Knowledge about and attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination of rural residents in Zambales, Philippines

Vaccines are among the most effective preventive measures developed to minimize the risks of COVID-19. This cross-sectional study employs an online survey to determine the knowledge and attitude toward COVID-19 vaccination among the general population in rural Zambales, Philippines. A total of 690 residents responded to the knowledge and attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination survey questionnaire (KAC19V-SQ) regarding the residents' knowledge about and attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination. Television, Facebook and YouTube are the residents' primary sources of COVID-19 vaccine information. Almost all of them (98.0%) know about the COVID-19 vaccine, but only 81.3% of the residents know about its effectiveness. Most (69.7%) indicated they want to get vaccinated. Zambales residents' knowledge about COVID-19 vaccination was low. Despite having a low level of knowledge, respondents showed a favorable attitude (mean±SD:2.76±0.47) toward COVID-19 vaccination. Women had a less favorable attitude than men. Furthermore, a moderately positive correlation (r=0.511, p<0.01) was noted between knowledge and attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination. It is imperative that the government works in tandem with public health experts, local government officials, and academic institutions to develop and implement initiatives geared towards enhancing public awareness and fostering a positive outlook towards COVID-19 vaccination.

Trusted sources of information on COVID-19 vaccine in Uganda

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted communities worldwide, particularly in developing countries. To successfully control the pandemic, correct information and more than 80% vaccine coverage in a population were required. However, misinformation and disinformation could impact this, thus increasing COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in communities. Several studies observed the effect of misinformation and disinformation on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and other responses to the pandemic in the African continent. Thus, the most trusted sources of information on COVID-19 vaccines are critical for the successful management and control of the pandemic. This study aimed to assess the most trusted sources of information on COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic in Uganda.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study on 587 adult population members in northern Uganda. Single-stage stratified and systematic sampling methods were used to select participants from northern Uganda. An interviewer-administered questionnaire with an internal validity of Cronbach’s α = 0.72 was used for data collection. An Institution Review Board (IRB) approved this study and Stata version 18 was used for data analysis. A Pearson Chi-square (χ2) analysis was conducted to assess associations between trusted sources of COVID-19 vaccine information and selected independent variables. Fisher’s exact test considered associations when the cell value following cross-tabulation was < 5. A P-value < 0.05 was used as evidence for an association between trusted sources of information and independent variables. All results were presented as frequencies, proportions, Chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests, and P-values at 95% Confidence Intervals (CI).ResultsIn a study of 587 participants, most were males, 335(57.1%), in the age group of 25–34 years, 180(31.4%), and the most trusted source of COVID-19 vaccine information were the traditional media sources for example, Televisions, Radios, and Newspapers, 349(33.6%). There was no significant association between sex and trusted sources of COVID-19 vaccine information. However, by age-group population, COVID-19 vaccine information was significantly associated with internet use (14.7% versus 85.3%; p = 0.02), information from family members (9.4% versus 90.6%; p < 0.01), and the Government/Ministry of Health (37.9% versus 62.1%; p < 0.01). Between healthcare workers and non-health workers, it was significantly associated with internet use (32.2% versus 67.8%; p = 0.03), healthcare providers (32.5% versus 67.5%; p < 0.018), the Government/Ministry of Health (31.1% versus 68.9%; p < 0.01), and scientific articles (44.7% versus 55.3%; p < 0.01).ConclusionThe most trusted sources of COVID-19 vaccine information in northern Uganda were Televisions, Radios, and Newspapers. The trusted sources of COVID-19 vaccine information were not significantly different between males and females. However, there were significant differences among age groups and occupations of participants with younger age groups (≤ 44 years) and non-healthcare workers having more trust in Televisions, Radios, and Newspapers. Thus, for effective management of an epidemic, there is a need for accurate communication so that misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation in the era of “infodemic” do not disrupt the flow of correct information to communities.

Digital health literacy, vaccine information sources, and vaccine acceptance among parents in Ontario: Quantitative findings from a mixed methods study.

