Chemical and physical modification of graphene oxide nano-sheets using casein, Zn-Al layered double hydroxide, alginate hydrogel, and magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications

In our study, we developed a novel nanobiocomposite using graphene oxide (GO), casein (Cas), ZnAl layered double hydroxide (LDH), sodium alginate (Alg), and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. To synthesize the GO, we used a modified Hummer's method and then covalently functionalized its surface with Cas protein. The functionalized GO was combined with as-synthesized ZnAl LDH, and the composite was conjugated with alginate hydrogel through the gelation process. Finally, we magnetized the nanobiocomposite using in-situ magnetization. The nanobiocomposite was comprehensively characterized using FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, and XRD. Its biological potential was assessed through cell viability, hemolysis, and anti-biofilm assays, as well as its application in hyperthermia. The MTT assay showed high cell viability percentages for Hu02 cells after 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation. The nanobiocomposite had a hemolytic effect lower than 3.84 %, and the measured bacterial growth inhibition percentages of E. coli and S. aureus bacteria in the presence of the nanobiocomposite were 52.18 % and 55.72 %, respectively. At a concentration of 1 mg.mL−1 and a frequency of 400 kHz, the nanocomposite exhibits a remarkable specific absorption rate (SAR) of 67.04 W.g−1, showcasing its promising prospects in hyperthermia applications.

Eugenol-infused alginate nanoemulsion: A fluorescent label for direct food shelf-life extension and non-contact detection of food spoilage through biogenic amine sensing

The implementation plan of extending the shelf life of food while ensuring food safety is playing an increasingly important role in promoting global solutions to food waste. Here, we have logically created a new eugenol nanoemulsion to sense spoilage and extend the shelf life. The nano lotion (Eu/SA) was loaded with sodium alginate nanoparticles as carrier, eugenol as antibacterial agent and antioxidant. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was utilized concurrently as an indicator by simply mixed with Eu/SA nanoemulsion, then physically deposited on a commercial filter membrane to create smart fluorescent labels. Shrimp with and without the Eu/SA nanoemulsion coating had their freshness monitored using a non-contact tagging technique. And through smartphone integrated with RGB (red/green/blue) analysis for digitization, it was found that the RGB of uncoated shrimp was greater than that of treated shrimp. Additionally, without coating treatment, thiobarbituric acid (TBA), pH and viable bacterial count (TVC) of Shrimp all exceed the established. Eu/SA nanoemulsion offers a more appealing monitoring and preservation integration platform for the food safety industry.

Numerical analysis of thermophoretic particle deposition on 3D Casson nanofluid: Artificial neural networks-based Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm

Abstract The aim of this research is to provide a new computer-assisted approach for predicting thermophoresis particle decomposition on three-dimensional Casson nanofluid flow that passed over a stretched surface (thermophoresis particle decomposition on three-dimensional Casson nanofluid flow; TPD-CNF). In order to understand the flow behavior of nanofluid flow model, an optimized Levenberg–Marquardt learning algorithm with backpropagation neural network (LMLA-BPNN) has been designed. The mathematical model of TPD-CNF framed with appropriate assumptions and turned into ordinary differential equations via suitable similarity transformations are used. The bvp4c approach is used to collect the data for the LMLA-BPNN, which is used for parameters related with the TPD-CNF model controlling the velocity, temperature, and nanofluid concentration profiles. The proposed algorithm LMLA-BPNN is used to evaluate the obtained TDP-CNF model performance in various instances, and a correlation of the findings with a reference dataset is performed to check the validity and efficacy of the proposed algorithm for the analysis of nanofluids flow composed of sodium alginate nanoparticles dispersed in base fluid water. Statistical tools such as Mean square error, State transition dynamics, regression analysis, and error dynamic histogram investigations all successfully validate the suggested LMLA-BPNN for solving the TPD-CNF model. LMLA-BPNN networks have been used to numerically study the impact of different parameters of interest, such as Casson parameter, power-law index, thermophoretic parameter, and Schmidt number on flow profiles (axial and transverse), and energy and nanofluid concentration profiles. The range, i.e., 10−4–10−5 of absolute error of the reference and target data demonstrates the optimal accuracy performance of LMLA-BPNN networks.

