Empirical Model of SSUSI‐Derived Auroral Ionization Rates

AbstractWe present an empirical model for auroral (90–150 km) electron–ion pair production rates, ionization rates for short, derived from Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager electron energy and flux data. Using the Fang et al. (2010, https://doi.org/10.1029/2010gl045406) parametrization for mono‐energetic electrons, and the NRLMSISE‐00 neutral atmosphere model (Picone et al., 2002, https://doi.org/10.1029/2002ja009430), the calculated ionization rate profiles are binned in 2‐hr magnetic local time and 3.6°geomagnetic latitude to yield time series of ionization rates at 5‐km altitude steps. We fit each of these time series to the geomagnetic indices Kp, PC, and Ap, the 81‐day averaged solar radio flux index, and a constant term. The resulting empirical model can easily be incorporated into coupled chemistry–climate models to include particle precipitation effects.

Longitude Structure of Wavenumber 4 of the Ionosphere After Midnight Based on the OI135.6 nm Night Airglow Using FY‐3D Ionospheric Photometer

AbstractIn this study, based on the OI135.6 nm night airglow data of the FY‐3D Ionospheric Photometer (IPM) during the 2018–2021 geomagnetically quiet period, the global wavenumber 4 longitudinal structure of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) at 2:00 local time was discovered, and the component of the wavenumber 4 was extracted from these structures. Compared with the OI135.6 nm night airglow data of the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) F18 during 2011–2014, there were significant differences in the variation pattern of the relative amplitude of the two versus solar activity and the seasonal variation in the proportion of the component of the wavenumber 4. Based on the neutral wind speed observation results of the Michelson Interferometer for Global High‐Resolution Thermospheric Imaging on board the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) from 2020 to 2021, the longitudinal structures of the 4 ionospheric waves after midnight are related to the cross‐equatorial meridional wind. We believe that the wavenumber 4 longitudinal structures after midnight originate from the semidiurnal eastward‐propagating with zonal wavenumber 2 (SE2) nonmigrating tide in the cross‐equatorial neutral wind rather than the diurnal eastward‐propagating with zonal wavenumber 3 (DE3) nonmigrating tide in from the zonal wind, which modulates the daytime wavenumber 4 longitudinal structures.

Doppler Shifted Auroral Hydrogen Lyman‐Alpha Spectra Observed by DMSP/SSUSI

AbstractProton auroras, when viewed from space, are subjected to Doppler red shifts. Reports on space‐based observations of Doppler shift of H Lyman‐alpha (Ly‐α) spectral line associated with proton precipitation are still scarce. This study, as a first attempt, extracts Doppler shifted H Ly‐α spectral profiles resulting from proton precipitation from data acquired with the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) on board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/F16 spacecraft. SSUSI consists of a scanning imaging spectrograph, which covers the far ultraviolet spectrum from ∼1,120 to 1,850 Å, with 160 spectral bins and a spectral resolution of ∼20 Å. We show redshift Ly‐α spectra observed by SSUSI when its field of view traverses the auroral ovals. The inferred proton energy and energy flux are in close agreement with the DMSP SSJ in situ particle measurements. This study demonstrates the potential capability of SSUSI in monitoring the energetics of proton precipitation.

On the formation of postnoon auroral bright spots during weak substorm activity

Postnoon auroral bright spots occurring around 15:00 magnetic local time (MLT) are typically caused by monoenergetic electrons accelerated by quasi-static electric field. In this study, we conduct an analysis of two special auroral spots observed by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft. The first bright spot, observed on 05 June 2010, appears as a south-north aligned arc, while the second case, observed on 19 August 2005, takes the form of a circular patch. They both occurred at the equatorward edge of and are connected to the discrete aurora in the auroral oval. Particle measurements indicate that these two postnoon spots are primarily produced by precipitating electrons experiencing an acceleration process by quasi-static electric field. The average energy and integrated energy flux for the two cases are approximately 1.4 keV (1.5 keV) and 2.3 × 1012 (1.1 × 1012) eV/(cm2 s sr). It is suggested that the precipitating particles associated with the two cases originate from the boundary plasma sheet located poleward of the central plasma sheet. During the occurrences, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By was nearly zero, while the IMF Bz was slightly negative, with values above −3 nT. Additionally, the geomagnetic AL index decreased to −160 and −200 nT, respectively. This indicates a potential relationship between the postnoon auroral spots and week substorm activities. Surprisingly, significant ion flow velocity was found to be nearly orientated with the postnoon spots. This suggests that the convection transports plenty of plasma along the south-north direction, offering sufficient particles for the formation of the postnoon auroral bright spots.

