Tuning structures and catalysis performance of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks based on copper phthalocyanine building block and phenyl connector.

Based on the experimentally reported stable and conductive two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as building block and cyan substituted phenyl as connector (CuCOF-CN) as an electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction reaction (RR), first principle calculations were performed on CuCOF-CN and its analog with the CN being replaced by H (CuCOF). Comparatively studied on the crystal structures, electronic properties, and CO2RR performance of the two catalysts found that CuCOF has reduced crystal unit size, more positive charge on Cu and CuPc segments, smaller band gap, and lower reaction barrier for CO2 RR than CuCOF-CN. CuCOF is proposed to be good potential electrocatalyst with good environment friendliness. The substituent effect and structure-property-performance relationship would help for designing and fabricating new electrocatalysts.

Achieving Sub-ppm Sensitivity in SO2 Detection with a Chemically Stable Covalent Organic Framework.

We report the inaugural experimental investigation of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to address the formidable challenge of SO2 detection. Specifically, an imine-functionalized COF (SonoCOF-9) demonstrated a modest and reversible SO2 sorption of 3.5 mmol g-1 at 1 bar and 298 K. At 0.1 bar (and 298 K), the total SO2 uptake reached 0.91 mmol g-1 with excellent reversibility for at least 50 adsorption-desorption cycles. An isosteric enthalpy of adsorption (ΔHads) for SO2 equaled -42.3 kJ mol-1, indicating a relatively strong interaction of SO2 molecules with the COF material. Also, molecular dynamics simulations and Møller-Plesset perturbation theory calculations showed the interaction of SO2 with π density of the rings and lone pairs of the N atoms of SonoCOF-9. The combination of experimental data and theoretical calculations corroborated the potential use of this COF for the selective detection and sensing of SO2 at the sub-ppm level (0.0064 ppm of SO2).

Copper-Surface-Mediated Synthesis of sp2 Carbon-Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework Photocathodes for Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution.

Sp2-carbon (sp2-c) covalent organic frameworks (COFs), featuring distinctive π-conjugated network structures, facilitate the migration of photo-generated carriers, rendering them exceptionally appealing for applications in photoelectrochemical water splitting. However, owing to the powdery nature of COFs, leaving anchor the sp2-c COFs powder tightly onto a conductive substrate challenging. Here, we propose a method for preparing photoactive substance-conductive substrate integrated photocathodes through copper surface-mediated knoevenagel polycondensation (Cu-SMKP), this approach results in a uniform and stable sp2-c COF film, directly grown on commercial copper foam (COFTh-Cu). The COFTh-Cu demonstrates a high H2-evolution photocurrent density of 56 μA cm-2 at 0.3 V vs. RHE, sustaining stability for 12 h. The as-prepared COFTh-Cu represents a 4.5-fold increase in current density compared to traditional spin-coating methods and outperforms most COF photocathodes without cocatalysts. This innovative copper surface-mediated approach for preparing photocathodes opens up a crucial pathway towards the realization of highly active COF photocathodes.

Regenerable and stable olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks with coordination template for selective and efficient trapping of scandium ion

Using coordination templates within covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can significantly enhance the selective properties of these materials. Herein, 1,4-phthalaldehyde, 2,4, 6-trimethyl-1,3, 5-triazine, and a scandium coordination complex were selected to perform a three-in-one strategy, and a class of stable olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks with coordination templates were synthesized. By adjusting the proportion of organic ligands to scandium complexes, a range of crystalline COFs with tunable scandium incorporation levels has been obtained. Upon removing scandium from the material with the suitable metal content, we achieved a metal-imprinted COF (De-Sc-0.33), demonstrating remarkable affinity and selectivity for Sc3+ ions, even in acidic environments and amidst competing metal ions (53.56 mg/g). In particular, the skeleton benefits from the characteristics of olefins, and its regenerability and stability in highly acidic environments surpass those of existing scandium adsorbents (with a capacity drop of less than 2 % after 20 cycles), thus holding tremendous potential for the enrichment of scandium in practical applications.

Mild and Subtle Synthesis of β-Ketoenamine COFs with High Crystallinity and Controllable Solubility Guided by a Monomer Preassembly Strategy.

