Economic influences of agriculture production and import mechanisms through commodity market in the nepalese context

Agriculture production not only manage food and domestic needs rather enhance nation’s economy. Nepalese production is relying from neighbours through import due to insufficiency. This study design to analyse the impact of agricultural cereal production and import scenario in the Nepalese context. A mixed method approach, both Qualitative and Quantitative data utilized for this Doctoral study-based paper, Farmers of all Seven Provinces samples with HHs interview and secondary data of agriculture and Custom data used. The study was conducted from January to June 2023. The findings revealed the major cereal crop production from own like paddy, maize, wheat and millet are limited for some season. In addition, import from India shifting large economy to India through import. The agriculture production meeting domestic needs like seasonal food and market stock. Whereas seeds, input and mechanization dependency largely depending on neighbours due to no manufacturing of own. The study concluded as agriculture production is a major source of income and food for Nepal. Limited month of sufficiency at the local production bounded Nepal depends on import. The cause was found as lack of sufficient input system, low priority of agriculture from all sectors, diversity and low-political priority. Food Diversity and local production enhancement is the ultimately way out to deal with this issue.

Remittance in Nepalese Economy: Trends, Contributions, and Policy Implications

Remittances are a major source of foreign income for developing countries such as Nepal. Remittance occupies nearly one fourth of national GDP. It has been a dominant source of foreign currency for the last decades. In this connection, the aim of this research paper is to examine the current trends and contribution of remittance in Nepalese economy. This is a review-based research paper having descriptive research design. Secondary data are used to accumulate the information and describe the result depending on the research objective. The result revealed that the contribution of remittance to GDP is high in Nepal among South Asian countries. Remittance and GDP revealed a positive relationship. Largely remittance is utilized to meet consumption needs rather than investing in productive sectors. Government should provide a favorable environment in addition to suitable policy for investing remittance money in productive sector for long term economic sustainability.

Biophysical and socioeconomic characterization of Agewmariam experimental watershed in Northern Ethiopia: insights and management options.

Watershed characterization is essential for sustainable watershed management and effective resource utilization, particularly in assessing changes resulting from interventions. This study investigates the biophysical and socio-economic conditions of the Agewmariam watershed, aiming to develop land capability and suitability maps while identifying viable management options. Biophysical data, including land slope, soil properties, erosion severity, stoniness/rockiness cover, and vegetation cover, were collected through field surveys and analyzed using overlay analysis in ArcGIS. Socio-economic data, encompassing population demographics, income, and expenditure, were gathered via individual interviews, complete census, and focus group discussions and summarized using descriptive statistics. The study identified 259 households with an average family size of 4 and a demographic dependency ratio of 96.6%. The major sources of income are crop production and livestock rearing supplemented by casual labor and food aid. The average farmland holding size is 0.5ha, with sorghum, barley, teff, and wheat as the dominant crops. The watershed is characterized by six land capability classes (classes II, III, IV, VI, VII, and VIII). The suitability analysis indicated that the watershed is not currently suitable for wheat and teff crops unless physical, chemical, and biological management improvements are implemented. The study revealed that the major limiting factors for land capability and suitability were slope, erosion severity, stoniness, soil organic matter, and soil texture. The socio-economic characterization enhanced awareness about the local socio-economic condition, informing appropriate planning and management strategies. The study recommends intensive soil and water conservation intervention, afforestation on hillsides, changing the land use system, and the addition of organic matter and fertilizers to enhance land capability and suitability for sustainable agricultural practices.

