Physics of Ice Nucleation and Antinucleation: Action of Ice-Binding Proteins.

Ice-binding proteins are crucial for the adaptation of various organisms to low temperatures. Some of these, called antifreeze proteins, are usually thought to inhibit growth and/or recrystallization of ice crystals. However, prior to these events, ice must somehow appear in the organism, either coming from outside or forming inside it through the nucleation process. Unlike most other works, our paper is focused on ice nucleation and not on the behavior of the already-nucleated ice, its growth, etc. The nucleation kinetics is studied both theoretically and experimentally. In the theoretical section, special attention is paid to surfaces that bind ice stronger than water and thus can be "ice nucleators", potent or relatively weak; but without them, ice cannot be nucleated in any way in calm water at temperatures above -30 °C. For experimental studies, we used: (i) the ice-binding protein mIBP83, which is a previously constructed mutant of a spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana antifreeze protein, and (ii) a hyperactive ice-binding antifreeze protein, RmAFP1, from a longhorn beetle Rhagium mordax. We have shown that RmAFP1 (but not mIBP83) definitely decreased the ice nucleation temperature of water in test tubes (where ice originates at much higher temperatures than in bulk water and thus the process is affected by some ice-nucleating surfaces) and, most importantly, that both of the studied ice-binding proteins significantly decreased the ice nucleation temperature that had been significantly raised in the presence of potent ice nucleators (CuO powder and ice-nucleating bacteria Pseudomonas syringae). Additional experiments on human cells have shown that mIBP83 is concentrated in some cell regions of the cooled cells. Thus, the ice-binding protein interacts not only with ice, but also with other sites that act or potentially may act as ice nucleators. Such ice-preventing interaction may be the crucial biological task of ice-binding proteins.

A galactoside-specific Dalbergieae legume lectin from seeds of Vataireopsis araroba (Aguiar) Ducke.

The Dalbergieae lectin group encompasses several lectins with significant differences in their carbohydrate specificities and biological properties. The current work reports on the purification and characterization of a GalNAc/Gal-specific lectin from Vataireopsis araroba (Aguiar) Ducke, designated as VaL. The lectin was purified from the seeds in a single step using guar gum affinity chromatography. The lectin migrated as a single band of about 35kDa on SDS-PAGE and, in native conditions, occurs as a homodimer. The purified lectin is stable at temperatures up to 60°C and in a pH range from 7 to 8 and requires divalent cations for its activity. Sugar-inhibition assays demonstrate the lectin specificity towards N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, D-galactose and related sugars. Furthermore, glycan array analyses show that VaL interacts preferentially with glycans containing terminal GalNAc/Galβ1-4GlcNAc. Biological activity assays were performed using three insect cell lines: CF1 midgut cells from the spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana, S2 embryo cells from the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and GutAW midgut cells from the corn earworm Helicoverpa zea. In vitro assays indicated a biostatic effect for VaL on CF1 cells, but not on S2 and GutAW cells. The lectin presented a biostatic effect by reducing the cell growth and inducing cell agglutination, suggesting an interaction with glycans on the cell surface. VaL has been characterized as a galactoside-specific lectin of the Dalbergieae tribe, with sequence similarity to lectins from Vatairea and Arachis.

Conservation planning integrating natural disturbances: Estimating minimum reserve sizes for an insect disturbance in the boreal forest of eastern Canada.

Large natural disturbances such as insect outbreaks and fire are important processes for biodiversity in forest landscapes. However, few methods exist for incorporating natural disturbances into conservation planning. Intact forest landscapes, such as in the North American boreal forest, can produce large natural disturbance footprints. They also have the potential to support large reserves but size estimates based on natural disturbance are needed to guide reserve design. Historical fire data have been used to estimate minimum dynamic reserves, reserve size estimates based on maintaining natural disturbance dynamics and ensuring resilience to large natural disturbance events. While this has been a significant step towards incorporating natural disturbance into reserve design, managers currently lack guidance on how to apply these concepts in areas where fire is not the dominant natural disturbance. We generalize the minimum dynamic reserve framework to accommodate insect outbreaks and demonstrate the framework in a case study for eastern spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) in the Canadian boreal forest. Our methods use geospatial analysis to identify minimum dynamic reserves based on a set of spatially explicit initial conditions, and simulation models to test for the maintenance of a set of dynamic conditions over time. We found considerable variability in minimum dynamic reserve size depending on the size of historic budworm disturbance events and the spatial patterns of disturbance-prone vegetation types. The minimum dynamic reserve framework provides an approach for incorporating wide-ranging natural disturbances into biodiversity conservation plans for both pro-active planning in intact landscapes, and reactive planning in more developed regions.

