AN ANALYSIS OF THE SITUATION OF CITIES BY THE METHODS OF CENTRAL-PLACE THEORY (with reference to the Estonian SSR)

Soviet geographers operate with the concept of the economic-geographic situation of places, reflecting the relationship between a given place and all economically significant outside factors. Attempts have been made to derive a measure of the economic-geographic situation, and the author proposes to use the methods of central-place theory for this purpose. He suggests a technique by which he proceeds from the idealized Christaller network to a transformed system of central places and then to a real-world system. He tests the technique by using the system of 50 central places in Estonia, a territory with a long tradition of urbanization. He also evaluates the situation of 16 Estonian urban places whose population is not growing or is actually declining and which have been designated as problem towns. The system of central places in Estonia is found to display good agreement with the predictions of the theory. Generations and Social Self-determination: A Study of Cohorts from 1948 to 1979 in the Estonian SSR

The younger generation's entry into the life of society is a complex social process. This process was studied in the Estonian SSR by sociologists at Tartu State University and the Estonian SSR's Institute of History (project director: M. Kh. Titma).

Smoking among schoolteachers in Estonia 1980.

In the autumn 1980 schoolteachers in the Estonian SSR received a questionnaire concerning smoking habits and attitudes to health risks related to smoking. Responses were received from 8 347 teachers (82% response rate). Of the 1 336 men studied, 40% were current smokers and 15% ex-smokers. Of the 7 011 women, 11% were current smokers and 4% ex-smokers. Among men in the age groups below 30, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and above 59 years the percentages of current smokers were 44, 44, 36, 38 and 45, respectively. For female schoolteachers the corresponding figures were 20, 15, 7, 6 and 2. There were no differences in the rates of smoking between Estonian (40% current smokers) and Russian (40%) men. Among Estonian females there were more current smokers (13%) than among Russian females (5%) studied. Of male schoolteachers who were current smokers, 92 smoked cigarettes only; among females this percentage was 99. Two percent of male and 15% of female cigarette smokers smoked a few cigarettes per month; the proportions of heavy smokers (20 or more cigarettes per day) were 10% and 1%, respectively. The belief that smoking is associated with coronary heart disease, lung cancer, chronic bronchitis and lung emphysema was more widespread among ex-smokers and non-smokers as compared with current smokers.

Parish Registers and Revisions: Research Strategies in Estonian Historical Demography and Agrarian History

Even when historians disagree profoundly over causation, periodization, and perhaps the ultimate purpose of historical inquiry, they may still be able to find common ground in the discussion of primary sources and of the appropriate methods of extracting from them accurate information about a vitally important but heretofore neglected dimension of past social life. Such an impression emerges when Heldur Palli‘s account of the historical demographic research at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR is placed in the context of Western inquiries into the history of European populations. The methodological adjustments required in the application of well-known demographic techniques to unusual data sources should be better understood when the Estonian researchers conclude their work of family reconstitution from multi-lingual evidence about a peasantry with highly unstable naming practices. Also, Coale and Anderson (1979) described how the demographic characteristics of the Baltic area (including Estonia) in the late nineteenth century distinguished it from Russia proper, thus raising the question of when, in the distant past, these characteristics first appeared and how they can be described quantitatively before the first modern Baltic census of 1881. The sources being used by Palli and his colleagues no doubt will contain at least the beginnings of a concrete answer to these questions. Furthermore, the research by Peter Laslett and others on a regionalized model of premodern European household structure has suggested that the Baltic area stands somewhere between the West—with its high proportion of simple family households—and Russia—with its impressively high incidence of multiple family structures, a proposition which the cadastral revisions and fiscal censuses of Estonia should help to refine. There are also the questions of population turnover and social mobility, to which the frequent enumerations of the Estonian population ought to bring considerable quantitative evidence illustrating Eastern European patterns. Finally, Estonian peasants, like many other peasantries in the centuries discussed by Palli, were serfs; but, unlike all but a very few peasantries elsewhere, the Estonian population continued to be precisely enumerated by state authorities even after the abolition of serfdom in 1816-1819. The availability of detailed household-level data before and after legal emancipation will be of interest to Western scholars who have had to deal with the social structural consequences of emancipatory measures among servile agricultural populations in their own societies.