Fungicidal Potentials of Leaf and Bark Extracts of Bryophyllum pinnatum on Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) Seed Fungi

In Nigeria, Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp) is an important grain legume which besides being a food crop serves as a major source of income for rural households. The action of pathogens on stored seeds causes huge post-harvest and economic losses to cowpea farmers in Nigeria. This research was aimed at isolating and identifying the spoilage pathogens of cowpea seed and testing the potentiality of ethanol extracts of Bryophyllum pinnatum on the isolates. Spoilt cowpea seed samples were purchased from different markets in Anambra State. They were transported to Alpha Research Laboratory, Awka in sterile polythene bags for microbial isolation. The spoilage organisms were isolated from the seeds through microbial culture. The media used for the isolation were Sabouraud Dextrose Agar and Potato Dextrose Agar. Pathogenic fungi were isolated from the spoilt cowpea seeds. The findings indicated that Aspergillus aculeatus, Fusarium solani, Penicillium citrinum, Rhizopus stolonifer, and Aspergillus flavus were present. The pathogenicity test also showed that the above organisms were responsible for cowpea spoilage. These isolates were tested for their in-vitro antifungal activity against the leaf and bark extracts of Bryophyllum Pinnatum. The antifungal activity ethanol extracts of Bryophyllum pinnatum on the isolated microorganisms were investigated using the disc method. Three different concentrations (25%, 50%, 100%) of extracts were used for the test. Fusarium solani showed the highest percentage of inhibition with antifungal medication while Penicillium citrinum showed the least percentage of inhibition with antifungal medication. The antifungal potential of Bryophyllum pinnatum extract on spoilage pathogens of stored cocoyam corms encourages more research on the active ingredient of the plant for easy use by farmers as alternative to commercial/ synthetic fungicides.

Drifting Away from the Roots: Genderfluidity as Diola’s Mangrove Fishing Strategies in Three Island-Villages of Northern Guinea-Bissau

AbstractBiodiversity loss, habitat degradation, globalization, and societal transformations are challenging rural, and especially coastal communities in Guinea-Bissau where mangrove-dependent livelihoods are exposed to increased vulnerability. The Diola, traditional farmer-fishermen of the northern island-villages, have witnessed swift societal changes following the country’s economic liberalization, climate change, and youth migration from rural areas. Despite historically being a secondary subsistence activity with more predefined gender roles rooted in tradition, mangrove fishing has become a major source of cash income. Yet, women’s mangrove fishing contributions are still overlooked, resulting in general assumptions of static female fishing identities with limited control over their income. We present three case studies of Diola women’s involvement in mangrove fishing through a mixed method approach that combines qualitative techniques and household surveys conducted between 2017 and 2023. Specifically, we explore: (1) diverging societal coping strategies and livelihood developments in three Diola villages; (2) the primary drivers behind village-specific societal transformations; (3) social dynamics and female roles in mangrove fishing-related activities and village decision-making; and (4) the political ecology of interventions. Our findings underscore the complexity of gender-fluid small-scale fishing strategies as female roles beyond fish trade defy cultural generalizations. Contemporary Diola women make autonomous personal and work choices that meet their current needs and add to their household budget to face new welfare demands. Inclusive resource governance needs more gender-specific data for meaningfully implemented interventions adapted to local circumstances, enabling an active participation of all genders in conservation practices and development.

OLG Model Analysis of Delayed Retirement and Social Pension Effects on Family-Based Elderly Care in China

Driven by the traditional concept of “Raising Children to Ensure Old-age Security”, China’s elderly care system has long relied on a family-centered approach, with intergenerational financial transfers (IFTs) serving as a major source of income for the elderly. However, as China’s population ages, the government’s plan to implement delayed retirement from 2025, along with pension reforms, is expected to reshape family-based eldercare and intergenerational financial dynamics. This paper employs an Overlapping Generation (OLG) model, grounded in unified growth theory, which incorporates a delayed retirement policy under the constraint of pension fund balance to examine the impact of adjusting the pension contribution rates (PCRs) and raising retirement age (RA) on IFT rates. The research findings indicate a negative correlation between RA, PCR, and IFT. Both policies have the potential to alleviate the burden on family-based eldercare. The integrated implementation of these two policies not only creates room for a phased reduction in pension contribution rates but also enables the effective utilization of senior workers’ expertise and experience.

