International comparisons in the field of measurement of specific adsorption of gases and specific surface area of solids: the optimal amount to ensure calibration and measurement capabilities

Indicators of the accuracy of measurements of the most important characteristics of the structure of porous and dispersed materials - specific adsorption of gases, specific surface area, specific pore volume and pore size – are considered. The performance of sorbents, catalysts and membranes in the chemical and petroleum industries, including the purification of substances and materials, depends on the values of these characteristics. It has been established that for mutual recognition of national standards and certificates of calibrations and measurements of porosity characteristics of solid substances performed by national metrological institutes, it is required to organize and successfully participate in three international key comparisons under the auspices of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance: Metrology in Chemistry and Biology of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. The results of the participation of national metrology institutes and designated organizations of Germany, China, Japan, Brazil, Turkey and Russia in three international key comparisons in the field of measurements of specific adsorption of gases (nitrogen, argon, krypton) and specific surface area of solids (zeolite, silicon oxides and aluminum) are presented. Carrying out the optimal number of comparisons makes it possible to register in the Key Comparison Database of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures the measuring and calibration capabilities of the national metrological institutes of the participating countries for various matrices in a wide range of measurements of specific adsorption of gases 0.001–25 mol/kg and specific surface area of solids 0.1–1500 m2/g. Based on the results of these three international key comparisons, 18 of broad calibration and measurement capabilities of the Russian participant, the D. I. Mendeleev Institute for Metrology, were entered into the Key Comparison Database; two of these items are currently undergoing examination, including reference materials produced by this institute. A comparative analysis of the results of measurements of the specific surface area of solids using nitrogen and krypton as adsorbates was performed. It has been established that the uncertainty of the measurement results of the specific surface area is significantly less in the case of using krypton as an adsorbate with a specific surface area of less than 1 m2/g, which is due to the higher values of the relative pressure of krypton compared to nitrogen. The use of calibration and testing laboratories in Russia of certified reference materials of sorption properties presented in the Key Comparison Database of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures will ensure metrological traceability in the field of measurements of porosity characteristics.

Image-based finite element modeling of air flow and thermal transport in Al-fiber-sintered porous materials

In this study, the pressure drop and heat transfer in a heat-transfer tube filled with a sintered porous medium comprising Al fibers were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. We reconstructed the sintered fibrous porous structure and generated a computational mesh using X-ray computed tomography data, and the simulated pressure drop and heat transfer agreed well with those reported by Enoki et al. [2021]. The differences in both the form coefficient and the permeability between two different samples can be explained from the differences in both the specific solid surface area and the porosity. Further, the CFD simulations indicated that thermal conduction of the Al solid phase enhanced the heat exchange between the air and Al fibers. To examine the effect of solid-phase thermal conduction, we generated a model of a heat-transfer tube having an ideal wire mesh structure, in which we introduced the interfacial thermal conductivity between Al fibers and the inner tube wall as additional factors. We also performed CFD simulations with four different shell-region thicknesses and found that even a very narrow gap of 5 to 10 μm heavily affected the heat-exchange performance because of the low thermal conductivity of the shell region.

Assessing XMT-Measurement Variability of Air-Water Interfacial Areas in Natural Porous Media.

