Reply to “Comment on ‘Observation of annual modulation induced by γ rays from (α,γ) reactions at the Soudan Underground Laboratory' ”

Annual modulation of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays from $(\ensuremath{\alpha},\ensuremath{\gamma})$ reactions induced by the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ activity of radon and its daughters was reported by Tiwari, Zhang, Mei, and Cushman (TZMC). While Mohr does not contest the measurements themselves, he has commented that unrealistic $(\ensuremath{\alpha},\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections were used in the analysis of the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray flux, and thus the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray fluxes calculated by TZMC are not reliable. We demonstrate that the $(\ensuremath{\alpha},\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections obtained from talys include the energy-broadened cross sections for discrete states in the high-energy tail of the spectra, which are required in order to compare with the angle-integrated and double-differential spectra obtained from a liquid scintillator detector with an energy resolution of only $\ensuremath{\approx}15%$. A comparison with varying ``elwidth'' shows that cross sections indeed are reliable within the energy region (4 to 10 MeV) reported by TZMC, especially for the dominant contribution, which is the aluminum wall of the detector. Any differences in the $(\ensuremath{\alpha},\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections for $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ at the level detailed by Mohr will have negligible effect on the final flux.

Tiwari {\it et al.}\ have identified an annual modulation of the $\gamma$-ray flux at the Soudan Underground Laboratory which is strongly correlated to the radon concentration. The $\gamma$-ray flux results from ($\alpha$,$\gamma$) reactions which are induced by the $\alpha$ activity of radon and its daughters. Unfortunately, the quantitative analysis of the $\gamma$-ray flux is based on unrealistic ($\alpha$,$\gamma$) cross sections, and thus the calculated $\gamma$-ray fluxes are not reliable.

Cryocooled cold trap system for the SuperCDMS dilution refrigerator

Operating 6,800 feet underground at the SNOLAB facility in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, the dilution refrigerator-cooled SuperCDMS SNOLAB (Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Laboratory) experiment has been designed for maximum cryogenic up-time and remote operations. A key element in achieving these goals is a pair cold traps in the helium circulation stream of the dilution refrigerator; the first operating near liquid nitrogen temperatures and the second operating near liquid helium temperatures. Previous experience with the CDMS experiment, located underground at the Soudan Under-ground Laboratory, has given significant operational experience with dilution refrigerator cold traps and has solidified the demand of a system of dual cold traps. Unlike the CDMS-era system, the new SuperCDMS system will feature a cryocooler powered liquid nitrogen re-liquefying system (as opposed to regular under-ground re-filling of cold trap dewars using portable nitrogen dewars) and a cryogen-free 4 K cold trap, which eliminates the need for a bath of liquid helium.

Atmospheric charged K/pi ratio and measurement of muon annual modulation with a liquid scintillation detector at Soudan

We report a measurement of muon annual modulation in a 12-l liquid scintillation detector with a live-time of more than 4 years at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Muon minimum ionization in the detector is identified by its observed pulse shape and large energy deposition. The measured muon rate in the detector is 28.69pm 2.09 muons per day with a modulation amplitude of (2.64pm 0.07)% and a phase at Jul 22 pm 36.2 days. This annual modulation is correlated with the variation of the effective atmospheric temperature in the stratosphere. The correlation coefficient, alpha _{T}, is determined to be 0.898 pm 0.025. This can be interpreted as a measurement of the atmospheric charged kaon to pion (K/pi ) ratio of 0.094^{+0.044}_{-0.061} for E_{p} > 7 TeV, consistent with the measurement from the MINOS far detector. To further constrain the value of K/pi ratio, a Geant4 simulation of the primary cosmic-ray protons with energy up to 100 TeV is implemented to study the correlation of K/pi ratio and the muon annual modulation for muon energy greater than 0.5 TeV. We find out that a charged K/pi ratio of 0.1598, greater than the upper bound (0.138) from this work at the production point 30 km above the Earth surface in the stratosphere cannot induce muon annual modulation at the depth of Soudan.

