Vynnyky—Lysivka, district Lviv. Comparison of the results of archaeological and geomagnetic research

Archaeological research in 2023 at the Vynnyky-Lysivka site provided the basis for interpreting the results of geomagnetic work carried out in 2017. The excavations in 2016 resulted in the discovery of clusters of fired clay daub fragments, constituting the remains of the Funnel Beaker Culture household. It was assumed that noninvasive research would show the locations of other such features. However, the results of geomagnetic surveys were difficult to interpret- just like in Gordineşti II-Stînca goală. In the course of the investigation, numerous anomalies were identified, mainly of a dipole nature and less numerous point-positive anomalies. A very weak source of anomalies turned out to be a clearly visible Eneolithic ditch cutting of the Funnel Beaker Culture settlement. The discovery in 2023 in the central part of the Vynnyky-Lysivka settlement of a cluster of pits in the place where anomalies were distinguished in non-invasive studies provided the basis for a reinterpretation of geomagnetic surveys.

Petrophysical cobalt exploration indicators in Kuusamo, northern Finland

The increasing global demand for cobalt, a critical green transition metal, encourages the development of improved exploration workflows, as Co typically occurs as a by-product of other metals, and the exploration and processing methods are rarely optimised for it. This paper investigates the possibility of extracting geophysical cobalt exploration indicators from petrophysical properties in Kuusamo, one of the most prominent cobalt-enriched areas in the largest European Co producer, Finland. The study region hosts 20 Au–Co deposits and occurrences classified as orogenic gold deposits with atypical metal association. Two separate mineralization stages have been distinguished: a pyrrhotite-dominated Co-stage and a pyrite-dominated Au–Co stage. The assumption in this study was that Co-enriched samples could be distinguished from Au-enriched samples and host rocks in petrophysical data due to the mineral associations. The investigation used an extensive previously acquired petrophysical and geochemical drill hole dataset from six targets complemented with new thermomagnetic data for magnetic mineral phase detection. The samples were divided into ore classes for the petrophysical data analysis. The results indicate that cobalt’s association with monoclinic pyrrhotite is a key factor for geophysical applications: the high remanent magnetisation characteristic of monoclinic pyrrhotite suggests that Co-enriched ores should typically associate with magnetic anomaly sources. Co enrichment is also related to higher electrical conductivities in comparison to Au. The workflow applied in this study illustrates how key petrophysical parameters can be connected with ore-bearing minerals and rocks, and the results indicate how cobalt could be explored more directly and effectively in the study area.

Relationship of litterfall anomalies with climatic anomalies in a mangrove swamp of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Among the set of phenological traits featuring mangrove ecosystems, litterfall production stands out with marked intra-annual and longer-term variation. Furthermore, mangrove forests resilience is one of the most important ecological attribute, reconciling the juxtaposed terrestrial and marine environment such transitional systems occupy. However, world's mangroves are nowadays facing recurrent climatic events, reflected in anomalies depicted by major drivers, including temperature and precipitation. This physical-environmental setting may either constrain or favor overall forest productivity. A combination of time series analysis (spectral density and cross-correlation techniques) and statistical model fitting (General additive model) was implemented to explore trends in total litterfall of a well-developed mangrove forest in southeastern Gulf of Mexico (Celestun Lagoon, SE Mexico) and potential association with the varying behavior of temperature (°C) and precipitation (mm month-1), highlighting their anomalies. The results are consistent with a synchronous response between litterfall production and climatic variables (mean monthly temperature and total monthly precipitation). Concurrent peak litterfall production in Celestun lagoon with high temperatures and precipitation occurred during June and October, featuring a two-month time lag for the response time. More than half of the litterfall anomalies (53.5%) could be reflecting either multiple sources of climatic anomalies (maximum, minimum, and monthly average temperature and monthly total precipitation) or single point events (cyclone landfall). This relationship dynamics showed an interannual persistence (1999-2010). The structure portrayed by the litterfall time-series was not unequivocally related to climatic anomalies. Arguably, climatic anomalies behave with different intensities and even may exhibit complex interactions among them. The study of anomalies provides a baseline for a better grasp of: i) mangrove anomalies responses and ii) their vulnerability to these extremes.

