An Analytical Theoretical Study of Terrorism According to the Social Action Theory of ‘Talcott Parsons’ as an Instance of Sociological Theories

The main focus of sociology is presenting the social life of people and their behaviours, whether in groups or societies. Sociology, usually, is defined as a field of research which studies the social interaction between people and their behaviours. Thus the sociological theories and scholars have given great importance to social action concept. In this study, which is an extract from a PhD dissertation, the terrorism has analysed sociologically according to the Talcott Parsons’ theory of social action. Since terrorism is one of the common social phenomena around the world, it has various factors and reasons that vary according to the communities’ nature of life. Terrorism, also, is a concept which used for any violent acts committed by an organization, an individual or a group. It has been experienced by humanity in many different ways throughout different eras. Therefore this study has tried to determine a theoretical framework for analysing and reviewing this phenomenon besides talking about it according to the reality of society and its most important causes and effects on the life of society and individuals. Because the Parsons’ theory serves the study aims and gives us the opportunity of conducting and analysing the study in a more detailed approach, it has been utilised for the current study. The main aim of the study is to analyse the phenomenon of terrorism from the perspective of “Talcott Parsons' theory of social action as a sociological theory”.

Building the Character of a Community Concerned with Ecology through the Environmental Reforestation Program in Madiun City

Environmental damage in urban areas is getting worse due to physical development, pollution from motorized vehicles, motorbikes and cars, and pollution and the lack of Green Open Space (RTH). Research gap in the context of this study, air pollution causes unhealthy urban environments, exhaust emissions from cars, motorbikes, dirty air, reduced oxygen (O2), causing hot air to minimal greenery. This study uses a qualitative research approach with descriptions in the form of narratives, stories, words to the subjects studied. Data collection methods through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, data sources are obtained from primary data, namely the community, while secondary sources are environmental NGOs, students, community leaders. Data analysis is carried out through the Interactive Miles and Huberman model which includes the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions from data. To explore the data, researchers used the Social Construction Action theory study by L. Berger, T. Luckman, namely a theory that focuses on human social actions in social interaction. The results of the study indicate that a community construction process is needed in order to obtain social change in society, create environmental awareness, with large trees that produce O2.

TINDAKAN SOSIAL PENGGUNAAN SIMBOL AGAMA DALAM POSTER KAMPANYE LEGISLATIF TAHUN 2019 DI PROVINSI BANTEN

This study discusses the phenomenon of the use of religious attributes in campaign posters that occurred during the general elections (elections) in 2019, especially in the selection of legislative candidates in Banten Province who were the subject of research, which we know that religious attributes are often used by Muslim communities in Banten in conducting worship or religious activities, but the political elite using religious attributes as a political message in this campaign poster makes a shift in meaning and the motives used. To examine the identification of the problem the researcher used Max Weber's Social Action Theory and Husserl's phenomenological method, interpretative paradigms and qualitative approaches to look for explanations about events and interpret phenomena that occur, in collecting data researchers conducted observations, in-depth interviews, documentation and literature presentations. The results of this study indicate that the motives carried out by legislative candidates in using religious attributes in the campaign poster are because of the disclosure of identity, habits, image formation and culture. For symbolic meaning in daily life and politics used to worship and religious activities, respect religious people and attend formal activities. The heroism as a philosophical and sociological concept in spatio-temporal dimension

The article presents the results of an interdisciplinary study of heroism, in which philosophers and sociologists took part. The study consists of two stages — a theoretical understanding of heroism and an empirical pilot study of heroism in the assessment of Russians. This article is devoted to the coverage of the first, theoretical stage of the study. It presents a semiotic analysis of heroism from the point of view of the concept of the chronotope in Western European and Asian cultures, and deduces the constants of the national semantics of the hero, heroism and the heroic. The dynamics of changing the meanings of the heroic, deed and feat is traced. The sociological part, continuing the philosophical understanding of heroism within the framework of the chronotope concept, considers the phenomenon of heroism through a social relationship, following N.K. Mikhailovsky vector. To comprehend the relationship between the hero and the crowd, such sociological approaches as creative and relational theories of social action are used, the provisions of P. Donati’s relational sociology are used.

