The Role of Driving Actors in the Social Capital Utilization in the Community

Population density and lower class marginalization due to the development of elite areas have alienated a community over its identity. The driving actors behind every social change exist, and they utilize a change through the villagers’ literacy power. Mainstreaming views on the actors’ active roles in social change essentially impact knowledge in the sociology of ethnic and cultural society. This study aims to describe the hidden actors behind the phenomenon of cultural movements that exist and develop national and international relations. This paper applies qualitative data collected in a participatory manner through interviews with key actors in Kampung Cempluk Festival. Focus group discussions were conducted with actors involved in every festival held by the community. Informants selected by snowball were then interviewed about their perceptions, motivations, and a value embodiment process. Researchers did the literature study through writings, releases, newspapers, mass media opinions, and several previous researches. The results indicate that alienation will foster citizens’ critical awareness of development and cultural values impacts. It is supported by driving actors who can read the potentials and opportunities in society. Thus, this research becomes the basis for policymakers in planning development which should prioritize a cultural approach and consider the threat of hidden power loss in society.

Examining the Utilization of Social Capital by Ghanaians When Seeking Care for Chronic Diseases: A Personal Network Survey.

Objectives: With limited social security and health protection in Ghana, intergenerational support is needed by those living with NCDs, who incur recurrent costs when seeking NCD care. We measured the level of informal support received by NCD patients and identified factors that influence support provision. Methods: We surveyed 339 NCD patients from three hospitals in Ghana, who listed their social ties and answered questions about their relationship and support frequency. We analyzed the relationship between social support, demographic and health information, characteristics of social ties, and network characteristics. Results: Participants described 1,371 social ties. Nearly 60% of respondents reported difficulties in their usual work or household duties due to chronic illness, which was also the strongest predictor of support. Patients with higher wellbeing reported less social support, while older age and having co-habitant supporters were negatively associated with support, indicating caregiver burnout. Conclusion: Ghanaian NCD patients receive support from various caregivers who may not be able to handle the increasing healthcare and social needs of an aging population. Policies should therefore enhance resource pooling and inclusiveness for old age security.

The resolution of the transition conflict from tourism to mining in Pangkal Niur Village through the strengthening of social capital

Utilization of social capital is considered capable of addressing conflicts that arise in rural areas, especially those related to tourist areas that are part of community empowerment programs. This study examines the crucial role of social capital in dealing with conflicts arising from the transition from the tourism sector to mining in Pangkal Niur Village. This study used qualitative methods. The analysis results depict in-depth how social capital significantly mitigates conflicts between the tourism and mining sectors. The implications of this social capital are also highlighted in the context of modernization and globalization, especially concerning the local community in Pangkal Niur Village. Additionally, this research emphasizes the importance of social relationships in forming the basis of trust, cooperation, and community participation. In the context of post-mining land restoration efforts, sustainable actions are crucial to reduce environmental damage caused by such functional changes, especially in regions with significant mining sectors like Bangka Belitung. The findings of this research have broad implications, especially in environmental management and sustainable development. The study concludes that social capital can play a role in resolving conflicts, but continuous efforts are still needed to preserve the environment and enhance community well-being.

Utilization of Social Capital in Managing Family Planning Village Programs in Rural Communities in Indonesia

This article aims to analyze the existing social capital in the community and elaborate on it through community empowerment to manage the family planning village. Communities in rural areas have a variety of potential social capital that can be utilized in implementing the KB village program. Utilization of social capital such as bonding, bridging and linking becomes effective through values, norms, culture, social organizations that exist in society local. The approach used in this study is a mixed-method. The mixed research method used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches. This research was conducted in 3 sub-districts in 3 villages in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, where the purposively selected villages are villages that run the Family Planning Village Program. The ethnicity of the people in these three villages has different characteristics. The people of Marunjuk Tongah Village are dominated by the Batak Karo ethnic group and the Protestant Christian religion. Islam and Javanese ethnicity dominate Tanjung Rejo Village and Kramat Gajah Village. Sociologically, the social ties of the people in this village come from ethnic and religious similarities, similar places, and blood similarities. Social bridging aspects can be seen in the culture of mutual assistance and community involvement in village activities. Social linking can be seen in establishing cooperative relationships and continuity between the community and formal and non-formal government institutions. The potential for social capital developed by the Family Planning Village administrators is the harmonization of village communities. Rural communities can improve the Family Planning Village program and village development implementation. The use of social capital has been well implemented in managing the Family Planning Village program through community empowerment activities. Understanding the potential of community social capital is an important first step in carrying out community empowerment and physical or social development in society.

