Dust dynamics: distribution patterns of semi-volatile organic chemicals across particle sizes in varied indoor microenvironments.

An extensive analysis of the distribution patterns of three distinct classes of semi-volatile organic chemicals (SVOCs)-phthalates (PAEs), organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-across four distinct size fractions of dust (25, 50, 100, and 200μm) was conducted. The dust samples were sourced from AC filter, covered car parking lots, households, hotels, mosques, and car floors. To generate the four fractions, ten dust samples from each microenvironment were pooled and sieved utilizing sieving apparatus with the appropriate mesh size. Selected SVOCs were quantified utilizing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in electron impact (EI) mode. Results unveiled diverse contamination levels among dust fractions, showcasing car parking lot dust with the lowest chemical contamination, while car floor dust displayed the highest levels of PAHs and OPFRs, peaking at 28.3µg/g and 43.2µg/g, respectively. In contrast, mosque and household floor dust exhibited the highest concentrations of phthalates, with values of 985µg/g and 846µg/g, respectively. Across the analyzed microenvironments, we observed a trend where concentrations of SVOCs tended to rise as dust particles decreased in size, forming a visually striking pattern. This phenomenon was particularly pronounced in dust samples collected from car floors and parking lots. Among SVOCs, PAEs emerged as the predominant contributors with > 90% followed by OPFRs and PAHs. The high levels of OPFRs in car floor dust align logically with the fact that numerous interior components of cars are treated with OPFRs, within a compact indoor microenvironment, to comply to fire safety regulations. Furthermore, petroleum products are a major source of PAHs in the environment and all the sampled cars in the study had combustion engines. Consequently, car dust is more likely to be polluted with PAHs stemming from petroleum combustion. Although previous investigations have noted an increase in heavy metals and brominated flame retardants with decreasing dust particles, this is the first study analyzing these SVOCs in different fractions of dust from various microenvironments. However, aside from two specific microenvironments, the observed pattern of escalating SVOC concentrations with smaller dust particle sizes was not corroborated among the examined microenvironments. This divergence in concentration trends suggests the potential involvement of supplementary variables in influencing SVOC distributions within dust particles.

[Characteristics, Sources Apportionment, and Health Risks of PM2.5-bound PAHs and Their Derivatives Before and After Heating in Zibo City].

Atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives are a global problem that influences the environment and threatens human health. To investigate the characteristics, sources, and health risk assessment of PM2.5-bound PAHs and their derivatives, PM2.5 were collected at an urban site in Zibo from November 5 to December 26, 2020, and the concentrations of 16 conventional PAHs, nine NPAHs, and five OPAHs in PM2.5 were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Source apportionment of PAHs and their derivatives was conducted using diagnostic ratios and a PMF model, and the health risks of PAHs and their derivatives to adult men and women were evaluated using the source-dependent incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model. The results showed that the average concentrations of ∑16pPAHs, ∑9NPAHs, and ∑5OPAHs in PM2.5 of Zibo City during the sampling period were (41.61 ± 13.40), (6.38 ± 5.70), and (53.20 ± 53.47) ng·m-3, respectively. The concentrations of the three PAHs increased significantly after heating, which were 1.31, 2.04, and 5.24 times larger than those before heating. During the sampling period, Chr, BaP, and BaA were the dominant components of pPAHs; 9N-Ant and 2N-Flt + 3N-Flt were the dominant components of NPAHs; and ATQ and BZO were the dominant components of OPAHs. Source apportionment results showed that motor vehicles were the main source of PAHs and their derivatives in PM2.5 before heating, whereas after heating, the main sources were the mixed source of coal and biomass combustion and secondary formation. The total BaP equivalent (TEQ) was 14.5 ng·m-3 during the sampling period, and the TEQ increased significantly after heating, which was approximately 1.2 times of that before heating. Assisted by the individual PAH source apportionment results, the ILCR of PM2.5-boundPAHs and NPAHs in Zibo City had a certain potential carcinogenic risk for adult males (1.06 × 10-5) and females (9.32 × 10-6). Among them, the health risks of PAHs from gasoline vehicles, diesel vehicles, and coal/biomass combustion were significantly higher than those from other emission sources.