Forest Structure and Composition Diverge Following Harvesting Compared to a Spruce Budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) Outbreak

Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is the most vulnerable species to the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana), one of the most devastating defoliators in the world. For decades, pest managers have advocated for reducing its abundance in the landscape to minimize losses to the spruce budworm (SBW). Although reduction of fir occurred during the endemic phase of the SBW cycle, there is little information about the extent to which this general principle (reduction of fir) was applied during an outbreak and whether it occurs at both stand and landscape levels. The objective of this paper is to compare the effect of insect and harvest disturbances on forest structure during the 1970–80s outbreak in Québec. We evaluate whether, (i) forest management activities targeted fir forests and whether patch size of host species influences management or SBW disturbance, (ii) SBW outbreaks and logging have similar or divergent effects on forest composition. Although data are from an earlier outbreak, they are at a scale rarely studied and will be useful in guiding decisions made at larger scales in the current and future outbreaks. Our results show that spruce was targeted preferentially by harvesting (up to 69% of plots) during the outbreak period, while it represented less than one third of plots defoliated by the SBW. On the other hand, fir stands represented up to 75% of plots that were defoliated by the SBW but less than 35% of plots that underwent harvesting. Harvesting targeted large blocks of spruce forest more than large blocks of fir-dominated forest while the opposite was observed for the SBW. In terms of regeneration, SBW tends to reduce fir and favor spruce recruitment, along with non-host species, whereas the opposite tendency was observed following harvesting. In terms of spatial organization of stands, our results support the suggestion that small stands of fir and large stands of spruce undergo the least SBW damage. Thus, in order to attenuate SBW impacts in the future, efforts should be made to ensure that spruce recruitment is favored and that its abundance increases at both the stand and landscape scale.

However, the mechanism of action of these proteins is still not clear. In any case, it is not simply a decrease in the temperature of normal ice formation. In this work, investigating the ice-binding protein (a mutant form of the antifreeze protein cfAFP from the spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana, which overwinters in needles), we showed that this antifreeze protein does not at all lower the freezing point of water and, paradoxically, increases the melting point of ice. On the other hand, calculations based on the theory of crystallization show that at temperatures of 0 ° to –30°C ice can only appear on surfaces that contact water, but not in the body of water. These facts suggest a new perspective on the role of antifreeze proteins: their task is not (as it is commonly believed) to bind with nascent ice crystals already formed in the organism and stop their growth, but to bind to those surfaces, on which ice nuclei can appear, and thus completely inhibit the ice formation in supercooled water or biological fluid.

Design and Analysis of a Mutant form of the Ice-Binding Protein from Choristoneura fumiferana.

Ice-binding proteins are expressed in the cells of some cold adapted organisms, helping them to survive at extremely low temperatures. One of the problems in studying such proteins is the difficulty of their isolation and purification. For example, eight cysteine residues in the cfAF (antifreeze protein from the eastern spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana) form intermolecular bridges during the overexpression of this protein. This impedes the process of the protein purification dramatically. To overcome this issue, in this work, we designed a mutant form of the ice-binding protein cfAFP, which is much easier to isolate that the wild-type protein. The mutant form named mIBP83 did not lose the ability to bind to ice surface. Besides, observation of the processes of freezing and melting of ice in the presence of mIBP83 showed that this protein affects the process of ice melting, increasing its melting temperature, and does not decrease the water freezing temperature.

