Abstract Since the advent of Apple’s iPhone, the smartphone industry has been producing new technologies and concepts at an accelerated pace. The speed of progress in this sector is exponentially increasing in accordance with Moore’s Law, and smartphones are rapidly changing various aspects of human life. Especially, object control technologies using smartphones are being utilized in various sectors, including robots, home automation, and smart objects. However, the current smartphone object control technology is limited in terms of multicontrol. This study proposes the combined usage of the Bluetooth and Zigbee Modules for multiple object control using smartphones, and presents the necessary application design properties and the methodology for Zigbee communication. The study is an attempt at a territorial expansion of design, as a proposal of new methods for utilizing smartphones in the age of smart objects. Influence of Social Currency on Customers Purchase Intention, mediated by Brand Equity Elements: A Case of Smart phone Market in Islamabad

Current study highlights the contribution of social currency in developing brand equity and purchase intention, and validate the formative construct of social currency not only to develop brand equity but also to significantly improve customer’s purchase intention. The main objective was to find out the mediating role of brand equity elements in relationship between social currency and purchase intention in smart phone industry. Data was collected from smart phone brand users in Islamabad. 600 questionnaires were distributed and 396 complete responses were received, making a response rate of 66%. Data was analyzed through SPSS and AMOS Graphics. Reliability, Validity, Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Path analysis was performed to test the hypotheses. Results indicated that social currency has a positive and significant impact on brand equity elements (i.e. brand trust, perceived quality and brand image). Also, brand trust, perceived quality and brand image partially mediates the relationship between social currency and purchase intention. This study contributes to social capital and consumer socialization perspective of social currency in developing brand equity and purchase intention. The study also contributes to smart phone industry, and provides guidelines to improve brand equity and purchase intention through social media and engaging customers over the online and offline platforms. At the end, conclusion, limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.

The impact of patent litigation on shareholder value in the smartphone industry

In recent years, patent lawsuits in the smartphone industry have become a sensitive issue. While numerous studies have investigated the wealth effect of patent and corporate litigation, few have examined current patent litigation in the smartphone industry. This paper investigates the wealth effect of patent lawsuits between Apple and other smartphone manufacturers, such as Samsung and HTC, using an event study method. The empirical results show that a firm in a vantage position in a patent lawsuit experiences a positive stock price return when it sues a rival firm for patent infringement, but one that does not have a vantage position in a patent lawsuit experiences a negative stock price return when sued by a rival firm. The results also show that in contrast to the general findings, Apple experienced negative stock returns regardless of its litigation position when it fought Nokia, but it did not experience any abnormal stock return regardless of its litigation position in disputes with Asian firms. However, consistent with the general findings, Asian firms experienced negative stock returns when they were sued by Apple.

One Ring to Unite Them All: Convergence, the Smartphone, and the Cloud

This paper examines how recent trends in the smartphone industry may be expanding previous conceptions of the industry and its boundaries. The increasing importance of Internet and cloud-based services—which in many ways lie outside the control of the physical device, operating system, and even the cellular network—seems to be changing the roles and strategies of key firms in the ecosystem. Using industry architecture and platform theory, we examine how the key firms seem to be reacting to these new changes. Our analysis indicates that the platform “bottleneck,” or key control point, is moving away from the device and into the cloud, where a new meta-platform based on the Internet may be emerging.

Exploring the effect of structural patent indicators in forward patent citation networks on patent price from firm market value

This paper introduces structural patent indicators in the forward patent citation networks (FPCNs). Using the estimates of their relationship with firm market value, it explores the effect of the structural patent indicators on patent price. When applied to US smartphone industry and US drug and biotechnology industry, the common finding is that a firm's registered patent gets higher price if influenced faster by the previously registered patents of the same firm through self-citations. The empirical results imply that merely counting forward citations, shown related to patent price by the previous works, is insufficient; the structural properties in FPCNs are essential for the more accurate estimation of patent price. They also show that the relationships between structural patent indicators in the FPCNs and patent price are different between industries. It urges the necessity of selecting structural patent indicators, well fitted to each industry, for the better patent valuation using forward citations.

