A tipping point in stable isotope composition of Antarctic meteoric waters during Cenozoic glaciation.

Triple oxygen isotopes of Cenozoic intrusive rocks emplaced along the Ross Sea coastline in Antarctica, reveal that meteoric-hydrothermal waters imprinted their stable isotope composition on mineral phases, leaving a clear record of oxygen and hydrogen isotope variations during the establishment of the polar cap. Calculated O- and H-isotope compositions of meteoric waters vary from -9 ± 2‰ and -92 ± 5‰ at 40 ± 0.6 Ma, to -30 and -234 ± 5‰ at 34 ± 1.9 Ma, and intersect the modern Global Meteoric Water Line. These isotopic variations likely depict the combined variations in temperature, humidity, and moisture source regions, resulting from rearrangement of oceanic currents and atmospheric cooling during the onset of continental ice cap. Here, we report a paleo-climatic proxy based on triple oxygen geochemistry of crystalline rocks that reveals changes in the hydrological cycle. We discuss the magnitude of temperature changes at high latitudes during the Eocene-Oligocene climatic transition.

Spatial and temporal stable water isotope data from the upper snowpack at the EastGRIP camp site, NE Greenland, sampled in summer 2018

Abstract. Stable water isotopes stored in snow, firn and ice are used to reconstruct climatic parameters. The imprint of these parameters at the snow surface and their preservation in the upper snowpack are determined by a number of processes influencing the recording of the environmental signal. Here, we present a dataset of approximately 3800 snow samples analysed for their stable water isotope composition, which were obtained during the summer season next to the deep drilling site of the East Greenland Ice Core Project in northeast Greenland (75.635411° N, 36.000250° W). Sampling was carried out every third day between 14 May and 3 August 2018 along a 39 m long transect. Three depth intervals in the top 10 cm were sampled at 30 positions with a higher resolution closer to the surface (0–1 and 1–4 cm depth vs. 4–10 cm). The sample analysis was carried out at two renowned stable water isotope laboratories that produced isotope data with the overall highest uncertainty of 0.09 ‰ for δ18O and 0.8 ‰ for δD. This unique dataset shows the strongest δ18O variability closest to the surface, damped and delayed variations in the lowest layer, and a trend towards increasing homogeneity towards the end of the season, especially in the deepest layer. Additional information on the snow height and its temporal changes suggests a non-uniform spatial imprint of the seasonal climatic information in this area, potentially following the stratigraphic noise of the surface. The data can be used to study the relation between snow height (changes) and the imprint and preservation of the isotopic composition at a site with 10–14 cm w.e. yr−1 accumulation. The high-temporal-resolution sampling allows additional analyses on (post-)depositional processes, such as vapour–snow exchange. Stable Isotopes Constrain Water Seepage From Gnammas Into Bare Granitic Bedrock

AbstractSubtle bedrock depressions called gnammas allow the water in ephemeral pools to maintain contact with bare rock, thus serving as natural rock‐weathering experiments. Following filling by precipitation, evaporation is often assumed to be the sole process of water loss from gnammas. We evaluated this assumption by monitoring evolving stable isotope compositions of gnamma waters hosted in granite of Colorado's Front Range. Surprisingly, we found that a significant fraction of the water was lost by seepage through the underlying bedrock. Seepage dominated, with only 10%–20% loss by evaporation. We propose a conceptual model of gnamma formation in which enhanced weathering of the bedrock beneath the gnamma increases the water holding capacity and permeability of the underlying rock that in turn promotes efficient water loss through seepage and further weathering of the surrounding rock. This model has implications for bare‐rock weathering and hence the evolution of landscapes over geologic timescales.