Do Information Networks Enhance Adoption of Sustainable Agricultural Practices? Evidence from Northern Dry Zone of Karnataka, India

The study aimed to analyze the perception of farmers towards sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) and identify social networks using primary data collected randomly from 300 farmers of the northern dry zone of Karnataka. Five-point Likert scale was used to analyze the perception of farmers towards SAPs and open-source software named “Gephi” was used to map farmers’ social networks. Farmers’ perceptions towards SAPs were poor and only one in eight respondents reported high perception towards SAPs. Comparatively, large farmers had better perception towards SAPs and had better access to capacity building (extension contact and farm events) than the small and marginal farmers. Social capital (neighbor, progressive and relative farmers) had also played an important role in spreading SAPs related information among the farmers. However, local input dealers failed to be key informants and hardly disseminated information regarding SAPs. Government extension officials were the dominant informants on SAPs. Given the low level of adoption of SAPs in the study area, exploiting the potential of ICTs, training local input dealers, capacity building of the farmers and effective utilization of social capital are the suggested policy options to enhance the adoption of SAPs.

Strategi Pemanfaatan Modal Non Ekonomi Dalam Pemenangan Kandidat Pada Pilkada Tahun 2020 Di Kabupaten Pohuwato

This research was motivated by the political phenomenon of the 2020 Regional Elections in Pohuwato Regency, which was conquered by figures with inadequate economic and financial capital. The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the strategy of maximizing the use of non-economic capital as part of the political strategy carried out to win in the regional election arena. The data collection method was conducted through documentation studies and in-depth interviews. Data analysis techniques consist of three steps: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing / verification. The results showed that the strategy of maximizing the capital was carried out by the winning figure with the strategy of understanding the habitude found among the Pohuwato people. So, from the results of the reading, it was concluded that the Pohuwato society is a plural society that upholds the prevailing customary values. The efforts are to build emotional closeness with traditional stakeholders and always keep every action from violating applicable customary values. The second strategy is the utilization of social capital by building trust, friendship, and loyalty, as well as owned social networks. The principle of leadership for all suggests that the figure of BC will stand above the interests of all factions. This strategy was developed in response to the condition of the plural Pohuwato society. The third strategy, the use of symbolic capital, was carried out by SM with his position as a representative of the local parliament, the support of his siblings as a Regents, the big family name Mbuinga, which is quite large and famous. Besides, the spouse of the deputy regent candidate is a female figure, former chairman of the Pohuwato Regency Parliament, a member of the Gorontalo Provincial Parliament, and she has a big family name in Pohuwato Regency.

Implementation of social capital for multipurpose cooperative autonomy

Only a few cooperatives succeed in utilizing social capital, one of them is the Setia Budi Wanita (SBW) Multipurpose Cooperative, East Java. This study aims to elaborate on social capital utilization that develops the autonomy of a multipurpose cooperative. The research method used was qualitative with a phenomenology approach in SBW Multipurpose Cooperative and data were collected through interviews, focused group discussions, and document review. This study has nine informants, including one East Java cooperative figure, four cooperative administrators, two existing members, and two new members. Various data were traced, among others: profiles of SBW figures, various women empowerment programs, the joint responsibility group system, and collaborative partnership between SBW Multipurpose Cooperative and the Department of Cooperatives and SMEs of East Java Province. The results show that SBW Multipurpose Cooperative has various social capital, among others: the characters of Mursia Zaafril Ilyas and Sri Untari Bisowarno, the bond of the seventeen doctors’ wives, a community of 360 members, and fourteen administrators of SBW; values and trust in the network of women’s cooperatives. This study concludes that social capital elements enable SBW Multipurpose Cooperative to be an autonomous cooperative. SBW Multipurpose Cooperative can utilize the collaboration of individual, community, and network social capital.

