An evaluation of the communication effectiveness of water polo: a content analytic study in Greece

The aim of the present study was twofold: to evaluate the communication effectiveness of specific modifications on water polo players' cap; to suggest new ways of further improving the communication of water polo. For the purposes of the study, content analysis was done of published photographs showing water polo teams in action during the 2004-2005 regular season of Division 1 of the Greek National League. The results showed that the sport's communication elements on the players' cap were not effective primarily due to the small size of the cap as it appears in the photographs, and to the angle from which the photos were taken. The study concludes by emphasising the need to improve the cap design and introduce a full swimsuit as a means to increase the area available for communication purposes, as well as by suggesting that the accredited photographers and mass media print and broadcast head shots of players in order to improve the sport's image and communication power.

Sport and Tourism: a potentially conflictual relationship. The case of Marinas in Tenerife

This paper points out the conflicts that can arise in the field of Sports and Tourism through a case study of two marinas on the island of Tenerife (Spain). Following a qualitative approach, the dis- courses of the participants of seven different water sports were analysed. In spite of the traditional opti- mistic approach towards the relationship between sport and tourism, research results showed that con- flicts can arise if this is not carefully managed. Conflicts were found at three levels. First, at a sport prac- tice level, where conflict can arise between the different sports held in and around marinas. Second, at a socio-economic level, conflicts can arise between the different social groups that use marinas. Third, at a tourism level, conflict can arise between tourism development and the use of marinas as a sporting ve- nue. The paper concludes by emphasizing key issues to bear in mind when managing the relationship between tourism and sport, such as the brand image of both sports on the hand and tourism destinations on the other hand, and the social groups that usually play each sport and visit each destination.

An Album of Sports Photography as a Treatise on "The Philosophy Of Sports"The text discusses some attempts to present the most essential characteristics of sport with the use of selected photos showing human situations in different sports disciplines. Two albums are reviewed: the first one offering a more psychological aspect of sports processes, and the other focused more on the dramatic tension in sports and the challenges sport poses for the man. Composing such selected collections of photos is a significant method for presenting an image of sport as an organic cultural entity.

Introduction to the minisymposium on sports imaging in children

The importance of children’s involvement in athletics has been emphasized in recent years by The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports through the United States Department of Health and Human Services, representing one of many countries seeking to improve the health of children through physical activity [1]. The benefits of organized sports for young people are well recognized, including increasing physical conditioning, improving skills, acquiring confidence, gaining a healthy attitude toward competition, winning and losing as well as learning to participate as a team member. Injuries do occur and are part of athletics. The minisymposium on sports imaging in children addresses a variety of events arising from the participation of youngsters in basketball, football, soccer and gymnastics. Understanding the patterns and mechanisms of injury in each sport is important in knowing when and how to use imaging in the young athlete’s care. Not every injury merits imaging, and learning this is also key. For the radiologists, we wish to emphasize that, as in other areas of pediatric imaging, the patterns of biomechanical susceptibility in response to stresses upon the immature musculoskeletal system may be quite different from those in adults. Each of the authors is also a parent who has had to consider allowing a child to participate in various sports. Part of our aim is to provide a resource, not only for healthcare personnel, but also for parents searching for information about injuries and risks in considering their own child’s athletic participation. Accordingly, some of the comments address entities that are not directly related to imaging but were thought by authors to be relevant to a complete discussion of the sport and the young people who participate. The authors have had the experience and pleasure during several years of working together as a team on this project, having been invited to present versions of this symposium as an organized course at a number of meetings. During the last few years, we have learned much from one another and have modified our material in response to comments from our audiences. We are very happy that Pediatric Radiology has chosen to preserve our efforts as a resource that others may find helpful for some years to come.

Gender and images of nature and sport in British and German news magazines: the global and the national in images of advertising

The article has an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on research from gender, media, sport and cultural studies. It considers the discourses of nature and sport in advertising which targets mainly men, in the editorial context of two examples of British and German news magazines, namely The Economist and Der Spiegel, from a critical cultural and gender studies perspective. It aims to outline the relational nature and hierarchical structure of gender reflected in constructs of popular culture; to assess whether promotional discourses of nature and sport are conceived to assert a uniform, global hegemonic masculinity, or whether nationally distinctive target-groups are addressed in specifically national ways. It analyzes the particular gender ideologies contained in commodity advertising that use metaphors of untamed nature and competitive sports to address audiences who are considered to be opinion leaders in Britain and/or Germany. The aspiration towards global competitiveness or neo-colonial domination visualized by wild, virgin landscapes and global sports will be questioned in relation to the concept of global or national identity.

포털미디어의 스포츠 영상을 통해 인지된 섹슈얼리티 요소와 섹슈얼리티 인지도에 미치는 영향 -다음사이트의 사진(이미지)영상을 중심으로-

스포츠선수들에 대한 섹슈얼리티는 '유니폼 관련 섹슈얼리티', '선수의 신체적 특징 관련 섹슈얼리티', '외모관련 섹슈얼리티' 요인으로 구성되었다. 포털사이트의 스포츠 영상에 묘사된 섹슈얼리티가 포털미디어 스포츠 소비자들에게 미치는 영향에 대한 분석에서는 남자 실험집단에서만 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 남자집단의 피실험집단과 남녀경기 처치집단 간 차이가 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 포털미디어의 스포츠 영상에 묘사된 섹슈얼리티에 대한 인지도는 남자집단의 피실험집단에 비해 남녀경기 처치집단이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 포털미디어의 스포츠 영상에 묘사된 섹슈얼리티는 남성스포츠 소비자들에게 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 볼 수 있다. This paper is aimed at studying the sexuality elements and their perceptibility in the sports photographs and images of internet portal media. The sexuality elements are composed of athletes' uniform, body and external feature. In an analysis of sports' users through portal media, there were some differences in an experimental group of men. There was the difference between an experimental group of men and a of men and women sports game. The perceptibility of sexuality imaged by sports images of men and women games in portal media was higher in an of men and women sports game than the experimental group of men. Accordingly, the sexuality imaged through sports images of portal media had a higher effect on sports' men-users.

