A compact wideband antenna with high gain based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons

In this paper, a novel wideband antenna with a simple structure and low profile based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) is proposed. The structure consists of periodically modulated corrugated metal strips as transmission lines, a CPW feed, and a ground metal plate as an antenna reflector. The SSPP transmission line is used to convert quasi-TEM to SSPP mode and achieve optimal impedance matching. The prototype of the end-fire antenna has been designed and fabricated. The simulation results show that this antenna can achieve a gain of 10.19 dB, a bandwidth of 146%, and an efficiency of 90% in a wide operating band from 7 to 45 GHz. The proposed design illustrates great potential that includes high efficiency, good directivity, high gain, wide bandwidth, and easy manufacturing.

A low-profile high-isolation endfire MIMO antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons for X-band applications

This work proposes a three-port, low-profile, coplanar endfire multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs). The proposed antenna comprises a coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed SSPPs transmission line (TL). A transition to transform the CPW quasi-TEM mode to the SSPPs mode. The radiator section with asymmetric discontinuities converts the bounded SSPPs waves into radiating waves. The proposed MIMO antenna exploits the inherent feature of high isolation in the SSPPs TL due to its strong field confinement competency. Wider beamwidths for ample azimuth and elevation coverage with a stable pattern in the endfire direction are achieved in the 9.52–11.23 GHz operating band. In the operating band, the MIMO antenna has an average realized gain of 6 dBi. Mainly, it has high isolation below -35 dB (measured) in the operating range, a maximum envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) of 1.5 × 10−3, and a total active reflection coefficient (TARC) value below 0.3. The measured results are closely matched with the simulated ones in terms of S-parameters, radiation pattern, ECC, TARC, and CCL.

Refractive index sensing of spoof surface plasmon polaritons excited on graphene strips based on cylindrical dielectric metasurface coupling

In this paper, we present a novel terahertz plasmonic sensing concept that utilizes a metasurface coupler to excite spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPs) modes on graphene strips. The dielectric metasurface unit cell consists of two silicon cylindrical rods with different radii on a quartz substrate. Vertically incident terahertz waves are deflected by the metasurface, resulting in a transverse wave-vector within the substrate that matches the SSPs wave-vector supported by the graphene strips. This enables efficient excitation of SSPs modes on the graphene strips surface, leading to absorption resonances in the range of 0.420–0.430 THz with a high quality (Q) factor of 152. We then applied this device for refractive index sensing, and the investigation results indicate that the high Q resonances in the absorption spectrum experience shifts with changes in the refractive index of the target substance, with a sensitivity of 110 GHz/RIU. The designed structure in this study exhibits significant potential for applications in trace substance absorption spectrum detection.

Broadside radiation antenna based on tightly coupled spoof surface plasmon polaritons

A spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) is a hybrid mode of a surface wave in the air and electron oscillation within artificial electromagnetic (EM) media, with the dispersion curve lying below the light line, giving rise to many unique EM properties. In this paper, we investigate the EM properties of tightly coupled SSPP (TC-SSPP) modes and propose a slender broadside antenna based on the TC-SSPP. With the comb structure (CS), dispersion properties of different SSPP modes are firstly analyzed under plane wave illumination, and then we introduce a modified SSPP structure, the broadside-coupled (BC)-CS, to excite and guide TC-SSPP modes. Since TC-SSPP modes can be confined tightly around the slender BC-CS, EM waves can be manipulated within a much more compact space, which is favorable for miniaturization, compactness and the light weight of microwave devices. To demonstrate this, we propose a slender broadside radiation antenna based on the TC-SSPP, using a probe as the feed and a finite-length BC-CS as the radiator. Due to near-field magnetic coupling, the SSPP wave can be excited on the BC-CS. By varying the geometric parameters, the antenna can radiate in the broadside direction. A prototype was designed, fabricated and measured. Both the simulated and measured results verify our design.