The Association of Cusp‐Aligned Arcs With Plasma in the Magnetotail Implies a Closed Magnetosphere

AbstractWe investigate a 15‐day period in October 2011. Auroral observations by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager instrument onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F16, F17, and F18 spacecraft indicate that the polar regions were covered by weak cusp‐aligned arc (CAA) emissions whenever the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) clock angle was small, |θ| < 45°, which amounted to 30% of the time. Simultaneous observations of ions and electrons in the tail by the Cluster C4 and Geotail spacecraft showed that during these intervals dense (≈1 cm−3) plasma was observed, even as far from the equatorial plane of the tail as |ZGSE| ≈ 13 RE. The ions had a pitch angle distribution peaking parallel and antiparallel to the magnetic field and the electrons had pitch angles that peaked perpendicular to the field. We interpret the counter‐streaming ions and double loss‐cone electrons as evidence that the plasma was trapped on closed field lines, and acted as a source for the CAA emission across the polar regions. This suggests that the magnetosphere was almost entirely closed during these periods. We further argue that the closure occurred as a consequence of dual‐lobe reconnection. Our finding forces a significant re‐evaluation of the magnetic topology of the magnetosphere during periods of northwards IMF.

Formation and Motion of Horse Collar Aurora Events

AbstractThe polar cap can become teardrop shaped through the poleward expansion of the dusk and dawn sectors of the auroral oval, to form what is called horse collar aurora (HCA). The formation of HCA has been linked to dual‐lobe reconnection (DLR) where magnetic flux is closed at the dayside magnetopause. A prolonged period of northward IMF is required for the formation of HCA. HCA have previously been identified in UV images captured by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) instrument on‐board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft F16, F17 and F18. Events that have concurrent 630.0 nm all‐sky camera (ASC) data from the Redline Geospace Observatory (REGO) Resolute Bay site are now studied in more detail, making use of the higher cadence of the ASC images compared to DMSP/SSUSI. 11 HCA events are studied and classified based on the IMF conditions at the end of the event. Five of the events were found to end via a southward turning of the IMF, two end with positive By dominated IMF and four with negative By dominance. Under positive (negative) By the arcs move duskward (dawnward) in the northern hemisphere with the opposite true in the southern hemisphere. Under a southward turning the arcs move equatorward. One event is of particular interest as it occurred while there was a transpolar arc (TPA) also present. Understanding the evolution of HCA will allow DLR to be studied in more detail.

Detecting the Auroral Oval through CSES-01 Electric Field Measurements in the Ionosphere

We present the results of a systematic study of the ionospheric electric field in the Auroral Oval (AO) region in the southern hemisphere. We exploit one year of electric field measurements taken by the Electric Field Detector (EFD) on board the Chinese Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite-01 (CSES-01), flying at around 500 km altitude in a sun-synchronous orbit. We exploit the high temporal resolution of the EFD to devise a new technique for the detection of CSES-01 crossing of the AO using electric field measurements only. This new technique combines a Median-Weighted Local Variance Measure with Fast Iterative Filtering to automatically isolate high levels of electromagnetic activity caused by, e.g., particle precipitation and Field Aligned Currents (FACs) at auroral latitudes. We validate this new method against other standard proxies, such as the single-FAC product from the Swarm mission and the auroral radiance emission measured by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) units on board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) constellation. Furthermore, we identify ∼3000 orbits (out of a dataset of ∼10,000) where CSES-01 crosses the AO boundary under conditions of high geomagnetic activity. This dataset represents the first step in the systematic study of the auroral electric field, with many potential applications to space weather, thanks to the large amount of continuous observations of the ionosphere by CSES-01 and the forthcoming CSES-02 mission.

