Annual and spatial variation in adult and brood abundance in a sub-Arctic wader

ABSTRACT Capsule Numbers of adult Eurasian Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus declined steeply across Iceland’s largest lowland basin during 2012–2021, but the abundance of broods during 2013–2021 did not decline. Sites with more adults generally held more broods. Aims Many Arctic-breeding waders are experiencing population declines, and it is imperative to gain a better understanding of how habitats and demography interplay in driving the dynamics of wader populations. We investigated the temporal and spatial variation in the abundance of Eurasian Whimbrel adults and broods (a proxy for productivity), and also the habitat associations of adults and broods, to assess whether sites holding more adults were also more productive. Methods Temporal and spatial variation in the abundance of Eurasian Whimbrels were analysed using generalized linear models in an 11-year dataset of adult counts and a nine-year dataset of brood counts, collected in a road-based survey across Iceland’s largest lowland region. Results We found a strong decline in the adult population but no trend in brood abundance, which showed high annual variation. Both the adults and broods occurred in a range of semi-natural habitats, but broods occurred less frequently in cultivated, built-up and forested habitats than expected by chance. More broods were associated with survey points that had a higher abundance of adults, suggesting the sites holding more adults are also more productive. Conclusions Spatial variation in brood abundance is largely a proximate product of local adult abundance, whereas its temporal variation seems strongly affected by annual environmental conditions. Incorporating such results into landscape planning, and prioritizing habitats for conservation where adults are more abundant, should also favour more productive sites in this Icelandic population.

Integrating presence‐only and detection/non‐detection data to estimate distributions and expected abundance of difficult‐to‐monitor species on a landscape‐scale

Abstract Estimating species distribution and abundance is foundational to effective management and conservation. Using an integrated species distribution model that combines presence‐only data from various sources with detection/non‐detection data from structured surveys, we estimated the distribution and expected abundance of three difficult‐to‐monitor mammals of management concern across New York State, namely, coyotes (Canis latrans), bobcats (Lynx rufus) and black bears (Ursus americanus). Three distinct landscape‐scale camera trap surveys provided detection/non‐detection data over 9 years between 2013 and 2021, and we augmented those data with incidental records of our focal species from public repositories. We used an inhomogeneous Poisson point process to construct an integrated model that fit both data types simultaneously. We demonstrate a simple application of spatial point density of all species records in the accessed public databases to inform the thinning process to account for unknown spatial sampling in the presence‐only data, often referred to as the ‘magic covariate’. Using this approach, we examine habitat associations and provide spatially explicit estimates in expected abundance across the entirety of New York State for all three focal species. As expected, coyotes were the most widely distributed and abundant species, with a strong positive association with agricultural land uses. Bobcats exhibited low expected abundance throughout the state and showed positive associations with deciduous forest and forest edge, and a negative association with road density. Finally, we observed considerable spatial variation in abundance of black bears with expected abundance increasing in association with various forest cover and composition covariates and decreasing with crop cover. We present insights into habitat associations and spatial variation in abundance, and provide management implications for each of the species of interest. Synthesis and applications. Our integrated modelling method allows for managers to use citizen sightings combined with detection/non‐detection surveys to estimate robust indices of abundance for both high‐ and low‐density, and wide‐spread versus patchily distributed species. Through comparison with previous studies, we highlight how broad‐scale programmes, such as the statewide efforts to estimate species distributions undertaken here, can benefit substantively from integrated models that leverage additional data (here, incidental records) from a larger region of space, and thus capture more landscape heterogeneity than is plausible within formalized surveys alone.