I know it when I see it: Incidence, timing and intensity of immigration in spruce budworm

Abstract Incidence of immigration in spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was inferred with rules of thumb and numerical thresholds contrasting closed populations (residents >> migrants) versus populations subjected to major immigration event, based on attributes of daily time series of abundance at light traps (abundance, statistical mode, sex ratio and protandry level). The data set included time series with known migration event (Bas St‐Laurent, QC, 2013), which were used to calibrate numerical thresholds associated with immigration. The study site on west coast of Newfoundland provided a natural laboratory to infer long‐range immigration due to geographic isolation from the mainland, proximity to the coast and low population density at onset of the study. Time series between 2014 and 2016 exhibited trends consistent with scenario of closed population, including low numbers of budworms, limited variation in day‐to‐day abundance and strong level of protandry (males fly seasonally earlier than females). Time series with candidate major immigration event (Bas St‐Laurent 2013, Sally's Cove 2017, 2018) displayed specific combinations of parameters, including: (a) sharp increment (>one order of magnitude) in abundance of both males and females from one day to the next (statistical mode, approximately corresponding to timing of migration); (b) pure (100%) convergence of pulse detection interval (post‐immigration period when migrants with nonzero survival rate are collected at light traps) across traps for males and females and (c) overall absence of protandrous flight. Parameters related to immigration thresholds highlighted that females are more likely to migrate than males, as indicated by increased ratio of females per male during pulse detection interval. Aerial collection of adult spruce budworms with helikite in 2019 confirmed the preponderance of females among true migrants.

Quantifying and predicting population connectivity of an outbreaking forest insect pest

ContextDispersal has a key role in the population dynamics of outbreaking species such as the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) as it can synchronize the demography of distant populations and favor the transition from endemic to epidemic states. However, we know very little about how landscape structure influences dispersal in such systems while such knowledge is essential for better forecasting of spatially synchronous population dynamics and to guide management strategies.ObjectivesWe aimed to characterize the spatial environmental determinants of spruce budworm dispersal to determine how these features affect outbreak spread in Quebec (Canada). We then apply our findings to predict expected future landscape connectivity and explore its potential consequences on future outbreaks.MethodsWe used a machine-learning landscape genetics approach on 447 larvae covering most of the outbreak area and genotyped at 3562 SNP loci to identify the main variables affecting connectivity.ResultsWe found that the connectivity between outbreak populations was driven by the combination of precipitation and host cover. Our forecasting suggests that between the current and next outbreaks, connectivity may increase between Ontario and Quebec, and might decrease in the eastern part, which could have the effect of limiting outbreak spread from Ontario and Quebec to the eastern provinces.ConclusionsAlthough we did not identify any discrete barriers, low connectivity areas might constrain dispersal in the current and future outbreaks and should in turn, be intensively monitored. However, continued sampling as the outbreak progresses is needed to confirm the temporal stability of the observed patterns.

Modeling Climatic Influences on Three Parasitoids of Low-Density Spruce Budworm Populations. Part 3: Actia interrupta (Diptera: Tachinidae)

This article is the third and last of a series of models developed to investigate the impact of climate on the spatiotemporal biology of parasitoids. After two earlier papers investigating Tranosema rostrale and Meteorus trachynotus, this last article concerns the tachinid fly Actia interrupta (Diptera: Tachinidae). An individual-based model of the seasonal biology of A. interrupta was developed to determine the impact of climate on its interactions with two of its hosts, the spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and the obliquebanded leafroller C. rosaceana in eastern North America. The model is based on the developmental responses of ‘the parasitoid’s successive life stages and the ovipositional response of adult females to temperature. It was found that the number of generations this parasitoid undergoes each year varies geographically from two to four, and that its potential growth rate, as dictated by synchrony with larvae of its overwintering host C. rosaceana, is highly patterned geographically and topographically as a result of phenological matching with larvae of obliquebanded leafroller entering diapause in late summer.

Forest insect defoliation and mortality classification using annual Landsat time series composites: a case study in northwestern Ontario, Canada

ABSTRACT Landsat satellite time series annual Best-Available-Pixel (BAP) composites for the period 1984–2017 of the Kenora Forest Management Unit in northwestern Ontario, Canada were sampled and stratified by forest stand conditions and aerial sketch map (ASM) compilations of mortality and defoliation. Pre- and post-disturbance multispectral image and textural data were classified using a logistic regression decision rule for spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana), jackpine budworm (Choristoneura pinus pinus), and forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria). Overall classification accuracy of 79.6% was obtained in a 998 ha sample of 120 forest stands.

