Data-driven insights into age-friendly smart community development in China: A case study of Beijing

The aging society has prompted a re-evaluation of community development strategies to better accommodate the needs of older populations. In this context, the concept of age-friendly smart communities has gained prominence, aiming to leverage technologies to enhance the quality of life for older residents. This article summarizes a general concept of an age-friendly community within the framework of smart city development in China. It then explores residential compounds in Beijing to investigate their potential for implementing age-friendly smart communities. Through data description and classification, the spatial distribution and local characteristics of residential compounds were examined. The results highlight housing compounds with the potential to become age-friendly smart communities, based on factors such as building age, population demographics, and typological differences reflecting community conditions and surrounding resources. Overall, by examining the intersection of the aging population, urban regeneration, and technology integration, this article contributes to understanding how data-driven insights can shape the evolution of smart communities in an aging society.

Exploring determinants of residents’ participation intention towards smart community construction by extending the TPB: a case study of Shenzhen city

PurposeSmart community construction (SCC) and efficiency require resident participation. This paper aims to explore the determinants of residents’ participation intention (RPI) in the SCC.Design/methodology/approachBased on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this study proposed an extended conceptual model to deeply analyze the RPI in the SCC. The relationship between all constructs was verified by processing and analyzing online survey data using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), structural equation model (SEM), and bootstrapping method.FindingsParticipation attitude, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, and perceived usefulness significantly and positively affected the RPI. Furthermore, intermediary effects in the extended conceptual model had been confirmed.Originality/valueTo fill the critical gap in the research on the determinants of the RPI in the SCC context, this study developed a novel conceptual model by extending the TPB to analyze the effects of self-driven and externally-driven factors on the RPI from the perspectives of residents’ psychology and external environment. The findings not only clarify the complex process of forming the RPI in the SCC but also provide a theoretical foundation for studying the RPI in similar community construction projects. Additionally, several strategies have been proposed to encourage residents’ participation in the SCC and promote the development of smart communities, such as clarifying residents’ participation obligations, improving the convenience services of smart communities, and diversifying residents’ participation approaches.

Off-Grid Electrification Using Renewable Energy in the Philippines: A Comprehensive Review

Universal access to electricity is beneficial for the socio-economic development of a country and the development of smart communities. Unfortunately, the electrification of remote off-grid areas, especially in developing countries, is rather slow due to geographic and economic barriers. In the Philippines, specifically, many electrified off-grid areas are underserved, with access to electricity being limited to only a few hours a day. This is mainly due to the high dependence on diesel power plants (DPPs) for electrifying these areas. To address these problems, hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs) have been considered good electrification alternatives and have been extensively studied for their techno-economic and financial feasibility for Philippine off-grid islands. In this work, articles published from 2012 to 2023 focusing on off-grid Philippine rural electrification were reviewed and classified based on their topic. The taxonomical analysis of collected studies shows that there is a saturation of works focusing on the technical and economic aspects of off-grid electrification. Meanwhile, studies focusing on environmental and socio-political factors affecting HRES off-grid electrification are lagging. A bibliographic analysis of the reviewed articles also showed that there is still a lack of a holistic approach in studying off-grid electrification in the Philippines. There are only a few works that extend beyond the typical techno-economic study. Research works focusing on environmental and socio-political factors are also mainly isolated and do not cross over with technical papers. The gap between topic clusters should be addressed in future works on off-grid electrification.

Analysis of influencing factors and their inner mechanism of the market participation in the smart community construction of China

Market participation promotion is vital to ensure the efficacy of smart community construction and sustainable advancement. Previous studies focused on smart community construction but ignored analyzing market participation affecting factors in smart community construction and their inner mechanism, rendering the promotion of market participation challenging. This study aimed to get a clear structure of the influencing factors of smart community construction by developing a comprehensive analytical framework. Initially, systematic literature review (SLR) and grounded theory (GT) were employed to identify a comprehensive list of nine crucial influencing factors. Subsequently, the expert interview (EI) and interpretive structural modeling (ISM) were utilized to establish a four-level model for factors influencing market participation. Finally, a strategic framework comprising 17 specific strategies, aimed at addressing key influencing factors, was proposed from the stakeholders' perspective. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors that influence market participation and shed light on the inner relationships among these factors, thereby enriching the knowledge system of smart community construction. Furthermore, this study provides practical insights for stakeholders to effectively foster market engagement in smart community development.

