Spectral stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for a double dispersion equation

ABSTRACT In this article, we investigate the spectral stability of periodic traveling waves for a cubic-quintic and double dispersion equation. Using the quadrature method, we find explict periodic waves and we also present a characterization for all positive and periodic solutions for the model using the monotonicity of the period map in terms of the energy levels. The monotonicity of the period map is also useful to obtain the quantity and multiplicity of non-positive eigenvalues for the associated linearized operator and to do so, we use tools of the Floquet theory. Finally, we prove the spectral stability by analyzing the difference between the number of negative eigenvalues of a convenient linear operator restricted to the space constituted by zero-mean periodic functions and the number of negative eigenvalues of the matrix formed by the tangent space associated to the low order conserved quantities of the evolution model.

Spectral stability of periodic waves for the Drinfeld-Sokolov-Wilson equation

The nonlinear dispersive system is considered in the periodic context. The main goal of the paper is to study spectral stability of periodic traveling waves. We show that under certain conditions of the parameters the cnoidal waves are spectrally stable/unstable and dnoidal waves are spectrally stable for all values of the parameters. The proof relies on an instability index count theory for Hamiltonian system developed in [19].

Spectral stability of periodic waves for the Zakharov system

This paper is concerned with the stability of periodic traveling waves of dnoidal type, of the Zakharov system. This problem was considered in a study of Angulo and Brango [Nonlinearity 24, 2913 (2011)]. In particular, it was shown that under a technical condition on the perturbation, such waves are orbitally stable, with respect to perturbations of the same period. Our main result fills up the gap created by the aforementioned technical condition. More precisely, we show that for all natural values of the parameters, the periodic dnoidal waves are spectrally stable.

Orbital stability of periodic traveling waves for the "abcd'' Boussinesq systems

New results concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for the 'abcd' Boussinesq model will be shown in this manuscript. For the existence of solutions, we use basic tools of ordinary differential equations to show that the corresponding periodic wave depends on the Jacobi elliptic function of cnoidal type. The spectral analysis for the associated linearized operator is determined by using some tools concerning the Floquet theory. The orbital stability is then established by applying the abstract results [2,14] which give us sufficient conditions to the orbital stability for a general class of evolution equations.

Orbital stability of periodic traveling waves to some coupled BBM equations

<abstract><p>In this work, we show some results concerning the orbital stability of dnoidal wave solutions to some Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equations (BBM equations henceforth). First, by the standard argument, we prove the existence of a smooth curve of positive traveling wave solutions of dnoidal type. Then, we show that this type of solutions are orbitally stable by perturbations with the same period L. The major tools to obtain these results are the Grillaks, Shatah and Strauss' general theory in the periodic case. The results in the present paper extend some previous stability results for the BBM equations.</p></abstract>

Periodically kicked feedforward chains of simple excitable FitzHugh–Nagumo neurons

This article communicates results on regular depolarization cascades in periodically kicked feedforward chains of excitable two-dimensional FitzHugh–Nagumo systems driven by sufficiently strong excitatory forcing at the front node. The study documents a parameter exploration by way of changes to the forcing period, upon which the dynamics undergoes a transition from simple depolarization to more complex behavior, including the emergence of mixed-mode oscillations. Both rigorous studies and careful numerical observations are presented. In particular, we provide rigorous proofs for existence and stability of periodic traveling waves of depolarization, as well as the existence and propagation of a simple mixed-mode oscillation that features depolarization and refraction in alternating fashion. Detailed numerical investigation reveals a mechanism for the emergence of complex mixed-mode oscillations featuring a potentially high number of large amplitude voltage spikes interspersed by an occasional small amplitude reset that fails to cross threshold. Further careful numerical investigation provides insights into the propagation of this complex phenomenology in the downstream, where we see an effective filtration property of the network; the latter amounts to a successive reduction in the complexity of mixed-mode oscillations down the chain.

Stability of waves on fluid of infinite depth with constant vorticity

The stability of periodic travelling waves on fluid of infinite depth is examined in the presence of a constant background shear field. The effects of gravity and surface tension are ignored. The base waves are described by an exact solution that was discovered recently by Hur and Wheeler (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 896, 2020). Linear growth rates are calculated using both an asymptotic approach valid for small-amplitude waves and a numerical approach based on a collocation method. Both superharmonic and subharmonic perturbations are considered. Instability is shown to occur for any non-zero amplitude wave.