Parents make important vaccination decisions for their children and many variables affect parents' decisions to accept or decline vaccines. Parents are tasked with locating, understanding, and applying information to inform health decisions often using online resources; however, the digital health literacy levels of parents are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate parents' digital health literacy levels, their sources for vaccine information, and analyze how demographics, digital health literacy, health literacy, parental attitudes and vaccine beliefs, trust, and vaccine information sources predict vaccine acceptance. Quantitative findings of a mixed methods study that examined parental vaccine decision making across the continuum of vaccine hesitant to vaccine accepting is reported. An online survey of parents of young children living in Ontario, Canada was conducted in 2022. Multiple linear regression determined predictors of vaccine acceptance. 219 participants completed the survey and on average reported adequate digital health literacy skill. Healthcare providers were reported as the most commonly used source of vaccine information. Two models were retained that predicted vaccine acceptance, both models predicted about 50% of the variability in vaccine acceptance. Model A identified that trust predicted parent vaccine acceptance and model B identified that digital health literacy, and the vaccine information sources healthcare providers, family and friends, and alternate healthcare providers predicted vaccine acceptance. Family and friends and alternate healthcare providers negatively predicted vaccine acceptance. Most parents in our study had high levels of digital health literacy. Opportunities exist for further research and policy change focused on trust at a systemic public health level. While clinical level implications included the importance of healthcare providers as a vaccine information source and adequate digital health literacy to facilitate parental vaccine decision making. Continued efforts to develop awareness on the importance of digital health literacy among the public and healthcare providers is needed, including further research on the digital health literacy levels of Canadians.

Influence of COVID-19 on trust in routine immunization, health information sources and pandemic preparedness in 23 countries in 2023.

It is unclear how great a challenge pandemic and vaccine fatigue present to public health. We assessed perspectives on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and routine immunization as well as trust in pandemic information sources and future pandemic preparedness in a survey of 23,000 adults in 23 countries in October 2023. The participants reported a lower intent to get a COVID-19 booster vaccine in 2023 (71.6%), compared with 2022 (87.9%). A total of 60.8% expressed being more willing to get vaccinated for diseases other than COVID-19 as a result of their experience during the pandemic, while 23.1% reported being less willing. Trust in 11 selected sources of vaccine information each averaged less than 7 on a 10-point scale with one's own doctor or nurse and the World Health Organization, averaging a 6.9 and 6.5, respectively. Our findings emphasize that vaccine hesitancy and trust challenges remain for public health practitioners, underscoring the need for targeted, culturally sensitive health communication strategies.

Development and evaluation of virtual simulation games to increase the confidence and self-efficacy of healthcare learners in vaccine communication, advocacy, and promotion

BackgroundAlthough healthcare providers (HCPs) are the most trusted source of vaccine information, there is a paucity of easily accessible, multidisciplinary educational tools on vaccine communication for them. Virtual simulation games (VSGs) are innovative yet accessible and effective tools in healthcare education. The objectives of our study were to develop VSGs to increase HCP confidence and self-efficacy in vaccine communication, advocacy, and promotion, and evaluate the VSGs’ effectiveness using a pre-post self-assessment pilot study.MethodsA multidisciplinary team of experts in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and simulation development created three VSGs for HCP learners focused on addressing conversations with vaccine hesitant individuals. We evaluated the VSGs with 24 nursing students, 30 pharmacy students, and 18 medical residents who completed surveys and 6-point Likert scale pre-post self-assessments to measure changes in their confidence and self-efficacy.ResultsThere were no significant differences in baseline confidence and self-efficacy across the three HCP disciplines, despite varied levels of education. Post-VSG confidence and self-efficacy (median: 5) were significantly higher than pre-VSG (median: 4–5) for all three HCP disciplines (P ≤ 0.0005), highlighting the effectiveness of the VSGs. Medical residents reported significantly lower post-VSG confidence and self-efficacy than nursing and pharmacy learners despite completing the most significant amount of education.ConclusionsFollowing the completion of the VSGs, learners in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy showed significant improvement in their self-assessed confidence and self-efficacy in holding vaccine conversations. The VSGs as an educational tool, in combination with existing clinical immunization training, can be used to increase HCP confidence and engagement in vaccine discussions with patients, which may ultimately lead to increased vaccine confidence among patients.

Vaccination acceptance and its associated factors in patients on hemodialysis in Austria: A nationwide survey.