Assessing the effect of COVID 19 lockdowns on the composition of organic compounds and potential source of PM2.5 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The ambient air quality during COVID-19 lockdowns has been improved in many cities in the world. This study is to assess the changes in persistent organic pollutants in PM2.5 during the COVID-19 lockdown in Hanoi. Individual organic species in PM2.5 ((e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)) were measured in an urban residential area in Hanoi from before the March 10th to April 22nd, 2020, including before the partial lockdown (BL) and the partial lockdown (PL) phases. During the PL phase, the concentration of Σ14PAHs and Σ28PCBs was reduced by 38 and 52% compared with the BL period, respectively. The diagnostic ratio method implied that the sources of PAHs within the PL phase had a less effect on traffic and industrial activities than in the BL phase. The characteristic ratio method indicated that PCBs were mixed by commercial product and combustion process in both the BL and the PL periods, however, the source of PCBs in the BL phase was influenced by municipal waste incineration more than those in the PL phase. The decreasing concentration of Σ20OCPs during the partial lockdown was attributed to the restriction of human activities during the quarantine period. The results suggested that the source of OCPs was probably derived from the usage of pesticides in current and, historical degradation or the transportation of pesticides from the soil to the atmosphere.

Spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water and sediment in the Ganga River: source diagnostics and health risk assessment on dietary exposure through a common carp fish Labeo rohita.

We evaluated spatial distribution and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and sediments at four selected sites of the Ganga River. Also, we measured PAHs in muscle tissues of Rohu (Labeo rohita), the most common edible carp fish of the Ganga River and potential human health risk was addressed. Total concentration of PAHs (∑PAHs) in water was highest at Manika Site (1470.5ng/L) followed by Knuj (630.0ng/L) and lowest at Adpr (219.0ng/L). A similar trend was observed for sediments with highest concentration of ∑PAHs at Manika (461.8ng/g) and lowest at Adpr Site (94.59ng/g). Among PAHs, phenanthrene (Phe) showed highest concentration in both water and sediment. Of the eight major carcinogenic contributors (∑PAH8C), Indeno (1,2,3-C,D) pyrene (InP) did appear the most dominant component accounting for 42% to this group at Manika Site. Isomer ratios indicated vehicular emission and biomass combustion as major sources of PAHs. The ∑PAHs concentrations in fish tissue ranged from 117.8 to 758.0ng/g (fresh weight basis) where low molecular weight PAHs assumed predominance (above 80%). The risk level in fish tissues appeared highest at Manika Site and site-wise differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The ILCR (> 10-4) indicated carcinogenic risk in adults and children associated with BaP and DBahA at Manika Site and with BaP at Knuj Site. Overall, the concentrations exceeding permissible limit, carcinogenic potential and BaP equivalent all indicated carcinogenic risks associated with some individual PAHs. This merits attention because the Ganga River is a reservoir of fisheries.

Identification and health risk evaluation of soil contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at shale gas extraction sites based on positive matrix factorization

The impact of shale gas extraction on surrounding environmental media remains unclear. In this study, the current state of contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are high-frequency contaminants of shale gas, was investigated in the soil surrounding emerging shale gas development sites. The source analysis of PAHs was conducted in the soils of shale gas extraction sites using positive matrix factorization (PMF). The health risk assessment (HRA) was calculated for ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation exposures, and the priority sources of PAHs in the soil were jointly identified by PMF and HRA to refine the contribution level of different individual PAHs to the carcinogenic risk. The results showed that both Sichuan and Chongqing mining site soils were contaminated to different degrees. Shale gas extraction has an impact on the surrounding soil, and the highest contributing source of PAHs in the mining site soil of Sichuan was anthropogenic activity, accounting for 31.6%, whereas that in the mining site soil of Chongqing was biomass combustion and mixed automobile combustion, accounting for 35.9%. At the two mining sites in Sichuan and Chongqing, none of the three exposure pathways (ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation) posed a carcinogenic risk to children, whereas the dermal exposure pathway posed a carcinogenic risk to adults. Health risk assessments based on specific source assignments indicate that when managing soil pollution, the control of fossil fuel combustion and vehicular emissions should be prioritized.

