Residue and Risk Assessment of Imidacloprid and Chlorantraniliprole in Open Field and Greenhouse Celery

The residue levels and risk assessment of imidacloprid (IMI) and chlorantraniliprole (CAP) in celery grown under open field and greenhouse cultivation were investigated. Both pesticides were used through foliar application and soil drench application at the recommended dose (RD) and 10-fold recommended dose (10RD). The half-lives of IMI and CAP in celery were 1.9 to 5.8 days and 4.3 to 6.5 days after foliar application, respectively, and the dietary risk quotients of IMI and CAP were 14.8 to 18.3% and 1.0 to 1.2%, respectively. For soil drench application, the half-lives of IMI and CAP in soil were 17.5 to 28.5 days and 15.1 to 23.7 days, respectively. Celery plants were able to absorb both insecticides from the soil. The highest concentrations of IMI in celery plants were 0.12 to 0.24 mg kg-1 (RD) and 0.34 to 0.39 mg kg-1 (10RD), and those for CAP were 0.0081 to 0.015 mg kg-1 (RD) and 0.028 to 0.057 mg kg-1 (10RD). Based on the highest residues of IMI and CAP in celery, the dietary risk quotients of IMI and CAP were 15.0% (RD) to 15.6% (10RD) and 1.0% (RD and 10RD) after soil drench application, respectively. The observed bioconcentration factors were 1.38 to 2.11 (IMI) and 0.35 to 0.48 (CAP), indicating that celery accumulated IMI more easily than CAP. The foliar and soil applications of IMI and CAP in celery at the RD and 10RD do not pose a safety risk to consumers.

Excretion of non-metabolized insecticides in honeydew of striped pine scale

Honeydew production is a characteristic of soft scales and other hemipteran insects. Honeydew has the capacity to alter the ecology of predators and parasitoids because it is used as a food resource and can contain insecticidal proteins from hemipteran host plants. We examined honeydew excreted by the striped pine scale (Hemiptera: Coccidae), Toumeyella pini (King), after feeding on pine trees treated with systemic insecticides to determine whether they could eliminate insecticidal compounds in honeydew. Imidacloprid and spirotetramat were applied at labeled rates to soil or foliage. Water sensitive paper was used to measure honeydew production and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to analyze excreted insecticide concentrations. Foliar and soil applications of imidacloprid caused a 25-fold reduction honeydew produced by scales six days after treatment (DAT). In contrast, spirotetramat treatments did not affect honeydew production. Parent compounds of both insecticides were detected in honeydew. However, on imidacloprid treated plants, these compounds were detected at similar concentrations in honeydew collected at 4 DAT from soil and foliar treatments. Imidacloprid was only detected from soil treatments at 8 DAT. Similarly, the spirotetramat parent compound was found 4 DAT after soil and foliar treatments, but only at 8 DAT in foliar treatments. At this time the concentration of spirotetramat in honeydew was six-fold higher than at 4 DAT. We conclude that striped pine scales excrete insecticides in honeydew even when the toxicant greatly reduces honeydew production. Honeydew excretion is thus a mechanism of bioaccumulation and has the potential to harm honeydew-feeding organisms.

Effects of Soil-Applied Imidacloprid on Asian Citrus Psyllid (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) Feeding Behavior

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), is one of the most important pests of citrus (Citrus spp.) because of its status as a vector of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (Las), the bacterium associated with citrus greening disease. The use of insecticides for vector control is the primary method of managing the spread of this pathogen. Imidacloprid is an insecticide commonly applied to the root zone of young citrus trees to provide systemic protection from pests. The effects of imidacloprid on feeding behavior of D. citri have not been studied in much detail. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of imidacloprid application on feeding behavior of D. citri and to determine whether use of this systemic insecticide could have any effect on pathogen transmission by D. citri. A direct current electrical penetration graph monitor was used to record D. citri feeding behaviors for 12-h periods on mature and young leaves of imidacloprid-treated and -untreated citrus seedlings. Overall, compared with untreated plants, the feeding behavior of D. citri was disrupted on imidacloprid-treated plants via reduction in the number of probes, as well as durations of average probes, initial stylet contact with phloem, phloem salivation, and phloem ingestion. The results of this study demonstrate that soil applications of imidacloprid can reduce the probability of citrus plants becoming inoculated with Las through a reduction in the number and duration of phloem salivation events by D. citri. Furthermore, Las acquisition from infected citrus is greatly reduced as a result of decreased phloem ingestion by D. citri on imidacloprid-treated plants.

Soil Application of SAR Inducers Imidacloprid, Thiamethoxam, and Acibenzolar-S-Methyl for Citrus Canker Control in Young Grapefruit Trees.

