Contemporaneous high-angular-resolution imaging of the AGB star W Hya in vibrationally excited H2O lines and visible polarized light with ALMA and VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL

Aims. We present contemporaneous high-angular-resolution millimeter imaging and visible polarimetric imaging of the nearby asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star W Hya to better understand the dynamics and dust formation within a few stellar radii. Methods. The star W Hya was observed in two vibrationally excited H2O lines at 268 and 251 GHz with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at a spatial resolution of 16 × 20 mas and at 748 and 820 nm at a resolution of 26 × 27 mas with the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE)-Zurich Imaging Polarimeter (ZIMPOL). Results. ALMA’s high spatial resolution allowed us to image strong emission of the vibrationally excited H2O line at 268 GHz (v2 = 2, JKa, Kc = 65, 2–74, 3) over the stellar surface instead of absorption against the continuum, which is expected for thermal excitation. Strong, spotty emission was also detected along and just outside the stellar disk limb at an angular distance of ∼40 mas (∼1.9 R⋆), extending to ∼60 mas (∼2.9 R⋆). Another H2O line (v2 = 2, JKa, Kc = 92, 8–83, 5) at 251 GHz with a similar upper-level energy was tentatively identified, which shows absorption over the stellar surface. This suggests that the emission over the surface seen in the 268 GHz H2O line is suprathermal or even maser emission. The estimated gas temperature and H2O density are consistent with the radiatively pumped masers. The 268 GHz H2O line reveals global infall at up to ∼15 km s−1 within 2–3 R⋆, but outflows at up to ∼8 km s−1 are also present. The polarized intensity maps obtained in the visible reveal clumpy dust clouds forming within ∼40 mas (∼1.9 R⋆) with a particularly prominent cloud in the SW quadrant and a weaker cloud in the east. The 268 GHz H2O emission overlaps very well with the visible polarized intensity maps, which suggests that both the nonthermal and likely maser H2O emission and the dust originate from dense, cool pockets in the inhomogeneous atmosphere within ∼2–3 R⋆.

Dust Growth and Evolution in Protoplanetary Disks

Over the past decade, advancement of observational capabilities, specifically the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instruments, alongside theoretical innovations like pebble accretion, have reshaped our understanding of planet formation and the physics of protoplanetary disks. Despite this progress, mysteries persist along the winded path of micrometer-sized dust, from the interstellar medium, through transport and growth in the protoplanetary disk, to becoming gravitationally bound bodies. This review outlines our current knowledge of dust evolution in circumstellar disks, yielding the following insights: ▪Theoretical and laboratory studies have accurately predicted the growth of dust particles to sizes that are susceptible to accumulation through transport processes like radial drift and settling.▪Critical uncertainties in that process remain the level of turbulence, the threshold collision velocities at which dust growth stalls, and the evolution of dust porosity.▪Symmetric and asymmetric substructures are widespread. Dust traps appear to be solving several long-standing issues in planet formation models, and they are observationally consistent with being sites of active planetesimal formation.▪In some instances, planets have been identified as the causes behind substructures. This underlines the need to study earlier stages of disks to understand how planets can form so rapidly. In the future, better probes of the physical conditions in optically thick regions, including densities, turbulence strength, kinematics, and particle properties, will be essential for unraveling the physical processes at play.

Radio-continuum decrements associated to shadowing from the central warp in transition disc DoAr 44