The stability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is crucial for their applications in demanding environments. However, increasing the stability of COFs often comes with challenges such as higher synthesis difficulty, lower crystal quality, and reduced controllability during synthesis, making it difficult to regulate dimensions and morphology, thereby impacting the processing and shaping of stable COFs. Herein, the study presents a novel confined polymerization approach guided by hydrogen bonding preassembly to synthesize a soluble and stable COF featuring β-ketoenamine linkage. The presence of relatively weaker hydrogen bonds accelerates the orderly arrangement of monomers, ensuring appropriate spacing, and orientations among functional groups. This facilitates efficient covalent polymerization, leading to the creation of the framework while minimizing the "self-correction" mechanism during crystal growth, thereby enhancing the efficiency of COF synthesis. Furthermore, this method offers precise control over the size of the synthesized COF. The resulting crystalline COF can be toggled between dissolution and precipitation states, facilitating the fabrication of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) through leveraging the solubility properties of COF. Overall, this pioneering strategy yields valuable insights for advancing weak bond assembly-mediated confined polymerization approaches, the controlled synthesis of stable COFs, and the preparation and processing of soluble COFs in diverse applications.

Conversion of Carbon Dioxide into Molecular-based Porous Frameworks.

ConspectusThe conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to value-added functional materials is a major challenge in realizing a carbon-neutral society. Although CO2 is an attractive renewable carbon resource with high natural abundance, its chemical inertness has made the conversion of CO2 into materials with the desired structures and functionality difficult. Molecular-based porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), are designable porous solids constructed from molecular-based building units. While MOF/COFs attract wide attention as functional porous materials, the synthetic methods to convert CO2 into MOF/COFs have been unexplored due to the lack of synthetic guidelines for converting CO2 into molecular-based building units.In this Account, we describe state-of-the-art studies on the conversion of CO2 into MOF/COFs. First, we outline the key design principles of CO2-derived molecular building units for the construction of porous structures. The appropriate design of reactivity and the positioning of bridging sites in CO2-derived molecular building units is essential for constructing CO2-derived MOF/COFs with desired structures and properties. The synthesis of CO2-derived MOF/COFs involves both the transformation of CO2 into building units and the formation of extended structures of the MOF/COFs. We categorized the synthetic methods into three types as follows: a one-step synthesis (Type-I); a one-pot synthesis without workup (Type-II); and a multistep synthesis which needs workup (Type-III).We demonstrate that borohydride can convert CO2 into formate and formylhydroborate that serve as a bridging linker for MOFs in the Type-I and Type-II synthesis, representing the first examples of CO2-derived MOFs. The electronegativity of coexisting metal ions determines the selective conversion of CO2 into formate and formylhydroborate. Formylhydroborate-based MOFs exhibit flexible pore sizes controlled by the pressure of CO2 during synthesis. In pursuit of highly porous structures, we present the Type-I synthesis of MOFs from CO2 via the in situ transformation of CO2 into carbamate linkers by amines. The direct conversion of diluted CO2 (400 ppm) in air into carbamate-based MOFs is also feasible. Coordination interactions stabilize the intrinsically labile carbamate in the MOF lattice. A recent study demonstrates that the Type-III synthesis using alkynylsilane precursors enables the synthesis of highly porous and stable carboxylate-based MOFs from CO2, which exhibit catalytic activity in CO2 conversion. We also extended the synthesis of MOFs from CO2 to COFs. The Type-III synthesis using a formamide monomer affords stable CO2-derived COFs showing proton conduction properties. The precise design of CO2-derived building units enables expansion of the structures and functionalities of CO2-derived MOF/COFs. Finally, we propose future challenges in this field: (i) expanding structural diversity through synthesis using external fields and (ii) exploring unique functionalities of CO2-derived MOF/COFs, such as carriers for CO2 capture and precursors for CO2 transformation. We anticipate that this Account will lay the foundation for exploring new chemistry of the conversion of CO2 into porous materials.