Variations of source-specific risks for inhalable particles-bound PAHs during long-term air pollution controls in a Chinese megacity: impact of gas/particle partitioning

Gas/particle (G/P) partitioning is a determining factor that drives the behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere. To comprehend the variations and impacts of PAHs G/P partitioning on inhalation risks from different sources, atmospheric PAHs in Chengdu were studied from January 2009 to January 2021. Chengdu's air quality demonstrated improvement, with a noticeable decline in PM10 (from 238 to 103 μg·m-3), PM10-bound PAHs mass concentrations (from 0.08 to 0.01 μg·m-3), as well as PAHs inhalation non-cancer (from 63.5 to 7.1) and cancer risks (from 6.2 × 10−5 to 7.7 × 10−6). Decreasing trends were also observed in the concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and the values of absorptive G/P partitioning coefficient (Kp, OM) from 2009 to 2020, indicating a slight decrease in the PM absorptive capacity. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) model utilized three distinct datasets: PMFpp (particle-phase PAHs only), PMFtot (total PAHs concentrations), and PMFpp/gas (particle-phase in parallel with gas-phase PAHs). PMFpp and PMFpp/gas provide reasonable source apportionment and source-specific risk results. However, daily variations in source contributions of PMFtot were found to be unreasonable. PMFpp/gas and PMFtot could identify a source of low molecular weight PAHs (LPAHs) related to temperature, and a significantly positive correlation between LPAHs and temperature was discovered. Gas/particle partitioning of PAHs showed a notable impact on source-specific risks associated with coal and biomass combustion (CC&BC). The findings contribute to our understanding of the variation in PAHs G/P partitioning and the PM absorptive capacity resulting from effective air pollution control in China. Additionally, they offer prerequisite information for incorporating semi-volatile organic compounds in source apportionment and source-specific risk assessment.

Occurrence and characteristics of PAHs in coastal seawater off the city of Samsun on the Black Sea coast of Turkey

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations in seawater were monitored seasonally along the Samsun coast, Turkey, between August 2019 and May 2020 to elucidate main origin, seasonal variations, and risk pathways of PAHs. Total PAH concentrations in surface seawater ranged from 24.86 to 477.78 ng L−1 (mean 138.90, SD 62.22 ng L−1), with relatively higher levels in summer and autumn seasons. Combustion products were the major sources of PAHs. The increased PAH levels during the summer period may have resulted from the more intense industrial and agricultural activities. The highest proportion of PAHs were 3- and 2-ringed, accounting for 39.23 % and 26.50 % of ΣPAHs, respectively, and their derivatives Nap and Phe predominated in individual PAHs. While RQ values of ∑PAHs showed low ecological risk, RQMPCs of BpF and BaA in autumn and BpF in summer were at high ecological risk.

Occurrence, removal, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives in typical wastewater treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have a certain removal capacity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, but some of them are discharged with effluent into the environment, which can affect the environment. Therefore, to understand the presence, sources, and potential risks of PAHs and their derivatives in WWTPs. Sixteen PAHs, three chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs), three oxidized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs), and three methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MPAHs) were detected in the influent and effluent water of three WWTPs in China. The average concentrations of their influent ∑PAHs, ∑ClPAHs, ∑OPAHs, and ∑MPAHs ranged from 2682.50 to 2774.53 ng/L, 553.26–906.28 ng/L, 415.40–731.56 ng/L, and 534.04–969.83 ng/L, respectively, and the effluent concentrations ranged from 823.28 to 993.37 ng/L, 269.43–489.94 ng/L, 285.93–463.55 ng/L, and 376.25–512.34 ng/L, respectively. The growth of heat transport and industrial energy consumption in the region has a significant impact on the level of PAHs in WWTPs. According to the calculated removal efficiencies of PAHs and their derivatives in the three WWTPs (A, B, and C), the removal rates of PAHs and their derivatives were 69–72%, 62–71%, and 68–73%, respectively, and for the substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SPAHs), the removal rates were 41–49%, 31–40%, and 33–39%, respectively; moreover, the removal rates of PAHs were greater than those of SPAHs in the WWTPs. The results obtained via the ratio method indicated that the main sources of PAHs in the influent of WWTPs were the combustion of coal and biomass, and petroleum contamination was the secondary source. In risk evaluation, there were 5 compounds for which the risk quotient was considered high ecological risk. During chronic disease evaluation, there were 11 compounds with a risk quotient considered to indicate high risk. PAHs and SPAHs with high relative molecular masses in the effluent of WWTPs pose more serious environmental hazards than their PAHs counterparts.