Reforming the IMF Surcharge Rate Policy to Avoid Procyclical Lending

Abstract The International Monetary Fund (IMF) levies ‘surcharges’ or extra fees beyond the normal borrowing costs on member countries that either draw “sufficiently large” amounts of IMF credit to mitigate balance of payments constraints, or that maintain their credit exposure with the institution for “sufficiently long” periods of time. Such surcharges have become increasingly important: 10 countries paid surcharges in 2020. Now, 22 countries are subject to IMF surcharges, and revenues from surcharges between 2020 and 2023 have reached about $6.4 billion, just as countries are struggling to recover from their balance of payments issues amidst multiple shocks, such as COVID-19, climate change, war, and advanced economy interest rate changes. Reportedly designed to discourage the overuse of Fund resources and to ensure the financial soundness of the IMF’s own balance sheet, in recent years surcharges have come under scrutiny for two reasons. First, such surcharges are inherently pro-cyclical as they increase the burden of debt payments at exactly the time when a member country needs counter-cyclical and low-cost financing, contravening the very rationale of the IMF. Secondly, IMF surcharges have now become among the largest sources of revenue for the IMF, creating a perverse situation whereby the most economically disadvantaged member countries are a major source of income for Fund operations. This paper reviews the rationale for IMF surcharges, evaluates their impacts on member country economies and on the IMF business model, and presents and evaluates various proposals for IMF surcharge reform.

Evaluating Socio-Economic and Environmental (SEE) Impact of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) of Gemstones on Livelihood in the Ijero-Ekiti Community, Nigeria

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) has experienced explosive growth in recent years due to the rising value of mineral prices and the increasing difficulty of earning a living from agriculture and other rural activities, in that regard the Gem Mining Industry (GMI) has come to be one of the major sources of income and employment for the country, especially the local people of Ijero LGA in Ekiti State. Artisanal and Small-Scale mining effects in the state were studied using structured questionnaires. This research draws on primary data collected from households and artisanal miners. The questionnaire was designed to answer the following questions about the socio-economic impacts of small-scale tourmaline mining on local community livelihoods in Ijero-Ekiti, furthermore, the research employs of a descriptive survey design, to understand the effects of mining in the study area. Results indicate that overdependence on mining and poor diversification of livelihood options has hindered the development of rural communities. The equitable distribution of employment opportunities and revenue from small-scale mining remains a challenge for sustainable local development.

More the merrier? influence of mango orchards on the composition of the reptile communities of the lateritic plateaus, Maharashtra, India

AbstractChange in land‐use patterns affects a landscape by changing the composition of local flora and fauna. The lateritic plateaus in Konkan are one such example of this rapid land‐use change. Although these plateaus are rich in endemic flora and fauna, they are considered as “wastelands” due to lack of woody vegetation and thus, are subjected to various land‐uses. Mango cultivation in this region has become a major source of income due to its Alphonso variety of mangoes. Hence, over the last few decades, many plateaus have been converted into mango orchards. However, how the conversion of plateaus to mango orchards has affected species composition of different groups of organisms remains unclear. In the present study, we sampled the lateritic plateaus and plateaus converted into mango orchards in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, to investigate the response of the reptile communities. We observed more species heterogeneity in the orchards compared to the unaltered sites. Moreover, it appeared that there was a species turnover when the plateaus were converted into orchards. The generalist and widespread species such as agamids and skinks and very few specialist species were comparatively more abundant in the orchards. On the contrary, the plateaus without orchards harbored more specialist species such as Hemidactylus albofasciatus (n = 62, in unaltered sites vs. n = 5 in the orchards), Echis carinatus (n = 15 in unaltered sites and none in the orchards) and Ophisops jerdonii (n = 45 in unaltered site vs. n = 12 in the orchards) compared to the generalist species.