Structural attributes and macrofaunal assemblages associated with rose gorgonian gardens (Leptogorgia sp. nov.) in Central Chile: opening the door for conservation actions

Gorgonians (like corals) are important habitat-forming organisms that support a diversity of macrofauna. This study explored structural attributes of gorgonian gardens formed by rose gorgonians (Leptogorgia sp. nov.) and associated macrofaunal assemblages in Caleta Pichicuy (Central Chile). Hierarchical sampling was conducted at 20 m depth (maximum colony abundances) in order to assess spatial variability in abundance and colony attributes at two spatial scales (among sites and rocky walls). The abundance and composition of the associated vagile and sessile macrofauna were also examined using univariant (Taxa richness and Shannon index (H’e)) and multivariant approaches and were compared with adjacent bare rocky habitats. Our results showed a high abundance of gorgonians (ca. 28.9–36.5 colonies m−2) compared to other gorgonian gardens in the world. For structural attributes, our results showed smaller colonies with thicker holdfasts in more exposed sites, suggesting the influence of hydrodynamic forces on the colony morphology. Taxa richness and H’e of vagile fauna showed threefold and twofold, respectively, higher values in gorgonian gardens compared to bare walls, but no differences were observed for sessile fauna. In addition, PCoA and PERMANOVA evidenced a distinctive assemblages’ composition between habitats for both vagile and sessile fauna. Correlation analyzes and dbRDA showed, however, little association between structural attributes and associated faunal assemblages (R2 = 0.06, and ca. 3–9.4% of the total variation explained, respectively). Our results constitute the first assessment of structural habitat complexity and accompanying fauna in these gorgonian gardens and establish the baseline for understanding possible future changes associated to human activities.

Factors shaping the abundance of two butterflies sharing resources and enemies across a biogeographic region

AbstractAimIntraspecific variation in species relative abundance is shaped by a complex interplay of abiotic and biotic factors, making it both necessary and challenging to assess their combined relative importance in explaining variations across space and time. We used two congeneric butterfly species for which extensive count data and a deep understanding of their natural history is available to test three hypotheses explaining intraspecific variation in their abundance: (H1) seasonal dispersal behaviour driven by climate, (H2) resource availability and (H3) apparent competition mediated via shared parasitoids.TaxonGonepteryx rhamni (Brimstone) and G. cleopatra (Cleopatra).LocationNE Iberian Peninsula, where both species coexist, and a nearby archipelago (Balearic Islands), where only Cleopatra occurs.MethodsWe analysed spatial abundance variations for both species in the mainland and island–mainland differences in the abundance of Cleopatra. Abiotic and biotic factors, including temperature, host plant and overwintering habitat availability, larval parasitism and density dependence, were tested to explain the observed variations.ResultsH1 can explain variation in butterfly abundance between mainland regions since in warmer summers populations increased in cooler areas but decreased in warmer areas. H2 explains the variation within mainland climate regions with a strong positive relationship between resource availability and abundance but is unlikely to explain the island–mainland variation in the abundance of Cleopatra. H3 could neither explain biogeographical variation in abundance because although richer parasitoid communities were found on the mainland, larval mortality rates were similar or lower on the mainland than in the islands.Main ConclusionsClimate and resource availability jointly account for variation in butterfly abundance across the mainland, but neither these factors nor parasitism can explain island–mainland differences. Both coexisting butterfly species and their larval parasitoids may have undergone evolutionary processes, resulting in spatial segregation that promotes the coexistence of the two butterfly species on the mainland.

Abundant‐core thinking clarifies exceptions to the abundant‐center distribution pattern