ABSTRACT Warps have often been used to explain disc properties, but well-characterized examples are important due to their role in disc evolution. Scattered light images of discs with central gaps have revealed sharp warps, such that the outer rings are shadowed by tilted inner discs. The near-infrared intensity drops along the ring around T-Tauri star DoAr 44 have been interpreted in terms of a central warp. We report new ALMA observations of DoAr 44 in the continuum at 230 and 350 GHz (at ∼10 au), along with a new epoch of Spectro Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE)/Infrared Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph differential polarized imaging taken during excellent weather conditions. The ALMA observations resolve the ring and confirm the decrements proposed from deconvolution of coarse 336 GHz data. The scattered light image constrains the dips, which correspond to a misaligned inner disc with a relative inclination ξ = 21.4 $^{+6.7}_{-8.3}$ deg. The SPHERE intensity profile shows a morphological change compared to a previous epoch that may be interpreted as a variable orientation of the inner disc, from ξ ∼ 30 deg to ξ ∼ 20 deg. The intensity dips probably correspond to temperature decrements, as their mm-spectral index, $\alpha ^{230 \textrm {GHz}}_{350 \textrm {GHz}} \sim$ 2.0 ± 0.1, is indicative of optically thick emission. The azimuth of the two temperature decrements are leading clockwise relative to the infrared-dips, by η = 14.95 deg and η = 7.92 deg. For a retrograde disc, such shifts are expected from a thermal lag and imply gas surface densities of Σg = 117 ± 10 g cm−2 and Σg = 48 ± 10 g cm−2. A lopsided disc, with contrast ratio fr = 2.4 ± 0.5, is also consistent with the large continuum crescent.

BEAST detection of a brown dwarf and a low-mass stellar companion around the young bright B star HIP 81208

Recent observations by the B-star Exoplanet Abundance Study (BEAST) illustrate the existence of substellar companions around very massive stars. Here, we present the detection of two lower mass companions to a relatively nearby (148.7−1.3+1.5 pc), young (17−4+3 Myr), bright (V = 6.632 ± 0.006 mag), 2.58 ± 0.06 M⊙ B9V star HIP 81208 residing in the Sco-Cen association using the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. Our analysis of the photometry obtained gives mass estimates of 67−7+6 MJ for the inner companion and 0.135−0.013+0.010 M⊙ for the outer companion, indicating that the former is most likely a brown dwarf and the latter a low-mass star. The system is compact but unusual, as the orbital planes of the two companions are likely close to orthogonal. The preliminary orbital solutions we derive for the system indicate that the star and the two companions are likely in a Kozai resonance, rendering the system dynamically very interesting for future studies.

Searching for Hα-emitting sources in the gaps of five transitional disks

Context. (Pre-)Transitional disks show gaps and cavities that can be related to ongoing planet formation. According to theory, young embedded planets can accrete material from the circumplanetary and circumstellar disks and can be detected using accretion tracers, such as the Hα emission line. Aims. We aim to detect accreting protoplanets within the cavities of five (pre-)transitional disks through adaptive-optics(AO)-assisted spectral angular differential imaging in the optical regime. Methods. We performed simultaneous AO observations in the Hα line and the adjacent continuum using the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) with the Zurich Imaging Polarimeter (ZIMPOL) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We combined spectral and angular differential imaging techniques to increase the contrast in the innermost regions close to the star and search for the signature of young accreting protoplanets. Results. The reduced images show no clear Hα point source around any of the targets. We report the presence of faint Hα emission around TW Hya and HD163296: while the former is most probably an artifact related to a spike, the nature of the latter remains unclear. The spectral and angular differential images yield contrasts of 6–8 magnitudes at ~100 mas from the central stars, except in the case of LkCa15, with values of ~3 mag. We used the contrast curves to estimate average upper limits to the Hα line luminosity of LHα ~ 5 × 10-6 L⊙ at separations ≥200 mas for TW Hya, RXJ1615, and T Cha, while for HD163296 and LkCa15 we derive values of ~3 × 10−5 L⊙. We estimated upper limits to the accretion luminosity of potential protoplanets, obtaining that planetary models provide an average value of Lacc ~ 10−4 L⊙ at 200 mas, which is about two orders of magnitude higher than the Lacc estimated from the extrapolation of the LHα - Lacc stellar relationship. Conclusions. When considering all the objects observed with SPHERE/ZIMPOL in the Hα line, 5 in this work and 13 from the literature, we can explain the lack of protoplanet detections by a combination of factors, such as a majority of low-mass, low-accreting planets; potential episodic accretion; significant extinction from the circumstellar and circumplanetary disks; and the fact that the contrast is less favorable at separations of smaller than 100 mas, where giant planets are more likely to form.

