Drivers and Moderators of Social Media-Enabled Cooperative Learning in Design Education: An Extended TAM Perspective from Chinese Students

This study aims to explore the mechanisms through which social media influences the cooperative learning attitudes and academic performance of design students in the context of China’s collectivist culture, providing a basis for the application of social media in design education. Using the Extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the theoretical framework, a questionnaire survey of 305 students was conducted. Structural equation modelling and moderation effect analysis revealed that perceived usefulness, ease of use, enjoyment, and interactivity significantly influence students’ attitudes toward social media-based collaborative learning. This attitude directly enhances academic performance and is positively moderated by knowledge-sharing willingness and academic self-efficacy. This study validated the applicability of the extended TAM in online collaborative learning, revealing that positive attitudes toward collaborative learning can only effectively translate into academic outcomes when students possess sufficient knowledge-sharing willingness or self-efficacy. This provides empirical evidence for strategically leveraging social media in educational design.

A Study of Young People Aged 15-25 Use Different Emojis Depending on the Recipient

With the rise of the Internet, emojis play an important role in social media applications in our lives. The topic of our study is whether young people between the ages of 15 and 25 use different emojis depending on who they are communicating with. We used quantitative research methods to collect data about the use of social media emojis by this group of young people aged 15-25. In this study, it was found that about 68% of young respondents use different emojis depending on the group of people they are receiving them from, adjusting their use of emojis because older people may not understand emojis, fear of offending, or fear of others misunderstanding them, which suggests that they are aiming to try to match the audience's preferences as closely as possible so that they can more quickly understand what others are trying to convey. Secondly, when using emojis, young people will choose to use funny, cute, and exaggerated emojis with their friends and will prefer more formal and polite emojis with older people or on formal occasions, which shows that young respondents are conscious of choosing appropriate emojis according to who they are chatting with as well as the situation. The most unexpected result of this study was that face-to-face communication is becoming less and less common among young respondents, with digital communication methods dominating their lives. In addition, through the study, it is not difficult to find that emojis occupy an important position in the 15-25 young people's group. It enriches the way people communicate and convey their emotions. The small sample size of this study and the carelessness of individual fillers resulted in individual inaccuracies in the results, which will be strengthened in the future by increasing the sample size and diversifying the sample collection methods.

Security Vulnerability Assessment on Threads Application through Digital Forensics Analysis

The rapid emergence of new social media applications has introduced fresh vectors for cybercrime, highlighting the need for timely security vulnerability assessments. This paper presents a comprehensive security vulnerability assessment of Threads, a newly emerging social networking application, by examining its behaviour and data handling through a digital forensic analysis. The study followed a structured experiment which involved installing the the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications for Instagram and Threads on a Windows 11 device, conducting typical user activities between two test accounts, acquiring forensic disk images and memory dumps, capturing network traffic, followed by a digital forensic analysis of the discovered artifacts. The primary motivation behind this analysis is to uncover potential security vulnerabilities of the application through a forensic examination of data remnants left by the application. Data acquisition and analysis were carried out using tools such as FTK Imager, Autopsy, Belkasoft Evidence Center, Volatility 3 and Wireshark. The study revealed a range of security and privacy concerns related to the application’s data storage, memory usage, and network utilization. For instance, user-generated content and application metadata were found in application files without adequate encryption and sensitive user credentials were discovered, in plaintext. Additionally, insecure handling of backend communications and permissive CORS configurations were observed, introducing risks such as session hijacking and Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. Findings of this research underscore the need for improved security mechanisms in modern social media applications. This study provides valuable insights for developers, cybersecurity professionals, and digital forensic investigators to strengthen the security posture of current social networking applications.