Energy loss due to defect formation from 206Pb recoils in SuperCDMS germanium detectors

The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory studied energy loss associated with defect formation in germanium crystals at mK temperatures using in situ 210Pb sources. We examine the spectrum of 206Pb nuclear recoils near its expected 103 keV endpoint energy and determine an energy loss of (6:08 ± 0:18)%, which we attribute to defect formation. From this result and using TRIM simulations, we extract the first experimentally determined average displacement threshold energy of 19.7−0.5+0.6 eV for germanium. This has implications for the analysis thresholds of future germanium-based dark matter searches.

Low-mass dark matter search with CDMSlite

The SuperCDMS experiment is designed to directly detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) that may constitute the dark matter in our Galaxy. During its operation at the Soudan Underground Laboratory, germanium detectors were run in the CDMSlite mode to gather data sets with sensitivity specifically for WIMPs with masses <10 GeV/c2. In this mode, a higher detector-bias voltage is applied to amplify the phonon signals produced by drifting charges. This paper presents studies of the experimental noise and its effect on the achievable energy threshold, which is demonstrated to be as low as 56 eVee (electron equivalent energy). The detector-biasing configuration is described in detail, with analysis corrections for voltage variations to the level of a few percent. Detailed studies of the electric-field geometry, and the resulting successful development of a fiducial parameter, eliminate poorly measured events, yielding an energy resolution ranging from ∼9 eVee at 0 keV to 101 eVee at ∼10 keVee. New results are derived for astrophysical uncertainties relevant to the WIMP-search limits, specifically examining how they are affected by variations in the most probable WIMP velocity and the Galactic escape velocity. These variations become more important for WIMP masses below 10 GeV/c2. Calculated WIMP signals at the ANDES laboratory: comparison with northern and southern located dark matter detectors

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are possible components of the Universe’s dark matter (DM). The detection of WIMPs is signaled by the recoil of the atomic nuclei which form a detector. CoGeNT at the Soudan Underground Laboratory (SUL) and DAMA at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) have reported data on annual modulation of signals attributed to WIMPs. Both experiments are located in laboratories in the Northern Hemisphere. DM detectors are planned to operate (or already operate) in laboratories in the Southern Hemisphere, including SABRE at Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) in Australia, and DM-ICE in Antarctica. In this work we have analyzed the dependence of diurnal and annual modulation of signals, pertaining to the detection of WIMP, on the coordinates of the laboratory, for experiments which may be performed in the planned new Agua Negra Deep Experimental Site (ANDES) underground facility, to be built in San Juan, Argentina. We made predictions for NaI and Ge-type detectors placed in ANDES, to compare with DAMA, CoGeNT, SABRE and DM-ICE arrays, and found that the diurnal modulation of the signals, at the ANDES site, is amplified at its maximum value, both for NaI (Ge)-type detectors, while the annual modulation remains unaffected by the change in coordinates from north to south.

Public outreach at the Soudan Underground Laboratory

There are many facets to the outreach program at the Soudan Underground Laboratory, currently host to the MINOS neutrino oscillation experiment and the Cryogenic Dark Matter experiment, plus a number of smaller experiments in the Low Background Counting Facility. The main focus is on twice daily public tours, operated in coordination with the Soudan Underground State Park and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, who also operate undergound tours of the historical iron mining area. Another important component is the undergraduate interns and high school teachers who lead the tours. They also participate in the operation and/or analysis of the experiments hosted at the mine.

Low-threshold WIMP search at SuperCDMS

The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) experiment aims to detecting nuclear recoils from weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs) by measuring phonon and ionization energy in crystalline Ge. It has been operating at the Soudan Underground Laboratory in Minnesota (USA) since March 2012 with improved background rejection capabilities with respect to CDMS II. A low-threshold analysis of the SuperCDMS data has been performed, allowing to explore WIMP masses below 30 GeV/c2. This is the first analysis using the full background rejection capabilities of SuperCDMS. In particular both phonon and ionization signals are used for defining a fiducial volume excluding events near any of the surfaces of the detectors. In addition, the background discrimination includes multivariate techniques optimized for several WIMP masses. The results are competitive with other low-threshold WIMP searches, and probe new parameter space for WIMP-nucleon scattering for WIMP masses between 4 and 6 GeV/c2.