Constructing covalent organic frameworks with dense thiophene S sites for effective iodine capture

Developing versatile sorption materials for radionuclide capture (e.g. iodine) is critical for nuclear energy and environmental science. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently become a new platform for developing sorption materials because of their high surface area and functionalised skeleton structure. Herein, two types of COF materials containing thiophene were designed as iodine sorbents and synthesised via a Schiff base reaction of benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b’:5,6-b’’]trithiophene-2,5,8-tricarbaldehyde, benzidine (DADP) and p-phenylenediamine (DAB): DADP-COF and DAB-COF. DAB-COF exhibits a unique granular-rod-like morphology and has a higher surface area (1775 m2/g) than DADP-COF (1140 m2/g), which is clearly beneficial for the physical adsorption of iodine. Meanwhile, the COF backbone is rich in N and S sites, which are advantageous for the chemical adsorption of iodine. These two features make the two prepared COFs ideal iodine sorption materials. DAB-COF demonstrates an excellent gaseous iodine adsorption capacity of 4.2 g/g, ranking it as one of the most effective iodine sorption materials, while DADP-COF exhibits a good adsorption capacity of over 235 mg/g for iodine in cyclohexane solutions. Density functional theory calculations prove that imine N and thiophene S serve as active sites during the iodine adsorption. DAB-COF exposes more active sites because of its higher surface area, leading to a higher iodine adsorption capacity than DADP-COF. The results of this study indicate that introducing thiophene to COFs improves sorption efficacy for sorption applications in general and particularly paves the way for developing stable and effective COF sorbents for iodine capture from various environments.

Polyphosphonate covalent organic frameworks

Herein, we report polyphosphonate covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constructed via P-O-P linkages. The materials are synthesized via a single-step condensation reaction of the charge-assisted hydrogen-bonded organic framework, which is constructed from phenylphosphonic acid and 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis[p‐phenylphosphonic acid]porphyrin and is formed by simply heating its hydrogen-bonded precursor without using chemical reagents. Above 210 °C, it becomes an amorphous microporous polymeric structure due to the oligomerization of P-O-P bonds, which could be shown by constant-time solid-state double-quantum 31P nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The polyphosphonate COF exhibits good water and water vapor stability during the gas sorption measurements, and electrochemical stability in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte in water. The reported family of COFs fills a significant gap in the literature by providing stable microporous COFs suitable for use in water and electrolytes. Additionally, we provide a sustainable synthesis route for the COF synthesis. The narrow pores of the COF effectively capture CO2.

Robust Amide-Linked Fluorinated Covalent Organic Framework for Long-Term Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysis.

The high energy demand of the evolving world opens the door to develop more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a promising candidate, being the 2e- pathway of great interest for the green production of hydrogen peroxide. Metal-free covalent organic frameworks (COFs) electrocatalysts present a suitable alternative to substitute the noble-metals more commonly employed in this application. However, the lability of the linkages building up the framework raises an issue for their long-term use and application in aggressive media. Herein, a stable amide-linked COF is reported through post-synthetic modification of a previously reported imine-linked COF proven to be effective as an electrocatalyst, enhancing its chemical stability and electrochemical response. It is found that after the linkage transformation, the new electrocatalyst displays a higher selectivity toward the H2O2 production (98.5%) and an enhanced turnover frequency of 0.155s-1, which is among the bests reported to date for metal-free and COF based electrocatalysts. The results represent a promising step forward for metal-free non pyrolyzed electrocatalysts, improving their properties through post-synthetic linkage modification for long-term operation.

Construction of chiral crown ethers in robust covalent organic frameworks for electrochromatographic enantioseparation

ABSTRACT Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is a rapidly emerging separation technique that merges the high separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis with the exceptional selectivity of liquid chromatography. However, it remains a synthetic challenge to design functional chiral stationary phases (CSPs) with high chemical stability against acid and base in CEC enantioseparation. Here we demonstrate that incorporating chiral crown ethers into stable covalent organic frameworks (COFs) enables efficient and stable separations of racemates by CEC. This facilitates the crafting of two three-dimensional (3D) chiral COFs by polycondensation of a chiral 1,1'-binaphyl-20-crown-6-derived dialdehyde and tetraamines with diisopropyl substituents. Both feature an 11-fold interpenetrated diamond framework, characterized by tubular open channels decorated with chiral crown ethers serving as enantioselective recognition and binding sites. These frameworks demonstrate excellent stability in water, acid and base, thanks to the presence of bulky isopropyl groups that shield the dynamic imine linkages. Moreover, the precisely defined COF channels enhanced the accessibility of the enclosed crown ethers to the analytes while providing strong protection against harsh environments, rendering them suitable for CSPs in CEC separations. They can effectively separate some important enantiomers, including ketones, epoxides and alkaline substances, when utilized as coatings on chiral columns, particularly facilitating the chiral separation of drugs. This study advances the application of COFs in electrochromatographic separations, expanding the scope of porous materials design and engineering to create COFs with targeted enantioselective properties.