Understanding variation in abundance within species' ranges is fundamental for ecological and evolutionary theory and applied conservation science. The abundant‐center model provides a general hypothesis based on basic ecological principles and macroscale biogeographic patterns: abundance should peak near the center of a species' range, where environmental conditions are most favorable, and decline towards the periphery. Despite longstanding influence in ecological thinking, consistent support for the ubiquity of abundant‐center distributions remains elusive, and recent assessments have questioned the value of this paradigm altogether. We suggest that revisiting the simplifying assumptions that underly the model provides a productive path forward by clarifying predictions and revealing expectations for alternative distribution patterns. Towards this end, we use standardized abundance surveys of North American birds to reassess the prevalence of abundant‐center distributions in geographic and climate space, test whether deviations are associated with predictable violations of assumptions, and provide more robust expectations. After accounting for common methodological pitfalls, we find that geographic centrality is generally indicative of centrality in climate space (confirming a key model assumption) and that abundant‐center distributions occurred in 71% of passerines. To better understand exceptions, we introduce the concept of abundant‐core distributions, of which the abundant‐center is a special case. We find that 87% of species fit abundant‐core expectations, with abundances peaked and generally declining from a core region within the range. Abundance cores tended to deviate from geographic center where topographic features complicate correspondence between geography and environmental conditions (e.g. the climatically heterogenous west). Such deviations were often associated with truncated climatic availability, with core regions offset towards the continental edge or climate extremes. Overall, our analyses suggest that abundant‐center thinking provides a useful generalization for understanding spatial variation in abundance for many species. However, as with any model, its assumptions must be assessed within the context of given applications.

Biophysical predictors of spatial variation in abundance and population dynamics of an invasive decapod

AbstractPopulation dynamics of invasive species and their impacts on native communities vary substantially geographically and in different environmental contexts. Therefore, effective management of invasive species requires understanding how habitat characteristics, anthropogenic effects, or other perturbations can influence their abundance and impacts on native communities at multiple spatial and temporal scales. This is particularly challenging when geographically widespread, long‐term data are lacking. The Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, is a well‐studied invader on the Atlantic North American coast. A few studies suggest that its populations may be declining in parts of its introduced range, but spatial variation in its population dynamics is considerable even among geographically proximal habitats. We explore the ability of habitat characteristics and prey availability to predict abundance of the Asian shore crab at 12 rocky intertidal sites in southern New England over 5 years (2014–2018). Overall, abundance of the Asian shore crab increased non‐linearly with time, with the rate of increase declining over time, but abundance varied among sites and population dynamics were spatially asynchronous. Aspects of habitat complexity and disturbance strongly contributed to variation in abundance, but the most important predictors reflected complex and non‐linear interactions among sea surface temperature, latitude, and prey abundance. The influence of prey abundance and latitude on crab abundance were modulated by the survey years, which underscores the importance of temporal variation in mediating the species–habitat relationship. Uncovering such intricate dynamics warrants long‐term data on population trends and impacts of invasive species, geographically replicated at multiple sites to capture regional heterogeneity.

Population size, abundance, habitat relationships and the result of a translocation programme in the Gran Canaria Blue ChaffinchFringilla polatzeki

SummaryThe Gran Canaria Blue ChaffinchFringilla polatzekiis a threatened, endemic, forest‐dwelling bird species of the Canary Islands, whose core population at the end of the 20th century was restricted to the pine forests of Inagua Nature Reserve (38 km2). A translocation programme released birds from a breeding centre into the nearby (<3 km) pine forests of La Cumbre in the years following 2010. From 2015 to 2019 the La Cumbre population was reinforced by translocation of wild juveniles from the source population of Inagua. We estimate the population size, the spatial variation of abundance, and recent temporal changes in density of the species in Inagua and La Cumbre by means of line transects, distance sampling, and habitat suitability modelling using random forests. The average density of the Blue Chaffinch in Inagua Nature Reserve was 10.2 birds/km2in spring 2019, with a population estimated at 362 birds (95% CI: 257–489). The most important variables affecting the distribution of the Blue Chaffinch in Inagua were the amount of precipitation during the summer (July–September), the solar radiation in June, and the northern position in the reserve, highlighting the importance of abiotic factors related to thermal and hydric stress during the breeding season. The density was considerably lower in the translocated population inhabiting 21 km2of pine forests in La Cumbre (3.3 birds/km2), with an estimate of 68 Blue Chaffinches (35–141) breeding freely in the wild. The translocation programme successfully contributed to the establishment of a second viable nucleus, accounting for 16% of the total population within a time span of 10 years. This result reinforces the role of translocations in preventing extinctions of endangered species with very low population sizes restricted to only one isolated area.

