Three new species of Atalophlebiinae (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) of India, with a new record of the genus Megaglena Peters and Edmunds, 1970.

Three new species of Leptophlebiidae viz., Choroterpes (Choroterpes) andamanensis Vasanth, Subramanian Selvakumar n. sp., Edmundsula meghamalaiensis Vasanth, Subramanian Selvakumar n. sp. and Megaglena agasthiya Vasanth, Subramanian Selvakumar n. sp. are described based on our recent exploration of mayflies from the streams of Andaman Island, Tamil Nadu and Kerala part of the southern Western Ghats. The genus Megaglena Peters Edmunds, 1970 has extended the distribution in southern peninsular India as represented by the occurrence of M. agasthiya n. sp. Larval key is provided to the known and new species of subgenus Choroterpes of India along with the distribution map of new species.

Leptophlebiidae Banks, 1900 (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) from Maranhão state, Brazil

A checklist and new records of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) are presented for the Maranhão state, in Brazil’s Northeast Region. Fifteen 15 genera and 20 species of Leptophlebiidae were identified. Farrodes xingu, Hermanellopsis arsia, Hydromastodon sallesi, Miroculis duckensis, Thraulodes marreroi, and Tikuna bilineata are reported for the first time for the Northeast Region, and Miroculitus emersoni is recorded for the first time in Brazil. The number of known species of Leptophlebiidae in Maranhão is increased from three to 21.

Leptophlebiidae (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) from state of Bahia, Brazil

Abstract Leptophlebiidae is the family with the most diversity of species and wide distribution in the Southern Hemisphere. There are 95 species of Leptophlebiidae recorded in Brazil, but for the state of Bahia there are only 21 species. A check list and new records of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) are presented to the State of Bahia. A total of 16 genera and 40 species of Leptophlebiidae were identified on this study. The species Fittkaulus cururuensis, Hylister obliquus, Miroculis (atroari) duckensis and Miroculis (Ommaethus) froehlichi are reported for the first time to the State of Bahia, increasing the number of Leptophlebiidae species from 21 to 25. Now, the Bahia is one of the states with the largest number of Leptophlebiidae species records, behind only of the state of Espírito Santo which has 26 species of this family.

Mayflies of the genus Nonnullidens Grant & Peters 1993 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) from New Guinea.

In light of the discovery of four new species of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) from the Indonesian part ofNew Guinea, the generic name Barba Grant & Peters 1993 syn.n. is regarded here to be a junior synonym of Nonnullidens Grant & Peters 1993. Nonnullidens variegatus sp. n., N. niger sp. n. and N. reductus sp. n. are described from larvae, subimagoes and imagoes, with the stages associated by rearing. Nonnullidens depapricus sp. n. is described from an immature male larva of the last instar. Nonnullidens mariae comb.n. formerly known only from eastern New Guinea, is reported from the Baliem Valley.

A new genus and species of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) from northern New Zealand

A new species of Leptophlebiidae is described from the far north of New Zealand and a new genus Aupouriella is erected to contain it. The new genus is unique among New Zealand Ephemeroptera in that eyes of adult males are not divided into upper and lower portions. The penes terminate in a prominent ventrally–projecting spine partially enclosing the sperm groove, and the posterior margin of the styliger plate has a prominent, upwardly curved projection, medially. Nymphs, subimagos and adults of Aupouriella pohei n. sp. have very slender legs, and are easily recognised by their bold abdominal markings. Nymphs were found on stony substrata in a small coastal stream at the type locality near North Cape along with nymphs of at least five other leptophlebiid species.

New records and combinations for Neotropical Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera)

Several species of Leptophlebiidae (Atalophlebiinae) from South and Central America are given new generic combinations based on improved knowledge of the Leptophlebiidae of the region. These are: Tikuna bilineata (Needham & Murphy, 1924, Choroterpes) comb. n.; Terpides vinculum (Traver, 1947, Choroterpes) comb. n.; Hermanella costalis (Navás, 1934, Thraulus) comb. n.; Ulmeritoides haarupi (Esben-Petersen, 1912, Thraulus) comb. n. (synonyms Deleatidium vittatum, Thew, 1960 syn. n. and Ulmeritoides fidalgoi Domínguez, 1995 syn. n.). In addition, we give new distribution records for Tikuna bilineata, report Choroterpes from Colombia, and describe Hagenulus marshalli sp. n. from Ecuador based on two male imagos. Hagenulus marshalli sp. n can be distinguished from other members of the genus by the asymmetrical fork of MP (small cross vein present) and the short, slightly twisted penes without apical spines. These are the first confirmed records for Choroterpes, Tikuna and Hagenulus from continental South America, extending Hagenulus from the Greater Antilles into Ecuador, Choroterpes from Central America into Colombia, and Tikuna from Costa Rica into Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Surinam and Venezuela.