Sentinel-2 based prediction of spruce budworm defoliation using red-edge spectral vegetation indices

ABSTRACT This research compares the capabilities of various Sentinel-2-derived spectral vegetation indices (SVIs) in particular red-edge SVIs to detect and classify spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) (SBW) defoliation using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) models. The results showed the superiority of RF in model building for defoliation detection and classification into three classes (nil, light, and moderate) with overall errors of 17% and 32%, respectively. The most important variables for the best model were Enhanced Vegetation Index 7 (EVI7), Modified Chlorophyll Absorption in Reflectance Index (MCARI), Inverted Red-Edge Chlorophyll Index (IRECI), Normalized Difference Infrared Index 11 (NDII11) and Modified Simple Ratio (MSR). Red-edge SVIs were more effective variables for light defoliation detection compared to traditional SVIs such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and EVI8. These findings can help improve current remote sensing-based SBW defoliation detection and monitoring.

Nine-year physiology, nutrition and morphological development of Picea glauca reintroduced by planting in a high-graded yellow birch–conifer stand

ABSTRACTDepletion of white spruce (Picea glauca) in mixedwood forest is a frequent problem, particularly in stands that were high-graded as a result of inadequate silviculture and spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) epidemics. To provide information that will help guide restoration efforts, we assessed the effect of four seed-tree retention (STR: 0, 10, 40 and 60 trees/ha) levels and two scarification (SC: patch scarification and disk-trenching) types on white spruce reintroduced by planting in a high-graded yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis)–conifer stand. We present the 9-year results from the seedling physiology, nutrition and morphology. Physiology and nutrition changed with years, but did not vary with STR levels and SC types. Significant increases in the number of internodal branches, height growth, and total height at the two lowest STR levels and after release suggest that the performance of white spruce in terms of morphology and growth is sensitive to small variations in available light. Because seedling morphology and growth were similar between SC types, a moderate disturbance of the forest floor by disk-trenching would be sufficient at a relatively low cost. Our findings highlight that the STR levels influenced the morphology and growth of planted white spruce seedlings more than the SC types.

Defining the window of opportunity for feeding initiation by second-instar spruce budworm larvae

Establishing feeding sites is critical for the survival of neonate Lepidoptera larvae. Rapid foliar quality changes during leaf expansion create a narrow window of opportunity for establishment of early-spring feeders. We examined the effect of phenological synchrony between black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns & Poggenb.) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) budbreak and spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens)) emergence on the feeding behaviour of young larvae and on overall larval growth and survival under laboratory conditions. We correlated these variables with bud development and foliar toughness during the growing season. Our results show that early-emerging second-instar larvae were unable to feed on either black spruce or balsam fir buds; budworm on balsam fir mined old foliage and exhibited good survival and performance, but those on black spruce remained on the foliar surface and suffered high mortality and low growth. In the second later-emerging cohort, bud feeding gradually increased on black spruce whereas it was already the predominant behaviour on balsam fir, and no differences in performance were observed between host species. Thus, black spruce budbreak constitutes a strict window of opportunity, since larvae are often unable to mine the old foliage. Our results suggest that mechanical toughness could be the obstacle preventing young larvae from mining old black spruce needles. Our findings confirm the importance of second-instar ecology in spruce budworm, suggesting that, if climate warming eventually results in an improvement in phenological synchrony between spruce budworm and black spruce, larval survival may increase.

Landscape host abundance and configuration regulate periodic outbreak behavior in spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana

