Experimental analysis of solar panel efficiency improvement with composite phase change materials

The solar photovoltaic panel's efficiency is significantly diminished by an increase in operating temperature. Addressing this problem in a variety of composite phase change materials integrated with solar panels would require more efficient thermal management of the panel. Four different modules viz. The reference panel as module1, solar panel with paraffin jelly & expanded Graphite as module 2, solar panel with paraffin jelly & expanded perlite as module 3, solar panel with paraffin jelly & expanded vermiculite as module 4, were considered for investigations. Comparisons and discussions are presented based on a number of factors, including electrical efficiency, output power, and surface temperature of the solar panel with and without cooling. Outdoor testing of the proposed methods as compared with the reference panel. The results shows that the module 3 was able to offer the maximum surface temperature reduction from 59.04 °C to 48.75 °C, increase the electrical efficiency from 11.97% to 14.89% during noon time and increase the power output from 28.95 W to 36.99 W. Thus, a combination of paraffin jelly with expanded perlite phase change material panel reduces the maximum panel surface temperature and improves the power output and efficiency compared to other panels.

Combining data envelopment analysis and Random Forest for selecting optimal locations of solar PV plants

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy has emerged as a potential alternative to carbon-based energies to meet the Paris agreement commitment. This study investigates the effect of environmental variables on the efficiency of solar PV panels. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to estimate efficiencies of 91 solar PV panels located in Australia during the time period 2010–2020. The effects of environmental variables on the estimated efficiencies are quantified using the truncated regression model. Random forest is then used to predict efficiency of solar PV panel in every city of Australia. The results allow to determine the most suitable location and regions for solar PV energy production in Australia. This study provides an interesting and easily interpretable tool for policy decision makers.

Maintaining the efficiency of solar panels using IoT

The efficiency of Solar Photovoltaic panel is affected by various factors such as dust sedimentation, shading, high temperature and damaged PV panels. Hence this paper proposes a system to eliminate the main factors that majorly affects the efficiency of solar panels, thereby maintaining the efficiency of solar panels. Cleaning of panels can considerably increase the efficiency of electricity generated and also increase the durability of Solar panels. The shading problem can be addressed by using solar tracking mechanism. Over heating of PV panels can be reduced by various cooling techniques and damaged PV panels can be identified using real time monitoring. Data collection and cloud computation can be done on that data to provide a better working environment for this proposed system.

Development of water-cooling system for enhancing the efficiency of solar photovoltaic panel

The solar photovoltaic module converts solar energy into electrical energy. It converts only 5-15% of incoming solar radiation into electricity and the remaining more than 80% of solar radiation either gets reflected into the atmosphere or dissipated into the solar photovoltaic module in the form of thermal energy. Elevated module temperature reduces the electrical efficiency of modules. Keeping in view to enhance the efficiency of a solar photovoltaic module, a water cooling system for the photovoltaic module was developed which is fixed at the rear side of the module. The developed system generates both electric energy and thermal energy. The experimental results like electrical efficiency of photovoltaic module, thermal and combined efficiency at a constant mass flow rate were obtained under the climatic condition of Udaipur, Rajasthan. The results at water mass flow rate of 0.0056 kg/s and average solar radiation of 540.82 W/m2, significant improvement in the efficiency of a photovoltaic module by 7.38% with a thermal and combined efficiency of 53.28% and 66.47%.

Effect of Temperature on Solar Photovoltaic Panel Efficiency

Solar energy is the important energy source for future. Lot of devices are used for capture the energy from solar radiation and convert into useful form of energy. Solar PV (Photovoltaic) Panels are the promising devices convert the solar radiation into electrical form of energy. The partial portion of solar energy may be converted into electricity remaining in the form heat energy. Solar PV panel performance varies with temperature increase. The PV panel temperature has effect on power and voltage. Due to increase of temperature, the photovoltaic solar cells efficiency may be decreased. The life of the panel also will be decreased. In this paper how the heat energy received from solar radiation in the form of temperature affect the solar panel efficiency was analysed by experiment conducted with solar PV panel of 50W in the real outdoor environmental condition.