Functional habitat suitability and urban encroachment explain temporal and spatial variations in abundance of a declining farmland bird, the Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax

Species response to land use can be examined under a functional perspective, where habitats are described according to species´ resource dependencies. Distribution or abundance models based on resource availability rather than land use types can be more informative about the ultimate processes behind observed population or distribution trends. Habitat use may depend on resources available, as well as disturbances that affect accessibility to such resources. Increasing human presence and urban encroachment may thus alter the relationships between habitat suitability and species abundance. Using 10 years of field data, we investigated whether variability in Little Bustard (<em>Tetrax tetrax</em>) abundance was explained by functional habitat suitability (assessed through resource-based models) and urban encroachment. We found that spatial and temporal variations in Little Bustard abundance were explained by functional habitat suitability and avoidance of urban areas, but that the significance of each variable varied with spatial scale. Little Bustard abundance at each observation point significantly increased with local nesting but not foraging habitat suitability, and decreased with increasing proportion of urban areas. At larger spatial scales, temporal changes in Little Bustard abundance were highly significantly related to changes in foraging habitat suitability. Moreover, the positive relationship between foraging habitat suitability and Little Bustard abundance weakened as the proportion of urban areas increased, and almost disappeared when the proportion of urban areas was more than 5%. Our results underline the benefits of using resource-based models to better understand processes that relate animal abundance and habitat suitability, while simultaneously considering avoided elements of the landscape.

A quantitative review of abundance‐based species distribution models

The contributions of species to ecosystem functions or services depend not only on their presence but also on their local abundance. Progress in predictive spatial modelling has largely focused on species occurrence rather than abundance. As such, limited guidance exists on the most reliable methods to explain and predict spatial variation in abundance. We analysed the performance of 68 abundance‐based species distribution models fitted to 800 000 standardised abundance records for more than 800 terrestrial bird and reef fish species. We found a large amount of variation in the performance of abundance‐based models. While many models performed poorly, a subset of models consistently reconstructed range‐wide abundance patterns. The best predictions were obtained using random forests for frequently encountered and abundant species and for predictions within the same environmental domain as model calibration. Extending predictions of species abundance outside of the environmental conditions used in model training generated poor predictions. Thus, interpolation of abundances between observations can help improve understanding of spatial abundance patterns, but our results indicate extrapolated predictions of abundance under changing climate have a much greater uncertainty. Our synthesis provides a road map for modelling abundance patterns, a key property of species distributions that underpins theoretical and applied questions in ecology and conservation.

Patterns of abundance reveal evidence of translocation and climate effects on Houbara bustard population recovery

AbstractPopulation reinforcement, through translocations of individuals, aims to restore populations of threatened species. The increase in population size or geographic distribution is often used as positive facts when assessing the recovery of a species, making abundance monitoring a major criterion. Based on 8‐year monitoring of a reinforced population of North African Houbara bustard (Chlamydotis undulata undulata), over an area of 50 170 km² in the eastern region of Morocco, we assessed the success of management actions by assessing spatial and temporal variation in abundance as well as the factors driving this variation. We used count data to estimate and spatialize population abundance. We then assessed environmental (climate) and management covariates (release effort and hunting management) associated with temporal and spatial variation in abundance. The overall estimate of abundance in the study area was 16 918 individuals (95% CI = 13 629–21 027) over our study period, with strong variation between years (range = 10 409–32 401). Our results highlighted strong spatial heterogeneity over the study area, linked to spatial variation in local climate and management conditions. Local abundances were negatively associated with local temperature, were higher in hunting than in non‐hunting areas, and were positively influenced by the number of birds released around the focal point. In addition to describing the spatio‐temporal variation in the abundance of the species on a large scale, we estimated two major proxies of its conservation status: population size and population trend. The determination of these proxies and the comparison with the counterfactual state of the species confirms the beneficial impact of the restoration and protection program on the dynamics of the North African Houbara bustard, while underlining the dependence of these dynamics on ongoing management.