Vaccines are essential in disease prevention among patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD). However, during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, there has been an increased rate of vaccination hesitancy. A better understanding of patients' opinions may help identify a more targeted approach to increase vaccination rates. Questionnaires with 43 questions based on the recommendations of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization Working Group on Vaccine Hesitancy were administered to patients during routine HD sessions at different dialysis centers in Austria. In total, 347 patients participated in this study. Approximately 81% of the patients were aged > 54 years, and 65% were men. Further, 53% of patients were receiving HD from private units. In ~ 72% of patients, the dialysis physicians were the source of vaccination information. Meanwhile, the source of information in 28% of patients was the primary care physician (28%), and 18% of patients obtained vaccination details from the internet. The number of younger (aged < 55 years) patients who were more likely to use online content as the main source of information was significantly higher than that of older patients (32 vs. 15%, p = 0.001). Furthermore, the number of older patients who wanted to receive more information from the dialysis physician was significantly higher than that of younger patients (57 vs. 38%, p = 0.009). Only 65% of patients had a good understanding of the mechanisms of action of vaccines. The younger population (aged 18 - 54 years) had a higher number of individuals with a good understanding of vaccine mechanisms than the older population (78 vs. 62%, p = 0.016). Moreover, 86% of the whole population wanted to complete the recommended vaccinations. However, only 39% of respondents had sufficient information about the vaccination plan in Austrian. Numerous patients receiving HD wanted to obtain more information from their dialysis physicians. Increased awareness among providers and targeted communication might increase vaccination rates.

Factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine receipt among mobile phone users in Malawi: Findings from a national mobile-based syndromic surveillance survey, July 2021-April 2022.

Malawi recommended COVID-19 vaccines for adults aged ≥18 years in March 2021. We assessed factors associated with receiving COVID-19 vaccines in Malawi as part of a telephone-based syndromic surveillance survey. We conducted telephone-based syndromic surveillance surveys with questions on COVID-19 vaccine receipt among adults (≥18 years old) upon verbal consent from July 2021 to April 2022. We used random digit dialing to select mobile phone numbers and employed electronic data collection forms on secure tablets. Survey questions included whether the respondent had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. We used multivariable analysis to identify factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine receipt. Of the 51,577 participants enrolled; 65.7% were male. Males were less likely to receive the COVID-19 vaccine than females (AOR 0.83, 95% CI 0.80-0.86). Compared to those aged 18-24 years, older age had increased odds of vaccine receipt: 25-34 years (AOR 1.32, 95% CI 1.24-1.40), 35-44 years (AOR 2.00, 95% CI 1.88-2.13), 45-54 years (AOR 3.02, 95% CI 2.82-3.24), 55-64 years (AOR 3.24, 95% CI 2.93-3.57) and 65 years+ (AOR 3.98, 95% CI 3.52-4.49). Respondents without formal education were less likely to receive vaccination compared to those with primary (AOR 1.30, 95% CI 1.14-1.48), secondary (AOR 1.76, 95% CI 1.55-2.01), and tertiary (AOR 3.37, 95% CI 2.95-3.86) education. Respondents who thought COVID-19 vaccines were unsafe were less likely to receive vaccination than those who thought it was very safe (AOR 0.26, 95% CI 0.25-0.28). Residents of the Central and Southern regions had reduced odds of vaccine receipt compared to those in the North (AORs 0.79, (95% CI 0.74-0.84) and 0.55, (95% CI 0.52-0.58) respectively). Radio (72.6%), health facilities (52.1%), and social media (16.0%) were the more common self-reported sources of COVID-19 vaccine information. COVID-19 vaccine receipt is associated with gender, age, education, and residence. It is important to consider these factors when implementing COVID-19 vaccination programs.

SOURCES OF VACCINE INFORMATION: MISGIVINGS AND TRUST ISSUES AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN NORTH DAKOTA

