The article deals with the discussion of identity in interdisciplinary cognitive approach. This approach is a leading one in the XХІ-st century humanities. The article topicality is determined by the necessity of multifaceted analysis, systematization and description of numerous theories by various academics with the aim of referring them to interdisciplinary cognitive approach. Interdisciplinary cognitive approach to identity research is described in terms of objects and perspectives of study, range of problems, main definitions of identity, its functions, varieties and mechanisms. The article also explores and analyzes leading theories which contributed to the formation of abovementioned approach. The aim of the article is to systematize and reveal the characteristic features of identity research in the XХІ -st century within the frame of interdisciplinary cognitive approach. The object of the article – humanitarian interdisciplinary cognitive approach to identity. The subject – research directions, main identity definitions, its functions, kinds and mechanisms within the frame of cognitive approach. The work uses a set of methods: observation, induction and deduction, analysis and synthesis, taxonomy and modelling. Identity discourse in XХІ -st century cognitive approach aims at the solution of main problems in personal, social and cognitive psychology: correlation between individual and collective identities, between categorization and social comparison, that ensure the formation of identity. Identity is considered as a phenomenon of individual and overindividual conscience, that represents the result of emotional and cognitive process of person’s awareness of group belonging as well as the result of community’s selfconscience that characterizes it as a collective integrity.