The Development of digital tourism at the Tebing Tegallinggah temple tourist attraction in Bedulu Village, Gianyar Regency, Bali

Candi Tebing Tegallinggah is a tourist attraction located in Bedulu Village, Blahbatuh District, Gianyar Regency. Since it opened as a tourist attraction at the end of 2019, the level of tourist visits to Candi Tebing Tegallinggah is still relatively low, this is because access to information regarding the existence of Tebing Tegallinggah especially through online media is still very minimal. Story posts and reviews on social media regarding the existence of the Candi Tebing Tegallinggah are still very minimal, until March 2023 there were only 11 story posts and 26 reviews. Therefore, this research is very important to carry out to create a digital tourism website application in the development of the Candi Tebing Tegallinggah. Data collection in this research was carried out using in-depth interviews, observation, and document study methods. The data was analyzed descriptively and qualitatively using the digital tourism concept approach, the concept of potential tourist attractions, the concept of destination development, and the social action theory approach. The results of this research show that the potential tourist attraction of Tebing Tegallinggah is in the form of natural potential, cultural potential, and artificial potential. The digital tourism application for the Candi Tebing Tegallinggah tourist attraction takes the form of a website (https://canditebingtegallingah.id) which contains information regarding the location, history, and general description of the Candi Tebing Tegallinggah which contains virtual tour content. The development of Candi Tebing Tegallinggah as a tourist attraction has had a positive impact on the economy, socio-culture, and the surrounding environment. The application of digital tourism applications in developing the Candi Tebing Tegallinggah is expected to increase the number of tourist visits.

The relationship between feminist collective action and social media engagement

Purpose This study aims to investigate the impact of online collective feminist actions on social media participation and the perceived value of social media as part of the social identity model of collective action (SIMCA). Design/methodology/approach A mixed methodology is used. Within the SIMCA model in the context of feminist collective actions, social identity, group-efficacy and fear predicted the intention of online collective action participation in the first part (quantitative) of the study. Contrary to predictions, the influence of anger on the intention to participate in collective action was negative. In-depth interviews are conducted in the study’s second (qualitative) part to investigate why individuals do not participate in collective actions despite their anger at violence against women. Findings The concept of online feminist collective action, from the perspective of the SIMCA model, deals with violence against women in the context of social marketing, revealing the importance of online collective actions as an antecedent of social media participation and the perceived value of social media. The possible causes of the negative impact of anger, which is an important emotion within the framework of the SIMCA model, on online feminist collective action were determined, and a contribution was made to the social marketing literature in the context of women’s rights. Originality/value The study makes three major contributions to the literature. First, women’s rights are addressed in the context of online collective action, an issue that has received little attention in social marketing. Second, in the context of the social identity theory of collective action, online collective feminist action and its predecessors are addressed. Finally, the Turkish case is used to highlight the probable causes of anger’s negative impact on collective action.

Actualization of Meaning and Motives For Entering The Sufism Order On Max Weber Perpective

This paper interprets the actualization of the core beliefs and values meaning of the Tijaniyya Sufi Order by Kiai Djauhari, Kiai Tidjani and Kiai Ahmad Fauzi, the muqaddam of the Tijaniyya Order as well as the leaders and caregivers of a pesantren. This is a phenomenological study, conducted at the Al-Amien Prenduan Islamic boarding school. Observations, interviews and documentation were conducted to collect data. Max Weber's theory of social action were employed to analyze the data. This study concludes that the actualization was performed through being the role models as well as internalizing the practice of the Tijaniyya in the pesantren traditions. This actualization process stimulates the emergence of five motives of talqin Tijani (entering the Tijaniyya Order). They are traditional motives, affectual motives, instrumentally rational motives, value rational motives, and intuitive motives.

The Perception of Parents on Early Marriage Cases in Lapandewa Kaindea Village

The aim of this research is to understand how parents perceive early marriage cases in Lapandewa Kaindea Village and to determine the impact of these perceptions. The study uses social action theory and employs a qualitative research method with a descriptive qualitative data analysis approach, collecting data through observation and interviews. The informants consist of four people: parents whose children married at an early age, parents whose children did not marry at an early age, and a religious figure. The results show the perceptions of parents whose children did not marry early, the perceptions of parents about the causes of early marriage, and the perceptions of the religious figure. The factors contributing to early marriage in Lapandewa Kaindea Village include pregnancy outside of marriage, education, economic conditions, and communication factors. Social Action of the Main Character in Oliver Bowden's Assassin's Creed: Renaissance Novel

