Insight into the dynamics of protected and non-protected carbon pools in four soils with different land uses

Abstract Background and aims To provide insight into the patterns of soil organic matter decomposition, changes in the quantity of biopolymers and the correlation between them were followed using 2D correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) FTIR. Methods Soil organic matter fractions with different vegetation/land use (grass, spruce, oak and arable) were examined in a 1-year laboratory incubation. The non-protected organic matter fraction was calculated in terms of particulate organic matter (POM), the carbon stabilized in aggregates as S + A (sand + aggregates), and the mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) as the s + c (silt and clay) fraction. Results Forest soils (spruce, oak) exhibited high C and N accumulation in the POM fraction (48, 43% and 29, 22% for spruce and oak, respectively) due to the limited decomposition, caused by low pH and high soil C/N ratio. The 2DCOS analysis revealed that carbohydrate-protein and carbohydrate-lignin correlations could be observed most frequently during incubation. The carbohydrate-protein correlation was negative in all cases, for all fractions and for all vegetation types, which suggests biogeochemical linkage between these biopolymers. The temporal order of the spectral changes was widely varied for the vegetation types and especially for the SOM fractions. Lipid/Lignin → Carbohydrate or Lipid → Lignin/Carboxyl/Protein sequences were found for the protected carbon pools (S + A and s + c), possibly because of the readily available abundant N compounds present in MAOM. Conclusion Although lipids and lignin are considered as chemically stable materials that commonly remain constant during decomposition, these compounds were found to be very susceptible in all the fractions.

The Use of Integrated Crop–Livestock Systems as a Strategy to Improve Soil Organic Matter in the Brazilian Cerrado

This study aimed to analyze the carbon (C) stock and stabilization of soil organic matter in particulate- and mineral-associated fractions across different land use systems after 32 years of experimentation in the Brazilian Cerrado. The experiment was established in 1991 and was performed in Planaltina-DF. The treatments evaluated included continuous pasture with monoculture grasses; integrated crop–livestock systems under no tillage; continuous cropping under no tillage; minimum tillage; and the preservation of the native Cerrado biome in its original condition. Soil sampling was performed to a depth of 30 cm. Carbon and nitrogen (N) stocks were quantified for the years 2001, 2009, 2013, and 2023, with soil organic matter fractionation performed on samples from 2023. Land use change resulted in significant losses of soil C and N in areas managed with conventional soil preparation practices. Systems that promote plant diversity, such as integrated crop–livestock systems, enhanced soil C and N stocks (72.8 and 5.5 Mg ha−1, respectively) and increased both particulate organic matter and mineral-associated fractions, most of which were in more stabilized forms. Integrated crop–livestock systems are management practices that offer an effective alternative to present methods in terms of combating climate change and supporting ecosystem sustainability.

Changes in Soil Humin Macromolecular Structure Resulting from Long-Term Catch Cropping.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of long-term catch crop application on the structural properties of humin, which is considered the most recalcitrant fraction of soil organic matter. Soil samples from a 30-year field experiment on triticale cultivated with and without catch crops were analysed to determine the total organic carbon content and fractional composition of humic substances. Meanwhile, humin isolated from bulk soil was analysed to determine its elemental composition and spectroscopic properties measured with UV-Vis, fluorescence, and 13C-CPMAS-NMR. It was found that catch crop farming enhanced the formation of highly reactive humus substances, like low-molecular-weight fractions and humic acids, while decreasing the humin fraction. The higher H/C and O/C atomic ratios of humin and the UV-Vis, fluorescence, and 13C-CPMAS-NMR results confirmed a higher share of oxygen-containing functional groups in humin isolated from the soil with catch crop rotation, also corroborating its greater aliphatic nature. Under the conditions of our field experiment, the results indicated that organic residues from catch crops quickly undergo the decay process and are transformed mainly into highly reactive humus substances, which can potentially improve soil health, while mineral fertilisation alone without catch crops favours the stabilisation and sequestration of carbon.