Further Development of the Didactic Legacy of J. Käis in Soviet Estonia

The pedagogical legacy of J. Kais (1885-1950) (1) has attracted the attention of many pedagogues in Soviet Estonia in recent decades. His ideas have been studied and applied in school practice. In the fifth number of the Estonian language serial of articles Soviet Pedagogy and the School [Nôukogude pedagoogika ja kool], members of the history of pedagogy section, teachers and researchers working under the supervision of Associate Professor A. J. Elango, presented a survey and Marxist evaluation of the activity of J. Käis and his most important pedagogical ideas. However, the reception of the ideas of J. Käis in the pedagogy of Soviet Estonia has not yet been studied. The purpose of the present article is to present a brief survey of J. Käis's basic didactic principles as they have undergone further development in the didactics of Soviet Estonia. We do not deal with the problem of elementary education.

Introduction Experiments with various affinity and photo-affinity analogues of tRNA have revealed its proximity to a number of ribosomal proteins (reviews [1-3]). More recently, UV-induced in situ crosslinking of tRNA has allowed the establistunent of a group of proteins in the close vicinity of tRNA [4,5]. Direct evidence for the interaction of ribosomal proteins with tRNA was obtained by affinity chromatography of ribosomal proteins on immobilized tRNA [6-10]. The complex of 50 S subunit proteins with tRNA, covalently bound to the epoxy-activated Sepharose is described in [9] and consists of proteins L2, L15, L16, L17, L18, L22, L33 and L34. We have been able to show that this tRNA-pro- tein complex binds another molecule of tRNA and, independently from the latter, a molecule of 5 S RNA [11]. Here we show that two 50 S ribosomal subunit proteins, L2 and L17, bind directly to the immobilized tRNA. Neither of these proteins in sepa- rate dfineric complex with tRNA form a binding site for the second tRNA. However, these two proteins, when taken together, form a complex with immobilized tRNA which possesses a binding site for the second molecule of tRNA. 2. Experimental Escherichia coli tRNA was isolated from MRE600 strain, purified on a Sephadex G-100 column (5 × 90 cm) and its purity was checked by urea- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis according to [12]. * To whom correspondence should be addressed E. coli 3zp-labelled tRNA was isolated from MRE600 strain, grown on low-phosphate medium containing a/p orthophosphoric acid [ 13]. Hot phenol-SDS- extracted RNAs [ 14] were fractionated by polyacryl- anfide gel electrophoresis [12], eluted from the gel [ 15] and reprecipitated 3 times with alcohol. E. coli 50 S ribosomal subunits were prepared according to [16]. In the isolation and fractionation of 50 S ribo- somal subunit proteins we followed the procedure in [ 17], modified by pre-fractionation of 50 S subunit proteins on a preparative tRNA-Sepharose gel column followed by Sephadex gel fdtration and CM-cellulose chromatography at neutral pH. Details of the proce- dure will be published elsewhere. Individual proteins were identified by two-dimensional polyacrylamide [ 18] and SDS- 15% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis [191. The binding of the individual proteins, protein mixtures, and 32p4abelled deacylated tRNA to the tRNA-Sepharose gel (53 A260 units/ml) was carried out in 10 mM Tris-HC1 binding buffer (BB) (pH 7.5) containing 10 mM MgClz, 100 mM KC1 and 6 mM 2-mercaptoethanol at 4°C. Proteins were loaded onto 0.5 ml tRNA-Sepharose gel column at ~10 -6 M. The column was washed with 10 column vol. BB, and t[32p]RNA was loaded onto it at 2 × 10 -s M. After that the afffmity column was again washed with BB, until there was no radioactivity in the eluate (about 10 column vol.) and the bound t [32p]RNA with pro- teins were finally eluted with an elution buffer (EB) containing 1 M KC1 and 10 mM EDTA. Radioactivity was measured in an LKB Ultrobeta 1210 scintillation spectrometer with an efficiency of ~40% on 3H-chan- nel for 32P-induced ~erenkov radiation. Ages are calculated using the half-life of 5568 ± 30 years and 0.95 NBS oxalic acid modern standard with ad 1950 as reference year.