On the existence, uniqueness, and stability of periodic waves for the fractional Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation

AbstractThe existence, uniqueness, and stability of periodic traveling waves for the fractional Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation is considered. In our approach, we give sufficient conditions to prove a uniqueness result for the single‐lobe solution obtained by a constrained minimization problem. The spectral stability is then shown by determining that the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum and mass at the periodic wave has no negative eigenvalues. We propose the Petviashvili's method to investigate the spectral stability of the periodic waves for the fractional Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation, numerically. Some remarks concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves are also presented.

On the spectral stability of periodic traveling waves for the critical Korteweg-de Vries and Gardner equations

In this paper, we determine spectral stability results of periodic waves for the critical Korteweg-de Vries and Gardner equations. For the first equation, we show that both positive and zero mean periodic traveling wave solutions possess a threshold value which may provides us a rupture in the spectral stability. Concerning the second equation, we establish the existence of periodic waves using a Galilean transformation on the periodic cnoidal solution for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and for both equations, the threshold values are the same. The main advantage presented in our paper concerns in solving some auxiliary initial value problems to obtain the spectral stability.

Stability of periodic traveling waves for nonlocal dispersal cooperative systems in space–time periodic habitats

The current paper is devoted to the study of the stability of space–time periodic traveling wave solutions and positive space–time periodic entire solutions of nonlocal dispersal cooperative systems in space–time periodic habitats. We first show the existence, uniqueness and stability of positive space–time periodic entire solution $${\mathbf {u}}^{*}(t,x)$$ for such nonlocal dispersal cooperative system. The existence of space–time periodic traveling wave solution connecting $${\mathbf {0}}$$ and positive space–time periodic entire solution $${\mathbf {u}}^{*}(t,x)$$ has been established by Bao, Shen and Shen (Commun. Pure Appl. Anal. 18: 361–396, 2019). In this paper, by using comparison principle and a weight function, we further show that the space–time periodic traveling wave solution for nonlocal dispersal cooperative system is asymptotically stable, as long as the initial value is uniformly bounded in a weighted space.

Stability analysis of periodic traveling waves in a model of vegetation patterns in semi-arid ecosystems

Banded vegetation pattern is a striking feature of self-organized ecosystems. In particular, vegetation patterns in semi-arid ecosystems are typical on hillsides, orienting parallel to the contours. The present study concerns a system of coupled reaction–advection–diffusion equations model for this phenomenon and studies the existence and stability of periodic traveling waves in a one-parameter family of solutions. Specifically, we consider a parameter region in which vegetation patterns occur and subdivide into stable and unstable regions as solutions of the model equations. Our numerical results show that the periodic traveling wave changes their stability by Eckhaus (sideband) bifurcation. We discuss the variations of the wavelength, wave speed as well as the conditions of the rainfall parameter by using linear analysis. We also explore how the solution patterns grow when the bifurcation parameter is changing slowly. In order to compare this result with the spatiotemporal pattern in the direct simulation, we show that when it passes a critical value of rainfall parameter a stable pattern becomes unstable and finally disappear. In addition, we investigate the existence and stability of periodic traveling waves as a function of water transport parameter.

On the stability of periodic traveling waves for the modified Kawahara equation

In this paper, we present the first result concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves for the modified Kawahara equation. Our method is based on the Fourier expansion of the periodic wave in order to know the behavior of the nonpositive spectrum of the associated linearized operator around the periodic wave combined with a recent development which significantly simplifies the obtaining of orbital stability results.

Orbital stability of periodic traveling-wave solutions for a dispersive equation

In this paper we establish the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves for a general class of dispersive equations. We use the Implicit Function Theorem to guarantee the existence of smooth solutions depending of the corresponding wave speed. Essentially, our method establishes that if the linearized operator has only one negative eigenvalue which is simple and zero is a simple eigenvalue the orbital stability is determined provided that a convenient condition about the average of the wave is satisfied. We use our approach to prove the orbital stability of periodic dnoidal waves associated with the Kawahara equation.

