Measurement methods for gamma-ray bursts redshifts

In the era of multi-messenger astronomy, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with known redshifts, especially high-redshift GRBs, are a powerful tool for studying the structure and evolution of the early Universe. We review the background, the history, and the application of measurement methods of GRB redshifts in astronomy. Based on different observation targets, two measurement methods are mainly introduced. One is on GRB afterglow, the other is on GRB host galaxy. There are various processing methods belonging to measurement methods based on afterglow, including spectral measurement method of afterglow and afterglow spectral energy distribution fitting method with improved methods. There are also numerous measurement methods based on host galaxy, such as spectral measurement method of host galaxy, template matching method of host galaxy, some automatic spectroscopic redshift measurement methods, and machine learning methods. We subsequently introduce the principles, effects, and performance of these methods. We enumerate several detection and measurement instruments, which have been used in observation. The characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and applicability of the GRB redshift measurement methods are summarized and analyzed. Furthermore, we provide a data set of 611 GRBs with measured redshift. The data set has been collected since 1997. Analysis and statistics are presented based on this data set. We summarize the characteristics of GRBs such as location, time, and accuracy. Finally, we introduce Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) mission dedicated to searching high redshift GRBs. We also introduce the application prospect of various redshift measurement methods in SVOM mission.

Early Results from GLASS-JWST. X. Rest-frame UV-optical Properties of Galaxies at 7 < z < 9

We present the first James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam-led determination of 7 < z < 9 galaxy properties based on broadband imaging from 0.8 to 5 μm as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science program. This is the deepest data set acquired at these wavelengths to date, with an angular resolution ≲0.″14. We robustly identify 13 galaxies with signal-to-noise ratio ≳ 8 in F444W from 8 arcmin2 of data at m AB ≤ 28 from a combination of dropout and photometric redshift selection. From simulated data modeling, we estimate the dropout sample purity to be ≳90%. We find that the number density of these F444W-selected sources is broadly consistent with expectations from the UV luminosity function determined from Hubble Space Telescope data. We characterize galaxy physical properties using a Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting method, finding a median stellar mass of 108.5 M ⊙ and age 140 Myr, indicating they started ionizing their surroundings at redshift z > 9.5. Their star formation main sequence is consistent with predictions from simulations. Lastly, we introduce an analytical framework to constrain main-sequence evolution at z > 7 based on galaxy ages and basic assumptions, through which we find results consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. While this work only gives a glimpse of the properties of typical galaxies that are thought to drive the reionization of the universe, it clearly shows the potential of JWST to unveil unprecedented details of galaxy formation in the first billion years.

Ultra-diffuse Galaxies as Extreme Star-forming Environments. I. Mapping Star Formation in H i-rich UDGs

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are both extreme products of galaxy evolution and extreme environments in which to test our understanding of star formation. In this work, we contrast the spatially resolved star formation activity of a sample of 22 H i-selected UDGs and 35 low-mass galaxies from the NASA Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog within 120 Mpc. We employ a new joint spectral energy distribution fitting method to compute star formation rate and stellar mass surface density maps that leverage the high spatial resolution optical imaging data of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program and the UV coverage of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, along with H i radial profiles estimated from a subset of galaxies that have spatially resolved H i maps. We find that UDGs have low star formation efficiencies as a function of their atomic gas down to scales of 500 pc. We additionally find that the stellar mass-weighted sizes of our UDG sample are unremarkable when considered as a function of their H i mass—their stellar sizes are comparable to NSA dwarfs at fixed H i mass. This is a natural result in the picture where UDGs are forming stars normally, but at low efficiencies. We compare our results to predictions from contemporary models of galaxy formation, and find in particular that our observations are difficult to reproduce in models where UDGs undergo stellar expansion due to vigorous star formation feedback should bursty star formation be required down to z = 0.

