English Workshops with Simulated Patients and Peers Reduce Medical Students’ Apprehension About Speaking in English

AbstractIn this study, we evaluated workshops with simulated patients and peers to improve English-speaking confidence among medical students. Results showed reduced apprehension when interviewing patients, high course satisfaction, perceived progress in English proficiency, and increased confidence in future interactions with patients, supporting simulation-based methods in medical English education.

THE ROLE OF THEME-BASED APPROACH IN ENHANCING YOUNG LEARNERS’ SPEAKING SKILLS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION

This article highlights the effectiveness of implementing theme-based model of CBI (content-based instruction) in developing young learners’ speaking skills, as well as it offers an effective way of practising a new language in a meaningful and memorable context. We know that teaching speaking in English in primary education is one of the most demanding, at the same time challenging and rewarding jobs, and young learners are “me”-focused learners, respond emotionally to learning activities. Therefore, teachers should know how to create a warm, friendly English atmosphere in the classroom, how to use different types of activities and how to set up activities in order to enable primary school children to work together in groups. Moreover, this article is based on the study conducted with primary school children to identify the effectiveness of using theme-based CBI in teaching speaking, as well as enhancing young learners’ speaking skills.

The Effect of Guided Conversation Method Toward Students’ Speaking Ability in Eleventh-Grade of MAN 2 Bukittinggi

This study aims to investigate the effect of using the guided conversation method on the speaking ability of eleventh-grade students at MAN 2 Bukittinggi. The research was motivated by the observation that students' speaking scores were below the standard, and teaching methods tended to emphasize memorization. Additionally, students struggled with speaking in English and received limited feedback on their performance. This quasi-experimental research involved pre-tests and post-tests with an experimental and control group. The sample consisted of 58 students selected through cluster random sampling, divided equally into two classes. A speaking test was used as the research instrument, and inter-rater reliability was applied to ensure test consistency. Data analysis included normality and homogeneity tests, while hypothesis testing employed paired sample T-tests and independent sample T-tests using SPSS. The results showed a significant improvement in the speaking ability of students taught using the guided conversation method (Sig. < 0.05). Moreover, a comparison between the experimental and control groups revealed a significant difference, with the experimental group achieving higher post-test scores. Thus, it can be concluded that the guided conversation method effectively improves students' speaking ability.

INTERACTIVE VIDEO PROJECT TO BOOST UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ SELF-CONFIDENCE IN ENGLISH PUBLIC SPEAKING

English language proficiency has become essential for those pursuing higher education in our fast-paced environment. A growing demand for jobs in the global workplace is coming from English speakers in particular. For many students, especially those who are non-native speakers of the language, public speaking in English presents a considerable difficulty. This research investigated the effects of an interactive video project on students' public speaking confidence in English. The middle and final exams for students were designed to include project-based learning in addition to classroom activities. In order to receive constructive comments from their lecturer and fellow students, students in this project had to produce and deliver videos on the prescribed themes. In this study, 20 students who had completed an interactive video project for class and the semester exam in Regular English at Universitas Pendidikan Nasional (Undiknas University) Denpasar, Bali, participated in a semi-structured interview and observation of the classroom during a descriptive qualitative approach. This study's conclusions showed that students' self-assessed confidence in their ability to give English public speeches or presentations can significantly increase as a result of the interactive video project. A process of iterative production, presentation, and feedback was combined with the interactive project. Students had an entertaining chance to hone and polish their speaking abilities with the interactive video project.

Alignment Between Student Learning Needs and Classroom Learning Models: Case Study

This research aims to identify the learning needs of students at SMP Muhamadiyah 3 Depok and the main concern of researcher is analyze the alignment between student learning needs and the learning model applied by teachers. Knowing students' learning needs and using appropriate learning models in the classroom is very important in supporting students to achieve learning objectives. The method used in this research is case study. The data were collected by interview and observation. The structure interview distributed to six students from two different VIII classes in the 2023/2024 academic year students and two teachers. Data analysis techniques in this study used narrative analysis. The findings of this research shows that that students' English language skills are still at A1 or Pre-A1 level and face problems such as regular and irregular verbs, spelling, pronunciation, lack of vocabulary, self-confidence speaking in English, limited learning resources, and lack of motivation in learning English. Furthermore, regarding to their learning needs, they wanted more practical learning in English such as speaking English, prefer teaching materials related to fiction and storytelling, and prefer to learn using a combination of learning media such as pictures and videos rather than just using books and worksheets. While, the implementation of the learning model, in this case, did not align with the students' needs, and the teacher still used the lecture method and teacher centers which made students less motivated and contributed during the learning process. Therefore, based on the research findings, it is recommended that teachers have a good understanding of what students need in their learning so the teacher can implement the appropriate model learning that facilitates their learning and able to achieve the learning objectives.

