Spatial downscaling of SMAP soil moisture estimation using multiscale geographically weighted regression during SMAPVEX16

Passive microwave remote sensing missions such as Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) are widely used for global soil moisture (SM) estimation. But the low spatial resolution of passive microwave SM products limits their applications at regional and local scales (normally 1–10 km). Using high-resolution auxiliary data to downscale passive microwave SM products is the primary way to obtain high-resolution SM data. However, the existing SM downscaling methods do not entirely account for the scale differences in the impact of various variables on the distribution of SM. To solve this problem, this paper introduced MGWR (Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression) as a novel way to analyze the scale differences of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) on the spatial pattern of SM. Accordingly, a new spatial downscaling algorithm for SMAP SM products is proposed and compared with the geographically weighted regression (GWR) algorithm and moving window algorithm (MW). The algorithm was applied to data taken during the SMAP Validation Experiment 2016 (SMAPVEX16), and the downscaled SM evaluated with in situ SM and aircraft observations. These results show that: 1) the SM downscaling conversion function, based on the MGWR, effectively reveals how different surface parameters relate to SM, with LST influencing SM globally and NDVI affecting it locally, 2) compared with GWR and MW, the 1 km SM obtained by the MGWR-based downscaling method showed better spatial agreement with airborne SM in the semiarid region with the ubRMSE decreasing by 0.023 m3/m3 and 0.026 m3/m3 for GWR and MW respectively, 3) when evaluating the 1 km SM with in situ SM in the semiarid region, the SM obtained through MGWR exhibited lower ubRMSE values as compared to both GWR and MW. Specifically, the median ubRMSE values for MGWR, GWR, and MW were 0.043 m3/m3, 0.053 m3/m3, and 0.094 m3/m3, respectively. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that MGWR can effectively improve the accuracy of downscaled SM in semiarid regions.

Evaluation of 22 CMIP6 model-derived global soil moisture products of different shared socioeconomic pathways

The Sixth Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) provides ample soil moisture (SM) products during 2015–2100, which are widely used in investigating future hydrological pattern. However, there remains limited understanding regarding the accuracy of multi-model CMIP6 SM future simulations following different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP). This study assesses the spatial–temporal accuracy of 22 CMIP6 model-derived SM products using 670 ground observation stations globally during 2015–2023. Each CMIP6 model encompasses SM estimations from SSP1-2.6 (The sustainable pathway), SSP2-4.5 (The medium pathway), and SSP5-8.5 (Fossil-fueled development). The latest Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast Reanalysis v5-Land (ERA5-Land) SM products serve as reference benchmarks. The SM among three SSPs within the same model exhibits similar performance in in situ validation, the extended triple collocation assessment, and the classical seasonal decomposition trend analysis. This similarity may suggest a subtle variation in the influence of different SSPs on SM in the early stages of the future scenario. The majority of CMIP6 model-derived SM could reasonably capture the spatial distribution pattern and temporal evolution trend of the truth value. Meanwhile, noticeable discrepancies in accuracy, particularly regarding goodness-of-fit, are evident when compared to SMAP and ERA5-Land SM products. The CMIP6 models could provide better SM estimation in temperate and tropical zones than cold zones. In terms of differences between the land cover types, CMIP6 model-derived SM products perform well over various vegetated regions except for barren, where there are sequential overestimation and relatively low fitting degree. Extensive accuracy discrepancies exist among the 22 CMIP6 model-derived SM products due to variations in model parameterization methods and atmospheric variables.