Multimode and Reconfigurable Phase Shifter of Spoof Surface Plasmons

Traditional phase shifters are mainly focused on phase performance and rarely consider the phase shift between different electromagnetic (EM) modes, limiting their widespread applications. Spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) support EM waves with strong field confinements, giving rise to the time delay of signals. Due to the flexible dispersion behaviors, SSPPs can be engineered at will by designing the plasmonic structure parameters. Benefitting from these characteristics, here we propose a multi-mode and reconfigurable SSPP phase shifter loaded with varactor diodes. By controlling the dispersion behaviors, phase differences between different SSPP modes can be realized, and the phase shift of each mode can be reconfigured. Experimental results show that the proposed SSPP phase shifter can achieve about 240°, 241°, and 340° phase shifts among the fundamental (even) modes, the high-order (odd) modes, and the fundamental and high-order modes, respectively, by switching the bias voltages applied to the varactors. Additionally, the proposed SSPP phase shifter has the capability to continuously tune the phase difference in each mode. Simulations and measurements have a good consistency. This work lays the groundwork for SSPP applications in large-scale integrated circuits and wireless communication systems and has a promising application in Terahertz circuits.

Ultra-Thin SSPP-Based Sheet for Suppressing Microwave Radiated Emission in SiP Modules

System-in-Package (SiP) has been facing the problem of excessive radiation leakage. In this article, a novel technique of absorptive sheet is proposed for suppressing unwanted microwave radiated emission in an advanced high-speed SiP module backed with a heat sink. Different from the conventional periodic resonant structure or absorptive film, the electromagnetic energy is consumed based on the mechanism of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP) in our design. By adjusting the length of the metallic strip to control its k-dispersion characteristics, the SSPP modes could be excited around one frequency point. Therefore, a relatively wide absorption band is created by arranging stepped strips in arrays on a dielectric medium. According to the electromagnetic distribution in the SiP module, SSPP-based absorptive units are circularly arranged to constitute the complete proposed absorptive sheet with adequate absorption efficiency. From the simulated results, the proposed design can provide 90 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\%$</tex-math></inline-formula> absorption performance covering a wide frequency range of 26.3–31.6 GHz, with a substrate thickness of only <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\lambda _{L}$</tex-math></inline-formula> /228 and a total thickness of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\lambda _{L}$</tex-math></inline-formula> /134, where <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\lambda _{L}$</tex-math></inline-formula> is the wavelength at the lowest operating frequency. Finally, the proposed absorptive sheet is fabricated and measured, where measurement results agree well with the simulated ones, which corroborates the feasibility and effectiveness of applying the SSPP-based absorbing techniques for suppressing the radiated emission in microwave and millimeter-wave frequency range in SiP modules.

Absolute and global instabilities driven by Cherenkov interaction between magnetized electron beam and spoof surface plasmon polaritons

In this study, we examine absolute and global instabilities driven by the Cherenkov interaction between a magnetized electron beam and spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with an azimuthal mode number m. The absolute and global instabilities are induced in long and short lengths of the cylindrical corrugated waveguides (CCWs), respectively. The temporal and spatial growth rates have different dominant modes of spoof SPPs that, respectively, affect the absolute and global instabilities. In the experiment, the G-band radiation, which corresponds to the dominant mode in the spatial growth rate, is observed with the short length CCW. In the long CCW, the G-band radiation vanishes because the dominant mode in the temporal growth rate has lower frequency than the G-band cutoff frequency of the detecting system. Our results demonstrate that the instability and the multimode radiation are changed by the length of the CCW.

Negative group velocity characteristics of spoof surface plasmon polaritons

Although there have been many discussions on negative group velocity (NGV), disagreements over its counter-intuitive explanations are still on the way. In this paper, it is proposed that the negative group velocity is just a component of the actual wave group, which has to be accompanied by a positive group velocity (PGV) component. A composite wave with the NGV component propagates forward in the form of a tumbling vortex as an attenuated or evanescent wave. Negative group velocity exists only in the anomalous dispersion band with resonance absorption. This wave group model is confirmed by the NGV characteristics of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) of spiral-shaped periodic units. In this case, the PGV and NGV waves are formed by the resonance coupling of periodic cells, and the composite SSPP modes have both resonance absorption attenuation and vortex cancellation attenuation.