Disk Evolution Study Through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars (DESTINYS): Scattered light detection of a possible disk wind in RY Tau

Context. Disk winds are an important mechanism for accretion and disk evolution around young stars. The accreting intermediate-mass T-Tauri star RY Tau has an active jet and a previously known disk wind. Archival optical and new near-infrared observations of the RY Tau system show two horn-like components stretching out as a cone from RY Tau. Scattered light from the disk around RY Tau is visible in the near-infrared, but not seen at optical wavelengths. In the near-infrared, dark wedges separate the horns from the disk, indicating that we may see the scattered light from a disk wind. Aims. We aim to test the hypothesis that a dusty disk wind could be responsible for the optical effect in which the disk around RY Tau is hidden in the I band, but visible in the H band. This could be the first detection of a dusty disk wind in scattered light. We also want to constrain the grain size and dust mass in the wind and the wind-launching region. Methods. We used archived Atacama-Large-Millimetre-Array (ALMA) and Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) I band observations combined with newly acquired SPHERE H band observations and available literature to build a simple geometric model of the RY Tau disk and disk wind. We used Monte Carlo radiative transfer modelling MCMax3D to create comparable synthetic observations that test the effect of a dusty wind on the optical effect in the observations. We constrained the grain size and dust mass needed in the disk wind to reproduce the effect from the observations. Results. A model geometrically reminiscent of a dusty disk wind with small micron to sub-micron-sized grains elevated above the disk can reproduce the optical effect seen in the observations. The mass in the obscuring component of the wind has been constrained to 1 × 10−9 M⊙ ≤ M ≤ 5 × 10−8 M⊙, which corresponds to a mass-loss rate in the wind of about ~1 × 10−8 M⊙ yr−1. Conclusions. A simple model of a disk wind with micron to sub-micron-sized grains elevated above the disk is able to prevent stellar radiation to scatter in the disk at optical wavelengths while allowing photons to reach the disk in the near-infrared. Estimates of mass-loss rate correspond to previously presented theoretical models and points towards the idea that a magneto-hydrodynamic-type wind is the more likely scenario.

Gemini-LIGHTS: Herbig Ae/Be and Massive T Tauri Protoplanetary Disks Imaged with Gemini Planet Imager

We present the complete sample of protoplanetary disks from the Gemini- Large Imaging with the Gemini Planet Imager Herbig/T Tauri Survey, which observed bright Herbig Ae/Be stars and T Tauri stars in near-infrared polarized light to search for signatures of disk evolution and ongoing planet formation. The 44 targets were chosen based on their near- and mid-infrared colors, with roughly equal numbers of transitional, pre-transitional, and full disks. Our approach explicitly did not favor well-known, “famous” disks or those observed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, resulting in a less-biased sample suitable to probe the major stages of disk evolution during planet formation. Our optimized data reduction allowed polarized flux as low as 0.002% of the stellar light to be detected, and we report polarized scattered light around 80% of our targets. We detected point-like companions for 47% of the targets, including three brown dwarfs (two confirmed, one new), and a new super-Jupiter-mass candidate around V1295 Aql. We searched for correlations between the polarized flux and system parameters, finding a few clear trends: the presence of a companion drastically reduces the polarized flux levels, far-IR excess correlates with polarized flux for nonbinary systems, and systems hosting disks with ring structures have stellar masses <3 M⊙. Our sample also included four hot, dusty “FS CMa” systems, and we detected large-scale ( >100 au) scattered light around each, signs of extreme youth for these enigmatic systems. Science-ready images are publicly available through multiple distribution channels using a new FITS file standard that has been jointly developed with members of the Very Large Telescope Spectro-polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research team.

