SnSe2 Quantum Dots and Chlorhexidine Acetate Suppress Synergistically Non-radiative Recombination Loss for High Efficiency and Stability Perovskite Solar Cells.

Non-radiative recombination losses limit the property of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a synergistic strategy of SnSe2QDs doping into SnO2 and chlorhexidine acetate (CA) coating on the surface of perovskite is proposed. The introduction of 2D SnSe2QDs reduces the oxygen vacancy defects and increases the carrier mobility of SnO2. The optimized SnO2 as a buried interface obviously improves the crystallization quality of perovskite. The CA containing abundant active sites of ─NH2/─NH─, ─C═N, CO, ─Cl groups passivate the defects on the surface and grain boundary of perovskite. The alkyl chain of CA also improves the hydrophobicity of perovskite. Moreover, the synergism of SnSe2QDs and CA releases the residual stress and regulates the energy level arrangement at the top and bottom interface of perovskite. Benefiting from these advantages, the bulk and interface non-radiative recombination loss is greatly suppressed and thereby increases the carrier transport and extraction in devices. As a result, the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.41% for rigid PSCs and the best PCE of 21.84% for flexible PSCs are reached. The rigid PSC maintains 89% of initial efficiency after storing nitrogen for 3100 h. The flexible PSCs retain 87% of the initial PCE after 5000 bending cycles at a bending radius of 5 mm.

Predicting the properties of perovskite materials by improved compositionally restricted attention-based networks and explainable machine learning

Understanding the unique properties of perovskite materials is crucial in advancing solar energy technologies. Factors like heat of formation and bandgap significantly influence the light absorption capability and stability of perovskite solar cells. However, it is time-consuming and labor-intensive to obtain the properties of perovskites using traditional experimental or high-throughput computational methods. As a prospective method, machine learning can find regularities in the given training data and give accurate prediction results. In this article, we use deep learning models based on attention mechanisms and elemental features to predict the heat of formation and bandgap of perovskite materials. Random Forest and Gradient Boosted Regression Tree models have also been used for interpretable predictions of properties. The compositionally restricted attention-based network was improved by introducing a densely connected network and optimizing the network structure to increase data processing capabilities. The experiment results show that the mean absolute errors of the heat of formation and bandgap on the test sets are decreased by 5.77% and 3.37% respectively. The optimized model also shows better performance when used for classification tasks. In addition, we use the gradient boosting regression tree model and the shapley additive explanations tool to conduct an interpretable analysis, explaining the impact of different features on the predictions of the properties.

Synthesis and Properties of Halide Perovskites Nanocrystals Toward Solar Cells Application

Halide perovskite nanocrystals (HP NCs) based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted serious attention along with relatively unstable bulk HP‐based thin‐film solar cells aiming to make more efficient and stable PSCs. HP NCs have still limited employment in PSCs despite their inherent unique properties such as strong absorption and photoluminescence, controlled transport and charge‐carrier mobility, low defect density, solution processability, and compatibility with large‐scale deposition techniques suitable for PSCs. Nanostructuring of the perovskites offers other unique characteristics such as confinement effects. These exciting characteristics together with the exceptional tunability in their shape, composition, and functionalities make HP NCs promising for PVs applications. In order to develop efficient HP NCs PSCs, major focus lies on discussing the various synthesis approaches, optoelectrical behaviors of HP NCs, and optimized device architectures. In this context, this review article deals with various approaches to HP NCs synthesis, properties, current challenges, and factors affecting the performance of the NC‐based PSCs. Based on these discussions, perspectives on promising directions for effective utilization of HP NCs toward the improvement and commercialization of the exciting promising material‐based stable and efficient PSCs in the near future are provided.

Six‐Month Outdoor Performance Study of Stable Perovskite Solar Cells under Real Operating Conditions

Perovskite solar cells have sparked great excitement in the photovoltaics community due to their remarkable efficiency, flexibility, and ability to be synthesized at low cost. However, their instability poses a major roadblock to their widespread adoption. Recognizing this challenge, this work describes the performance of stable perovskite solar cells operating under real‐life conditions in the Paris area. Two state‐of‐the‐art 2D/3D (HOOC(CH2)4NH3)2PbI4/CH3NH3PbI3 encapsulated cells are considered – one with maximum power point tracking and hourly current‐voltage curve measurements, and another connected to a fixed resistive load. Their performance is compared over six months, and a detailed analysis is conducted on the cells’ hysteresis and electrical response to varying weather conditions. Although the first cell starts to degrade after a few months of operation, the second one remains remarkably stable, highlighting critical issues with outdoor tracking. Given that the stability of this perovskite solar cell architecture has already been established under controlled standard conditions for over one year, these exciting findings pave the way for the commercialization of perovskite‐based photovoltaic devices.This article is protected by copyright. Crystallization management and defect passivation via additive engineering for efficient and stable carbon-based CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells

Inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted enormous interest due to their excellent thermal stability and immense potential for application in tandem solar cells. However, the rambunctious crystallization and poor film quality of inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite are the main factors limiting their performance improvement. Herein, dibenzoylmethane (DBM), containing electron-rich and dual CO functional groups, as an efficient precursor additive, is first introduced to regulate the crystallization of CsPbI2Br perovskite while passivating its associated defects. After DBM modification, nucleation is accelerated and the crystallinity of CsPbI2Br film is improved, thus promoting the phase stability. Additionally, DBM can passivate uncoordinated Pb2+ defects, thereby significantly reducing non-radiative recombination, and can also decrease the energy level difference between CsPbI2Br/Carbon. As a result, when DBM additive is incorporated in the CsPbI2Br, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the device with the fluorine doped tin oxide glass (FTO)/SnO2/CsPbI2Br/Carbon structure is significantly improved to 13.46 %, an increase of nearly 13 % compared to the control device (11.72 %). The unpackaged devices exhibit excellent air and thermal stability, still remaining over 90 % of its initial PCE after aging for 500 h under ambient conditions, or continuous heating at 65 °C in glovebox for 500 h, respectively.

Managing Interfacial Defects and Charge-Carriers Dynamics by a Cesium-Doped SnO2 for Air Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

A high-quality nanostructured tin oxide (SnO2) has garnered massive attention as an electron transport layer (ETL) for efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). SnO2 is considered the most effective alternative to titanium oxide (TiO2) as ETL because of its low-temperature processing and promising optical and electrical characteristics. However, some essential modifications are still required to further improve the intrinsic characteristics of SnO2, such as mismatch band alignments, charge extraction, transportation, conductivity, and interfacial recombination losses. Herein, an inorganic-based cesium (Cs) dopant is used to modify the SnO2 ETL and to investigate the impact of Cs-dopant in curing interfacial defects, charge-carrier dynamics, and improving the optoelectronic characteristics of PSCs. The incorporation of Cs contents efficiently improves the perovskite film quality by enhancing the transparency, crystallinity, grain size, and light absorption and reduces the defect states and trap densities, resulting in an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ≈22.1% with Cs:SnO2 ETL, in-contrast to pristine SnO2-based PSCs (20.23%). Moreover, the Cs-modified SnO2-based PSCs exhibit remarkable environmental stability in a relatively higher relative humidity environment (>65%) and without encapsulation. Therefore, this work suggests that Cs-doped SnO2 is a highly favorable electron extraction material for preparing highly efficient and air-stable planar PSCs.

Stability is the most pressing challenge hindering the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and previous efforts focused more on enhancing the resistance of PSCs to external stimulus. Here, we found that the indium tin oxide (ITO) will deteriorate the photovoltaic performance of PSCs through positive feedback cycles. Specifically, the perovskite degradation products will cross the electron transport layer to chemically etch the electrode ITO to generate In3+, which will migrate upwards into the perovskite film. Then, the reaction that corrodes ITO consumes the decomposition products of perovskite and shifts the balance of the perovskite decomposition reaction, further promoting the degradation and thus falling into a positive feedback cycle. Moreover, the In3+ in the perovskite film was found to accumulate at the upper surface, which would lead to n-type doping of perovskite film to form the energy barrier for interface carrier extraction. Subsequently, the chelating molecule ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na) was introduced onto ITO to firmly chelate the In3+ and prevent it from migrating upward, thus breaking this internal positive feedback cycle and significantly enhancing the efficiency and stability of PSCs. This work provides new perspectives for understanding the mechanism of photovoltaic performance loss and ionic transport in PSCs.

Eliminating Non-Corner-Sharing Octahedral for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells.

The metal halide (BX6)4- octahedron, where B represents a metal cation and X represents a halide anion, is regarded as the fundamental structural and functional unit of metal halide perovskites. However, the influence of the way the (BX6)4- octahedra connect to each other has on the structural stability and optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskite is still unclear. Here, the octahedral connectivity, including corner-, edge-, and face-sharing, of various CsxFA1-xPbI3 (0≤x≤0.3) perovskite films is tuned and reliably characterized through compositional and additive engineering, and with ultralow-dose transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the overall solar cell device performance, the charge carrier lifetime, the open-circuit voltage, and the current density-voltage hysteresis are all improved when the films consist of corner-sharing octahedra, and non-corner sharing phases are suppressed, even in films with the same chemical composition. Additionally, it is found that the structural, optoelectronic, and device performance stabilities are similarly enhanced when non-corner-sharing connectivities are suppressed. This approach, combining macroscopic device tests and microscopic material characterization, provides a powerful tool enabling a thorough understanding of the impact of octahedral connectivity on device performance, and opens a new parameter space for designing high-performance photovoltaic metal halide perovskite devices.

3D Conjugated Hole Transporting Materials for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules.