New species of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) from Mexico and Central America

Eleven new species in the mayfly family Leptophlebiidae are described from larvae from Mexico and Central America. Choroterpes ungulus, n. sp., Thraulodes eccentricus [=Allen and Brusca's Thraulodes sp. B], n. sp., and Thraulodes tenulineus [=Allen and Brusca's Thraulodes sp. D], n. sp., are described from Mexico; Farrodes otiesa, n. sp., Hagenulopsis ingens, n. sp., Hagenulopsis ramosa, n. sp., Terpides diadema, n. sp., Traverella holzenthali, n. sp., and Traverella longifrons [=Allen's Traverella sp. B], n. sp., are described from Costa Rica; Traverella promifrons [=Allen's Traverella sp, C], n. sp., is described from Belize and Costa Rica; and Thraulodes grandis, n. sp., is described from Guatemala.

Comparative study of the mating apparatus of three species of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera)

Ultrastructural studies carried out on the coupling system of the leptophlebiids, Habroleptoides confusa, Habrophlebia eldae and Choroterpes picteti identified the fine morphology of the external genital apparatus. In H. confusa and H. eldae penes consisted of two lobes, each presenting a ventral appendage folded onto itself to form a sperm groove. The structure of the appendages and their merging with the penis lobes differed with the species. By contrast, in Ch. picteti appendages were not present and the sperm duct was completely incorporated inside the penes. No peculiar differentiation was observed for the female genitalia of Ch. picteti. By contrast, there were found a subgenital plate in H. confusa and a tubular ovipositor in H. eldae. The morphology of the male and female coupling systems are discussed in view of both paleomorphological traits and aflagellate sperms.

Life histories of some Benthic invetebrates form streams of the Northern Jarrah Forest, Western Australia

Life history patterns of thirteen species of invertebrates from streams of the northern jarrah forest were examined over a 1-year period. Five species had univoltine cycles with a single cohort and demonstrated a high degree of synchrony of larval development and a restricted period of adult emergence. Two species of Leptophlebiidae also had univoltine cycles but showed the more typical pattern of Australian mayflies, with extended recruitment, multiple overlapping cohorts and a long period of adult emergence. Uroctena sp., a small gammarid, had a generation time of 1 year but showed considerable spatial variation in the degree of synchrony of development. This appeared to be a result of differences in the constancy of stream discharge and was not attributable to differences in the temperature regime of the streams. At least three species demonstrated cohort splitting which resulted in an apparently bivoltine cycle. A life-history pattern of alternating long and short development times is described which, on average, would produce two generations every 3 years. This is considered to be a highly adaptive strategy for Australian stream insects with slow life cycles and can explain the extended periods of recruitment and adult emergence so often observed. Streams of the northern jarrah forest are depauperate compared with other Australian streams, despite predictable temperature and discharge regimes. The insular nature of the south-west Bassian region and its long period of isolation may be the principle cause of this reduced diversity. The invertebrate community of these streams is simple in structure and has a high degree of seasonality that is atypical of the temperate streams of Australia and New Zealand.

New genera and species of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) from New Zealand

Abstract New genera Isothraulus, Arachnocolus, and Penniketellus are established for three species of leptophlebiid mayfly from New Zealand. Each genus is monotypic and endemic to New Zealand. Isothraulus and Arachnocolus are known only from the northern North Island, and Penniketellus is known only from the Arthur's Pass area of the central South Island. The male and female imago, nymph, and egg of Isothraulus abditus n.sp., the male imago, male subimago, and nymph of Arachnocolus phillipsi n.sp., and the male and female imago, female subimago, and egg of Penniketellus insolitus n.sp. are described. The relationships of each genus and the ecology of nymphs of each species are discussed.

Fittkaulus maculatus a new genus and species from northern Brazil (Leptophlebiidae: Ephemeroptera)

Abstract A new genus and species of Leptophlebiidae, Fittkaulus maculatus, is described from male and female imagos, subimagos, and nymphs collected from streams of the eastern Guiana Shield, Pará State, Brazil. Association of life cycle stages is by rearing. Fittkaulus appears to be most closely related to Terpides Demoulin.
