Sustainable Development of Entrepreneurship through Operational Risk Management: The Role of Corporate Social Responsibility

The goal of this paper was to study the role of corporate social responsibility (by the example of responsible HRM) in the sustainable development of entrepreneurship through operational risk management. The correlation analysis method was used to find a close connection between the number of employees and operational risks to international companies from “Global 500” in 2021–2023. The regression analysis method was used to compile the economic and mathematical model of the sustainable development of international entrepreneurship, which demonstrated wide opportunities for operational risk management through responsible HRM. The method of trend analysis allowed determining scenarios of the sustainable development of international entrepreneurship, which demonstrated that in the Decade of Action, the success of operational risk management is largely determined by the activity of the use of responsible HRM practices. The main conclusion is that responsible HRM facilitates the reduction of operational risks to modern companies, but practices of responsible HRM have different impacts on operational risks to companies: some practices (creation of knowledge-intensive jobs and stimulation of the innovative activity of employees through support for research talents) reduce operational risks, while some practices (stimulation of the growth of labor efficiency and attraction of female researchers to the staff) have a contradictory impact, and other practices (development of human capital through corporate training) increase operational risks. The theoretical significance is because the paper discloses the previously unknown consequences of responsible HRM as a special sphere of manifestation of corporate social responsibility for the operational risks of companies. The practical significance is because the compiled scenarios disclose the perspective of the sustainable development of companies through the improvement of the management of their operational risks based on responsible HRM. The managerial significance is that the proposed recommendations from the authors for the practical implementation of the optimistic scenario can be milestones for companies and can be used to improve the practice of operational risk management of companies.

The impact of TQM on financial and non-financial performance: the mediating role of corporate social responsibility

PurposeThis article aims to examine the direct and indirect effect among total quality management (TQM), corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial and non-financial performance.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical data were collected from a survey of 120 Tunisian certified firms using questionnaires. Structural equation path modeling PLS-SEM) was performed to test the research hypotheses.FindingsThe results indicate that TQM has no direct effect on financial performance (FP), while they positively impact non-financial performance (NFP) and CSR. The study also shows that CSR positively and significantly influences FP and NFP. In addition, it reveals the positive impact of FP on NFP. Furthermore, the results reveal an indirect effect of TQM on financial and non-financial performance through CSR.Originality/valueThe empirical study bridges the gap in the literature by analyzing the direct and indirect effect between TQM, CSR and performance in a single model. It also highlights the important role of CSR between TQM and financial and non-financial performance in the context of emerging countries.

Extreme Weather and Firm Market Value: Roles of Corporate Social Responsibility and Stock Analyst Attention

ABSTRACT The outbreak of extreme weather events is increasing in frequency for the last decade, resulting in tremendous human and industrial losses worldwide. Evaluating and managing the effects of such events are highly urgent matters for firms, but the literature on this topic is limited. In this study, the effects of extreme weather events on the stock market performance of firms were estimated to provide a foundation for exploring how to manage such effects. From the perspective of the shareholder view, the heterogeneous effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on stock performance associated with extreme weather events were examined. Data on natural disasters that were caused by six types of extreme weather and occurred between 2001 and 2021 in China were used to construct a database of 2,718 Chinese listed manufacturing firms and 23,529 observations regarding the potential effects by extreme weather events. An event analysis indicated that the extreme weather events bring an average of 0.97% drop in the stock performance of potentially affected firms for the month that the event starts and the next month. A subsequent cross-sectional analysis revealed that a high CSR level is associated with low market value during extreme weather events, while a high level of stock analyst attention alleviates the negative effect of CSR on the stock performance of extreme weather events. This study enriches the existing literature and offers practical insights for managers in the fields of CSR and operations management, highlighting the complex dynamics between CSR activities, analyst attention, and stock market performance during extreme weather events.

Volume and value of technological innovation: the role of corporate social responsibility and business architectural factors

The understanding of firm‐level drivers of technological innovation has been concentrated on a firm's core business related factors. How a firm's corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives impact a firm's technological innovation is notably understudied in the literature, even though business firms are increasingly recognizing the multifaceted impact of CSR on various corporate outcomes including technological advancements. This study bridges this gap by linking CSR to firm technological innovation as measured by both innovation volume and value. Furthermore, a set of business architectural factors, including market emphasis, related/unrelated diversification, and vertical integration, are incorporated as moderating factors to generate a granular understanding pertaining to CSR's innovation implications. We collected a large sample set, employed a series of robust empirical methods, and found that CSR has a consistently positive impact on both innovation volume and value, and the magnitude of these relationships differs across various business architectural factors. This study contributes to the innovation literature, strategic CSR theory, instrumental stakeholder theory, and provides useful guidelines for business practices.