Sufficient conditions for orbital stability of periodic traveling waves

The present paper deals with sufficient conditions for orbital stability of periodic waves of a general class of evolution equations supporting nonlinear dispersive waves. Our method can be seen as an extension to spatially periodic waves of the theory of solitary waves recently developed in [25]. Firstly, our main result do not depend on the parametrization of the periodic wave itself. Secondly, motived by the well known orbital stability criterion for solitary waves, we show that the same criterion holds for periodic waves. In addition, we show that the positiveness of the principal entries of the Hessian matrix related to the “energy surface function” are also sufficient to obtain the stability. Consequently, we establish the orbital stability of periodic waves for several nonlinear dispersive models. We believe our method can be applied in a wide class of evolution equations; in particular it can be extended to regularized dispersive wave equations.

Numerical Bifurcation Analysis to Study Periodic Traveling Wave Solutions in a Model of Young Mussel Beds

Self-bottomed mussel beds are dominant feature of ecosystem-scale self-organization. Regular spatial patterns of mussel beds in inter-tidal zone are typical, aligned perpendicular to the average incoming tidal flow. In this paper, we consider a two-variable partial differential equations model of young mussel beds. Our aim is to study the existence and stability of periodic traveling waves in a one-parameter family of solutions. We consider a parameter regime to show pattern existence in the model of young mussel beds. In addition, it is found that the periodic traveling waves changes their stability by two ways: Hopf type and Eckhaus type. We explain this stability by the calculation of essential spectra at different grid points in the two-dimensional parameter plane.

Stability properties of periodic traveling waves for the intermediate long wave equation

In this paper we determine orbital and linear stability of a class of spatially periodic wavetrain solutions with the mean zero property related to the intermediate long wave equation. Our arguments follow recent developments for the study of the stability of periodic traveling waves.

Orbital stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for the Kawahara equation

In this paper, we investigate the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves for the Kawahara equation. We prove that the periodic traveling wave, under certain conditions, minimizes a convenient functional by using an adaptation of the method developed by Grillakis et al. [J. Funct. Anal. 74, 160–197 (1987)]. The required spectral properties to ensure the orbital stability are obtained by knowing the positiveness of the Fourier transform of the associated periodic wave established by Angulo and Natali [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 40, 1123–1151 (2008)].

Spectral stability of periodic waves in the generalized reduced Ostrovsky equation

We consider stability of periodic travelling waves in the generalized reduced Ostrovsky equation with respect to co-periodic perturbations. Compared to the recent literature, we give a simple argument that proves spectral stability of all smooth periodic travelling waves independent of the nonlinearity power. The argument is based on the energy convexity and does not use coordinate transformations of the reduced Ostrovsky equations to the semi-linear equations of the Klein–Gordon type.

Stability of periodic traveling waves in the Aliev–Panfilov reaction–diffusion system

We study the two-component Aliev–Panfilov reaction–diffusion system of cardiac excitation. It is known that the model exhibits spiral wave instability in two-dimensional spatial domains. In order to describe the spiral wave instability, it is important to understand periodic traveling wave instability resulting from the model. We determine the existence and stability of periodic traveling waves in the model. In addition, we calculate the stability boundary between stable and unstable periodic traveling waves in a two-dimensional parameter plane. It is observed that the periodic traveling waves express instability by a stability change of Eckhaus type. As a result, a stable wave bifurcates to an oscillating periodic traveling wave. We describe these phenomena by calculating the essential spectra of the waves. Furthermore, we study the stability of the waves as a function of the gaps between two nullclines. In two dimensions, we determine the spiral wave instability based on the stability boundary of the periodic traveling waves.

Stability of Periodic Traveling Waves for Nonlinear Dispersive Equations

We study the stability and instability of periodic traveling waves for Korteweg--de Vries-type equations with fractional dispersion and related, nonlinear dispersive equations. We show that a local constrained minimizer for a suitable variational problem is nonlinearly stable to period preserving perturbations, provided that the associated linearized operator enjoys a Jordan block structure. We then discuss when the linearized equation admits solutions exponentially growing in time.
