Relation between Hertz Range Artificial Pulsations and the Dynamics of the Auroral Electrojet: Experiment at the SPEAR Facility

We have analyzed the artificial pulsations detected in several cases in the hertz range in terms of the eastern electrojet dynamics. The pulsations were detected in 30% cases of pulse HF wave impact on the ionosphere during an experiment on modulated ionosphere heating at the Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) facility (Spitsbergen Archipelago) in November 2013. The pulsations occur when the polar edge of the eastern electrojet approaches the assumed region of influence on the ionosphere due to the northward drift of the electrojet or its extension with increased intensity. The pulsations vanish when the electrojet moves away from the influenced region, drifting southward. The beginning of pulsations is delayed by several minutes with respect to the starting of the HF transmitter. The pulsations are observed only in one of the horizontal components of the geomagnetic field at a distance of 50 km from the SPEAR facility, and they vanished at a distance of about 1300 km.

Stimulated electromagnetic emission polarization under different polarizations of pump waves

Abstract. The results of investigations into the stimulated electromagnetic emission (SEE) polarization under different modes of the pump wave polarization are presented. The present results were obtained in November 2012 during a heating campaign utilizing the SPEAR (Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar) heating facility, transmitting in both O- and X-mode polarization, and a PGI (Polar Geophysical Institute) radio interferometer capable of recording the polarization of the received radiation. The polarization ellipse parameters of the SEE DM (downshifted maximum) components were determined under both O-mode and X-mode polarization of the pump waves. The polarization direction of the SEE DM component was preserved under different polarizations of the pump waves. Different polarizations of the pump waves have a different SEE generation efficiency. The intensity of the DM component is observed to be greater during O-mode pumping. In addition, the numbers of observed SEE features are also greater during O-mode pumping.

First observations of SPEAR‐induced topside and bottomside sporadic E layer heating observed using the EISCAT Svalbard and SuperDARN radars

We present the first observations of heater‐induced simultaneous topside and bottomside sporadic E layer enhancements at very high latitudes (78.15°N) using the Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) heating facility and the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) Svalbard Radar. During the experiment the SPEAR heating facility was transmitting with O‐mode polarization in a field‐aligned direction with a constant effective radiated power of ∼16 MW. Results show distinct heater‐induced enhancements in both the ion and plasma line spectra. The plasma line enhancements are observed at the SPEAR heater frequency of 4.45 MHz. The plasma line observations represent the highest spatial resolution data (100 m) obtained of such heater‐induced enhancements and indicate simultaneous enhancements at both the topside and bottomside of the layer, respectively (located at ∼107.5 and 109 km altitude, respectively). It is postulated that the results represent evidence of O‐ to Z‐mode conversion of the heater wave occurring at the bottom of the E layer, allowing propagation through the layer resulting in simultaneous topside enhancements. The Z‐mode enhancements are observed outside the Spitze angle, which is thought to be a result of field‐aligned irregularities causing an increase in angular extent of the observations. Additional data from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) HF Finland radar are also shown, which indicate that upon a thinning of the sporadic E layer, the heater beam propagated into the F region, where it induced artificial field‐aligned irregularities.

An alternative estimation of the RF-enhanced plasma temperature during SPEAR artificial heating experiments: Early results

[1] RF heating of the F region plasma at high latitudes has long been known to produce electron temperature increases that can vary from tens to hundreds of percent above the background, unperturbed level. In contrast, artificial ionospheric modification experiments conducted using the Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) heating facility on Svalbard have often failed to produce obvious enhancements in the electron temperatures when measured using the European Incoherent Scatter Svalbard radar (ESR), colocated with the heater. Contamination of the ESR ion line spectra by the zero-frequency purely growing mode (PGM) feature is known to persist at varying amplitudes throughout SPEAR heating, and such spectral features can lead to significant temperature underestimations when the incoherent scatter spectra are analyzed using conventional methods. In this study, we present the first results of applying a recently developed technique to correct the PGM-contaminated spectra to SPEAR-enhanced ESR spectra and derive an alternative estimate of the SPEAR-heated electron temperature. We discuss how the effectiveness of the spectrum corrections can be affected by the data variance, estimated over the integration period. The subsequent electron temperatures, inferred from corrected spectra, range from a few tens to a few hundred Kelvin above the average background temperature. These temperatures are found to be in reasonable agreement with the theoretical “enhanced” temperature, calculated for the peak of the stationary temperature perturbation profile, when realistic absorption effects are accounted for.