Landscape‐level forest management has long been hypothesized to affect forest insect outbreak dynamics, but empirical evidence remains elusive. We hypothesized that the combination of increased hardwood relative to host tree species, prevalence of younger forests, and fragmentation of those forests due to forest harvesting legacies would reduce outbreak intensity, increase outbreak frequency, and decrease spatial synchrony in spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana outbreaks. We investigated these hypotheses using tree ring samples collected across 51 sites pooled into 16 subareas distributed across a large ecoregion spanning the international border between Ontario (Canada), and Minnesota (USA). This ecoregion contains contrasting land management zones with clear differences in forest landscape structure (i.e. forest composition and spatial configuration) while minimizing the confounding influence of climate. Cluster analyses of the 76‐yr time‐series generally grouped by subareas found within the same land management zone. Spatial nonparametric covariance analysis indicated that the highest and lowest degree of spatial synchrony of spruce budworm outbreaks were found within unmanaged wilderness and lands managed at fine spatial scales in Minnesota, respectively. Using multivariate analysis, we also found that forest composition, configuration, and climate together accounted for a total of 40% of the variance in outbreak chronologies, with a high level of shared variance between composition and configuration (13%) and between composition and climate (9%). At the scale of our study, climate on its own did not explain any of the spatial variation in outbreaks. Outbreaks were of higher frequency, lower intensity, and less spatially synchronized in more fragmented, younger forests with a lower proportion of host species, with opposing outbreak characteristics observed in regions characterised by older forests with more concentrated host species. Our study is the first quantitative evaluation of the long‐standing ‘silvicultural hypothesis’ of spruce budworm management specifically conducted at a spatio‐temporal scale for which it was intended.

Developmental and reproductive responses of the spruce budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) parasitoid Tranosema rostrale (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) to temperature

The temperature-dependent development and survival of immatures, as well as adult longevity and potential fecundity of the endoparasitoid Tranosema rostrale (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) parasitizing spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) larvae was investigated under laboratory conditions at several constant temperatures ranging from 5 to 30°C. Maximum likelihood modeling approaches were used to estimate thermal responses in development, survival, and longevity. A model describing the effect of temperature on potential fecundity of the parasitoid was also developed taking oogenesis and oosorption into account. In-host and pupal development rates of the parasitoid increased with temperature up to 25°C, and decreased thereafter. Immature survival was highest below 20°C, and rapidly decreased at higher temperatures. Adult longevity decreased exponentially with increasing temperature for both males and females. Highest potential fecundity was reached at 10°C. Considering survival and potential fecundity, the parasitoid seems best adapted to cool temperatures below 20°C. Simulations of the life-history traits under variable temperature regimes indicate that temperature fluctuations decrease survival and increase realised fecundity compared to constant temperatures. The temperature-dependent fecundity model developed can be applied to other non-host-feeding synovigenic parasitoids. The equations and parameter estimates provided in this paper can be used to build comprehensive models predicting the seasonal phenology of this parasitoid and spruce budworm parasitism under changing climatic conditions.

Multiple effects of tebufenozide on the survival and performance of the spruce budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

AbstractAerial application of Mimic® 2LV to rising outbreak populations of the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens); Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Québec, Canada, resulted in high levels of population reduction at spray deposits of 0.5–1.2 μg tebufenozide/g of foliage. Application to potted host trees in outdoor enclosures followed by bioassays revealed multiple effects on spruce budworm survival and recruitment. Chronic (14-day) exposure of late-instars to treated foliage reduced larval survival and also pupal survival, mating success, and fecundity, depending on the product concentration applied. Treatments that produced foliar deposits of ~ 0.5–1.5 μg tebufenozide/g caused high larval mortality. Exposure to deposits of ~ 0.15–0.5 μg/g caused delayed mortality during the pupal stage and reduced the mating success of survivors, while exposure to ~ 0.07–0.15 μg/g reduced the fecundity of mated females. Sublethal exposure did not affect the progeny of survivors, either in egg hatch, survival during diapause, or survival and performance after diapause. Reduced survival during late-larval and pupal stages combined with lower recruitment as a result of reduced mating success and fecundity are likely to play a role in the suppression of Mimic®-treated spruce budworm populations in the years following treatment.