This study investigates the accuracy and reproducibility of air-water interfacial areas measured with high-resolution synchrotron x-ray microtomography (XMT). Columns packed with one of two relatively coarse-grained monodisperse granular media, glass beads or a well-sorted quartz sand, were imaged over several years, encompassing changes in acquisition equipment, improved image quality, and enhancements to image acquisition and processing software. For the glass beads, the specific solid surface area (SSSA-XMT) of 31.6 ±1 cm-1 determined from direct analysis of the segmented solid-phase image data is statistically identical to the independently calculated geometric specific solid surface area (GSSA, 32 ±1 cm-1) and to the measured SSSA (28 ±3 cm-1) obtained with the N2BET method (NBET). The maximum specific air-water interfacial area (Amax) is 27.4 (±2) cm-1, which compares very well to the SSSA-XMT, GSSA, and SSSA-NBET values. For the sand, the SSSA-XMT (111 ±2 cm-1) and GSSA (113 ±1 cm-1) are similar. The mean Amax is 96 ±5 cm-1, which compares well to both the SSSA and the GSSA values. The XMT-SSSA values deviated from the GSSA values by 7-16% for the first four experiments, but were essentially identical for the later experiments. This indicates that enhancements in image acquisition and processing improved data accuracy. The Amax values ranged from 74 cm-1 to 101 cm-1, with a coefficient of variation (COV) of 9%. The maximum capillary interfacial area ranged from 12 cm-1 to 19 cm-1, for a COV of 10%. The COVs for both decreased to 5-6% for the latter five experiments. These results demonstrate that XMT imaging provides accurate and reproducible measurements of total and capillary interfacial areas.

Improving stormwater quality at source using catch basin inserts

Stormwater runoff transports contaminants, including gross pollutants (GPs) accumulated on surfaces to nearby receiving water bodies. These may clog storm drainage systems, seal side entry pits and increase dissolved pollutants in receiving water bodies. Best management practices (BMPs) such as oil and grit separators, grassed swales, vegetated filter strips, retention ponds, and catch basin inserts (CBIs) are implemented to reduce stormwater pollutants in urban runoff. However, the information on physicochemical characteristics of the pollutants are still few in literature but important to improve the design of BMPs, considering qualitative aspects, and their operation. CBIs are devices used to remove GPs at source without requiring any extra land use because they are typically mounted within a catch basin (e.g. side entry pit) or existing drain. In this study, improvement of stormwater quality was investigated at two different sites (Subiaco, a residential area and Hillarys Boat Harbour, a commercial-marine-recreational area; Western Australia) where a new CBI made of non-woven polypropylene geotextile was installed in side entry pits to capture GPs at source. Influent and effluent water from the CBIs was collected and analyzed for BOD, COD, TSS and PO4-P with maximum improvements in water quality of 90%, 88%, 88% and 26% respectively. The heavy metals in influent and effluent water were found very low and below the guideline values. Analysis of particle size distribution, specific surface area of solids, SEM images and heavy metal content (Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd) in solids showed that the residential area contained more finer particles than the commercial area but that solids in the commercial area contained greater concentrations of heavy metals than those from the residential area. The specific surface area was found to be higher in the residential area and particles were thought to be largely sourced from traffic. However, these characteristics may be monitored for longer term for more CBIs installed in different locations.

Effect of Arsenic on the Formation and Adsorption Property of Ferric Hydroxide Precipitates in ZVI Treatment.

Treatment of arsenic by zerovalent iron (ZVI) has been studied extensively. However, the effect of arsenic on the formation of ferric hydroxide precipitates in the ZVI treatment has not been investigated. We discovered that the specific surface area (ca. 187 m2/g) and arsenic content (ca. 67 mg/g) of the suspended solids (As-containing solids) generated in the ZVI treatment of arsenic solutions were much higher than the specific surface area (ca. 37 m2/g) and adsorption capacity (ca.12 mg/g) of the suspended solids (As-free solids) generated in the arsenic-free solutions. Arsenic in the As-containing solids was much more stable than the adsorbed arsenic in As-free solids. XRD, SEM, TEM, and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analyses showed that the As-containing solids consisted of amorphous nanoparticles, while the As-free solids were composed of micron particles with weak crystallinity. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis determined that As(V) was adsorbed on the As-containing suspended solids and magnetic solid surfaces through bidentate binuclear complexation; and As(V) formed a mononuclear complex on the As-free suspended solids. The formation of the surface As(V) complexes retarded the bonding of free FeO6 octahedra to the oxygen sites on FeO6 octahedral clusters and prevented the growth of the clusters and their development into 3-dimensional crystalline phases.