Soil applications of inducers of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, or acibenzolar-S-methyl, at various rates and application frequencies, were evaluated for control of citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri in a field trial of 3- and 4-year-old 'Ray Ruby' grapefruit trees in southeastern Florida. Reduction of foliar incidence of canker produced by one, two, or four soil applications of imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acibenzolar-S-methyl was compared with 11 foliar sprays of copper hydroxide and streptomycin applied at 21-day intervals. In the 2008 and 2009 crop seasons, canker incidence on each set of vegetative flushes was assessed as the percentage of the total leaves with lesions. By the end of the 2008 season, despite above-average rainfall and a tropical storm event, all treatments significantly reduced foliar incidence of citrus canker on the combined spring-summer-fall flushes. Sprays of copper hydroxide and streptomycin were effective for reducing canker incidence on shoot flushes produced throughout the season compared with the untreated control, whereas soil-applied SAR inducers reduced foliar disease depending on rate, frequency, and timing of application. Except for the treatment of four applications of acibenzolar-S-methyl at 0.2 g a.i. per tree or two applications of imidacloprid, SAR inducers were ineffective for reducing foliar disease on the flushes that were present during the tropical storm. In 2009, all treatments significantly reduced the incidence of foliar canker on the combined spring-summer-fall flushes but not all treatments of spring-summer flushes with SAR inducers were effective compared with the untreated control. Hence, depending on rate, frequency, and timing of application, soil-applied SAR inducers reduced incidence of canker on foliar flushes of young grapefruit trees under epidemic conditions.

Soil application of imidacloprid and related SAR-inducing compounds produces effective and persistent control of citrus canker

Soil application of the systemic insecticide imidacloprid (Admire®, Bayer Crop Science) produced season-long control of citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas citri sbsp. citri. Imidacloprid is a neo-nicotinoid that breaks down in planta into 6-chloronicotinic acid, a compound closely related to the systemic acquired resistance (SAR) inducer isonicotinic acid. Potted Swingle citrumelo seedlings (Citrus paradisi × Poncirus trifoliata) were treated with imidacloprid and the SAR inducers, isonicotinic acid, and acibenzolar-s-methyl as soil drenches or with acibenzolar-s-methyl as a foliar spray 1week prior to inoculation of immature leaves with X. citri sbsp. citri. Seedlings were re-inoculated four times over a 24-week period. SAR induction was confirmed by expression of the PR-2 gene (β-1,3 glucanase). Soil drenches of imidacloprid, isonicotinic acid, and acibenzolar-s-methyl induced a high and persistent up-regulation of PR-2 gene expression and reduced the number of canker lesions for up to 24 weeks compared to 4 weeks for foliar acibenzolar-s-methyl. Soil applied inducers of SAR reduced canker lesions up to 70% compared with the untreated inoculated plants. Lesions on leaves were small, necrotic, and flat compared to pustular lesions on inoculated untreated plants. Populations of X. citri sbsp. citri per leaf were reduced 1–3 log units in soil-treated plants compared to inoculated untreated plants.

Soil-Applied Imidacloprid Is Translocated to Nectar and Kills Nectar-Feeding <I>Anagyrus pseudococci</I> (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae)

Behavior was altered and survivorship was reduced when parasitoids, Anagyrus pseudococci (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), were fed flowers from buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum L. (Polygonaceae), treated with soil applications of imidacloprid (Marathon 1% G). Parasitoids at 1 d had significantly reduced survivorship of 38 +/- 6.7% on label rate and 17 +/- 4.2% on twice label rate compared with 98 +/- 1.2% on untreated flowers. Parasitoids trembled 88% on label rate and 94% on twice label rate compared with 0% on untreated flowers. Residue analysis on a composite sample of 425 flowers showed that imidacloprid concentration was 6.6 +/- 1.0 ppm (16 ppb/flower) in label rate, 12.3 +/- 2.7 ppm (29 ppb/flower) in twice label rate, and 0 ppb in untreated flowers. The hydroxy metabolite concentration was 1.1 ppm (2.4 ppb/flower) in label rate, 1.9 ppm (4.4 ppb/flower) in twice label rate, and 0 ppm in untreated flowers. The olefin metabolite concentration was 0.2 ppm (0.5 ppb/flower) in label rate, 0.5 ppm (1.1 ppb/flower) in twice label rate, and 0 ppm in untreated flowers. Soil-applied imidacloprid used at flowering may be translocated to nectar in higher concentration compared with the imidacloprid seed treatment Gaucho. Considerable research has studied effects of Gaucho-treated canola, sunflower, and maize on behavior and mortality of Apis mellifera L. In our laboratory, we showed that translocation of imidacloprid to flowers reduced survivorship and altered behavior of pink lady beetle, Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer (Smith and Krischik 1999) and green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea Stephens (Rogers et al. 2007).