Analysis of agricultural technology adoption: the use of improved maize seeds and its determinants in Ethiopia, evidence from Eastern Amhara

Agriculture is the major source of income and employment creation for majority of least developed countries. Ethiopia as one of least developed countries of sub-Saharan Africa, majority of its citizen’s livelihood is predominantly dependent on agricultural products, more specifically on the production of cereal crops (Alemayehu et al. in Adv Crop Sci Technol 6(1):1–9, 2018). This study is conducted to identify the determinants of household to adopt and use improved maize seed, one of highly cultivated cereal crops in Eastern Amhara of Ethiopia. The data used in this study are secondary data collected by the agriculture office of Amhara regional state from 3864 household farmers living in the study area in 2022 fiscal year. To address the objective of the study, both descriptive and econometric methods of data analysis are applied. Because of the binary nature of adoption to be either adaptor or non-adaptor, probit regression model is applied. The probit model result shows that being male-headed household, rural credit provision, access to irrigation and the use of fertilizers affect the tendency of adopting improved maize seeds are positively related, while total arable land size owned by farmers negatively affects adoption status. Based on this result, the researcher recommends that government and other institutions should be invited to facilitate and directly involve in providing credit, irrigation, and fertilizers in the study area.

[Purpose] This paper analyzes the impact of financial ratios on the financial performance of two different types of service industries, called Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 consists of maritime transport, air transport, hotel and car rental industries, which depend on real estate as a major source of income, while Group 2 consists of travel agencies, trading companies and information service industries, which do not depend on real estate as a major source of income. [Methodology] This study primarily analyzed 12 representative financial ratios, divided into four categories：profitability ratios, stability ratios, growth ratios, and activity ratios. Secondary data based on the Value Search from 2015 to 2019, was analyzed, and a multiple regression model was employed using SPSS 26.0. [Findings] The analysis showed that for Group 1, focusing on increasing low asset turnover with a relatively low debt ratio is a good way to improve a company’s profitability；for Group 2, focusing on relatively high asset turnover with relatively high debt ratio can improve a company’s profitability. [Implications] The financial performance of service industry was impacted by different types of financial ratios according to real estate dependence as major source of income.

Factors Affecting Technical Efficiency of Coffee Producers: The Case Dale Woreda, Sidama Region, Ethiopia

Coffee is the major source of income for smallholder farmers and is a leading export crop for Ethiopia. Even though a great proportion of coffee production comes from smallholder farmers with farm sizes below two hectares, productivity in these farms remained very low. To identify the causes of low productivity this study identified the technical efficiency level of smallholder coffee farmers and the factors that influence technical efficiency in coffee production in Dale Woreda, Sidama Region, Ethiopia using the stochastic frontier approach. In addition, this study attempts to determine whether the agricultural and some of the socio-economic characteristics of farmers can influence the efficiency of their technical efficiency coffee production. By exploiting the information that was gathered in a survey of 150 farmers selected randomly from three kebeles using stratified random sampling in the woreda, these farmers' technical efficiency was estimated using a trans-long-type stochastic frontier model and two-limit Tobit model. The mean technical efficiency of the study area is 65.43%. The results suggest that, factors like the land cover, labor in hours, compost used as well as their cross product and the interaction effects of labor with sufficient compost used, labor with proper capital-labor force, and minimum cost for agricultural equipment and composite with proper capital significant determinants of coffee technical efficiency in the area. Furthermore, variables like educational status, age of the coffee tree, membership of cooperative associations, size of livestock holding, presence of additional off-farm incomes, and age of household head are significant predictors of the technical efficiency of farmers in the study area. Thus, by improving their education, improving the frequency of extension service, increasing livestock holdings, improving membership in cooperative associations, and replacing the aged coffee tree, someone can improve his/her technical efficiency directly and coffee production indirectly.