High-Density Protein Loading on Hierarchically Porous Layered Double Hydroxide Composites with a Rational Mesostructure.

Hierarchically porous biocompatible Mg-Al-Cl-type layered double hydroxide (LDH) composites containing aluminum hydroxide (Alhy) have been prepared using a phase-separation process. The sol-gel synthesis allows for the hierarchical pores of the LDH-Alhy composites to be tuned, leading to a high specific solid surface area per unit volume available for high-molecular-weight protein adsorptions. A linear relationship between the effective surface area, SEFF, and loading capacity of a model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), is established following successful control of the structure of the LDH-Alhy composite. The threshold of the mean pore diameter, Dpm, above which BSA is effectively adsorbed on the surface of LDH-Alhy composites, is deduced as 20 nm. In particular, LDH-Alhy composite aerogels obtained via supercritical drying exhibit an extremely high capacity for protein loading (996 mg/g) as a result of a large mean mesopore diameter (>30 nm). The protein loading on LDH-Alhy is >14 times that of a reference LDH material (70 mg/g) prepared via a standard procedure. Importantly, BSA molecules pre-adsorbed on porous composites were successfully released on soaking in ionic solutions (HPO4(2-) and Cl(-) aqueous). The superior capability of the biocompatible LDH materials for loading, encapsulation, and releasing large quantities of proteins was clearly demonstrated.

The two-phase flow IPTT method for measurement of nonwetting-wetting liquid interfacial areas at higher nonwetting saturations in natural porous media.

Interfacial areas between nonwetting-wetting (NW-W) liquids in natural porous media were measured using a modified version of the interfacial partitioning tracer test (IPTT) method that employed simultaneous two-phase flow conditions, which allowed measurement at NW saturations higher than trapped residual saturation. Measurements were conducted over a range of saturations for a well-sorted quartz sand under three wetting scenarios of primary drainage (PD), secondary imbibition (SI), and secondary drainage (SD). Limited sets of experiments were also conducted for a model glass-bead medium and for a soil. The measured interfacial areas were compared to interfacial areas measured using the standard IPTT method for liquid-liquid systems, which employs residual NW saturations. In addition, the theoretical maximum interfacial areas estimated from the measured data are compared to specific solid surface areas measured with the N2/BET method and estimated based on geometrical calculations for smooth spheres. Interfacial areas increase linearly with decreasing water saturation over the range of saturations employed. The maximum interfacial areas determined for the glass beads, which have no surface roughness, are 32±4 and 36±5 cm-1 for PD and SI cycles, respectively. The values are similar to the geometric specific solid surface area (31±2 cm-1) and the N2/BET solid surface area (28±2 cm-1). The maximum interfacial areas are 274±38, 235±27, and 581±160 cm-1 for the sand for PD, SI, and SD cycles, respectively, and ~7625 cm-1 for the soil for PD and SI. The maximum interfacial areas for the sand and soil are significantly larger than the estimated smooth-sphere specific solid surface areas (107±8 cm-1 and 152±8 cm-1, respectively), but much smaller than the N2/BET solid surface area (1387±92 cm-1 and 55224 cm-1, respectively). The NW-W interfacial areas measured with the two-phase flow method compare well to values measured using the standard IPTT method.

The Design of Nanostructured Metronidazole-Loaded HPC/Oxide Xerogel Composites: Influence of the Formulation Parameters on In Vitro Characterisation.