Abstract Older adults consistently have relatively high vaccination rates. What is not fully understood is how trust in immunization information sources impacts vaccine decision-making among older adults. This study examines older adults’ perceptions and decision-making processes for vaccines such as influenza, pneumonia, shingles, and COVID-19. Older adults (65+) in North Dakota (N=51) who participated in a larger survey study on vaccine behaviors voluntarily agreed to participate in a follow-up phone interview (November 2022-January 2023). Qualitative, semi-structured phone interviews focused on access, knowledge, and decision about vaccines. Interview transcripts were inductively coded for emergent themes related to trust. Three themes were identified: implicit trust in information sources, uncertainty who to trust for vaccine information, and regaining trust in information sources. Implicit trust focused on familiarity with sources of information (such as inherently trusting family members), source expertise (such as doctor recommendations), and reliability of sources (including if the source always provides accurate information). The second theme, uncertainty who to trust, stressed confusion over source inconsistency, such as changing positions on vaccines, or having opposing sources that both seem to be trustworthy. The final theme, regaining trust in information sources, highlighted if and how trust in a source of vaccine information could be recovered, including transparency, sincerity, and verifying immunization information through obtaining a second opinion. These findings contribute to the understanding of vaccine decision-making among older adults and provide focus areas for interventions to address lack of trust in information sources and improve immunization rates for this population.

Understanding HPV Vaccine Hesitancy and What Helped Hesitant Adopter Parents Have Their Children Vaccinated Despite Their Hesitancy

IntroductionSince 2006, an effective vaccine preventing most HPV-related cancers has been available in the US. One out of four parents reported HPV vaccine hesitancy; however, little is known about HPV vaccine-hesitant parents who vaccinate their children (e.g., hesitant adopters). MethodWe use individual interviews (n=8) to explore hesitancy and facilitators for overcoming hesitancy among hesitant adopter parents. We drew a priori codes from the Increasing Vaccination Model (IVM) domains (thoughts and feelings, social processes, and practical concerns) and identified seven emergent secondary themes. ResultsUnderstandable information about safety, side effects, and effectiveness could address HPV vaccine hesitancy. Healthcare professionals, family, friends, and co-workers were trusted vaccine and vaccination information sources. The study documents the lack of access to HPV vaccines with established healthcare providers as a barrier to vaccination. DiscussionThis is the first study of hesitant-adopter parents that expands our understanding of factors driving HPV vaccination among them. Study insights can inform future efforts to increase HPV vaccine uptake among the hesitant.

Abstract A043: Trusted sources of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine information in Mexican American parents: A cross-sectional study

Abstract Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with many types of cancers that disproportionately impact Hispanics. Mortality is 20% higher in Hispanic women than non-Hispanic white women who have cervical cancer. Hispanic men are 4x times more likely to have HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer than women (9,100 cases vs. 2,000 cases, respectively) and Hispanic males have higher rates of HPV-associated penile cancer than non-Hispanics. An HPV vaccine exists that can prevent 90% of HPV-associated cancers; however, HPV vaccination rates have declined by approximately 75% in adolescents during the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to identify trusted sources of HPV vaccine information in Hispanics of Mexican American origin. A cross-sectional study design with an online survey was used to collect data from Mexican American parents of children 11-17 years of age. Two hundred and twenty-five parents (M age = 38.30, SD = 7.30) who identified predominately as female (83.1%) were included in the study. Over a third (39.1%, n = 88) of the participants reported to have three or more children and most of the sample (68%; n =153) reported to have vaccinated at least one of their children with the HPV vaccine. When participants were asked who they trust to provide information about the HPV vaccine, the top five trusted sources of HPV vaccine information were medical doctors (94.7%), registered nurses (52%), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (47.1%), the World Health Organization (43.1%), and pharmacists (25.3%). The least trusted sources of HPV vaccine information were the president of the U.S. (7.6%) and religious leaders (2.7%). Linear regression models revealed that HPV vaccine acceptance was associated with trusting registered nurses (p &amp;lt; .001) and the Centers for Disease and Control (p = .014) for recommending the HPV vaccine. Lastly, we examined the association between family-held beliefs about vaccines and personal beliefs about vaccines. Correlations ranged from -.28 to .72. The strongest correlation was between having a family with negative feelings about vaccines while growing up and believing that vaccines can cause serious illness (r = 0.72; p &amp;lt; .001). Importantly, the family-held belief that vaccines cause autism was strongly correlated with personal beliefs that vaccines cause autism (r = 0.56; p &amp;lt; .001). Several important findings emerged in the current study highlighting the importance of having trusted sources of HPV vaccine information to promote the HPV vaccine. Our findings have implications for designing health communications and interventions that incorporate trusted sources of HPV vaccine information to promote the HPV vaccine in Mexican American families. SCD and COVID-19 Vaccines: What Do Pediatric Patients Want to Know?