Land suitability mapping for groundnut production in southern region of Borno state, Nigeria

Groundnut (Arachis hypogea) is a leguminous oilseed crop cultivated in the semi-arid and subtropical region of the world. In West Africa, groundnut plays an important role. This includes food production for household consumption, cash crops, sources of employment, and incomes for smallholders in rural households. In Nigeria, it was among the major sources of income before the oil boom. Some of the activities surrounding its production are the development of commerce, employment, and foreign exchange. This study aims to identify the most suitable sites for groundnut production in the Southern Borno Region, Nigeria with the objectives to identify areas of groundnut cultivation within the southern Borno region and to conduct a suitability analysis for groundnut production within the study area. Primary and secondary data and questionnaires were used in this study. Climatic data such as Temperature, Rainfall, Precipitation, Wind speed, Relative Humidity, Soil, and Topographic data were also used. The parameters were overlaid using the weighted overlaid operation in ArcGIS 10.3 and ranked from the most suitable to the least suitable for wheat production within the study region. The result of the study revealed that groundnut is cultivated in all parts of Southern Borno Region. It revealed that areas around Askira/Uba, Chibok and Damboa are the most suitable site for groundnut cultivation. This study demonstrates the capabilities of Remote Sensing and GIS Systems for multi-criteria analysis in Land Suitability Mapping. It is recommended that farmers around Askira/Uba, Chibok and Damboa be encouraged to cultivate more groundnuts.

Agroforestry status, services, and its role in climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration under semi-arid conditions

Agroforestry systems play a dynamic role in sequestering atmospheric carbon to keep the environment safe and provide various benefits such as food, fodder, fuel wood, increased farm income, biodiversity maintenance, and soil conservation. The present study assessed agroforestry's status, services, and role in climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration in three districts of Punjab, Pakistan: Chiniot, Faisalabad, and Sargodha. In the current study, the administrative geographical division, which is the village, union council, Tehsil, and district, was considered for sampling. Field visits were carried out in 175 rural union councils of 14 Tehsils of selected districts to collect socio-economic data through validated questionnaires and tree inventory data to estimate carbon stocks. Research results revealed that most of the respondents in the study area were middle-aged, had about 8–10 years of education, and had less than 5 hectares of landholding. Nearly 34 % to 36 % of farmers earned 359.59 to 1438.37 USD annually, with farming as a major income source. Linear planting was the dominant form of agroforestry, with P. deltoides, D. sissoo, and E. camaldulensis being major tree species. The current number of trees ha-1 was 19–25, while the potential trees ha-1 could be 57–72 in the study area. Across 14 tehsils of selected districts, the maximum total tree carbon stock (8.97 Mg ha-1) and total tree CO2 sequestration (32.21 Mg ha-1) was estimated in Tehsil Lalian of district Chiniot while the lowest total tree carbon stock (1.82 Mg ha-1) and total tree CO2 sequestration (7.34 Mg ha-1) were estimated in Tehsil Faisalabad of district Faisalabad. The results of this study highlight that the eco-friendly advantages of agroforestry can be used to improve approvals and strategies on the selection and management of tree species, along with land use systems for designing effective carbon sequestration projects in Pakistan.

Impacts on Aquatic Life for Indiscriminate Exploitation of Baby Shrimp (P. monodon) in the Coastal Area, South-Western Region of Bangladesh

Fishing for baby shrimp (Penaeus monodon post-larvae) is a major source of income for most fishermen in the coastal regions of the southwestern part of Bangladesh during during July, 2022 to June, 2023. These post-larvae collectors lack financial security and are socially regressive. Other aquatic species are destroyed by the indiscriminate exploitation of baby shrimp for aquaculture. According to the present study, about 98-99% of other larvae are destroyed to catch nearly 1-2% of indiscriminate exploitation baby shrimp in our study area where averagely 0.35% Penaeus indicus, 0.06% Penaeus merguiensis, 0.037% Metapenaeus Monoceros, 3.58% Other shrimp, 6.59% Fin-fish larvae, 5.95% Crab larvae, and 82.42% Small organisms. Actually, the government of Bangladesh already has declared a ban period and illegal baby shrimp catching. But to maintain the poor fisherman's livelihood, they are doing that continuously. Furthermore, because wild baby shrimp are said to have a far higher survival rate than baby shrimp raised in hatcheries, farmers prefer wild baby shrimp. For thousands of Bangladeshi coastal landless and jobless poor people, wild prawn baby shrimp fishing has created employment opportunities. This study describes the impact of wild baby shrimp fishing in coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Socio-economic aspects and farming practices of goats in Southern Tunisia.