Spray-Dried Mucoadhesive Re-dispersible Gargle of Chlorhexidine for Improved Response Against Throat Infection: Formulation Development, In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation.

Drug delivery to the buccal mucosa is one of the most convenient ways to treat common mouth problems. Here, we propose a spray-dried re-dispersible mucoadhesive controlled release gargle formulation to improve the efficacy of chlorhexidine. The present investigation portrays an approach to get stable and free-flowing spray-dried porous aggregates of chlorhexidine-loaded sodium alginate nanoparticles. The ionic gelation technique aided with the chlorhexidine's positive surface charge-based crosslinking, followed by spray drying of the nanoparticle's dispersion in the presence of lactose- and leucine-yielded nano-aggregates with good flow properties and with a size range of about 120-350nm. Provided with the high entrapment efficiency (87%), the particles showed sustained drug release behaviors over a duration of 10h, where 87% of the released drug got permeated within 12h. The antimicrobial activity of the prepared formulation was tested on S. aureus, provided with a higher zone of growth inhibition than the marketed formulation. Aided with an appropriate mucoadhesive strength, this product exhibited extended retention of nanoparticles in the throat region, as shown by in vivo imaging results. In conclusion, the technology, provided with high drug retention and extended effect, could be a potential candidate for treating several types of throat infections.

Pickering emulsions stabilized by egg white protein-alginate nanoparticles: Freeze-thaw stability after heating

Egg white protein (EWP)-sodium alginate (SA) nanoparticles were fabricated by controlled heating (75 °C, 10 min) of an aqueous solution containing EWP and SA (pH 7.0). The nanoparticles formed had a relatively small average diameter (350–460 nm) and polydispersity index (PDI< 0.3). Hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions were the main forces involved in particle formation as determined by Fourier transform infrared spectra and intrinsic fluorescence analyses. The composite nanoparticles had contact angles (θ) of about 90°, which allowed them to be used as particle-based emulsifiers to form and stabilize concentrated oil-in-water Pickering emulsions (70% oil). Inverted fluorescence microscopy showed that the composite nanoparticles adsorbed to the surfaces of the oil droplets in these emulsions. Rheological analysis showed that the Pickering emulsions had predominantly elastic-like properties and exhibited strong shear thinning behavior. The apparent shear viscosity, elastic modulus, and viscous modulus of the emulsions depended on particle size and alginate concentration. A heat treatment (90 °C, 20 min) greatly increased the viscoelastic properties of the emulsions, which was attributed to protein unfolding and aggregation. Heating improved the resistance of the Pickering emulsions to freezing and thawing. This study provides a simple and convenient method to fabricate semi-solid Pickering emulsions using natural ingredients. These emulsions may have a variety of applications in foods, including as edible inks for 3D food printing.

Sodium alginate polymer nanoformulation as promising carrier for berberine delivery: Synthesis, morphology and in-vitro evaluation

The present study focused on the fabrication of berberine sodium alginate nanoparticles with a combination approach of conventional nanoprecipitation method with ionic complexation to improve its poor water solubility. The optimization of nanoformulation was done by Central Composite Design and was evaluated for DLS, entrapment efficiency, morphology, FTIR, DSC, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial efficacy and drug release kinetics. The particle size of optimized nanoformulation was in the range of 20 nm to 100 nm with an entrapment efficiency of 94.47%. Antibacterial efficacy of optimized nanoformulation was checked by measuring the zone of inhibition for both gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria. The optimized nanoformulation showed enhanced antimicrobial activity compared with berberine and control nanoformulation against all bacterial strains. Also, a sustained release of berberine over about 48 h was achieved with nanoformulation and the drug release followed zero-order kinetics. Thus, berberine sodium alginate nanoparticles can potentially increase the oral bioavailability of berberine and can be utilized for controlled delivery thereby reducing the side effects.