Arbitrary Polarization Syntheses Based on Spin‐Momentum Locking in Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons

AbstractSpin‐momentum locking is universal and an inherent property of evanescent electromagnetic (EM) waves, which transfers the spinning or handedness of electromagnetic waves onto their propagation direction. This motivates an approach to investigate the polarization‐controlled directional transmission or emission. Here, the spin‐momentum locking is demonstrated in spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) waveguides, and momentum‐controlled radiation is further realized in SSPP‐patch antennas. The study shows that the circular polarization of the SSPP‐patch antennas originates from the spin‐momentum locking in the SSPP waveguides and hence is determined by the propagation direction of the SSPP modes. Two examples are presented to achieve ±45° dual‐polarizations and vertical/horizontal dual‐polarizations by combining the SSPP‐patch antenna with hybrid couplers. Finally, a straightforward method is proposed for synthesizing the polarization emitted by the SSPP‐patch antenna, allowing access to arbitrary polarization states on the Poincare sphere. The SSPP‐patch antenna is polarization responsive, shedding light on chiral sensors, Stokes polarimetry, and polarization measurement. Hence, the spin‐momentum locking and the related momentum‐controlled radiations provide additional freedom to regulate the EM waves by engineering the helicity in the SSPP waveguide.

Ultra-Wideband Planar End-Fire Antenna Based on High-Order Modes of Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons

In this article, an ultrawideband planar end-fire antenna based on high-order modes of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) is proposed. First, a quad-band end-fire antenna is designed by using the first four high-order SSPP modes. An SSPP transmission line with gradually decreasing groove depth is used to radiate the high-order modes. Moreover, to improve the gain and sidelobe level at high frequencies, the SSPP units in the quad-band antenna are tilted. Then, an SSPP structure consisting of a periodic array of metal strips is proposed. By adding two arrays of tilted I-shaped strip resonators to the quad-band antenna, the first two bandgaps are eliminated. The proposed antenna achieves a fractional bandwidth of 140.8% from 6.9 to 39.7 GHz. Minimum and maximum measured gains of 6.4 and 15.2 dBi are achieved at 6.9 and 38 GHz, respectively. The proposed antenna has a great potential for applications in imaging and wireless communication.

Direction‐Dependent Janus Metasurface Supported by Waveguide Structure with Spoof Surface Plasmon Polariton Modes

AbstractIn this work, a novel direction‐dependent Janus metasurface (DDJM) supported by waveguide structure (WGS) with surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) modes is proposed. In −z‐direction, linear‐to‐linear (LTL) polarization conversion (PC) can be implemented at the low frequencies by the reflection characteristics of the WGS. And in the +z‐direction, the ultrawideband absorption takes shape due to the SSPP modes, in which strongly localized oscillation of free electrons are confined to the metal–dielectric interface assisted by the WGS. The combination of the WGS and the PC structure finally enables the low‐frequency LTL PC with the high polarization conversion ratio (over 0.9) at 0.87–1.35 THz in −z‐direction, corresponding to the relative bandwidth of 43.24%, as well as the absorption in +z‐direction with an efficiency of over 0.9 in the frequency range of 0.8–1.2 THz. Also the fixed direction‐independent transparent window brought by WGS runs from 1.57 to 1.90 THz when the co‐polarized transmission coefficient exceeds 0.85, occupying a staggered band compared to that of PC or absorption. The favorable properties of the DDJM promise a potential practical application in full‐space electromagnetic wave control and radar stealth technology fields.

Multiscale Plasmonic Refractory Nanocomposites for High-Temperature Solar Photothermal Conversion.