Research on the Influencing Factors of Sustainable Development of Smart Community

The sustainable development of China’s smart community is the top priority of grassroots governance in China and also the general trend of China’s urban modernization. Sustainable development of smart community with the use of the new generation of information technology actively explores the development model of smart community construction and improves the modern level of community governance. The sustainable development of smart communities in China cannot be separated from the participation of residents. This study analyzes the relationship between the sustainable development of smart communities and the participation of Chinese residents. Data were collected through questionnaire survey, and SEM model was used to analyze the impact of different factors of residents’ participation on the sustainable development of smart communities as well as the differences among these factors. The results of the study are as follows. Chinese smart community is in the initial stage of development, and the overall participation level of residents is relatively shallow, with few active participation behaviors. To realize the sustainable development of smart community in China, a multilevel governance pattern should be constructed from the perspective of government. Community and residents, the thinking mode of grassroots government, should be changed. The service supply system of smart community should be improved, and the initiative of residents should be given full play to better realize the sustainable development of smart community.

Building an Urban Smart Community System Based on Association Rule Algorithms

Intelligent system development is an integral component of smart community development and has a significant impact on the development of smart communities. Some cities continue to implement personalized smart community services, resulting in the formation of smart city communities with unique characteristics. Urban smart communities are based on the principle of owner-occupant convenience, integrating a wealth of community information and making it more relevant to each and every resident through intelligent management. Increasing information transmission rates have enhanced the ability of smart community systems to integrate information, but the smart community recommendation method is still based on traditional categorized recommendations. This paper addresses the deficiency of recommended information in smart urban communities. By analyzing user interaction and operation data, we can determine the interest and recognition of browsing attractions among users. Compared to conventional classification recommendations, weighted association rules can identify potentially very important rules applicable to small groups, thereby meeting the needs of various groups and enabling personalized services. Through continuous feedback from user behavior data, the system gradually identifies the community information that users are interested in during the specific recommendation process. After testing, the smart community system’s recommendation accuracy and real-time performance have vastly improved in comparison to categorical recommendations, and it can effectively meet the needs of tenants for community recommendations.

Measures and Suggestions for Smart Community Development Based on Urban Renewal

The development mode of urban construction has gradually changed from the rapid development and construction mode of new areas to the renewal of old urban areas. The old urban areas are demolished, transformed, upgraded, invested, and constructed, and the backward urban functions are replaced with new urban functions and then restore vitality and prosperity. In urban renewal, the upgrading and transformation of urban information infrastructure and intelligent systems is an important part of urban development, and the smart community construction system is a new development concept after urbanization has been updated to a certain extent. The goal is to address the disparity between the material and cultural needs of a growing population and the unbalanced and unplanned management of cities. In addition, with the rapid development of information technology, new applications and demands emerge. Based on urban renewal, this paper proposes corresponding countermeasures for the upgrading and transformation of intelligent facilities and intelligent application in the development of smart communities in combination with new technologies such as cloud computing, big data, Internet of Things, 5G, and AI for reference in planning and design.

Analysis of the Smart Medical Service Model in Super-Aged Society-UR Agency as an Example.

Urban Renaissance (UR) Agency in Japan is one of the world's largest public housing institutions. When faced with the serious aging problems in Japan, the Japanese implemented innovative reform, with the smart medical and pension service launched according to the characteristics of resident population and their variation trends. As it well mastered the actual needs of residents by establishing the intelligent medical system, the occupancy rate was increased. Meanwhile, the problem of inadequate local medical resources was solved, with the satisfaction of residents as well as the cultural exchange and integration within communities ameliorated, which hence realized the sustainable development of communities. In this study, the smart medical experience of Urban Renaissance Agency in Japan was explored in the hope of providing enlightenment for the development of smart communities in China. Relevant Chinese enterprises can draw lessons from the experience of community services in Japan, and via the cooperation among industries, governments, and universities, they can collaborate with universities, scientific research institutions, high-tech enterprises, district governments, and grassroots communities to give full play to the advantages of the platform and improve service quality.

Smart Communities and Community Empowerment for Environmental Sustainability

The development of urban systems towards smart cities encourages the existence of smart communities as well. Smart communities are influenced by social developments in the community, which is dynamic and influenced by society and individuals’ social level. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the use of social capital in building a smart society. This article uses the qualitative method analysis which is a literature study of 18 documents. Based on the literature study, the use of social capital in the community can encourage community empowerment activities because trust and a cooperative attitudes are built among residents. This will affect the habits and activities of individuals in society, such as the development process of protecting the environment. Increasing empowerment activities will help accelerate the process of developing a smart community. Therefore, social capital is essential in the development of smart communities and smart cities.