Processing Shotgun Proteomics Data on the Amazon Cloud with the Trans-Proteomic Pipeline

Cloud computing, where scalable, on-demand compute cycles and storage are available as a service, has the potential to accelerate mass spectrometry-based proteomics research by providing simple, expandable, and affordable large-scale computing to all laboratories regardless of location or information technology expertise. We present new cloud computing functionality for the Trans-Proteomic Pipeline, a free and open-source suite of tools for the processing and analysis of tandem mass spectrometry datasets. Enabled with Amazon Web Services cloud computing, the Trans-Proteomic Pipeline now accesses large scale computing resources, limited only by the available Amazon Web Services infrastructure, for all users. The Trans-Proteomic Pipeline runs in an environment fully hosted on Amazon Web Services, where all software and data reside on cloud resources to tackle large search studies. In addition, it can also be run on a local computer with computationally intensive tasks launched onto the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud service to greatly decrease analysis times. We describe the new Trans-Proteomic Pipeline cloud service components, compare the relative performance and costs of various Elastic Compute Cloud service instance types, and present on-line tutorials that enable users to learn how to deploy cloud computing technology rapidly with the Trans-Proteomic Pipeline. We provide tools for estimating the necessary computing resources and costs given the scale of a job and demonstrate the use of cloud enabled Trans-Proteomic Pipeline by performing over 1100 tandem mass spectrometry files through four proteomic search engines in 9 h and at a very low cost.

Conceptual Paper on Factors Affecting the Attitude of Senior Citizens towards Purchase of Smartphones

Smartphones have gained huge popularity globally among the youth and its distinct advantages and improved features ensure that smartphones are here to stay in the market for a considerable amount of time. However there is still an opportunity lying for the smartphone industry to capitalize on the senior citizens segment. This research paper endeavors to understand the expectations of the senior citizens from phones and how these expectations influence their intention towards smartphone purchase. This paper proposes a conceptual framework mapping the various factors that affect senior citizens to the extent to which these factors influence people while making a purchase decision.

Why do category labels stick? Industry evolution and the battle for categorical dominance

A growing body of literature has shown that categorical affiliation affects firm performance. However, little is known about what drives the adoption of category labels in emerging industries. Using data from the smartphone industry from 1998 to 2011 we track firms? adoption of category labels over time. We argue and find support for a trade-off between the degree of familiarity and originality when firms make affiliation choices. In contrast to the existing literature, we show that familiarity and originality are not two ends of a spectrum, but represent distinct dimensions. The labels that diffuse most widely are, therefore, the ones that balance both familiarity and originality simultaneously. In other words, successful category labels are familiar, but not too familiar to be uninteresting, and original, but not too original that stakeholders cannot relate to them. We end the paper by discussing the implications of our findings for category dynamics in emerging industries and the consequences our findings have when firms make affiliation choices.

Comparative efficiency assessment and strategic benchmarking of smartphone providers with data envelopment analysis

The purpose of this study is to conduct comparative efficiency assessment and strategic benchmarking of smartphone providers. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is useful in examining competitive patterns of products and services. Since smartphone products are moved away from functional devices into platform products and services, the new business model focuses on perpetual dynamic value deployment beyond hardware functionality of products. In this research, DEA is utilised as a strategic decision support tool that measures the extent of firm efficiencies based on multiple year performance outcomes. DEA efficiency trend in particular is a significant indicator of a company's near future sustainability. This study is the first attempt of benchmarking smartphone industry where short–term strategy and rapid innovation precedes long term tactics and incremental improvement.