Biomonitoring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon levels in domestic kitchens using commonly grown culinary herbs

AbstractCooking is a significant source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) emissions in indoor environments. A one-month biomonitoring study was carried out in previously selected rural Hungarian kitchens to evaluate cooking-related PAHs concentrations in 4 common kitchen vegetables such as basil, parsley, rocket and chives. The study had two mainobjectives: firstly, to follow PAHs accumulation pattern and to find out if this pattern can be associated with different cooking habits. Also, the usefulness of culinary herbs for indoor bioaccumulation studies was assessed. The 2-ring naphthalene was the dominant PAH in the majority of the samples, its concentrations were in the range of 25.4 µg/kg and 274 µg/kg, of 3-ring PAHs the prevalency of phenanthrene was observed, with highest concentration of 62 µg/kg. PAHs accumulation pattern in tested plants clearly indicated differences in cooking methods and cooking oils used in the selected households. Use of lard and animal fats in general resulted in the high concentrations of higher molecular weight (5- and 6-ring) PAHs, while olive oil usage could be associated with the emission of 2- and 3-ring PAHs. Culinary herbs, however, accumulated carcinogenic PAHs such as benzo[a]anthracene (highest concentration 11.9 µg/kg), benzo[b]fluoranthene (highest concentration 13.8 µg/kg) and chrysene (highest concentration 20.1 µg/kg) which might question their safe use.

A comprehensive examination of temporal-seasonal variations of PM1.0 and PM2.5 in taiwan before and during the COVID-19 lockdown.

COVID-19 has been a significant global concern due to its contagious nature. In May 2021, Taiwan experienced a severe outbreak, leading the government to enforce strict Pandemic Alert Level 3 restrictions in order to curtail its spread. Although previous studies in Taiwan have examined the effects of these measures on air quality, further research is required to compare different time periods and assess the health implications of reducing particulate matter during the Level 3 lockdown. Herein, we analyzed the mass concentrations, chemical compositions, seasonal variations, sources, and potential health risks of PM1.0 and PM2.5 in Central Taiwan before and during the Level 3 lockdown. As a result, coal-fired boilers (47%) and traffic emissions (53%) were identified as the predominant sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM1.0, while in PM2.5, the dominant sources of PAHs were coal-fired boilers (28%), traffic emissions (50%), and iron and steel sinter plants (22.1%). Before the pandemic, a greater value of 20.9 ± 6.92 μg/m3 was observed for PM2.5, which decreased to 15.3 ± 2.51 μg/m3 during the pandemic due to a reduction in industrial and anthropogenic emissions. Additionally, prior to the pandemic, PM1.0 had a contribution rate of 79% to PM2.5, which changed to 89% during the pandemic. Similarly, BaPeq values in PM2.5 exhibited a comparable trend, with PM1.0 contributing 86% and 65% respectively. In both periods, the OC/EC ratios for PM1.0 and PM2.5 were above 2, due to secondary organic compounds. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of PAHs in PM2.5 decreased by 4.03 × 10-5 during the pandemic, with PM1.0 contributing 73% due to reduced anthropogenic activities.

Seasonal variation, source identification, and health risk assessment of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Ulsan, South Korea

Gaseous and particulate 21 PAHs were monitored at a residential site in Ulsan, South Korea, over three seasons (December 2013–August 2014). The mean concentrations of Σ21 PAHs were highest in winter (16.2 ± 8.2 ng/m3), followed by spring (8.37 ± 4.53 ng/m3) and summer (6.23 ± 2.53 ng/m3). The mean gaseous concentration of Σ21 PAHs (7.39 ± 4.39 ng/m3) was 2.7 times higher than that of particulate PAHs (2.70 ± 3.38 ng/m3). To identify the sources of PAHs (both types of sources and their areas), diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis, and concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) were used. The results showed that pyrogenic sources (e.g., coal combustion) were the primary emission sources of PAHs in winter and spring. In summer, the influence of both coal and heavy oil combustion was dominant, suggesting that PAHs could be transported from industrial areas of Ulsan (e.g., petrochemical and nonferrous industrial complexes) by seasonal winds. Regarding emission source areas, the CWT analysis revealed that in winter and spring, PAHs in Ulsan could be attributed to emissions from regional areas, e.g., China and North Korea. The PAH concentrations were also used to assess the health risks associated with the inhalation of these compounds for adults aged 18–70. The results showed that the cancer risks from Σ19 PAHs and Σ13 PAHs did not exceed the guideline set by the US EPA (10−6), indicating no cancer risks for this target group. However, it is worth noting that certain PAHs, which are not listed as priority PAHs by the US EPA, make significant contributions to the benzo[a]pyrene equivalent and the associated cancer risks. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate not only the priority PAHs but also other PAH species to fully evaluate their effect on human health.