The orthogonal structure of the widely used hole transporting material (HTM) Spiro-OMeTAD imparts isotropic conductivity and excellent film-forming capability. However, inherently weak intra- and inter-molecular π-π interactions result in low intrinsic hole mobility. Herein, a novel arylamine derivative, termed FTPE-ST, with a twist conjugated dibenzo[g,p]chrysene core and coplanar 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) as extended donor units, was designed to enhance intra- and inter-molecular π-π interactions, without compromising on solubility. The 3D configuration provides the material multi-direction charge transport as well as excellent solubility even in 2-methylanisole (2-MA), and its large conjugated delocalization backbone endows the HTM with a high hole mobility (7.2 × 10-4 cm2V-1s-1). Moreover, the sulfur donors in the EDOT units coordinate to lead ions on the perovskite surface, leading to stronger interfacial interactions and the suppression of defects at the perovskite/HTM interface. As a result, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) employing FTPE-ST as the HTM achieve a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.21% with excellent long-time stability, which is one of the highest PCEs for non-spiro HTMs in n-i-p PSCs. In addition, the excellent film-forming capacity of the HTM enables the fabrication of FTPE-ST-based large-scale PSCs (1.0 cm2) and modules (29.0 cm2), which achieve PCEs of 24.21% (certificated 24.17%) and 21.27%, respectively. In this study, three new donor‐acceptor (D‐A)‐type interfacial dipole (DAID) molecules with hole‐transporting and different anchoring units are designed and employed in PSCs. The formation of interface dipoles by the DAID molecules on the perovskite film can efficiently modulate the energy level alignment, improve charge extraction, and reduce non‐radiative recombination. Among the three DAID molecules, TPA‐BAM with amide group exhibits the best chemical and optoelectrical properties, achieving a champion PCE of 25.29% with the enhanced open‐circuit voltage of 1.174 V and fill factor of 84.34%, due to the reduced defect density and improved interfacial hole extraction. Meanwhile, the operational stability of the unencapsulated device has been significantly improved. Our study provides a prospect for rationalized screening of interfacial dipole materials for efficient and stable PSCs.

Side Chain Functional Molecule Additives for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

AbstractIn the commercial development of perovskite solar cells, the main challenge lies in achieving efficient devices with high stability. Additive engineering in polycrystalline perovskites is considered as an effective approach to address this challenge by passivating surface defects and reducing carrier losses associated with these defects. In this work, the passivation effect of molecules with different side chain groups on perovskites and the role of binding energy in mitigating carrier loss are studied. The findings reveal that the thiophene group is particularly effective in passivating defects and enhancing hole transport. Consequently, devices treated with 2‐thienylmethylamine hydrochloride (TMAC) demonstrate a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.63%. Furthermore, these TMAC‐treated devices exhibit remarkable stability, maintaining over 93.13% of their initial efficiencies after 1200 h of continuous illumination under maximum power point tracking (MPPT). This research presents a pathway to enhance the optoelectronic performance and stability of perovskite solar cells.

Anion Binding Interaction Enhances the Robustness of Iodide for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells.

Owing to the ionic bond nature of the Pb-I bond, the iodide at the interface of perovskite polycrystalline films was easily lost during the preparation process, resulting in the formation of a large number of iodine vacancy defects. The presence of iodine vacancy defects can cause nonradiative recombination, provide a pathway for iodide migration, and be harmful to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (HPSCs). Here, in order to increase the robustness of iodides at the interface, a strategy to introduce anion binding effects was developed to stabilize the perovskite films. It was demonstrated that the N,N'-diphenylurea (DPU), characterized by high anionic binding constants and a Y-shaped structure, provides a relatively strong hydrogen bond donor site to effectively reduce the iodine loss during film preparation and inhibits iodide migration in the device working condition. As expected, the reduced iodine loss considerably improves the quality of the perovskite films and suppresses nonradiative recombination. The performance of the device after DPU modification was significantly increased, with the PCE rising from 23.65 to 25.01% with huge stability enhancement as well.

Bilateral Production Shield Enabling Highly Efficient Perovskite Photovoltaics.

Enhancing the intrinsic stability of perovskite and through encapsulation to isolate water, oxygen, and UV-induced decomposition are currently common and most effective strategies in perovskite solar cells. Here, the atomic layer deposition process is employed to deposit a nanoscale (≈100nm), uniform, and dense Al2O3 film on the front side of perovskite devices, effectively isolating them from the erosion caused by water and oxygen in the humid air. Simultaneously, nanoscale (≈100nm) TiO2 films are also deposited on the glass surface to efficiently filter out the ultraviolet (UV) light in the light source, which induces degradation in perovskite. Ultimately, throughthe collaborative effects of both aspects, the stability of the devices is significantly improved under conditions of humid air and illumination. As a result, after storing the devices in ambient air for 1000h, the efficiency only declines to 95%, and even after 662h of UV exposure, the efficiency remains at 88%, far surpassing the performance of comparison devices. These results strongly indicate that the adopted Al2O3 and TiO2 thin films play a significant role in enhancing the stability of perovskite solar cells, demonstrating substantial potential for widespread industrial applications.