Synthesis and characterization of Alg/Gel/n-HAP/MNPs porous nanocomposite adsorbent for efficient water conservancy and removal of methylene blue in aqueous environments: Kinetic modeling and artificial neural network predictions

In this study, a new porous nanocomposite adsorbent for water conservancy was synthesized using the freeze-drying technique to adsorb a cationic dye (Methylene Blue) in an aqueous environment. The nanocomposite adsorbent was synthesized using natural polymers, gelatin, and sodium alginate, and hydroxyapatite and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles was incorporated into the polymer network to improve mechanical properties and increase the surface-to-volume ratio. To confirm the structure and morphology of the sample, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were employed. In addition, the magnetic properties of the synthesis of MNPs and porous nanocomposite were determined using value stream mapping (VSM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) was studied as a function of effective physical and variable parameters, such as time, temperature, pH, and initial concentration. The synthesized porous nanocomposite adsorbent exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 473.2 mg g−1 and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Additionally, the maximum adsorption capacity was observed at an initial concentration of 534.9 mg g−1. The adsorbent was also sensitive to temperature changes and was well-described thermodynamically and isothermally by the Freundlich isotherm model. Two artificial neural networks (ANNs) were also developed to investigate the properties of the synthesized nanocomposites. In the first ANN, the properties of the nanocomposites, including pore size, porosity, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, were predicted based on the variations in the weight percentages of gelatin and hydroxyapatite. In the second ANN, the effects of changes in temperature and initial concentration on the adsorption of MB by the synthesized nanocomposite samples were predicted. The ANNs' predictions indicated that increasing the weight percentage of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and gelatin enhances the physical, mechanical, and adsorption performance of the synthesized porous nanocomposites. The best results were achieved for the sample containing 40 wt % of gelatin and 30 wt % of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. Furthermore, the ANN models demonstrated that increasing the temperature and initial concentration resulted in an increase in the amount of MB adsorbed.

Alginate and alginate silver nanoparticles as bioadsorbent agents to remove Fe (II) ions from aqueous solution

Sodium alginate and alginate silver nanoparticles were utilized as adsorbents to eliminate Fe (II) ions from aqueous solutions. Biosorption capacity was established through the use of serial bioadsorption experiments. The effect of different investigated factors in bioadsorption included contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, and various metal ion concentrations. Alginate silver nanoparticles were more effective than sodium alginate in removing Fe (II) from an aqueous solution. The removal efficiency of Fe (II) by nanoparticles was 80%, while by alginate was 54%. The optimal conditions for bioadsorption of Fe (II) were pH 4, contact time 150, and an adsorbent dose 0.01 g. Adsorption isotherm was fitted to Langmuir isotherm (R 2 = 0.995) rather than Freundlich isotherm. Also, UV and FT-IR before and after Fe (II) adsorption were performed to confirm the bioadsorption process.

Optical authentication strategy using sodium alginate nanoparticles encapsulating lanthanide-doped aluminate

Fluorescence has been reported as an interesting encoding approach to boost the efficacy of anticounterfeiting measures for commercial goods. Herein, we detail the preparation of an encoding ink made from alkaline earth-doped aluminate (AEA) encapsulated into sodium alginate (SA) nanoparticles (NPs), which can be employed for cutting-edge encoding purposes. Nanoparticles of SA were produced and encapsulated with AEA. AEA@SA nanoparticle-based authentication inks provide an excellent level of photostability and durability. Therefore, the fluorescence emission of the nanocomposite ink containing AEA@SA NPs was both robust and reversible. By altering the AEA@SA nanoparticle concentration, a range of composite inks with varied emission properties were presented. Both CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) Lab and photoluminescence experiments proved that sheets printed with a uniform coating of nanocomposite inks are transparent under daylight but become green under UV irradiation. According to a morphological research performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), AEA particles have sizes between 12 and 18 nm, whereas AEA@SA NPs have diameters between 200 and 350 nm. The morphological analysis of prints was analyzed using a variety of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The ink rheology and mechanical characteristics of prints were examined. Green (517 nm) and colorless (365 nm) wavelengths were observed for emission and excitation, respectively. For the manufacturing of anticounterfeiting commercial items, the current optical authentication strategy can be described as a very efficient technique for authentication purposes.