A fusion neural network classifier for image classification

Neural networks have been commonly used for image classification problems by fusing input features extracted from multiple MPEG-7 descriptors. It is because they can provide better performance than those extracted from single descriptor. However the input feature dimension can be various according to MPEG-7 descriptors. Usually input features with large dimension are dominant over those with small dimension for generating outputs of the neural networks, even though their contribution to output is almost same. In order to solve the problem, we propose a fusion neural network classifier which divides each descriptor by the number of its input features. And we consider the importance of the input features in each descriptor during training the classifier. In the experimental section, we showed the analysis of our method and compared the performance of sports image classification with conventional neural network classifier, using six classes of sports images collected on the Internet.

It has long been understood that the media has the power to shape the representation of social issues and effectively manage the understanding that the public has of the world. Control of information in media centres at major sporting events such as the Paralympic Games is vital if agencies such as the International Paralympic Committee and national affiliates such as the British Paralympic Association are to properly manage the image of elite sport for the disabled. Information that print journalists receive in this environment is already highly mediated and the added influence of editors who often have strong views as to what is appropriate for their target audience means that the final published product often is devoid of cultural understanding of Paralympic sport. As such the shaping of printed media texts related to sport for the disabled is not distinct from the mainstream. However, while there have been numerous studies exploring the media representation of Paralympic athletes, there has been no critical discussion surrounding the actual production of printed media texts around this community. Using ethnographic and anthropological approaches, this article attempts to address this lacuna by researching the lived experience of these media production processes.

This article introduces the design principle and implementation method of the automatic judgment software of terminal in sports competition. Image recognition technology makes the competition management level achieve equality, justice, precision and high efficiency, This actualizing automatic judgment by means of recognition model for sports imaging, which is based on the principle of radio frequency identification (RFID).

Resource Constrained Stream Mining With Classifier Tree Topologies

Stream mining applications require the identification of several different attributes in data content and hence rely on a distributed set of cascaded statistical classifiers to filter and process the data dynamically. In this letter, we introduce a novel methodology for configuring cascaded classifier topologies, specifically binary classifier trees, with optimized operating points after jointly considering the misclassification cost of each end-to-end class of interest in the tree, the resource constraints for every classifier, and the confidence level of each data object that is classified. By configuring multiple operating points per classifier, we enable not only intelligent load shedding when resources are scarce but also intelligent replication of low confidence data across multiple edges when excess resources are available. Using a classifier tree constructed from support vector machine-based sports image classifiers, we verify huge cost savings and discuss how different classifier placements and costs can influence the gains obtained by various algorithms.

The impact of media sport events on the active participation of young people and some implications for PE pedagogy

This article addresses the impact of selected sports media events on the active participation of a group of young people aged 14/15. Its particular focus is on an intense period of media sport coverage during the European Soccer Championships (Euro ‘96), the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships and the Atlanta Olympics and on how a group of British young people articulate ways that consumption of these products creates opportunities and challenges for their own sports participation. The data reported here focus on one aspect drawn from a wider media sport and audience investigation designed within a hermeneutic and interpretative methodological framework. Through daily diaries and interviews this article draws particularly on young people's interpretations of sport and media as competing leisure activities and lifestyle choices; ways in which they perceive that watching sport provides them with new motivations and opportunities for physical activity; and the potential of sport media messages and images to ‘inform and fashion performance’. The results suggest that whilst there are associations to be made in relation to motivation, modeling and performance levels, connections between the intensity of media sport coverage and sustained involvement and improvement in young people's sporting activity remain tenuous. The article concludes by revisiting the author's professional concern in the light of the research process and considers the pedagogical implications for PE professionals to strengthen links between media sport and active sports participation.

Education in Sports Medicine is offered heterogeneously in German medical schools. Efficacy and acceptance among medical students are unknown. The self-image of sports has changed from a traditional, competition-oriented way to adventure, entertainment, wellness and health. Therefore changes of our curricula to a practical oriented way of teaching are required. In this regard a new curriculum was developed. The main focus, besides an interdisciplinary class in sports medicine was to offer practical education in sports to the students. Efficacy and acceptance of the class were evaluated using a questionnaire. 90 medical students (58 male, 32 female) were included into the study . The interdisciplinary topics of the class were graded positively. Most of the presentations were regarded as very useful for the future practice. Empathy and commitment of the professor were keystones to good scores. The "fun-factor" was the key for the success of the practical assignment. Practical training was regarded as fundamental for a sports medicine class. Evaluation of the new concept as well as a discussion of the current practice to teach sports medicine at medical school confirm the need of a more practical oriented education, in order to meet the requirements of sports medicine in a time with changing self image of sports.

Depicting the Sporting Body: The Intersection of Gender, Race and Disability in Women’s Sport/Fitness Magazines

This research examines the relationship between images of sport, disability, gender and race in four U.S. women’s sport/fitness magazines. According to a view of feminism that sees it as addressing all oppressions, these magazines should provide an empowering space for all women, including women with a disability. Rejection of ableism signifies a rejection of the male body standard in sport, serving feminist goals. This study finds that fitness and sport magazines for women, by failing to include athletes with a disability, have also failed to break free from a male/ableist hegemonic body standard. Non-white women with a disability are almost invisible, emphasizing an ableist emphasis on sexual difference. However, it could be that the more each magazine rejects the boundaries of male hegemony, the more likely it is to partially reject ableism by including disability images.