Complexity of Arctic Ocean water isotope (δ18O, δ2H) spatial and temporal patterns revealed with machine learning

The stable isotope compositions of water (δ18O, δ2H, deuterium-excess) are important tracers that help illuminate the changing Arctic water cycle and how Arctic-sourced water can influence lower latitudes. We present simultaneous boundary layer water vapor and ocean water isotope data that were measured continuously in the western Arctic Ocean. Sea surface water isotopes varied between the shallower continental Chukchi Shelf and the deeper Chukchi Borderlands to the north. The Chukchi Borderlands surface waters were less saline than the offshore Chukchi Shelf, as the Borderlands are influenced by greater sea ice cover and contribution of sea ice melt to surface freshwater. This greater contribution of sea ice melt resulted in lower deuterium-excess (δ2H − 8*δ18O) in surface water values in the deeper Chukchi Borderlands than on the shallower Chukchi Shelf. Additionally, the sea ice melt contributions to freshwater were less prominent than river runoff, but freshwater from both sources decreased substantially below 70 m depth in the Chukchi Borderlands. Our observed water isotope values provided the foundation for producing water isotope maps (isoscapes) based on remote sensing and machine learning which incorporate parameters that can influence ocean circulation and thus water isotopes (e.g., salinity, sea surface temperature, water depth). These isoscapes suggest spatial complexity in the distribution of stable water isotopes in the Arctic, including sharp gradients in the distribution of the isotopes in seawater that were studied. These isoscapes can be improved in future iterations, for example, with the availability of more spatially continuous, remotely sensed oceanic variables or continuous ship-based measurements to use as additional predictors. As a result, the generation of these isoscapes could become a useful tool for understanding the past, present, and future Arctic water cycle in the context of the global hydrologic cycle.

Subaqueous carbonate speleothems as paleotemperature archives – clumped isotope thermometry and stable isotope compositions of inclusion-hosted water

Clumped isotope measurements of carbonates and stable isotope analyses of water trapped in fluid inclusions are both promising techniques to determine carbonate formation temperatures. Cave-hosted carbonate deposits (speleothems) are excellent targets for such studies, but kinetic fractionations and diagenetic influences frequently deteriorate the temperature data obtained from these methods. However, subaqueous carbonate deposits may provide reliable data, as kinetic fractionations are less significant in underwater environments. In this study, subaqueous speleothems, whose formation temperatures were directly measured in the water, were investigated. Additionally, temperatures calculated from the oxygen isotope fractionations between calcite and fluid inclusion-hosted water were compared with clumped isotope temperatures obtained for subaqueous carbonate formations in cave-hosted lakes. The clumped isotope temperatures fit the measured and calculated fluid inclusion temperatures within the analytical precisions. Carbonate deposits formed at elevated temperatures (~50°C or above) may undergo post-formational calcite-water oxygen isotope exchange, altering the composition of the inclusion-hosted water. In contrast, subaqueous speleothems formed at about 20-25°C appear to preserve the primary isotopic compositions. Our study shows that subaqueous carbonate speleothems are useful targets for clumped isotope and inclusion water analyses, making them valuable paleotemperature archives.

Use of isotope techniques to evaluate the recharged ability of the upper Pleistocene aquifer in the Nambo Plain

In the Nambo Plain, the monitoring data on dynamics and quality of groundwater has shown declining signs in quantity and quality both in the existing groundwater aquifers, and the exploitation of groundwater in recent time is believed to be a cause of this decline. That shows the need for further research, especially on the modern recharge ability of the existing groundwater aquifers, to re-evaluate the groundwater potential of the region. For that purpose, isotope techniques are applied to evaluate the recharge ability of the upper Pleistocene aquifer, an important source of water supply in rural areas in the Nambo Plain.
 In this study, groundwater, river water and rainwater samples were collected and analyzed for stable isotope composition, tritium, radiocarbon and major hydro-chemical parameters. Data on stable isotope composition in groundwater are used to define the origin of groundwater while tritium and 14C content are used to determine groundwater age and to predict the aquifer’s recharge zone; and in combining with the stable isotope composition and tritium content of river water to evaluate the dynamic relationship between river water and groundwater.
 The obtained results show that: i) Groundwater in the study aquifer is originated from meteorological water and formed at different stages. ii) The high 3H and 14C content in some groundwater samples indicate that the aquifer has modern rainwater infiltrated as a recharge source. iii) The similarity of stable isotope composition in the Vam Co river water and groundwater adjacent to the river shows that there is a hydraulic relationship between them. This is an important basis for assessing the recharge ability to the qp3 aquifer of the Vam Co river water.