This research explores the various forms of social action exhibited by the protagonist, Ezio Auditore, in Oliver Bowden's novel Assassin's Creed: Renaissance. Drawing from Max Weber's theory of social action, the research categorizes these actions into four types: instrumental rationality action, value-oriented action, affective action, and traditional action. The data for the study consists of sentences, paragraphs, and dialogues describing Ezio Auditore's social actions in the novel, analyzed using a descriptive method with a sociology of literature approach. The data analysis reveals the frequency of each action type, with affective action being the most prevalent by ten data, followed by value rational action with eight data, rational instrumental action with five data, and traditional action with two data. Additionally, the study identifies four main goals pursued by the character: seeking revenge, uncovering conspiracies, eradicating the Templar order, and protecting Florence. The predominant use of rational instrumental action and the lower occurrence of value rational action in pursuing these goals are highlighted. These findings offer insights into Ezio Auditore's motivations and behaviors, shedding light on the social dynamics depicted in the novel.

Pasar Rebo Street Library Community Alternative Education Empowerment Model for School Out-of-School Children

The problem of dropping out of school experienced by students in Kampung Tengah, East Jakarta raised the social concern of the Pasar Rebo Street Library Community to Apply the concept of empowerment throught alternatie education activities as an effort to overcome the phenomenon of students dropping out of school. This research aims to describe the internal and external factors causing dropouts, the alternative education empowerment model and the supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling technique to determine informants. Data were collected throught interviews, observation and documentation. The data were analyzed using structural functionalism theory, specifically Talcott Parsons’ AGIL concept and Max Weber’s Social Action theory. The results show that the internal factor that causes children to drop out of school is the desire of children to help parents work, while the external factor is the lack of parental attention to children’s education. There are five alternative education empowerment models carried out by the Pasar Rebo Street Library Community, namely the history model of the formation of teaching staff, the book collection model for teaching materials, the student data colletction model, the student classification model and the altenative education learning model. Supporting factors in alternative education activites are motivation, commitment and a supportive environment, while the inhibiting factors are the time of organizing activities, the inconsistency of some teaching staff, and the lack of interest in learning from some students. Based on the results of the research, alternative education activities carried out by the Pasar Rebo Street Library Community for school dropouts in Kampung Tengah, East Jakarta are included in the concept of empowerment, where students are given learning, knowledge and knowledge like in formal education, and there are plans to create PKBM so that students get proof of learning or diplomas.

Anomali dalam Pemilihan Kepala Desa (Studi Kasus di Desa Kamal Kecamatan Pemulutan Barat Kabupaten Ogan Ilir)

This reserach aims to find out the anomalous phenomenon in the election of village heads in Kamal village, West Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir Regency. The problem focuses on anomalies in the election of village heads in Kamal village, West Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir Regency. In order to approach this problem, social action theory by Max Weber is used as a reference because this theory is able to analyze actions such as what are the driving factors for anomalies in village head elections. Data was collected through documentation and interviews and analyzed qualitatively. This study concludes that the anomaly in the election of village heads in Kamal village, West Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir Regency, is due to several social actions. The first is instrumental rational action, in the form of strategies used by each candidate for village head, such as conducting outreach to the community and putting up banners. Second, value-oriented rational actions, such as creating a vision and mission. Third, traditional actions in the form of identity politics. Community Participation in Village Tourism Development

Community participation in tourism development is the participation and equality of community members in a particular activity. Raharjana (2012) believes that the community plays an important role in supporting tourism development, especially in controlling the direction of tourism development so that it can minimize the negative impact of tourism activities. One of the well-known tourist villages in West Lombok Regency is Senggigi Village. This location became a research location with the title "Community Participation in Tourism Village Development (Senggigi Village Study, Batu Layar District, West Lombok Regency). This research examines community participation in the development of tourist villages using a qualitative approach. Apart from that, in this research data collection used interview, observation and documentation methods. The collected data will be analyzed descriptively qualitatively. Meanwhile, the theories used are Max Weber's theory of participation and social action. It was found that the participation of community members, especially those around the beach, was very good. The impact of community participation on development greatly helps the local economy.