Injectable Nanocomposite Hydrogels with the NIR-Triggered Low-Temperature Photothermal Effect and Low-Dose Antibiotic Release

Bacterial infection threatens tissue wound healing in clinical practice, so it is essential to construct a safe and efficient antibacterial dressing. In this work, an injectable efficient antibacterial hydrogel is designed to treat bacterial infection disease through the near-infrared (NIR)-triggered low-temperature photothermal effect (below 50 °C) and low-dose antibiotic synergistic therapy. A series of nanocomposite hydrogels (COTC) for antibacterial therapy are synthesized by Schiff base consisting of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), tobramycin (TOB), and cobalt sulfide nanoparticles. The released TOB is controlled in a low dosage through the degradation of Schiff base between TOB and OSA. The biocompatibility assays prove that the hydrogels have excellent biocompatibility. Under NIR irradiation for 10 min, the COTC hydrogels display efficient and controllable photothermal properties (48 °C) and excellent antibacterial efficiency of 99.92 and 99.73% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Therefore, these injectable synergistic antibacterial COTC hydrogels exhibit excellent potential for infected wound healing as wound dressing.

Preparation of Nanoparticles Loaded with Quercetin and Effects on Bacterial Biofilm and LPS-Induced Oxidative Stress in Dugesia japonica.

Quercetin is a kind of flavonol compound, which has been widely concerned because of its good pharmacological effects. However, its poor water solubility and poor oral absorption limit its application. To address the above problems, the optimal technological conditions for preparing quercetin-loaded chitosan sodium alginate nanoparticles (Q-CSNPs) were obtained through single-factor experiment method. Q-CSNPs were characterized by particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Biofilm experiment evaluated the antibacterial activity of five different concentrations of Q-CSNPs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging experiments determined their antioxidant activity. The effect of Q-CSNPs labeled with FITC on the oxidative stress of planarian was determined. The results showed that quercetin was successfully encapsulated and had good antibacterial and antioxidant capacity in vitro. In vivo experiments of planarians also showed that Q-CSNPs could inhibit the oxidative stress induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and especially alleviate the decrease of CAT activity and the increase of MDA content in planarians induced by LPS. After being supported by future in vivo studies, this preparation will provide research possibilities for the development of quercetin nano-drugs, quercetin dietary supplement, and so on.

Couple Stress Sodium Alginate-Based Casson Nanofluid Analysis through Fick’s and Fourier’s Laws with Inclined Microchannel

Casson nanofluid plays a vital role in food industries with sodium alginate nanoparticles. That is why many researchers used Casson nanofluid in their study. Due to this, the main objective of this study is to investigate the inclined microchannel flow of a Casson nanofluid based on sodium alginate (SA) under a few stresses. Because the plate at y = d is stationary and the plate at y = 0 is in motion, the fluid flows. Physically existent things utilize partial differential equations as a method of derivation. By using dimensionless variables, the underlying PDEs are dimensionless. Applying Fourier’s and Fick’s laws to the time-fractional model makes the classical model dimensionally stable by generalization. A generalized fractional model is solved using the Laplace and Fourier integral transformations. In addition, the parametric influence of other physical elements, such as the Casson parameter, coupling velocity, temperature, and stress parameters, is considered (Grashof, Schmidt, and Prandtl numbers). Concentration distributions are shown using graphs and discussed with accompanying text. We compute and describe the Sherwood number, rate of heat transfer, and skin friction. It is concluded that skin friction and Nusselt number can be enhanced by adding nanoparticle. Also, the fractional derivative makes the study more realistic by incorporating Fick’s and Fourier’s laws as compared to the classical one.