Downscaling SMAP soil moisture product in cold and arid region: Incorporating NDSI and BSI into the random forest algorithm

AbstractSoil moisture (SM) is a critical element of the hydrological cycle, land surface processes, and surface energy balance. However, the low spatial resolution of commonly used SM products limits the application of SM in agriculture and eco‐hydrology in cold and arid regions. In this study, the normalized difference soil index (NDSI) and bare soil index (BSI) were added to traditional downscaling factors including land surface temperature, normalized difference vegetation index, digital elevation mode, apparent thermal inertia, Albedo, and temperature vegetation dryness index, as they are more strongly correlated with surface SM in the bare soil‐vegetation alternation zone of such region. Using the random forest algorithm, a downscaling model of SM was constructed for such region. The accuracy of the downscaled SM estimates was validated by comparing them with the original SM data collected from May to September 2021, which is the non‐freezing period of the soil. The findings indicate that the newly added NDSI and BSI have good correlation with SM. Incorporating NDSI and BSI to construct the downscaled model enhances the accuracy by over 19% compared to excluding them, while also providing a more comprehensive representation of SM information. NDSI and BSI can be well applied to the downscaled research of SM in the bare soil‐vegetation alternation zone, which is of great value for the study of eco‐hydrology and agricultural drought monitoring in cold and arid regions.

Exploring Forest Fire Dynamics: Fire Danger Mapping in Antalya Region, Türkiye

The Mediterranean region experiences the annual destruction of thousands of hectares due to climatic conditions. This study examines forest fires in Türkiye’s Antalya region, a Mediterranean high-risk area, from 2000 to 2023, analyzing 26 fires that each damaged over 50 hectares. Fire danger maps created from fire weather indexes (FWI) indicated that 85.7% of the analyzed fire areas were categorized within the high to very extreme danger categories. The study evaluated fire danger maps from EFFIS FWI and ERA5 FWI, both derived from meteorological satellite data, for 14 forest fires between 2019 and 2023. With its better spatial resolution, it was found that EFFIS FWI had a higher correlation (0.98) with in situ FWIs. Since FWIs are calculated from temperature and fire moisture subcomponents, the correlations of satellite-based temperature (MODIS Land Surface Temperature—LST) and soil moisture (SMAP) data with FWIs were investigated. The in situ FWI demonstrated a positive correlation of 0.96 with MODIS LST, 0.92 with EFFIS FWI, and 0.93 with ERA5 FWI. The negative correlation between all FWIs and SMAP soil moisture highlighted a strong relationship, with the highest observed in in situ FWI (−0.93) and −0.90 and −0.87 for EFFIS FWI and ERA5 FWI, respectively.

Characterizing large‐scale preferential flow across Continental United States

AbstractUnderstanding preferential flow (PF) at large scales is critical for improving land management and groundwater (GW) quality. However, limited knowledge of this process, due to soil surface heterogeneity and observational constraints, hampers progress. In this study, we propose estimating effective PF at remote sensing footprint scale (4–9 km) by examining its impact on soil moisture (SM) distribution and shallow groundwater (SGW) table fluctuations (depth 5 m). Effective PF encompasses macropore, funnel, and finger flow pathways influencing SGW table fluctuations. We compiled daily SGW observations (2019–2021) from 19 Continental United States (CONUS) sites through United States Geological Survey. Using inverse modeling in HYDRUS‐1D, SGW data, and climate hazards group infrared precipitation with station data precipitation, we inversely estimated soil hydraulic parameters of the dual‐porosity model (DPM) simulating vertical flow from soil surface to subsurface. Effective PF presence was inferred using three criteria: (1) daily precipitation equal to or exceeding the site‐specific average across multiple (calibration) years, (2) daily observed SGW table increase, and (3) daily difference between observed and DPM simulated SGW tables 50% of the site‐specific root mean square error. Leveraging optimized DPM parameters and associated soil texture, classified PF events, and soil moisture active passive (SMAP L3E) satellite‐based SM, a random forest algorithm with 10‐fold cross validation predicted large‐scale effective PF events. Results indicate seasonal dependence, with spring having the highest occurrence of PF events. The random forest model achieved 98% accuracy in predicting large‐scale PF events, with SMAP SM and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) among the four most impactful variables. Our approach provides a soil hydraulic property, site characteristic, soil texture, and remote sensing‐based generalized tool to analyze large‐scale effective PF.