The halo around HD 32297: μm-sized cometary dust

Context. The optical properties of the second generation dust that we observe in debris disks remain quite elusive, whether it is the absorption efficiencies at millimeter wavelengths or the (un)polarized phase function at near-infrared wavelengths. Thankfully, the same particles are experiencing forces that are size dependent (e.g., radiation pressure) and, with high angular resolution observations, we can take advantage of this natural spatial segregation. Aims. Observations at different wavelengths probe different ranges of sizes; millimeter observations trace the larger grains, while near-infrared observations are sensitive to the other extreme of the size distribution. Consequently, there is a great synergy in combining both observational techniques to better constrain the optical properties of the particles. Methods. We present a new approach to simultaneously model observations from“Spectro-Polarimetric High Contrast Exoplanet REsearch” (SPHERE) and the“Atacama Large Millimeter Array” (ALMA) and apply it to the debris disk around HD 32297, putting the emphasis on the spatial distribution of the grains with different β values. This modeling approach requires few assumptions on the actual sizes of the particles and the interpretation can therefore be done a posteriori. Results. We find that the ALMA observations are best reproduced with a combination of small and large β values (0.03 and 0.42) while the SPHERE observations require several intervals of β values. We discuss the nature of the halo previously reported in ALMA observations, and hypothesize it could be caused by over-abundant μm-sized particles (the over-abundance being the consequence of their extended lifetime). We modeled the polarized phase function at near-infrared wavelengths, and fluffy aggregates larger than a few μm provide the best solution. Conclusions. Comparing our results with comets of the Solar System, we postulate that the particles released in the disk originate from rather pristine cometary bodies (to avoid compaction of the fluffy aggregates) and they are then set on highly eccentric orbits, which could explain the halo detected at long wavelengths.

Monitoring Inner Regions in the RY Tau Jet

We present multiepoch observations of the RY Tau jet for Hα and [Fe ii] 1.644 μm emission lines obtained with the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme-AO and Visible Aperture Masking Polarimetric Imager for Resolved Exoplanetary Structures (VAMPIRES), Gemini Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph, and Keck/OSIRIS in 2019–2021. These data show a series of four knots within 1″ consistent with the proper motion of ∼0.″3 yr−1, analogous to the jets associated with another few active T Tauri stars. However, the spatial intervals between the knots suggest the time intervals of the ejections of about 1.2, 0.7, and 0.7 yr, significantly shorter than those estimated for the other stars. These Hα images contrast with the archival Very Large Telescope Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research and Zurich IMaging POLarimeter (ZIMPOL) observations from 2015, which showed only a single knot-like feature at ∼0.″25. The difference between the 2015 and 2019–2021 epochs suggests an irregular ejection interval within the six-year range. Such variations of the jet ejection may be related to a short-term (<1 yr) variability of the mass accretion rate. We compared the peaks of the Hα emissions with the ZIMPOL data taken in 2015, showing the brighter profile at the base (<0.″3) than the 2020–2021 VAMPIRES profiles due to time-variable mass ejection rates or the heating–cooling balance in the jet. The observed jet knot structures may be alternatively attributed to stationary shocks, but a higher angular resolution is required to confirm its detailed origin.

The white dwarf binary pathways survey – VII. Evidence for a bi-modal distribution of post-mass transfer systems?

ABSTRACT Binary systems consisting of a white dwarf (WD) and a main-sequence companion with orbital periods up to ≈100 d are often thought to be formed through common envelope evolution which is still poorly understood. To provide new observational constraints on the physical processes involved in the formation of these objects, we are conducting a large-scale survey of close binaries consisting of a WD and an A- to K-type companion. Here, we present three systems with eccentric orbits and orbital periods between approximately 10 and 42 d discovered by our survey. Based on Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopy and high-angular resolution images obtained with the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE), we find that two of these systems are most likely triple systems while the remaining one could be either a binary or a hierarchical triple but none of them is a post-common envelope binary (PCEB). The discovery of these systems shows that our survey is capable to detect systems with orbital periods of the order of weeks, but all six PCEBs we have previously discovered have periods &amp;lt;2.5 d. We suggest that the fact that all of the systems we identify with periods of the order of weeks are not PCEBs indicates a transition between two different mechanisms responsible for the formation of very close (≲10 d) and somewhat wider WD + AFGK binaries: common envelope evolution and non-conservative stable mass transfer.