Stabilizing atomic Ru species in conjugated sp2 carbon-linked covalent organic framework for acidic water oxidation

Suppressing the kinetically favorable lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism pathway and triggering the adsorbate evolution mechanism pathway at the expense of activity are the state-of-the-art strategies for Ru-based electrocatalysts toward acidic water oxidation. Herein, atomically dispersed Ru species are anchored into an acidic stable vinyl-linked 2D covalent organic framework with unique crossed π-conjugation, termed as COF-205-Ru. The crossed π-conjugated structure of COF-205-Ru not only suppresses the dissolution of Ru through strong Ru-N motifs, but also reduces the oxidation state of Ru by multiple π-conjugations, thereby activating the oxygen coordinated to Ru and stabilizing the oxygen vacancies during oxygen evolution process. Experimental results including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy, in situ powder X-ray diffraction patterns, and theoretical calculations unveil the activated oxygen with elevated energy level of O 2p band, decreased oxygen vacancy formation energy, promoted electrochemical stability, and significantly reduced energy barrier of potential determining step for acidic water oxidation. Consequently, the obtained COF-205-Ru displays a high mass activity with 2659.3 A g−1, which is 32-fold higher than the commercial RuO2, and retains long-term durability of over 280 h. This work provides a strategy to simultaneously promote the stability and activity of Ru-based catalysts for acidic water oxidation.

Heteropolyaromatic Covalent Organic Frameworks via One-Pot Multicomponent Reactions.

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) offer a platform to create different chemical structures and linkages for highly stable covalent organic frameworks (COFs). As an illustrative example, the multicomponent Povarov reaction generates 2,4-phenylquinoline from aldehydes and amines in the presence of electron-rich alkenes. In this study, we introduce a new domino reaction to generate unprecedented 2,3-phenylquinoline COFs in the presence of epoxystyrene. This work thus presents, for the first time, structural isomeric COFs produced by multicomponent domino and Povarov reactions. Furthermore, 2,3-phenylquinolines can undergo a Scholl reaction to form extended aromatic linkages. With this approach, we synthesize two thermally and chemically stable MCR-COFs and two heteropolyaromatic COFs using both domino and in situ domino and Scholl reactions. The structure and properties of these COFs are compared with the corresponding 2,4-phenylquinoline-linked COF and imine-COF, and their activity toward benzene and cyclohexane sorption and separation is investigated. The position of the pendant phenyl groups within the COF pore plays a crucial role in facilitating the industrially important sorption and separation of benzene over cyclohexane. This study opens a new avenue to construct heteropolyaromatic COFs via MCR reactions.

Ratiometric electrochemical biosensor based on Cu(II) modified covalent organic framework for the ultra-sensitive and specific detection of glutathione

As a vital biological polypeptide molecule, glutathione (GSH) is involved in the regulation of various life activities. Accurate and sensitive detection of GSH in human body is of great significance for the preliminary diagnosis of related diseases. In this research, Cu(II) modified TADH COF, which has been prepared by Cu2+ post-synthesis modification of the COF obtained through a condensation reaction of 1,3,5-(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) and 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (DHTP), and methylene blue (MB) molecules are combined to construct a ratiometric electrochemical sensor for achieving specific and ultra-sensitive detection of GSH. As a stable and active covalent organic framework material, TADH COF possesses the special O(–OH) and N(CN) binding sites, which can load and coordinate with Cu2+ effectively. The obtained Cu(II)-TADH COF serves as a sensitive electrode material for sensing GSH due to “extrusion effect” caused CuCl solid-state electrochemical signal degeneration by the specific binding of Cu and GSH while MB provides a stable electrical signal in the electrochemical sensing process as an internal reference for eliminating errors and making the detection results more accurate. The constructed electrochemical sensing platform Cu(II)-TADH COF/MB/GCE exhibited an ultrahigh sensitivity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0093 nM (S/N = 3), wide linear range of 0.05 nM–40 μM and high accuracy. For the detection of GSH in real samples including human blood, serum and urine samples, the sensor also showed excellent sensing performance. This is the first research on ratiometric electrochemical sensing platform for the ultra-sensitive detection of glutathione based on covalent organic frameworks, which provides an original and novel strategy for the electrochemical detection of GSH with COF materials.