Spatial downscaling of SMAP radiometer soil moisture using radar data: Application of machine learning to the SMAPEx and SMAPVEX campaigns

This study developed a random forest approach for downscaling the coarse-resolution (36 km) soil moisture measured by The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission to 1 km spatial resolution, utilizing airborne remotely sensed data (radar backscatter and radiometer retrieved soil moisture), vegetation characteristics (normalized difference vegetation index), soil properties, topography, and ground soil moisture measurements from before the launch of SMAP for training a random forest model. The 36 km SMAP soil moisture product was then downscaled by the trained model to 1 km resolution using the information from SMAP. The downscaled soil moisture was evaluated using airborne retrieved soil moisture observations and ground soil moisture measurements. Considering the airborne retrieved soil moisture as a reference, the results demonstrated that the proposed random forest model could downscale the SMAP radiometer product to 1 km resolution with a correlation coefficient of 0.97, unbiased Root Mean Square Error of 0.048 m3 m−3 and bias of 0.016 m3 m−3. Accordingly, the downscaled soil moisture captured the spatial and temporal heterogeneity and demonstrated the potential of the proposed machine learning model for soil moisture downscaling.

A Spatial Downscaling Framework for SMAP Soil Moisture Based on Stacking Strategy

Soil moisture (SM) data can provide guidance for decision-makers in fields such as drought monitoring and irrigation management. Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite offers sufficient spatial resolution for global-scale applications, but its utility is limited in regional areas due to its lower spatial resolution. To address this issue, this study proposed a downscaling framework based on the Stacking strategy. The framework integrated extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM), and categorical boosting (CatBoost) to generate 1 km resolution SM data using 15 high-resolution factors derived from multi-source datasets. In particular, to test the influence of terrain partitioning on downscaling results, Anhui Province, which has diverse terrain features, was selected as the study area. The results indicated that the performance of the three base models varied, and the developed Stacking strategy maximized the potential of each model with encouraging downscaling results. Specifically, we found that: (1) The Stacking model achieved the highest accuracy in all regions, and the performance order of the base models was: XGBoost > CatBoost > LightGBM. (2) Compared with the measured SM at 87 sites, the downscaled SM outperformed other 1 km SM products as well as the downscaled SM without partitioning, with an average ubRMSE of 0.040 m3/m3. (3) The downscaled SM responded positively to rainfall events and mitigated the systematic bias of SMAP. It also preserved the spatial trend of the original SMAP, with higher levels in the humid region and relatively lower levels in the semi-humid region. Overall, this study provided a new strategy for soil moisture downscaling and revealed some interesting findings related to the effectiveness of the Stacking model and the impact of terrain partitioning on downscaling accuracy.

Modelling forest road trafficability with satellite-based soil moisture variables

ABSTRACT Recent decades have seen increased temperatures and precipitation in the Nordic countries with long-term projections for reduced frost duration and depth. The consequence of these trends has been a gradual shift of delivery volumes to the frost-free season, requiring more agile management to exploit suitable weather conditions. Bearing capacity and trafficability are dependent on soil moisture state and in this context two satellite missions offer potenially useful information on soil moisture levels; NASA’s SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) and ESA’s Sentinel-1. The goal of this pilot study was to quantify the performance of such satellite-based soil moisture variables for modeling forest road bearing capacity (e-module) during the frost-free season. The study was based on post-transport registrations of 103 forest road segments on the coastal and interior side of the Scandinavian mountain range. The analysis focused on roads of three types of surface deposits. Weekly SMAP soil moisture values better explained the variation in road e-module than soil water index (SWI) derived from Sentinel-1. Soil Water Index (SWI), however, reflected the weather conditions typical for operations on the respective surface deposit types. Regression analysis using (i) SMAP-based soil dryness index and (ii) its interaction with surface deposit types, together with (iii) the ratio between a combined SMAP_SWI dryness index and segment-specific depth to water (DTW) explained over 70% of the variation in road e-module. The results indicate a future potential to monitor road trafficability over large supply areas on a weekly level, given further refinement of study methods and variables for improved prediction.

Improving SMAP soil moisture spatial resolution in different climatic conditions using remote sensing data.