Introduction: Recent polls reported that only 49% of adults plan to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, while 31% reported being uncertain and 20% reporting they would not receive a vaccine citing safety as a major concern. There are disparities related to intention to receive a vaccine with 56% of whites, 25% of Blacks, and 37% of Hispanics citing they would receive a vaccine. Individuals living with sickle cell disease (SCD) were noted to be an at-risk population for higher morbidity and mortality with COVID-19 infection. Health disparities in COVID-19 outcomes could become exacerbated if racial and ethnic minorities like those with sickle cell disease (SCD) are less likely to receive a vaccine. While polls provide insight into the public's intention to receive COVID-19 vaccines, most of them include only adults. Further, there are limited empirical data on what influences people's intent to get vaccinated. Thus, there is a need to examine educational needs and preferences with respect to COVID-19 vaccines among adolescents and young adults with SCD and caregivers of children with SCD. This research is significant because it is essential to developing targeted educational interventions to promote COVID-19 vaccine uptake in pediatric patients with SCD. Methods: We conducted N=17 qualitative interviews with parents/caregivers (N=6), young adults 18 years and older (n=8), and adolescents ages 12-17 years (n=3) receiving care at one of two sickle cell centers in the US. After achieving thematic saturation, a directed content analysis approach was used to code interview data into themes related to four categories: a) COVID-19 vaccine concerns; b) key influencers for decision-making about COVID-19 vaccines; c) sources of trustworthy COVID-19 vaccine information; and d) preferred methods of receiving COVID-19 vaccine information. Two authors independently coded all the transcripts (AL, CM), and a third author served as a reliability coder. To promote rigor, interrater reliability was assessed (&amp;gt;90%) and themes were reviewed with clinical staff and patients (member checking). Results: Participants' top COVID-19 vaccine concerns were side effects and that they are understudied in sickle cell disease. Key influences for getting the vaccine included healthcare provider recommendation, a desire to increase protection and decrease worry, and the ability to return to normal activities. Sources of trustworthy information included the healthcare team, reputable websites (e.g., CDC) and personal recommendations. Preferred methods were talking directly with and asking follow-up questions to their hematology team and vaccine experts. Least preferred methods included the media and conducting one's own research which some found overwhelming. Using an iterative design process, themes were then converted into educational interventions which will be featured in this poster (e.g., patient vaccine question cards, expert videos, and provider scripts). Conclusions: Study results support that educational efforts about COVID-19 vaccines for pediatric patients with SCD should involve the hematology team who is viewed as a trustworthy source of information. Given vaccine concerns, teams may benefit from tools that help them foster conversations about vaccine protection and specific data about SCD and the vaccines. Results further indicate that clear and concise information about COVID-19 vaccines presented in a variety of formats (e.g., expert videos, websites) may be beneficial.

Survey of Vaccine Hesitancy in Patients Visiting Three Tertiary-care Emergency Departments in Southeast Louisiana.

Vaccine hesitancy has been a barrier to achieving herd immunity during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Having low socioeconomic status and education levels, and being a person of color, are associated with higher COVID-19 infection risk and worse outcomes. These same groups are associated with higher vaccine hesitancy. The state of Louisiana has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country. In this study we aimed to identify demographic, perspective, and health behavior factors associated with vaccine hesitancy in emergency departments (ED) in Southeast Louisiana. A cross-sectional survey was distributed at three tertiary-care hospital EDs. Patients >18years old and not in acute distress were recruited between April-July 2021. The 37-item questionnaire addressed socioeconomic demographics, social determinants of health, COVID-19 safety practices, thoughts and perceptions on COVID-19 and vaccines, sources of COVID-19 and vaccine information, and trust in the healthcare system. Overall, 247 patients completed our survey. Of those, 29.6% reported they were vaccine hesitant. These respondents were significantly more likely, when compared to vaccine-acceptant respondents, to never have married, to have some college education, make less than <$25,000 in household earnings yearly, be unsure whether vaccines prevent disease, not have discussed the COVID-19 vaccine with their primary care doctor, and to prefer to do their own research for COVID-19 vaccine information. We observed no statistically significant differences based on gender, race/ethnicity, parental status, area of living, or their perceived risk of needing hospitalization for treatment or dying from the virus. Vaccine hesitancy was associated with multiple socioeconomic factors, perspectives, and beliefs. Vaccine-hesitant individuals were more uncertain about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine, the feasibility of obtaining the vaccine, and its efficacy. Public health interventions aimed at these findings and improving public trust in healthcare systems are needed to increase vaccine acceptance.