Stable and highly efficient extraction of U(VI) from seawater by covalent organic frameworks and amidoxime co-functionalized MXene

Seawater is rich in uranium resources, but the marine environment is complicated and changeable, as well as the presence of a lot of competing ions. These are disturbing factors that cannot be ignored in seawater uranium extraction. The synthesis of adsorbents with good stability, high selectivity and large adsorption capacity has been the focus of attention. The composite adsorbent MXene-AO@LZU1 was prepared using electrostatic self-assembly of transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) with structurally stable covalent organic frameworks (COF-LZU1). The results of characterizations showed that MXene-AO@LZU1 was rich in functional groups and had an effective improvement in specific surface area. MXene-AO@LZU1 exhibited an efficient performance for [UO2(CO3)3]4- with an adsorption saturation capacity of 88.8 mg·g−1. The adsorption amount in the simulated seawater also reached 6.8 mg·g−1. MXene-AO@LZU1 had a good selectivity for uranium and outstanding stability under various extreme conditions. In addition, XPS showed that the adsorption of uranium by MXene-AO@LZU1 relied mainly on the complexation of oxygen/nitrogen-containing functional groups with [UO2(CO3)3]4-. This study explored the great potential of MXenes and COFs in seawater uranium extraction, indicating that MXene-AO@LZU1 was an efficient and stable adsorbent with good development prospects. This finding was of great importance for the application of composite materials in actual environmental cleanup, and could be extended to efficiently remove other pollutants by rational ligands design.

Boosting Aluminum Storage in Highly Stable Covalent Organic Frameworks with Abundant Accessible Carbonyl Groups

AbstractAluminum batteries employing organic electrode materials present an appealing avenue for sustainable and large‐scale energy storage. Nevertheless, conventional organic materials encounter limitations due to their restricted active sites, known instability, and sluggish redox kinetics. In this study, a redox‐active covalent organic framework supported by CNT is reported, enriched with substantial C═O groups, as an advanced cathode material for Al‐organic batteries. Theoretical simulation and ex situ analysis unveil the pivotal roles of C═O groups in effectively storing AlCl2+. As a result, Al batteries with the organic cathode exhibit a specific capacity of 290 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and outstanding rate performance. Furthermore, it retains a reversible capacity of 170 mAh g−1 even after 32 000 cycles at 10 A g−1 and attains an energy density of 389 Wh kg−1. The remarkable performance stems not only from the abundant C═O and C─N groups enabling the storage of multiple AlCl2+ by the favorable pseudocapacitive process, but also from the synergistic interplay between the robust COF network and the conductive CNT channels that significantly enhances structural stability and accelerates ion/electron diffusion. This work stands to inspire further research in the pursuit of stable organic cathodes, fostering designs with plentiful accessible redox‐active sites to boost energy storage capabilities.

Superprotonic conductivity of ketoenamine covalent-organic frameworks grafted by imidazole-based units

The achievement of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high stability and exceptional proton conductivity is of tremendous practical importance and challenge. Given this, we hope to prepare the highly stable COFs carrying CN connectors and enhance their proton conductivity via a post-modification approach. Herein, one COF, TpTta, was successfully synthesized by employing 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4′,4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)-trianiline (Tta) as starting materials, which has a β-ketoenamine structure bearing a large amount of –NH groups and intramolecular H-bonds. TpTta was then post-modified by inserting imidazole (Im) and histamine (His) molecules, yielding the corresponding COFs, Im@TpTta and His@TpTta, respectively. As a result, their proton conductivities were surveyed under changeable temperatures (30–100 °C) and relative humidities (68–98 %), revealing a degree of temperature and humidity dependence. Impressively, under identical conditions, the optimum proton conductivities of the two post-modified COFs are 1.14 × 10−2 (Im@TpTta) and 3.45 × 10−3 S/cm (His@TpTta), which are significantly greater than that of the pristine COF, TpTta (2.57 × 10−5 S/cm). Finally, their proton conduction mechanisms were hypothesized based on the computed activation energy values, water vapor adsorption values, and structural properties of these COFs. Additionally, the excellent electrochemical stability of the produced COFs was expressed, as well as the prospective application value.

