Bright source of narrowband polarization-entangled photons from a thick type-II ppKTP crystal.

We demonstrate a high brightness (∼2.36 × 105 pairs/s/mW) polarization-entangled photon-pair source at 800-nm via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a 3-cm long type-II ppKTP crystal pumped unidirectionally in a single-pass geometry. A high coincidences-to-accidentals ratio (CAR ∼ 1200) depicted by our source indicates a strong temporal correlation between the generated photon pairs. This correlated photon source is tunable from collinear to non-collinear emission of the photons and over a range of signal/idler wavelengths ∼8 - 9nm corresponding to a temperature range of 20-60°C. We measure a quantum state fidelity F>95% with the singlet entangled state |ψ -⟩=12(|H V⟩-|V H⟩) along with a violation of the CHSH-Bell's inequality by ∼485 standard deviations (S = 2.68 ± 0.0014).

Ultrabright polarization-entangled photon pair source for frequency-multiplexed quantum communication in free-space.

The distribution of entanglement via satellite links will drastically extend the reach of quantum networks. Highly efficient entangled photon sources are an essential requirement towards overcoming high channel loss and achieving practical transmission rates in long-distance satellite downlinks. Here we report on an ultrabright entangled photon source that is optimized for long-distance free-space transmission. It operates in a wavelength range that is efficiently detected with space-ready single photon avalanche diodes (Si-SPADs), and readily provides pair emission rates that exceed the detector bandwidth (i.e., the temporal resolution). To overcome this limitation, we demultiplex the photon flux into wavelength channels that can be handled by current single photon detector technology. This is achieved efficiently by using the spectral correlations due to hyper-entanglement in polarization and frequency as an auxiliary resource. Combined with recent demonstrations of space-proof source prototypes, these results pave the way to a broadband long-distance entanglement distribution network based on satellites.

Optical fiber polarization-entangled photon pair source using intermodal spontaneous four-wave mixing in the visible spectral band

The theoretical and experimental investigation results of the generation of the polarization-entangled photon pairs operating at visible wavelengths are reported. The generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs was based on intermodal spontaneous four-wave mixing (IM-SFWM) using standard step-index few-mode fiber. It was shown theoretically that several combinations of IM-SFWM processes could occur depending on spatial modes of a pump beam. A polarization-entangled photon pair source based on Sagnac loop incorporating a segment of few-mode fiber were then experimentally created. A two-photon interference fringe visibility of our implemented photon pair source were 91.7% and 88.8% in H/V bases and D/A bases, respectively. A quantum state tomography was also conducted to reconstruct the density matrix of the generated state with a fidelity to a maximum entangled state of 93.1%.

Experimental entanglement generation for quantum key distribution beyond 1 Gbit/s

Top-performance sources of photonic entanglement are an indispensable resource for many applications in quantum communication, most notably quantum key distribution. However, up to now, no source has been shown to simultaneously exhibit the high pair-creation rate, broad bandwidth, excellent state fidelity, and low intrinsic loss necessary for gigabit secure key rates. In this work, we present for the first time a source of polarization-entangled photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths that covers all these needs of real-world quantum-cryptographic applications, thus enabling unprecedented quantum-secure key rates of more than 1 Gbit/s. Our source is designed to optimally exploit state-of-the-art telecommunication equipment and detection systems. Any technological improvement of the latter would result in an even higher rate without modification of the source. We discuss the used wavelength-multiplexing approach, including its potential for multi-user quantum networks and its fundamental limitations. Our source paves the way for high-speed quantum encryption approaching present-day internet bandwidth.

Visible-wavelength polarization-entangled photon source for quantum communication and imaging

We present a polarization-entangled photon pair source operating in the visible light range around 532 nm. Employing a collinear crossed-crystal scheme with type-I degenerate phase matching in barium borate (BBO), our source achieves a brightness of 9.5 k pairs/s/mW and a quantum state fidelity of 98.3%, making it a candidate for integration in microscopes and make use of the advantages of mid-visible optimized single-photon detection technologies. In order to study potential applications, we present a trade-off between source brightness and polarization entanglement visibility and propose use cases for different filtering configurations of the source, capable of a brightness up to 1.23 M pairs/s/mW.