Insights into Afikpo Synclinorium structures: Subsurface analysis and intrusion outlining from airborne magnetic data

The airborne magnetic data over Afikpo Synclinorium were used to highlight subsurface structures and establish the orientations of tectonic features and their influence on the hydrocarbon play of the area. The characteristic trends of the lineaments were achieved through the center for exploration targeting of grid data analysis. The results of the TMI, residual magnetic field, first vertical, horizontal derivative, Analytic signal, and Tilt angle derivative classified the area into regions of high magnetic intensity observed around the northeastern, southwestern, and central portions of the study area. These areas characterized by anomalous signatures of short magnetic wavelengths delineate shallow magnetic sources. Conversely, regions with medium to low magnetic intensities are characterized by long magnetic wavelengths which indicates deep-seated magnetic source(s) and prospect for hydrocarbon (if other play concepts are emplace); due the thick sediment cover at the southern portion of the area (around, southern part of Nguzu, Ohafia, Biakpan, Abriba and Bende areas). The sediment thickness decreases towards north, west, North-east and north-west (dominated by Benue Trough deposit). Depth to the anomaly sources is of two categories, namely, shallow <1.0 km (dominated by NE trending structures) and deep ≥2.5 km. Ground-truthing confirmed the anomalous zone of high magnetic sources in the northeastern and central regions as Tertiary related tectonic-magmatic intrusion. The most prominent intrusion cuts across Amangwu Edda in Afikpo South through Amaeta-Oziza to Cross River State in a fissure form. This intrusion occurrence conformed to the high magnetic signature identified as a dolerite sill within the Afikpo Sub-basin. It stretches over 16 km in length with an average width of about 1.2 km, having its widest part in the northern parts of Mata Hospital Afikpo. The subsurface topographic model indicated that no fewer than 50% of the study area is characterized by sporadically distributed intrusive rocks. The result revealed several structural lineaments with high lineament density at the northcentral corner of the area trending NE-SW with fault lines (slip fault) perpendicular to it, offsetting the Akpoha, Ibii, Amasiri. and Ozara-ukwu ridges. The major drainage systems across the area followed major structural trends perpendicular to the identified major lineaments, passing through the major regional structural displacement pattern of the Basin. The emplacement of these intrusions might have impacted the hydrocarbon potential of the basin.

Space is a latent sequence: A theory of the hippocampus.

Fascinating phenomena such as landmark vector cells and splitter cells are frequently discovered in the hippocampus. Without a unifying principle, each experiment seemingly uncovers new anomalies or coding types. Here, we provide a unifying principle that the mental representation of space is an emergent property of latent higher-order sequence learning. Treating space as a sequence resolves numerous phenomena and suggests that the place field mapping methodology that interprets sequential neuronal responses in Euclidean terms might itself be a source of anomalies. Our model, clone-structured causal graph (CSCG), employs higher-order graph scaffolding to learn latent representations by mapping aliased egocentric sensory inputs to unique contexts. Learning to compress sequential and episodic experiences using CSCGs yields allocentric cognitive maps that are suitable for planning, introspection, consolidation, and abstraction. By explicating the role of Euclidean place field mapping and demonstrating how latent sequential representations unify myriad observed phenomena, our work positions the hippocampus in a sequence-centric paradigm, challenging the prevailing space-centric view.