Ultra-diffuse Galaxies as Extreme Star-forming Environments. II. Star Formation and Pressure Balance in H i-rich UDGs

In addition to occupying the extreme, diffuse tail of the dwarf galaxy population, ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are themselves a key laboratory in which to study star formation in extreme low-density environments. In the second paper of this series, we compare the spatially resolved star formation activity of 22 H i-selected UDGs and 21 “normal” dwarf galaxies within 120 Mpc to predictions within the pressure-regulated, feedback-modulated (PRFM) theory of star formation. To do so, we employ a joint spectral energy distribution fitting method that allows us to estimate star formation rate and stellar mass surface density from UV-optical imaging. We find that the PRFM framework extends successfully to the UDG regime—although the UDGs in our sample show unusually low star formation rate surface densities given their H i content, this low star formation efficiency can be naturally explained by the diffuse structure of the UDGs. In fact, when cast in the PRFM framework, the relationship between midplane pressure and star formation in the UDG sample is in good agreement not only with the “normal” dwarf reference sample, but also with measurements from more massive galaxies. Our results suggest that despite their low star formation efficiencies, the H i-rich UDGs need not be forming stars in an exotic manner. We also find that the UDGs are likely H2 poor compared even to the overall dwarf population.

The Role of Binarity and Stellar Rotation in the Split Main Sequence of NGC 2422

In addition to the extended main-sequence turnoffs widely found in young and intermediate-age (∼600 Myr to 2 Gyr old) star clusters, some younger clusters even exhibit split main sequences (MSs). Different stellar rotation rates are proposed to account for the bifurcated MS pattern, with red and blue MSs (rMS and bMS) populated by fast and slowly rotating stars, respectively. Using photometry from Gaia Early Data Release 3, we report a Galactic open cluster with a bifurcated MS, NGC 2422 (∼90 Myr). We exclude the possibilities that the bifurcated MS pattern is caused by photometric noise or differential reddening. We aim to examine if stellar rotation can account for the split MS. We use spectra observed with the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope and the Southern African Large Telescope and directly measured , the projected rotational velocities, for stars populating the bMS and rMS. We find that their values are weakly correlated with their loci in the color–magnitude diagram because of contamination caused by a large fraction of rMS stars with low projected rotational velocities. Based on the spectral energy distribution fitting method, we suggest that these slowly rotating stars at the rMS may hide a binary companion, which breaks the expected –color correlation. Future time-domain studies focusing on whether these slowly rotating stars are radial velocity variables are crucial to test the roles of stellar rotation and binarity in generating the split MSs.

Age Spreads and Systematics in λ Orionis with Gaia DR2 and the SPOTS Tracks

Abstract In this paper we investigate the robustness of age measurements, age spreads, and stellar models in young pre-main-sequence stars. For this effort, we study a young cluster, λ Orionis, within the Orion star-forming complex. We use Gaia data to derive a sample of 357 targets with spectroscopic temperatures from spectral types or from the automated spectroscopic pipeline in APOGEE Net. After accounting for systematic offsets between the spectral type and APOGEE temperature systems, the derived properties of stars on both systems are consistent. The complex interstellar medium, with variable local extinction, motivates a star-by-star dereddening approach. We use a spectral energy distribution fitting method calibrated on open clusters for the Class III stars. For the Class II population, we use a Gaia G-RP dereddening method, minimizing systematics from disks, accretion, and other physics associated with youth. The cluster age is systematically different in models incorporating the structural impact of starspots or magnetic fields than in nonmagnetic models. Our mean ages range from 2–3 Myr (nonmagnetic models) to 3.9 ± 0.2 Myr in the SPOTS model (f = 0.34). We find that star-by-star dereddening methods distinguishing between pre-main-sequence classes provide a smaller age spread than techniques using a uniform extinction, and we infer a minimum age spread of 0.19 dex and a typical age spread of 0.35 dex after modeling age distributions convolved with observed errors. This suggests that the λ Ori cluster may have a long star formation timescale and that spotted stellar models significantly change age estimates for young clusters.

Exploring the M-dwarf Luminosity-Temperature-Radius Relationships using Gaia DR2

There is growing evidence that M-dwarf stars suffer radius inflation when compared to theoretical models, suggesting that models are missing some key physics required to completely describe stars at effective temperatures $(T_{\rm SED})$ less than about 4000K. The advent of Gaia DR2 distances finally makes available large datasets to determine the nature and extent of this effect. We employ an all-sky sample, comprising of $>$15\,000 stars, to determine empirical relationships between luminosity, temperature and radius. This is accomplished using only geometric distances and multiwave-band photometry, by utilising a modified spectral energy distribution fitting method. The radii we measure show an inflation of $3 - 7\%$ compared to models, but no more than a $1 - 2\%$ intrinsic spread in the inflated sequence. We show that we are currently able to determine M-dwarf radii to an accuracy of $2.4\%$ using our method. However, we determine that this is limited by the precision of metallicity measurements, which contribute $1.7\%$ to the measured radius scatter. We also present evidence that stellar magnetism is currently unable to explain radius inflation in M-dwarfs.