Board gender diversity and accounting conservatism: the role of corporate social responsibility

Purpose This paper aims to provide deeper insights into the relationship between board gender diversity (BGD) and accounting conservatism by exploring the mediating role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) underlying this relationship. Design/methodology/approach The authors sample 10,252 firm-year observations from 932 publicly listed firms in 15 European countries over the 2010–2020 period. The authors conduct several models for panel data, applying mediation mechanisms, the Heckman two-stage model and the generalized method of moments and instrumental variable regressions to test the research hypotheses and account for endogeneity problems as well as unobservable heterogeneity. Findings Based on an integrated theoretical framework that draws insights from agency, resource dependence and stakeholder theories, the authors establish a positive and significant relationship between BGD and accounting conservatism, which is significantly mediated by CSR. The authors provide empirical evidence for the prior inconsistent results on the gender diversity-conservative accounting link and suggest that BGD promotes effective corporate governance and enhances CSR performance, which in turn, leads to higher conservatism in financial reporting. Practical implications The findings have important implications for regulators, policymakers and managers in understanding the drivers to ensure and control the quality of financial reporting. The results alert firms to the need to focus not only on the importance of BGD but also on CSR activities to ensure higher earnings reporting quality. Social implications The results are significant in encouraging a higher presence of women on corporate boards, enhancing CSR performance and drawing social attention to mitigating earnings management practices through higher conservatism in financial reporting. Originality/value This paper recognized a gap in the literature not yet examined and contributed to the body of knowledge through the mediating role of CSR in the relationship between gender diversity and accounting conservatism.

Co-creation and brand happiness: insights from a Korean perspective

PurposeExtant literature has extensively explored the factors driving consumer emotions. This study aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse by elucidating the influence of co-creation on consumer emotions. Specifically, this investigation seeks to probe how co-creation activities, orchestrated by firms, impact consumers' emotional experiences, with a particular emphasis on brand happiness. By addressing this research gap, the author aims to shed light on the understudied domain of co-creation's effects on consumer emotions, notably brand happiness, a subject that warrants further investigation in prior scholarly works.Design/methodology/approachUsing surveys as the primary data collection method, the author assesses consumer perceptions, emotions and brand social responsibility. The initial study aims to discern the mediating role of brand social responsibility in the link between co-creation and brand happiness. Subsequently, the second study evaluates the moderating effect of brand social responsibility in the relationship between co-creation and brand happiness. These systematic investigations enable us to uncover the intricate dynamics between co-creation, brand social responsibility and consumers' emotional experiences, culminating in a deeper understanding of the phenomena at play.FindingsThe empirical findings of this study unveil the substantial impact of co-creation on consumers' brand happiness. Engaging in co-creation with a brand leads to a notable elevation in consumers' perceptions of the brand's social responsibility. Importantly, this heightened perception of brand social responsibility positively influences their emotional affinity toward the brand, resulting in increased happiness. Furthermore, this investigation sheds light on an intriguing aspect – the role of an individual's personal expressiveness. It accentuates how personal expressiveness acts as an augmenting factor, strengthening the effect of co-creation on brand happiness.Originality/valueThis research addresses the relatively underexplored topic of brand happiness, which constitutes a fundamental aspect of consumers' experiences. By shedding light on the intricate interplay between co-creation, consumer emotions and happiness, this research introduces an essential theoretical framework that emphasizes the pivotal role of co-creation in driving consumer emotional experiences and overall happiness. As such, this study presents a comprehensive and valuable contribution to the growing body of knowledge in consumer behavior and marketing.

The impact of corporate social responsibility in technological innovation on sustainable competitive performance

The twenty-first century has seen an increase in stakeholders, highlighting the need to discuss the role of corporate social responsibility in technological innovation. The objective of the current research is to examine the role that corporate social responsibility in technological innovation plays in enhancing the sustainable competitive performance of firms. The idea that digital transformation mediates the relationship between corporate social responsibility in technological innovation and sustainable competitive performance is proposed in this study. Additionally, the mastery climate may act as a boundary condition that strengthens the positive relationship between CSR and digital transformation. The data were collected in Chinese firms through a questionnaire. The results supported the mediation and moderation hypotheses, confirming that digital transformation mediates the relationship between corporate social responsibility in technological innovation and sustainable competitive performance. The mastery climate moderates the relationship between corporate social responsibility in technological innovation and digital transformation. The results have implications for theory and practice. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

YOUTHS’ WORD-OF-MOUTH IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY: ROLES OF GREEN PROMOTION AND GREEN BRAND LOYALTY