GRIMS: global and regional ionosphere monitoring system

The ionosphere shows regular changes such as daily, 27 days, seasonal, semi-annual, annual, and 11 years. These changes can be modeled and their effects largely determined. However, in addition to regular changes, irregular changes occur in the ionosphere due to space weather conditions, natural disasters, and human-induced irregularities. GNSS is one of the instruments along with many others that can give a piece of information on the ionospheric state. Various indices/parameters are used to determine the effect of space weather conditions. The well-known ones are solar activity indices, geomagnetic storm indices, magnetic field components, proton density, and proton flux parameters. It is important to take all of these indices into consideration when investigating the source of the anomaly. Considering only some of them may lead to incorrect inferences about the source of possible anomalies. To carry out comprehensive research in this field, it is necessary to analyze a very large data set. This indicates the requirement for an automatic system. With the Global and Regional Ionosphere Monitoring System (GRIMS) designed within the scope of this study, the ionosphere can be monitored globally and regionally. The GRIMS is online at https://www.online-grims.com/. By using Global ionospheric maps and GNSS receiver data, global, regional, and station-specific anomalies can be detected regularly through methods such as HDI (Highest Density Interval) and ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average). GRIMS gathers space weather-related parameters from ionospheric data centers to help users interpret the situation, and it allows users to download the results and request data for specific days. The details of the experimental results and output products of the system designed during the geomagnetic active days of March 17, 18, 2015 are given in this paper. Moreover, geomagnetic active days that occurred between 2000 and 2023 are given in the GRIMS.

Negative Anomalies in the Atmospheric Electric Field near the Earth's Surface in Seismically Active Regions

The paper examines poorly-studied negative bay-like anomalies in the near-earth atmospheric electric field in seismically active regions at fair weather suitable for atmospheric electric observations. Observation data analysis revealed characteristic features of anomalies formation that allow us to conclude that the anomalies are associated with the deformation of near-surface rocks at tectonoseismic process. On the basis of the concept of atmospheric electricity, the source of anomalies in the electric field is a local negative space charge of small ions in the near-earth air emerged at a negative vertical gradient of electrical conductivity. It was revealed that the charge and produced negative anomalies in the electric field have deformation and emanation processes in their origin. We propose a scheme of anomalies formation and consider the role of radon and thoron in their emergence. It was found that thoron plays a more important role in some cases.

Estimation of net accumulation and removal of fluorescent dissolved organic matter in different Baltic Sea water masses

This study aimed to detect non-conservative processes that affect the distribution of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) in the Baltic Sea. An extensive data set comprised of 408 FDOM data, optical and physical profiles, and the development of a water masses balance model allowed us to ascertain the sources of mixing anomalies. These were seen as second-order deviations in the FDOM distribution as a function of salinity in three layers: surface water, Baltic Sea Winter Water, and deep water. The difference between modeled and measured FDOM values at three different excitation/emission wavelengths allowed to show the strength of non-conservative processes, such as photochemical and microbial decomposition (negative residual values) or extracellular release of dissolved organic matter from phytoplankton, heterotrophic uptake and release from anoxic sediments (positive residual values). Humic-like FDOM fractions displayed positive residuals in all seasons for intermediate and deep layers and negative residuals in surface waters. Largest accumulation rates of humic-like fractions were reached in the Gulf of Gdańsk during summer in intermediate and deep layers, while the greatest removal in surface waters was observed during spring in the Bornholm and Gotland Basins and during summer in the Gulf of Gdańsk, probably due to photodegradation. Positive residuals of the protein-like fraction were observed at the surface in summer and autumn in the Gulf of Gdańsk, probably linked to the abundance of phytoplankton and also due to the low molecular weight by-products of photodegradation of humic-like components. Spatial transects revealed an increase in humic-like residuals with depth and a strong correlation with apparent oxygen utilization, increasing with higher fluorescence and exhibiting an asymptotic trend. A relationship was found between the protein-like fractions and phytoplankton biomass proxies. A generalized concept for FDOM cycling in the Baltic Sea was proposed, highlighting photobleaching as the dominant non-linear process determining the efficiency of humic-like FDOM removal. The protein-like component was found to be more efficiently taken up by aerobic prokaryotes at the surface. Microbial utilization and reworking of organic matter, release from sediments, and a decade-long stagnation of bottom water masses, all contribute to the observed accumulation of FDOM in mesohaline deep waters below the permanent pycnocline in the Baltic Sea.