Large Binocular Telescope Search for Companions and Substructures in the (Pre)transitional Disk of AB Aurigae

Abstract Multiwavelength high-resolution imaging of protoplanetary disks has revealed the presence of multiple, varied substructures in their dust and gas components, which might be signposts of young, forming planetary systems. AB Aurigae bears an emblematic (pre)transitional disk showing spiral structures observed in the inner cavity of the disk in both the submillimeter (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA); 1.3 mm, 12CO) and near-infrared (Spectro-polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research; 1.5–2.5 μm) wavelengths, which have been claimed to arise from dynamical interactions with a massive companion. In this work, we present new deep K s (2.16 μm) and L′ (3.7 μm) band images of AB Aurigae obtained with the L/M-band Infrared Camera on the Large Binocular Telescope, aimed for the detection of both planetary companions and extended disk structures. No point source is recovered, in particular at the outer regions of the disk, where a putative candidate (ρ = 0.″681, PA = 7.°6) had been previously claimed. The nature of a second innermost planet candidate (ρ = 0.″16, PA = 203.°9) cannot be investigated by the new data. We are able to derive 5σ detection limits in both magnitude and mass for the system, going from 14 M Jup at 0.″3 (49 au) down to 3–4 M Jup at 0.″6 (98 au) and beyond, based on the ATMO 2020 evolutionary models. We detect the inner spiral structures (&lt;0.″5) resolved in both CO and polarimetric H-band observations. We also recover the ring structure of the system at larger separation (0.″5–0.″7) showing a clear southeast/northwest asymmetry. This structure, observed for the first time at L′ band, remains interior to the dust cavity seen at ALMA, suggesting an efficient dust trapping mechanism at play in the disk.

First observation of a quadruple asteroid

Context. Extreme adaptive optics systems, such as the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch facility (SPHERE), push forward the limits in high contrast and high resolution in direct imaging. The main objectives of these instruments are exoplanet detection and characterisation. Aims. We aim to increase the contrast limits to detect new satellites orbiting known asteroids. We use cutting-edge data reduction techniques and data processing algorithms that are essential to best analyse the raw data provided by the instruments and increase their performances. Doing so, the unequalled performances of SPHERE also make it a unique tool to resolve and study asteroids in the solar system, expanding the domain of its main science targets. Methods. We applied a newly developed data reduction pipeline for integral field spectrographs on archival SPHERE data of a resolved asteroid, (130) Elektra. It was coupled with a dedicated point spread function reconstruction algorithm to model the asteroid halo. Following the halo removal, the moon signal could be extracted more accurately. The moon positions were fitted at three epochs and were used to derive the orbital parameters via a genetic-based algorithm. Results. We announce the discovery of S/2014 (130) 2, a third moon orbiting (130) Elektra, making it the first quadruple asteroid ever found. It is identified in three different epochs, 9, 30, and 31 Dec. 2014, at a respective angular separation of 258 mas (333 km), 229 mas (327 km), and 319 mas (457 km). We estimate that this moon has a period of 0.679 ± 0.001 day and a semi-major axis of 344 ± 5 km, with an eccentricity of 0.33 ± 0.05 and an inclination of 38° ±19° compared to the primary rotation axis. With a relative magnitude to the primary of 10.5 ± 0.5, its size is estimated to be 1.6 ± 0.4 km. Conclusions. The orbital parameters of S/2014 (130) 2 are poorly constrained due to the unfavourable configurations of the available fragmentary data. Additional observations are needed to better estimate its orbit and to suggest a formation model. This new detection nonetheless shows that dedicated data reduction and processing algorithms modelling the physics of the instruments can push their contrast limits further.

Self-consistent modelling of the dust component in protoplanetary and circumplanetary disks: the case of PDS 70