Some Effects of endo-Brevicomin Background on Southern Pine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Aggregation Behavior

Semiochemical background in the environment can influence insect orientation to release points of the same or different semiochemicals. endo-Brevicomin is a pheromone component of the tree-killing bark beetle Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) that has a biphasic dose-response curve, enhancing attraction at low release rates but reducing attraction at high rates. We investigated the effect of artificial manipulation of background levels of endo-brevicomin on D. frontalis responses to sources of aggregation attractant in the field. Traps baited with the aggregation pheromone component frontalin and the host odor alpha-pinene were deployed either with or without a background of endo-brevicomin produced by three surrounding dispensers of this semiochemical each located 20 m away. Two tested levels of endo-brevicomin background caused catches to increase by an order of magnitude above those in the absence of background. Presence of background also altered the beetles' biphasic dose-response when endo-brevicomin dispensers were added to traps. Background reduced or concealed attraction-enhancement otherwise observed for low-release dispensers added to traps, and it decreased the release rate necessary to produce reductions in catches. We propose that spatial variability in abundance of natural, background sources of endo-brevicomin in the environment (i.e., infested trees) is a cause of the observed variability in effects of endo-brevicomin dispensers on southern pine beetle behavior in the field. Furthermore, our results illustrate the potential complexity of the density-dependent effects of biphasic pheromone components on bark beetle mass attack and colonization behavior.

Assessment and novel application ofN‐mixture models for aerial surveys of wildlife

AbstractAerial surveys are a critical tool for inference of wildlife populations, yet are limited by current available methods to account for imperfect detection without marking animals.N‐mixture models use count data from replicate surveys for estimation of wildlife abundance while accounting for imperfect detection. This statistical framework was recently developed but is rarely applied to aerial surveys of terrestrial wildlife. We applied anN‐mixture model incorporating temporary emigration to a novel aerial survey design to estimate the availability, detection probability, and abundance of an unmarked population of white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Michigan, USA, using surveys in 2014 and 2016. We assessed the selection of the sample unit size for theN‐mixture model in a post hoc sensitivity analysis and compared all estimates to a hierarchical distance sampling (HDS) approach. Hierarchical distance sampling is an expansion of conventional distance sampling (CDS), a standard method applied to aerial survey designs for wildlife, where HDS allows for modeling spatial variation in abundance and detection probability using environmental covariates and can account for changing population demographics. We foundN‐mixture models produced similar parameter estimates to HDS with both models inferring a population increase between years, which was consistent with independently available estimates for this population (2014N‐mixture = 402 [CI: 303.8–515.27], and HDS = 391 [CI: 297.67–504.63]; 2016N‐mixture = 732 [CI: 572.89–924.22], and HDS = 708 [CI: 552.45–893.89]). Estimates from both models were sensitive to the sample unit size selected in an open population framework. We recommend using ecological (e.g., home range size) and statistical (e.g., sample size) considerations when selecting a sample unit size that reflects the movement ecology of a species and evaluating the sensitivity of parameters to sample unit size. In our study,N‐mixture models and HDS models afforded a practical field approach and analytical methodology that resulted in precise estimation in a population of unmarked deer over time. When used with aerial surveys in terrestrial systems where distance sampling methods may be difficult to implement,N‐mixture models can address observer error and estimate populations for conservation and management goals without marking individual animals.

Species composition and chemical characterization of Sargassum influx at six different locations along the Mexican Caribbean coast

In the last decade, unprecedented arrivals of pelagic Sargassum (Sargassum influx) have been reported for the Caribbean coasts causing severe ecological and economical affectations and remarking the necessity to characterize the phenomenon. In the north coast of the Mexican Caribbean, spatial characterization of Sargassum influx was performed in terms of its abundance, species composition and chemical content using a combination of in situ sampling and remote sensing evaluations. Sargassum influx was detected within the 25 km fringe near to Quintana Roo coast in coincidence with beach-cast events during September 2018. Significant spatial variation in abundance and species composition of the stranded biomass was found for the six localities studied, which was related to the local environmental conditions. Pelagic species of Sargassum were the main component ranging from 78.1 to 99.6% of the total beach-cast (wrack) fresh biomass, whereas benthic macrophytes (seagrasses and macroalgae) were a minor component reaching up to 21% in some localities. The biochemical composition of beach-cast Sargassum resulted spatially homogeneous for most of the components analyzed; only carbon tissue content, ash metals (particularly Fe and As) and isotopic composition changed spatially. This study represents baseline information for the region. Long-term seasonal evaluations of Sargassum influx along Mexican Caribbean are required to define adequate management strategies and exploitation.