On the Crustal Sources of Magnetic Anomalies in the Middle Urals

The 800×500 sq km area of the the Middle Urals, Russia, lying between 56 to 60° northern latitude and 54 to 66° eastern longitude, was studied in terms of the deep crustal structure. The study was based on three-dimensional modeling of the sources of magnetic anomalies in three layers of the Earth’s crust. The studied area covers the folded region of the Urals and adjacent structures of the East European Platform and the West Siberian Plate. The sources modeled in the near-surface layer down to a depth of 5 km make it possible to clarify the position of magnetized massifs, mainly consisting of mafic-ultrabasic rocks, and to trace their connection with mafic-ultrabasic belts in the granite layer and root blocks in the lower basaltic layer of the Earth’s crust. When the sources in the upper crustal layer are compared with those in the lower crustal layer, it is apparent that many belts on the platform have deep-seated roots and are located above the basalt layer protrusions, while most of the massifs in the Urals do not have deep-seated roots. The springs located under the western slope of the Urals allow reliably determining the depth to the basement of the ancient platform and the location of the eastern border of the East European Platform in the lower layer of the Earth’s crust. There were found extended zones of subsidence of the roof of the lower magnetized layer, which probably mark the boundaries of various terrains forming the paleo-island arc sector of the Ural fold system. The most extensive subsidence of the roof of the lower layer occurs to the west of the Tyumen-Chudinovsky fault and is perhaps the eastern deep-seated dividing line between the Ural fold system and the West Siberian Plate.

FFT-Based Probability Density Imaging of Euler Solutions.

When using traditional Euler deconvolution optimization strategies, it is difficult to distinguish between anomalies and their corresponding Euler tails (those solutions are often distributed outside the anomaly source, forming "tail"-shaped spurious solutions, i.e., misplaced Euler solutions, which must be removed or marked) with only the structural index. The nonparametric estimation method based on the normalized B-spline probability density (BSS) is used to separate the Euler solution clusters and mark different anomaly sources according to the similarity and density characteristics of the Euler solutions. For display purposes, the BSS needs to map the samples onto the estimation grid at the points where density will be estimated in order to obtain the probability density distribution. However, if the size of the samples or the estimation grid is too large, this process can lead to high levels of memory consumption and excessive computation times. To address this issue, a fast linear binning approximation algorithm is introduced in the BSS to speed up the computation process and save time. Subsequently, the sample data are quickly projected onto the estimation grid to facilitate the discrete convolution between the grid and the density function using a fast Fourier transform. A method involving multivariate B-spline probability density estimation based on the FFT (BSSFFT), in conjunction with fast linear binning appropriation, is proposed in this paper. The results of two random normal distributions show the correctness of the BSS and BSSFFT algorithms, which is verified via a comparison with the true probability density function (pdf) and Gaussian kernel smoothing estimation algorithms. Then, the Euler solutions of the two synthetic models are analyzed using the BSS and BSSFFT algorithms. The results are consistent with their theoretical values, which verify their correctness regarding Euler solutions. Finally, the BSSFFT is applied to Bishop 5X data, and the numerical results show that the comprehensive analysis of the 3D probability density distributions using the BSSFFT algorithm, derived from the Euler solution subset of x0,y0,z0, can effectively separate and locate adjacent anomaly sources, demonstrating strong adaptability.

Cross‐Season Effect of Spring Kuroshio‐Oyashio Extension SST Anomalies on Following Summer Atmospheric Circulation

AbstractThe long‐term memory of the ocean makes sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) become a significant predictor for the subsequent atmosphere, and the tropical ocean is primarily regarded as a major source of atmospheric anomalies. While in North Pacific, the local midlatitude SSTAs also have large contributions but have not been adequately considered yet. We discover a strong connection between the Kuroshio‐Oyashio Extension (KOE) SSTAs in spring and the local atmospheric circulation anomalies in following summer at interannual timescale, wherein, the spring KOE SSTAs are generally independent of tropical ocean, and they are primarily induced by the concurrent atmospheric anomalies via surface heat flux and ocean dynamic processes. The spring KOE SSTAs can persist to summer, and then generate nearly reversed whole‐layer atmospheric circulation anomalies in their north side through both diabatic heating and atmospheric transient eddy forcing. Consequently, precipitation anomalies in Pan‐Pacific regions are distinctly modulated from spring to summer.

