Cheilolejeunea pluriplicata (Pearson) R. M. Schust. is a common species thought to be endemic to Africa. It is similar to Asian Cheilolejeunea khasiana (Mitt.) N. Kitag., however, it differs in having fusiform perianths with (6-)7-10 keels. Recent studies reveal the occurrence of C. pluriplicata in China (southern Yunnan) and Nepal. The structure of the sporophyte, elaters, and spores of C. pluriplicata agrees well with that in other species of Cheilolejeunea. A complete description and illustrations of C. pluriplicata are provided. Cheilolejeunea is a large and diverse genus of approximately 80 species (Thiers 1997) most of which are distributed in the subtropical and tropical regions, with only a few species extending to temperate regions. The genus comprises 16 species in China (So & Zhu 1996), 23 in Africa (Grolle 1995; Wigginton & Grolle 1996), 17 including varieties in Australia (Thiers 1997), 12 in Japan (Mizutani 1982), 9 in India (Asthana et al. 1995), 13 in western Melanesia (Grolle & Piippo 1984), and 21 in Borneo (Menzel 1988). Recently, several taxa have been transferred to Cheilolejeunea (Gradstein et al. 1993; Grolle & Reiner-Drehwald 1997; He 1995, 1996a,b, 1997a,b; Thiers & Gradstein 1989). During our studies of the Lejeuneaceae of Yunnan, we were surprised to find Cheilolejeunea pluriplicata (Pearson) R. M. Schust., which is a common African species previously known only from central and southern Africa. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Chinese materials of Cheilolejeunea pluriplicata were collected by Xing-Jiang Li and Shu-Ying Zeng in 1974 and 1980, respectively. Additional materials of C. pluriplicata were borrowed from JE. Specimens of other related species were collected by the first author, or borrowed from BM, FH, HSNU, IFP, KUN, and NICH. Materials for scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies were dehydrated in a desiccator, mounted on metal stubs, and then coated with gold. SEM micrographs were made with a JEOL 1200 EX scanning electron microscope. Representative specimens of Cheilolejeunea pluriplicata that were examined are as follows. CHINA. YUNNAN. Xishuangbanna, Menghai, Li 3361 (HSNU, IFP, KUN); Cangyuan, Zeng 80-1211 (HSNU, IFP, KUN). MADAGASCAR. TAMATAVE.
