Evaluation of Newborns Born in a Training and Research Hospital in Mogadishu,Somalia, Africa

Background: This study aimed to determine the clinical characteristics of the newborns born in the hospital.Methods: This study included 1199 newborns born in Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan Training and Research Hospital, Mogadishu, Somalia, Africa, in 2018. The gender, birth weight and height, delivery method, health status, mother's age, as well as gravida and parity conditions were retrospectively obtained from the records of the delivery clinic.Results: Out of 1199 newborns, 610 neonates were male (50.9%). The mean birth weight of the newborns was 2915.7±907.5 gr, and the mean birth height was 47.6±4.6 cm. Moreover, 66.6% of the newborns were born by normal vaginal delivery, and 91.8% were born alive. The mean age of the mothers was 26.3±5.4 years, and the mean values of gravida and parity were 3.8±2.5 and 2.9±2.1, respectively.Conclusion: There is a dearth of research regarding the evaluation of newborns in Somalia, Africa. Therefore, it is hoped that the results of this study will contribute to form standards for the follow-up of growth and development of infants living in this region and to improvematernal and child health.

La Política Exterior de Seguridad Común de la Unión Europea (PESC) opera a través de distintas herramientas y programas, los cuales llevan implícitos los elementos filosóficos que dan vida a la UE: El establecimiento de la paz entre Estados miembros, la seguridad internacional, la cohesión social, el respeto a los derechos humanos y la consolidación de la democracia, por mencionar algunos.Por ello, las misiones civiles o militares que apruebe el Consejo de Europa, a través de lo pactado en la PESC, deberán ejecutarse de manera integral, con miras a la estabilidad sostenible de la paz.En ese sentido, el presente trabajo pretende analizar las razones de la implementación de las Misiones EUTM Somalia, eucap Somalia y Operación navfor Atalanta, en el Cuerno de África, para demostrar que la imposibilidad del Estado somalí para enfrentar el crecimiento del terrorismo y la piratería ma- rítima de la zona ha sido motivo de preocupación para la UE.

Phenotypic characterization of selected Kenyan Khat (Catha edulis) cultivars based on morphological traits

Khat (Catha edulis Vahl) is an evergreen shrub habitually ingested for its euphoric and stimulatory effects. The crop is grown in the Middle East, Somalia, East Africa and Ethiopia. It is referred to as Miraa in Kenya, while in Yemen it has several names like Qat, Kat, Kath, Gat, Chat and Tschat. It belongs to the sub-order Rosidae, family Celastraceae and characterized by astringent taste. Despite the daily use and consumption of khat by millions of people in Kenya, little is known about its phenotypic. Phenotypic characterization is an essential approach for assessment of khat diversity; however, it is limited by morphological plasticity and multiple lineage evolution. The study aimed at evaluating the phenotypic diversity of selected khat cultivars grown in Embu and Meru Counties. Ninety samples from 18 cultivars were collected for phenotypic characterization. MINITAB 17 Software was used for description of principal component and construction of dendrogram using the Euclidean distance tool where 58.7% variability was observed among 13 traits studied in 90 samples of khat. Phenotypes grouped into 2 clusters phenotypic diversity showed considerable variability based on 13 khat traits. This will be useful in breeding and characterization programmes of khat cultivars. A review of the Madagascan species of the genus Cestradoretus Ohaus(Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Adoretini).

The genus Cestradoretus Ohaus, 1912 was erected by Ohaus (1912) to accommodate a Madagascan Adoretini species, C. tenuirostris Ohaus, 1912. This genus is characterized by the adults having the apex of the labrum with a long, fine, acute process curved downwards. In the addition to the above mentioned paper, Ohaus (1912) also described C. acomys Ohaus, 1912 from Tanzania, and later moved Adoretus tarsatus Klug, 1855, described from Mozambique, to Cestradoretus (Ohaus 1916). Later, Machatschke (1965) described two species from Africa, C. freyi Machatschke, 1965 from Botswana and C. minusculus Machatschke, 1965 from Somalia, and Frey (1976) described C. clypealis Frey, 1976 from Somalia. Thus, Cestradoretus included six species, one from Madagascar and five from Africa.

“Today” in Africa

Complaints about Africa’s media image have been voiced for years, and for long little seemed to change. Civil wars, famine, squalor and primitivity have continued to dominate the headlines and to paint a grim image of mankind’s ancestral home. The recent media fixation on Somalia is but one in a series of this one-dimensional coverage. In the early 1960s, the anarchy in Katanga (Zaire) dominated the news and defined Africa. In the late 1960s, it was the Nigerian civil war and the consequent misery in “Biafra.” In the 1970s, the real and conjured eccentricities of Uganda’s Idi Amin became the African news. Political conflict in Zimbabwe and South Africa dominated much of the 1980s, until the starvation of Ethiopians eclipsed everything else. Recently, the grim images were of Somalia. While these events warranted the press attention they received, their coverage to the near exclusion of non-crisis modem African life has left a severe knowledge gap and perpetuated a historical image problem.