Parental Hesitancy and Attitude Concerning COVID-19 Vaccine and Its Side Effects in Saudi Arabia, Eastern Region.

Background Vaccine hesitancy poses a substantial challenge to the field of public health. There are various factors that influence the willingness of parents to vaccinate their children. Addressing the factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy within the community has the potential to facilitate the development of more effective approaches for global vaccination initiatives. This study aims to assess parents' perspectives regarding the immunization of children aged five to 12 against COVID-19, including their experiences with adverse effects, as well as the factors that influence their hesitancy or acceptance of the vaccine in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Methods A web-based, cross-sectional study utilized an independently administered online questionnaire. The validated questionnaire was distributed to study participants through social networking platforms in order to recruit individuals from various locations in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia, such as Dammam, Al-Hassa, Al-Jubail, Ras Tanura, Dhahran, Al-Khobar, and Al-Qatif. Results The study encompassed a total of 399 participants. The most commonly reported adverse effects among the first and second children were pain at the injection site (1st child: 267 (66.70%), second child: 263 (66.20%)) and fever (1st child: 171 (43.10%), second child: 187 (47.50%)). A significant proportion of the participants, specifically 139 individuals (35%), expressed apprehension regarding immunization. This concern stemmed from various factors, including the fear of experiencing adverse effects, skepticism regarding the vaccine's efficacy, and exposure to potentially harmful information about the vaccine. Ninety-nine participants, accounting for 25% of the sample, indicated their agreement with the safety of COVID-19. Additionally, 104 participants, constituting 26% of the sample, held the belief that receiving vaccination aids in the prevention of severe illnesses caused by COVID-19. Notably, the most prevalent reason for vaccine hesitancy among participants was the fear of experiencing adverse effects. A total of 132 individuals, accounting for 33% of the participants, identified healthcare providers, including physicians and scientists, as reliable and trustworthy sources of vaccine information. A statistically significant correlation was observed between the demographic variables of the participants and their acceptance of the vaccine. Conclusion The study observed an acceptable vaccination rate among children aged five to 12 for the COVID-19 vaccine. Based on the investigation results, the primary apprehension expressed by parents regarding the immunization of their offspring pertained to the potential negative consequences associated with the vaccine. Nonetheless, it was observed that adverse effects were reported in less than fifty percent of vaccinated children. Addressing the concerns pertaining to the COVID-19 vaccination can enhance global participation in the immunization program aimed at mitigating future pandemics.

Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Status and Correlates Among Mid-Adult Women: Connecticut, USA, 2016-2019.

Background: In 2019, the CDC expanded their recommendations for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination beyond age 26 years to include shared clinical decision-making (SCDM) among adults aged 27-45 years ("mid-adults"). The purpose of this study was to describe HPV vaccination status among mid-adult women before the implementation of SCDM for HPV vaccination. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during 2016-2019 in Connecticut, United States, and enrolled women born in 1981 or later (birth cohorts eligible for HPV vaccination). This analysis was restricted to participants aged 27 years and older at the time of the survey. Correlates of vaccination status, sources of vaccine information, and reasons for not receiving the vaccine were examined. Results: Among 298 participants, 64.4% had not received HPV vaccine. Other than age (younger age was associated with being vaccinated), no other demographic or behavioral correlates were associated with vaccination. Compared with unvaccinated women, vaccinated women were more likely to have heard about the HPV vaccine from a doctor (odds ratio [OR] = 3.45, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.00-5.88) and less likely to have heard about it from television (OR = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.13-0.41). The main reasons for not being vaccinated were "vaccine not offered" (48%) and "too old" (40%). Conclusions: A majority of mid-adult women in this study were not previously vaccinated against HPV, signaling the large opportunity for SCDM with this population. This may be facilitated by ensuring health care providers and mid-adult women know about the availability and potential benefits of HPV vaccination to inform decision making.