Direct generation of polarization-entangled photons from warm atomic ensemble

We experimentally realized a bright and robust polarization-entangled photon-pair source from Doppler-broadened atomic ensembles by exploiting the strong signal-idler polarization correlation. The photon pair is emitted from the cascade-type 5S1/2–5P3/2–5D5/2 transition of 87Rb. Without using an interferometric configuration, we robustly produce all four Bell states by applying the intrinsic polarization correlation achieved in a cascade-type atomic system. The coincidence count rate of the polarization-entangled photon pairs is measured as 10.0(1) kHz under a weak pump power of 20 μW. Our scheme enables the generation of a high rate of polarization-entangled photon pairs with a high fidelity of 0.933(2). We believe that our approach to realize bright and stable polarization-entangled photon-pair sources can contribute to the construction of practical scalable quantum networks based on atom–photon interactions.

Heralded entanglement distribution between two absorptive quantum memories.

Owing to the inevitable loss in communication channels, the distance of entanglement distribution is limited to approximately 100kilometres on the ground1. Quantum repeaters can circumvent this problem by using quantum memory and entanglement swapping2. As the elementary link of a quantum repeater, the heralded distribution of two-party entanglement between two remote nodes has only been realized with built-in-type quantum memories3-9. These schemes suffer from the trade-off between multiplexing capacity and deterministic properties and hence hinder the development of efficient quantum repeaters. Quantum repeaters based on absorptive quantum memories can overcome such limitations because they separate the quantum memories and the quantum light sources. Here we present an experimental demonstration of heralded entanglement between absorptive quantum memories. We build two nodes separated by 3.5metres, each containing a polarization-entangled photon-pair source and a solid-state quantum memory with bandwidth up to 1gigahertz. A joint Bell-state measurement in the middle station heralds the successful distribution of maximally entangled states between the two quantum memories with a fidelity of 80.4±2.2per cent (±1 standard deviation). The quantum nodes and channels demonstrated here can serve as an elementary link of a quantum repeater. Moreover, the wideband absorptive quantum memories used in the nodes are compatible with deterministic entanglement sources and can simultaneously support multiplexing, which paves the way for the construction of practical solid-state quantum repeaters and high-speed quantum networks.

Study on a polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on niobium-doped potassium titanyl phosphate

We investigate the high-purity polarization-entangled photon-pair generation in niobium-doped potassium titanyl phosphate (Nb:KTP). The technique is based on Type II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). Two kinds of Nb:KTPs with Nb-doping concentrations of 3.4 mol% and 7.5 mol% will be considered in each periodically poled and non-poled case. The properties of Type II SPDC, including the range of the beam propagation direction (or the spectral range of photons) and the corresponding effective nonlinearities and beam walk-offs, will be discussed in detail both theoretically and numerically. This is followed by a joint spectral analysis is followed to quantify the heralded-state spectral purities of the photon pairs generated by Type II SPDC. The results show that photon-pairs can be generated with high purities of 0.995–0.997 with proper pump filtering. We will also show that the spectral positions of photon pairs can be chosen from a wide range, including 1520.0 nm, 1582.4 nm, 1811.6–1837.4 nm, and 1998.6–2026.8 nm.

Broadband fiber-based entangled photon-pair source at telecom O-band.

In this Letter, we report a polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on type-II spontaneous parametric downconversion at telecom O-band in periodically poled silica fiber (PPSF). The photon-pair source exhibits more than 130 nm (∼24THz) emission bandwidth centered at 1306.6 nm. The broad emission spectrum results in a short biphoton correlation time, and we experimentally demonstrate a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference dip with a full width of 26.6 fs at half-maximum. Owing to the low birefringence of the PPSF, the biphotons generated from type-II SPDC are polarization-entangled over the entire emission bandwidth, with a measured fidelity to a maximally entangled state greater than 95.4%. The biphoton source provides the broadest bandwidth entangled biphotons at O-band to our knowledge.

