Gelatin microsphere coated Fe3O4@graphene quantum dots nanoparticles as a novel magnetic sorbent for ultrasound-assisted dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction of tricyclic antidepressants in biological samples.

Gelatin microsphere-coated Fe3O4@graphene quantum dots (Fe3O4@GQD@GM) were designed and synthesized as a novel sorbent via ultrasonic-assisted dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction (UA-DMSPE) method. The synthesized sorbent was identified and confirmed by FT-IR, XRD, VSM, and SEM techniques. UA-DMSPE was combined with corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry for trace determination of desipramine, sertraline, and citalopram. Effective parameters were considered and optimized. The proposed method, under optimal conditions, showed excellent linearity in different concentration ranges (2-700ng mL-1, R2 > 0.995), repeatability (RSD < 5.1%), good sensitivity (LODs in the range 0.6-1.5ngmL-1), high preconcentration factor (PF = 207-218), and acceptable relative recoveries (93.5-101.8%). Eventually, this method was used to determine tricyclic antidepressants in various biological samples. Selective determination of thidiazuron herbicide in fruit and vegetable samples using molecularly imprinted polymer fiber solid phase microextraction with ion mobility spectrometry detection (MIPF-SPME-IMS)

In this study, we use corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry (CD-IMS) as a detection technique for determining thidiazuron (TDZ) after its selective microextraction using molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) fibers. This is the first time that MIP fiber solid phase microextraction-ion mobility spectrometry (MIPF-SPME-IMS) was used to detect TDZ. The fiber was synthesized simply using a narrow bore silica capillary as a mold by the copolymerization of methacrylic acid–ethylene glycol dimethacrylate imprinted with TDZ. The prepared MIPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained flexible MIP monolithic fibers have high chemical and thermal stabilities with good selectivity to TDZ. The effective parameters influencing the polymerization were also investigated. In addition, the influences of different factors such as pH, extraction time, desorption solvent, and temperature on the extraction efficiency of the analyte were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, analytical parameters such as linearity, precision and limit of detection were also evaluated. The linear range was in the range of 0.01–20μgL−1 (r2=0.9980) and the limit of detection was 0.005μgL−1. Intra- and inter-day precisions were satisfactory with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.9% and 2%, respectively. Finally, the established MIPF-SPME-IMS method was successfully applied in the selective determination of TDZ residues in fruit and vegetable samples.

Planar solid-phase microextraction-ion mobility spectrometry: a diethoxydiphenylsilane-based coating for the detection of explosives and explosive taggants

A novel diethoxydiphenylsilane-based coating for planar solid-phase microextraction was developed using sol-gel technology and used for ion mobility spectrometric detection of the explosives 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, 2,4-dinitrotoluene, and of the explosive taggant ethylene glycol dinitrate. The trap was characterized in terms of coating thickness, morphology, inter-batch repeatability, and extraction efficiency. An average thickness of 143 ± 13 μm with a uniform distribution of the coating was obtained. Good performances of the developed procedure in terms of both intra-batch and inter-batch repeatability with relative standard deviations <7% were obtained. Experimental design and desirability function were used to find the optimal conditions for simultaneous headspace extraction of the investigated compounds: the optimal values were found in correspondence of a time and a temperature of extraction of 45 min and 40 °C, respectively. Detection and quantitation limits in low nanogram levels were achieved proving the superior extraction capability of the developed coating, obtaining ion mobility spectrometric responses at least two times higher than those achieved using commercial teflon and paper traps.

Detection of piperonal emitted from polymer controlled odor mimic permeation systems utilizing Canis familiaris and solid phase microextraction–ion mobility spectrometry

Currently, in the field of odor detection, there is generally a wider variation in limit of detections (LODs) for canines than instruments. The study presented in this paper introduces an improved protocol for the creation of controlled odor mimic permeation system (COMPS) devices for use as standards in canine training and discusses the canine detection thresholds of piperonal, a starting material for the illicit drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), when exposed to these devices. Additionally, this paper describes the first-ever reported direct comparison of solid phase microextraction–ion mobility spectrometry (SPME–IMS) to canine detection for the MDMA odorant, piperonal. The research presented shows the reliability of COMPS devices as low cost field calibrants providing a wide range of odorant concentrations for biological and instrumental detectors. The canine LOD of piperonal emanating from the 100 ng s −1 COMPS was found to be 1 ng as compared to the SPME–IMS LOD of piperonal in a static, closed system at 2 ng, with a linear dynamic range from 2 ng to 11 ng. The utilization of the COMPS devices would allow for training that will reduce the detection variability between canines and maintain improved consistency for training purposes. Since both SPME and IMS are field portable technologies, it is expected that this coupled method will be useful as a complement to canine detection for the field detection of MDMA.