Sentiment towards vaccinations in healthcare workers of five European countries after the pandemic

Abstract Background Health care workers (HCWs) are a trusted source of vaccine information for patients and communities. Our aim is to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on European HCWs’ sentiment towards vaccination (STV), focusing on COVID-19 and influenza. Methods We designed a multilingual Knowledge-Attitudes-Practice web-survey with 4-point Likert items addressed to HCWs in 11 countries and spread through national Public Health Associations. We present a preliminary analysis of responses from France (n = 206), Germany (n = 376), Italy (n = 394), Spain (n = 549) and the United Kingdom (n = 172, UK). Results The completion rate is 81% (1,374/1,697). Respondents are mostly female (66%), with a median age of 45, mainly employed as physicians (44%). HCWs agree on the effectiveness (92%), safety (89%) and necessity (91%) of vaccinations in general, but many think that their side effects are downplayed by pharmaceutical companies (46%) and health authorities (39%). The majority received 3+ doses of COVID-19 vaccines (72%) and agree that these vaccines are effective (88%) and have a favorable benefit-risk ratio (83%). However, many have concerns about their administration in pregnancy (76%). Most HCWs agree with mandatory COVID-19 vaccine for their category (59%) and are ready to accept a further COVID-19 booster vaccination if recommended (72%). The majority agree that the pandemic increased their attention to update their vaccination schedule (62%) and their confidence in vaccines safety (53%). Accordingly, only 50% received regular influenza vaccination prior to the pandemic, whereas 67% got vaccinated in the last season and 65% plan to do so in the next one. Overall, STV is more positive in Italy and Spain, less marked in Italy has the lowest scores in Germany. Conclusions Despite persisting doubts about COVID-19 vaccines and differences among countries, the sentiment towards vaccinations in European HCWs is generally positive and has improved after the pandemic. Key messages • European healthcare workers have generally positive sentiment towards vaccination, including COVID-19 and influenza, despite concerns about side effects and about administration during pregnancy. • The COVID-19 pandemic increased European HCWs’ attention to update their vaccination schedules, with the majority agreeing on the effectiveness, safety, and necessity of vaccinations in general.

Uptake of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination among structurally-marginalized people who use drugs in Vancouver, Canada

We sought to evaluate the rates and predictors of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination among members of a structurally-marginalized population of people who use drugs (PWUD) during a targeted, community-wide, vaccination campaign in Vancouver, Canada. Interviewer-administered data were collected from study participants between June 2021 and March 2022. Generalized estimating equation analysis was used to identify factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccine uptake, ascertained through a province-wide vaccine registry. Among 223 PWUD, 107 (48.0%) reported receipt of at least two SARS-CoV-2 vaccine doses at baseline and this increased to 151 (67.7%) by the end of the study period. Using social media as a source of vaccine information was negatively associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccine uptake (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.09–0.81) and HIV seropositivity (AOR 2.68, 95% CI 1.12–6.39) and older age (AOR 1.27, 95% CI 1.07–1.51) were positively associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccine uptake. These findings suggest that the targeted vaccination campaign in Vancouver may be an effective model to promote SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in other jurisdictions. However, using social media as a source of vaccine information likely reduced SARS-CoV-2 vaccine uptake in PWUD arguing for further efforts to promote accessible and evidence-based vaccine information among marginalized populations.

COVID-19 Vaccination Willingness and Reasons for Vaccine Refusal

Hong Kong was held as an exemplar for pandemic response until it recorded the world's highest daily COVID-19 mortality, which was likely due to vaccine refusal. To prevent this high mortality in future pandemics, information on underlying reasons for vaccine refusal is necessary. To track the evolution of COVID-19 vaccination willingness and uptake from before vaccine rollout to mass vaccination, to examine factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine refusal and compare with data from Singapore, and to assess the population attributable fraction for vaccine refusal. This cohort study used data from randomly sampled participants from 14 waves of population-based studies in Hong Kong (February 2020 to May 2022) and 2 waves of population-based studies in Singapore (May 2020 to June 2021 and October 2021 to January 2022), and a population-wide registry of COVID-19 vaccination appointments. Data were analyzed from February 23, 2021, to May 30, 2022. Trust in COVID-19 vaccine information sources (ie, health authorities, physicians, traditional media, and social media); COVID-19 vaccine confidence on effectiveness, safety, and importance; COVID-19 vaccine misconceptions on safety and high-risk groups; political views; and COVID-19 policies (ie, workplace vaccine mandates and vaccine pass). Primary outcomes were the weighted prevalence of COVID-19 vaccination willingness over the pandemic, adjusted incidence rate ratios, and population attributable fractions of COVID-19 vaccine refusal. A secondary outcome was change in daily COVID-19 vaccination appointments. The study included 28 007 interviews from 20 waves of longitudinal data, with 1114 participants in the most recent wave (median [range] age, 54.2 years [20-92] years; 571 [51.3%] female). Four factors-mistrust in health authorities, low vaccine confidence, vaccine misconceptions, and political views-could jointly account for 82.2% (95% CI, 62.3%-100.0%) of vaccine refusal in adults aged 18 to 59 years and 69.3% (95% CI, 47.2%-91.4%) of vaccine refusal in adults aged 60 years and older. Workplace vaccine mandates were associated with 62.2% (95% CI, 9.9%-139.2%) increases in daily COVID-19 vaccination appointments, and the Hong Kong vaccine pass was associated with 124.8% (95% CI, 65.9%-204.6%) increases in daily COVID-19 vaccination appointments. These findings suggest that trust in health authorities was fundamental to overcoming vaccine hesitancy. As such, engendering trust in health care professionals, experts, and public health agencies should be incorporated into pandemic preparedness and response.