Recognize Max Weber's Social Action Theory in Individual Social Transformation

Every individual in his social reality always performs social actions, whether in a state of realization or not, these actions continue to run dynamically along with the dynamics of self-situation with the reality of his life. This paper uses narrative literature review to recognize Max Weber's Social Action Theory. It is found that Weber's social action theory originated from the formation of a cultural tradition of thought by his father and mother as well as the formal formation of his learning process and was certainly influenced by the German historian, philosopher, economist and political theorist Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) as well as influenced by Nietzsche (1844-1900). It is found that social action always has motives (Intention) and meaning (Meaning) directed to others and to oneself. Transformational social action can be rational which he calls instrumental rationality and value rationality. As well as being Non-Rational. He called it Affection-oriented social action and Traditional Orientation.

Tindakan Sosial Pada Lirik Lagu Album Hurje ! Maka Merapallah Zarathustra Karya Pangalo Kajian Sosiologi Sastra

This research aims to determine the form of social action in the song lyrics on the album Hurje! Maka Merapallah Zarathustra by Pangalo!, using qualitative descriptive methods and content analysis. The analysis was carried out based on a literary sociology approach with the help of social action theory to find out how social action takes shape in the lyrics of the album Hurje! Maka Merapallah Zarathustra. The theory of social action used in this research is based on Max Weber's opinion about forms of social action consisting of instrumental rational action, value-oriented rational action, traditional action, and affective action. The results of this research show that in the song lyrics on the album Hurje! Maka Merapallah Zarathustra by Pangalo!, there are various forms of social action which include instrumental rational action, value-oriented rational action, traditional action, and affective action. It was concluded that there were 81 social actions. These various social actions were found based on the analysis of 62 instrumental rational actions, 8 value-oriented rational actions, 5 traditional actions, and 6 affective actions..

Faith Healing Techniques in the Management of Sickle Cell Anaemia in Nigeria

AbstractPeople living with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) tend to experience multiple sources of therapy complemented by self-care practices. In Nigeria, over 100,000 babies are born yearly with sickle cell anaemia. High prevalence of this disease in Nigeria is attributed to lack of adequate knowledge about it. Data exist on the role of Western medicine and traditional medicine in the management of several diseases including sickle cell anaemia but little is known about faith therapy. This study therefore examined faith healing techniques in the management of SCA outside the medical settings. Using Weber’s Social Action Theory and Health Belief Model as explanatory framework, qualitative data were obtained through snowball sampling technique which cut across seven local government areas (LGAs) of Osun State—Atakumosa West, Boripe, Osogbo, Ife East, Ifedayo, Ilesa West, and Ila. A total of twenty Key Informant Interview sessions were held while three case studies were generated from the respondents. The study revealed that treatment techniques include prayer, application of herbs, divination, and counselling. Poor adherence to treatment was noted to be due to emotional trauma being experienced by patients and caregivers. Prayer and counselling were effective therapy to manage the condition. Both Christian and Muslim clerics engaged used prayer and fasting as treatment techniques, even though they also recognized the need for modern medical services. Traditional healers diagnosed the disease with divination and applied herbs and charms as well as appease the perceived spirit causing the disease. The Muslim clerics also use herbs. Majority of the practitioners recognized that the problem of emotional trauma (the major threat to adherence to treatment and positive health outcomes) is best surmounted through prayer and fasting. In terms of treatment, the general trends thus entail combination of faith healing through prayer and fasting, spiritual consultation, and the practice of embracing modern medicine where SCA patients are referred to hospitals. This paper therefore concluded that culture and society provide the context for understanding the prevention and treatment of diseases.

The analysis of the concept of a reasonable timeframe for court proceedings is a pressing issue in the current stage of the development of criminal procedure in Russia. Several international mechanisms for protecting individual rights in the sphere of criminal proceedings, including those for contesting reasonable timeframes, have been lost. The study employed general and specific scientific methods, such as dialectical, axiological, and synergetic approaches, as well as the theory of social action and modeling. Moreover, the application of methods of analysis and synthesis of information, comparative legal analysis, and formal legal approaches allowed the author to reach reliable conclusions. The research established that failure to adhere to reasonable timeframes for judicial decision-making violates the rights of individuals involved in criminal proceedings. Ensuring the protection of individuals’ rights and legitimate interests is only possible when reasonable time limits in criminal procedure are observed. Based on the provisions related to compensation for violations of the principle of reasonable timeframes during court proceedings, a conclusion was drawn regarding the essence of these provisions, which allows for an evaluation of the criteria of reasonableness outlined by the legislator and the identification of methods for their assessment.