세대간 스마트폰 사용에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 비교·연구: 뉴실버 세대와 넷 세대를 중심으로

The introduction of smartphone caused the most revolutionary change in the domestic telecommunications market after the digital revolution. However, due to the saturation of the local market, it is expected to post negative growth in 2016 and the sales of national communication carriers is in stasis. Thus, the smartphone industry is starting to shift its marketing efforts to secure the silver generation who still has room for increase in the rate of smartphone usage. As the silver generation has physical limitations and differences in needs, the marketing strategy based on the smartphone utilization is not appropriate. This study suggests the new silver generation, who has high income level and similar characteristics to the younger generation, as the new customer segment for smartphone. We analyze the effects of the major variables of UTAUT on smartphone use, as well as examine how these relationships differ between the new silver and the net generation. We verified the hypotheses using a survey with 309 smartphone users. The research findings supported the hypotheses regarding the effects of performance expectancy, effort expectancy and facilitating conditions on smartphone use, but did not support the hypothesis on the effect of social influence. The result of the group comparisons showed that both generation have similar characteristics on innovativeness and cognitive absorption, but the moderating effect of age on performance expectancy, effort expectancy and use is stronger in conjunction with the new silver generation. The study results are expected to be used in establishing a marketing strategy for the new silver generation.

Free or bundled: Channel selection decisions under different power structures

The smart phone industry has unique supply chain relationships. Companies at all levels of the supply chain compete and coordinate with each other for market share and profit. This paper examines the impact of power structures on the decision of pricing and channel selection between a free channel and a bundled channel. We investigate the smart phone supply chain that consists of a handset manufacturer and a telecom service operator. Based on game theory models, the manufacturer׳s optimal retail pricing policies in free and bundled channels and the telecom service operator׳s optimal subsidy policies in a bundled channel are derived under different power structures. It is demonstrated that the firm that has higher channel power will gain more profit, and the smart phone supply chain׳s profit in a Vertical Nash (VN) power structure is higher than that in Telecom Service Operator-Stackelberg (TS) and Manufacturer-Stackelberg (MS) power structures. It is also shown that the smart phone supply chain will choose a bundled channel in TS and MS power structures under certain conditions and will select a free channel in a VN power structure.

What Consumers Value: Learning from Ten Years of Smartphones

Value is a new and (potentially) better way for Managers to understand innovation. This paper reports the implications for Managers of a value theory of innovation, in a consumer context. Value concepts are introduced, including Value Meanings (what consumers value), Value Practices (how consumers assess value) and overall value (what value endures). Two ways Managers innovate and create value are introduced; Value Management and Value Leadership. These value concepts are examined in the context of three companies who were major players in the Australian smartphone industry over the last ten years; Apple, designer of the iPhone, Telstra, the telco incumbent and Hutchison Whampoa, the innovator who first brought 3G smartphones to Australia.

This research analyzed the difference between standardized advertising and localized (adapted) advertising based on the perception of consumers from China and the U.S. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses have been using to evaluate different marketing approaches in multiple international markets. The emphasis of this study focuses on evaluating the efficiency of advertising by assessing to what extent a standardized and localized commercial enhances brand preference and consumer’s likelihood to purchase. Quantitative analysis was conducted to identify the significance of the difference between the efficiency of standardized advertising and localized advertising in the smartphone industry, based on the perception of consumers from China and the United States in the smartphone industry. By testing the significance of the hypothesis on ad standardization and localization, some implications are suggested. The results show that it is more effective to implement a standardized ad rather than a localized ad in China. Although the sample data of this study is collected from China and the U.S., qualitative analysis covers multiple nations from Asia to Europe and has meaningful empirical value for MNCs to develop business in those countries