Restoring degraded lands: the role of sewage sludge in modulating soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics

Sewage sludge presents significant amounts of organic matter and nutrients and is frequently considered an alternative input for recovering degraded soils. In this scenario, this study aimed to evaluate the impacts of disposing of increasing doses of sewage sludge on the dynamics of C and N in the soil of a degraded area. After the application of five doses of sewage sludge (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 t ha-1) were evaluated over time (30, 90, 180, 270, and 360 days), the contents of soil C and N, microbial biomass, light organic matter, and humic fractions of soil organic matter. The results showed that sewage sludge contributed to the quality and recovery of degraded soil by providing increases in soil organic C, total N, nitrate, and ammonia contents, microbial biomass C and N, light organic matter, as well as in the C and N stocks in humic substances, especially in humin. Most of the increases in these variables associated with C and N dynamics remained even one year after the application of sewage sludge. The soil quality improvement demonstrates the potential of using sewage sludge in projects to recover degraded areas as an alternative for its final disposal.

Soil water repellency under Eucalyptus stands of different age and its relationship with soil hydrological function and soil organic matter

Eucalyptus stands can modify soil hydrological functioning, by several mechanisms including the effect of the growing root system, changes in soil organic matter (SOM) and the occurrence of soil water repellency (SWR). This effect is expected to evolve with time, as tree root system develop and SOM is formed from tree litter. SWR can prevent water from entering the soil, reducing infiltration, while the effect of roots and SOM can improve structure, favoring infiltration. The aims of this study were: i- to determine the influence of Eucalyptus stands of different ages on soil physical and hydraulic properties and SWR phenomena; ii- to evaluate the effects of SOM content and composition on SWR; iii- to determine the relationship between SWR and soil physical properties; iv- to compare different methodologies for SWR evaluation. The soil studied was a in a silty loam Typic Argiudoll with Eucalyptus stands of 3, 7, 11 and 32 years. Samples were taken to determine saturated and near saturation hydraulic conductivity, water retention curve, total organic carbon and different fractions of SOM, and SWR. Different parameters were used to estimate SWR, including the repellency index (RI), water repellency cessation time (WRCT), modified repellency index (RIm), and a qualitative analysis of the shapes of cumulative infiltration curves. As main results, a reduction in total porosity (TP) in the first years of Eucalyptus plantation was found, followed by a steep increased in TP, mainly due to an increase in microporosity. Hydraulic conductivity decreased with stand age, which was attributed to a decrease in macro and mesoporosity and porosity connectivity. SOM and most SOM fractions were not affected by stand age. RI was a consistent method to estimate SWR in Eucalyptus stands, while WRCT and RIm determination was more difficult when non classical shapes of infiltration curves were obtained.

Contribution of distinct components in divergent organic amendments to long-term accumulation of soil organic matter in agricultural soils: evidence from thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation-GC/MS.

Although maintaining/improving soil organic matter (SOM) quantity through utilizing organic amendments (OAs) is a productive practice, information on OA components contributing to long-term SOM accumulation in agricultural soils remains meager. Hence, we examined soil samples from a long-term experiment with different fertilizer managements, including no fertilizer (NF), chemical fertilizer (CF) only (CF), bark compost plus CF (BC + CF), coffee residue compost plus CF (CRC + CF), cattle manure compost plus CF (CMC + CF), and cattle manure compost (CMC) or sewage sludge compost (SSC) alone at a higher application rate. SOM in those samples was physically fractionated into free particulate form (fSOM), free form occluded in aggregates (oSOM), weakly bound form (wSOM), and strongly bound form (sSOM). Analysis of structural components in OAs and SOM fractions using thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (THM-GC/MS) revealed OA components that have contributed to long-term SOM accumulation in each treatment. The SSC was characterized by higher proportions of short-chain fatty acids (FAs; 50%) and other aliphatic compounds (22%). Correlation analysis suggested that these characteristics may be effective for greater C accumulation in the bulk soil and wSOM fraction. The proportion of lignin-derived phenols, e.g., 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde (Vh) and 1,2-dimethoxy-4-(1,2,3-trimethoxypropyl)benzene, was high in CMC (43%), presumably vital for promoting C accumulations in the oSOM, wSOM, and sSOM fractions in the CMC treatment. The short-chain FAs in CRC and aromatic components in BC are likely important for contributing fSOM accumulation.