The K2 M67 Study: Precise Mass for a Turnoff Star in the Old Open Cluster M67

Abstract We present a study of the bright detached eclipsing main-sequence binary WOCS 11028 (Sanders 617) in the open cluster M67. Although the binary has only one eclipse per orbital cycle, we show that the masses of the stars can be derived very precisely thanks to a strong constraint on the orbital inclination: M A = 1.222 ± 0.006M ⊙ and M B = 0.909 ± 0.004M ⊙. We use a spectral energy distribution fitting method to derive characteristics of the component stars in lieu of the precise radii that would normally be derived from a doubly eclipsing binary. The deconvolution of the SEDs reveals that the brighter component of the binary is at the faint turnoff point for the cluster—a distinct evolutionary point that occurs after the convective core has been established and while the star is in the middle of its movement toward lower surface temperatures, before the so-called hook at the end of the main sequence. The measurements are in distinct disagreement with evolution models at solar metallicity: higher metal abundances are needed to reproduce the characteristics of WOCS 11028 A. We discuss the changes to model physics that are likely to be needed to address the discrepancies. The clearest conclusions are that diffusion is probably necessary to reconcile spectroscopic abundances of M67 stars with the need for higher metallicity models and that reduced strength convective overshooting is occurring for stars at the turnoff. At super-solar bulk metallicity, various indicators agree on a cluster age between about 3.5 and 4.0 Gyr.

Galaxy Sizes Since z = 2 from the Perspective of Stellar Mass Distribution within Galaxies

Abstract How stellar mass assembles within galaxies is still an open question. We present measurements of the stellar mass distribution on kiloparsec-scales for ∼5500 galaxies with stellar masses above up to redshift 2.0. We create stellar mass maps from Hubble Space Telescope observations by means of the pixel-by-pixel spectral energy distribution fitting method. These maps are used to derive radii encompassing 20%, 50%, and 80% (r 20, r 50, and r 80) of the total stellar mass from the best-fit Sérsic models. The reliability and limitations of the structural parameter measurements are checked extensively using a large sample (∼3000) of simulated galaxies. The size–mass relations and redshift evolution of r 20, r 50, and r 80 are explored for star-forming and quiescent galaxies. At fixed mass, the star-forming galaxies do not show significant changes in their r 20, r 50, and r 80 sizes, indicating self-similar growth. Only above the pivot stellar mass of does r 80 evolve as r 80 ∝ (1 + z)−0.85±0.20, indicating that mass builds up in the outskirts of these systems (inside-out growth). The Sérsic values also increase for the massive star-forming galaxies toward late cosmic time. Massive quiescent galaxies show stronger size evolution at all radii, in particular, the r 20 sizes. For these massive galaxies, Sérsic values remain almost constant since at least z ∼ 1.3, indicating that the strong size evolution is related to the changes in the outer parts of these galaxies. We make all the structural parameters publicly available.

Spatially resolved stellar mass buildup and quenching in massive disk galaxies over the last 10 Gyr revealed with spatially resolved SED fitting

AbstractDespite decreasing cosmic star formation rate density over the last 10 Gyr, the stellar mass (M*) buildups in galaxies were still progressing during this epoch. About 50% of the current M* density in the universe was built over the last ∼8.7 Gyr. In this research, we investigated the stellar mass buildup and quenching of spatially resolved regions within massive disk galaxies over the last 10 Gyr. We apply the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting method to SEDs of sub-galactic regions in galaxies to derive the spatially resolved distributions of SFR and M* in the galaxies. This namely pixel-to-pixel SED fitting method is applied to massive disk galaxies at 0.01 &lt; z &lt; 0.02 and 0.8 &lt; z &lt; 1.8. We found that massive disk galaxies tend to build their M* and quench their star formation progressively from the central region to the outskirts, i.e. inside-out stellar mass buildup and quenching.