Content and structure of social practices

The article is devoted to the problem of defining social practices and their content, in which a comprehensive approach to the study of social practices is justified. To this end, it is necessary to adhere to the following methodological guidelines: first, the postmodern vision of reality, which emphasizes pluralism as a worldview and methodological guideline for understanding social processes; secondly, the study of social practices in the aspect of everyday life, based on the methodological guidelines of background knowledge and the concept of the "revealing" nature of practices; thirdly, theories of social action that exist in modern sociology, since the core of any social practice is social activity. The article notes the fact that today in science, three levels of social practices are distinguished depending on the role of the subject, namely, social practices of subjects in everyday activities, social practices of groups and communities, social practices of institutions and organizations. The nature of social practices is explained by two approaches - the background character of the practice and the "revealing" nature of the practices. Background practice is the context against which utterances and behavior are interpreted. The "revealing" nature of practices is related to the problem of identities. Practices constitute and reproduce identities or reveal basic modes of social existence at a specific historical moment. Meaningfully, social practices have spatial and temporal localization and may differ depending on the historical period, cultural features of the country or region, and the state system. The article provides a description of social time and social space, analyzes the space-time continuum - the chronotope. The third element of social practices is social action, which acts as the nucleus around which all social life revolves. Social practices are implemented in routine acts of practical actions of individuals in everyday life, existence and functioning of social groups and communities, functioning of social institutions.

Effect of Social Innovation and Social Value on Poverty Alleviation in Zamfara State

This study examined the effect of social innovation and social value on poverty alleviation in Zamfara state. The major objective of the study is to assess the relationship between social innovation and social value on poverty alleviation in Zamfara state. A survey method of study was adopted. Data was collected through a closed ended questionnaires which was design in a five linker scale. The data was analyzed using SMART –PLS3 model and the hypotheses were tested using bootstrapping model to run the analysis. The researchers anchored the study on Schumpeterian Theory of Innovation and Social Action Theory. The study revealed that there is a strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship between social innovation and poverty alleviation in Zamfara state. And it equally revealed that there is a negative and statistically significant relationship between social value and poverty alleviation in Zamfara state. Therefore the researchers recommended that organizations and policymakers should focus on creating enabling environment for social innovation to strive for better poverty alleviation in Zamfara state.

Doxing on Social Networking Sites: An Extension of the Social Cognitive Theory of Moral Thought and Action

Doxing on social networking sites (SNS doxing) has attracted scholarly and public attention due to the devastating consequences that this behavior can have on individuals and society. SNS doxing occurs when netizens disclose wrongdoers’ personal information on SNSs to punish them and hold them accountable for their unethical and improper acts. To offer a compelling theoretical explanation for this behavior beyond descriptive analyses of SNS doxing, we extend the social cognitive theory of moral thought and action by using retributive proportionality and social approval to articulate doxers’ moral judgments and decision-making. We conducted two independent studies using scenario-based and field surveys to validate the research model. The results of polynomial regression analysis suggest that users’ moral approval of SNS doxing is the result of the combined analyses between perceived blameworthiness of the doxee, perceived severity of SNS doxing, and perceived social approval of SNS doxing. We also found that users’ moral approval of SNS doxing determines their engagement in SNS doxing. Through this study, we offer rich theoretical and practical insights into the prevention of SNS doxing.

Social interactions in mandatory teleworking: From instrumental rationality to the theory of communicative action in the workplace context

Interpersonal relationships at work usually occur face-to-face. During the Covid-19 pandemic, these interactions shifted to a virtual way. This essay intends to analyze telecommuting from an individual perspective, bringing Max Weber’s theory of social action and Jürgen Habermas theory of communicative action to the discussion. Instrumental rationality has prevailed since the Second Industrial Revolution, reaching its apogee in the capitalist production system with Taylor-Fordism. It was not found in the literature an approach to telework with a focus on the interaction between individuals, the core of the Weberian theory of social action. Habermas’ theory of communicative action, in this approach, is used to emphasize the importance of language and communication in telework.
