Impact of Local Site Conditions on Simulation of Non-stationary Spatial Variable Seismic Motions

It is commonly accepted that multi-scale structures are subject to spatially variable seismic motions. This spatial variability of seismic motions is described by different intensities at different locations due to the coherency loss effect, wave passage effect and local site conditions. For multi-scale structures, the estimation of seismic excitations must consider these factors. Often, the influence of the spatial variability of seismic motion on the dynamic response of structures is performed by neglecting the site effect. In several cases, it has been observed that the high intensities of seismic motion are caused by the site amplification besides coherency loss and wave passage effects. This study aims to analyze the impact of local site conditions on seismic motions. For this purpose, a method of simulation of spatially variable seismic motions is performed. The seismic signals on the bedrock are defined by considering a target power spectral density and a coherency loss model. According to the seismic wave propagation theory, the projection of these seismic motions on the surface is realized. The results of this study show that neglecting the local site conditions induces an undervaluation of spatially variable seismic excitations.

Accounting for the Spatial Variability of Seismic Motion in the Pushover Analysis of Regular and Irregular RC Buildings in the New Italian Building Code

Pushover analysis is the main methodology adopted in practice-oriented applications for investigating the non-linear response of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings; it is applicable for both new and existing buildings. It is well-known that several limitations characterize this methodology and the scientific literature proposes several non-conventional approaches to provide results comparable to those of the more efficient nonlinear dynamic analysis. In most recent seismic guidelines, some improvements have been introduced, in order to overcome the main drawbacks of conventional pushover methods, in view of practice-oriented applications. In particular, new prescriptions are related to the load profiles and the choice of control nodes, aspects that lead to different results in terms of capacity curves and in the safety assessment. Another relevant point is represented by the spatial combination of effects, which suggests the opportunity of executing simultaneous bi-directional pushover analyses. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of the new trends followed by some guidelines about pushover analysis, such as the recent 2018 release of the Italian Building Code. In particular, after a general test of the new conventional procedure for the case of RC buildings, a set of case studies has been generated, consisting of three-dimensional RC-archetypes specifically designed and investigated in order to cover the more significant scenarios. The results in terms of global and local performances are processed and critically analyzed, with the aim of appraising the main differences between the traditional and new approaches and identifying the effectiveness and of the actual improvements achieved.

Erratum to: Implications of non-synchronous excitation induced by nonlinear site amplification and of soil-structure interaction on the seismic response of multi-span bridges founded on piles

This work investigates the effects of soil-structure interaction and spatial variability of seismic motion due to nonlinear site amplification on the seismic behaviour of long multi-span bridges founded on piles. An analysis framework able to include the spatial variation of ground motion induced by specific geological and geomorphological scenarios in the seismic soil-structure interaction analysis of long bridges is adopted, exploiting advantages of the substructure approach. The methodology is applied to a case study constituted by a pile-supported multi-span bridge founded in a soft clay deposit overlaying a stiff bedrock with three different configurations: horizontal, inclined and wedge-shaped. The reference input motion at the outcropping bedrock is represented by a set of real accelerograms and different seismic response models are used to compute site amplification effects, discussing the contribution to the free-field ground motion of both the two-dimensional configuration of the deposit and the nonlinear soil behaviour. The ground motions obtained from the different models are then used for computing the foundation input motion accounting for the pile–soil kinematic interaction; thereafter, inertial interaction analyses are performed on structural models with either fixed or compliant base, considering the non-synchronous seismic actions at the piers foundation. The results, compared in terms of piers head displacements, ductility demand and deck transverse bending moments, finally show the relative importance of bedrock morphology, soil nonlinearity and soil-structure interaction on the structural response.

A Grid‐Based Method to Represent the Covariance Structure for Earthquake Ground Motion

Spatial variation of earthquake ground motion is an important phenomenon that cannot be ignored in the design and safety of strategic structures. However, almost all the procedures for the evaluation of variation assumed that the random field is homogeneous in space. It is obvious that reality does not fully conform to the assumption. How to investigate the inhomogeneous feature of ground motion in space is a challenge for researcher. A body‐fitted grid‐coordinates‐based method is proposed to estimate and describe the local spatial variations for the earthquake ground motion; it need not to make the assumption that the random field of earthquake is homogeneous in space. An analysis of spatial variability of seismic motion in smart‐1 array monitored in Lotung, Taiwan demonstrates this methodology.