Context.Direct observations of young stellar objects are important to test established theories of planet formation. PDS 70 is one of the few cases where robust evidence favours the presence of two planetary mass companions inside the gap of the transition disk. Those planets are believed to be going through the last stages of accretion from the protoplanetary disk, a process likely mediated by a circumplanetary disk (CPD).Aims.We aim to develop a three-dimensional radiative transfer model for the dust component of the PDS 70 system which reproduces the system’s global features observed at two different wavelengths: 855 μm with the Atacama large millimeter/submillimeter array (ALMA) and 1.25 μm with the Spectro-polarimetric high-contrast exoplanet research instrument at the Very large telescope (VLT/SPHERE). We use this model to investigate the physical properties of the planetary companion PDS 70 c and its potential circumplanetary disk.Methods.We base our modelling process on published ALMA and VLT/SPHERE observations of the dust continuum emission at 855 and 1.25 μm, respectively. We selected initial values for the physical properties of the planet and CPD through appropriate assumptions about the nature and evolutionary stage of the object. We modified the properties of the protoplanetary disk iteratively until the predictions retrieved from the model were consistent with both data sets. Simulations were carried out with the three-dimensional radiative transfer codeMCMax3D.Results.We provide a model that jointly explains the global features of the PDS 70 system seen in sub-millimetre and polarised-scattered light. Our model suggests that spatial segregation of dust grains is present in the protoplanetary disk. The sub-millimetre modelling of the PDS 70 c source favours the presence of an optically thick CPD and places an upper limit on its dust mass of 0.7M⊕. Furthermore, analysis of the thermal structure of the CPD demonstrates that the planet luminosity is the dominant heating mechanism of dust grains inside 0.6 au from the planet, while heating by stellar photons dominates at larger planetocentric distances.Conclusions.A CPD surrounding the planetary-mass companion PDS 70 c is a plausible scenario to explain the substructure observed with ALMA. The heating feedback from the protoplanetary disk has an non-negligible effect on the equilibrium temperature of dust grains in the outskirts of the CPD. The connection between the CPD properties and the planet mass still depends on a series of key assumptions. Further observations with high spatial and spectral resolution also for the gas component of the CPD are required to break the degeneracy between the properties of the planet and the disk.

RHAPSODIE: Reconstruction of High-contrAst Polarized SOurces and Deconvolution for cIrcumstellar Environments

Context. Polarimetric imaging is one of the most effective techniques for the high-contrast imaging and characterization of circumstellar environments. These environments can be characterized through direct-imaging polarimetry at near-infrared wavelengths. The Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE)/IRDIS instrument, installed on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in its dual-beam polarimetric imaging mode, offers the capability to acquire polarimetric images at high contrast and high angular resolution. However, dedicated image processing is needed to eliminate the contamination from the stellar light, instrumental polarization effects, and blurring from the instrumental point spread function. Aims. We aim to reconstruct and deconvolve the near-infrared polarization signal from circumstellar environments. Methods. We used observations of these environments obtained with the high-contrast imaging infrared polarimeter SPHERE-IRDIS at the VLT. We developed a new way to extract the polarimetric signal using an inverse approach method that benefits from the additional knowledge of the detected signal formation process. The method includes a weighted data fidelity term and smooth penalization, and it takes the instrumental polarization into account. Results. This method enables us to accurately measure the polarized intensity and angle of linear polarization of circumstellar disks by taking into account the noise statistics and the convolution by the instrumental point spread function. It has the capacity to use incomplete polarimetry cycles, which enhance the sensitivity of the observations. The method improves the overall performances in particular for instances of both low signal-to-noise (S/N) and small polarized flux compared to standard methods. Conclusions. By increasing the sensitivity and including deconvolution, our method will allow for more accurate studies of these disks morphology, especially in the innermost regions. It also will enable more accurate measurements of the angle of linear polarization at low S/N, which would lead to in-depth studies of dust properties. Finally, the method will enable more accurate measurements of the polarized intensity, which is critical for the construction of scattering phase functions.

Lessons learned from SPHERE for the astrometric strategy of the next generation of exoplanet imaging instruments

Measuring the orbits of directly imaged exoplanets requires precise astrometry at the milliarcsec level over long periods of time due to their wide separation to the stars (≳10 au) and long orbital period (≳20 yr). To reach this challenging goal, a specific strategy was implemented for the instrument Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research (SPHERE), the first dedicated exoplanet imaging instrument at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). A key part of this strategy relies on the astrometric stability of the instrument over time. We monitored for five years the evolution of the optical distortion, pixel scale, and orientation to the True North of SPHERE images using the near-infrared instrument IRDIS. We show that the instrument calibration achieves a positional stability of ∼1 mas over 2″ field of views. We also discuss the SPHERE astrometric strategy, issues encountered in the course of the on-sky operations, and lessons learned for the next generation of exoplanet imaging instruments on the Extremely Large Telescope being built by ESO.

