The Inclusion of Nature of Science in South African Life Sciences and Physical Sciences School Curricula

Curriculum reform worldwide has often reflected changing perspectives on the teaching and learning of science. Such perspectives underline the notion that not only the teaching of science content knowledge is relevant but also the aims and methods scientists use to further their knowledge and the social context in which science is applied. We call this the ‘cognitive-epistemic’ and ‘social institutional aspects’ of science. They form the hard core of the nature of science (NOS) concept for curriculum reform. In South Africa, after years of Apartheid, a key focus of school science curriculum reform is for importance to be given to NOS due to the potential benefits of learning and understanding of NOS for students. This study analyses cognitive-epistemic and social-institutional categories of NOS in the South African Life Sciences and Physical Sciences school curricula. A critical finding for both Life Sciences and Physical Sciences curricula was the imbalance in the NOS categories. In the curricula, there is less presence of the social-institutional categories compared to the cognitive-epistemic categories. In general, there was poor interconnectedness amongst NOS categories, with the strongest interconnectedness revealed for the cognitive-epistemic categories ‘scientific practices’ and ‘methods and methodological rules’. Implications for the design of future curricula and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Strategy for Implementing Agricultural Extension Methods and Materials in the New Normal Era in Serang Regency, Banten Province

President Joko Widodo on March 24 2020, stated that even in a pandemic situation, the economic sector including agriculture must continue to move and produce by observing health protocols. The purpose of this study was to find out the strategy for implementing extension methods and agricultural extension materials that are in accordance with the new normal era in Serang Regency, in terms of technical, economic and social institutional aspects, as well as linking audience characteristics to the discussion, both on farm and off farm segments; to determine the appropriate agricultural extension model, and to determine the priority scale of the elements analyzed; The research method used is a mixed method, which combines descriptive-exploratory methods with the Analytical Hierarchy Process, supported by 37 participants located in Serang Regency. Based on the results of the analysis, the strategy for implementing extension methods and agricultural extension materials in the new normal era in Serang Regency, the priority criteria are on the technical aspect, and in terms of indicators, the material indicators are the main priority, followed by the second priority, namely the extension method indicator

Action research in a teacher education program: probing into pre-service elementary teachers’ understandings of scientific practices and teaching scientific practices

ABSTRACT The study presented here is an action research that was conducted in a science and technology teaching course in a pre-service elementary teaching program at a private university in Turkey aiming at improving the pre-service elementary teachers’ understanding of science and teaching science. In order to achieve this aim, an innovative approach, using Benzene Ring Heuristic (BRH) to introduce scientific practices (SPs) to pre-service elementary teachers was implemented in the study. This heuristic was used to illustrate the interrelatedness of cognitive-epistemic and social-institutional aspects of SPs in a holistic presentation. The data were gathered from various sources, including pre-service teachers’ posters, individual lesson plans, and individual interviews. The results suggest that the method helped the pre-service teachers have a coherent and organised understanding of SPs; however, despite the increase in the usage of discourse and social certification, they still have difficulties understanding these issues. In light of evidence gathered from this study, further research includes deliberate attempts to encourage the pre-service teachers to integrate discourse and social certification in their own instruction.

The Development and Validation of the Social Enterprise of Science Index (SESI): An Instrument to Measure Grasp of the Social-Institutional Aspects of Science

Significant gaps remain between public opinion and the scientific consensus on many issues. We present the results of three studies ( N = 722 in total) for the development and testing of a novel instrument to measure a largely unmeasured aspect of scientific literacy: the enterprise of science, particularly in the context of its social structures. We posit that this understanding of the scientific enterprise is an important source for the public’s trust in science. Our results indicate that the Social Enterprise of Science Index (SESI) is a reliable and valid instrument that correlates positively with trust in science ( r = .256, p < .001), and level of education ( r = .245, p < .001). We also develop and validate a six question short version of the SESI for ease of use in longer surveys.