Stochastic model of seismic torsional ground motion: Application to Lotung soft site

The purpose of this paper is to present a stochastical approach, which analyse the torsional ground motion, induced by the spatial variability of seismic motions. For this purpose, a torsional ground motion analytical model is proposed and a normalised differential motion parameter is introduced. The approach regards the seismic motion as the combination of a travelling wave on the site (coherent component) and a zero mean randomizing factor that introduces a loss of correlation effect. The soil parameters as fundamental frequency and damping coefficient are integrating by modeling the coherent component with the commonly used Kanai-Tajimi power spectral density. The parametric analysis of the model shows an increase of the induced torsion with both the soil frequency and the motion scattering parameter, and a decrease with the separation distance, the apparent wave velocity and the correlation length. Finally, in order to test the proposed torsional ground motion model prediction, it is compared to the experimental results recorded by the EPRI LSST array in Lotung, Taiwan (Laouami and Labbe, 2002). The comparison leads to the identification of the model parameters for the Lotung soft site.

Effects of Local Soil Conditions on the Topographic Aggravation of Seismic Motion: Parametric Investigation and Recorded Field Evidence from the 1999 Athens Earthquake

During the 1999 Athens earthquake, the town of Adames, located on the eastern side of the Kifissos river canyon, experienced unexpectedly heavy damage. Despite the particular geometry of the slope that caused significant motion amplification, topography effects alone cannot explain the uneven damage distribution within a 300-m zone parallel to the canyon’s crest, which is characterized by a rather uniform structural quality. In this article, we illustrate the important role of soil stratigraphy and material heterogeneity on the topographic aggravation of surface ground motion. For this purpose, we first conduct an extensive time-domain parametric study using idealized stratified profiles and Gaussian stochastic fields to characterize the spatial distribution of soil properties, and using Ricker wavelets to describe the seismic input motion; the results show that both topography and local soil conditions significantly affect the spatial variability of seismic motion. We next perform elastic two-dimensional wave propagation analyses based on available local geotechnical and seismological data and validate our results by comparison with aftershock recordings.

Experimental analysis of seismic torsional ground motion recorded by the LSST‐Lotung array

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to perform an experimental analysis of the amplitude of full‐scale spatial variability of seismic motions with regard to earthquake engineering. The LSST‐Lotung array in Taiwan provides a good set of records for this type of study. Of interest are the free‐field torsional seismic components induced by the spatial variability of seismic motions. In this study, three events have been considered: LSST‐06, LSST‐07 and LSST‐16. In time domain analysis, the experimental results obtained show that when the separation distance increases, the induced torsion decreases, and the normalized differential motion parameter increases. Also, the results show that the stronger the event, in terms of maximum PGA, the larger the induced torsional amplitude and the smaller the induced normalized differential motion parameter. Analytical approach for evaluation of the seismic ground motion coherency function

In this paper, a stochastical approach for the investigation and the comprehension of the spatial variation of the seismic motions is presented. For this purpose, a coherency function analytical model is proposed. The approach regards the seismic motion as the combination of a traveling wave on the site (coherent component) and a zero mean randomizing factor that introduces an incoherence effect. The soil parameters as fundamental frequency and damping coefficient are integrating by modeling the coherent component with the commonly used Kanai-Tajimi power spectral density. The parametric analysis of the model shows an increase of the coherency with the increase of (i) the apparent propagation velocity of the motions on the ground surface, and (ii) the correlation length. On the other hand, the coherency decrease with the increase of: (i) the frequency content of the motion, (ii) the separation distance between stations and (iii) the scattering parameter which is the randomizing factor standard deviation. Finally, in order to test the proposed model prediction, its coherency function is compared to empirical results obtained on the EPRI LSST array in Lotung, Taiwan (Abrahamson NA, Shneider JF, Stepp JC. Earthquake Spectra 1991; 7:1–28). The comparison shows that the proposed model fits the spatial variability of seismic motions on Lotung site. In the absence of spatially recorded seismic data on a site, the proposed analytical model can be utilised for the description of the spatial variability of the seismic motions for the seismic response analysis of structures with large dimensions as pipes, bridges, tunnels…etc.