Risk Assessments of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Surface Sediments of Drinking Water Sources in Ifite Ogwari, South-East Nigeria

ABSTRACT Surface water is the main source of drinking water in Ifite Ogwari, Anambra State, South-East Nigeria. In aquatic environments, sediment functions as both a source and a sink of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). To determine the level of pollution, health concerns to people and the environment, and potential sources of PAHs in the surface water sediments in Ifite Ogwari, sediment samples were collected from 9 surface water sources used for drinking by Ifite Ogwari people and were analyzed using a Gas Chromatography/Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID). In all sediment samples, only 11 PAHs out of 16 United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) priority PAHs were detected while 5 were below detectable limits. The concentration of benzo[a]anthracene was high but detected in only 2 sediment samples while fluoranthene has a relatively close concentration across all samples. Benzo[k]fluoranthene has the highest concentration compared to other PAHs in the samples while benzo[a]pyrene has the lowest concentration across all samples. Atammele sediment was analyzed as the most carcinogenic followed by Isiachala with concentrations of 84.23 ng/µL and 51.92 ng/µL respectively. Ube stream sediment has the lowest concentration of PAHs (11.74 ng/µL). Ecological risk of the PAHs revealed a sediment-to-sediment variation in the risk profile. Human health risk assessment depicts that hazard index and total cancer risk for adults and children ranged from 2.3E-07 - 2.57E-05 and 4.85E-07 - 5.43E-05 respectively. Pyrogenic activities are the main source of PAHs in the sediments. The results provide a guide for monitoring PAHs pollution and protecting drinking water sources.

Spatiotemporal distribution, sources, and ecological risk of soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Chinese urban agglomerations from 2000 to 2020

To investigate the spatial and temporal distribution, sources, and ecological risk of soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in China’s urban agglomerations from 2000 to 2020, a comprehensive search strategy was employed using the keywords “soil”, “PAHs”, and “city”. A total of 122 relevant studies that provided information on individual PAH content during the specified time period were collected. These studies encompassed 20 urban agglomerations in China, which were further categorized into two distinct periods: 2000 to 2010 and 2011 to 2020. The diagnostic ratio method and principal component analysis were employed to identify the sources of PAHs, and a risk quotient model was used to evaluate the soil ecological risk. The results revealed the average PAH content in the 20 urban agglomerations in China from 2011 to 2020 was 2,439 ± 4,633 ng·g-1, which exceeded the severe pollution level cut-off (&amp;gt; 1,000 ng·g-1). The soil PAH content in the period from 2011 to 2020 decreased by 28% compared to the soil PAH content in the period from 2000 to 2010. Soil PAH pollution was more severe in the northern urban agglomerations than in the southern urban agglomerations. Diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis demonstrated that the principal sources in most urban agglomerations in China were traffic and coal combustion. GeoDetector found that coal and fuel oil consumption were the main factors affecting the spatial differentiation of PAHs. The ecological risk quotient showed that approximately 80% of the urban agglomerations were at a medium-high ecological risk from 2000 to 2010, compared with 72% from 2011 to 2020. Thus, it is necessary to deepen energy structure reform to alleviate the threat of serious pollution caused by coal and fuel oil in urban agglomerations.

Analysis and Assessment of Contamination Degree and Emission Sources of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs and Me-PAHs) in Surface Sediments from Central Coast of Vietnam

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)  and their derivatives are a diverse group of organic pollutants, which are relatively persistent and toxic. Simultaneous determination of unsubstituted PAHs and methylated PAHs (Me-PAHs) is necessary to provide comprehensive insights into contamination levels and sources of these pollutants. In this study, we collected surface sediment samples in Vietnamese central coast to analyze 7 PAHs and 12 Me-PAHs. The sediment samples were extracted by using a focused ultrasonic processor with acetone/hexane (1:1) mixture and toluene. The extract was purified by column chromatography technique with activated silica gel and dichloromethane/hexane (1:3) as elution solvent. PAHs and Me-PAHs were determined by a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system operated in electron impact ionization (EI) and selected ion monitoring mode (SIM). Concentrations of total 7 PAHs and 12 Me-PAHs ranged from 30 to 246 (average 92) nanograms per gram sediment (ng/g). These levels were comparable to or lower than those measured in Vietnamese river sediments and marine sediments from some other countries in the world. The accumulation profiles of PAHs and Me-PAHs indicated that their emissions are likely associated with mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. Our results have provided preliminary information about the pollution degree and accumulation characteristics of these substances in Vietnamese marine environments. Additional comprehensive studies should be performed to characterize contamination characterisrics, emission sources, and ecological risks of PAHs and their derivatives in this country.