Thermospheric Conditions Associated With the Loss of 40 Starlink Satellites

AbstractWe analyzed far ultraviolet data from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) and Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED)/Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) and found significant changes in the thermospheric density and composition during the 3–5 February 2022 storm when 40 Starlink satellites started to re‐enter the atmosphere associated with increased neutral drag at an altitude around 210 km. The standard NRLMSISE‐00 model predicts only ∼5% increase in neutral density at 210 km. TIMED/GUVI observations showed a clear increase in the thermospheric N2/O column density ratio and an increase in the nitric oxide (NO) column density, indicating high thermospheric density, and temperature. DMSP SSUSI 130.4 nm limb data showed a clear increase in neutral density in the low latitude region (−30°–30°). On the duskside (17:32 LT), the density increase (compared to the pre‐storm density) is around 11%–18% at 210 km and around 18%–26% at 520 km. On the dawn‐side (05:19 LT), the density increase is more significant, 40%–59% at 210 km and ∼300% at 520 km. There are a few reasons for the dawn‐dusk asymmetry in the relative density increase: (a) the pre‐storm background density or heat capacity is lower on the dawn‐side than that on the duskside, (b) stronger auroral heating was observed on the dawnside based on analysis of auroral images, (c) the thermosphere density enhancement partially recovered when the disturbance co‐rotated with the Earth from dawn to dusk side due to enhanced infrared cooling by NO. Note that the neutral density increase is expected to be much higher at high latitudes where the neutral disturbances are initiated.

Occurrence Statistics of Horse Collar Aurora

AbstractHorse collar aurora (HCA) are an auroral feature where the dawn and dusk sector auroral oval moves polewards and the polar cap becomes teardrop shaped. They form during prolonged periods of northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), when the IMF clock angle is small. Their formation has been linked to dual‐lobe reconnection (DLR) closing magnetic flux at the dayside magnetopause. The conditions necessary for DLR are currently not well‐understood therefore understanding HCA statistics will allow DLR to be studied in more detail. We have identified over 600 HCA events between 2010 and 2016 in UV images captured by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager instrument on‐board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft F16, F17 and F18. As expected, there is a clear preference for HCA occurring during northward IMF. We find no clear seasonal dependence in their occurrence, with an average of 8 HCA events per month. The occurrence of HCA events does not appear to depend on the Bx component of the IMF. Considering the average radiance intensity across the dusk‐dawn meridian shows the HCA as a separate bulge inside the auroral oval and that the dawn side arc of the HCA is usually brighter than the dusk in the Lyman‐Birge‐Hopfield short band. We relate this to the expected field aligned current pattern of HCA formation. We further suggest that transpolar arcs observed in the dawn sector simultaneously in both northern and southern hemispheres are misidentified HCA.

Assimilative Mapping of Auroral Electron Energy Flux Using SSUSI Lyman‐Birge‐Hopfield (LBH) Emissions

AbstractFar ultraviolet (FUV) imaging of the aurora from space provides great insight into the dynamic coupling of the atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere on global scales. To gain a quantitative understanding of these coupling processes, the global distribution of auroral energy flux is required, but the inversion of FUV emission to derive precipitating auroral particles' energy flux is not straightforward. Furthermore, the spatial coverage of FUV imaging from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) altitudes is often insufficient to achieve global mapping of this important parameter. This study seeks to fill these gaps left by the current geospace observing system using a combination of data assimilation and machine learning techniques. Specifically, this paper presents a new data‐driven modeling approach to create instantaneous, global assimilative mappings of auroral electron total energy flux from Lyman‐Birge‐Hopfield (LBH) emission data from the Defense Meteorological System Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI). We take a two‐step approach; the creation of assimilative maps of LBH emission using optimal interpolation, followed by the conversion to energy flux using a neural network model trained with conjunction observations of in‐situ auroral particles and LBH emission from the DMSP Special Sensor J and SSUSI instruments. The paper demonstrates the feasibility of this approach with a model prototype built with DMSP data from 17 February 2014 to 23 February 2014. This study serves as a blueprint for a future comprehensive data‐driven model of auroral energy flux that is complementary to traditional inversion techniques to take advantage of FUV imaging from LEO platforms for global assimilative mapping of auroral energy flux.