Development of a refractory selective solar absorber (RSSA) is the key to unlock high-temperature solar thermal and thermochemical conversion. The fundamental challenge of RSSA is the lack of design and fabrication guidelines to simultaneously achieve omnidirectional, broadband solar absorption and sharp spectral selectivity at the desired cutoff wavelength. Here, we realize a ruthenium-carbon nanotube (Ru-CNT) nanocomposite RSSA with multiscale nanoparticle-on-nanocavity plasmonic modes. Ru conformally coated on the sidewalls of CNTs enables a spoof surface plasmon polariton mode for spectra selectivity; Ru nanoparticles formed at the tips of CNTs enable a localized surface plasmon resonance mode and plasmon hybridization for omnidirectional broadband solar absorption. The fabricated Ru-CNT RSSA has a total solar absorption (TSA) of 96.1% with sharp spectral cutoff at 2.21 μm. The TSA is maintained at over 90% for an incident angle of 56°. Our findings therefore guide full-spectrum optical and thermal control from visible to the far-infrared.

Spin‐Controlled Reconfigurable Excitations of Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons by a Compact Structure

AbstractThe photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) arises from the spin–orbit interaction of lights and plays an important role in light–matter interactions. The phenomenon of spin‐momentum locking validates photonic SHE with unprecedented abilities in wave manipulation. Here, the directional coupling and spin‐momentum locking in spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP) are demonstrated. The transverse spin angular momentum in SSPP is calculated using effective medium theory and the study shows the spin direction is inherently locked to the propagation direction, thus manifesting the spin–orbit interaction of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The spin‐momentum locking is further verified by projecting linearly and circularly polarized waves onto a scatterer‐SSPP structure. It is observed that the helicity of the incident EM wave governs the propagation direction of excited SSPP modes and the directional coupling originates from constructive and destructive interferences of two orthogonal modes. Reconfigurable transmissions of SSPPs are further demonstrated. The proposed design can find applications in reconfigurable sensors, antennas, and power dividers. This approach demonstrates the spin‐momentum locking in SSPPs and introduces new degrees of freedom to manipulate SSPPs by engineering the helicity and interference of EM waves.

High-Efficiency Conversion From Rectangular Waveguide Mode to Spoof SPP Using Metasurface

In this letter, we propose a method to realize rectangular waveguide mode to spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP) mode conversion using phase gradient metasurface (PGM). By applying a PGM with designed wavevector to the narrow wall of the rectangular waveguide, propagation mode and direction of the guided waves can be conversed and controlled due to wavevector matching. Such system can provide an excellent transition by matching the momentum of the rectangular waveguide mode and the SSPP mode. A smooth bridge between the rectangular waveguide system and the SSPP waveguiding system can be realized with potential advantages in conformal design, super-resolution imaging or signal manipulation. Simulated and experimental results, agreeing well with each other, validated the effectiveness of rectangular waveguide mode to SSPP mode conversion using PGM from 6.96-7.55 GHz. Furthermore, a dual channel rectangular waveguide to SSPP splitter is proposed and validated with applications for dual-channel power dividing and signal transmission, achieving an efficiency of 72.4%.

Enhancing directivity of terahertz photoconductive antennas using spoof surface plasmon structure

Terahertz photoconductive antenna (PCA) is an important device for generating ultrabroadband terahertz radiations, being applicable in various scenarios. However, the metallic electrodes in PCAs, a pair of coplanar strip lines (CSL), always produce horizontal electrode modes in a broad THz band, thus resulting in low directivity in the vertical direction. Here, we introduce spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) structures to suppress horizontal electrode modes in a broad band. The suppression principles are accounted to both the forbidden band of the fundamental SSPP mode and the orthogonality between source and higher-order SSPP modes. In the SSPP-modified PCA, we achieve around 2 dBi higher directivity in the vertical direction compared to a typical CSL PCA. Unlike the narrow bands inheriting from conventional metamaterial resonators, the relative operational band of the SSPP-modified PCA is as broad as 48%. This planar SSPP structure is compatible with the well-developed micro fabrication technologies. Thus, our scheme can be combined with the semiconductor material engineering and plasmonic nanoscale structures for further increasing THz output power.