The Impact of Nonverbal Communication on Effective Public Speaking in English

Nonverbal communication (NVC) plays a crucial role in effective public speaking, particularly for English language learners (ELLs) who may face unique challenges in navigating both linguistic and cultural aspects of communication. This study is carried out through a literature review method, following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, to examine the impact of NVC on public speaking among ELLs in higher education settings, and synthesize findings from diverse studies. The review reveals that effective use of NVC significantly enhances perceived credibility, audience engagement, and message clarity for ELLs. Specific nonverbal behaviors, such as maintaining eye contact, using open gestures, and adopting a confident posture, are associated with increased speaker effectiveness. Additionally, the literature highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity in NVC instruction, as nonverbal cues can carry different meanings across cultures. The findings underscore the need for explicit instruction in NVC strategies within English language curricula, emphasizing cultural responsiveness and creating inclusive learning environments that empower ELLs to become confident and effective communicators. This review contributes to the growing body of research on NVC in educational contexts and offers practical implications for English language educators seeking to enhance their students' public speaking skills.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND THE ROLE OF ENGLISH IN A GLOBAL WORLD: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS

English is the most widely used and popular language in the present world. It has been statistically reported that around half of the population of the world speak in English. English is used as mother tongue in many countries. But the people using other than English as a mother tongue have to learn English to cope up with the present day to day life. However, it is also true that mother tongue plays a crucial role in shaping our thoughts and moulding the future lives. It is really praise worthy that Government of India has emphasized in the use of mother tongue in the primary level in NEP 2020. The need to learn English language cannot be ignored in this world of globalization. Moreover, English is a language of technology. The use of internet is almost impossible without knowing English. The importance of English language is seen in many fields of international significance. In the recent years many nations have made English as their chief foreign language in schools and colleges for the most important reasons which is always educational. The demand for a language which is universally intelligible is widely felt and frequently voiced. The need of the hour is to enlighten the future aspirants in the academic discipline that rests on functional relevance. This paper aims to explain how English language has become essential for the people around the world.

The representation of African American identity on screen for a Spanish audience

Existing studies of translations of audio-visual productions that explore African American issues focus exclusively on African American Vernacular English and culturally specific references, the standardisation or omission of which are seen to compromise the originals’ critique of race and their value for in-group identity. This article takes a multimodal approach to three such productions dubbed for a Spanish audience. Firstly, it examines how characters’ African American identity is rendered not only by language but also visually and aurally. Comprehension in dubbed versions is more likely to be affected by non-linguistic matters, such as casting of voice talent. Secondly, it is shown how translations shape the audio-visual creation of a fictional world and extra-diegetic elements that address a particular audience and thus enable in-group identification along ethnic lines. Lastly, an alternative translation strategy is outlined that targets audiences from the international Black diaspora to whom such productions might appeal.

ANALYZING TEACHING SPEAKING METHODS IN DIGITAL ERA

English is an international language used by all elements of world society and creates intense competition for every individual in the world in all aspects. To realize appropriate learning objectives, teaching speaking in English is no exception. The author aims to discover various teaching methods for students in the digital era and the problems encountered when teaching speaking in this digital era. The method used must also be appropriate for the student. This research uses a qualitative literature study design method. The data analysis used in this research reviews some literature related to a problem in this study published in the last five years (2019-2023). The findings from this research are audio-lingual, application of audio-visual, digital storytelling, debate, and using games that are relevant to be used in this digital era so that they are relevant. Then, the problems in teaching speaking are curriculum, lack of preparation in learning, and student anxiety. Every teacher must be able to recognize their students' level of ability, especially in speaking. So, the method chosen can help students to improve their speaking skills.

The Importance of Speaking in English as a Foreign Language between Skillful and Thoughtful Competencies: Studying Sociolinguistics Perspectives

Speaking in a foreign language demands both attentiveness and proficiency in the language itself so that the other person may understand the speech's substance more easily. With the aid of an electronic engine based on Google Scholar data, we undertook a series of data gathering activities to explore the link between competent and mindful English speaking. We want to use this data in a number of international journal articles that address these two factors. Following collection, the data is examined thoroughly as part of a descriptive qualitative research using a coding system. We make sure that the data findings adhere to fair and trustworthy criteria before making any inferences. After discussing the results, we can draw the conclusion that speaking English as a second language calls for careful and competent proficiency in order for the other person to grasp what is being said. This discovery should thus be helpful to many people who are learning English.

Dialect on Trial: An Experimental Examination of Raciolinguistic Ideologies and Character Judgments

The current study examines the effect of dialect for a Black speaker, paying particular attention to the implications for criminal justice processing. Participants in this study heard an audio clip of a Black man describing his weekend and were randomly assigned to hear the account spoken in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) or Mainstream American English (MAE). For half of each sample, the audio clip was described as an alibi. Participants then evaluated the speaker across dimensions related to character and criminality, as well as his race, education, and socio-economic status. Results indicate that the speaker was viewed as having worse character and a greater criminal propensity if he spoke using the AAVE guise rather than the MAE guise. Additionally, participants perceived the AAVE speaker to be more stereotypically Black, less educated, and lower socio-economic status. These findings raise questions about contemporary forms of bias in criminal justice processing.

