Fissidens Pokhrensis Nork. – A New Record to Kerala

The Fissidentaceae is one of the moss families with the genus Fissidens. A species of Fissidens viz., F. pokhrensis has been collected from the Neeliyarkottam sacred grove of Kannur District, which is a new record to the moss flora of Kerala. Sacred groves remain neglected in the study of bryoflora.

Decolorization of safranin using Fissidens species and its ecotoxicological assessments: An in vitro and in silico approach

Decolorization of safranin was investigated using Fissidens species in a batch system under optimized conditions. The decolorization efficiency was improved by optimizing the conditions such as initial pH (3–9), temperature (25–45 °C), initial dye concentration (10–50 mg/L), biosorbent dosage (100–500 mg/L) and contact time (1–6 days). Maximum decolorization (95%) was recorded at initial pH of 6 with dye concentration of 20 mg/L, biosorbent dosage of 200 mg/L at 30 °C and contact time of 2 days. Desorption studies revealed 0.1 N NaOH as the best desorbing agent with 92% recovery on third day. Experimental data well fitted to Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second order kinetic model. The negative values of ΔGo and positive value of ΔSo and ΔHo indicates that the reaction is spontaneous, favorable and endothermic. The biosorbent - dye interactions were confirmed using UV–Vis, FT-IR, XRD and FE-SEM with EDX studies. The detoxified nature of the dye degraded metabolites was confirmed by the significant growth of green gram. The color fastness and color strength of the fabrics dyed using Fissidens species treated dye solution were compared with the tap water dyed fabrics which indicated the reuse potential of treated water in textile sector. The decolorization efficiency was further confirmed through in silico approach, where safranin well docked with the active sites of Photosystem II protein D1 of the Fissidens species. Thus, the present study proves that Fissidens species is a promising biosorbent for safranin decolorization and will lay a platform for the control and management of environmental pollution.

A new record of Fissidens protonemaecola Sakurai (Fissidentaceae, Bryophyta) in Korea

An unrecorded Fissidens species, Fissidens protonemaecola Sakurai (Fissidentaceae, Bryophyta), was newly discovered in Korea during an investigation bryophyte flora. In this study, we examined the morphology of F. protonemaecola in Korea. This species was found in soil along a train through a shaded backslope of Mt. Bukbyeongsan (elev. 80 m) on Geojedo Island and on Mt. Gogeunsan (Oreum; elev. 280 m) on Jejudo Island, Korea. This species has dwarfish bud-like shoots scattered on persistent protonemata. An important feature of the protonemata is a diagnostic character of F. protonemaecola that clearly distinguishes it from other Fissidens species. Its Korean name is given as “Cho-rok-sil-bong-hwang-i-kki,” inferred from the characteristic protonemata of the species. Keywords: Bryophytes, unrecorded species, Fissidens, Fissidens protonemaecola

New Fissidens Species to Moss Flora of Saudi Arabia

FISSIDENS Hedw. is the unique genus in family Fissidentaceae Schimp. It is represented by only six taxa (out of ca. 440 species) in Saudi Arabia. In the present work three species, collected from Asir and Makkah regions, were recorded. One species (Fissidens crispulus Brid.) is a new record to Saudi Arabia, while the second (F. arnoldii R. Ruthe) is a new record to Makkah region and the third (F. crispus Mont.) was recorded previously from the study area. Key, comments, sites of collection, habitats, distributions and floristic elements of the three Fissidens species are given. The description, illustration and distribution map of the new recorded species in Saudi Arabia is also provided.

Fissidensof Delaware and Adjacent Areas

There are 13 species of Fissidens known or expected to occur in Delaware. A key to these species is given along with the following information for each species: short description; comments on ecology; distribution in Delaware; total range distribution; and citations to illustrations in selected North American floras. The two most credible theories for the origin of the odd Fissidens leaf—enation vs. axis reorientation—are noted. Evidence is given in support of the theory that this odd leaf morphology is due to the reorientation of the mitotic spindle of the leaf apical cells. A possible cause for this reorientation—the similarity between the two-sided stem apical cell and the two-sided leaf apical cells—may have resulted in the formation of a leaf lamina in the plane of the apical cell of the stem. As a result the entire stem can be envisioned as though it were a single leaf. Important morphological features of Fissidens are described and particular attention given to the variations exhibited by unequal vaginant laminae.

Two Species of Fissidens (Fissidentaceae): New to Indian Bryoflora

During the course of the present study, two species of Fissidens viz. F. formosanus Noguchi and F. oblongifolius Hook. f. & Wilson have been encountered from Pachmarhi biosphere reserve, which are new additions to the bryoflora of India. Considering that these species are restrictedly distributed worldwide, their occurrence in India holds much importance.