Reproductive Biology and Behavior of Tranosema rostrale (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a Parasitoid of Low-Density Spruce Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Populations

Tranosema rostrale (Brischke) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is an important parasitoid of low-density spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) populations. To investigate the effectiveness of this parasitoid in attacking low-density spruce budworm populations, we conducted a detailed laboratory study on its reproductive biology and behavior including mating behavior, potential fecundity, longevity, host searching, and oviposition behavior. We found that the occurrence of mating increases with the number of males present in the cage but that it drastically decreases when females mated previously. Females may mate multiple times with different males in one breeding session and mating duration is significantly longer when a male mates the second time with the same female. Dissections of T. rostrale’s oviducts showed that it is a synovigenic species emerging with about 17 % of its lifetime egg load and develops most of its eggs in the first three days after emergence at 20 °C. Sugar, but not pollen, significantly increased the insect’s longevity compared to water. Spruce budworm larvae, silk from larvae and damaged balsam fir foliage triggered probing in T. rostrale females significantly more often than larval feces. The sequence of the parasitoid’s behaviors leading to successful attack is described as antennation, probing, insertion of the ovipositor, oviposition, and subsequent disinterest or resuming of the sequence. Defense mechanisms of the host larva such as vigorous movements, biting, and/or regurgitation and behavioral countermeasures by T. rostrale are described in detail.

Seasonal Parasitism and Host Instar Preference by the Spruce Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Larval Parasitoid Tranosema rostrale (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae).

The seasonal pattern of parasitism by a parasitoid can be influenced by many factors, such as interspecific competition and host instar preference. We conducted field and laboratory experiments to describe the seasonal pattern of parasitism of spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) larvae by Tranosema rostrale (Brischke), and to investigate whether this pattern can be explained by interaction with other parasitoid species, or by host instar preference. Larval survival, developmental time, sex ratio, and adult size of T. rostrale developing in different host instars were also measured to further assess the potential importance of host instar on parasitoid life history. Parasitism by T. rostrale increased over the season, reaching the highest rate during the fourth-instar larva, and then decreased again until the sixth-instar. At the same time, parasitism by another parasitoid, Elachertus cacoeciae (Howard), increased over the season, and multiparasitism with T. rostrale suggests potential competition between these two parasitoids. Tranosema rostrale showed no host instar preference when third- to sixth-instar larvae were exposed simultaneously in a manipulative field experiment. The proportion of females emerging from spruce budworm larvae increased over the season; however, no difference in sex ratio was observed in the manipulative field experiment. Only male pupal development time and adult size were marginally increased in fifth-instar spruce budworm larvae. We conclude that T. rostrale's seasonal phenology or competition with E. cacoeciae, but not host instar preference, were possibly responsible for the observed seasonal pattern of parasitism.

Habitat monitoring and projections for Canada lynx: linking the Landsat archive with carnivore occurrence and prey density

Summary Habitat degradation is the leading threat to US federally listed species, but monitoring changes in habitat extent, fragmentation or quality is not generally included in species recovery plans. Consecutive satellite images of the same area through time are commonly used to assess landscape changes, and image data are increasingly used to generate predictor variables for species–habitat models. A time series of satellite images has, however, rarely been used in conjunction with a species–habitat model to map changes in habitat extent or to predict wildlife–habitat dynamics through time. We used a time series of forest disturbance encompassing 16 530 km2 of forestland in Maine to map and quantify change in forest types that influence probability of occurrence (POC) of the threatened Canada lynx Lynx canadensis. Integration with a predictive occurrence model developed from landscape conditions c. 2004 allowed us to retrospectively (1973–2004) assess changes at 2‐ to 4‐year intervals, update predictions (2004–2010) and project the spatial distribution and extent of lynx foraging habitat over the next decade. Between 1975 and 1991, 40% of mature conifer forest in our study area was removed by stand‐replacing harvests, coincident with the last regional outbreak of eastern spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.). As those areas regenerated between 1991 and 2010, POC increased dramatically as broad‐scale habitat conditions for lynx's primary prey, snowshoe hare Lepus americanus, improved. Projections suggest that continued forest regrowth will provide new habitat over the next decade, but fragmentation will increase, and by 2022 the habitat distribution will shift southwards into areas where climate change or interspecific competition may limit lynx population expansion. Synthesis and applications. Conservation planning for vagile species that depend on ephemeral forest types, such as the Canada lynx in the north‐eastern USA, requires habitat monitoring strategies that can adapt to changing landscape conditions. Although Maine's lynx population has increased since the 1990s, we recommend that continued monitoring of lynx habitat and population status is critical given habitat and climate uncertainty. We also recommend that habitat management efforts be targeted not only at areas currently occupied by lynx but also where habitat loss is expected to occur near‐term from succession or in anticipation of the next budworm outbreak.