Pemanfaatan Modal Sosial Dalam Pengembangan Sektor Perdagangan Pada Usaha Mikro Kecil dan Menengah (Studi di Tapanuli Utara)

<p>Writing a journal entitled "Utilization of Social Capital in the Development of the Trade Sector in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Study in North Tapanuli)" begins with a new economic paradigm that sees multidimensional development reflected in various social perspectives. The trade sector is a solution for the implementation of development, especially from the joints of the national economy. The presence of micro, small and medium enterprises in the trade sector can maintain economic stability, especially in strengthening the structure of the national economy. The method used in this research is descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data were collected by observation and interviews. The unit of analysis and informants in this study were traders and customers of micro, small and medium enterprises in North Tapanuli. The data were interpreted using field notes. The results show that the use of social capital in micro, small and medium enterprises makes them strong, independent and has high competitiveness, where all business actors play a major role in economic activities, from process, production, distribution to consumption.</p>

Social Capital: Higher Resilience in Slums in the Lagos Metropolis

Different slums exhibit different levels of resilience against the threat of eviction. However, little is known about the role of the social capital of the slum community in this context. This study investigates the factors contributing to slum resilience in the Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria, through a social capital lens. This study first investigates land allocation in slums, then the available social capital, and subsequently how this capital influences resilience to the threat of eviction in slums. Data were collected in two slum communities, in Lagos, through in-depth interviews and focus groups discussion. This study shows that land allocation is done by the traditional heads, contrarily to the mandate of the Nigeria Land Use Act of 1978. Furthermore, there is a form of structural social capital through the presence of government registered community development associations in the slums; however, their activities, decision-making process and the perception of the residents’ towards their respective associations, differs. This led to differences in trust, social cohesion and bonding ties among residents of the slum, thereby influencing resilience to the threat of eviction in slums. Since community group associations, through the appointed executives, drive the efficient utilization of social capital in slums, this study therefore recommends their restructuring in order to support a sustainable solution to the threat of eviction in slums in Lagos.

한국과 일본의 빈집 현황과 발생 요인에 관한 실증적 비교분석

Vacant houses, a typical phenomenon during the decline of a region, can give rise to social problems, including deteriorated surrounding landscapes and crimes such as arson, as well as inefficient utilization of social capital. This study empirically compared and analyzed local characteristics affecting the occurrence of vacant houses through a multi-regression analysis using statistical data from South Korea and Japan. By applying national, metropolitan, urban, and rural models using variables for both countries, the results revealed significant differences in the factors affecting the occurrence of vacant houses between South Korea and Japan. In particular, Japan avoided suburbanization and implemented an urban shrinkage policy of demolishing deteriorated houses in the existing urban areas and constructing new houses, thereby reducing the ratio of vacant houses. Conversely, South Korea focused on the development of underdeveloped suburban areas by supplying new houses, resulting in an increase in vacant houses. Furthermore, because South Korea has a significant gap between urban and rural areas, its rural areas are similar to those of Japan; hence, these areas experience serious vacant house problems. Therefore, South Korea should establish policies that consider local characteristics, including preferential regeneration of existing and deprived urban areas, rather than the new development of underdeveloped suburban areas.

International experience of converting social capital of local communities into development of tourism sector

The subject of this research is the international practices of utilization of social capital of local communities for the purpose of development of tourism attractiveness of the territories. The object of this research is the social capital of local communities. The author explores such aspects of the topic as the development of tourism on the basis of local community, stimulation of social activism and communication between the locals, their ability to self-organization on the local level within the framework of international projects. Special attention is given to the risks and negative consequences for the local communities caused by tourism. The conclusions is made that the role of the representatives of local communities is considered as one of the key elements within the international practice of tourism development. This relates to the formation of tolerant and friendly tourism space for maintaining a “geographical myth”, which cannot be created without involvement of the local residents. Such process must be manageable for the authorities that ensure protection of local population from the sociocultural threats caused by tourists. International experience can be adapted in the Russian realities to some extent, however this process requires outworking of the corresponding mechanism of three-way interaction of the local government, business and local residents. The scientific novelty lies int the attempts of critical revaluation of the role of social capital of local communities at the time of transformation of tourism industry due to unfavorable epidemic situation.