Spatiotemporal variation in cave percolation waters: A functional approach

Understanding the mechanisms controlling spatial heterogeneity of drip water percolation into caves is essential for interpreting karst aquifer recharge and speleothem isotopic and geochemical records for paleoclimate analyses. Here we present the first analysis of drip rate variability using a novel time-varying Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA), validated against drip water stable isotope composition. Twenty-six drip sites were monitored across Harrie Wood Cave, south-east Australia, over a 2.5 year period. A positive relationship of cave drip water hydrology with precipitation and soil moisture was identified, with soil moisture recording the strongest relationship. FPCA was used to classify drip-water flow (percolation) pathways based on temporal shifts in the drip rate time series. Our results reveal that three percolation classes can be used to explain water movement within the cave: storage baseflow, fracture baseflow and overflow. The successful application of FPCA in this study suggests that this statistical technique will be useful for the analysis and interpretation of other large, discontinuous hydrological datasets.

Technical note: Isotopic fractionation of evaporating waters: effect of sub-daily atmospheric variations and eventual depletion of heavy isotopes

Abstract. Isotopic fractionation of evaporating waters has been studied constantly in recent decades, particularly because it enables calculation of both the volume of water evaporated from a water body and the isotopic composition of its source water. We studied the stable water isotopic composition of an artificial pan filled with water and subject to total evaporation in a sub-humid environment, in order to put into practice an operational method for estimating the time since disconnection of riverine pools when these are sampled for the quality of aquatic life. Results indicate that (i) when about 70 % of pan water had evaporated and its isotopic composition had become enriched in heavy isotopes, some subsequent periods of depletion instead of enrichment happened; and (ii) the customary application of isotopic fractionation equations to determine the isotopic composition of the water in the pan using weekly averaged atmospheric conditions (temperature and relative humidity) strongly underestimated the changes observed but predicted an early depletion of heavy isotopes. The first result, rarely reported in the literature, was found to be fully consistent with the early studies of the isotopic composition of evaporating waters. The second one could be attributed to the fact that weekly averages of temperature and relative humidity strongly overestimated air relative humidity during daylight periods of active evaporation. However, when the fractionation equations were parameterized using temperature and relative humidity weighted by potential evapotranspiration at sub-hourly time steps, they adequately reproduced the observed isotopic composition of the water in the pan, including the late periods of heavy isotope depletion. We demonstrate how weekly increases in air relative humidity when the pan water was already enriched in heavy isotopes led to their depletion. We also analyse the errors that can be incurred if time averages are used instead of flux-weighted meteorological data for model parameterization and if unidentified periods of heavy isotope depletion occur. Our results should be taken into account when applying fractionation equations, particularly in conditions or areas with high air relative humidity.

Arsenic distribution and partitioning in multiple media in a typical catchment in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau: A comparison between freshwater and saltwater lakes

Arsenic (As) has been widely detected in surface media on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP); however, the differences in the As distribution and partitioning characteristics between freshwater and saltwater lakes remain poorly understood. To determine the distribution and partitioning characteristics of As, multimedia environmental samples were collected from a typical small watershed consisting of a river, wetland, and both freshwater and saltwater lakes on the QTP. Results showed that freshwater systems, represented by Hurleg Lake, were high in particulate arsenic (PAs) and low in dissolved arsenic (DAs), whereas the saltwater system represented by Tosen Lake, exhibited the reverse distribution. This discrepancy in As distribution was primarily attributed to evaporation enrichment, competitive adsorption of HCO3− and pH variations, as suggested by correlation analysis and stable isotopic composition of water. In the stratified Tosen Lake, an increasing trend of DAs in the water column was observed, potentially driven by the reductive dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides and bacterial sulfate reduction in the anoxic bottom hypolimnion. Conversely, Hurleg Lake maintained oxic conditions with stable DAs concentrations. Notably, PAs was elevated in the bottom layer of both lakes, possibly due to uptake/adsorption by biogenic particles, as indicated by high levels of chl.α and suspended particulate matter. These findings offer insights into the potential future impact of climate change on As mobilization/redistribution in arid plateau lakes, with implications for management policies that regulate As pollution.