In this study, oxide and polymer/oxide xerogels with metronidazole were prepared and examined as carriers of drug for the local application to the bone. The nanoporous SiO2-CaO-P2O5 and HPC-SiO2-CaO-P2O5 xerogel materials with different amounts of the polymer [hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)] were prepared using the sol-gel technology, and their physicochemical properties were characterised with respect to chemical structure [by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)], porosity and the specific surface area of solids (BET), crystallinity [by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD)], morphology [by scanning electron microscope (SEM)] and the in vitro release of the metronidazole over time (by UV-vis spectroscopy, in the ultraviolet light region). HPC-modified oxide xerogels as the carriers of drug showed slower release of metronidazole, due to the structure and stronger interactions with drug as compared with the pure oxide xerogel. Kinetic analysis indicated diffusional mechanism of drug release from all xerogel carriers. HPC addition to the oxide material resulted in a decrease in the porosity and improved the bioactive properties of xerogels. Obtained results for xerogel composites suggest that the metronidazole-loaded xerogels could be attractive candidates for local delivery systems particularly to a bone.

The Role of Polydimethylsiloxane in the Molecular Structure of Silica Xerogels Intended for Drug Carriers.

The aim of this study was to prepare and examine polymer/oxide xerogels with metronidazole (MT) as delivery systems for the local application of a drug to a bone. The nanoporous SiO2-CaO and PDMS-modified SiO2-CaO xerogel materials with different amounts of the polymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), were prepared by the sol-gel method.Characterization assays comprised the analysis of the composite materials by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), determining the specific surface area of solids (BET), using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques, and further monitoring in the ultraviolet and visible light regions (UV-Vis) of the in vitro release of the drug (metronidazole) over time. According to these results, the bioactive character and chemical stability of PDMS-modified silica xerogels have been proven.The release of MT from xerogels was strongly correlated with the composition of the matrix. In comparison with the pure oxide matrix, PDMS-modified matrices accelerated the release of the drug through its bigger pores, and additionally, on account of weaker interactions with the drug.The obtained results for the xerogel composites suggest that the metronidazole-loaded xerogels could be promising candidates for formulations in local delivery systems particularly to bone.

A Molality-Based BET Equation for Modeling the Activity of Water Sorbed on Clay Minerals

AbstractThe Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory models the effective specific surface area and water content of solids as a function of the relative vapor pressure of water. A modified form of the BET equation has been used successfully to model water activity in concentrated electrolyte solutions as a function of electrolyte concentration. This modified form, referred to here as the Stokes-Robinson BET model, is based on the electrolyte molality rather than on the mass of solute sorbed. The present study evaluates the Stokes-Robinson form of the BET equation to model water-sorption data on two smectites with different layer charges. One smectite was saturated with Na+ and another with Na+, Ca2+, or Mg2+. These results are compared to the Stokes-Robinson BET results of aqueous electrolyte solutions. Given published data on cation exchange capacities and water-vapor sorption isotherms for various clays, the molality of the aqueous phase in contact with the clay surface is calculated and related to water activity. The Stokes-Robinson BET model was found to describe accurately the water activity as a function of cation molality below water activities of 0.5 for the smectites. Good relative agreement was obtained between the number of water binding sites predicted by the model and the experimental data reported in the literature for other smectites. Water molecules were found to have a significantly greater affinity for montmorillonite than electrolyte solutions with the same cation molality as the montmorillonite interlayer. This modified BET approach simplifies water-activity modeling in highly saline environments because the same equation can be used for both the liquid- and mineral-surface phases.

The BET equation, the inflection points of N 2 adsorption isotherms and the estimation of specific surface area of porous solids