Piag?m Kesultanan Palembang is one of the cultural heritage ini Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu province. This inscription issued by one of the Kanjeng Sultan during administration Kesultanan Palembang Darussalam in 1729 ?aka (1807 AD). This study aims to describe the result of study on the inscription of Piag?m Kesultanan Palembang related to the aspects of language and social institutions contained in Piag?m Kesultanan Palembang. The data collection methods applied in this research were observation , interviews, and literature studies as well as data processing method through Countextual and qualitative analysis. The Theories that is use is structuralism theories.Based on the analysis results it could be seen that the paleography aspect Piag?m Kesultanan Palembang used the script of shift Javanese and language. The spelling used was the spelling which had evolved in the past. The affixation types used in this Piag?m Kesultanan Palembang were : prefix: ka-, in-, a- and Confix: a – k?n. The aspects of social institutions mentioned in Piag?m Kesultanan Palembang namely political institutions which included the central level bureacucracy in which the supreme power was held by the Sultan. Legal institutions is also found in Piag?m Kesultanan Palembang that mentioned about states debts and receivables regulation, tribute payment, trading, the law of theft, fine of murder, in the event of prisoners escaping, treasure discoveries, and the people who become the slave in the Abdi Da?m Kesultanan.

This study is concentrated on a group of inscriptions currently stored in Bale Agung Kintamani Temple. Therefore the problemsis consists of two questions, those are: how the linguistic aspects of the inscription and aspects of social institutions enclosed to the inscription. The are two phasesresearch method. Data collection is done through libraryresearch and observation to documentation result. The collected dataare analyzed through morphological analysis and qualitative analysis.The research results showed that the Kintamani E inscription contains several aspects of language such as the using of affixation are Perfix: (di-, sa-, a- or ma-, pa-, ka-, pari-, Infix: -um- , -in-, suffixes: -nya-, -aken, - ?n, konfiks: (pa - an), (ma - an), (ka - an), (ma - ak?n), (pa - nya), (saka-nya).The social orders involved the political aspect, economic aspect, religious aspect and social aspects contained in the inscription very possibly reflectedthe society at that time

The practical implications of the unification of the real estate registration system in Korea

Purpose– This paper aims to show the practical conditions of the unification of real estate register system in Korea.Design/methodology/approach– Literature research.Findings– Although some information improvements and benefits in transaction can be expected through the elimination of discordances between dualized registry/registration books, the unification process should consider some legal and institutional factors which have been stabilized in the Korean society.Research limitations/implications– The socioeconomic effect of unification of real estate register system, such as cost-benefit consideration, is not included in this study. As for methodology, the conceptional framework is not based on an established theory, but on the simple thumb rule.Practical implications– The unification of registry and registration system of real estate in Korea could be implemented in a way of mild delegation of tasks, without a radical restructuring of the system. The practical guideline could be found in the system of family registry.Originality/value– The possibility of implementation of unification of the real estate register system is analyzed in aspects of social institutions and legal considerations.

Psychoanalysis and Social Thought: The Endogenous Origin of Society

A recent book by Frosh on the relation of psychoanalysis to social-political thought is reviewed, and the book's paradoxical conclusion is noted, namely, that those psychoanalytic schools explicitly intent on the primacy of the ego and of interpersonal object relations seem less relevant to the political dimension than those stressing the primacy of instinctual drives, which are yet presented as incompatible with cultural socialization. Following, an attempt is made to propose an approach to socialization that could overcome the logical anomalies inherent in current psychoanalytic thinking concerning socialization. It is suggested that society should not be treated as something merely outside the person that somehow has to be learned, nor as something genetically present in the form of a social instinct or an innate collective mentality. Rather, if human psychology is conceived as evolutionarily selected for constructing a societal world, the necessary connection between the human individual and society can be made without resorting to an outside imposition, at the same time as full recognition is given to the constitutive but largely unconscious aspects of social institutions.