Carbon Stock and Chemical Fractionation of Organic Matter in Different Soil Management Systems in the Bahian Cerrado

ABSTRACT Determining total organic carbon and its stock and quantifying the chemical fractions of soil organic matter can be used as indicators of the quality of the soil management used in a cropping area. This study aimed to quantify soil organic matter’s carbon stock and chemical fractions in different soil management systems used in the western Bahian Cerrado, Brazil, and compare them to a native Cerrado area. Ten microregions (Alto Horizonte, Anel da Soja, Bela Vista, Cascudeiro, Coaceral, Novo Paraná, Panambi, Placas, Roda Velha, Roda Velha de Baixo), three soil management systems [tillage system (TS), no-tillage systems (nTS), native Cerrado (NC)], and two soil layers (0–0.1 and 0.1–0.2 m) were studied. Soil bulk density (Sd), soil organic matter (SOM), total organic carbon (TOC), SOM quantification (qSOM), equivalent carbon stock (EqCs), humin (HF), humic acid (HAF) and fulvic acid (FAF) fractions from SOM were evaluated. The results indicated that Sd in all evaluated microregions was below the critical upper limit that would restrict plant root development. SOM, TOC, EqCs, and qSOM revealed increasing results following the TS, nTS, and NC order. The NC area presented the highest soil organic fraction contents (HF, HAF, and FAF). The microregions with better soil quality for all evaluated parameters were Coaceral and Cascudeiro; the lowest soil quality was observed in Alto Horizonte. The present study indicates that conservation agricultural management, such as the no-tillage system, improves the structure and composition of SOM parameters over time.

Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks in Soil under Native Pastures in the Pantanal Wetland Biome, Brazil

The Pantanal has a high diversity of native pastures that provide food for many wild and domestic animals. Pantanal cattle raising is practiced in an extensive grazing-based system that varies according to the flood levels in the area. This study aimed to evaluate the fractions of soil organic matter in areas of native pastures under different uses and to quantify C and N stocks in sandy soils of the Pantanal. Soil samples from three native pastures differentiated by the predominance of Hymenachne amplexicaulis, Axonopus purpusii, and Mesosetum chaseae under different land use systems (continuous grazing and no grazing for five years) were collected and used to quantify the contents of carbon, nitrogen, and humic fractions. The dynamics of SOM are modified in grazed areas of the Pantanal, with influence on C and N, including their stocks. Native pastures of Axonopus purpusii and Hymenachne amplexicaulis showed an increase in organic matter after five years without grazing, while Mesosetum chaseae showed lower soil density and nitrogen levels. The highest C stock was observed in ungrazed areas of H. amplexicaulis (127.41 Mg ha−1 in the 0–40 cm layer). The dynamics of nitrogen in Pantanal pastures are influenced by the type of vegetation and land management, with higher nitrogen content in the surface layer (0–10 cm) and an increasing C/N ratio with soil depth, indicating lower nitrogen availability.

Chemical and spectroscopic composition of humic substances in soil subjected to pig manure applications for ten years

ABSTRACT Application of pig manure (PM) in agriculture can influence the amount and composition of soil organic matter (SOM). This study evaluated the changes in contents and stock of C in chemical fractions of SOM and the chemical and spectroscopic composition of humic substances (HS) in a Typic Hapludult (Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo) after ten years of PM application. Experimental area received 90 and 180 kg ha -1 of N in the form of pig slurry (PS90 and PS180) and pig deep litter (DL90 and DL180), in addition to the control, without application (SA). Soil samples were prepared, and the chemical fractioning of SOM, elemental analysis, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of HS were performed. Applications of PM favored the accumulation of C in soil (up to 53 %), and PS180 increased humic acids (HA) (up to 185 %), while applications of DL favored the increase of hydrophilic substances extracted with HCl and humin (HU) (up to 10 times and 60 %, respectively). Applications of PS180 and DL180 promoted an increase in the aromatic and carboxylic character of the HS, increasing cationic exchange capacity. Therefore, PM applications, especially with DL, contribute positively to C fixation in the soil and the chemical composition of organic material.