This study aims to describe socio-economic aspects, farming practices and production limitations of goats by surveying 53 farms holding 5507 head in the regions of Tataouine-Tunisia. It was revealed that goats represented a major source of income for most of the producers (66.1%). Approximately 35.8% of the farmers had not received formal education, with the majority (56.6%) having been engaged in goat breeding for over 10 years. Additionally, 50.9% of stockholders relied on technical knowledge for animal breeding. The investigated herds were mostly (97.4%) comprised of local goat breeds. The most common management system was semi-intensive (49.1%) based on grazing in communal rangelands and supplementation with agricultural by-products and concentrates. The fertility, fecundity and prolificacy rates were 91.3 ± 8.3, 109.8 ± 19.5 and 127.0 ± 15.4%, respectively. The main reasons for keeping goats were their major contribution to the income by the sale of male kids and the provision of milk for home consumption. Sale of male kids at an age of 7.7 months was practiced mostly via intermediaries (94.3%) and rarely directly to butchers and markets (5.7%). The total amount of milk produced on each farm was on average 15.1l/day, and more than half of farmers (54.7%) consumed goat milk as part of their daily diet. The majority (71.7%) of respondents locally processed milk into Leben, Rayeb and cheese because the goat milk market faced constraints in the Tataouine regions, mainly in terms insufficient milk production and low consumer acceptability. Goats contribute to the income source in rural zones of southern Tunisia, where their breeding is mainly for the purpose of meat sale and the provision of milk for home consumption. The development of goat milk market can represent an added value to this sector.

Socio-Economic Characterization, Identification and Prioritization of Major Constraints and Potentials in Gara Ebanu Community Watershed in Sululta District, Ethiopia

Baseline characterization builds necessary foundation for the plan and obtains proper information for elective planning, implementation and monitoring of the research and development endeavors. The objective of the study was to document baseline information on socio-economic for planning and impact monitoring and to identify and document major socio-economic constraints and potential in the watershed. A total of 62 sample households were selected randomly from all farmers engaged in farming activities in the watershed. The average inorganic fertilizer (NPS and Urea) used in the watershed were 75 kg/ha and 75 kg/ha respectively. The response of the respondents showed that the average yield obtained in the watershed was about 10 qt/ha for barley, 12 qt/ha for wheat, 5 qt/ha for faba bean and field pea 6 qt/ha. The major livestock feed type in the watershed were crop residue (93.5%) followed by hay making (91.9%), grazing in the field (80.6%), local beverage by-products (72.6%), concentrates of different type (67.7%), green feed (50%), stubble grazing (41.9%) and improved forage (14.5%). The result of survey shows that the major income sources of the farmers living in the watershed were livestock production (77.4%) followed by crop production (45.2%) and off-farm activities (25.8%). About 71% of the households have encountered high cost and shortage of agricultural inputs followed by low crop productivity (19.4%), crop disease (8.1%) and existence storage pests (1.6%) were the common in the watershed. In the watershed, high cost of agricultural inputs, low crop productivity, crop disease, shortage of animal feed and fodder, inflation, lack of employment opportunity and other income source were addressed as the highest priority issues by the community that are contributing to the crop productivity reductions and low level of their livelihood in the watershed. By considering the addressed problem related to crop production, livestock production and socio-economic, the interventions on introduction and demonstration of improved and high yielding crop varieties that are resistant or tolerant to the already existing and emerging pests to increase production and productivity of crops should be done. In general, immediate short-term actions should be taken particularly participatory integrated watershed management were recommended.