Impact of Smart City Planning and Construction on Community Governance under Dynamic Game

We present a research on smart city planning and community governance using dynamic game methods, analyze the current status and problems of the current smart community service system, and put forward countermeasures and suggestions based on the global smart community development experience. Through smart city planning and construction, the game model of government governance and information sharing between communities and decision making is obtained, and the two-dimensional replication dynamic system equations of smart city planning and construction agencies and communities are obtained from smart city planning and construction. The evolutionary stability strategy and a united front are analyzed. The strategy achieves the ideal stable conditions. We define the relevant definition of a smart community and discuss the purpose and significance of the research, especially the importance and necessity of the construction of the smart community. Based on the current situation of the construction of smart communities, we conduct specific research, discuss the deficiencies and shortcomings in the current construction of smart communities, and find out the causes of these problems. Finally, based on learning from the relevant work experience, corresponding improvement measures are proposed for the existing problems from the united front, top-level design, social participation, platform construction, and talent training.

Smart community guideline: case study on the development process of smart communities in Japan

With the increasing demand for a sustainable society, smart community—a community that focuses on both environmental, social, and information technology efforts— become one of the answers to provide a more sustainable society. Despite the urgency to develop a smart community, the definition of what requirement should be included and the guideline on how to develop a smart community is not enough. In this paper, a case study on the Japanese smart community development measures is done, and the general development process of Japanese smart community is suggested based on the measures. The study was done on five representative cases and 14 measures were collected and classified into three categories based on the development process.

A methodological framework for sustainable development with vulnerable communities

The Smart Community Development Framework (SCDF) is a methodological framework that selectively identifies and optimizes sustainable development approaches such as permaculture, sustainable livelihood approaches, community-based social marketing, environmental impact assessments and project management to effectively design and introduce clean social technologies for and with vulnerable communities. The framework was created and evaluated with the goal of ensuring community-empowered decision-making that will result in permanent and sustainable improvements to community design, infrastructure, and technology. The SCDF model is a workflow model that supports communities in establishing their vulnerability level and identifying problems; selecting targeted actions; determining resource availability and major obstacles; optimizing specific appropriate technologies and social programmes to address problems; assessing environment impact and implementation; analyzing empowerment; and developing power transfer guidelines. Local leaders, engineers, project managers and policymakers can use the SCDF model to collaborate in the formulation of effective action plans worldwide.

Emerging scenarios of data infrastructure and novel concepts of digital libraries in intelligent infrastructure for human-centred communities: A qualitative research

This research investigated the strategic development of a large-scale transdisciplinary area, named intelligent infrastructure for human-centred communities, at Virginia Tech. Within such development, this study explored the future vision and anticipated scenarios of data infrastructure and digital libraries for smart community development. It draws upon the mixed-methods approach combining ethnographic participant observation, document analysis and semi-structured interviews. Grounded in socio-technical framework and rooted in empirical methods, this research produces results that augment design thinking and visioning practice for digital data libraries beyond traditional boundaries. The findings reveal the emerging scenarios around complex adaptive systems, intelligent data infrastructure and future digital libraries all in the context of building infrastructure for human-centred communities. Situated in this advancing reality, the results further discuss the next-generation data and information user experience, smart infrastructure data environment and future library capabilities. The article concludes that a smart library system, whether in its conceptual form of a ‘digital octopus’ or a ‘smart village data hub’ or an ‘intelligent virtual assistant’, will provide intelligence in data gathering, processing, summarising, communication and recommendations. By delivering unified and personalised data solutions, it will offer an end-to-end seamless experience for users throughout their journey of knowledge pursuit.

Small and Smart: Why and How Smart City Solutions Can and Should be Adapted to the Unique Needs of Smaller Cities

Abstract Research and development on smart cities has been growing rapidly. Smart cities promise a new era of living efficiently, sustainably, and safely. The tools and technologies deployed aim to drive better public decision-making on everything from where we live to how we work. While the world is rapidly urbanizing, a substantial percentage of the population still lives in smaller and rural communities. Smart city solutions as they are defined here are process driven and not constrained by population or geographic metrics; they are the application of technology and data to improve the quality of life. Smaller communities can also be smart, and excluding or ignoring them widens inequality, limits use cases, and restrains innovation. Using South Bend, Indiana as an example, the authors examine the power and potential of smaller smart cities. They then transfer this thinking to Georgia and Georgia Tech’s initiative working with local governments across the state on smart community development. This article is one of the first of its kinds in examining smaller smart communities as models for smart living.