Labile not stable SOC fractions constitute the manageable drivers of soil health advances in carbon farming

The assessment of soil health and the determination of carbon stability in soils are current challenges that have gained momentum through initiatives at national as well as international scales. However, inferring universally valid soil health parameters that are directly linked to carbon permanence remains challenging. Our aim was to evaluate the potential of simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) for an improved monitoring of soil health advances in the context of carbon farming strategies. For this purpose, an on-farm comparison of soil health in ten conservation agricultural systems with adjacent conventional farms was performed based on STA and thermal measures were related to key biological and physical indicators for monitoring soil functions. Using an autocorrelation-based approach, we identified independent thermal indicators, revealing that carbon farming efforts predominantly increased labile soil organic matter fractions in the range of 300–400 °C, while thermally more recalcitrant fractions did not respond to farming system transformation. Similarly, most soil health indicators revealed highest correlation with temperature ranges of mass loss of labile organic matter fractions. The relation of STA with commonly used soil health indicators was highest for soil organic carbon (SOC, r=0.971) and total nitrogen (TN, r=0.981). However, also inference on microbial activity parameters such as dimethylsulfoxid reduction, microbial biomass carbon and substrate-induced respiration could be demonstrated with r>0.663. The results thus highlight key temperature ranges of organic matter stability for future soil monitoring tasks of climate change mitigation potentials of carbon farming and related advances in soil health.

Linkage between temperature sensitivity of SOM decomposition and microbial communities depends on soil fractions.

The magnitude of terrestrial carbon (C)-climate feedback largely depends on the temperature sensitivity of soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition (Q10). However, our understanding of determinants of Q10 for SOM fractions such as particulate and mineral-associated organic matter (POM and MAOM, respectively) is still inadequate. Particularly, it remains unclear whether microbial effects on Q10 are fraction-dependent, which induces large uncertainties in projecting soil C dynamics. Here, we conducted large-scale topsoil sampling on the Tibetan Plateau, in combination with SOM fractionation and 300-day laboratory incubation to assess SOM fraction-dependent linkages between Q10 and microbial properties. We found that compared with MAOM, POM had larger Q10 and greater microbial diversity, and also structured distinct microbial communities as well as their co-occurrence patterns. Furthermore, associations of Q10 with microbial properties differed between the two SOM fractions. Bacterial community composition and relative abundance of bacterial keystone taxa affected Q10 for POM and MAOM respectively, while bacterial alpha diversity showed opposite relationships with Q10 for POM and MAOM. These findings highlight the necessity of incorporating SOM fraction-dependent microbial properties and their linkages with Q10 into Earth system models to accurately predict terrestrial C-climate feedback.

Temporal Variations in Fire Impacts on Characteristics and Composition of Soil-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter at Qipan Mountain, China.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM), the most reactive fraction of forest soil organic matter, is increasingly impacted by wildfires worldwide. However, few studies have quantified the temporal changes in soil DOM quantity and quality after fire. Here, soil samples were collected after the Qipan Mountain Fire (3-36 months) from pairs of burned and unburned sites. DOM contents and characteristics were analyzed using carbon quantification and various spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. Compared with the unburned sites, burned sites showed higher contents of bulk DOM and most DOM components 3 months after the fire but lower contents of them 6-36 months after the fire. During the sharp drop of DOM from 3 to 6 months after the fire, carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecule-like and highly unsaturated compounds had greater losses than condensed aromatics. Notably, the burned sites had consistently higher abundances of oxygen-poor dissolved black nitrogen and fluorescent DOM 3-36 months after the fire, particularly the abundance of pyrogenic C2 (excitation/emission maxima of <250/∼400 nm) that increased by 150% before gradually declining. This study advances the understanding of temporal variations in the effects of fire on different soil DOM components, which is crucial for future postfire environmental management.