Analysis of Social Media Addiction in Teens and Young Adults: A Recommendation Report

This study evaluates the objective and subjective data regarding phone and social media usage collected from eighty respondents’ personal cellular devices among teens and young adults. Young adults and adolescents were found to have a daily average screen time of 6.54 hours (SD = 2.74) with 96.3% of respondents reporting at least one social media application in their top three most used applications. Sixty percent of the respondents believe they are addicted to their phone, and sixty-six percent believe that it negatively impacts their grades. Seventy-five individuals (93.8%) reported experiencing one or more of the following: depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, body image, sleeping problems, social isolation, and emotional difficulties. Females exhibited greater use of social media than males, but these differences were not statistically significant, indicating that social media usage is high with consistently negative effects regardless of gender. The addictive behavior which is reinforced with social media usage creates a dopamine imbalance leading to poor self-perception, concentration, and poor sleeping habits, among other negative impacts. Thus, the disadvantages of social media far outweigh the advantages that are provided. School systems and families need to turn away from this hyper dependence on technology and social media to help teens and young adults experience proper sociological and psychological development, which in turn strengthens and improves their mental health and educational outcomes.

Para-Social Relationship Activity: Case Study in Treasure and Treasure Maker on The Weverse App on 2023-2024

In recent years, the entertainment industry has witnessed growth driven by technological advancements and innovative applications of social media. Among these developments, the rise of social media platforms like Weverse has revolutionized how fans and idols engage with each other. Treasure, a K-Pop group, and its fandom, Treasure Maker, utilize Weverse to foster para-social relationships that enable fans to perceive an emotional connection with their idols despite physical separation. This study aims to explain the interaction between fans and idols in the Weverse app. The theoretical framework for this study is based on foundational theories relating to para-social relationships, including Horton and Wohl's conceptualization of media figures influencing audience behavior and Stever's classification of three types of para-social interactions: task attraction, identification attraction, and romantic attraction. Using a qualitative descriptive case study approach, the researcher seeks to understand the para-social activities facilitated by the features in the Weverse app. This research shows that the presence of digital platforms such as Weverse is able to strengthen the para-social relationship between Treasure and its fans. All the interactions that occur have made fans feel emotional closeness, which also fosters loyalty as fans towards their idols.

Why is self-employment not perceived by senior women as a priority? A North African experience

Purpose This study aims to explore the reasons why self-employment is not prioritized by senior women within the Egyptian context. Design/methodology/approach The data were collected through semistructured interviews with a purposive sample of 36 senior women who engaged in entrepreneurial activities for a period following their retirement but subsequently ceased to retain access to their pensions. The data were analyzed using the Gioia methodology to systematically identify key patterns and themes emerging from the interviews. Findings The authors revealed three main categories of barriers that discourage senior women from pursuing self-employment: personal barriers, including excess weight, impatience and aversion to social media applications; economic barriers, such as reliance on state pensions and insufficient capital to initiate business ventures; and socio-cultural barriers, encompassing traditional gender roles and shifting priorities toward religious practices. These factors collectively contribute to the widespread overlooking of self-employment opportunities among senior women in Egypt. Originality/value The originality of this research lies in its identification of often-overlooked obstacles, namely, physical health challenges, religious commitments and entrenched gender norms, that significantly impede entrepreneurial intentions among women over the age of 60 in Egypt. By highlighting the stark divergence between the entrepreneurial reluctance of Egyptian senior women and the increasing self-employment trends observed among older populations in Western societies, this paper offers a culturally nuanced reevaluation of senior women’s entrepreneurship within the North African context.

Reuse of social media data in corpus linguistics

Abstract The use of very large social media datasets in corpus linguistics has obvious benefits. Such data represent a novel source of evidence when compared with structured digital text corpora. However, there is a clear need to assess critically how the effective reuse of data can be handled, how findings can be reproduced, and how results can be generalized. A relevant question concerns the presentation of data to ensure reproducibility and replicability. This article surveys the state-of-the-art of descriptions of data collection and methodological transparency in 30 studies that used Twitter/X as their data. The empirical section investigates how easy it would be to reproduce a study based on these descriptions. While we concentrate on evidence from one social media application, the discussion continues to a presentation of concrete steps that might be used to improve data management related to the reuse, discovery, and evaluation of social media data in general.