Residual Toxicity of Imidacloprid to Hawthorn Lace Bug, Corythuca cydoniae, Feeding on Cotoneasters in Landscapes and Containers

Abstract Cotoneasters are important and valuable landscape plants. They are severely attacked by hawthorn lace bug (Corythuca cydoniae) in landscapes and nurseries. Imidacloprid has a wide range of activity against many kinds of insect pests. We were interested in determining if cotoneasters treated with soil applications of imidacloprid in landscapes and containers remained toxic to hawthorn lace bugs for more than one growing season. Cotoneasters planted in landscapes were less damaged by lace bugs in the year that imidacloprid was applied and in the following year. We suspect that residual toxicity of leaves of cotoneasters particularly to the nymphs of lace bugs as the cause. Cotoneasters grown in containers demonstrated toxicity to lace bugs for almost 800 days after the application of imidacloprid to the soil. These data greatly extend the known period of efficacy for imidacloprid in controlling hawthorn lace bug on cotoneasters. Clearly, lace bugs are controlled for a minimum of two years. By reducing the need for repetitive applications, a single application of imidacloprid can reduce time, labor and material costs associated with managing this important pest of cotoneasters.

Effects of Pesticide Applications and Cultural Controls on Efficacy of Control for Adult Japanese Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) on Roses

Cultural and chemical controls were evaluated to determine their ability to deter feeding by Japanese beetles, Popillia japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), on floribunda type roses, Rosa ‘Acadia Sunrise’. Roses were arranged in field plots and exposed to resident adult beetle populations. Cultural controls were designed to block the feeding-induced aggregation response by manually removing beetles and/or damaged blooms from rose plants. Azadirachtin, carbaryl, and imidacloprid were evaluated in field and laboratory trials. In no-choice laboratory assays, foliar applications of azadirachtin caused low rates of morbidity to adult beetles and were unable to deter feeding. Foliar-applied carbaryl and soil-applied imidacloprid caused high rates of morbidity and reduced feeding injury. In the field, foliar sprays of azadirachtin and carbaryl, deterred feeding on foliage under low beetle pressure (maximum of 29% defoliation in untreated controls), when applied weekly after first beetle flight or every 2 wk after 5% injury was reached. A single foliar application of these materials at the 5% injury level did not significantly reduce peak defoliation. Soil applications of imidacloprid also deterred foliar feeding in the field. Blooms were more difficult to protect with both foliar- and soil-applied insecticides with only weekly application of foliar insecticides providing significant reductions in bloom injury. Removing beetles and/or blooms provided marginally greater reductions in leaf and flower injury. This suggests that blocking the feeding-induced aggregation response of Japanese beetles can provide only modest levels of control in roses where both flowers and feeding-induced volatiles recruit beetles to plants.

Improved chemical control ofCapnodis tenebrionis andC. carbonaria in stone-fruit plantations in Israel

Nine compounds and three modes of applications were tested to improve the control of twoCapnodis spp.,C. tenebrionis L. and C.carbonaria Klug (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), in local stone-fruit plantations. The best result was obtained by azinphos-methyl applied as a foliar spray. Suitable chemicals for dusting were methiocarb, azinphos-methyl and carbosulfan applied to the stem in late spring or prior to fruit harvest. Soil application of imidacloprid as a systemic insecticide is successful for protection of young plantations and nurseries. C.tenebrionis was less susceptible thanC. carbonaria to the tested insecticides.

Residual Activity of lmidacloprid Controlling Colorado Potato Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Three Species of Potato Colonizing Aphids (Homoptera: Aphidae)

Field tests done between 1992 and 1994 indicated that imidacloprid applied at 0.03 g (AI)/m to the soil can control overwintered adult Colorado potato beetles, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), and their larval progeny. Summer generation adults colonizing potatoes in treated fields can be controlled by foliar applications of imidacloprid at 50 g (AI)/ha at intervals of 7 d or more. Soil applications of imidacloprid at 0.03 g (AI)/m also provided effective control of the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas);green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer; and buckthorn aphid, Aphis nasturlii Kaltenbach, for at least 62-65 d after plant emergence. Foliar applications of imidacloprid at a rate of 50 g (AI)/ha required that the aphids be exposed for at least 5 d to attain 50-75% control. Imidacloprid applied in the furrow at a rate of 0.03 g (AI)/m reduced significantly the number of nymphs produced per aphid for each of the 3 species tested early in the season, but not for aphids exposed to plants >1 mo old. Imidacloprid applied to the soil at a rate of 0.03 g (AI)/m has a long residual activity against Colorado potato beetle adults and larvae, the potato aphid, the green peach aphid, and the buckthorn aphid. This pattern makes imidacloprid an effective control agent for insect pest management on potatoes, but its comparatively slow mode of action may limit its ability to reduce the spread of virus diseases unless the ability of treated aphid vectors to disperse and probe is also reduced.