Topographic influence on ecohydrology in volcanic watersheds of the western Pacific monsoon area: evidence from water stable isotope composition of meteoric water, thermal water, and plants

ABSTRACT In Taiwanese volcanic watersheds, we investigated stable water isotopes in meteoric water, plants, and thermal water. Meteoric water exhibited a seasonal cycle, with heavier isotopes in winter and lighter ones in summer, especially in the southern region. The northern monsoon signal lagged the south by two weeks. In the Tatun mountains, young water fractions indicated prevalent old water sources. In the northern watershed, streamwater mainly came from the winter monsoon, while the southern one was influenced by alternating monsoons. Both indices indicated that winter plants depended on summer rainfall. Streamwater and plants had distinct sources in winter, supporting ecohydrological separation. Thermal spring water’s d-excess helped identify water–rock interactions, with low d value signaling such interactions. The topographic wetness index showed a higher summer monsoon contribution to southern streamwater but a lower one to plants. The mean linear channel direction significantly affected the monsoon contribution fraction, with northeast-oriented channels vulnerable to northeastward winter monsoons. Finally, we developed a model illustrating hydrological processes on short and long timescales. Our findings enhance our understanding of hydrological disturbances’ impact on water resources and ecosystems.

The contemporary stable isotope hydrology of Lake Suigetsu and surrounding catchment (Japan) and its implications for sediment-derived palaeoclimate records

The Lake Suigetsu sediment cores exemplify a high-quality archive of palaeoclimatic change in East Asia during the past 150 ka. Robust interpretation of stable isotope-based proxy reconstructions from the Suigetsu cores can be aided by a greater understanding of the factors affecting the isotope composition of the lake and how it relates to that of precipitation. Here we use extended contemporary monitoring to establish the factors affecting the stable isotope composition (δ18O, δ2H and d-excess) of precipitation, river water and lake water in the catchment surrounding Lake Suigetsu, central Japan. We show that the composition of precipitation is influenced by the dual East Asian Monsoon system, producing minima in δ18O and δ2H and semi-annually varying d-excess values across the year. These signals are then transferred to the lake system, where they are combined with secondary local influences on lake water composition: homogenisation with existing catchment waters, a catchment transit lag, the interaction with saline water from the nearby Sea of Japan, and evaporative enrichment during summer. Our observations suggest that the palaeo-isotope composition of Lake Suigetsu was closely related to the behaviour of the East Asian Monsoon. We highlight lake stratification and proxy seasonality as critical components of signal interpretation.

Identifying the controls on nitrate and metabolic state within the Red River delta (Vietnam) with the use of stable isotopes

In many places around the world, anthropogenic activities have resulted in nitrate (NO3−) pollution and changes in the metabolic state of aquatic ecosystems. Here we combined stable isotope and physico-chemical monitoring to assess the sources of NO3− and the overall metabolic state within the Red River delta, Vietnam. River water stable isotope compositions (δ18O-H2O) ranged between −11.2 and −2.7 ‰, δ18O-NO3− between −7.1 and + 29.7 ‰ and δ15N-NO3− between −3.9 and + 14.0 ‰. We identified the dominant NO3− sources as: 1) soil leachate, 2) domestic waste flushed from urban areas, and 3) NH4+ fertilizers washed from paddy fields. The relative impact of each source depends on geographical location within the delta and the time of year, due to dilution and concentration effects during wet and dry seasons. The primary NO3−source upstream is natural soil leachates, predominantly from tributaries connected to the Red River’s main stream. Within the middle-lower section of Red River delta, urban pollution from manure and septic waste reaches as high as 50 % of the total NO3− load during dry season. NO3− leached from fertilizers is also high at sites in the middle of the delta, related to agricultural activities. Dissolved oxygen isotope (δ18O-O2) values calculated from δ18O-H2O and δ18O-NO3− values indicate that the aquatic metabolism is net autotrophic (oxygen from primary production exceeds consumption by respiration), but high inputs of biodegradable organic matter from untreated domestic waste and high rates of sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) have resulted in the whole river system becoming undersaturated in oxygen. High NO3− loads and low DO saturation are of critical concern and require mitigation practices to improve water quality for millions of people.