Reclamation of coastal marshes to croplands shifts molecular composition of soil organic matter in the Bohai Rim

AbstractReclamation of coastal marshes to croplands lost massive reserves of soil organic matter (SOM). However, it is uncertain how reclamation shifts chemical composition of SOM and its size fractions. Here, we investigated this issue at two coastal marshes (Qilihai, degradation with seasonal waterlog; Beidagang, annual long‐term waterlog) along with adjacent long‐term reclaimed croplands on the coast of the Bohai Bay, China. Three SOM fractions: coarse particulate (cPOM, &gt;250 μm), fine particulate (fPOM, 53–250 μm), and mineral‐associated organic matter (&lt;53 μm) were analyzed by pyrolysis‐gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Compared with the Qilihai marsh, the Beidagang marsh had higher SOM contents and lower proportions of microbial‐derived N‐containing compounds, which was attributed to the waterlogging‐induced weaker decomposition. Reclamation decreased the SOM contents (−53.6% to −63.3%) and proportions of lignin in cPOM (−44% to −52%) at both sites. However, reclamation‐induced shifts of molecular composition of SOM between the two sites diverged. At the Qilihai site, reclamation decreased the relative abundances of N‐containing compounds (−28%) but increased the proportions of lipids (+17%) and phenolics (+40.7%) in mineral‐associated organic matter. At the Beidagang site, reclamation decreased the proportions of monocyclic aromatics (−60.3% to −70.2%), but increased the relative abundances of N‐containing compounds (+175% to +407%) in all fractions. By contrast, the molecular composition of SOM at the two croplands had covergent pattern. In conclusion, despite of marsh locations with different waterlogging conditions, long‐term reclamation of wetlands to croplands generated convergent patterns in storage and molecular composition of SOM, which was attributed to the similar cropland cultivation.

Analysis of organic and mineral nitrogen, total organic carbon and humic fractions in Ferralsols: an approach using Vis-NIR-SWIR, MIR and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy

This work aimed to develop suitable predictive models for ammonium, nitrate, total nitrogen, total organic carbon and soil humic fractions, for Ferralsols, using Vis-NIR-SWIR, MIR and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopic techniques in conjunction with machine learning algorithms, Cubist, PLSR, Random Forest and Support Vector Machine. Chemical analyzes were carried out to determine nitrate, total nitrogen, total organic carbon and chemical fractionation of soil organic matter, as well as spectral analyzes using Vis-NIR-SWIR spectroscopy, MIR and X-ray fluorescence. The spectroscopy results were processed using RStudio v. 4.1.3, applying Cusbist, PLSR, Random Forest and Support Vector Machine machine learning algorithms to create predictive models and describe spectral curves and Pearson correlation. Of the prediction models developed for nitrogen, total organic carbon and humic fractions, the PLSR and Support Vector Machine algorithms presented the best predictive performances. The descriptive analysis of the spectra identified the main absorption bands and the location of the bands sensitive to the attributes of interest. The correlation analysis proposed that the use of Vis-NIR-SWIR, MIR and XRF spectroscopic techniques were effective in predicting the contents of nitrogen, total organic carbon and humic fractions in soil with a medium sandy texture. However, it is important to highlight that each technique has its characteristic mechanism of action, Vis-NIR-SWIR and MIR detect the element based on overtones and fundamental tones, while XRF is based on the atomic number of the elements or elemental association.

Effect of soil management on carbon stock and soil aggregation in an area of natural regeneration and surrounding systems in the Atlantic Forest biome

This study aimed to quantify total organic carbon (TOC), carbon of humic substances (HS), and their stocks and evaluate the soil structural stability of areas with different uses under sandy loam soil texture. Soil samples were collected from managed areas and a reference area: Permanent Pasture (PP), No-Till (NT), Private Natural Heritage Reserve in the process of natural regeneration (PNHR) and Native Forest (FN). Dry mass analysis, carbon stock quantification, chemical fractionation of soil organic matter and soil aggregation were carried out. The NF area had the highest deposition of litter mass (ML). The PP and NT areas had the highest bulk density (Bd). TOC and Stock-C contents were higher in PNHR, followed by NF, and stratification index (STRATI) was also higher in the regeneration area. The NT, PNHR, and NF areas had a higher proportion of carbon fulvic acid fraction (C-FA) than carbon humic acid fraction (C-HA), but the fraction with the highest representation in all areas was carbon humin fraction (C-HUM). The PP, PNHR, and NF areas obtained the best aggregate stability indicators, as well as a higher proportion of macroaggregates, with the NT area having low aggregate stability. Recovery of C contents was observed in recent years in the area of PNHR, leading to a greater storage of C, which shows a quantitative recovery of C in the soil in this area after four years of natural regeneration. Furthermore, the PP and NT areas present a lower capacity for C sequestration, mainly due to the management conditions. Keywords: aggregate stability, climate change, crop production, soil quality.