Analyzing the impact of dust accumulation and different cleaning mechanism on efficiency of solar photovoltaic panel

Electricity generation around the world is mainly produced by using non-renewable energy sources especially in the commercial buildings. However, Rooftop solar Photovoltaic (PV) system produced a significant impact on environmental and economical benefits in comparison to the conventional energy sources, thus contributing to sustainable development. Such PV’s system encourages the production of electricity without greenhouse gas emissions that leads to a clean alternative to fossil fuels and economic prosperity even in less developed areas. However, efficiency of rooftop solar PV systems depends on many factors, the dominant being geographical (latitude, longitude, and solar intensity), environmental (temperature, wind, humidity, pollution, dust, rain, etc.) and the type of PV (from raw material extraction and procurement, to manufacturing, disposal, and/or recycling) used. During the feasibility analysis of the environment, geographical conditions are keep in well consideration, but the pollution level of the city is always overlooked, which significantly influences the performance of the PV installations. Therefore, this research work focused on the performance of rooftop solar PV installed in one of the most polluted city in India. Here, the loss in power generation of rooftop solar PV has been studied for the effect of deposited dust particles, wind velocity before and after the cleaning of the panels. The actual data has been utilized for the calculation of the energy efficiency and power output of the PV systems. According to the results, it has been concluded that dust deposition, wind speed and pollution level in city significantly reduces the efficiency of solar photovoltaic panel. Hence, an overview of social and environmental impacts of PV technologies is presented in this paper along with potential benefits and pitfalls.

Life span and overall performance enhancement of Solar Photovoltaic cell using water as coolant: A recent review

In today’s world, as electricity consumption is increasing, people are more dependent on electricity. Solar Photovoltaic system is one method to generate electricity. The conversion efficiency of solar photovoltaic panel depends on atmospheric condition and reflection. The operating temperature of photovoltaic module plays an important role in performance of PV system as efficiency of PV system decreases when temperature module increases. The operating photovoltaic cells at high temperature degrades the material of it in long time. Operating solar photovoltaic at lower temperature will increase its lifespan. This will reduce module surface area by increasing overall output power. Researchers have proposed and tested several cooling techniques for the panel. One of the most common and effective way to cool PV module is used of water as coolant. In this paper, efforts made by various researchers to cool down solar photovoltaic module to increase the efficiency using water application have been discussed. The application of water on front surface, rear surface, both front and rear surface have been reviewed extensively. The performance of module by immersion in water also have been reported.

Computational fluid dynamics analysis and experimental validation of improvement in overall energy efficiency of a solar photovoltaic panel by thermal energy recovery

The electrical efficiency of solar photovoltaic (PV) panel decreases with increase in its temperature because of its negative temperature co-efficient. This problem has been identified and attempts have been made to cool the photovoltaic panel by transferring heat by researchers the world over. The capitalization of the transferred heat for useful purpose is of prime importance since the conventional solar PV panel has the conversion efficiency of only 5%–17%. This means, about 83%–95% of incident energy is wasted and the proposition of recovering energy from solar PV panel can tap more thermal energy than electrical energy generated by PV panel itself. The present paper addresses this objective. The heat was transferred by direct contact heat exchange with flowing water from top of the panel. The direct contact heat exchange from top surface was found efficient in recovering energy as well improving the performance of PV panel. The refraction of light as it passes through the water layer straightens the incident radiation. The straightened radiation along with lower temperature of PV panel synergistically increases photovoltaic conversion efficiency. The computational fluid dynamics simulation of PV panel temperature closely resembles experimental data. There is a potential to recover energy at larger scale for large scale solar PV installations. Thus, the present paper proposes the win-win scenario of improved panel performance and maximum energy recovery.