For the Middle Urals and adjacent territories of the East European and West Siberian platforms within geographic coordinates from 56º to 60º northern latitude and from 54º to 66º east longitude, the structural features of the anomalous magnetic and gravitational fields were studied and maps of separated anomalies were constructed for three layers of the earth's crust. Using original parallel algorithms for solving forward and inverse problems of gravimetry and magnetometry, a density model of the lithosphere and sources of magnetic anomalies in the earth's crust were constructed. The results of modeling the sources of magnetic anomalies in the Earth's crust are compared with the density model in order to study the differences in the deep structure of the western paleocontinental and eastern paleo-island arc sectors of the Ural fold system, as well as the zones of junction of the orogen with the East European and West Siberian platforms.

Overheating fault traceback of Regenerative thermal oxidizer in Multi-Source waste gas treatment system via dynamic cumulative correlation analysis

Regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO) are commonly used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries to treat emissions of volatile organic compounds but are prone to overheating risks stemming from variations in the flow and concentration of exhausted gases from diverse workshops. This paper proposes a dynamic analysis method based on correlation between various sensor-point data to determine the cause of the RTO overheating in such a multi-source waste gas treatment system. This method continuously adjusts the length of the data in the correlation analysis to comprehensively capture the dynamic changing characteristics of the data. And a strategy for the accumulation of association degrees is introduced to reveal long-standing potential causal relationships. The effectiveness of proposed method was validated in an industrial exhaust gas treatment system of a pharmaceutical company with over 1000 sensor points. The fault diagnosis results are consistent with those of the actual on-site investigation in 5 real cases. Our proposed method can provide relatively accurate results within 2–3 h, much faster than the manual investigation of the workers (2 days on average). Moreover, compared to traditional static correlation analysis methods, our method can narrow down the investigation scope by more than 5 times. This study provides a practical and effective method for tracing the source of anomalies in complex dynamic systems, and also contributes to the safe and stable operation of chemical engineering systems.

IDENTIFICATION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC ULTRA LOW FREQUENCY (ULF) SIGNAL ANOMALIES AS PRECURSORS OF A MAGNITUDE 5 EARTHQUAKE IN THE SULAWESI REGION

Sulawesi is situated at the intersection of three tectonic plates the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Philippine plates. The Palu Koro fault is one of the primary causes of seismic activity in the Sulawesi region, making it vulnerable to earthquakes on this Island. As an initial step in disaster mitigation, the information provided is useful in determining the initial signs before the occurrence of an earthquake, it is necessary to identify Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) Signal Anomalies as earthquake precursors. The methods employed are those of power spectrum density (PSD) and single-station transfer function (SSTF). The analysis of anomalies suspected of being precursors to 5 earthquake events revealed that in the February 27, 2023 earthquake, the anomaly appeared twice with a lead time of 17 days. In the February 28, 2023 earthquake, the anomaly appeared twice. In the March 7, 2023 earthquake, the anomaly appeared 3 times with a lead time of 20 days. The March 28, 2023 earthquake had 6 anomalies with a lead time of 24 days. The April 6, 2023 earthquake had 5 anomalies with a lead time of 29 days. anomalies were detected with lead times ranging from 17 to 30 days. The anomaly source azimuth direction was also determined.

Using Euler Deconvolution as Part of a Mineral Exploration Project

Mineral exploration projects can make considerable use of a variety of geophysical techniques and datasets, including magnetic and gravity data. The interpretation of large quantities of data can be very time consuming, so semi-automatic interpretation techniques are often used to provide initial estimates of the parameters (primarily the location and depth) of the sources of anomalies. Euler deconvolution is a commonly used interpretation method for potential fields which has a number of advantages over many other techniques, such as working in the presence of remanent magnetisation, and not being restricted to a particular model such as a contact. A second-order version of Euler’s equation is introduced here, which is much less affected by trends in the data than the standard method and additionally produces depth parabolas, which simplify the interpretation of results. The method was applied to aeromagnetic data from a mineral exploration project in Southern Africa and provided plausible results.