Correspondence between DOM molecules and microbial community in a subtropical coastal estuary on a spatiotemporal scale

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) changes in quantity and quality over time and space, especially in highly dynamic coastal estuaries. Bacterioplankton usually display seasonal and spatial variations in abundance and composition in the coastal regions, and influence the DOM pool via assimilation, transformation and release of organic molecules. The change in DOM can also affect the composition of bacterial community. However, little is known on the correspondence between DOM molecules and bacterial composition, particularly through a systematic field survey. In this study, the spatiotemporal signatures of microbial communities and DOM composition in the subtropical coastal estuary of Xiamen are investigated over one and half years. The co-occurrence analysis between bacteria and DOM suggested microorganisms likely transformed the DOM from a relatively high (>400 Da) to a low (<400 Da) molecular weight, corresponding to an apparent increase in overall aromaticity. This might be the reason why microbial transformation renders “dark” organic matter visible in mass spectrometry due to more efficient ionization of microbial metabolites, as well as photodegradation processes. K- and r-strategists exhibited different correlations with two-size categories of DOM molecules owing to their different lifestyles and responses to environmental nutrient conditions. A comparison of the environmental variables and DOM composition with the microbial communities showed that the environmental/DOM variations played a more important role in shaping the microbial communities than vice versa. This study sheds light on the interactions between microbial populations and DOM molecules at the spatiotemporal scale, improving our understanding of microbial roles in marine biogeochemical cycles.

Spatial and temporal distribution of Culicoides species in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia between 1990 and 2018.

Culicoides are one of the smallest hematophagous flies measuring 1–5 mm in size with only females seeking blood for egg development. The present study investigated spatio-temporal distribution of Culicoides species trapped between 1990 and 2018 at 13 sites in the New England region of NSW, Australia using automated light traps. Trapping locations were divided into three subregions (tablelands, slopes and plains). Nineteen Culicoides species were identified. Culicoides marksi and C. austropalpalis were the most abundant and widespread species. Culicoides brevitarsis, the principal vector of livestock diseases in New South Wales comprised 2.9% of the total catch and was detected in 12 of the 13 locations in the study. Abundance as determined by Log10 Culicoides count per trapping event for the eight most abundant species did not vary significantly with season but trended towards higher counts in summer for C. marksi (P = 0.09) and C. austropalpalis (P = 0.05). Significant geographic variation in abundance was observed for C. marksi, C. austropalpalis and C. dycei with counts decreasing with increasing altitude from the plains to the slopes and tablelands. Culicoides victoriae exhibited the reverse trend in abundance (P = 0.08). Greater abundance during the warmer seasons and at lower altitudes for C. marksi and C. austropalpalis was indicative of temperature and rainfall dependence in this region with moderate summer dominance in rainfall. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index of species was higher on the tablelands (H = 1.59) than the slopes (H = 1.33) and plains (H = 1.08) with evenness indices of 0.62, 0.46 and 0.39 respectively. Culicoides species on the tablelands were more diverse than on the slopes and plains where C. marksi and C. austropalpalis dominated. The temporal and spatial variation in abundance, diversity and evenness of species reported in this diverse region of Australia provides additional insight into Culicoides as pests and disease vectors and may contribute to future modelling studies.