Simultaneous Observations of a Sporadic E Layer by Digisonde and SuperDARN HF Radars at Zhongshan, Antarctica

AbstractSporadic E (Es) layers could be composed of metallic ions and formed, modified, or transported by the action of convective electric fields in the high latitude ionosphere. In this paper, by utilizing simultaneous observations from Digisonde and Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) HF radars at Zhongshan Station (ZHS, 69.4°S, 76.4°E), Antarctica, a thin Es layer, which initially formed in the lower F region and descended into the lower E region, with wavelike structures, was recorded by Digisonde on 14 November 2019. The Es layer‐related concurrent ionospheric irregularities were also detected by the SuperDARN ZHS HF radar. By using a global‐scale 2‐D convection map, combined with images from the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager instruments onboard Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft, it is proposed that the flow shears associated with the duskside convective circulation are responsible for the evolution of the Es layer. Moreover, using the HF radar elevation angle data to measure the scatter height, it is strongly suggested that the Es layer was elongated with convection circulation. The electrodynamic processes responsible for the formation and evolution of the Es layer are discussed.

Transpolar Arcs: Seasonal Dependence Identified by an Automated Detection Algorithm

AbstractTranspolar arcs (TPAs) are auroral features that occur polewards of the main auroral oval suggesting that the magnetosphere has acquired a complicated magnetic topology. They are primarily a northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) auroral phenomenon, and their formation and evolution have no single explanation that is unanimously agreed upon. An automated detection algorithm has been developed to detect the occurrence of TPAs in UV images captured from the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) instrument onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft, in order to further study their occurrence. Via this detection algorithm TPAs are identified as a peak in the average radiance intensity poleward of 12.5° colatitude, in two or more of the wavelengths/bands sensed by SSUSI. Using the detection algorithm for the years 2010 to 2016, over 5000 images containing TPAs are identified. The occurrence of these TPAs shows a seasonal dependence, with more arcs being visible in the winter hemisphere. The orbital plane of DMSP has been investigated as a possible explanation of the dependences in the results of the detection algorithm. For the spacecraft of interest this leads to a preferential observation of the northern hemisphere with the detection algorithm missing TPAs in the southern hemisphere around 01–06 UT. No seasonal bias has been found for these spacecraft. We discuss the ramifications of these findings in terms of proposed TPA generation mechanisms and suggest reasons for the seasonal dependence including it being a reflection of probability of seeing TPAs due to visibility.

Observational Properties of 15MLT‐PCA in the Southern Hemisphere and the Switching Effects of IMF By on 15MLT‐PCA Occurrence

AbstractBased on Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager on Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft (DMSP/SSUSI) observations in the Northern Hemisphere, a particular polar cap arc observed at ∼1,500 magnetic local time (MLT) sector was identified and was named 15MLT‐PCA. A 15MLT‐PCA model proposed for the Northern Hemisphere suggests that the 15MLT‐PCA is caused by a lobe reconnection related to the tilt angle and lobe field line twisting due to a long‐lasting positive interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By condition. However, it is unclear if the 15MLT‐PCA can be observed in the Southern Hemisphere and how the IMF By influences its occurrence and location. Using the long‐term DMSP/SSUSI observations in the Southern Hemisphere, we confirmed that the 15MLT‐PCA could be observed in the Southern Hemisphere in summer under long‐lasting negative IMF By and predominantly positive IMF Bx. The ion energy dispersion and some other statistical properties are also investigated. Further, we showed that the IMF By has a switching effect on the occurrence of the 15MLT‐PCA using multiple cases. We found that the 15MLT‐PCA disappear as soon as the IMF By changed to an unfavorable condition, but it seems that the favorable conditions need to be maintained for ∼1 hr for the occurrence of 15MLT‐PCA. We also found that the IMF By magnitude is well correlated to the MLT location of the 15MLT‐PCA. We suggest that all the results support the 15MLT‐PCA model and imply that a magnetotail lobe reconnection should be common in the summer hemisphere because the well‐known Parker Spiral favors meeting the model's IMF requirements.

Validation of SSUSI-derived auroral electron densities: comparisons to EISCAT data