Membership and Dynamical Parameters of the Open Cluster NGC 1039

In this paper, we analyze the open cluster NGC 1039. This young open cluster is observed as a part of Beijing–Arizona–Taiwan–Connecticut Multicolor Sky Survey. Combining our observations with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometric data, we employ the Padova stellar model and the zero-age main-sequence curve to the data to derive a reddening, , and a distance modulus, , for NGC 1039. The photometric membership probabilities of stars in the region of NGC 1039 are derived using the spectral energy distribution-fitting method. According to the membership probabilities () obtained here, 582 stars are cluster members with larger than 60%. In addition, we determine the structural parameters of NGC 1039 by fitting its radial density profile with the King model. These parameters are a core radius, ; a tidal radius, ; and a concentration parameter of . We also fit the observed mass function of NGC 1039 with masses from to with a power-law function to derive its slopes of mass functions of different spatial regions. The results obtained here show that the slope of the mass function of NGC 1039 is flatter in the central regions (α = 0.117), becomes steeper at larger radii (α = −2.878), and breaks at . In particular, for the first time, our results show that the mass segregation appears in NGC 1039.

The Galaxy–Halo Connection in High-redshift Universe: Details and Evolution of Stellar-to-halo Mass Ratios of Lyman Break Galaxies on CFHTLS Deep Fields

Abstract We present the results of clustering analyses of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at , 4, and 5 using the final data release of the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). Deep- and wide-field images of the CFHTLS Deep Survey enable us to obtain sufficiently accurate two-point angular correlation functions to apply a halo occupation distribution analysis. The mean halo masses, calculated as , increase with the stellar-mass limit of LBGs. The threshold halo mass to have a central galaxy, follows the same increasing trend as the low-z results, whereas the threshold halo mass to have a satellite galaxy, M 1, shows higher values at than , over the entire stellar mass range. Satellite fractions of dropout galaxies, even at less massive halos, are found to drop sharply, from z = 2 down to less than 0.04, at . These results suggest that satellite galaxies form inefficiently within dark halos at , even for less massive satellites with . We compute stellar-to-halo mass ratios (SHMRs) assuming a main sequence of galaxies, which is found to provide SHMRs consistent with those derived from a spectral energy distribution fitting method. The observed SHMRs are in good agreement with model predictions based on the abundance-matching method, within confidence intervals. We derive observationally, for the first time, , which is the halo mass at a peak in the star-formation efficiency, at , and it shows a small increasing trend with cosmic time at . In addition, and its normalization are found to be almost unchanged during . Our study provides observational evidence that galaxy formation is ubiquitously most efficient near a halo mass of over cosmic time.

AWISECENSUS OF YOUNG STELLAR OBJECTS IN THE PERSEUS OB2 ASSOCIATION

We have performed a Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer based study to identify and characterize young stellar objects (YSOs) in the 12° × 12° Perseus OB2 association. A spectral energy distribution (SED) slope in the range of 3.4–12 μm and 5σ selection criteria were used to select our initial sample. Further manual inspection reduced our final catalog to 156 known and 119 YSO candidates. The spatial distribution of newly found YSOs all over the field shows an older generation of star formation in which most of its massive members have evolved into main-sequence stars. In contrast, the majority of younger members lie within the Perseus molecular cloud and currently active star-forming clusters such as NGC 1333 and IC 348. We also identified an additional 66 point sources that passed YSO selection criteria but are likely AGB stars. However, their spatial distribution suggests that they may contain a fraction of the YSOs. Comparing our results with the commonly used color–color selections, we found that while the color selection method fails in picking up bright but evolved weak disks, our SED fitting method can identify such sources, including transitional disks. In addition, we have less contamination with background sources such as galaxies, but at a price of losing fainter () YSOs. Finally, we employed a Bayesian Monte Carlo SED fitting method to determine the characteristics of each YSO candidate. Distribution of SED slopes and model-driven age and mass confirms separated YSO populations with three suggested age groups of younger than 1 Myr old, 1–5 Myr old, and older than 5 Myr, which agrees with the age of the Per OB2 association and currently star-forming sites within the cloud.