Strategies for achieving high key rates in satellite-based QKD

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a pioneering quantum technology on the brink of widespread deployment. Nevertheless, the distribution of secret keys beyond a few 100 km at practical rates remains a major challenge. One approach to circumvent lossy terrestrial transmission of entangled photon pairs is the deployment of optical satellite links. Optimizing these non-static quantum links to yield the highest possible key rate is essential for their successful operation. We therefore developed a high-brightness polarization-entangled photon pair source and a receiver module with a fast steering mirror capable of satellite tracking. We employed this state-of-the-art hardware to distribute photons over a terrestrial free-space link with a distance of 143 km, and extracted secure key rates up to 300 bits per second. Contrary to fiber-based links, the channel loss in satellite downlinks is time-varying and the link time is limited to a few minutes. We therefore propose a model-based optimization of link parameters based on current channel and receiver conditions. This model and our field test will prove helpful in the design and operation of future satellite missions and advance the distribution of secret keys at high rates on a global scale.

Entanglement swapping with autonomous polarization-entangled photon pairs from a warm atomic ensemble.

Entanglement swapping forms a key concept in the realization of scalable quantum networks and large-scale quantum communication. For the practical implementation of entanglement swapping, completely autonomous entanglement sources and a joint Bell-state measurement (BSM) between two independent photons are essential. Here, we experimentally demonstrate entanglement swapping between two independent polarization-entangled photon-pair sources obtained via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a Doppler-broadened atomic ensemble of ${^{87}}{\rm Rb}$87Rb atoms. From the joint BSM, we estimate the ${\rm S}$S parameter in the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) form of Bell's inequality and confirm the violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality by ${\rm S}={2.32} \pm {0.07}$S=2.32±0.07 with 4.5 standard deviations. We believe that this work is an important step toward realizing practical scalable quantum networks.

Demonstration of a polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on phase-modulated PPLN

We develop and demonstrate a source of polarization-entangled photon pairs using spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in domain-engineered, periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) at telecom wavelengths. Pumped at 775 nm, this domain-engineered type-II SPDC source produces non-degenerate signal and idler pairs at 1530 nm and 1569 nm. Because of birefringence, the photon pair with horizontally polarized signal and vertically polarized idler has a different phasematching condition than the pair with vertically polarized signal and horizontally polarized idler. Using phase-modulation of the domain structure, we produced a crystal that can simultaneously generate both states in a distributed fashion throughout a single crystal. Performing SPDC using this aperiodically poled crystal, we observed polarization entanglement visibility above 93%. We compare the phase-modulated crystal to other aperiodic structures, including dual-periodically-poled and interlaced biperiodic structures.

Compact polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on a dual-periodically-poled Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide.

We present an experimental realization of a compact and reliable way to build a nondegenerate polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on a dual-periodically-poled $ {\rm Ti}:{{\rm LiNbO}_3} $Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide, which is in the telecommunication window and compatible with the fiber quantum networks. The dual-periodic structure allows two inherently concurrent quasiphase-matching spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes pumped by a single laser beam, hence enabling our source to be compact and stable. We show that our source has a high brightness of $ B = 1.22{\rm } \times {\rm }{10^7}\;{\rm pairs}/(\rm s \times mW \times nm) $B=1.22×107pairs/(s×mW×nm). With quantum state tomography, we estimate an entanglement fidelity of $ 0.945 \pm 0.003 $0.945±0.003. A violation of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality with $ S = 2.75 \pm 0.03 $S=2.75±0.03 is also demonstrated.

Polarization-Entangled Photons from a Warm Atomic Ensemble Using a Sagnac Interferometer.