Long-term different fertilization practices restructured the functional carbon pools in a paddy soil through distinct mechanisms

Fertilization is a common management practice for improving soil organic matter (SOM), which is a crucial indicator of soil fertility. Nevertheless, how long-term fertilization affects functional SOM fractions and its mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, a 12-year field experiment, initiated in 2011, was conducted in Xinzhu village, Zhejiang province, China. Four different fertilizer treatments (without any fertilizers application, Control; sole application of inorganic fertilizers, NPK; combined application of NPK with cattle manure, NPKM; and combination of NPK fertilizers and return of rice straw, NPKS) were selected in this field trial. Functional carbon (C) pools, microbial community structure and SOM composition in both topsoil (0−15 cm) and subsoil (15−30 cm) were explored using the physical and chemical fractionation, phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) analysis and solid-state 13C-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometry (13C NMR) assays. Compared to the control, the NPK combined with organic amendments had significantly higher organic carbon contents of unprotected pools (cPOM and fPOM) in both topsoil (39−277 %) and subsoil (43.1−91.3 %), respectively. Organic carbon accumulated the most within iPOM (1.99 g kg−1 soil) and H-d(Silt+Clay) fractions (1.41 g kg−1 soil) under NPKM in the topsoil, suggesting that physical and chemical protection played the pivotal role after manure addition. Furthermore, NPKM increased the abundance of bacterial and fungal PLFAs in both topsoil (31.4 % and 24.5 %) and subsoil (173 % and 175 %), while NPKS elevated the alkyl/O-alkyl C ratio but reduced the aromaticity in topsoil, compared to inorganic fertilization alone. Partial least squares path modelling showed that fertilization had a direct impact on silt+clay associated C (0.6) in topsoil, POM-C (0.76) in subsoil, and microbial community structure (0.88 and 0.87) in both soil layers. Redundancy analysis revealed that in the NPKM treatment, the key factors affecting functional carbon pools were the total PLFA and the ratio of gram-positive to gram-negative bacterial PLFA, while for the NPKS treatment, it was the alkyl C/O-alkyl C ratio. In conclusion, long-term fertilization had a strong effect on functional carbon fractions through multiple mechanisms in different soil layers, involving changing microbial community and SOM composition.

Particulate organic matter predicts spatial variation in denitrification potential at the field scale

High spatiotemporal variability in soil nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes challenges quantification and prediction of emissions to evaluate the climate change mitigation outcomes of sustainable agricultural practices. Triggers for large, short-lived N2O emission pulses, such as rainfall and fertilization, alter soil oxygen (O2) and nitrate (NO3–) availability to favor N2O production via denitrification. However, the organic C (OC) needed to fuel denitrification may exhibit subfield variation that constrains the potential for high denitrification rates to occur, leading to spatial variation in N2O hot moments. We tested the hypothesis that the particulate organic matter (POM) fraction of soil organic matter (SOM) controls subfield variation in denitrification potential by regulating availability of dissolved organic C (DOC), the form of OC used by denitrifiers. Among 38 soil samples collected across a maize field in central Illinois, USA, we found that potential denitrification rate was best predicted by POM C concentration (R2 = 0.35). Using multiple linear regression analysis that included other soil properties as explanatory variables, we found that POM C fraction of bulk soil (mg POM C/g SOC) was the most important predictor based on regression coefficient size (P < 0.01). Our results, which provide support for our hypothesis, suggest that consideration of the link between C and N cycling may be a key to predicting spatiotemporal variation in soil N2O emissions when denitrification is the dominant N2O source process.