Application of Box-Behnken Experimental Design in Process Parameter Optimization for Production of Berberine HCl loaded Chitosan Coated Sodium Alginate Nanoparticles

Psoriasis is the most common chronic autoimmune disease. The pathophysiology, genetics, comorbidities, and biologic therapies of plaque psoriasis have seen the most rapid advances. Only a tiny percentage of the supplied dose reaches the target site in most situations (traditional dosage forms), while the balance is distributed throughout the body according to its physicochemical and biochemical properties. The current worker used nanotechnology to carry out study on the formulation and evaluation of nanoparticulate Berberine HCl loaded Chitosan coated sodium alginate nanoparticles. The Berberine HCl Nanoparticles were optimised using the Box-Behnken design. Particle size (68.82-275.78nm), zeta potential ((10.90)– (47.1 mv), percentage yield (80.75 percent - 96.21percent), percentage drug entrapment (50.95 -77.28percent), and percentage release in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer (60.848 - 95.869percent) were all found to be positive with Berberine HCl nanoparticles. Nanoparticles were found to be spherical in shape with rough surfaces, according to surface morphology (SEM). In a pH 7.4 phosphate buffer, an in-vitro drug release investigation on an optimised batch of Berberine HCl nanoparticles (BE-OPT) revealed 96.242percent (12 h) release. The release kinetic investigation with the optimised batch of Berberine HCl nanoparticles (BE-OPT) demonstrated that Higuchi's release kinetic model was followed. The chosen (optimised) nanoparticles were sealed in amber-coloured bottles with cotton plugs and caps. All were kept for six months at 40±2°C/75±5% RH and examined for their physical appearance and drug content at certain intervals.

Chitosan and sodium alginate nanoparticles synthesis and its application in food preservation

Nano-chitosan and nano-sodium alginate were prepared. Transmission electron microscopy was used to test the nano-chitosan and nano-sodium alginate morphology and their effects against pathogens and microorganisms. Nano-chitosan and nano-sodium alginate were evaluated as edible coating to improve the microbiological quality of Ras and soft white cheeses during ripening. Nano-chitosan showed maximum antibacterial and antifungal activities with an inhibition zone of 29 mm for Staphylococcus aureus and 12 mm for Aspergillus niger. Sodium alginate nanoparticles treated with 2% acetic acid showed a higher antimicrobial impact than 1% and 1.5% glacial acetic acid at 40 mg/mL. The minimum inhibitory and lethal concentrations of nano-chitosan and nano-sodium alginates were 40, 80 mg/mL, and 80, 160 mg/mL for Staph. aureus and Sal. enteritidis, respectively. The highest decreasing percentage of yeast and fungi was observed in Ras cheese coated with nano-sodium alginate. Chitosan and sodium alginate nanoparticles' edible coating might be promising in food preservation.

Adsorption of Cu2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ by engineered biochar: Preparation, characterization, and adsorption properties

AbstractLemonwood‐derived biochar was created by biomass pyrolysis (600°C) and modified with zeolite, sodium alginate, and magnetic nanoparticles to design an efficient adsorbent. The characterizations of the nanocomposite were studied employing X‐ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, EDAX, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer. The sorption of Zn(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) ions from an aqueous single metal solution was evaluated for the influence of contact time, adsorbent dose, solution pH, initial concentration, and individual adsorption. Four isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin‐Radushkevich) were employed to analyze the equilibrium data by nonlinear regression. The capacity for adsorption of Zn(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) at pH = 4, contact time 90 min, and 293°K from wastewater is as high as 98.22, 109.37, and 80.15 mg/g, respectively. The kinetics analysis demonstrated that the adsorption mechanism agreed with the pseudo‐second‐order rate law. In addition, the adsorption of metal ions onto engineered adsorbent exhibited that the process is exothermic, and with increasing the temperature, the adsorption capacity decreased, showing the spontaneous nature. The adsorbent was regenerated and reused three consecutive in adsorption–desorption without considerable loss of its adsorption capacity. The results indicated that it could be employed as an effective adsorbent for eliminating metal ions from an aqueous media.

Eco-friendly Synthesis of Hydrogel Nano-composites for Removal of Pollutants as a Model Rose Bengal Dye

In this study, hydrogel Nano-composite was prepared by free radical polymerization in the presence of sodium alginate (SA) and TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPS) as a surface catalyst. Potassium per sulfate (KPS) was used as a reaction initiator. Crosslinking agent methylene bis-acrylamide, the structure and morphology its hydrogel Nano-composites were studied using Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Several factors that affected the adsorption process were studied, including effect of pH, effect of salt concentration and temperature. Also studied was the swelling behavior in two acidic mediums (pH=7, pH=1.2), the best surface swelling medium was at (pH=7). The adsorption isotherms were studied, and the result obeyed as favorable by Fruendlich isotherm depended on the value of (R2= 0.9404).