The Results of MINOS and the Future with MINOS+

The MINOS experiment took data from 2005 up until 2012. The MINOS experiment took data from 2005 up until 2012, continuing beyond that as the MINOS+ experiment. The experiment is a two-detector, on-axis, long-baseline experiment, sending neutrinos from Fermilab to the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. By searching for the deficit of muon neutrinos at the Far Detector, MINOS/MINOS+ is sensitive to the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parametersΔm322andθ23. By using the full MINOS data set looking at bothνμdisappearance andνeappearance in both neutrino and antineutrino configurations at the NuMI beam along with atmospheric neutrino data recorded at the FD, MINOS has made the most precise measurement ofΔm322. Using a full three-flavour framework and searching forνeappearance, MINOS/MINOS+ gains sensitivity toθ13, the mass hierarchy, and the octant ofθ23. Exotic phenomenon is also explored with the MINOS detectors looking for nonstandard interactions and sterile neutrinos. The current MINOS+ era goals are to build on the previous MINOS results improving the precision on the three-flavour oscillation parameter measurements and strengthening the constraints placed on the sterile neutrino parameter space.

Low energy neutron background in deep underground laboratories

The natural neutron background influences the maximum achievable sensitivity in most deep underground nuclear, astroparticle and double-beta decay physics experiments. Reliable neutron flux numbers are an important ingredient in the design of the shielding of new large-scale experiments as well as in the analysis of experimental data. Using a portable setup of 3He counters we measured the thermal neutron flux at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility, the Soudan Underground Laboratory, on the 4100ft and the 4850ft levels of the Sanford Underground Research Facility, at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Absolute neutron fluxes at these laboratories are presented.

Improved WIMP-search reach of the CDMS II germanium data

CDMS II data from the 5-tower runs at the Soudan Underground Laboratory were reprocessed with an improved charge-pulse fitting algorithm. Two new analysis techniques to reject surface-event backgrounds were applied to the 612 kg days germanium-detector WIMP-search exposure. An extended analysis was also completed by decreasing the 10 keV analysis threshold to $\sim$5 keV, to increase sensitivity near a WIMP mass of 8 GeV/$c^2$. After unblinding, there were zero candidate events above a deposited energy of 10 keV and 6 events in the lower-threshold analysis. This yielded minimum WIMP-nucleon spin-independent scattering cross-section limits of $1.8 \times 10^{-44}$ and $1.18 \times 10 ^{-41}$ cm$^2$ at 90\% confidence for 60 and 8.6 GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs, respectively. This improves the previous CDMS II result by a factor of 2.4 (2.7) for 60 (8.6) GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs.

Detector Fabrication Yield for SuperCDMS Soudan

The SuperCDMS collaboration is presently operating a 9 kg Ge payload at the Soudan Underground Laboratory in their direct search for dark matter. The Ge detectors utilize double-sided athermal phonon sensors with an interdigitated electrode structure (iZIPs) to reject near-surface electron-recoil events. These detectors each have a mass of 0.6 kg and were fabricated with photolithographic techniques. The detector fabrication advances required and the production yield encountered are described.