Abstract. The coupling of the atmosphere to the space environment has become recognized as an important driver of atmospheric chemistry and dynamics. In order to quantify the effects of particle precipitation on the atmosphere, reliable global energy inputs on spatial scales commensurate with particle precipitation variations are required. To that end, we have validated auroral electron densities derived from the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) data products for average electron energy and electron energy flux by comparing them to EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association) electron density profiles. This comparison shows that SSUSI far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations can be used to provide ionization rate and electron density profiles throughout the auroral region. The SSUSI on board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Block 5D3 satellites provide nearly hourly, 3000 km wide high-resolution (10 km×10 km) UV snapshots of auroral emissions. These UV data have been converted to average energies and energy fluxes of precipitating electrons. Here we use those SSUSI-derived energies and fluxes as input to standard parametrizations in order to obtain ionization-rate and electron-density profiles in the E region (90–150 km). These profiles are then compared to EISCAT ground-based electron density measurements. We compare the data from two satellites, DMSP F17 and F18, to the Tromsø UHF radar profiles. We find that differentiating between the magnetic local time (MLT) “morning” (03:00–11:00 MLT) and “evening” (15:00–23:00 MLT) provides the best fit to the ground-based data. The data agree well in the MLT morning sector using a Maxwellian electron spectrum, while in the evening sector using a Gaussian spectrum and accounting for backscattered electrons achieved optimum agreement with EISCAT. Depending on the satellite and MLT period, the median of the differences varies between 0 % and 20 % above 105 km (F17) and ±15 % above 100 km (F18). Because of the large density gradient below those altitudes, the relative differences get larger, albeit without a substantially increasing absolute difference, with virtually no statistically significant differences at the 1σ level.

Investigation of the Physical Processes Involved in GNSS Amplitude Scintillations at High Latitude: A Case Study

The storm onset on 7 September 2017, triggered several variations in the ionospheric electron density, causing severe phase fluctuations at polar latitudes in both hemispheres. In addition, although quite rare at high latitudes, clear amplitude scintillations were recorded by two Global Navigation Satellite System receivers during the main phase of the storm. This work attempted to investigate the physical mechanisms triggering the observed amplitude scintillations, with the aim of identifying the conditions favoring such events. We investigated the ionospheric background and other conditions that prevailed when the irregularities formed and moved, following a multi-observations approach. Specifically, we combined information from scintillation parameters and recorded by multi-constellation (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) receivers located at Concordia station (75.10°S, 123.35°E) and SANAE IV base (71.67°S, 2.84°W), with measurements acquired by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager on board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program satellites, the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network, the Swarm constellation and ground-based magnetometers. Besides confirming the high degree of complexity of the ionospheric dynamics, our multi-instrument observation identified the physical conditions that likely favor the occurrence of amplitude scintillations at high latitudes. Results suggest that the necessary conditions for the observation of this type of scintillation in high-latitude regions are high levels of ionization and a strong variability of plasma dynamics. Both of these conditions are typically featured during high solar activity.

A Possible Mechanism on the Detachment Between a Subauroral Proton Arc and the Auroral Oval

AbstractSubauroral proton arcs are a type of terrestrial auroral phenomena, which are often detached equatorially from the auroral oval. This work presents evolution of a subauroral proton arc using observations of the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager and Special Sensor J (SSJ) on board Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft. The arc was observed in the afternoon sector and was located within 60°–70° geomagnetic latitude during the recovery phase of a moderate magnetic storm with the minimum SYM‐H index of −55 nT. Particle measurements from DMSP F17/SSJ indicate that the arc was detached from the normal oval and produced by energetic ring current ions with energies above 10 keV. These energetic ions were likely scattered into the magnetic loss cone by electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in the frequency range between 0.1 and 0.5 Hz, as confirmed by Pc1 waves derived from the observations of a ground station. Continuous auroral observations directly show that the subauroral proton arc was detached from the oval during evolution. Following a northward interplanetary magnetic field turning, the auroral oval moved toward higher latitudes. We propose that the equatorward edge of the auroral oval is less influenced by the convection electric field, and thus moves more slowly than the poleward edge. This mechanism is proposed for producing a separation between the equatorward and poleward parts of the auroral oval, with the former evolving into the subauroral proton arc.

Wide-field aurora imager onboard Fengyun satellite: Data products and validation

New observations of auroras based on the wide-field aurora imager (WAI) onboard Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) satellite are exhibited in this paper. Validity of the WAI data is analyzed by comparing auroral boundaries derived from WAI observations with results obtained from data collected by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) aboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP F18). Dynamic variations of the aurora with the solar wind, interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) parameters, and the SYM-H index are also investigated. The comparison of auroral boundaries indicates that the WAI data are morphologically valid and suitable to the study of auroral dynamics. Effective responses to solar wind parameters indicate that the WAI data can be useful to monitor and predict the Earth’s space weather. Since the configuration of aurora is a good indicator of the solar wind–magnetosphere–ionosphere (SW-M-I) coupling system, and can reflect the disturbance of the space environment, the WAI will provide important data to help us to study the physical processes in space.