Cluster spacecraft observations of a ULF wave enhanced by Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR)

Abstract. Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) is a high-latitude ionospheric heating facility capable of exciting ULF waves on local magnetic field lines. We examine an interval from 1 February 2006 when SPEAR was transmitting a 1 Hz modulation signal with a 10 min on-off cycle. Ground magnetometer data indicated that SPEAR modulated currents in the local ionosphere at 1 Hz, and enhanced a natural field line resonance with a 10 min period. During this interval the Cluster spacecraft passed over the heater site. Signatures of the SPEAR-enhanced field line resonance were present in the magnetic field data measured by the magnetometer on-board Cluster-2. These are the first joint ground- and space-based detections of field line tagging by SPEAR.

Aspect sensitive E- and F-region SPEAR-enhanced incoherent backscatter observed by the EISCAT Svalbard radar

Abstract. Previous studies of the aspect sensitivity of heater-enhanced incoherent radar backscatter in the high-latitude ionosphere have demonstrated the directional dependence of incoherent scatter signatures corresponding to artificially excited electrostatic waves, together with consistent field-aligned signatures that may be related to the presence of artificial field-aligned irregularities. These earlier high-latitude results have provided motivation for repeating the investigation in the different geophysical conditions that obtain in the polar cap ionosphere. The Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) facility is located within the polar cap and has provided observations of RF-enhanced ion and plasma line spectra recorded by the EISCAT Svalbard UHF incoherent scatter radar system (ESR), which is collocated with SPEAR. In this paper, we present observations of aspect sensitive E- and F-region SPEAR-induced ion and plasma line enhancements that indicate excitation of both the purely growing mode and the parametric decay instability, together with sporadic E-layer results that may indicate the presence of cavitons. We note consistent enhancements from field-aligned, vertical and also from 5° south of field-aligned. We attribute the prevalence of vertical scatter to the importance of the Spitze region, and of that from field-aligned to possible wave/irregularity coupling.

First observations of stimulated electromagnetic emission in the ionosphere modified by the spear heating facility on Spitsbergen

We present the first results of observations of the stimulated electromagnetic emission (SEE) in the ionosphere modified by the Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) heating facility. Observation of the SEE is the key method of ground-based diagnostics of the ionospheric plasma disturbances due to high-power HF radiation. The presented results were obtained during the heating campaign performed at the SPEAR facility in February–March 2007. Prominent SEE special features were observed in periods in which the critical frequency of the F 2 layer was higher than the pump-wave frequency (4.45 MHz). As an example, such special features as the downshifted maximum and the broad continuum in the region of negative detunings from the pump-wave frequency are presented. Observations clearly demonstrate that the ionosphere was efficiently excited by the SPEAR heating facility despite the comparatively low pump-wave power.

First results of a ULF wave injected on open field lines by Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR)

We present strong evidence that on 23 February 2007 between 2230 and 2330 UT the Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) system successfully modified the ionospheric electron density inside the northern polar cap. The modulated modification led to the generation of a small‐scale ultralow frequency (ULF) wave on open field lines which was detected by ground‐based magnetometers in the vicinity of the radar. It was not registered by magnetometer stations elsewhere inside the northern polar cap or at lower latitudes. The solar wind conditions are investigated, and although wave activity at the modulation frequency is present, it is shown that the local ULF wave is unlikely to originate from that activity.

EISCAT Svalbard radar observations of SPEAR-induced E- and F-region spectral enhancements in the polar cap ionosphere

Abstract. The Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) facility has successfully operated in the high-power heater and low-power radar modes and has returned its first results. The high-power results include observations of SPEAR-induced ion and plasma line spectral enhancements recorded by the EISCAT Svalbard UHF incoherent scatter radar system (ESR), which is collocated with SPEAR. These SPEAR-enhanced spectra possess features that are consistent with excitation of both the purely growing mode and the parametric decay instability. In this paper, we present observations of upper and lower E-region SPEAR-induced ion and plasma line enhancements, together with F-region spectral enhancements, which indicate excitation of both instabilities and which are consistent with previous theoretical treatments of instability excitation in sporadic E-layers. In agreement with previous observations, spectra from the lower E-region have the single-peaked form characteristic of collisional plasma. Our observations of the SPEAR-enhanced E-region spectra suggest the presence of variable drifting regions of patchy overdense plasma, which is a finding also consistent with previous results.