Purpose – This paper investigates the mediating role of green brand loyalty between green brand image and word-of-mouth (WoM) and the moderating role of green promotion and brand social responsibility among Vietnamese youth. Research methodology – Using an online questionnaire from 1st October 2022 to 31st December 2022, 740 valid responses were collected. Findings – The study reveals that green brand loyalty mediates the relationship between brand trust and WoM. Additionally, green promotion significantly moderates the relationship between brand trust and green brand loyalty. The study concludes that green promotion is vital in influencing consumers’ trust in the brand, subsequently increasing their loyalty. Research limitations – This study has not categorized the groups of environmentally friendly products used by young Vietnamese to see if there is a difference. Practical implications – These results provide significant implications for brand managers to enhance the effectiveness of WoM. Originality/Value – Green promotion is an effective strategy for brands to regain consumers’ loyalty and maintain a close relationship between consumers and green brands. Additionally, green brand loyalty emphasizes the significance of green promotion for developing green companies and can serve as a conduit between customers and brands.

Green Business Strategy and its effect on Financial Performance: The mediating role of Corporate Social Responsibility

Organizations are increasingly integrating environmental concerns in their strategic plans. This research analyzes how green business strategy (GBS) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) impact financial performance (FP). In addition, we analyze the mediating role of CSR in the relationship between GBS and FP. The empirical application uses structural equation modeling on a sample of 300 manufacturing firms from Mexico. The results show positive and significant relationships between GBS, CSR and FP, while the significantly positive mediating role of CSR was also verified. Thus, the environmental objectives set by the GBS contribute to the FP of Mexican manufacturing firms. CSR also collaborates to this end but only partially by mediating the relationship between GBS and FP. The findings support the importance of incorporating environmental concerns in businesses' strategic planning in order to ensure not only economic but also social benefits through GBS and CSR activities.

Role of corporate social responsibility in the strategic development of the enterprise

The paper examines the role of corporate social responsibility in the strategic development of an enterprise. The need to ensure the strategic development of enterprises based on the principles of socially oriented growth has been proven. The relevance of the study of corporate social responsibility as a factor in the strategic development of the enterprise is substantiated. It is summarized that strategic development built on the principles of socially responsible business contributes to the maintenance of harmonious development not only of the economy, but also of society as a whole. The content of corporate social responsibility has been established through the selection of its constituent elements, namely: economic responsibility (balanced business management taking into account the interests of all stakeholders), social responsibility (ensuring fair and safe working conditions, promoting community development, supporting social initiatives, etc.) and environmental responsibility (conserving natural resources, reducing emissions and other environmental protection measures). The role of corporate social responsibility in the strategic development of enterprises has been established, which consists in the implementation of a number of important functions and tasks that contribute to the achievement of sustainable and successful development of the company. It is substantiated that the ambiguity of approaches to determining the significance of corporate social responsibility is determined by several factors: the subjectivity of assessment, the variability of measurements, the diversity of views, the type of activity and the field of development, the evolution of standards. It is well-founded that corporate social responsibility is a concept that recognizes that businesses have an ethical and social duty to society and the environment, including consumers, employees, local communities and the environment. The importance of corporate social responsibility in the formation of strategically oriented enterprises of a new type is summarized. It was concluded that corporate social responsibility reflects the socially responsible attitude of the enterprise, which is an important element of a favorable business environment and contributes to the sustainable development of the economy as a whole.

We investigate key thematic clusters, seminal works, influential authors, and collaboration patterns in the field. Additionally, we explore publication trends in leading journals and identify research lacunae and emerging trends that signal future scholarly directions. Our findings indicate a robust engagement with factors such as educational background, personal traits, and socio-economic impacts, including the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on entrepreneurial activity. The study also highlights potential new avenues for research in areas that have yet to become prominent within the existing literature, such as the role of risk perception, necessity entrepreneurship, passion, and social responsibility in shaping entrepreneurial motivation. This analysis provides a detailed landscape of the field, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the dynamic forces that foster and sustain entrepreneurial motivation in an ever-evolving global economy.

Linking consumer attitude with purchasing behavior via interpersonal influences: the role of corporate social responsibility

PurposeConsumer purchasing behavior (CPB) plays a crucial role within the hospitality sector, specifically in restaurants situated in China, as it directly impacts the performance and profitability of businesses. In this context, there is a need to assess the factors influencing CPB. Therefore, this research seeks to inspect the influence of consumer attitudes (CA) on interpersonal influences (II) and CPB. Additionally, seeks to explore the mediation of II and the moderation of corporate social responsibility (CSR).Design/methodology/approachThis study utilized cross-sectional data obtained through online surveys. To analyze the data, structural equation modeling was employed.FindingsThe research unveils a substantial and positive association between CA, II and CPB. It also found that II partially mediates CA and CPB association. Moreover, CSR was identified as a moderator in the connection between CA and CPB.Practical implicationsThe implications of this study are of great significance for companies operating in the hospitality industry. They indicate that cultivating favorable CA and promoting II, while considering CSR initiatives, can effectively augment overall purchasing behavior. As a result, it can contribute to the achievement of business success.Originality/valueThis study offers a unique perspective on the factors driving purchasing behavior, shedding light on how businesses can enhance their performance and profitability in this specific setting.