Accurate Simulations of $$^{206}$$ 206 Pb Recoils in SuperCDMS

SuperCDMS is a direct detection search for WIMPs, currently operating a 9 kg array of germanium detectors in the Soudan Underground Laboratory. The detectors, known as iZIPs, are cylindrical in shape and each flat surface is instrumented with both ionization and phonon sensors. Charge and phonon information is collected for each event, and comparing the energy collected in the phonon sensors to the charge sensors gives excellent discrimination power between nuclear recoil and electron recoil events. Furthermore, this technology provides excellent discrimination between surface and bulk events. In order to show the surface event rejection capability of these detectors, two \(^{210}\)Pb sources were installed facing two of the detectors currently operating in the Soudan experimental run. The \(^{210}\)Pb decays to \(^{210}\)Bi, which in turn decays to \(^{210}\)Po. The \(^{210}\)Po decays by alpha emission, yielding a recoiling \(^{206}\)Pb ion with 103 keV kinetic energy and an alpha particle with 5.4 MeV kinetic energy. We used the non-standard Screened Nuclear Recoil Physics List (Mendenhall and Weller, Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. B 227:420–430, 2005) in Geant4 (Agostinelli et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. Sect. A 506:250–303, 2003) to simulate all of the above decays and achieve excellent agreement with experiment. The focus of this paper is the simulation of the \(^{210}\)Po decay.

Search for Low-Mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles Using Voltage-Assisted Calorimetric Ionization Detection in the SuperCDMS Experiment

SuperCDMS is an experiment designed to directly detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), a favored candidate for dark matter ubiquitous in the Universe. In this Letter, we present WIMP-search results using a calorimetric technique we call CDMSlite, which relies on voltage-assisted Luke-Neganov amplification of the ionization energy deposited by particle interactions. The data were collected with a single 0.6kg germanium detector running for ten live days at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. A low energy threshold of 170 eVee (electron equivalent) was obtained, which allows us to constrain new WIMP-nucleon spin-independent parameter space for WIMP masses below 6 GeV/c2.

Phonon-Based Position Determination in SuperCDMS iZIP Detectors

SuperCDMS is currently operating a 10-kg array of cryogenic germanium detectors in the Soudan underground laboratory to search for weakly interacting massive particles, a leading dark matter candidate. These detectors, known as iZIPs, measure ionization and athermal phonons from particle interactions with sensors on both sides of a Ge crystal. The ionization signal can be used to efficiently tag events at high radius and near the top and bottoms surfaces, where diminished charge collection can cause events to mimic WIMP-induced nuclear recoils. Using calibration data taken with a 210Pb source underground at Soudan, we demonstrate rejection of surface events of (4.5 +/- 0.9) x 10^-4 with 46% acceptance of nuclear recoils using the phonon signal only. We also show with 133Ba calibration data underground that the phonon channels can efficiently identify events near the sidewall. This phonon-based approach can also be extended to lower energies than the ionization-based position reconstruction.

Demonstration of surface electron rejection with interleaved germanium detectors for dark matter searches

The SuperCDMS experiment in the Soudan Underground Laboratory searches for dark matter with a 9-kg array of cryogenic germanium detectors. Symmetric sensors on opposite sides measure both charge and phonons from each particle interaction, providing excellent discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils, and between surface and interior events. Surface event rejection capabilities were tested with two 210Pb sources producing ∼130 beta decays/hr. In ∼800 live hours, no events leaked into the 8–115 keV signal region, giving upper limit leakage fraction 1.7 × 10−5 at 90% C.L., corresponding to &amp;lt; 0.6 surface event background in the future 200-kg SuperCDMS SNOLAB experiment.

CoGeNT: A search for low-mass dark matter usingp-type point contact germanium detectors

CoGeNT employs p-type point-contact (PPC) germanium detectors to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). By virtue of its low energy threshold and ability to reject surface backgrounds, this type of device allows an emphasis on low-mass dark matter candidates (wimp mass of about 10 GeV/c2). We report on the characteristics of the PPC detector presently taking data at the Soudan Underground Laboratory, elaborating on aspects of shielding, data acquisition, instrumental stability, data analysis, and background estimation. A detailed background model is used to investigate the low energy excess of events previously reported, and to assess the possibility of temporal modulations in the low-energy event rate. Extensive simulations of all presently known backgrounds do not provide a viable background explanation for the excess of low-energy events in the CoGeNT data, or the previously observed temporal variation in the event rate. Also reported on for the first time is a determination of the surface (slow pulse rise time) event contamination in the data as a function of energy. We conclude that the CoGeNT detector technology is well suited to search for the annual modulation signature expected from dark matter particle interactions in the region of WIMP mass and coupling favored by the DAMA/LIBRA results