Construction of covalent organic frameworks membranes in situ through nonsolvent-induce phase separation for fast and accurate nanofiltration

With the development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), their superior separation performance in membrane separation has gradually becoming apparent. The method of combining COFs with membrane materials is crucial for their applications prospect. In this study, inspired by the traditional Chinese mortise and tenon structure, we selected 1,3,5-triacetaldehyde mesityl phenol (TFP) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) as the reactive building monomers. P-Phenylenediamine (PDA) was introduced into the casting solution to construct Polyether-sulfone (PES) bottom membranes with amino ligand sites, utilizing the phase transition effect generated by the non-invasive solvent-induced method (NIPS). Subsequently, COFs composite nanofiltration membranes with two-dimensional layered structures were prepared through mild interfacial polymerization (IP) under optimized reaction conditions. The synthesis of COFs composite nanofiltration membranes was demonstrated through a series of characterizations, including scanning transmission electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The COFs composite nanofiltration membranes synthesized by this method exhibited better alignment, greater chemical stability, and higher separation efficiency compared to traditional interracially polymerized COFs composite nanofiltration membranes. As the method involves the addition of additives, it can be more widely applied to a broad range of organic polymer membranes. Furthermore, we demonstrated the effectiveness of the COF composite nanofiltration membranes produced using this method in the separation of molecular dyes. They exhibited rejection exceeding 99% for 0.1 g L−1 methyl blue (MB), Congo red (CR) and chrome black-T (EBT). Additionally, they achieved separation fluxes of up to 300 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 for mixed solutions (dyes/salts) and proved to be effective under extreme conditions, such as 1 M HCl/NaOH. Moreover, COFs-NH2PES composite nanofiltration membranes exhibited the ability to efficiently separate dye molecules of different sizes. This work introduces new ideas for constructing stable and durable COF functional composite membrane materials for practical applications.

Synergistically regulating Zn-ion flux and accelerating ion transport kinetics via zincophilic covalent organic framework interlayer for stable Zn metal anode

Zn metal is considered as an ideal anode for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) owing to the inherent merits of low cost, high theoretical capacity, and remarkable safety. However, the formation of Zn dendrites and water-induced parasitic reactions hamper the commercialization of AZIBs. Herein, a synergetic strategy to accelerate ion transfer kinetics and regulate Zn-ion flux has been proposed to achieve dendrite-free Zn anodes via a series of zincophilic covalent organic framework (COF) films. The nanoporous and mechanically stable COF films synthesized by the liquid–liquid interfacial polymerization can be straightforward transferred on the Zn foil surface through a dip-coating technique. Benefiting from the affinity between Zn2+ and electron-rich ketone, the zincophilic COF interlayers promote the de-solvation of hydrated Zn2+, simultaneously offer ample Zn2+ transport channels to facilitate rapid diffusion and regulating a homogenous Zn2+ flux, thereby inhibiting the dendritic growth and leading to the uniform Zn deposition. Additionally, the COF films with strong adherence and large surface area effectively separate Zn anodes from bulk aqueous electrolytes, inhibiting the water-induced corrosion reactions. As a result, the symmetric cell with COF-modified Zn anode exhibited a stable cycling lifetime more than 900 h at 1 mA∙cm−2 and 1 mAh∙cm−2, accompanied by a low voltage polarization of merely 74.3 mV. As a simple approach to synergistically restrict Zn-ion flux and enhance ion transport kinetics using zincophilic COF films via interfacial synthesis, this work would provide new insights into developing highly stable Zn anodes.

Irreversible bonds for higher stability of COF materials in photocatalytic reactions

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), one of a multitude of advanced mainstream materials in photocatalysts, are crystalline porous materials with tunable topology and high porosity and are connected by dynamic covalent bonds. We sought to achieve efficient photocatalytic yields, making the stability of the bond energy crucial. Stable bond energy will enable our products to be more economically efficient. At present, the main photocatalysts are reversible imine bonds and other 2D COFs, but irreversibly stable COFs are seldom involved. Therefore, this review surveys the relevant literature to explore the stability of irreversible bond energy, elaborating the synthesis schemes of irreversible bonds. Irreversibly connected bonds will improve the stability and durability of our synthesized catalyst in practical applications, so we seek to explore the stability of bond energy for our practical applications. In this review, we offer a detailed summary of the irreversible bonding pattern, explore the stability of COFs, and summarize classic highly crystalline ordered semiconductor COFs with irreversible bonding methods.