Soil moisture (SM) at the interface between the land surface and atmosphere is one of the major environmental parameters which plays an important role in hydrological applications. In this article, the SM measured by Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) is downscaled from 3- to 1-km spatial resolution. The main purpose is to evaluate the performance of two different downscaling methods over a variety of climatic conditions and land cover types. These two methods, based on regression and artificial neural network (ANN), are used for enabling us to cross-validate and reliably interpret the obtained results since the number of ground measurements is not sufficient for accuracy assessment. These methods are applied over four different case studies; one is located in the USA, i.e., state of Utah (semi-arid), and the remaining three are located in Iran, i.e., Fars (arid and semi-arid), Yazd (hyper-arid), and Golestan (humid). In both methods, different combinations of input features correlated with SM including land surface temperature (LST), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), brightness temperatures in horizontal and vertical polarizations (TBH and TBV), shortwave infrared (SWIR), and digital elevation model (DEM) are used. It is found that the DEM does not add extra information in downscaling. The reason is due to high correlation between topography and LST. Moreover, SWIR is most likely able to model only large-scale variations of SM. The downscaled SM products are then compared to 1-km resolution SMAP SM extracted from Sentinel-1 for the study areas in Iran and in situ measurements in Utah. Both methods produce results which are considerably consistent except that the regression method adds more spatial details in the downscaled SM. The achievements illustrate that the performance of both downscaling methods is higher in areas with more homogeneous climatic conditions, i.e., Yazd and Golestan. The best evaluation metrics including correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) for Yazd and Golestan are R = 0.89, RMSE = 0.025 m3/m3, and MAPE = 21.13% and R = 0.93, RMSE = 0.044 m3/m3, and MAPE = 21.95%, respectively. Moreover, large model biases are associated with dense vegetated areas and high altitudes. The best downscaling accuracy in both methods over all study areas belongs to bare soil and flat regions.

Studying Brown Ocean Re‐Intensification of Hurricane Florence Using CYGNSS and SMAP Soil Moisture Data and a Numerical Weather Model

AbstractHurricane Florence made landfall over the Carolinas 14 September 2018, bringing over 30 inches of rainfall. What remains understudied is the possible storm re‐intensification by wet and warm antecedent soil moisture (ASM), known as the Brown Ocean Effect (BOE). This study investigates this effect with two approaches: (a) two satellite‐based soil moisture (SM) data and (b) model simulation. The averaged Cyclone Global Navigation System and Soil Moisture Active Passive SM enables examination of land‐atmosphere interaction at a sub‐daily scale. Both observations and simulation results manifest positive feedback between ASM and rainfall intensity, with 3 days prior to landfall being the typical antecedent time scale. Wet (dry) ASM lead to intense (light) and concentrated (widespread) rains. We also found that soil temperature can modulate the BOE. This study aims to advance our understanding of land‐atmosphere feedback and calls to acquire accurate antecedent land states to enhance forecast skills.

Improvement and application on the estimation model of windbreak and sand fixation function based on remote sensing soil moisture factor

Soil moisture factor is one of the important parameters in the study of wind and sand fixation functions of ecosystems. Traditional methods often use potential evaporation, rainfall, and irrigation observed by meteorological stations to estimate soil moisture, which has significant limitations in terms of spatial continuity and data availability. Based on the development of remote sensing technology in soil moisture detection, we selected four remote sen-sing indicators for soil moisture (MODIS evapotranspiration ratio method, SMAP soil moisture ratio method, visible shortwave infrared drought index method, and remote sensing humidity index method) to improve the estimation of soil moisture factor in the modified wind erosion equation model (RWEQ), and used the improved algorithm to analyze the spatiotemporal variations and driving factors of wind prevention and sand fixation services in the northwest region of Liaoning Province from 2001 to 2021. The results showed that the MODIS evapotranspiration ratio method had the highest correlation with traditional meteorological methods in calculating soil moisture. The formula obtained by fitting the two could be used to improve the calculation of soil moisture factor in the RWEQ model. From 2001 to 2021, the wind prevention and sand fixation capacity in the northwest region of Liaoning Province showed strong spatial distribution characteristics in the northern and eastern regions, while weak in the central and western regions. According to Mann-Kendall trend testing, 72.7% of the regions in northwest Liaoning Province were showing an upward trend in their ability to prevent wind and fix sand. The application of geographic detector models for driving factor analysis showed that the change in wind and sand fixation capacity was a process of multiple factors interacting with each other, greatly influenced by soil type, annual wind speed, and economic development level. Moreover, the interaction between various driving factors had a higher impact on wind and sand fixation than that of single factors. The results could improve the RWEQ model estimation and provide technical support for the long-term analysis of ecological function formation mechanisms and driving forces in the northwest region of Liaoning.