The N 2-adsorption isotherms of porous solids are received in the form V = f( P/ P o). If such data are depicted in the form V(1 − P/ P o) = f( P/ P o) or V(1 − P/ P o)/( P/ P o) = f( V(1 − P/ P o)), they show an identical inversion point (I-point, Inversion or Inflection point), which corresponds exactly to the monolayer volume V m . As a result the value of specific surface area S is determined with unique precision via the trivial relationship S (m 2 g −1) = 4.356 V m (cm 3 g −1) without any use of the classic BET treatment. The derivates dV/ d[( P/ P o)] vs. ( P/ P o) and d( V[1 − ( P/ P o)])/ d[( P/ P o)] vs. ( P/ P o) exhibit maxima exactly at the same pressure ( P/ P o), while the second order derivative d 2 V/ d[( P/ P o)] 2 vs. ( P/ P o) exhibits a minimum exactly at the same pressure ( P/ P o) with the I-point. As a consequence the specific surface area of solids can be determined just from experimental raw ( P/ P o), V data without any use, neither of linear BET treatment nor the Inversion or Inflection type graphs. For some MCM-41 type mesoporous materials, the I-plots show not one but two Inversion points/I-points. The first inversion/inflection point at lower ( P/ P o) values, “ I LP-point ”, corresponds to the completion of the adsorption procedure on the bare surface and the formation of monolayer and is useful for the determination of specific surface area S. The second inversion/inflection point at higher ( P/ P o) values, “ I HP-point ”, corresponds to the completion of the pore filling via condensation and may be useful for the determination of mesopore volume.

Interfacial Partitioning Tracer Test Measurements of Organic-Liquid/Water Interfacial Areas: Application to Soils and the Influence of Surface Roughness

Interfacial areas between an organic immiscible liquid and water were measured for two natural soils using the aqueous-phase interfacial partitioning tracer test method. The measured values were compared to measured values for silica sands compiled from the literature. The data were compared using the maximum specific interfacial area as a system index, which is useful for cases wherein fluid saturations differ. The maximum specific interfacial areas measured for the soils were significantly larger than the values obtained for the sands. The disparity between the values was attributed to the impact of surface roughness on solid surface area and hence film-associated interfacial area. A good correlation was observed between maximum specific interfacial area and specific solid surface area measured with the N(2)/BET method. The correlation may serve as a means by which to estimate maximum specific organic-liquid/water interfacial areas. Interfacial areas measured with the interfacial partitioning tracer method were compared to interfacial areas measured with high-resolution microtomography. Values measured with the former method were consistently larger than those measured with the latter, consistent with the general inability of the microtomography method to characterize roughness-associated surface area.

Comparison of interfacial partitioning tracer test and high‐resolution microtomography measurements of fluid‐fluid interfacial areas for an ideal porous medium

Fluid-fluid interfacial area for porous-media systems can be measured with the aqueous-phase interfacial partitioning tracer test (IPTT) method or with high-resolution microtomography. The results of prior studies have shown that interfacial areas measured with the IPTT method are larger than values measured with microtomography. The observed disparity has been hypothesized to result from the impact of porous-medium surface roughness on film-associated interfacial area, wherein the influence of surface roughness is characterized to some extent by the IPTT method but not by microtomography due to resolution constraints. This hypothesis was tested by using the two methods to measure interfacial area between an organic immiscible liquid and water for an ideal glass-beads medium that has no measurable surface roughness. The tracer tests yielded a mean interfacial area of 2.8 (± 5 cm-1), while microtomography produced an interfacial area of 2.7 (± 2 cm-1). Maximum specific interfacial areas, equivalent to areas normalized by non-wetting fluid volume, were calculated and compared to measures of the specific solid surface area. The normalized interfacial areas were similar to the specific solid surface area calculated using the smooth-sphere assumption, and to the specific solid surface area measured using the N2/BET method. The results presented herein indicate that both the IPTT and microtomography methods provide robust characterization of fluid-fluid interfacial area, and that they are comparable absent the impact of surface roughness.

Sol–gel-processed silica/polydimethylsiloxane/calcium xerogels as polymeric matrices for Metronidazole delivery system

Silica, silica/polydimethylsiloxane and silica/polydimethylsiloxane/calcium xerogels were examined as polymeric carriers for the controlled release of drug—Metronidazole. Characterization assays comprised analysis of the matrix by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), determining the specific surface area of solids (BET) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques and further monitoring in the ultraviolet and visible light regions (UV–Vis) of the in vitro release of the drug over time. Using tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) as a precursor of silica matrix and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and calcium ions as additives, xerogels with different morphology and physical properties were obtained. The applied modifications diminished the porosity and hydrophilicity of the silica matrix as well as reduced the release of drug. Based on the presented results of this study, it may be stated that applied xerogel matrices, pure silica (SiO2) and modified silica (SiO2–CaO, SiO2–PDMS and SiO2–CaO–PDMS), could be promising candidates for the formulation in local delivery systems.