Multi-band propagation of spoof surface plasmon polaritons by its high-order modes

Compact dual-band and tri-band bandpass filters (BPFs) based on high-order modes of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) are proposed. By using the meander line technique, the electrical size of the proposed SSPP structure was reduced by 68% compared with the traditional rectangular-grating SSPP structure. The high-efficiency passbands are excited by high-order modes of SSPPs. Therefore, dual-band and tri-band BPFs are designed by using two and three high-order modes of SSPPs, respectively. In addition, a notched band is obtained by loading three complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) on the bottom layer of the tri-band BPF. Thus, a quad-band BPF is achieved.

Broadband nonreciprocal spoof plasmonic phase shifter based on transverse Faraday effects.

Spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) have aroused widespread concern due to their strong ability in field confinement at low frequencies. For miniaturized integrated circuits, there is a pressing need for nonreciprocal spoof plasmonic platforms that provide diode functionalities. In this letter, we report the realization of nonreciprocal phase shifting in SSPPs using the transverse Faraday effect. A plasmonic coupled line is constructed by flipped stacking two corrugated metallic strips, in order to enhance the mode coupling between evanescent waves that carry opposite transverse spin angular momenta. With a transverse magnetized ferrite cladding, the SSPP mode is split into two circularly-polarized ones that show different propagation constants over a broad band. A nonreciprocal phase shifter compatible to standard microstrips is designed to validate the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in SSPPs. Microwave measurement demonstrates a differential phase shift up to 46.2°/cm from 12 GHz to 15 GHz. Owing to the advantages of strong field confinement and contactless ferrite integration, the proposed method enables an alternative pathway for nonreciprocal spoof interconnects.

A Windmill-Shaped SSPP Waveguide for High-Efficiency Microwave and Terahertz Propagation

We propose a novel type of spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) waveguide based on windmill-shaped units for high-efficiency microwave and terahertz propagation. The dependence of terahertz dispersion characteristics on geometrical parameters of the proposed waveguide is detailed and investigated. Compared with the conventional comb-shaped and T-shaped SSPP waveguide units, the proposed windmill-shaped unit shows a lower asymptotic frequency and stronger field-confinement characteristics for the supported fundamental SSPP mode. To demonstrate the properties of the windmill-shaped SSPP waveguide, a tapered conversion is designed to connect the windmill-shaped SSPP waveguide and the microstrip for smooth momentum and impedance matching. The simulated results show that the whole waveguide has excellent transmission performance with S11 &lt; −10 dB and S21 &gt; −1 dB from 0 THz to 5.68 THz, as well as a large out-of-band rejection response (S21 &lt; −80 dB). Then, a scaled microwave windmill-shaped waveguide prototype is fabricated and measured. The numerical and experimental results are in good agreement, which further validates the proposed SSPP waveguide design. The proposed waveguide has excellent microwave and terahertz propagation and rejection characteristics, which may have great potential applications in various microwave and terahertz devices and circuits.

Ultrawide-Angle and High-Scanning-Rate Leaky Wave Antenna Based on Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons

An ultrawide-angle frequency beam scanning leaky-wave antenna (LWA) with a high scanning rate based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) waveguide is proposed in this communication. A row of elliptical patches is placed periodically near the SSPPs waveguide, which can shift the fundamental mode of SSPPs waveguide to the fast-wave region and radiate electromagnetic (EM) waves. The simulated results show that the proposed LWA achieves an ultrawide scanning angle range of 172° over a narrow operation bandwidth of 9.8–12.28 GHz, which implies a high scanning rate. The simulated average gain of the proposed LWA is 10.13 dBi and its average total efficiency is 75.35%. The proposed LWA is fabricated and measured. The measured scanning angle range is 167° in the frequency band of 9.9–12.25 GHz, and the measured average gain is 9.73 dBi. Good agreements between the simulated and measured results are obtained, validating the proposed design.