Enhanced Soil Moisture Retrieval through Integrating Satellite Data with Pedotransfer Functions in a Complex Landscape of Ethiopia

Remotely sensed soil moisture products potentially provide a valuable resource for monitoring agricultural drought and assessing food security. The agriculture dominated countries of Eastern Africa experience high inter-annual variability of rainfall, but the monitoring and assessment of the predominantly rainfed agriculture systems is hindered by an absence of ground-based observations. This study evaluates the accuracy of three soil moisture products: ASCAT SWI 12.5 km, SMAP soil moisture data 9 km (SPL3SMP_E), and enhanced surface soil moisture map derived through integrating ASCAT SWI and Pedotransfer Functions (PTFs) (ASCAT_PTF_SM), in Ethiopia, through comparison with in situ-observed soil moisture datasets. Additionally, a new water retention PTF, developed for Ethiopian soils, is integrated with a high-resolution soil property dataset to enhance the spatial resolution of the soil moisture product. The results show that the new integrated dataset performs better in terms of unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE = 0.0398 m3/m3) and bias (0.0222 m3/m3) in comparison with ASCAT SWI 12.5 km (ubRMSE = 0.0.0771 m3/m3, bias = 0.1065 m3/m3). SMAP is found to have limitations during the wet season, overestimating soil moisture. The finer spatial resolution of the data allows for a better depiction of heterogeneity of soil moisture across the landscape and can be used to identify water-related issues and improve hydrological models for agricultural water management.

True global error maps for SMAP, SMOS, and ASCAT soil moisture data based on machine learning and triple collocation analysis

Quantifying the accuracy of the satellite-based soil moisture (SM) data is important for a number of key applications, such as: combining satellite-based SM products for long-term SM analyses, assimilating SM data into land surface models, and providing quality flags to mask bad quality SM data.A range of statistical methods have been proposed to estimate error statistics for large-scale SM datasets including the: instrumental variable (IV) method, triple collocation analysis (TCA), and quadruple collocation analysis (QCDA). While requiring only two input products, the IV method also imposes an additional assumption that one input product possesses serially uncorrelated errors - thus limiting its scope compared to TC. Likewise, QCDA requires four independent SM data products that are difficult to obtain and may not always be available for analysis. Nonetheless, TCA-based methods still cannot provide truly global error maps for satellite SM products due to the limited number of independent SM products and difficulties with baseline TCA assumptions. Moreover, temporal sampling requirements for TCA are often impractical because of low SM retrieval skill in forested and arid areas – as well as in regions prone to radio frequency interference.Here, we seek to fill significant spatial gaps in TCA results using machine learning (ML) and therefore provide spatially complete error maps for the satellite-based SM data products derived from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS), and Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) systems. Furthermore, we use SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values, a model-agnostic technique for interpreting ML models, to examine the impact of various environmental conditions on the quality of satellite-based SM retrievals.Globally, and across all three products, 72.0% of missing error information in a TCA-based analysis, due to either the lack of valid data or the inability of TCA to provide reliable results, can be reconstructed from the ensemble prediction mean of the ML models. Overall, we found that 22.7% (a.m.) and 34.2% (p.m.) of the Earth'sSM dynamics (between 60°S to 60°N) have not been investigated properly across all three satellite missions.