Combating Fake News with Cryptography in Quantum Era with Post-Quantum Verifiable Image Proofs

In an age of AI-generated content and deepfakes, fake news and disinformation are increasingly spread using manipulated or fabricated images. To address this challenge, we introduce Post-Quantum VerITAS, a cryptographic framework for verifying the authenticity and history of digital images—even in a future where quantum computers threaten classical encryption. Our system supports common image edits, like cropping or resizing, while proving that the image is derived from a legitimate, signed source. Using quantum-resistant tools, like lattice-based hashing, modified Poseidon functions, and zk-SNARK proofs, we ensure fast, privacy-preserving verification without relying on trusted third parties. Post-Quantum VerITAS offers a scalable, post-quantum-ready solution for image integrity, with direct applications in journalism, social media, and secure digital communication.

A Discourse Analysis of AI Narratives in Spanish Speakers' Social Media Platforms

This study examines how international news outlets frame artificial intelligence (AI) discussions on social media in Spanish-speaking Latin America, highlighting social media's role in shaping perceptions and attitudes. Fuchs (2024:35) conceptualises social media as techno-social systems in which information and communication technologies enable and constrain human activities that create knowledge produced, distributed, and consumed in a dynamic and reflexive process that connects technological structures and human agency. The paper centres on how discourses in social media are communicated to audiences when content about AI is distributed on those platforms, looking at the narratives embedded in those posts. This exploratory research uses critical discourse analysis to analyse how selected regional outlets address AI outside the Global North. It focuses on how news stories are published on the X.com (formerly known as Twitter) accounts of CNN Español, BBC Mundo, Infobae, and Telesur, two outlets coming from the Global North and two outlets originating in the Global South. Despite the growing popularity of platforms like TikTok and Instagram, X.com still fulfils the role of the digital public sphere, where it remains a popular social media application in Latin America with 57.5 million users (Statista, 2024). Using Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis, textual analysis, discourse practice, and social practice, the initial results of over 300 tweets found that AI is often framed using metaphors of competition and transformation, portraying it as a geopolitical contest and an unstoppable societal force. AI is also personified with human-like qualities, which can obscure the human and corporate influences behind its development. In addition, the study highlights distinctive patterns in how AI content is produced and consumed across social media platforms, where it uses expert opinions to legitimise its content. Finally, it reflects on how the editorial approaches of the selected outlets demonstrate how institutional ideologies and power structures influence the framing of AI. These findings contribute to the knowledge about journalism discourses and AI from the perspective of the Global South.

Predicting Mobile Payment Behavior Through Explainable Machine Learning and Application Usage Analysis

In the increasingly competitive mobile ecosystem, understanding user behavior is essential to improve targeted sales and the effectiveness of advertising. With the widespread adoption of smartphones and the increasing variety of mobile applications, predicting user behavior has become more complex. This study presents a comprehensive framework for predicting mobile payment behavior by integrating demographic, situational, and behavioral factors, focusing on patterns in mobile application usage. To address the complexity of the data, we use a combination of machine-learning models, including extreme gradient boosting, light gradient boosting machine, and CatBoost, along with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) to improve interpretability. An analysis of extensive panel data from Korean Android users reveals that incorporating application usage behavior in such models considerably improves the accuracy of mobile payment predictions. The study identifies key predictors of payment behavior, indicated by high Shapley values, such as using social networking services (e.g., KakaoTalk and Instagram), media applications (e.g., YouTube), and financial and membership applications (e.g., Toss and OK Cashbag). Moreover, the results of the SHAP force analysis reveal the individual session-level drivers of mobile purchases. These findings advance the literature on mobile payment prediction and offer practical insights for improving targeted marketing strategies by identifying key behavioral drivers of mobile transactions.
