gas capture selectivity in the presence of humidity and efficiency in oil-water separations, among others. The existing strategies for inducing superhydrophobicity into MOFs have several weaknesses, such as increased cost, utilization of toxic reagents and solvents, applicability for limited MOFs, etc. Here, we report the simplest, most eco-friendly, and cost-effective process to impart superhydrophobicity to MOFs, involving a rapid (90 min) treatment of MOF materials with solutions of sodium oleate, a main component of soap. The method can be applied to both hydrolytically stable and unstable MOFs, with the porosity of modified MOFs approaching, in most cases, that of the pristine materials. Interestingly, this approach was used to isolate superhydrophobic magnetic MOF composites, and one of these materials formed stable liquid marbles, whose motion could be easily guided using an external magnetic field. We also successfully fabricated superhydrophobic MOF-coated cotton fabric and fiber composites. These composites exhibited exceptional oil sorption properties achieving rapid removal of floating crude oil from water, as well as efficient purification of oil-in-water emulsions. They are also regenerable and reusable for multiple sorption processes. Overall, the results described here pave the way for an unprecedented expansion of the family of MOF-based superhydrophobic materials, as virtually any MOF could be converted into a superhydrophobic compound by applying the new synthetic approach.

Macro-manufacturing robust and stable metal-organic framework beads for antibiotics removal from wastewater

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great prospects in wastewater remediation. However, the easy aggregation, difficult separation and inferior reusability greatly limit their large-scale application. Herein, we proposed a facile, green and low-cost strategy to construct robust and stable MOF-based hydrogel beads (Fe-BTC-HBs) in a gram scale, and employed them to remove antibiotics from wastewater. As a result, the Fe-BTC-HBs demonstrated outstanding adsorption capacity for both ofloxacin (OFL) and tetracycline (TC) (281.17 mg/g for OFL and 223.60 mg/g for TC) under a near-neutral environment. The main adsorption mechanisms of OFL and TC were hydrogen bonding and π‐π stacking interaction. Owing to its macroscopic granule and stable structure, Fe-BTC-HBs can be separated rapidly from wastewater after capturing antibiotics, and more than 85% adsorption capacity still remained after six cycles, while the powdered Fe-BTC only showed less than 6% recovery efficiency with massive weight loss (around 92%). In real industrial effluent, the adsorption performance of Fe-BTC-HBs toward two antibiotics exhibited negligible decreases (2.9% for OFL and 2.2% for TC) compared with that in corresponding solutions. Furthermore, Fe-BTC-HBs also had appealing economic and environmental benefit. Overall, the macro-manufactured MOF beads have the promising potential for the large-scale wastewater treatment.

Probing Structural Defects in MOFs Using Water Stability.

Defects in the crystal structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), whether present intrinsically or introduced via so-called defect engineering, can play strong roles in the properties of MOFs for various applications. Unfortunately, direct experimental detection and characterization of defects in MOFs are very challenging. We show that in many cases, the differences between experimentally observed and computationally predicted water stabilities of MOFs can be used to deduce information on the presence of point defects in real materials. Most computational studies of MOFs consider these materials to be defect-free, and in many cases, the resulting structures are predicted to be hydrophobic. Systematic experimental studies, however, have shown that many MOFs are hydrophilic. We show that the existence of chemically plausible point defects can often account for this discrepancy and use this observation in combination with detailed molecular simulations to assess the impact of local defects and flexibility in a variety of MOFs for which defects had not been considered previously.

Computational screening and functional tuning of chemically stable metal organic frameworks for I2/CH3I capture in humid environments

High chemical stability is of vital significance in rendering metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as promising adsorbents for capturing leaked radioactive nuclides, under real nuclear industrial conditions with high humidity. In this work, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and density functional theory (DFT) methods have been employed to systematically evaluate I2/CH3I capture performances of 21 experimentally confirmed chemically stable MOFs in humid environments. Favorable structural factors and the influence of hydrophilicity for iodine capture were unveiled. Subsequently, the top-performing MIL-53-Al with flexible tunability was functionalized with different functional groups to achieve the better adsorption performance. It has been revealed that the adsorption affinity and pore volume were two major factors altered by the functionalization of polar functional groups, which collectively influenced the iodine adsorption properties. In general, this work has screened the chemically stable high-performance MOF iodine adsorbents and provided comprehensive insights into the key factors affecting I2/CH3I uptake and separation in humid environments.

Incorporating Two Crown Ether Struts into the Backbone of Robust Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Custom-Designed Efficient Collectors for Radioactive Metal Ions.

The incorporation of crown ether into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is garnered significant attention because these macrocyclic units can fine-tune the inherent properties of the frameworks. However, the synthesis of flexible crown ethers with precise structures as the fundamental building blocks of crystalline MOFs remains a challenging endeavor, with only a limited number of transition metal examples existing to date. Herein, 18-crown-6 and 24-crown-8 struts are successfully incorporated into the skeleton of zirconium-based MOFs to obtain two new and stable crown ether-based MOFs, denoted as ZJU-X100 and ZJU-X102. These newly developed MOFs displayed high porosity and remarkable stability when exposed to various solvents, boiling water, pH values, and even concentrated HCl conditions. Thanks to their highly ordered porous structure and high-density embedding of specific binding sites within tubular channels, these two MOFs exhibited extremely fast sorption kinetics and demonstrated outstanding performance in the uptake of strontium and cesium ions, respectively. Furthermore, the structures of Sr-adsorbed ZJU-X100 and Cs-adsorbed ZJU-X102 are solved and confirmed the precise location of Sr2+/Cs+ in the cavity of 18-crown-6/24-crown-8. This makes modular mosaic of different crown ethers into the skeleton of stable zirconium-based MOFs possible and promote such materials have broad applications in sorption, sensing, and catalysis.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Composites for the Adsorption Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from Water.

The increasing health risks posed by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the environment highlight the importance of implementing effective removal techniques. Conventional wastewater treatment processes are inadequate for removing persistent organic pollutants. Recent studies have increasingly demonstrated that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are capable of removing PFASs from water through adsorption techniques. However, there is still constructive discussion on the potential of MOFs in adsorbing and removing PFASs for large-scale engineering applications. This review systematically investigates the use of MOFs as adsorbents for the removal of PFAS in water treatment. This primarily involved a comprehensive analysis of existing literature to understand the adsorption mechanisms of MOFs and to identify factors that enhance their efficiency in removing PFASs. We also explore the critical aspects of regeneration and stability of MOFs, assessing their reusability and long-term performance, which are essential for large-scale water treatment applications. Finally, our study highlights the challenges of removing PFASs using MOFs. Especially, the efficient removal of short-chain PFASs with hydrophilicity is a major challenge, while medium- to long-chain PFASs are frequently susceptible to being captured from water by MOFs through multiple synergistic effects. The ion-exchange force may be the key to solving this difficulty, but its susceptibility to ion interference in water needs to be addressed in practical applications. We hope that this review can provide valuable insights into the effective removal and adsorption mechanisms of PFASs as well as advance the sustainable utilization of MOFs in the field of water treatment, thereby presenting a novel perspective.