Smart Phone Litigation and Standard Essential Patents

The recent sensationalizing of litigation in the smart phone industry has fostered several concerns, in particular those relating directly to the so-called standard essential patents (SEPs). It has been argued that the smart phone industry has seen a dramatic rise in litigation, driven by SEPs whose owners can cause potential “patent hold-up” of downstream manufacturing firms implementing the standards via the threat of seeking an injunction in courts for their patent rights. Yet, no clear evidence has been offered by the literature regarding any systematic effects of these so-called SEPs on litigation, disputes, or market outcomes. This study explores novel empirical evidence by creating and examining a unique data-set on recent litigation in the smart phone industry to inform the debate on the smart phone wars by understanding how they relate to SEPs and other relevant industry factors. We find that the litigation in the smart phone industry is primarily driven by patents that are not related to the standards, i.e., on implementation or design specific features of mobile devices. Moreover, litigation outcomes are driven by patent quality rather than the type of patents (SEPs or not). Finally, the recent explosion in smart phone litigation may be explained by a disruption in the mobile wireless ecosystem due to new and large industry entrants, and this litigation trend may be on a decline. These findings suggest that in the realm of smart phone wars, the focus specifically on SEPs needs to be revisited, the litigation outcomes are based on the quality of litigated patents, and that recent litigation activity in this industry may be explained by industry dynamics rather than related to patents. Concerns about SEPs and smart phone litigation need to be examined empirically prior to proposing policy measures.

Innovation and competition in the smartphone industry: Is there a dominant design?

The mobile phone industry is a very innovative segment within the ICT sector and the smartphone is becoming the standard configuration among the different types of mobile devices. Technical change and new product proliferation have made this industry extremely dynamic, even if market shares are highly concentrated in the hands of very few companies. The present article investigates whether a dominant design has emerged in the smartphone industry. In particular, it studies the evolution in hardware components relying upon an original dataset of product characteristics including all smartphones launched in the market between 2004 and 2013. Results show that, despite some convergence in the introduction of vertical innovations, product differentiation still characterizes the competition among manufacturers and a dominant design has not yet emerged.

Issues faced by Apple Inc in smart phones industry

Purpose:This case suggests the development of financial reporting of Apple Inc. in comparison with the industry over the period of 2004 to 2013. This study is helpful for different field of researchers e.g., management, technology, etc. Apple Inc. was found in 1976 by Steve Jobs. In 2007, Apple introduced smartphones and iOS and was the pioneer in this industry. But after the rising competition in this industry Androids snatched the market share from the Apple.Methodology:This study illustrates the reasons and the current performance of the company in the industry. The performance has been measured through actual financial data and through various financial techniques.Findings:This study has found that the company is losing share in the market because of the features in its products whereas the features offered by other competitors are relative consumer friendly and according to their demand.Suggestions:To retain the market share Apple should offer more products that are more affordable for the consumers.

The Smartphone Royalty Stack: Surveying Royalty Demands for the Components Within Modern Smartphones

The smartphone industry has experienced a high number of patent cases over the past few years. These cases have highlighted the interplay among patent law, competition law, and the marketplace itself. This paper addresses the informational gap in the ongoing debate among courts, litigants, regulators, standard-setting organizations, and academics about the “royalty stack” for smartphones and the legal and policy implications that follow from the magnitude of such royalties. Using publicly-available data, the paper details U.S. patent royalty costs across smartphone components from wireless technologies to operating systems to user interfaces to outer-product design, addressing royalties on both product-differentiating technologies and standardized functions subject to commitments to license on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (“FRAND”) terms. Where specific royalty information is not publicly available for a particular component, the article provides an overview of the amount of litigation relating to the component as a proxy for the likelihood of royalties.

Mapping the perspectives of coopetition and technology-based strategic networks: A case of smartphones

The aim of this study is to introduce and rearrange various coopetition perspectives and consider their implications in the context of a technology-based case study example from the smartphone industry and especially with the state of strategic networks between smartphone producers and operating systems at one chosen moment (autumn 2012). The case study analysis is based on a strategic map of the (technical) coalitions of firms (cf. Näsi et al., 2001). The most important introduced coopetitive features are present in the studied case. This study emphasizes in the literature review the dichotomy between contextual and procedural coopetition. However, this dichotomy is not solid in practice according to the studied case: the same firm might simultaneously have both contextual and procedural features. The study reveals this overlapping and multidimensional character of coopetition generally and its technological dimension in practice, and the general need to continue to study these coopetitive features. The study shows that contemporary theoretical typologies and frameworks of coopetition require experiments in order to direct the coopetition discussions toward the practical phenomena of business.