A new method to subtract dayglow for auroral observation of SSUSI in LBH ranges based on the improved AURIC

A new method to remove the dayglow components for auroral observations from the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) aboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F16 in Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) ranges based on the improved Atmospheric Ultraviolet Radiance Integrated Code (AURIC) algorithm is proposed in this study. This method is developed by determining the coefficients between the dayglow intensities calculated by the improved AURIC algorithm and the dayglow components from SSUSI in the whole 2005. The least-square polynomials are used to fit the calculations to the observations and the coefficients of the polynomials are divided by Ap indices and solar zenith angles (SZA). This algorithm can be used to simulate the dayglow intensity in the northern polar region at an altitude of 110 Km. Three examples with Ap indices 5, 27, 154 are tested to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. The consistency between the original AURIC and the improved AURIC at nadir direction, the derived auroral images and the simulated dayglow images, also the fitting precisions and deviations between the dayglow intensities from improved AURIC and the dayglow intensities from SSUSI, demonstrate that this method is feasible and reliable. The proposed method provides us with a useful tool to separate the dayglow and aurora for space FUV observation.

The Seasonal and Longitudinal Variations of Nighttime OI 135.6‐nm Emission at Equatorial Ionization Anomaly Crests Observed by the DMSP/SSUSI

AbstractNighttime atomic oxygen (OI) 135.6‐nm emission observed by the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) instrument on board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F18 satellite is utilized to investigate the seasonal and longitudinal variations of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crests at a fixed 20:00 local time (LT) from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2015. The OI 135.6‐nm emission intensity at the southern and northern EIA crests for each day is considered as a superposition of zonal mean and Zonal Wavenumbers 1–4 components. On the seasonal‐longitudinal variations of the OI 135.6‐nm emission intensity at both EIA crests, the obvious double‐peak structure appears in equinoxes for all 4 years. The longitudinal peaked structures are also prominent in equinoxes, and Peak‐3 structure dominates. The main results are as follows: (1) The zonal mean emission intensity and amplitudes of Wavenumbers 1–4 components at both EIA crests are also evident in equinoxes and have a major semiannual and annual periods, except for amplitude of Wavenumber 4 at the southern EIA crest; the amplitude of Wavenumber 1 component is generally greater than Wavenumbers 2–4; (2) the phases of Wavenumbers 1 and 2 components at both EIA crests have a 1‐year period, and the seasonal variations of the phase of Wavenumber 1 component at both EIA crests are in phase but antiphase in Wavenumber 2; and (3) the phases of Wavenumbers 1 and 2 components between the OI 135.6‐nm emission intensity and the total electron content (TEC) at both EIA crests are almost consistent in April and solstices.

Importance of Regional‐Scale Auroral Precipitation and Electrical Field Variability to the Storm‐Time Thermospheric Temperature Enhancement and Inversion Layer (TTEIL) in the Antarctic E Region

AbstractA dramatic thermospheric temperature enhancement and inversion layer (TTEIL) was observed by the Fe Boltzmann lidar at McMurdo, Antarctica during a geomagnetic storm (Chu et al. 2011, https://doi.org/10.1029/2011GL050016). The Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) driven by empirical auroral precipitation and background electric fields cannot adequately reproduce the TTEIL. We incorporate the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) auroral precipitation maps, which capture the regional‐scale features into TIEGCM and add subgrid electric field variability in the regions with strong auroral activity. These modifications enable the simulation of neutral temperatures closer to lidar observations and neutral densities closer to GRACE satellite observations (~475 km). The regional scale auroral precipitation and electric field variabilities are both needed to generate strong Joule heating that peaks around 120 km. The resulting temperature increase leads to the change of pressure gradients, thus inducing a horizontal divergence of air flow and large upward winds that increase with altitude. Associated with the upwelling wind is the adiabatic cooling gradually increasing with altitude and peaking at ~200 km. The intense Joule heating around 120 km and strong cooling above result in differential heating that produces a sharp TTEIL. However, vertical heat advection broadens the TTEIL and raises the temperature peak from ~120 to ~150 km, causing simulations deviating from observations. Strong local Joule heating also excites traveling atmospheric disturbances that carry the TTEIL signatures to other regions. Our study suggests the importance of including fine‐structure auroral precipitation and subgrid electric field variability in the modeling of storm‐time ionosphere‐thermosphere responses.