Evidence for differentiation of the most primitive small bodies

Context. Dynamical models of Solar System evolution have suggested that the so-called P- and D-type volatile-rich asteroids formed in the outer Solar System beyond Neptune’s orbit and may be genetically related to the Jupiter Trojans, comets, and small Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). Indeed, the spectral properties of P- and D-type asteroids resemble that of anhydrous cometary dust. Aims. We aim to gain insights into the above classes of bodies by characterizing the internal structure of a large P- and D-type asteroid. Methods. We report high-angular-resolution imaging observations of the P-type asteroid (87) Sylvia with the Very Large Telescope Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument. These images were used to reconstruct the 3D shape of Sylvia. Our images together with those obtained in the past with large ground-based telescopes were used to study the dynamics of its two satellites. We also modeled Sylvia’s thermal evolution. Results. The shape of Sylvia appears flattened and elongated (a/b ~1.45; a/c ~1.84). We derive a volume-equivalent diameter of 271 ± 5 km and a low density of 1378 ± 45 kg m−3. The two satellites orbit Sylvia on circular, equatorial orbits. The oblateness of Sylvia should imply a detectable nodal precession which contrasts with the fully-Keplerian dynamics of its two satellites. This reveals an inhomogeneous internal structure, suggesting that Sylvia is differentiated. Conclusions. Sylvia’s low density and differentiated interior can be explained by partial melting and mass redistribution through water percolation. The outer shell should be composed of material similar to interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) and the core should be similar to aqueously altered IDPs or carbonaceous chondrite meteorites such as the Tagish Lake meteorite. Numerical simulations of the thermal evolution of Sylvia show that for a body of such a size, partial melting was unavoidable due to the decay of long-lived radionuclides. In addition, we show that bodies as small as 130–150 km in diameter should have followed a similar thermal evolution, while smaller objects, such as comets and the KBO Arrokoth, must have remained pristine, which is in agreement with in situ observations of these bodies. NASA Lucy mission target (617) Patroclus (diameter ≈140 km) may, however, be differentiated.

How many suns are in the sky? A SPHERE multiplicity survey of exoplanet host stars

Aims. We are studying the influence of stellar multiplicity on exoplanet systems and, in particular, systems that have been detected via radial-velocity searches. We are specifically interested in the closest companions as they would have a strong influence on the evolution of the original planet-forming disks. In this study, we present new companions that have been detected during our ongoing survey of exoplanet hosts with VLT/SPHERE (Spectro-Polarimetric High-Contrast Exoplanet Research). Methods. We are using the extreme adaptive optics imager SPHERE at the ESO/VLT to search for faint (sub)stellar companions. We utilized the classical coronagraphic imaging mode to perform a snapshot survey (3–6 min integration time) of exoplanet host stars in the Ks-band. Results. We detected new stellar companions to the exoplanet host stars HD 1666, HIP 68468, HIP 107773, and HD 109271. With an angular separation of only 0.38′′ (40 au of projected separation), HIP 107773 is among the closest companions found for exoplanet host stars. The presence of the stellar companion explains the linear radial-velocity trend seen in the system. At such a small separation, the companion likely had a significant influence on the evolution of the planet-forming disk around the primary star. We find that the companion in the HD 1666 system may well be responsible for the high orbit eccentricity (0.63) of the detected Jupiter class planet, making this system one of only a few where such a connection can be established. A cross-match with the Gaia DR2 catalog shows, furthermore, that the near infrared faint companion around HD 109271 was detected in the optical and it is significantly brighter than in the near infrared, making it a white dwarf companion.