Constraints on the Spatial Distribution of Lunar Crustal Magnetic Sources From Orbital Magnetic Field Data

AbstractSpacecraft measurements show that the crust of the Moon is heterogeneously magnetized. The sources of these magnetic anomalies are yet not fully understood, with most not being related to known geological structures or processes. Here, we use an inversion methodology that relies on the assumption of unidirectional magnetization, commonly referred to as Parker's method, to elucidate the origin of the magnetic sources by constraining the location and geometry of the underlying magnetization. This method has been used previously to infer the direction of the underlying magnetization but it has not been tested as to whether it can infer the geometry of the source. The performance of the method is here assessed by conducting a variety of tests, using synthetic magnetized bodies of different geometries mimicking the main geological structures potentially magnetized within the lunar crust. Results from our tests show that this method successfully localizes and delineates the two‐dimensional surface projection of subsurface three‐dimensional magnetized bodies, provided their magnetization is close to unidirectional and the magnetic field data are of sufficient spatial resolution and reasonable signal‐to‐noise ratio. We applied this inversion method to two different lunar magnetic anomalies, the Mendel‐Rydberg impact basin and the Reiner Gamma swirl. For Mendel‐Rydberg, our analysis shows that the strongest magnetic sources are located within the basin's inner ring, whereas for Reiner Gamma, the strongest magnetic sources form a narrow dike‐like body that emanates from the center of the Marius Hills volcanic complex.

Different mechanisms of air temperature anomalies in the Yangtze River between early and late summer

The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLRYR) exhibit notable interannual variability in seasonal-mean air temperature amid ongoing global warming. This study elucidates the specific mechanisms governing anomalous air temperatures during early (June) and late summer (July to August) in the MLRYR. Early summer temperatures arise from anomalous sinking driven by negative anomalies in moist enthalpy advection in the lower troposphere, as a response to warm sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the tropical western Pacific. This induces a low-level cyclone anomaly over Southeast Asia, reducing specific humidity and determining anomalous vertical motion over the MLRYR. In contrast, late summer temperatures are induced by mid-upper tropospheric descending anomalies over the MLRYR. The combined influence of SSTA in the western Pacific and North Atlantic sustains warmer air by reinforcing a barotropic anticyclone over North China through a mid-latitude wave train. Subsequent anomalous negative potential vorticity advection in the upper troposphere strengthens sinking motion over the MLRYR. The seasonal evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon and SSTA is pivotal in the distinct mechanisms governing warmer air temperatures over the MLRYR. While numerical experiments capture general features, the regulation of SSTA is subject to uncertainty due to the atmospheric intrinsic patterns. This research distinguishes predictability sources of air temperature anomalies over the MLRYR between early and late summer, emphasizing the combined influence of SSTA beyond the ENSO domain on East Asian climate.

Improved Anomaly Detection and Localization Using Whitening-Enhanced Autoencoders

Anomaly detection is of considerable significance in engineering applications, such as the monitoring and control of large-scale energy systems. This paper investigates the ability to accurately detect and localize the source of anomalies, using an autoencoder neural network-based detector. Correlations between residuals are identified as a source of misclassifications, and whitening transformations that decorrelate input features and/or residuals are analyzed as a potential solution. For two use cases, regarding spatially distributed wind power generation and temporal profiles of electricity consumption, the performance of various data processing combinations was quantified. Whitening of the input data was found to be most beneficial for accurate detection, with a slight benefit for the combined whitening of inputs and residuals. For localization of anomalies, whitening of residuals was preferred, and the best performance was obtained using standardization of the input data and whitening of the residuals using the <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">ZCA</i> or <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">ZCA-cor</i> whitening matrix with a small additional offset.

An algorithm for solving a nonlinear inverse problem of gravity exploration using the particle swarm optimization for a two-dimensional horizontal prism is considered. After a relatively small number of iterations, the size and depth of the disturbing object were determined. Three options were used to adjust the speed of movement of the swarm during the optimization process. The interpretation results are presented in the form of a geodensity model that corresponds to the minimum discrepancy between the observed and theoretical fields, as well as a vertical isoline map of the localization function. A quantitative interpretation of the gravity force of the Berezovskiy anomalous zone (Perm region) was carried out.