A flexible device to produce a gas stream with a precisely controlled water vapour mixing ratio and isotope composition based on microdrop dispensing technology

Abstract. ​​​​​​​Here we describe a versatile device to produce a gas stream with a precisely controlled water vapour mixing ratio and stable water isotope composition based on microdrop dispensing technology. To produce a moist airstream, the microdrop dispensing technology ejects micrometre-size water droplets that completely evaporate into a stream of carrier gas heated to 60 ∘C. By precisely controlling the contribution of water standards from two dispenser heads into a carrier gas stream, the device allows one to set the air–vapour stream to any isotope ratio between two endmember waters. We show that the Allan deviation of the water vapour mixing ratio is 10 ppmv over more than 24 h and reaches 0.004 ‰ for δ18O and 0.02 ‰ for δ2H for a flow rate of 40 sccm. Tests with flow rates from 40–250 sccm show an increase of the Allan deviation with higher flow rates. Tests with mixing standard water from two dispenser heads show a linear mixing across a range of water vapour mixing ratios from 1000 to 20 000 ppmv. In addition to presenting the design and several performance characteristics of the new system, we describe two application examples. First, we utilise the device to determine the water vapour mixing ratio–isotope ratio dependency, a common artefact of water vapour isotope spectrometers. Second, we utilise the device to provide a constant background stream of moist air for fluid inclusion water isotope analysis in calcite samples from stalagmites. The observed flexibility and precision of the device underpins its usefulness and potential for a wide range of applications in atmospheric water vapour isotope measurements. Future developments could focus on reducing the number of manual interventions needed to clear dispenser heads from gas bubbles and the provision of a water vapour stream at flow rates of up to several litres per minute.

Stable isotope hydrology of surface and ground waters in King George Island, Antarctica

ABSTRACT The region around the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula is warming fast, a situation that will lead to widespread changes in local hydrological cycles. King George Island (KGI) hosts a complex network of lakes and rivers, fed by glaciers, snow and rain, and underlain by thick permafrost. We present here the first study of the stable isotope composition of the surface waters in the ice-free southern peninsulas of KGI. Permafrost samples had the highest δ 18O and δ 2H values (–6.7 and –50 ‰, respectively), and river waters the lowest (–9.1 and –70 ‰, respectively), with groundwater (–8.2 and –62.7 ‰, respectively), lakes (–8.6 and –66.8 ‰, respectively) and (summer) meltwater (–9 and –69.5 ‰, respectively) having intermediary values. Our results suggest that a clear separation of the various water bodies (permafrost, snow, meltwater, lakes) based on the δ 18Owater and δ 2Hwater is possible. Further, water in lakes on a W–E transect (i.e. with increased distance from the Bellingshausen Sea) have a general tendency towards lower δ 18O (and δ 2H) values. The results allow for the establishment of a baseline against which ongoing and future changes of the hydrological cycle could be analysed, and past climate changes be reconstructed.

Vadose zone water stable isotope profiles for assessing groundwater recharge: Sensitivity to seasonal soil sampling

Groundwater recharge is widely recognized as being the most important parameter for the sustainable management of water resources. In semiarid environments, groundwater recharge can be quantified using the piston displacement method (PDM). From a single soil sampling campaign, the PDM relies on linking the deeper vadose zone soil pore water stable isotope composition (δ2HH2O and δ18OH2O) to the local meteoric water line (LMWL). However, the isotopic composition of precipitation changes seasonally, influencing the water isotope composition of the vadose zone over time. Thus, it is important to test whether the PDM is sensitive to seasonal soil sampling and whether the assessed recharge rate is independent of the time of sampling. This study investigates the effect of seasonal soil sampling on the distribution of vadose zone stable isotope composition to determine whether the sampling time influences the estimate of recharge rate from PDM. Soil samples were obtained along vertical profiles through the vadose zone in a semiarid region during the spring, summer, and autumn seasons. Specifically, the δ2HH2O and δ18OH2O of the soil pore water were determined along vertical profiles, and the PDM was applied to quantify the annual recharge. The δ2HH2O and δ18OH2O values range from −7.3 to −3.5 ‰ and from −54.4 to +7.41 ‰, respectively, and plot along a continuum with a slope less than the LMWL. Samples from deeper in the vadose zone profile had distinct ranges in isotopic composition between the three soil sampling campaigns, with isotopic composition of spring sampling dominated by lower values and those from autumn with higher values. Despite these differences, the resulting annual recharge rates from the different sampling campaigns are comparable (1.5 to 2 % of annual precipitation). Even though the pore water isotopic composition changed over time, the shift between the deeper vadose zone isotopic compositions and the LMWL remained relatively constant, leading to a similar recharge estimate over time. Therefore, the PDM-based recharge assessment in the tested semiarid environment is independent of the sampling time, which indicates that sampling for assessing groundwater recharge can be undertaken during any season.