Effect of CeO 2-doping on surface and catalytic properties of CuO–ZnO system

The effect of doping CuO–ZnO system with CeO 2 on its surface and catalytic properties was investigated using nitrogen adsorption at −196 °C, EDX technique and catalysis of CO oxidation by O 2 at 100–200 °C. Pure mixed solids were prepared by thermal decomposition of copper/zinc mixed hydroxides at 400 °C. The doped solids were obtained by impregnating a known mass of mixed hydroxides with calculated amount of cerium ammonium nitrate followed by drying then calcination at 400 °C. The dopant concentration was 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mol% CeO 2. The results revealed that CeO 2-doping modified the surface atomic Cu/Zn ratio of the system investigated and changed the crystallite size of both CuO and ZnO phases. The increase of the amount of dopant added changed the major phase present. This treatment decreased the specific surface area of doped solids. The doping process modified also the catalytic activity in a manner dependent on both mode of preparation and dopant concentration. However, CeO 2-doping did not modify the mechanism of the catalytic reaction but changed the concentration of catalytically active sites involved in the catalyzed reactions.

Intercalation of halloysite from Djebel Debagh (Algeria) and adsorption of copper ions

Halloysite available in Djebel Debagh, Guelma (eastern region of Algeria) was characterised by XRF, SEM, XRD, FTIR and by CEC, specific surface area and electrokinetic measurements. The crude halloysite was modified with M n+(CH 3COO) n (M = Na +, NH 4 + or Pb 2+), and intercalation of NaCH 3COO was monitored with time. XRD showed that the intercalation rate exceeded 90% for NaCH 3COO at long reaction time. X-ray diffraction also showed an expansion of the interlamellar space of 5.5 and 6.3 Å due to the intercalation of Pb(CH 3COO) 2 and NH 4CH 3COO. FTIR proved that M n+(CH 3COO) n reacted with the inner surface hydroxyl groups of halloysite, on the basis of disappearance of the frequence bands at 3676 and 3652 cm − 1 and the appearance of new bands around 3699 and 3457 cm − 1 . Intercalation of Pb(CH 3COO) 2 and NH 4CH 3COO shifted the band at 1650 towards 1663 and 1671 cm − 1 , respectively. The untreated and intercalated halloysite samples were used for removing copper(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption isotherms were of L-type according to the classification of Giles et al. (Giles, C.H., Mac Ewan, T.H., Makhwa, S.N., Smith, D., 1960. Studies in adsorption. Part XI. A system of classification of solution adsorption isotherms and its use in diagnosis of adsorption mechanisms and in measurement of specific surface areas of solids. J. The adsorption of copper ions was explained by electrostatic interaction between the copper(II) ions and negatively charged binding sites on halloysite surface and ion-exchange of the cations associated with acetate within the interlayer space.

The role of uranium peroxide studtite on the retention of Cs, Sr and Se(VI)