Lived Experiences of the COVID-19 Pandemic Among the Vietnamese Population in the Region of Peel.

Racial discrimination towards Southeast Asian populations is a longstanding issue in Canada which has intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although extensive work demonstrates inequities among Southeast Asian communities during the pandemic, much work categorizes Asians as one homogenous population neglecting the unique experiences of different Asian subgroups along with the ways COVID-19 differentially affects Southeast Asians. To attend to population variations, this paper explores the lived experiences among Vietnamese individuals during the pandemic in the Peel Region of Ontario Canada. Specifically, this paper examines social and economic impacts of COVID-19, access to healthcare services and vaccines, sources of vaccine information, and impacts of COVID-19 related discrimination among young and older adults. Drawing on in-depth interviews with young and older adults (n=6:8) the results reveal important social and economic impacts created by COVID-19 that vary across generations andimpact health and wellbeing. These impacts are challenged further by barriers to healthcare access which were compounded by intersecting inequities experienced among Vietnamese immigrants in the Peel Region. While vaccine hesitancy was not a main concern, the findings demonstrate important generational differences with respect to commonly used and trusted information related to historical events and social media use. Although racial discrimination was a dominant concern, younger participants did not feel unsafe but expressed concern for the safety of their older family members and friends. The study underscores the need to consider historical dynamics and the ways they shape government opinions and trust, experiences of racial discrimination and socio-economic realities among racialized, immigrant populations.

Differences in perceptions and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination between vaccine hesitant and non-hesitant persons.

Acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccination becomes more critical as new variants continue to evolve and the United States (US) attempts to move from pandemic response to management and control. COVID-19 stands out in the unique way it has polarized patients and generated sustained vaccine hesitancy over time. We sought to understand differences in perceptions and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination between vaccine hesitant and non-hesitant patients, with the goal of informing communication and implementation strategies to increase uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in Veteran and non-Veteran communities. This qualitative study used interview data from focus groups conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the University of Utah; all focus groups were conducted using the same script March-July 2021. Groups included forty-six United States Veterans receiving care at 28 VA facilities across the country and 166 non-Veterans across Utah for a total of 36 one-hour focus groups. We identified perceptions and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination through qualitative analysis of focus group participant remarks, grouping connections with identified themes within domains developed based on the questions asked in the focus group guide. Responses suggest participant attitudes toward the COVID-19 vaccine were shaped primarily by vaccine attitude changes over time, impacted by perceived vaccine benefits, risks, differing sources of vaccine information and political ideology. Veterans appeared more polarized, being either largely non-hesitant, or hesitant, whereas non-Veterans had a wider range of hesitancy, with more participants identifying minor doubts and concerns about receiving the vaccine, or simply being altogether unsure about receiving it. Development of COVID-19 vaccine communication strategies in Veteran and non-Veteran communities should anticipate incongruous sources of information and explicitly target community differences in perceptions of risks and benefits associated with the vaccine to generate candid discussions and repair individuals' trust. We believe this could accelerate vaccine acceptance over time.

Exploring HPV vaccine knowledge, attitudes, barriers and information sources among parents, health professionals and teachers in Kazakhstan: a mixed-methods study protocol