Seasonal and spatial variation in abundance of the copepod Calanus sinicus: Effects of decreasing dissolved oxygen and small jellyfish bloom in northern Yellow Sea, China, nearshore waters

A hypoxia event occurred in the nearshore of the northern Yellow Sea in summer 2016, and a bloom of small jellyfish occurred in June of this year. As a key copepod species in the Yellow Sea, Calanus sinicus exhibits early recruitment mainly in this nearshore area. Therefore, this study assessed the effects of these two phenomena on C. sinicus especially on their early recruitment. Sampling in nearshore waters was performed every month from May to December, except for October 2016. The numerical abundance of eggs and nauplii (E + N), copepodites and adults (C + A) of C. sinicus was determined in relation to environmental factors. Results showed that dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations decreased from June on, attaining a minimum in August, and showed a significant positive relationship with C. sinicus E + N abundance. This suggested that decreasing DO had potential negative effects on early recruitment of C. sinicus. The abundance of small jellyfish, dominated by Sugiura chengshanense (Hydromedusa), also showed a significant positive relationship with C. sinicus E + N abundance, indicating a potential predator-prey relationship between them. Spatial relationships were also examined between E + N abundance and DO concentration in July and with small jellyfish abundance in June. Both bottom DO (B-DO) and E + N abundance in inshore waters were significantly lower than those in offshore water in July, indicating a potential negative effect of low B-DO (<6 mg L−1) in nearshore water. Spatial variation of small jellyfish abundance showed no correlation with C. sinicus abundance in June, but the non-overlapping patchy distribution also suggested their potential predator-prey relationship. Together, both the seasonal and spatial results indicated that low DO and a small jellyfish bloom in nearshore waters had detrimental effects on early recruitment of C. sinicus. These negative effects thus have the potential to indirectly impact the trophodynamics of fishery resources in the northern Yellow Sea.

Environmental influence on the picophytoplankton community structure in the central and northern Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal (BoB) is a low productive, oligotrophic ecosystem. The picophytoplankton (Pico; <3μm) play a significant role in the biogeochemistry of such ecosystems. The information on the Pico is exiguous from this Bay. Here, the seasonal and spatial variations in abundance and carbon biomass of the Pico groups were investigated (July’08 to April’09) in the central and northern BoB in relation to the environmental conditions. Surface samples were collected from twenty-two stations across the Chennai–Port Blair–Kolkata sector. The Synechococcus group was dominant during most of the year, both in abundance and biomass, with few exceptions when Prochlorococcus dominated the Pico community. The Synechococcus abundance and carbon biomass were higher in the nutrient-rich coastal regions and correlated negatively with salinity. The picoeukaryotes exhibited a distribution pattern similar to Synechococcus, although relatively lower in numbers and biomass. The Prochlorococcus abundance and biomass were higher in the open ocean regions of the central BoB (CBoB). The relatively lower abundance of Prochlorococcus in the northern BoB implies an influence of the freshwater influx, as depicted from the positive correlation with salinity. During the winter monsoon, a cyclonic storm coincided with a deep mixed layer characterized by high concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll-a in the CBoB. The Pico abundance and biomass were relatively higher during this period, with the Prochlorococcus dominating the former and Synechococcus, the latter. The real-time observations of the surface distribution of Pico abundance and carbon biomass in the BoB revealed seasonal variations that were modulated by the episodic mesoscale features.

Partitioning beta diversity to unravel mechanisms underlying the distributions of nonvolant small mammls in Brazil’s Cerrado