Stabilization of soil organic matter following the impact of selected tree species in temperate climate

The species composition of a forest stand has a significant impact on the biophysicochemical properties of soil. The aim of our research was to determine the relationship between the fractional composition of soil organic matter (SOM) and the composition of leachates from soil influenced by various tree species. In our research, we assumed that the fractions of SOM are strongly positively correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen and the ionic composition of leachates. Our study was conducted in a common garden experiment with eight different tree species. The research included the analysis of vertical variability in the composition of SOM fraction in relation to the leachates composition. The research covered the organic horizon (O), humus mineral horizon (A) and enrichment horizon (B). Our findings confirmed the differentiated impact of the studied tree species on the amount of light and the heavy fraction − mineral associated fraction of SOM. The species composition of the forest stand significantly influenced the amount of released DOC, as well as pH values and the content of selected cations and anions in the leachates from various genetic soil horizons. The amounts of C and N in the SOM fraction and the ionic composition of the leachates change with the depth. C and N of the labile and stable fractions were strongly positively correlated with the amount of DOC and N in the leachates. In order to initiate the stabilization of organic matter, it is worth using deciduous species such as Norway maple, sycamore maple and small-leaved lime. The results of our research may find practical application in planning the species composition of a tree stand, especially under changing climate conditions.

Co-located ecological data for exploring top- and subsoil carbon dynamics across grassland-woodland contrasts

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a soil health indicator and understanding dynamics changing SOC stocks will help achieving net zero goals. Here we present four datasets featuring 11,750 data points covering co-located aboveground and below-ground metrics for exploring ecosystem SOC dynamics. Five sites across England with an established land use contrast, grassland and woodland next to each other, were rigorously sampled for aboveground (n = 109), surface (n = 33 soil water release curves), topsoil, and subsoil metrics. Commonly measured soil metrics were analysed in five soil increments for 0–1 metre (n = 4550). Less commonly measured soil metrics which were assumed to change across the soil profile were measured on a subset of samples only (n = 3762). Additionally, we developed a simple method for soil organic matter fractionation using density fractionation which is part of the less common metrics. Finally, soil metrics which may impact SOC dynamics, but with less confidence as to their importance across the soil profile were only measured on topsoil (~5–15 cm = mineral soil) and subsoil (below 50 cm) samples (n = 2567).

Opposing patterns of carbon and nitrogen stability in soil organic matter fractions compared to whole soil

AbstractNitrogen (N) released from soil organic matter (SOM) is quantitatively important for crop uptake, even when adequate fertiliser N is supplied. Understanding of SOM has shifted to recognise distinct fractions that correlate with properties such as turnover time, carbon (C) and N content, and chemical composition. Yet, how these fractions relate to N supply from SOM is poorly understood. This study aimed to link N mobilisation and C stability in coarse (≥50 μm) and fine (≤50 μm) fractions, and evaluate the roles of these fractions in supplying N in cropping soil. Soils from long‐term continuous cotton, cotton‐vetch, and cotton‐wheat rotations and a nearby uncleared site (NV) were separated into coarse and fine fractions, left as whole soil, or dispersed and freeze‐dried as a fractionation control. Initial C chemistry in fractions and whole soils was measured by solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy. N mobilisation and CO2 loss were measured over a 14‐day incubation experiment. In the cropping soils, net immobilisation of N was measured in the separate fractions, while net mobilisation was found in the whole soils. In the NV soil, N mobilisation was greater in the fine fraction. C mineralisation followed the order fine fraction &gt; fractionation control = coarse fraction &gt; whole soil. C stability was best explained by physical protection within whole soil structure rather than chemical recalcitrance or mineral stabilisation. The results revealed an unexpected contrast between C and N mineralisation from SOM fractions and demonstrated the importance of soil aggregates for SOM stability. We show a cautionary impact of fractionation on C and N dynamic, highlighting the need for further research to understand the synergistic behaviour of SOM fractions in whole soils.