Good Practices for Strengthening the Social Capital of Village Communities by House Renovation Activities

The study examines how to strengthen the social capital among the village communities with the study case in Genuksari, South Semarang. It aims to reconstruct the community service activities by the Community Service Team of Faculty of Letters, Diponegoro University, which took place in 1989, 30 years ago. The method used was a historical-contemplative method, based on the community service report document. It was the research work in the form of writing related to the topic, supplemented by in-depth interviews with the interviewees. The results of good practices are in the form of a theoretical framework for the social capital utilization from the slum village community to become a community that is empowered and dignified on its own ability, able to change from a village that is originally hopelessly marked by drinking, gambling into a community which is able to build a residence through a social gathering system and mutual work and has successfully rehabilitated 22 housing units.

The role of culture-moderated social capital in technology transfer – insights from Asia and America

This study examines the impact of cultural differences on the creation of social capital in technology transfer processes. The aim is to understand the influence of culture on relationships, particularly the structural, relational and cognitive dimensions of social capital created in relationships associated with university-industry links, specifically technology transfer (TT). The research builds on a culture-moderated social capital perspective; observing that the characteristics and usefulness of social capital are determined by cultural practices prevailing in social structures. The influence of culture on social capital in case studies of six American and ten Asian technology transfer offices and organizations involved in technology transfer has been investigated. Using university research technology transfer and commercialization as the centerpiece of the empirical work, we examine basic Hofstede's cultural characteristics and the way they influence TT practices in two different culture types. Our findings suggest cultures can influence creation and utilization of social capital in university-industry links. Culture can influence not only relationships with external stakeholders in technology transfer (industry, governmental bodies) but also internal relationships and management styles in TT offices (influences on organizational culture). We propose that the awareness of cultural characteristics and influences is important not only in cross-cultural technology transfer but also domestic operations. Using this awareness to build trust lies at the heart of interactions with internal and external stakeholders. The research results should be useful for entrepreneurs, universities and technology transfer officers in order to better understand the nature, and role, of culture-moderated social capital in technology transfer and to support effective processes for scientific research commercialization.

Incidences of Green Tobacco Sickness (GTS) on tobacco farmer and prevention efforts through social capital utilization in Indonesia

The purpose of this study was to find the incidences and associated factors of GTS among tobacco farmer and prevention efforts through Social capital Utilization in Indonesia. This research is a quantitative is analytical using cross sectional design, and qualitative research with FGD which is implemented for 8 months on April-November 2017, with tobacco farmer respondents from 12 districts in Jember Regency which is the center of tobacco production. 322 samples of the research was collected by stratified random sampling. The results showed that knowledge is significantly related to GTS Symptoms (sig 0.03), Attitudes (sig 0,094) and The action of GTS Prevention (sig 0.06), the use of PPE is significantly related to GTS (0.03). The result of FGD showed the harvest time in Na-ogst and Kasturi tobacco plantation was done in the different time. When the harvest time was before the sun raised which caused the tobacco leaves still in wet condition and easily to contact with the skin of the tobacco farmer which did not use the Personal Protection Equipment. The community leader of tobacco farmer in the prevention of GTS, which is facilitated from Plantation the Institution and from the tobacco industry as the media to campaign the prevention of GTS.

도시재생에 있어서 사회자본의 역할과 활용에 관한 비판적 논의

본 논문은 도시재생 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 갈등 및 젠트리피케이션 현상의 원인을 기존 커뮤니티의 사회자본 파괴 및 활용의 부재로 보는 것에서 시작한다. 먼저 도시재생의 개념적 성격을 네 가지로 정리한 후, 사회자본의 개념과 성격을 재확인하며, 도시재생과 사회자본과의 관계를 논하였다. 또한 커뮤니티 중심의 사회적인 방향으로 이동한 현재 도시재생의 패러다임 내에서, 도시재생에서의 사회자본에 관한 기존 연구를 바탕으로 사회자본 활용 연구의 현황 및 한계점을 도출한다. 이를 통해 종합적이고 지속적인 도시재생을 위해 필수적인 개념인 사회자본 활용의 중요성과 관련 후속 연구의 필요성을 밝히고자 한다.