Temporal and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Danube River in Hungary

The Danube is a significant transboundary river on a global scale, with several tributaries. The effluents from industrial operations and wastewater treatment plants have an impact on the river's aquatic ecosystem. These discharges provide a significant threat to aquatic life by deteriorating the quality of water and sediment. Hence, a total of 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) compounds were analyzed at six locations along the river, covering a period of 12 months. The objective was to explore the temporal and spatial fluctuations of these chemicals in both water and sediment. The study revealed a significant fluctuation in the concentration of PAHs in water throughout the year, with levels ranging from 224.8 ng/L during the summer to 365.8 ng/L during the winter. Similarly, the concentration of PAHs in sediment samples varied from 316.7 ng/g in dry weight during the summer to 422.9 ng/g in dry weight during the winter. According to the Europe Drinking Water Directive, the levels of PAHs exceeded the permitted limit of 100 ng/L, resulting in a 124.8% rise in summer and a 265.8% increase in winter. The results suggest that the potential human-caused sources of PAHs were mostly derived from pyrolytic and pyrogenic processes, with pyrogenic sources being more dominant. Assessment of sediment quality standards (SQGs) showed that the levels of PAHs in sediments were below the Effect Range Low (ERL), except for acenaphthylene (Acy) and fluorene (Fl) concentrations. This suggests that there could be occasional biological consequences. The cumulative Individual Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) exceeds 1/104 for both adults and children in all sites.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives in soil from Yellow River Delta: Distribution, source apportionment, and risk assessment

The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) in surface soils from the petroleum industrial area of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) in China were investigated. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 19.6 to 1560 ng/g, while 22 HPAHs ranged from 2.44 to 14.9 ng/g. Moreover, a high degree of spatial distribution heterogeneity was observed for both PAHs and HPAHs, which is likely attributed to the distinct industrial activities in studied area. The combustion of biomass and petroleum were identified as primary sources of soil PAHs and HPAHs in the YRD. Furthermore, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene exhibited high ecological risks (with risk quotients of 1.47, 1.44, and 1.02, respectively) in specific sites within the YRD. Considering the high toxicity of HPAHs and their potential joint environmental effects with PAHs, continuous attention should be directed towards the environmental risks associated with both PAHs and HPAHs.

Ecological Risk Assessment, Distribution and Source of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Soil of Urban and Suburban Forest Areas of Southern Poland

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread environmental pollutants that can pose a risk to people living near contaminated soils. The role of forest ecosystems around urban agglomerations as a draw to urban dwellers has been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic led us to focus this study on the soils beneath forested areas around urban agglomerations, with the aim of assessing the sources and ecological risk of PAHs in the soils. For the study, a 150 km transect was delineated by six sampling sites, located in urban and commercial forests, which were characterised by the same species composition. Samples were taken from the 0–10 cm depth horizon, after removal of the organic layer. The content of 16 PAHs was determined, from which the potential source of contamination, the toxic equivalent quotient (TEQ), the potential ecological risk quotient (RQ) and the incremental lifetime cancer risk quotient (ILCR) were calculated. The mean sums of the PAHs ranged from 12.41 to 52.76 μg·kg−1. Our analysis indicated that the share of pollutants in the soils had resulted from industrial combustion, biomass and coal combustion, and traffic. The RQ of the PAHs in the soils of the Upper Silesian Industrial Region, or within its impact range, were found to be low to moderate. High ILCR ratios for children (1.9 × 10−4) and adults (8.38 × 10−5) were recorded in soils related to a refinery. Our findings confirm that forests around urban areas are vulnerable to pollution. People living in cities should consider spending their leisure time in forest areas at a distance from their homes. Systematic and continuous monitoring of PAHs is necessary to ensure that human safety is guaranteed.

