Electromagnetic spectrum monitoring of LTE channels based on SDR portable sensor: preliminary analysis

This paper presents preliminary research for the implementation and testing of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) sensor with electromagnetic spectrum monitoring capabilities for measuring signals specific to the Long-TermEvolution (LTE) mobile communications standard. The proposed sensor is developed on the ADALM Pluto SDR platform - and is designed to acquire a bandwidth of at least 20MHz. To determine the spatial extent of the measurements, the sensor also includes a GPS (Global Positioning System) module. The hardware control of the sensor is performed both in stationary variant using a laptop and in mobile mode using a low-cost module - Raspberry Pi. Present findings suggest that the designed SDR solution represents a reliable and low-cost alternative for real-time spectrum monitoring of wideband signals like the case of 4G-specific signals. The cost of the whole implemented monitoring system is about EUR 330.

Reconfigurable Three Functional Dimension Single and Dual-Band SDR Front-Ends Using Thin Film BST-Based Varactors

This paper presents a performance evaluation of single and dual-band software-defined radio (SDR) front-ends using commercially available barium strontium titanate (BST) thin film to control SDR receivers dynamic range and mitigate interference. Firstly, an SDR front-end solution using a BST-based single-band bandpass filter (BPF) is developed to manage in-band attenuation according to the input power. Secondly, a dual-band SDR front-end to avoid high power interference with its spectral content on the below side of the second band is designed. This device is performed with a BST-based dual-band BPF providing independent control of the power limiting capabilities of the first and second bands. The BST component introduces a dependence on bias voltage, frequency, and input power. Consequently, by applying a 0 V bias, it is possible to target interferers between 700 MHz up to 1 GHz and attenuate them more than 7 dB at 40 dBm. The frequency dependence is defined by the second band, which retains its filtering performance while performing interference cancellation in the first band. This SDR solution implements a three functional dimension device in the upper MHz with a power-dependent insertion loss, high threshold power level, and frequency selectivity.

Design of a Scalable 4G Portable Network Using Low Cost SDR And Raspberry Pi

Of late, Software Defined Radio (SDR) approach has become an effective means to design high data rate wireless systems for a range of applications. There are methods with which low cost SDR based 4th generation (4G) or long term evolution (LTE) systems can be designed. Using low cost Raspberry Pi systems, the SDR aided 4G systems can be designed for high data rate communication. The work is related to the design of a 4G wireless system using low cost SDR solutions and integrated to a programmable controller based on a Raspberry Pi. Experimental results show that the system is effective in a range of conditions

We propose a project of the meter wavelength range solar spectropolarimeter designed for a ground-based network developing for space weather forecast. The Software-Defined Radio (SDR) solution is chosen to meet such instrument network requirements as specification identity, low cost, possibility of controlling and transmitting data remotely via the Internet. Along with these requirements, the proposed SDR solution allows us to measure Stokes I and V easily, which contrasts the proposed instrument with e-CALLISTO network spectropolarimeters, most of which can record only one linear polarization. Deployment of such instruments at various longitudes will allow continuous observation of type II bursts, often related to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) — the most geoeffective solar activity events that affect the space weather significantly.

Software defined radio - 20 years later: Part 1 [Guest Editorial

It has been two decades since the publication of the seminal tutorial Software Radio Architecture in IEEE Communications Magazine. The evolution of Software Defined Radio (SDR) systems had profound impact both in military and multi-standard commercial space. The intent of the feature topic is to capture key elements of the evolution of the enabling technologies as well as SDR solutions for flexible and reconfigurable wireless platforms.

Fixed- and Floating-Point Processor Comparison for MIMO-OFDM Detector

The evolution toward software-defined radio (SDR) technologies, in particular, cognitive radios, is leading toward the need to support multiple radio solutions with the same baseband processing resources. This implies not only a huge design effort, but also a shift from hardware to software design flavored tool chains. In this paper, a hardware complexity and energy dissipation are analyzed by implementing three programmable processor architectures that support 32- and 12-bit floating-point and 16-bit fixed-point arithmetics. The processors are based on the transport triggered architecture (TTA) that has a very low programmability overhead. We programmed a recently introduced selective spanning with fast enumeration (SSFE) soft-output detector for these processors. The processors are capable to achieve data rates required in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency- division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) 3G LTE system with a small energy dissipation. The analysis shows that at the same goodput rate a floating-point implementation can achieve a lower gate count and a better power efficiency than a fixed-point design. Combined with tool chain benefits, the floating-point arithmetic is becoming attractive for future SDR solutions.

Exploration of Soft-Output MIMO Detector Implementations on Massive Parallel Processors

Emerging Software Defined Radio (SDR) baseband platforms are based on multiple processors with massive parallelism. Although the computational power of these platforms would theoretically enable SDR solutions with advanced wireless signal processing, existing work implements still rather basic algorithms. For instance, current Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) detector implementations are typically based on simple linear hard-output and not on advanced near-Maximum Likelihood (ML) soft-output detection. However, only the latter enables to exploit the full potential of MIMO technology. In this work, we explore the feasibility of advanced soft-output near-ML MIMO detectors on massive parallel processors. Although such detectors are considered to be very challenging due to their high computational complexity, we combine architecture-friendly algorithm design, application specific instructions and instruction-level/data-level parallelism explorations to make SDR solutions feasible. We show that, by applying the proposed combination of techniques, it is possible to obtain SDR implementations which can deliver data rates that are sufficient for future wireless systems. For example, a 2 × 4 Coarse Grain Array (CGA) processor with 16-way Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) can deliver 192/368 Mbps throughput for 2 × 2 64/16-QAM transmissions. Finally, we estimate the area and power consumption of the programmable solution and compare it against a traditional Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) approach. This enables us to draw conclusions from the cost perspective.

A Single Sideband RF-Modulator for Digital-IF Transmitter

The limitation of the single-sideband rejection ratio (SSRR) performance of transmitters based on I/Q mismatching due to high frequency signals has been investigated. The proposed single-sideband radio frequency-modulator (SSM) is capable of generating a single sideband frequency without implementing a quadrature local oscillator which displaces a phase of a local oscillating signal by 90deg at a high frequency. This technique is promising for radio transmission with a SSRR of more than 60 dBc. Also, the architecture of digital-intermediate frequency transmitter using the proposed SSM can be applied for a future software-defined radio solution supporting multiband and multimode wireless communications.