Sap flux and stable isotopes of water show contrasting tree water uptake strategies in two co‐occurring tropical rainforest tree species

AbstractThe short‐term dynamics of tree water use strategies for neighbouring co‐occurring species are poorly understood. Here, we quantify the high frequency changes in water sources and sap flux patterns of two commonly co‐occurring tropical rainforest tree species: Dendrocnide photinophylla (Kunth; Chew) and Argyrodendron peralatum (F.M. Bailey; Edlin ex J.H. Boas). A combination of continuous sap flux measurements and hourly sampling of xylem water stable isotope composition (δD and δ18O) were used to observe water use strategies during a 24‐h transpiration cycle. Sap flux ranged between 2.82 and 28.50 L day−1, with A. peralatum recording a 67% higher rate than D. photinophylla. For both tree species, sap flux increased with tree size and diurnal sap flux increase resulted in more isotopically enriched xylem water. A Bayesian Mixing Model analysis, which used sampled soil water isotopic composition from five soil depths ranging from of 0 to 1 m, revealed that D. photinophylla primarily used water from very shallow depth or soil surface layer (2–60 cm), while A. peralatum sourced its water mostly from deeper layers (60–100 cm). We propose that these differences in species' water consumption patterns are related to plant water storage capacity and wood anatomical features. This research demonstrates that combining xylem isotope composition and sap flux measurements can help reveal species‐specific water use strategies, which can be beneficial for improved process understanding in ecohydrological modelling.

Groundwater-surface water interactions in a semi-arid irrigated agricultural valley: A hydrometric and tracer-aided approach

The purpose of this study was to assess hydrological controls (e.g., rainfall, irrigation practices, river discharge, dam operation, evaporation) on surface (SW)- ground water (GW) interactions in an irrigated valley within semi-arid Patagonia Argentina (−65.49 W, −43.29 S). We combined different sampling designs (watershed/sub-watershed scales, longitudinal and monthly samplings) from 2015 to 2019 to investigate the temporal and spatial variation of hydrometrics, electrical conductivity (EC) and stable isotope composition of surface and ground water. Results showed that plant transpiration in the upper basin, evaporation in the middle basin and the reservoir dynamics modified water salinity and left an imprint in stable isotopes. Water tables in the irrigated valley were high (0.5–2 m level from soil surface) and presented higher salinity than river water. Groundwater salinity, temporal variation of water table levels and stable isotopes suggested that groundwater is subjected to evaporation, is recharged from field seepage and, at a lesser extent, from local rainwater. River salinity increased downstream of the irrigated valley during the whole study period (3 years), showing the effects of agriculture and urbanization. EC also responded to the opening and closing of irrigation channels. EC and daily discharge statistical analysis revealed that groundwater recharge the stream below a threshold discharge of 26 m.s−1; with river salinity increasing linearly as daily discharge decrease. This study illustrates the deep modifications that agricultural systems, mainly surface irrigation, produce on semiarid watersheds. Given that SW and GW components are currently not isolated and flow regulation and irrigation practices are playing a critical role in soil quality and river chemistry at low flow conditions, a conjunctive water management strategy must be implemented in order to prevent further land and water quality degradation.