Investigating three Sirius-like systems with SPHERE

Context. Sirius-like systems are relatively wide binaries with a separation from a few to hundreds of au; they are composed of a white dwarf (WD) and a companion of a spectral type earlier than M0. Here we consider main sequence (MS) companions, where the WD progenitor evolves in isolation, but its wind during the former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase pollutes the companion surface and transfers some angular momentum. They are rich laboratories to constrain stellar models and binary evolution. Aims. Within the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanet survey that uses the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument at the Very Large Telescope, our goal is to acquire high contrast multi-epoch observations of three Sirius-like systems, HD 2133, HD 114174, and CD-56 7708 and to combine this data with archive high resolution spectra of the primaries, TESS archive, and literature data. Methods. These WDs are easy targets for SPHERE and were used as spectrophotometric standards. We performed very accurate abundance analyses for the MS stars using methods considered for solar analogs. Whenever possible, WD parameters and orbits were obtained using Monte Carlo Markov chain methods. Results. We found brighter J and K magnitudes for HD 114174B than obtained previously and extended the photometry down to 0.95 μm. Our new data indicate a higher temperature and then shorter cooling age (5.57 ± 0.02 Gyr) and larger mass (0.75 ± 0.03 M⊙) for this WD than previously assumed. Together with the oldest age for the MS star connected to the use of the Gaia DR2 distance, this solved the discrepancy previously found with the age of the MS star. The two other WDs are less massive, indicating progenitors of ∼1.3 M⊙ and 1.5 − 1.8 M⊙ for HD 2133B and CD-56 7708B, respectively. In spite of the rather long periods, we were able to derive useful constraints on the orbit for HD 114174 and CD-56 7708. They are both seen close to edge-on, which is in agreement with the inclination of the MS stars that are obtained coupling the rotational periods, stellar radii, and the projected rotational velocity from spectroscopy. The composition of the MS stars agrees fairly well with expectations from pollution by the AGB progenitors of the WDs: HD 2133A has a small enrichment of n-capture elements, which is as expected for pollution by an AGB star with an initial mass &lt; 1.5 M⊙; CD-56 7708A is a previously unrecognized mild Ba-star, which is also expected due to pollution by an AGB star with an initial mass in the range of 1.5 − 3.0 M⊙; and HD 114174 has a very moderate excess of n-capture elements, which is in agreement with the expectation for a massive AGB star to have an initial mass &gt; 3.0 M⊙. Conclusions. On the other hand, none of these stars show the excesses of C that are expected to go along with those of n-capture elements. This might be related to the fact that these stars are at the edges of the mass range where we expect nucleosynthesis related to thermal pulses. More work, both theoretical and observational, is required to better understand this issue.

High-contrast Hα imaging with Subaru/SCExAO + VAMPIRES

We present the current status of Hα high-contrast imaging observations with Subaru/Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics + VAMPIRES. Our adaptive optics correction at optical wavelengths in combination with (double) spectral differential imaging (SDI) and angular differential imaging (ADI) was capable of resolving a ring feature around omi Cet and detect the Hα counterpart of jet around RY Tau. We tested the post-processing by changing the order of ADI and SDI and both of the contrast limits achieved ∼10 − 3 to 5 × 10 − 4 at 0.3″, which is comparable to other Hα high-contrast imaging instruments in the Southern Hemisphere such as very large telescope (VLT)/spectro-polarimetric high-contrast exoplanet research, VLT/MUSE, and Magellan AO. Current wavefront sensing and adaptive optics correction at optical wavelengths empirically depend on airmass, and Subaru/VAMPIRES provide great opportunities for Hα high-contrast imaging for Northern Hemisphere targets.

Polarimetric and radiative transfer modelling of HD 172555

ABSTRACT The debris disc around HD 172555 was recently imaged in near-infrared polarized scattered light by the Very Large Telescope’s Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument. Here we present optical aperture polarization measurements of HD 172555 by the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI), and its successor HIPPI-2 on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We seek to refine constraints on the disc’s constituent dust grains by combining our polarimetric measurements with available infrared and millimetre photometry to model the scattered light and continuum emission from the disc. We model the disc using the 3D radiative transfer code hyperion, assuming the orientation and extent of the disc as obtained from the SPHERE observation. After correction for the interstellar medium contribution, our multiwavelength HIPPI/-2 observations (both magnitude and orientation) are consistent with the recent SPHERE polarization measurement with a fractional polarization p = 62.4 ± 5.2 ppm at 722.3 nm, and a position angle θ = 67° ± 3°. The multiwavelength polarization can be adequately replicated by compact, spherical dust grains (i.e. from Mie theory) that are around 1.2 μm in size, assuming astronomical silicate composition, or 3.9 μm, assuming a composition derived from radiative transfer modelling of the disc. We were thus able to reproduce both the spatially resolved disc emission and polarization with a single grain composition model and size distribution.