THE RELATION BETWEEN STAR FORMATION RATE AND STELLAR MASS FOR GALAXIES AT 3.5 ⩽z⩽ 6.5 IN CANDELS

Distant star-forming galaxies show a correlation between their star formation rates (SFR) and stellar masses, and this has deep implications for galaxy formation. Here, we present a study on the evolution of the slope and scatter of the SFR-stellar mass relation for galaxies at $3.5\leq z\leq 6.5$ using multi-wavelength photometry in GOODS-S from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and Spitzer Extended Deep Survey. We describe an updated, Bayesian spectral-energy distribution fitting method that incorporates effects of nebular line emission, star formation histories that are constant or rising with time, and different dust attenuation prescriptions (starburst and Small Magellanic Cloud). From $z$=6.5 to $z$=3.5 star-forming galaxies in CANDELS follow a nearly unevolving correlation between stellar mass and SFR that follows SFR $\sim$ $M_\star^a$ with $a = 0.54 \pm 0.16$ at $z\sim 6$ and $0.70 \pm 0.21$ at $z\sim 4$. This evolution requires a star formation history that increases with decreasing redshift (on average, the SFRs of individual galaxies rise with time). The observed scatter in the SFR-stellar mass relation is tight, $\sigma(\log \mathrm{SFR}/\mathrm{M}_\odot$ yr$^{-1})< 0.3\ - $ 0.4 dex, for galaxies with $\log M_\star/\mathrm{M}_\odot > 9$ dex. Assuming that the SFR is tied to the net gas inflow rate (SFR $\sim$ $\dot{M}_\mathrm{gas}$), then the scatter in the gas inflow rate is also smaller than 0.3$-$0.4 dex for star-forming galaxies in these stellar mass and redshift ranges, at least when averaged over the timescale of star formation. We further show that the implied star formation history of objects selected on the basis of their co-moving number densities is consistent with the evolution in the SFR-stellar mass relation.

Classification of extremely red objects in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

We present a quantitative study of the classification of Extremely Red Objects (EROs). The analysis is based on the multi-band spatial- and ground-based observations (HST/ACS-BViz, HST/NICMOS- JH, VLT-JHK) in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF). Overatotal sky area of 5.50 arcmin2 in the UDF, we select 24 EROs with the color criterion (i – K)Vega > 3.9, corresponding to (I – K)Vega ≲ 4.0, down to KVega = 22. We develop four methods to classify EROs into Old passively evolving Galaxies (OGs) and Dusty star-forming Galaxies (DGs), including (i – K) vs. (J – K) color diagram, spectral energy distribution fitting method, Spitzer MIPS 24 μm image matching, and nonparametric measure of galaxy morphology, and found that the classification results from these methods agree well. Using these four classification methods, we classify our EROs sample into 6 OGs and 8 DGs to KVega < 20.5, and 8 OGs and 16 DGs to KVega < 22, respectively. The fraction of DGs increases from 8/14 at KVega < 20.5 to 16/24 at KVega < 22. To study the morphology of galaxies with its wavelength, we measure the central concentration and the Gini coefficient for the 24 EROs in our sample in HST/ACS-i, z and HST/NICMOS-J, H bands. We find that the morphological parameters of galaxies in our sample depend on the wavelength of observation, which suggests that caution is necessary when comparing single wavelength band images of galaxies at a variety of redshifts.

A Spectrophotometric Method to Determine the Inclination of Class I Objects

A new method which enables us to estimate the inclination of Class I young stellar objects is proposed. Since Class I objects are not spherically symmetric, it is likely that the observed feature is sensitive to the inclination of the system. Thus, we construct a protostar model by carefully treating two-dimensional (2D) radiative transfer and radiative equilibrium. We show from the present 2D numerical simulations that the emergent luminosity L_SED,which is the frequency integration of spectral energy distribution (SED), depends strongly on the inclination of the system i, whereas the peak flux is insensitive to i. Based on this result, we introduce a novel indicator f_L, which is the ratio of L_SED to the peak flux, as a good measure for the inclination. By using f_L, we can determine the inclination regardless of the other physical parameters. The inclination would be determined by f_L within the accuracy of +- 5 degree, if the opening angle of bipolar outflows is specified by any other procedure. Since this spectrophotometric method is easier than a geometrical method or a full SED fitting method, this method could be a powerful tool to investigate the feature of protostars statistically with observational data which will be provided by future missions, such as SIRTF, ASTRO-F, and ALMA.

Dust Absorption and the Cosmic Ultraviolet Flux Density

We study the evolution of the galaxy UV luminosity density as a function of redshift in the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N). We estimate the amount of energy absorbed by dust and hidden from optical observations by analyzing the HDF-N photometric data with the spectral energy distribution fitting method. According to our results, at redshifts 1 < z < 4.5, the global energy observed in the UV rest-frame at lambda=1500 A corresponds to only 7-11% of the stellar energy output, the rest of it being absorbed by dust and re-emitted in the far-IR. Our estimates of the comoving star formation rate density in the universe from the extinction-corrected UV emission are consistent with the recent results obtained with Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at faint sub-millimeter flux levels.