An age scale for new climate records from Sherman Island, West Antarctica

Abstract. Few ice cores from the Amundsen Sea and Bellingshausen Sea sectors of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) extend back in time further than a few hundred years. The WAIS is believed to be susceptible to collapse as a result of anthropogenic climate change and may have at least partially collapsed during the Last Interglacial (LIG) period. Understanding the stability of the WAIS during warm periods such as the LIG and Holocene is important. As part of the WACSWAIN (WArm Climate Stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet in the last INterglacial) project, the British Antarctic Survey's (BAS) Rapid Access Isotope Drill (RAID) was deployed in 2020 on Sherman Island in the Abbot Ice Shelf, West Antarctica. We drilled a 323 m deep borehole, with discrete samples of ice chippings collected that cover the entire depth range of the drilled ice. The samples were analysed for stable water isotope composition and major ion content at BAS from 2020–2022. Using annual layer counting of chemical records, volcanic horizon identification and ice modelling, an age scale for the record of 1724 discrete samples is presented. The Sherman Island ice record extends back to greater than 1240 years, providing the oldest, continuous ice-derived palaeoclimate records in the coastal Amundsen and Bellingshausen Sea sectors to date. We demonstrate the potential for recovery of a complete Holocene climate record from Sherman Island in the future and confidence in the ability of RAID samples to contain sufficiently resolved records for meaningful climatic interpretation.

Isotope-derived young water fractions in streamflow across the tropical Andes mountains and Amazon floodplain

Abstract. The role of topography in determining water transit times and pathways through catchments is unclear, especially in mountainous environments – yet these environments play central roles in global water, sediment, and biogeochemical fluxes. Since the vast majority of intensively monitored catchments are at northern latitudes, the interplay between water transit, topography, and other landscape and climatic characteristics is particularly underexplored in tropical environments. To address this gap, here we present the results of a multiyear hydrologic sampling campaign (twice-monthly and storm sampling) to quantify water transit in seven small catchments (<1.3 km2 area) across the transition from the Andes mountains to the Amazon floodplain in southern Peru. We use the stable isotope composition of water (δ18O) to calculate the fraction of streamflow comprised of recent precipitation (“young water fraction”) for each of the seven small catchments. Flow-weighted young water fractions (Fyw) are 5 %–26 % in the high-elevation mountains, 22 %–52 % in the mid-elevation mountains, and 7 % in the foreland floodplain. Across these catchments, topography does not exert a clear control on water transit; instead, stream Fyw is apparently controlled by a combination of hydroclimate (precipitation regime) and bedrock permeability. Mid-elevation sites are posited to have the highest Fyw due to more frequent and intense rainfall; less permeable bedrock and poorly developed soils may also facilitate high Fyw at these sites. Lowland soils have low Fyw due to very low flow path gradients despite low permeability. The data presented here highlight the complexity of factors that determine water transit in tropical mountainous catchments, particularly highlighting the role of intense orographic precipitation at mountain fronts in driving rapid conveyance of water through catchments. These results have implications for the response of Earth's montane “water towers” to climate change and for water–rock reactions that control global biogeochemical cycles.

A speleothem record of seasonality and moisture transport around the 8.2 ka event in Central Europe (Vacska Cave, Hungary)

AbstractA stalagmite was collected in northern Hungary from the Vacska Cave, where monitoring and ventilation-based site selection had been conducted. The stalagmite covers the 10–8 ka (relative to AD 1950) period, including the so-called 8.2 ka event, and showed preceding signs of climate change that were evaluated by petrographic observations, 14C activities, Sr concentrations, and stable isotope compositions of calcite and inclusion-hosted water. Comparisons of speleothem records show that isotope peaks at ca. 8.5 ka are related to a regional climate anomaly, rather than to a continental-scale event. In accordance with regional proxy records, the 8.2 ka event was associated with a series of temperature and precipitation amount changes, starting with cooling and a reduction in the winter-to-summer precipitation ratio, and then becoming a humid and warm phase at 8.15 ka. X-ray diffraction-based crystallinity parameter (FWHM) values provided evidence for diagenetic alteration of the stable oxygen isotope compositions of inclusion waters. Nevertheless, the stable hydrogen isotope compositions of inclusion waters and the oxygen isotope values of the host calcite revealed elevated d-excess values, and therefore increased Mediterranean moisture contribution during the 8.2 ka event, which indirectly indicate the southward displacement of moisture transport from the Atlantic Ocean.