Self-regulated learning enables some self-motivated students to find opportunities outside the classroom to have face to face and virtual interaction to enhance their English speaking. This study is intended to examine the level of self-regulated motivation of university students to improve their Speaking of English as a foreign language (SRMIS-EFL). Moreover, this study investigates if students' SRMIS-EFL differ accross academic levels. 156 EFL students from an English Department in a private university in Jakarta took part in this study. Self-reported SRMIS-EFL questionnaire was used as the data collecting method. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was then conducted. The findings showed that the overall SRMIS-ELF level of students was high. Moreover, students used various self-regulatory motivation strategies to enhance their EFL speaking skills. As for the aspect of academic level, the results of this study shows that SRMIS-EFL of senior students are lower than SRMIS-EFL of junior students , and there is a statistically significant difference of students’ SRMIS-EFL across academic levels. The findings of this study suggest the need for motivational regulation training into EFL programs to increase students’ awareness of motivational self-regulation strategies to enhance their self-regulated motivation.

HOW DO STUDENTS FACE ENGLISH SPEAKING DIFFICULTIES AT A COASTAL REGENCY OF NATUNA: A CASE STUDY AT AN ISLAMIC STATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

This research describes the analysis of student difficulties in English speaking skills faced by 10th Grade students of MAN 1 Natuna in the 2021/2022 academic year. This research used qualitative research methods. The researcher chose class X IPA 1 as the object with a total of 27 students. In collecting the data, researcher used observations, and interview. From the data analysis, the researcher found some conclusion The problem of students in mastering speaking skills is that students have limited vocabulary, they confused to pronounce words in English, lack grammar, cannot speak fluently, and have difficulty understanding what the speaker is saying. In addition, students inhibit to practice speaking English and usually use their mother tongue. The cause of students having difficulty in mastering speaking skills refers to the learning objectives, it can be concluded that students have psychological factors such as lack of confidence, fear of being wrong, anxiety, shame and lack of motivation that hinders them in practicing speaking in English. These factors, such as fear of making mistakes, are generally caused by their fear of being laughed at by their friends.

Using Flipgrid Videos to Enhance Speaking and Presenting in English for Non-Native Learners

Many previous studies have explored the use of technology-based media in language learning, particularly in speaking lessons. One of the most popular platforms being used today is Flipgrid (FG). The primary objective of this study is to examine how non-native learners respond to the use of FG, which is aimed at enhancing their speaking skills. 40 Japanese students were recruited for this quantitative and qualitative research study. The data collection instruments utilized in this study were questionnaires and interviews. The study revealed that the outstanding positive responses towards FG use are its user-friendly interface, confidence in speaking performance, collaborative peer reviews and feedback, and self-enhancement in learning to speak English, whereas the most negative response is related to the difficulty in the editing and uploading process, which is perceived to be a technological challenge. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that FG, as a viable option, received more positive feedback for effectiveness than negative responses from non-native learners.

Deciphering Linguistic Stereotypes in Polandball Comics: A Qualitative Analysis of 'Engrish' and Cultural Representation

Polandball, or Countryballs, are online user-generated comics about geopolitical satire, with countries personified in spherical characters. One of the most important aspects of Countryball memes is the non-standard English, or Engrish, used in the conversations between characters. This research delves into the Engrish phenomena by collecting and qualitatively examining 200+ comics in the subreddit r/polandball, proposing plausible causes of the phenomena, and raising concerns regarding the implications of the exhibited linguistic stereotypes. The investigation figures out that the language choice in Polandball comics on Reddit generally ranged between serious cultural misunderstanding and code-switching of English with another language. It is concluded that the linguistic stylizations of non-standard English in Polandball comics might be rooted in certain cultural and racial stereotypes and might further reinforce these biased cross-cultural perceptions. The research shed light on the long-ignored African-American Vernacular English appropriation in Polandball comics, and extensively enumerated and identified the most recent Engrish stylizations in Polandball comics.

Digitalization in Learning English Speaking Skill For Broadcasting Students

Broadcasting students need English-speaking skills as a skill that must be mastered. To encourage students in learning English and speaking in English in front of others, researchers asked students to perform their activities when reporting the news. This study aims to find out whether the video repository platform can increase students’ interest in learning English-speaking skills. The method used is qualitative descriptive. Researchers do the speaking test through video in the website to understand the way digitalization make impact on students’ speaking skills in the two classes of broadcasting students. Data were collected through tests, questionnaires, interviews, and observation. The results showed that students became more interested and challenged to show their English-speaking skills and the digitalization in learning English-speaking skill was considered a success in promoting student engagement.&#x0D; Keywords: broadcasting, English speaking, video platform, students’ interest