Making the Best Use of GRACE, GRACE‐FO and SMAP Data Through a Constrained Bayesian Data‐Model Integration

AbstractThe Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE, 2003–2017) and its Follow‐On mission GRACE‐FO (2018‐now) provide global estimates of the vertically integrated Terrestrial Water Storage Changes (TWSC). Since 2015, the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radiometer observes global L‐band brightness temperatures, which are sensitive to near‐surface soil moisture. In this study, we introduce our newly developed Constrained Bayesian (ConBay) optimization approach to merge the TWSC of GRACE/GRACE‐FO along with SMAP soil moisture data into the ∼10 km resolution W3RA water balance model. ConBay is formulated based on two hierarchical multivariate state‐space models to (I) separate land hydrology compartments from GRACE/GRACE‐FO TWSC, and (II) constrain the estimation of surface soil water storage based on the SMAP data. The numerical implementation is demonstrated over the High Plain (HP) aquifer in the United States between 2015 and 2021. The implementation of ConBay is compared with an unconstrained Bayesian formulation, and our validations are performed against in‐situ USGS groundwater level observations and the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Climate Change Initiative (CCI) soil moisture data. Our results indicate that the single GRACE/GRACE‐FO assimilation improves particularly the groundwater compartment. Adding SMAP data to the ConBay approach controls the updates assigned to the surface storage compartments. For example, correlation coefficients between the ESA CCI and the ConBay‐derived surface soil water storage (0.8) that are considerably higher than those derived from the unconstrained experiment (−0.3) in the North HP. The percentage of updates introduced to the W3RA groundwater storage is also decreased from 64% to 57%.

The Characterization of the Vertical Distribution of Surface Soil Moisture Using ISMN Multilayer In Situ Data and Their Comparison with SMOS and SMAP Soil Moisture Products

In this paper, we investigated the vertical distribution characteristics of surface soil moisture based on ISMN (International Soil Moisture Network) multilayer in situ data (5, 10, and 20 cm; 2, 4, and 8 in) and performed comparisons between the in situ data and four microwave satellite remote sensing products (SMOS L2, SMOS-IC, SMAP L2, and SMAP L4). The results showed that the mean soil moisture difference between layers can be −0.042~−0.024 (for the centimeter group)/−0.067~−0.044 (for the inch group) m3/m3 in negative terms and 0.020~0.028 (for the centimeter group)/0.036~0.040 (for the inch group) m3/m3 in positive terms. The surface soil moisture was found to have very significant stratification characteristics, and the interlayer difference was close to or beyond the SMOS and SMAP 0.04 m3/m3 nominal retrieval accuracy. Comparisons revealed that the satellite retrievals had a higher correlation with the field measurements of 5 cm/2 in, and SMAP L4 had the smallest difference with the in situ data. The mean difference caused by using 10 cm/4 in and 20 cm/8 in in situ data instead of the 5 cm/2 in data could be about −0.019~−0.018/−0.18~−0.015 m3/m3 and −0.026~−0.023/−0.043~−0.039 m3/m3, respectively, meaning that there would be a potential depth mismatch in the data validation.

Assessment of 9 km SMAP soil moisture: Evidence of narrowing the gap between satellite retrievals and model-based reanalysis