Employment Pathways: How Former Offenders Navigate to Employment

Employment is one of the most critical dimensions of reintegration, and much research documents the barriers formerly incarcerated persons experience in seeking out steady work. However, most offenders are ultimately successful in obtaining some form of employment. Less research discusses how offenders man age these barriers or examines the practice by which offenders navigate employment pathways, and even less examines whether particular offense categories further challenge the process. The current research utilizes qualitative data to examine the methods by which ex-offenders seek out and obtain employment, with an emphasis on the function of self-motivating practices, access to services, and the utilization of social capital. The analysis further differentiates between sex offenders and non-sex offenders in these experiences. Our findings suggest ex-offenders rely on many types of resources in seeking out employment, and that these differ by offense type, but underlying motivation and persistence are key components in their search. Understanding these methods is important, as a comprehensive understanding of successful navigation to employment can inform policy in relation to improved guidance on advising employment searches.

Strategi Penghidupan Peternak Sapi Perah Di Lereng Selatan Gunungapi Merapi Pasca Erupsi 2010

This study aims to analyzed the strategies of dairy farmers in disaster prone areas (DPA) in the southern slopes of Merapi for sustaining livelihood after the eruption of Merapi volcano in 2010. Research conducted by the Survey method. Sampling was done by using the Census methods, consists of 84 dairy farmers in DPA III (Kaliadem hamlet) and 50 dairy farmers in DPA II (Gondang Wetan hamlet). Both hamlets were including Cangkringan district To find out the farmers strategies used descriptive method, that was to gather as much information related to their livelihood, covers three important aspects: assets (livelihood resources), access and activity. Statistical analysis that used for classification of livelihood strategies was Factor Analysis with SPSS 18. The results showed, there were nine strategy chosen by the dairy farmers for sustaining livelihoods in order to ensure sustainable livelihoods: The combination of financial, physical asset and natural resources utilization, as well as maintained dairy farm; The combination of physical and social capital utilization, social access and business diversification; Utilization of social access; Utilization of social help and mutual access, Utilization of liquid assets and social capital; The combination of psychological factors with utilization of financial & social access; Utilization of financial assets and access with the use of pause time; Utilization of social capital; and Farm diversification. The combination of financial, physical asset and natural resources utilization, as well as maintained dairy farm was the most of dominant strategy chosen by the farmers, with the greatest cumulative value (27.645%). Psychological variable (sense of security) was to be the new finding in the theory of sustainable livelihood strategies. Social capital was the variable that dominated the basic options of sustainable livelihood strategy of dairy farmers after the eruption of Merapi in 2010.

Dynamics of Social Capital: Effects of Performance Feedback on Network Change

We present a theory of social capital dynamics. In particular, we examine how individuals in organizations respond to events such as performance evaluations by changing whom they interact with and the extent to which they utilize their contacts. We argue that positive performance feedback from supervisors increases levels of self-efficacy and results in the creation of new social capital as well as the increased utilization of existing social capital (i.e., forming new ties with sources of information and aid, and increasing interactions with existing contacts). In addition, negative feedback decreases self-efficacy, resulting in reallocation of social capital utilization to concentrate on a small number of existing frequently-accessed contacts (i.e., decreasing interactions with some contacts while increasing interactions with others). Our arguments highlight the role of individual agency in social capital dynamics and clarify the role that individual performance evaluations can play in the evolving structure of social networks. To test our hypotheses, we use a longitudinal social network data-set collected over a six-year period in the IT department of a global engineering firm. Using fixed-effects panel regression models, we find support for our hypotheses, suggesting that performance feedback is a determinant factor in social capital dynamics.

Social Capital and Sustainable Health Care: An Analysis of Community Based Palliative Care Model of Kerala

Social Capital is the most crucial asset which significantly influence the efficacy and resilience of any community. Social capital is a dependent variable that depends upon the competence and coherence of the individuals in the community and mode of social relationships, trust and networks they maintain. It is one of the most sustainable social resources that originate from human relations and results on the mutual support of people. Utilization of Social capital has a wide applicability in the process of social inclusion, especially in dealing with the vulnerable and disadvantaged sections in the community itself. Voluntary organizations are very keen to utilize the social capital for community/social services and community development in a sustainable manner. Community based de-institutionalized Palliative Care is one of the foremost among such organizations that made social capital in a strategic way for social inclusion and community well being. This paper analyses the extent to which different elements of social capital helps in initiating the sustainable community based palliative care movement by assessing the unique intervention strategies carried out by the palliative care. This paper explores conceptual questions of how social capital and voluntary community based services are correlated. A case study method was adopted for the study in which ten palliative care units were analyzed. The results show that a number of social capital elements are playing a vital role in the sustainability of community palliative care movement in Kerala.