Abstract Species distributions and the mechanisms that produce patterns in the occupation space are recurrent themes in community ecology. Here, we examine beta diversity among assemblages of small mammals in the Cerrado domain of Brazil to partition the effects of turnover and nestedness on species distributions. Our objective was to evaluate whether balanced spatial variation in abundance (β bal) and abundance gradients (β gra) are congruent within and among habitats and localities of the Brazilian Cerrado. In addition, we wanted to understand whether ecological mechanisms, such as dispersal limitation, habitat filtering, and species sorting, drive the distribution patterns of the Cerrado small mammals. We analyzed the occurrence and abundances of small mammals from 16 localities widely distributed across the Cerrado biome, and grouped our data with respect to two distinct spatial scales. Baselga’s Bray–Curtis index of dissimilarity and its respective partitions, i.e., balanced variation in abundance (β bal) and abundance gradients (β gra), were estimated between sampling units at the two spatial scales. Thus, we used exponential models to search for distance decay in species similarity between pairs of localities and between similar habitats. Our results show that differences between small mammal assemblages in the Cerrado are driven mainly by species replacement rather than independent gain or loss of species, both at small and large scales. The spatial turnover patterns of small mammals in the Cerrado biome are determined by a combination of large scale (biogeographic, spatial) and local mechanisms (low dispersal and habitat specificity). However, processes occurring at small scales seem to be more important in species sorting than processes occurring at large scales. The spatial configuration of the landscape and the extent and quality of habitats strongly influence the rate of species turnover in Cerrado. Thus, protecting the different types of habitats should be of prime importance to conserving the diversity of Cerrado small mammals.

Spatial heterogeneity in population change of the globally threatened European turtle dove in Spain: The role of environmental favourability and land use

AbstractAimTo describe the population trend for European turtle doves in Spain. To identify favourable and unfavourable areas for the species and to test whether favourability or land use explain spatial variation in abundance change.LocationMainland Spain.MethodsWe used generalized linear models with extensive abundance data to describe population change for the European turtle dove across Spain. We used breeding distribution (presence/absence) data at 100 km2 resolution to model environmental favourability in relation to topo‐climatic and land use variables. Finally, we tested whether land use and favourability explained spatial variation in abundance trends.ResultsThe large Spanish turtle dove population declined by 37% between 1996 and 2018. Favourability was highest in the south, east and north–west of Spain and lowest in the north and at higher altitudes. Abundance trends were more negative in areas of lower environmental favourability and in localities dominated by arboreal habitats such as forests, “dehesas” (open agro‐forestry landscapes with scattered Quercus trees), transitional woodland shrubs or sclerophyllous vegetation (a mixture of sclerophyllous shrubs with some scattered trees). Trends were more positive in localities dominated by complex cultivation (small parcels of mixed crop types, including woody permanent crops like olive, or almond trees or vineyards).Main conclusionsOur study highlights a substantial recent decline in the numerically important turtle dove breeding population in Spain. Declines in abundance were more strongly associated with arboreal (forest and shrub areas) rather than agricultural habitats, highlighting an urgent need for further research into the ecology of this important quarry species in arboreal breeding habitats in southern Europe.

Density dependence on multiple spatial scales maintains spatial variation in both abundance and traits

Population density affects fitness through various processes, such as mate finding and competition. The fitness of individuals in a population can in turn affect its density, making population density a key quantity linking ecological and evolutionary processes. Density effects are, however, rarely homogeneous. Different life-history processes can be affected by density over different spatial scales. In birds, for example, competition for food may depend on the number of birds nesting in the direct vicinity, while competition for nesting sites may occur over larger areas. Here we investigate how the effects of local density and of density in a nearby patch can jointly affect the emergence of spatial variation in abundance as well as phenotypic diversification. We study a two-patch model that is described by coupled ordinary differential equations. The patches have no intrinsic differences: they both have the same fitness function that describes how an individual’s fitness depends on density in its own patch as well as the density in the other patch. We use a phase-space analysis, combined with a mathematical stability analysis to study the long-term behaviour of the system. Our results reveal that the mutual effect that the patches have on each other can lead to the emergence and long-term maintenance of a low and a high density patch. We then add traits and mutations to the model and show that different selection pressures in the high and low density patch can lead to diversification between these patches. Via eco-evolutionary feedbacks, this diversification can in turn lead to changes in the long-term population densities: under some parameter settings, both patches reach the same equilibrium density when mutations are absent, but different equilibrium densities when mutations are allowed. We thus show how, even in the absence of differences between patches, interactions between them can lead to differences in long-term population density, and potentially to trait diversification.