Headspace sampling and detection of cocaine, MDMA, and marijuana via volatile markers in the presence of potential interferences by solid phase microextraction–ion mobility spectrometry (SPME-IMS)

The successful air sampling and detection of cocaine, methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA), and marijuana using SPME-IMS achieved by targeting their volatile markers (methyl benzoate, piperonal, and terpenes, respectively) is presented. Conventional methods of direct air sampling for drugs are ineffective because the parent compounds of these drugs have very low vapor pressures, making them unavailable for headspace sampling. Instead of targeting the parent drugs, IMS was set at the optimal operating conditions (determined in previous work) in order to detect their volatile chemical markers. SPME is an effective and rapid air sampling technique for the preconcentration of analytes which is especially useful in confined spaces such as cargo containers, where the volatile marker compounds of drugs can be found in sufficient concentrations. By sampling the air using a 100 microm polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) SPME fiber for as little as one minute, enough mass of the targeted volatile markers in the headspace of a quart-sized metal paint can (gallon, approximately 1101 cm(3)) which contained sub-gram quantities of the drug samples was recovered for IMS detection. Additionally, several potentially interfering compounds found in goods commonly shipped in cargo containers were tested individually as well as in mixtures with the drugs. No peak interferences were observed for MDMA or marijuana, and minimal peak interferences were found for cocaine.

A new thermal desorption solid-phase microextraction system for hand-held ion mobility spectrometry

In this paper a new prototype of solid phase microextraction–ion mobility spectrometry (SPME–IMS) system was developed to effectively couple the extraction efficiency of SPME with the detection capability of IMS. The main component of this system was the transfer line/desorber, which was a low-thermal-mass (ca. 0.15 g) silicosteel coatings stainless steel tube. The transfer line/desorber was designed to rapidly desorb and transfer the analytes extracted by SPME to IMS. A custom-made temperature controller with a proportional–integral–differential (PID) was used to maintain the temperature of the transfer line/desorber stable and avoid overheating or oscillating. The low thermal mass of this interface allowed it to be rapidly heated and cooled with much less electrical power and could substantially reduce the demand for high capacity batteries. The operational characteristics of this system were demonstrated through the analysis of camphor vapour. The precision of reduced mobility and the peak amplitude of camphor were good (R.S.D. 0.62%, n = 10; R.S.D. 2.5%, n = 10, respectively). SPME–IMS system was also shown to be capable of on-site measurement by monitoring the biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted from eucalyptus citriodora leaves. In addition, this system was applied to quantitation of diazepam and cocaine in aqueous solution. Limits of detection were 10 ng/mL for diazepam and 50 ng/mL for cocaine with the reported experimental conditions. This SPME–IMS system exhibits considerable promise as a robust, simple, rapid, energy-saving fieldable approach for on-site analysis of analytes in various matrix.

Determination of Parabens in Pharmaceutical Formulations by Solid-Phase Microextraction-Ion Mobility Spectrometry

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) was used for the detection and quantitation of 4-hydroxybenzoate preservatives, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben, in commercial pharmaceutical products. For the first time, SPME-IMS is described for the simultaneous detection, separation, and quantitation of multiple analytes in complex matrixes. The parabens are extracted from the samples using SPME, and the analytes on the fiber are heated by the IMS desorber unit and vaporized into the drift tube. The four preservatives differing only by a methyl group were separated in less than 18 ms. The analytical procedure was optimized for fiber coating selection, extraction time, sample pH, sample volume, ionic strength, and IMS conditions. Separation characteristics such as resolution, theoretical plates, and drift times of the parabens were also evaluated based on the direct interfacing of SPME to IMS. The conditions were tested using six over-the-counter topical products containing various combinations of preservatives. Analysis of the samples by SPME-IMS using benzyl paraben as an internal standard yields good comparison to an HPLC method, thereby reinforcing the applicability of this technique as a method for routine analysis. Limits of detection were 10 ng/mL for methylparaben and ethylparaben and 5 ng/mL for propylparaben and butylparaben. Good linearity range and reproducibility of less than 8% were obtained.

Rapid screening of precursor and degradation products of chemical warfare agents in soil by solid-phase microextraction ion mobility spectrometry (SPME–IMS)

The use of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) to detect precursor and degradation products of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) as soil contaminants was investigated. The development and characterization of a system to interface a thermal desorption solid-phase microextraction inlet with a hand held ion mobility spectrometer was demonstrated. The analytes used in this study were diisopropyl methylphosphonate (DIMP), diethyl methylphosphonate (DEMP), and dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). Two SPME fibers with different stationary phases, 100 μm polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and 65 μm polydimethylsiloxane divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB), were evaluated in this study to determine the optimal fiber and extraction conditions. Better results were obtained with the PDMS fiber. SPME–IMS offered good repeatability and detection of the precursor and degradation products in spiked soil at concentrations as low as 10 μg/g. Sample analysis time was less than 30 min for all the precursor and degradation products.