Development of generalized Fourier and Fick’s law of electro-osmotic MHD flow of sodium alginate based Casson nanofluid through inclined microchannel: exact solution and entropy generation

Electro-osmotic flow via a microchannel has numerous uses in the contemporary world, including in the biochemical and pharmaceutical industries. This research explores the electroosmotic flow of Casson-type nanofluid with Sodium Alginate nanoparticles through a vertically tilted microchannel. In addition, the transverse magnetic field is also considered. In this flowing fluid, the influence of heat and mass transmission is also explored. The aforementioned physical process is represented by partial differential equations. Utilizing suitable dimensionless variables for nondimensionalized. Furthermore, the non—dimensional classical system is fractionalized with the use of generalized Fourier and Fick's law. Generalizations are made using the Caputo derivative's description. The analytical solution of the velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles is obtained by combining the methods of Laplace and Fourier. Interestingly, the influence of several physical characteristics such as the fractional parameter, Casson fluid parameter, the thermal and mass Grashof numbers, and the zeta potential parameter is displayed. Moreover, the results show that the volume fractional of nanoparticles enhances the rate of heat transfer up to 39.90%, Skin friction up to 38.05%, and Sherwood number up to 11.11%. Also, the angle of inclination enhances the fluid velocity.

Water and oil-resistant paper materials based on sodium alginate/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/polyvinyl butyral/nano-silica with biodegradable and high barrier properties

Despite many technical challenges in the development of safe and environmentally friendly food packaging paper materials with excellent water and oil resistance using simple methods, producing paper-based functional materials using bio-based polymers is currently an important topic in the food packaging industry. In this study, novel water and oil-resistant coatings for the paper were developed through the combination of sodium alginate (SA), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (HSNPs). To impart oil-repellency to paper, SA and HPMC were first mixed uniformly and coated on the base paper, which was pre-treated with calcium chloride solution. A compact and tough coating layer was formed on paper due to the hydrogen bonding between SA and HPMC molecules, and the crosslinking between SA and Ca2+ ions in the base paper. High water resistance of the paper was achieved through the coating of PVB and HSNPs on top of the coating of SA/HPMC. The final coated paper demonstrated outstanding oil resistance (kit rating: 12/12), water resistance (Cobb value: 4.23 g/m2), low water vapor transmission rate (100 g/m2·24 h), and improved mechanical properties. This fluorine-free, and biodegradable barrier paper will find excellent applications in the food packaging industry.

Anti-fouling and highly permeable thin-film composite forward osmosis membranes based on the reactive polyvinylidene fluoride porous substrates

Currently, thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes are widely developed for wastewater purification, although it is a pressing subject to further improve its permeability, selectivity, and fouling resistance. Here, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were modified with dopamine (DA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) via surface segregation during non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). And then some residual amine groups on the as-prepared PVDF/DA-PEI membranes participated in the reaction with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid chloride (TMC) by interfacial polymerization (IP), forming the TFC FO membranes. Furthermore, they were co-deposited by tannic acid (TA) and taurine, engineering the tTFC FO membranes. The introduction of DA and PEI in the substrate enhances the selectivity of the membrane having a low specific reverse solute flux (Js/Jw), and the TA-taurine layer improves the anti-fouling of the surface. Especially, tTFC6 (6 represents the weight concentration of DA and PEI in the substrate) has an excellent performance has a large Jw of 42.10 ± 0.86 L m−2 h−1, a low Js/Jw of 0.06 ± 0.02 g/L, and a high flux recovery (FRR) of more than 90% using bovine serum albumin (BSA), sodium alginate (SA), and SiO2 nanoparticles as model contaminants. The results provide new insights into the preparation of highly permeable and anti-fouling FO membranes.