The critical study in vogue spells out the relationship between CSR and an established firm's financial performance. The study sample size is the CSR Award-winning companies of Pakistan. We have scientifically derived this research on CSR activities which are not directly affecting a firm's revenue, sales, operations, etc. The results interpreted that Award-winning-firm policies of CSR received an encouraging impact on Companies' financial performance, productivity, routine operations, and social policies. The contemporary study results invariably find that the best Award-winning CSR company's social legislation properly obtains meaningful contribution on social CSR activities since CSR (-1) merely enjoys a linear relation with CSR.

The Power of Responsibility: Unlocking the Potential of CSR in Hospitality’s Fight against Food Waste

This research focuses on the significant role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in shaping employees’ behavior towards the reduction of food waste in the hospitality industry that has been under scrutiny for its environmental impact. The study aimed at understanding how CSR, coupled with employees’ moral attitudes, admiration for their organization, and climate change awareness influences sustainable practices by realizing the complex interplay between company initiatives and personal psychology. The participants were staff members who worked in several hotels in China where there were active CSR programs. Using established scales, we collected 422 valid responses over three waves to strengthen our data collection process. Empirically, it was found that CSR directly influenced food-waste-reduction behavior. Additionally, it was discovered that this relationship was mediated by moral attitudes and employee admiration as well as moderated by awareness of climate change. The findings have substantial theoretical implications regarding the interaction between emotional and cognitive factors within the CSR framework to influence behavior among employees. This paves the way for creating well-rounded strategies that appeal to staff and encourage sustainability in the hotel business. While focused on China’s hospitality industry, this research creates room for future studies in other places around the world using various methods. The conclusions drawn underline the critical role of CSR in promoting environmental sustainability in the hospitality industry, providing a pathway for organizations to engage employees in meaningful and impactful sustainability initiatives.

Exploring the Mediating Role of Organizational Commitment in the Relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility and Employee Performance: Evidence from Henan's Universities

Aims: This study aims to examine the mediating role of organizational commitment in the relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and employee performance within Henan's universities, highlighting the strategic importance of CSR in enhancing organizational effectiveness and employee outcomes. Study Design: This study utilized a cross-sectional survey methodology to explore the relationships among Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Organizational Commitment (OC), and Employee Performance (EP) within Henan's higher education sector. A stratified random sampling approach was employed to select faculty and administrative staff from universities engaged in CSR initiatives. The analysis, conducted through Structural Equation Modeling and mediation analysis, aimed to understand both direct and indirect effects of CSR on employee performance, with a particular focus on the mediating role of organizational commitment. Place and Duration of Study: Zhengzhou University, Henan University, Henan Normal University, Henan Agricultural University and Henan Polytechnic University, in December 2023. Methodology: The study adopted a quantitative research design using a cross-sectional survey method to explore CSR's impact on organizational commitment and employee performance in Henan's universities. A stratified random sampling strategy was utilized to select faculty and administrative staff from universities engaged in CSR, aiming for a sample size of 328 to ensure statistical significance. Validated scales measured CSR, organizational commitment, and employee performance, with data analysis conducted through Structural Equation Modeling and bootstrapping for mediation effects. Results: In this study, the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Employee Performance (EP) and Organizational Commitment (OC) within Henan's universities was examined. Findings indicate that CSR positively influences EP both directly and via OC, serving as a mediator. Significant relationships were confirmed: CSR to EP (β=0.433), CSR to OC (β=0.825), and OC to EP (β=0.442), all highly statistically significant (p<0.001). Mediation analysis showed CSR impacts EP through OC, accounting for about 45.73% of the effect. This underscores CSR's dual role in enhancing performance directly and by fostering organizational commitment. Conclusion: This study not only underscores the pivotal role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in enhancing employee performance within Henan's universities but also sheds light on the crucial mediating role of Organizational Commitment (OC). The dual pathway through which CSR influences employee performance underlines the significance of integrating CSR into the core strategic management practices of educational institutions. It signals to university administrators and policy-makers that CSR initiatives are not just external obligations but essential strategies for cultivating a committed and high-performing workforce. This realization opens up avenues for universities to re-evaluate and strengthen their CSR strategies, ensuring they are aligned with both organizational goals and employee values. Moreover, it encourages educational institutions to view CSR as a lever for organizational improvement and a bridge to deeper engagement with employees, ultimately contributing to the advancement of educational quality and societal contributions.