We report a polarization-entangled photon-pair source obtained via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a Doppler-broadened atomic ensemble of ^{87}Rb atoms using a Sagnac interferometer. Collective two-photon coherence occurs in the Doppler-broadened ladder-type atomic system with bidirectional counterpropagating two-photon resonant pump and coupling fields; hence, polarization-entangled photon pairs are collectively radiated in the phase-matched direction. Without phase stabilization of the interferometry for polarization entanglement, we robustly produce all four Bell states via a polarization Sagnac configuration. The brightness, stability, and temporal purity advantages provided by our polarization-entangled SFWM photon-pair source have very important applications in the context of a practical scalable quantum network.

Pulsed Sagnac source of polarization-entangled photon pairs in telecommunication band

We report a source of polarization-entangled photon pairs in the 1550-nm telecommunication band, which is based on non-collinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal pumped by picosecond pulses. This source is realized utilizing a polarization-based Sagnac interferometer employing a type-0 non-collinear quasi-phase-matching configuration. Polarization entanglement is verified through measurement of the polarization-correlation interference fringes with visibility >96% and by testing the experimental violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) form of Bell’s inequality. The CHSH-Bell parameter S is found to be 2.72 ± 0.04, with 18 standard deviations from the statistical uncertainty.

Toward a reconfigurable quantum network enabled by a broadband entangled source

We present a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of a reconfigurable entanglement distribution scheme utilizing a poled fiber-based source of broadband polarization-entangled photon pairs and dense wavelength-division multiplexing. A large bandwidth (> 90 nm, centered at 1555 nm) and highly spectrally correlated nature of the entangled source can be exploited to allow for the generation of more than 25 frequency-conjugate entangled pairs when aligned to the standard 200 GHz ITU grid. In this work, three frequency-conjugate entangled pairs are used to demonstrate quantum key distribution, with the wavelength-selective switching done manually. The entangled pairs are delivered over 40 km of actual fiber, and an estimated secure key rate of up to 20 bits/s per bi-party is obtained.

Polarization Entanglement by Time-Reversed Hong-Ou-Mandel Interference.

Sources of entanglement are an enabling resource in quantum technology, and pushing the limits of generation rate and quality of entanglement is a necessary prerequisite towards practical applications. Here, we present an ultrabright source of polarization-entangled photon pairs based on time-reversed Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. By superimposing four pair-creation possibilities on a polarization beam splitter, pairs of identical photons are separated into two spatial modes without the usual requirement for wavelength distinguishability or noncollinear emission angles. Our source yields high-fidelity polarization entanglement and high pair-generation rates without any requirement for active interferometric stabilization, which makes it an ideal candidate for a variety of applications, in particular those requiring indistinguishable photons.

Turn-key diode-pumped all-fiber broadband polarization-entangled photon source

In this letter, we report a compact, low-power laser diode-pumped, all-fiber polarization-entangled photon pair source based on periodically-poled silica fiber technology. The all-fiber source offers room-temperature, alignment-free, turn-key operation, with low power consumption, and is packaged into a fanless, portable enclosure. It features a broad biphoton spectrum of more than 100nm with a concurrence that is greater than 0.96 for polarization entanglement. The source is stable over at least 10 hours of continuous operation, achieving coincidence-to-accidental ratios of more than 2000 consistently over this time period.

High fidelity field stop collection for polarization-entangled photon pair sources

We present an experimental demonstration of a bright and high fidelity polarization entangled photon pair source. The source is constructed using two critically phase matched β-Barium Borate crystals with parallel optical axes, and photon pairs are collected after filtering with a circular field stop. Near-unity fidelities are obtained with detected pair rates exceeding 100 000 pairs/s mW, approaching the brightness of practical quasi-phase matched entangled photon sources. We find that the brightness scales linearly with the crystal length. We present models supporting the experimental data and propose strategies for further improvement. The source design is a promising candidate for emerging quantum applications outside of laboratory environments.