A number of global surface soil moisture (SM) datasets have been retrieved from the L-band frequency Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) and the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) missions to study the terrestrial water, energy, and carbon cycles. This paper presents the performance of the recently developed 9 km global SMAP product (hereafter SMAP-INRAE-BORDEAUX, SMAP-IB9). The product retrieves SM from the 9 km SMAP radiometric products using the forward model (L-MEB, L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere) of SMOS INRA-CESBIO (SMOS-IC) and SMOS L2 algorithms. We inter-compared SMAP-IB9 with two other products with a similar grid resolution (∼10 km): the SMAP Enhanced Level-3 SM dataset (SMAP-E) and the enhanced global dataset for the land component of the fifth generation of European reanalysis (ERA5-Land) with the main objective of assessing the discrepancy in accuracy between remotely sensed and model SM datasets. We found that ERA5-Land and SMAP-IB9 SM had the overall highest correlations (R = 0.62(±0.15) for ERA5-Land vs. 0.60(±0.17) for SMAP-IB9 and 0.50(±0.15) for SMAP-E) by comparing with the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) in-situ measurements from 22 networks. ERA5-Land showed better performances in the forest areas where SMAP-IB9 and SMAP-E still showed high potential in detecting the time variations of the observed SM, particularly in terms of median correlation values (0.62(±0.18) for SMAP-IB9 vs. 0.66(±0.16) for ERA5-and). The discrepancy in R between satellite and model SM products that were reported in some past studies has decreased to statistically insignificant levels over time. For instance, in the non-forest areas, we found that the latest versions of the SMAP SM products (SMAP-E and SMAP-IB9) had relatively comparable performances with ERA5-Land with regard to median ubRMSE (0.07(±0.02) m3/m3 for both SMAP-E and ERA5-Land) and R (0.59(±0.16) for SMAP-IB9 vs. 0.61(±0.15) for ERA5-Land), respectively.

Using Robust Regression to Retrieve Soil Moisture from CyGNSS Data

Accurate global soil moisture (SM) data are crucial for modeling land surface hydrological cycles and monitoring climate change. Spaceborne global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) has attracted extensive attention due to its unique advantages, such as faster revisit time, lower payload costs, and all-weather operation. GNSS signal reflected at L-band also has significant advantages for SM estimation. Usually, SM is estimated based on the sensitivity of GNSS-R reflectivity to SM, but the noise in observations can significantly impact SM estimation results. A new SM retrieval method based on robust regression is proposed to address this issue in this work, and the effects of roughness and vegetation on the effective reflectivity of the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CyGNSS) are reconsidered. Ancillary data are provided by the SM Active Passive (SMAP) mission. The retrieved results from the training sets and test sets agree well with the referenced SMAP SM data. The correlation coefficient R is 0.93, the root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.058 cm3cm−3, the unbiased RMSE (ubRMSE) is 0.042 cm3cm−3, and the mean absolute error (MAE) is 0.040 cm3cm−3 in the training sets. For the test, the correlation coefficient is 0.91, the RMSE is 0.067 cm3cm−3, the ubRMSE is 0.051 cm3cm−3, and the MAE is 0.044 cm3cm−3. The proposed method has been evaluated using in situ measurements from the SMAP/in situ core validation site; in situ measurements and retrieval results exhibit good consistency with the ubRMSE value below 0.35 cm3cm−3. Moreover, the SM retrieval results using robust regression methods show better performance than CyGNSS official SM products that use linear regression. In addition, the land cover types significantly affect the accuracy of SM retrieval, and the incoherent scattering in densely vegetated areas (tropical forests) usually leads to more errors.

An Illustration of FY-3E GNOS-R for Global Soil Moisture Monitoring.

An effective soil moisture retrieval method for FY-3E (Fengyun-3E) GNOS-R (GNSS occultation sounder II-reflectometry) is developed in this paper. Here, the LAGRS model, which is totally oriented for GNOS-R, is employed to estimate vegetation and surface roughness effects on surface reflectivity. Since the LAGRS (land surface GNSS reflection simulator) model is a space-borne GNSS-R (GNSS reflectometry) simulator based on the microwave radiative transfer equation model, the method presented in this paper takes more consideration on the physical scattering properties for retrieval. Ancillary information from SMAP (soil moisture active passive) such as the vegetation water content and the roughness coefficient are investigated for the final algorithm's development. At first, the SR (surface reflectivity) data calculated from GNOS-R is calculated and then calibrated, and then the vegetation roughness factor is achieved and used to eliminate the effects on both factors. After receiving the Fresnel reflectivity, the corresponding soil moisture estimated from this method is retrieved. The results demonstrate good consistency between soil moisture derived from GNOS-R data and SMAP soil moisture, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9599 and a root mean square error of 0.0483 cm3/cm3. This method succeeds in providing soil moisture on a global scale and is based on the previously developed physical LAGRS model. In this way, the great potential of GNOS-R for soil moisture estimation is presented.