AbstractThe formation of uranyl secondary solid phases onto the spent nuclear fuel surface might influence the radionuclide concentration in solution via, among others, sorption processes. In this work, the incorporation of some radionuclides onto the uranium peroxide studtite, UO2O2·4H2O, has been tested.The study was carried out in batch experiments where a known amount of studtite (0.05 g) was put in contact with 20 cm3 of radionuclide solution. Once equilibrium was reached, radionuclide concentrations in solution were determined by ICP-MS. The radionuclide amount attached to the solid was calculated from the mass balance. The S/V values of the experiments were also determined from BET specific solid surface area measurements.In this work, data on sorption of caesium, strontium, and selenium as a function of pH are presented. The behaviour of caesium and strontium are similar: a relatively high amount of radionuclide is sorbed at neutral to alkaline pH while there is almost no sorption at acidic pH. On the other hand, in the case of selenium, the sorption maximum occurs at acidic pH and there is almost no sorption at alkaline pH. The different behavior of the radionuclides is related to the element speciation in solution and the surface charge of the solid. Strontium and caesium are sorbed at alkaline pH because they are positively charged in solution and the surface of the studtite is negatively charged (>O- groups) while selenium(VI) sorbs at acidic pH because the surface of the studtite is positively charged, and the predominant selenium(VI) species in solution is anionic.These preliminary data indicate that the sorption capacity of uranyl secondary solid phases such as studtite is an important process to be considered when establishing the migration of different radionuclides released from spent nuclear fuel.

Coalescence of oil microdrops in the flow of emulsions past solid surfaces

Oil-in-water emulsions at concentrations of 0.001‐ 1 vol % are very important objects because they are involved in fine water treatment to remove oil microdrops and in the formation of cruds, which cause a nuclear hazard in radiochemical extraction processes. In this work, a method was proposed for studying the coalescence of microdrops of organic liquids on the surface of solids and cloths. It was shown that the determining step is a second-order process occurring on the collision of microdrops coming from the bulk with drops of surface clusters. Once the microdrop size has become smaller than a certain value, the process rate constant significantly decreases. It was found that the decisive role in the microdrop coalescence is played by the pH of the oil-in-water emulsion and the specific surface area of solids. The proposed mechanism accelerates the separation of oil drops from water by a factor of hundreds or thousands.

Comparison of two techniques for the surface analysis of alumina (Al 2O 3): Inverse Gas Chromatography at Finite Concentration (IGC-FC) and Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS)

Inverse Gas Chromatography and Dynamic Vapor Sorption are two methods of solid surface characterization isotherms. The exploitation of the adsorption and desorption isotherms leads to the calculation of specific surface area and surface energy of the divided solids under test. The powders used are γ and α alumina. The aim of this study is to compare the results obtained by these both techniques.

Measuring Air−Water Interfacial Areas with X-ray Microtomography and Interfacial Partitioning Tracer Tests

Air-water interfacial areas as a function of water saturation were measured for a sandy, natural porous medium using two methods, aqueous-phase interfacial partitioning tracer tests and synchrotron X-ray microtomography. In addition, interfacial areas measured in a prior study with the gas-phase interfacial partitioning tracer-test method for the same porous medium were included for comparison. For all three methods, total air-water interfacial areas increased with decreasing water saturation. The interfacial areas measured with the tracer-test methods were generally larger than those obtained from microtomography, and the disparity increased as water saturation decreased. The interfacial areas measured by microtomography extrapolated to a value (147 cm(-1)) very similar to the specific solid surface area (151 cm(-1)) calculated using the smooth-sphere assumption, indicating that the method does not characterize the area associated with microscopic surface heterogeneity (surface roughness, microporosity). This is consistent with the method resolution of approximately 12 microm. In contrast, the interfacial areas measured with the gas-phase tracer tests approached the N2/BET measured specific solid surface area (56000 cm(-1)), indicating that this method does characterize the interfacial area associated with microscopic surface heterogeneity. The largest interfacial area measured with the aqueous-phase tracer tests was 224 cm(-1), while the extrapolated maximum interfacial area was approximately 1100 cm(-1). Both of these values are larger than the smooth-sphere specific solid surface area but much smaller than the N2/BET specific solid surface area, which suggests that the method measures a limited portion of the interfacial area associated with microscopic surface heterogeneity. All three methods provide measures of total (capillary + film) interfacial area, a primary difference being that the film-associated area is a smooth-surface equivalent for the microtomography method. An advantage of the microtomography method is the ability to determine explicitly both total and capillary-associated interfacial areas, which is problematic for the tracer-test methods.