The present paper describes eight species of Fissidens from the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. Among these, Fissidens taxifolius Hedw. and F. palldinervis Mitt. are new records for Eastern Ghats. F. crispulus Brid. and F. ceylonensis Dozy and Molk. are new records for Andhra Pradesh.

Bryophytes are the second largest group of land plants and are also known as the amphibians of the plant kingdom. 67 species of bryophytes have been reported from select locations across the state of Gujrat. The status of family fissidentaceae which is a large moss family is being presented in this paper. Globally the family consists of 10 genera but only one genus, Fissidens Hedw. has been collected from Gujarat. Fissidens is characterized by a unique leaf structure and shows the presence of three distinct lamina, the dorsal, the ventral and the vaginant lamina. A total of 8 species of Fissidens have been reported from the state based on vegetative characters as no sporophyte stages were collected earlier. Species reported from the neighboring states also showed the absence of sporophytes. The identification of different species was difficult due to substantial overlap in vegetative characters. Hence a detailed study on the diversity of members of Fissidentaceae in Gujarat was carried out between November 2013 and February 2015. In present study 8 distinct species of Fissidens have been collected from different parts of the state. Three species Fissidens splachnobryoides Broth., Fissidens zollingerii Mont. and Fissidens curvato-involutus Dixon. have been identified while the other five are still to be identified. Fissidens zollingerii Mont. and Fissidens xiphoides M. Fleisch., which have been reported as distinct species are actually synonyms according to TROPICOS database. The presence of sexual reproductive structures and sporophytes for several Fissidens species are also being reported for the first time from the state.

The genus Fissidens in the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, Gulf of Guinea, West Africa

Fissidens, with 24 species, is the largest moss genus in the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. We report 21 species new for the Republic of which two are the first records for Africa. A key to Fissidens in the Republic is provided along with cited specimens examined, information on habitat, important diagnostic characters for recognition and distribution. The potential to discover additional species of Fissidens in the Republic is likely with continued exploration and specimen acquisition.

Bryophytes of St Helena, South Atlantic Ocean. 5. Fissidens Lindb. (Fissidentaceae), including a description of F. translucens sp. nov. and Fissidens curvatus Hornsch. subsp. sanctae-helenae subsp. nov.

Descriptions, illustrations and short diagnoses of the species of Fissidens reported from St Helena, South Atlantic Ocean, are presented. One new species, Fissidens translucens (subgenus Aloma) and one new subspecies, Fissidens curvatus Hornsch. subsp. sanctae-helenae are described. F. darntyi Schimp. ex Besch., F. elegans Brid., F. porrectus Mitt., F. pygmaeus Hornsch., F. serratus Müll.Hal., F. taxifolius Hedw., F. taylorii Müll.Hal., and F. tenellus Hook.f. & Wilson are reported from St Helena for the first time. A key to the species, notes on habitats and distribution, and references to other descriptions and illustrations are provided. A neotype is proposed for F. chioneurus Müll.Hal. The name F. helenicus is replaced by the older name F. chioneurus.

A new species of Fissidens with remarkable rhizoidal tubers and gemmae from Macao, China

Fissidens macaoensis L. Zhang is described as a new species from Macao, South China. The species can be separated from its congeners by a suite of characters, including (1) minute size; (2) subterraneous tubers, composed of one to several cells, growing laterally from mature rhizoids; (3) abundant rhizoidal gemmae found on the surface of the soil and which are developed from subterraneous rhizoids; and (4) relatively large cells of the leaf lamina. This is the first report of a moss where two types of vegetative diaspores occur simultaneously in a single individual. Their adaptation strategy is briefly addressed.

Chorological data and threat status evaluation of Fissidens species (Fissidentaceae, Bryophyta) on Madeira Archipelago

Madeira Archipelago's bryoflora includes 23 Fissidens taxa of which four are endemic to Macaronesia (Fissidens coacervatus, F. microstictus, F. nobreganus and F. sublineaefolius), including two exclusive to Madeira (F. microstictus, F. nobreganus), and several others that are considered rare or threatened in Europe. However, the distribution and threat status of several Fissidens species on Madeira Archipelago is yet insufficiently known. Based on recent field work and revision of herbarium collections, distribution data, habitat preferences, and threat status on Madeira Archipelago are updated for the Madeiran endemic F. nobreganus, the Macaronesian endemics F. coacervatus an d F. sublineaefolius, as well as five other rare or insufficiently known species, F. curvatus, F. crispus, F. dubius, F. ovatifolius and F. polyphyllus.

<strong><em>Fissidens</em> of Easter Island</strong>

The four species of Fissidens, F. leptocladus, F. linearis var. obscurirete, F. pellucidus var. pellucidus and F. serratus var. serratus, found on Easter Island, are described using local specimens. Fissidens pascuanus is reduced to the synonymy of F. linearis var. obscurirete.