Investigation of natural and artificial stimulation of the ionospheric Alfvén resonator at high latitude

A brief review is provided of recent progress in understanding the ionospheric Alfvén resonator (IAR) at high latitude. Firstly, naturally occurring resonances of the IAR as detected by pulsation magnetometers in the auroral zone at Sodankylä and in the polar cap at Barentsburg are considered. The characteristics of the IAR in the two regions are broadly similar, although the effects of solar illumination are less clear at the higher latitudes. Secondly we review recent attempts to stimulate the IAR through high-power radio frequency experiments both in the auroral zone at Tromsø with the European Incoherent SCATter (EISCAT) heater, and within the polar cap at Longyearbyen with the Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) facility. In the auroral zone at, Tromsø the stimulated IAR has been observed by ground-based magnetometers, and through electron acceleration observed on the FAST spacecraft. At SPEAR in the polar cap, the stimulated IAR has been investigated, with ground magnetometers, with the first results indicative of a positive detection.

SPEAR: Early results from a very high latitude ionospheric heating facility

Early results are presented from high power ionospheric modification experiments with the SPEAR (Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar) HF facility, which is used to generate artificial field-aligned irregularities (AFAI) in the polar cap ionosphere. These AFAIs are detected both through HF coherent backscatter radar and bistatic HF Doppler experiments. The AFAIs created with SPEAR are demonstrated to provide an important geophysical diagnostic of the polar cap ionospheric electric field, and may also scatter radio waves out of the ionospheric waveguide, even when they have propagated over very considerable distances.

First results of artificial stimulation of the ionospheric Alfvén resonator at 78°N

[1] On 2 December 2005 a modulated X-mode ionospheric modification experiment was carried out using the Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) high power facility on Svalbard (78.15°N, 16.05°E), with the intention of artificially stimulating the Ionospheric Alfven Resonator (IAR). A modulation frequency of 3 Hz was superimposed on a 20 minute on/off cycle. Local ionograms showed an E region ionosphere of sufficient plasma density for the SPEAR beam to strongly interact with the low-altitude ionospheric plasma. The Barentsburg pulsation magnetometer monitored the resulting wave activity in the 0.5–5 Hz frequency range. Clear enhancements of the spectral power at 3 Hz were observed in the D component data, when SPEAR was transmitting and there was little natural Pc1 wave activity. During part of the interval, when high power substorm-associated Pc1 waves occurred, the polarisation of the artificially-stimulated wave rotated from the D to the H component.

First observations of SPEAR-induced artificial backscatter from CUTLASS and the EISCAT Svalbard radars

Abstract. Results are presented from the first two active experimental campaigns undertaken by the new SPEAR (Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar) high-power system that has recently become operational on Spitzbergen, in the Svalbard archipelago. SPEAR's high-power beam was used to excite artificial enhancements in the backscatter detected by the ESR (EISCAT Svalbard Radar) parallel to the geomagnetic field, as well as coherent backscatter detected by both of the CUTLASS (Co-operative UK Twin Located Auroral Sounding System) coherent radars, in directions orthogonal to the geomagnetic field. The ESR detected both enhanced ion-lines as well as enhanced plasma-lines, that were sustained for the whole period when SPEAR was transmitting ordinary mode radio waves, at frequencies below the maximum F-region plasma frequency. On a number of occasions, coherent backscatter was also observed in one or in both of the CUTLASS radars, in beams that intersected the heated volume. Although the levels of enhanced backscatter varied considerably in time, it appeared that ion-line, plasma-line and coherent backscatter were all excited simultaneously, in contrast to what has typically been reported at Tromsø, during EISCAT heater operations. A description of the technical and operational aspects of the new SPEAR system is also included.

Abstract. SPEAR is a new polar cap HF radar facility which is to be deployed on Svalbard. The principal capabilities of SPEAR will include the generation of artificial plasma irregularities, operation as an 'all-sky' HF radar, the excitation of ULF waves, and remote sounding of the magnetosphere. Operation of SPEAR in conjunction with the multitude of other instruments on Svalbard, including the EISCAT Svalbard radar, and the overlap of its extensive field-of-view with that of several of the HF radars in the SuperDARN network, will enable in-depth diagnosis of many geophysical and plasma phenomena associated with the cusp region and the substorm expansion phase. Moreover, its ability to produce artificial radar aurora will provide a means for the other instruments to undertake polar cap plasma physics experiments in a controlled manner. Another potential use of the facility is in 'field-line tagging' experiments, for coordinated ground-satellite experiments.