Characterization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in mangrove sediments from Ifiekporo Creek, Warri, Nigeria

The occurrence and level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove sediment from Ifiekporo Creek in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria, were assessed in this study. The extraction of PAHs from the sediment samples was achieved using the PAH analytical test method (USEPA 8270). This method measures the individual concentrations of extractable PAHs in samples. The PAHs were quantified within the C11-C22 subgroup. The basic GC parameters for the analysis of polyaromatic hydrocarbons were analysed using a gas chromatography‒mass selective detector (GC‒MSD). The individual PAH concentrations in the mangrove sediment samples ranged from 850 µg/kg−1 to 3470 µg/kg−1. PAH source apportionment employing isomeric ratios and multivariate statistics indicated both pyrogenic and petrogenic source inputs in the sediment samples. The order of PAH homology in the sediment was 3-ring > 2-ring > 4-ring. The sediment samples were mostly dominated by LMW PAHs. The results of the ecological risk assessment in the study area indicate that there is low ecological risk associated with PAH exposure in sediment. These results provide data on the concentrations and compositional patterns of PAHs, which is useful for understanding the effects, sources, fates, and transport of PAHs in sediment in the study area, as well as for providing relevant information for environmental quality management and forensic studies.

Sources, gas-particle distribution and health risks of atmospheric PAHs in two typical basin cities in China

The sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere of various cities are highly intricate. Conducting research on the pollution characteristics of different types of PAHs in cities will help to focus on solving air pollution problems based on urban characteristics. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the PM2.5-bound state and gas-phase were analyzed in the winter atmosphere of Yuncheng and Nanyang, China, to determine their pollution and spatial characteristics. The results revealed that in Yuncheng, the average concentrations of these 16 PAHs were 129.83 ± 96.63 ng m−3 in the PM2.5-bound form and 168.05 ± 88.64 ng m−3 in the gas phase, surpassing those observed in Nanyang, where the averages were 66.53 ± 32.49 ng m−3 and 112.80 ± 65.90 ng m−3 for particulate and gas phases, respectively. Gaseous samples primarily contained low molecular weight PAHs, while medium and high molecular weight PAHs were more prevalent in particulate samples. The linear relationship between the gas-particle partition coefficient (logKP) and the gas partition coefficient (PL0) and KOA value of PAHs in both cities suggested that during winter, PAHs in Yuncheng and Nanyang predominantly adsorb onto particles, failing to achieve gas-particle equilibrium. Source analysis using positive matrix factorization (PMF) identified coal combustion (26.4%–41.9%), biomass combustion (26.3%–29.6%), motor vehicle emissions (16.3%–30.4%), and evaporation sources (15.8%–26.9%) as the primary sources of atmospheric PAHs in both cities. Potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analyses indicated that pollutants originating from the northwest direction and near-earth air masses exerted a substantial influence on both cities. According to health risk assessments, both Yuncheng City and Nanyang City exhibited a certain risk of cancer due to atmospheric PAH exposure. However, the risk of cancer was higher in Yuncheng City compared to Nanyang City. The research results uncover the pollution characteristics and primary sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different types of urban air. It emphasizes the substantial contribution of local pollution sources to atmospheric PAHs and emphasizes the necessity of prioritizing control measures.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) evidence for frequent combustion events on land during the Permian–Triassic transition in Northwest China

The Siberian Traps large igneous province and intensive continental arc volcanism are regarded as the primary drivers of the severe environmental changes that triggered the end-Permian mass extinction. However, detailed correlations between volcanism and the collapse of terrestrial ecosystems remain ambiguous. This study used polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) records and mercury spikes from the terrestrial Dalongkou section as refined proxies for volcanic combustion events. The mercury anomalies, PAH concentrations, and PAH ratios provide insight into the terrestrial ecosystem collapse during the Permian–Triassic (P–T) transition. Based on the multiple PAH ratios, the source and composition of PAHs exhibit obvious pyrolytic-derived origins during the late Permian. Combined with the biostratigraphic records and our PAH proxies in the Dalongkou section, terrestrial ecosystems experienced stepwise crisis and change owing to volcanic effects and frequent high-temperature combustion events during the P–T transition. During the main terrestrial P–T crisis interval, the increased PAH concentrations indicate that the combustion events were gradually enhanced under worse climatic conditions. Based on the PAH records, enhanced soil erosion accompanied by frequent wildfires was found to occur under extremely high-temperature climatic conditions caused by intensive volcanic activity during the P–T transition.