Prevalence and risk factors of food insecurity among Syrian refugees in Türkiye

BackgroundAlthough Türkiye (Turkey) hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees, studies on food insecurity are limited. This study examined the prevalence and risk factors of food insecurity among Syrian refugees living in Istanbul, which has the highest number of refugees in Türkiye.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted among Syrian refugees in Istanbul between September 2021 and March 2022. The main income earners of 103 households were interviewed by a research dietitian, with the assistance of an Arabic speaking interpreter through hour-long face-to-face. Data on sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, nationality, marital status, educational status, the family income, the major source of family income, and the number of family members living in the household etc.) and household food insecurity status were collected. Household food insecurity status was assessed with the eighteen-item Household Food Security Survey Module.ResultsThe household food insecurity rate was 90.3%, and those of adults and children were 88.4% and 84.8%, respectively. It was observed that family income level was significantly associated with food insecurity. A one-unit increase in monthly income increased food security by 0.02 times (p < 0.001). The number of employed refugees in the food security group was higher than that in the food insecurity group (p = 0.018). A significant difference was found in the rate of occupation type of the major income earner between the groups (p = 0.046).ConclusionsHigh rates of food insecurity, particularly severe food insecurity, were found among Syrian refugees living in Istanbul. While more research is warranted to explore the root causes and efficacy of the current support system, it requires the immediate attention of policymakers at the national and international levels to implement effective policies and interventions.

Relevance of IPR in Small Businesses

Small businesses in India have always been one of the major occupations in rural as well as urban terrain and they are major source of income for the middle class group. As urbanization has increased the demand for the small services like grocery shops, bakeries, vegetable shops, laundry shops, juice centers, sweet shops, small hotels etc. Majorly the urban population is a mix of all the classes of people but a considerable portion is occupied by the middle and low income group, which has resulted in requirement of small services, and retail shops. As of a result of which the small businesses mushroom in the different localities, in different sizes so that they can cater to all the segments of consumers. Small business organizations contribute to the economy significantly by distributing the finished goods to the ultimate consumers, and they also create jobs in smaller units. The large business organizations contribute to economy by creating jobs in a bulk, economies of scale. The large scale organizations have the accessibility to hire legal professionals like legal advisers and naturally they give the suggestions on legal aspects for a smooth conduct of the business. In this context large or medium sized organizations have proximity to legal protection for their inventions, design, copyrights, trademarks etc, and they consciously protect their rights by patents or trademark and so on. In this article we have made an attempt to understand the extent of application of IPR in small and micro businesses.

Is the Iberian lynx a hunters’ ally? a case study from a reintroduced population in Portugal

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is one of the most endangered felids in the world, and a high proportion of its populations occur in hunting grounds managed for red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) and wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), both game species of high socio-economic value and the latter a key prey species for the lynx. In this case study from south-eastern Portugal, we evaluated the game management practices, the abundance of partridges and rabbits (expressed as Kilometric Abundance Index), and the occurrence of mesocarnivores in four hunting grounds, two with and two without breeding lynx. In all grounds game management was conducted but in those where lynx occurred, full-time gamekeepers were employed and hunting was the major source of income. The results showed that grounds with breeding lynx had higher KAI values for partridges and rabbits, together with reduced mesocarnivores occurrence (particularly red fox Vulpes vulpes and stone marten Martes foina), compared to those without breeding lynx. Our results confirm that lynx occurrence fits within the management traits of those hunting grounds in Iberia aiming to increase partridges and rabbits for sustainable hunting, as they act as ‘natural’ gamekeepers. This could be considered as a ‘win-win’ situation; successful for lynx’s establishment and small game conservation.
